RESUMO

Many adults face the difficulties of a parent living with dementia. Although not always caregiving for a parent living with dementia, they care about and are concerned for the vulnerability of their parent. This concern is invaluable but often an experience with a far-reaching impact. Qualitative research on filial concerns and experiences of caregiving has resulted in a vast body of knowledge about the experience of family carers. Far less research, however, has examined the moral concern of children. The aim of this study is to gain insight into the normative aspects of their concern. An international collection of 24 books written by adult children about their involvement with an ageing parent was analysed using the Dialogical Narrative Analysis method. Our study shows that the stories deal with children's moral questions about independence, identity, and suffering. These questions can be related to social imaginaries of individualism and progress. The two social imaginaries may have both positive and negative impacts on children's ability to cope with their concern for a parent living with dementia. The moral questions that arise from children's concern seem to originate from both the appeal of the vulnerable parent and from the social imaginaries. These moral sources may compete, resulting in moral friction. Children with a parent living with dementia deliberate upon the personal and societal held beliefs and need moral space to embody their concern.

This fact contrasts with the traditional association of these diseases with villains. This manuscript has the objective of detecting the mental health problems that villains and antiheroes have in the cinema to find out if they receive the same treatment and if there are stigmatized diseases linked to each other. From the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the results, patterns, trends and contrasts have been identified between the narratives of mental health between villains and antiheroes. The findings show that post-traumatic stress disorder is the most frequent in antiheroes, while in villains it is narcissistic personality disorder, which shows the existing stigmas in the cinematographic imaginary.(AU)

RESUMO

In this work, a review of the different perceptions of the body that different societies have had throughout history is carried out. It will be seen how, in some moments, positive meanings predominated in the social representation of the body, while at other times the body was perceived from a negative point of view. For the realization of this article qualitative research was carried out based on the review of documents of the history of thought and social theory on the construction of social representations of the body. For this, the theoretical framework of systemic constructivism has been used -in particular, the theory of social imaginaries of Juan Luis Pintos- and the notion of epistemological rupture of Gaston Bachelard. Special attention is also paid to the gender perspective when carrying out the study. It can be concluded that the social representations of the body have been affected by a process of secularization and medicalization, affecting in different ways the perception of the female body, than that of the male. Building throughout the time a representation of the body as something changing and that assumes an identity role for people.(AU)

The arts and creative industries are among those most affected by government measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. This article discusses a qualitative survey study, open between August and October 2020, with creative arts workers living in Victoria, Australia. The study explored experiences of disruptions to work and broader impacts on daily lives during the pandemic. In this article, we examine how participants discuss their work and circulate pre-existing and create new intensified social imaginaries of a devalued and ignored arts sector in Australia. Our analysis points to how people understand their lives, work and communities amidst a global pandemic in relation to and entangled with particular social imaginaries of the creative arts.

This article briefly introduces a historicization of drug use, from the rituals of Antiquity to hypermodernity, a time characterized by hyper-individualism and the fall of ideals, where drug use appears related to an individual experience and alienation. Faced with the exponential increase in drug use in recent decades, we wonder about the characteristics of substance consumption and what are the social imaginaries about this problem, that is, how society understands this use. One of the privileged ways to access these social imaginaries is through cultural products such as literature, cinema or series. Considering that series are gradually replacing television as privileged forms of consumption by thousands of daily viewers through online platforms, we are interested in studying the representation of drug use that is made in current series. The analysis panorama includes the representation of “hard” drugs in the characterization of anti-heroic characters and in young characters from narratives of the coming-of-age genre, as well as in iconic series that showed the world of drugs such as The Wire. Also included is the analysis of problematic alcohol consumption in university professors and addiction to other drugs such as opioids. This complex kaleidoscope allows us to understand the coordinates of current consumption, which do not always imply an addiction, but which in all cases imply different degrees of suffering. (AU)

This study’s purpose is to examine how drugs are represented in fiction and how they reflect the social imaginaries and the success and fall of characters and their time. Results and discussion: This analysis provides an interesting discussion on the representation of different types of drugs in the series. While opium is treated as part of the anti-heroic construction of the main character, cocaine serves as an activator for the violence and brutality of one of the secondary characters. (AU)

Introduction: The harmful use of alcohol has negative effects both for the drinker and for society in general. Educational institutions carry out preventive and harm reduction actions that are oriented towards students and mainly in charge of teachers. However, very few investigations address the consumption habits of these professionals and the consequences it has on their role. In this paper we aim to analyze the social imaginaries that circulate in two contemporary series regarding the problematic consumption of alcohol in teachers. Methodology: We carried out a qualitative content analysis of the series Merlí Sapere Aude (Spain, 2019-2021) and The Chair (United States, 2021) in order to explore, from a relational perspective, the different factors that affect the consumption of alcohol of two characters with this problem. Results: The results reflect the representation of various social and individual factors in the consumption of these characters, focusing especially on their socio-family circumstances. The educational institutions in these series respond to their teachers’ problematic use of alcohol by sanctioning them and removing them from their posts.Discussion and conclusions: The imaginaries represented in these series reinforce beliefs that deny that problematic alcohol consumption is a health problem and place the responsibility for consumption solely on the individual. This highlights the need to encourage educational institutions to also consider the teaching population as care recipients of actions to reduce harm and prevent problematic consumption. (AU)

RESUMO

This article aims to reconstruct the social imaginaries of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Chile. We seek to understand how families interpret their experience confronting the pandemic by identifying four main aspects: (a) the COVID-19 pandemic, (b) working and learning, (c) health and (d) family life. Following Habermas' distinction between lifeworld and social systems, we consider these issues as constituting the social imaginary of lifeworld, different but related to the imaginaries of social systems. The qualitative empirical data was gathered through a sample of 38 families interviewed online between September 2020 and January 2021 in four Chilean cities: Iquique, Valparaíso, Santiago and Concepción. Other complementary sources of information are multimodal ethnography (digital diaries), press articles and state reports.

RESUMO

This study conducted in-depth interviews with 20 students from a university in Wuhan so as to obtain data regarding their collective memory at the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak and their social imaginaries in the longitudinal dimension of time. Compared with those in other regions, interviewees from Wuhan show more fear and dissatisfaction and think that others find it difficult to empathize with their first-hand experiences. Interviewees from Wuhan are more dependent on the media. However, media use can cause problems related to redundant information and emotional impact. While one is confined to home, he/she is forced to participate in communication with family members and the topic of the body is discussed again from a new angle. Trauma leads to self-reconciliation, as facilitated by the re-examination of and reflection on one' nomination of and reflection on n family members and the months in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. However, having received a collectivist education since childhood and having been guided by the discourse system created by the state media, they have since been able to shape their sense of identity and strengthen their sense of national honor.

In this article, I argue that the social imaginaries that inform biomedical regulation circulate not only in technical spheres populated by experts but that they are equally articulated (and vehemently contested) in national public spheres in more popular forms of communication. I examine the relation between a national healthcare imaginary and the regulation of therapeutics through a public controversy about access to an innovative therapeutic indicated for spinal muscular atrophy. The establishment of the Danish Medicines Council, a new health technology assessment institution, and its decision to restrict access to an innovative therapeutic sparked controversy in 2017 involving political proponents, adversaries, and patients, among others. In a variety of ways, they rhetorically mobilized or contested the Danish universalist welfare imaginary which contains promises and prospects of solidarity, security, and absence of market forces in universal healthcare, including access to therapeutics. I use a combination of media content analysis and rhetorical close reading methods to analyze how the imaginary was drawn upon in arguments for and against the new regulatory institution.

I offer a philosophical examination and feminist queering of the social imaginaries of the dead - with specific reference to recent public disclosures about death in Ireland's Mother and Baby Homes - by looking at the issue of spectrality through the work of Jacques Derrida and others. What does it mean to respond to the dead, who, though temporarily forgotten, return to haunt us not as remembered human beings but as remnants or remainders? The normative distinctions between past and present; past, present and future; between living and non-living; absence and presence; and self and other are all made indistinct when displaced by a non-linear temporality. What differential is in play with respect to those who are grievable (in Judith Butler's terms) and the others who constitute what Giorgio Agamben calls bare life? The strategy of memorialising the re/discovered dead seems inadequate, and I outline an alternative hauntological ethics, as suggested by Derrida, and ask if there are queer social imaginaries that allow us to live well with the dead not because we give respect, but because death itself has been rethought. I close with some speculations arising from Deleuzian vitalism and Rosi Braidotti's optimistic claim that 'death frees us into life'.

Abstract We analyze the social imaginaries of the subjective well-being in people who identify as Mapuche in Greater Concepción, Chile. Subjective well-being gives importance to those factors that the subject considers to be a positive contribution to their personal, family or community life, and that generate perceptions of satisfaction and happiness. This also constitutes part of what is perceived as a good life for native people. The work considered a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that the social imaginaries of subjective well-being are diverse and varied, depending on the levels at which the identity is lived: individual, collective or structural. Furthermore, the results indicate that the social imaginaries of the subjective welfare are built around the resignification of individual and collective identity, as part of a process of relationship between subjects, environment and/or nature, in which they converge perceptions, representations, values and emotions associated not only to happiness, security and respect, but also to transcendence as a people carrying a differentiated Mapuche identity.
