RESUMO

Purpose: It has been acknowledged that accurate movement self-perception is a crucial prerequisite for reaching high levels of movement expertise in sports. The influence of distinct educational environments (specialization vs. diversification) on movement self-perception has thus far, however, mainly been tested in short-term investigations. Method: Therefore, a longitudinal study spanning two-and-a-half years was conducted with sports students from two conceptually different sports study programs. A total of 72 sports students from a convergent-oriented program (COSP, n = 38) and a diversification-oriented study program (DOSP, n = 34) participated in the standardized BAST® movement analysis at the beginning and end of their studies. Results: While, at the end of their sports studies, COSP showed no significant changes in movement self-perception, DOSP students' movement self-perception increased significantly in five out of eight movement tasks of the BAST®. DOSP students, furthermore, developed a strong relationship between movement self-perception and movement performance at the end of their sports studies. Conclusion: Sports students benefit from engaging in a broad variety of different sports, allowing them to develop an accurate movement self-perception in relation to their movement performance. The influences of divergent learning experiences and diversification on movement self-perception, as well as, practical implications for the development of process-oriented learning environments that promote students' movement performance by refining movement habits or adapting new movement patterns, were discussed.

RESUMO

A relatively broad consolidated consensus has emerged among experts regarding the competencies that should be fostered through an education for sustainable development at the higher education level. However, there is little empirical support to aid in answering the question of which competencies should be promoted from the perspective of students and graduates. This was the main purpose for analyzing the corresponding results of the evaluation of the study programs in sustainable development at the University of Bern. In a standardized survey, students (N = 124), graduates (N = 121), and the supervisors of internships (N = 37) were asked, among other questions, how important they consider the fostering of the respective 13 competencies during their studies and for their professional activities. Overall, the results confirm the view of experts: the study programs should be designed for a comprehensive empowerment with respect of responsible and self-motivated participation in meeting the challenges of sustainable development. Even the students are of the opinion that competency-oriented education is important and that not only the acquisition, respectively the imparting of knowledge is relevant. Regarding the estimation of the promotion of competencies in the study program, the three groups agree that the competencies "Interconnected, foresighted, and thinking approaches in system-dynamic contexts" and "Recognizing on one's own perspective on a situation and problem, empathizing with other perspectives, and taking these into account when solving problems" are the most important. For the professional field, the competency "Communicating in a comprehensive and target group-oriented manner" is rated most important by all three groups. However, it must be noted that there are also differences between the varying perspectives of the students, graduates, and internship supervisors. The results indicate opportunities for improvement that can also be considered as recommendations in the further development of inter- and transdisciplinary sustainability-oriented study programs. Furthermore, lecturers should, especially regarding a multidisciplinary team, coordinate and communize the development of competencies across the different educational elements. Students should be well informed regarding how the various educational elements, i.e., teaching/learning arrangements and assessments, are intended to contribute to the overall development of competency. Finally, in order to ensure that lecturers align respective learning outcomes, as well as teaching/learning arrangements and assessments in their educational elements, there will need to be a greater focus on competency development across a program of study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although person-centered care (PCC) ensures high-quality care for patients, studies have shown that it is unevenly applied in clinical practice. The extent to which future health care providers are currently offered education in PCC at their universities is unclear. We aimed to clarify the PCC content offered to students as a basis for their understanding by exploring the PCC content of Swedish national study programs in medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy. METHODS: Using a qualitative document analysis design, we sampled the steering documents from all higher education institutions (n = 48) with accreditation in medicine (n = 7), nursing (n = 25), occupational therapy (n = 8), or physiotherapy (n = 8) at a single time point. All national study programs (n = 4), local program syllabuses (n = 48), and local course syllabuses (n = 799) were reviewed using a 10-item protocol. RESULTS: We found no content related to PCC in the steering documents at the national level. At the local level, however, signs of PCC were identified in local program syllabuses and local course syllabuses. Seven of the 48 local program syllabuses (15%) included PCC in their intended learning outcomes. Eight of the 799 local course syllabuses (1%) contained course titles that included the phrase 'person-centered care,' and another 101 listed 142 intended learning outcomes referring to PCC. A total of 21 terms connected to PCC were found, and the term 'person-centered care' was most commonly used in the nursing programs and least commonly in the medical programs. CONCLUSIONS: There is a broad range in how the national study programs in Sweden have incorporated PCC. The implementation has been driven by a bottom-up strategy. A deliberate and standardized strategy is needed to ensure full implementation of PCC into clinical curricula in higher education.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Overseas study trips can enhance healthcare students' intercultural communication competence. An opportunity to immerse in the new culture enables them to develop their ability to offer services to people from different countries. However, the role that open-mindedness (i.e., a personality trait) can play in this process has not been explored. METHODS: The present study adopted a mixed-method design to identify how open-mindedness trait affected this overseas learning process. Thirty-two undergraduate healthcare students in Australia took part in the study. Questionnaires, which measured socio-demographic information, intercultural communication competence and open-mindedness trait were administered to the participants before and after their overseas trip. Half of the participants (n = 16) were interviewed after the overseas trip. RESULTS: The correlational analysis showed that the open-mindedness trait was correlated with cultural skills, a component of intercultural communication competence, but not significant with the other three components. Three themes emerging from the qualitative data indicated that the open-mindedness trait affected students' cultural exposure. This trait enabled participants to be actively involved in the immersion in the local culture. They were willing to learn from peer fellows, and keen to embrace novel challenges. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that open-mindedness trait is vital for increasing cultural immersion, and hence promote intercultural communication skills.

RESUMO

Veterinary medical students, similar to elite collegiate athletes, are developing strategies for learning new skills and for self-care to take their performance to the next level. As veterinary students learn to successfully navigate an information-dense, high-volume curriculum, many sacrifice wellness, leadership opportunities, extracurricular activities, and social interactions. Strategies from athletes' physical training were used to design a self-study program for first-year veterinary medical students. Major considerations in program design were the characteristics of the human being, learning goals, and contextual constraints. The study program included a warm-up, study sessions, and a cooldown. The program was offered to first-year veterinary medical students at Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Thirty-two students requested study programs and 21 completed surveys at the semester end. Results were analyzed quantitatively and by using an adapted conventional content analysis approach. Responses were organized into three main domains: reason for participation, program utility, and program satisfaction. Students shared that the most helpful aspects of the program were assisting with organization and time management, providing accountability, and reducing overwhelm by enhancing well-being and performance; they reported that these learned skills would support their well-being as future professionals. This article describes the experiences of one group of veterinary students at one college using these programs. The long-term goal is to develop a model program for all veterinary students to manage curricular demands while maintaining well-being.

RESUMO

There is a high demand for a veterinary education in animal welfare (AW) with different approaches from the academic, society and trade points of view. Latin American (LA) countries members of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) are under the urge and should be obligated to teach AW. The aims of this article are to analyze the current drives of change on the importance of teaching animal welfare in LA, the competences recommended from international education organizations for the region, and to provide the contents on the curriculum in AW that a future veterinarian should achieve in the LA scenario, in other words to examine why teaching AW, what should be taught and how. Despite significant advances in introducing AW into veterinary training programs, much remains to be done regarding the future of this field in teaching veterinary science in Spain and LA countries, and in including this science as an independent course in programs at distinct levels to integrate the scientific, ethical and legal aspects of AW. This paper presents a proposal that was constructed with a view towards integrating diverse curricular approaches based on criteria, contents and concepts provided by the researchers and professors who collaborated in the book entitled: Bienestar Animal: Una Visión Global en Iberoamerica [Animal Welfare: A Global Vision in Ibero-America]. To ensure veterinary students will be better equipped to graduate with OIE day 1 competencies in AW, teaching approaches are needed that support project-based learning and gamification, critical thinking, reflection and collaborative learning.

RESUMO

Medical science is constantly evolving. Teaching and training must keep pace with these innovations and react in a flexible fashion to new requirements. Model medical education programs, which are governed by the provisions of Sect. 41 of the Regulations for the Licensing of Medical Practitioners (ÄAppO), permit the piloting of innovative teaching programs, which support the continuous development of medical training through incorporation into the standard curricula. This paper reports on the model study programs at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (iMED) and Charité - University Medicine Berlin (MSM). It describes the reform objectives, the curricula and selected projects accompanying both models and concludes by exploring the significance of various training concepts for the development of medical education.

The current study program of the subject Pediatrics in the medical studies, which has been in effect since April 2010 in Cuba, has endeavoured to solve the differences between the two previous programs. The objective of this article was to make a critical analysis of the topic newborn that is included in the study program. Each of the objectives of this topic, its system of contents, the teaching methods and the time distribution were analyzed; at the same time, recommendations were made regarding those aspects that might be improved. The main difficulty of the present program is that the correspondence between the contents of the topics and the teaching methods has not been specified. As to the topic newborn, this difficulty implies teaching inter-unit variations in the way of teaching the concepts and even in the contents as well. It was recommended to include a calendar plan covering the distribution of the teaching methods according to the various contents

BACKGROUND: Research coaching program focuses on the development of abilities and scientific reasoning. For health professionals, it may be useful to increase both the number and quality of projects and manuscripts. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the initial results and implementation methodology of the Research and Innovation Coaching Program of the Research on Research group of Duke University in the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. METHODS: The program works on two bases: training and coaching. Training is done online and addresses contents on research ideas, literature search, scientific writing and statistics. After training, coaching favors the establishment of a collaboration between researchers and centers by means of a network of contacts. The present study describes the implementation and initial results in reference to the years 2011-2012. RESULTS: In 2011, 24 centers received training, which consisted of online meetings, study and practice of the contents addressed. In January 2012, a new format was implemented with the objective of reaching more researchers. In six months, 52 researchers were allocated. In all, 20 manuscripts were published and 49 more were written and await submission and/or publication. Additionally, five research funding proposals have been elaborated. CONCLUSION: The number of manuscripts and funding proposals achieved the objectives initially proposed. However, the main results of this type of initiative should be measured in the long term, because the consolidation of the national production of high-quality research is a virtuous cycle that feeds itself back and expands over time.
