Aim: The aims of this study were to: (i) determine antibiotic susceptibility of clinical Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates, (ii) investigate the presence of different classes of integrons and sul genes responsible for sulphonamide resistance, (iii) assess the molecular epidemiology of the isolates by determining their clonal relatedness, and (iv) investigate the potential sources of infection by collecting environmental samples when necessary. Methods: 99 S. maltophilia isolates from clinical specimens of hospitalized patients were screened by PCR for sul1, sul2, sul3 genes, and integron-associated integrase genes: intI1, intI2, and intI3. PFGE was used to determine the clonal relatedness of the isolates. Results: Susceptibility rates for trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, levofloxacin, and ceftazidime were 90.9%, 91.9%, and 53.5% respectively. All trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-resistant isolates were positive for intI1 and sul1. PFGE analysis revealed that 24 of the isolates were clonally related, clustering in seven different clones. Five of the nine trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole-resistant isolates were clonally related. The first isolate in this clone was from a wound sample of a patient in the infectious diseases clinic, and the other four were isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage samples of patients in the thoracic surgery unit. The patient with the first isolate neither underwent bronchoscopy nor stayed in the thoracic surgery unit. Although clustering was observed in bronchoalveolar lavage samples, no S. maltophilia growth was detected in environmental samples. Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that the sul1 gene carried by class 1 integrons plays an important role in trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance in S. maltophilia isolates. PFGE analysis revealed a high degree of genetic diversity. However, detection of clonally related isolates suggests the acquisition from a common source and/or cross-transmission of this microorganism between the patients.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this investigation was to examine the mechanisms associated with antibiotic resistance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia clinical isolates retrieved from hospitalized patients undergoing open heart surgery in a Heart Center located in Tehran, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This investigation encompassed a cross-sectional study of 60 S. maltophilia isolates, which were procured from diverse clinical specimens. Primary identification of the isolates was conducted through conventional microbiologic methods and subsequently verified by means of PCR primers. The E-test was utilized to establish the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). PCR was then employed to ascertain the antibiotic resistance genes (sul1, sul2, Smqnr and intl1 - intl3). RESULTS: In this study, a total of sixty clinical isolates of S. maltophilia were collected, with the majority of them being obtained from Intensive Care Units (ICU) (n = 54; 90%). The disk diffusion method yielded results indicating that 55% of the isolates were sensitive to minocycline, whereas 30% were intermediate and 15% were found to be resistant. Additionally, the MIC results revealed that the resistant rates of the isolates towards ceftazidime, cotrimoxazole and levofloxacin were 46.7%, 1.7% and 5%, respectively. The PCR amplification of three classes of integrons genes indicated that fifteen (25%) of the isolates carried int1, while no detection for intl2 and intl3 was reported. Furthermore, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (sul1, sul2, and Smqnr) was identified in 15 (25%), 6 (10%), and 28 (46.7%) isolates, respectively. CONCLUSION: The reported increasing rate of antibiotic resistance and mobile genetic elements that could extend the resistance genes to other strains in the hospital, finally it could be an alarming issue for healthcare settings that need special attention to this strain and the epidemiological study on this issue.

RESUMO

Biodiversity research is essential for addressing the global biodiversity crisis, necessitating diverse participation and perspectives. However, the field currently faces a significant inclusivity problem as local expertise from biodiversity-rich but economically disadvantaged regions is often underrepresented. The underrepresentation of local experts is driven by four main challenges: linguistic bias, undervalued contributions, parachute science practices, and capacity constraints. While fragmented solutions exist, a unified multi-stakeholder approach is necessary to address these interconnected and systemic issues. Here, we introduce a holistic framework of collective responsibility, integrating tailored strategies that embrace diversity and dismantle systemic barriers for equitable collaboration. This framework delineates the diverse actors and practices required for promoting inclusivity in biodiversity research, assigning clear responsibilities to researchers, publishers, institutions, and funding bodies. Strategies for researchers include cultivating self-awareness, expanding literature searches, fostering partnerships with local experts, and promoting knowledge exchange. For institutions, we recommend establishing specialized liaison roles, implementing equitable policies, allocating resources for diversity initiatives, and enhancing support for international researchers. Publishers can facilitate multilingual dissemination, remove financial barriers, establish inclusivity standards, and ensure equitable representation in peer review. Funders should remove systemic barriers, strengthen research networks, and prioritize equitable resource allocation. Implementing these stakeholder-specific strategies can help dismantle deep-rooted biases and structural inequities in biodiversity research, catalyzing a shift towards a more inclusive and representative model that amplifies diverse perspectives and maximizes collective knowledge for effective global conservation.


A pesquisa em biodiversidade é essencial para enfrentar a crise global de biodiversidade, exigindo perspectivas diversificadas. No entanto, este campo do conhecimento enfrenta um significativo problema de inclusão, uma vez que os conhecimentos ecológicos produzidos em áreas ricas em biodiversidade, mas economicamente desfavorecidas, são frequentemente sub-representados. Esta sub-representação é impulsionada por quatro desafios principais: viés linguístico, contribuições científicas subvalorizadas, colaborações baseadas em práticas colonialistas (parachute science) e lacunas na capacitação e no acesso a dados. Embora soluções fragmentadas existam, uma abordagem multilateral unificada é necessária para abordar estas questões sistêmicas. Aqui, introduzimos uma abordagem holística de responsabilidade coletiva, integrando estratégias personalizadas que abraçam a diversidade e desmantelam barreiras sistêmicas para uma colaboração equitativa. Esta abordagem delineia os diversos atores e práticas necessárias para promover a inclusão na pesquisa sobre biodiversidade, atribuindo responsabilidades claras a pesquisadores, editoras, instituições e órgãos de fomento. As estratégias para os investigadores incluem o cultivo da autoconsciência, a expansão das pesquisas bibliográficas, o fomento de parcerias com especialistas locais e a promoção do intercâmbio de conhecimentos. Para as instituições, recomendamos o estabelecimento de funções de intermediação especializadas, a implementação de políticas equitativas, a alocação de recursos para iniciativas de diversidade e o reforço do apoio a pesquisadores internacionais. As editoras podem facilitar a divulgação multilíngue, eliminar barreiras financeiras, estabelecer normas de inclusão e assegurar uma representação equitativa na avaliação pelos pares. Os financiadores devem eliminar barreiras sistêmicas, fortalecer redes de pesquisa e dar prioridade à distribuição equitativa de recursos. A implementação dessas estratégias específicas para as partes interessadas pode ajudar a desmantelar vieses profundamente enraizados e desigualdades estruturais na pesquisa de biodiversidade, catalisando uma mudança para um modelo mais inclusivo e representativo que amplifica perspectivas diversas e maximiza o conhecimento coletivo para uma eficaz conservação da biodiversidade global.

Microbial resistance to antibiotics poses a significant threat to both human and animal health, necessitating international efforts to mitigate this issue. This study aimed to assess the resistance profiles of Salmonella sp. isolates and identify the presence of intl1, sul1, and blaTEM resistance genes within antigenically characterized isolates, including Agona, Livingstone, Cerro, Schwarzengrund, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype O:4.5, Anatum, Enteritidis, Johannesburg, Corvallis, and Senftenberg. These isolates underwent susceptibility testing against 14 antibiotics. The highest resistance percentages were noted for sulfamethoxazole (91%), sulfonamides (51%), and ceftiofur (28.9%), while no resistance was observed for ciprofloxacin. Salmonella Johannesburg and Salmonella Corvallis showed resistance to one antibiotic, whereas other serovars were resistant to at least two. Salmonella Schwarzengrund exhibited resistance to 13 antibiotics. The intl1 gene was detected in six out of the ten serovars, and the sul1 gene in three, always co-occurring with intl1. The blaTEM gene was not identified. Our findings highlight the risk posed by the detected multiple resistances and genes to animal, human, and environmental health. The multidrug resistance, especially to third-generation cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones, highlights the need for stringent monitoring of Salmonella in laying hens. The potential of the environment, humans, eggs, and their products to act as vectors for antibiotic resistance represents a significant concern for One Health.

Following the first report of zika virus in March 2015, Brazil experienced its largest sylvatic yellow fever outbreak between 2016 and 2019. This study aimed to investigate the circulation of yellow fever virus (YFV) in non-human primates (NHPs) and mosquitoes collected in urban parks and other metropolitan areas of midwest Brazil between 2017 and 2018. Whole blood samples from 80 NHPs, including 48 black-tailed marmosets (Mico melanurus) and 2332 mosquitoes from six different genera, were collected in the states of Mato Grosso (MT) and Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) and then tested for YFV by RT-qPCR. Additionally, 23 plasma samples of NHPs were tested for neutralizing antibodies for YFV by a plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). No YFV RNA or neutralizing antibodies for YFV were detected in NHPs and mosquitoes from MT and MS. The continuous monitoring of YFV circulation in different species of NHPs and vectors in urban areas is instrumental to quickly assess potentially unknown maintenance cycles of yellow fever at the human-animal interface in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic activities significantly contribute to the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a substantial threat to humankind. The development of methods that allow robust ARG surveillance is a long-standing challenge. Here, we use city-scale monitoring of ARGs by using two of the most promising cutting-edge technologies, digital PCR (dPCR) and metagenomics. METHODS: ARG hot-spots were sampled from the urban water and wastewater distribution systems. Metagenomics was used to provide a broad view of ARG relative abundance and richness in the prokaryotic and viral fractions. From the city-core ARGs in all samples, the worldwide dispersed sul2 and tetW conferring resistance to sulfonamide and tetracycline, respectively, were monitored by dPCR and metagenomics. RESULTS: The largest relative overall ARG abundance and richness were detected in the hospital wastewater and the WWTP inlet (up to ≈6,000 ARGs/Gb metagenome) with a large fraction of unclassified resistant bacteria. The abundance of ARGs in DNA and RNA contigs classified as viruses was notably lower, demonstrating a reduction of up to three orders of magnitude compared to contigs associated to prokaryotes. By metagenomics and dPCR, a similar abundance tendency of sul2 and tetW was obtained, with higher abundances in hospital wastewater and WWTP input (≈125-225 ARGs/Gb metagenome). dPCR absolute abundances were between 6,000 and 18,600 copies per ng of sewage DNA (≈105-7 copies/mL) and 6.8 copies/mL in seawater near the WWTP discharging point. CONCLUSIONS: dPCR was more sensitive and accurate, while metagenomics provided broader coverage of ARG detection. While desirable, a reliable correlation of dPCR absolute abundance units into metagenomic relative abundance units was not obtained here (r2 < 0.4) suggesting methodological factors that introduce variability. Evolutionary pressure does not significantly select the targeted ARGs in natural aquatic environments.

The incidence of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) varies in Latin America, and it is influenced by environmental factors. This study evaluated the distribution of PCM acute/subacute form (AF) cases and their correlation with geoclimatic factors in the Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state. The study included 81 patients diagnosed with the PCM/AF at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul between January 1980 and February 2022. Geographic coordinates, health microregion of patient's residence, compensated average temperature, relative air humidity (RH), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and average global temperature were analyzed. The highest incidence was observed in the Aquidauana (7/100,000 inhabitants), while Campo Grande, the state's capital, had the highest number (n = 34; 42.4%) and density (4.4 cases/km2) of cases. The number of cases increased during extended periods of the El Niño phenomenon. A positive correlation was found between higher RH and PCM/AF cases. Most PCM/AF cases were found in areas with loamy soils and RH ranging from 60.8 to 73.6%. In MS, the health microregions of PCM/AF patients are characterized by deforestation for agricultural and pasture use, coupled with loamy soils and specific climatic phenomena leading to higher soil humidity.

Resumo Fundamento: As doenças cardiovasculares (DCV) têm ônus sanitário e econômico significativos. Na América do Sul (AS), a perda de produtividade relacionada a estas enfermidades ainda não foi bem explorada. Objetivo: Estimar os anos de vida produtiva perdidos (AVPP) e a perda de produtividade relacionados a mortalidade prematura associada as DCV na AS, em 2019. Métodos: Empregou-se dados de mortalidade disponíveis no Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 na estimativa da carga de doença atribuível a DCV. Para os cálculos monetários da perda da produtividade usou-se uma proxy da abordagem de capital humano. Estratificou-se por sexo, nas faixas etárias de trabalho. Resultados: O número total de mortes por DCV na AS no ano de 2019 foi de 754.324 e os AVPP foram 2.040.973. A perda permanente de produtividade total foi de aproximadamente US$ 3,7 bilhões e US$ 7,8 bilhões em paridade do poder de compra, equivalente a 0,11% do produto interno bruto. O custo por morte foi de US$ 22.904, e a razão desse custo por óbito, entre homens e mulheres foi 1,45. A variação dos cenários aponta robustez nas estimativas, mesmo com diferenças importantes entre os países. Conclusões: As DCV impõem um ônus econômico significativo a este bloco de países. A caracterização deste fardo pode amparar os governos na alocação de recursos destinados ao planejamento e execução de políticas e intervenções sanitárias, sejam de promoção, prevenção ou recuperação.


Abstract Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have significant health and economic burdens. In South America, the loss of productivity related to these diseases has not yet been well explored. Objective: Estimate the potentially productive years of life lost (PPYLL) and loss of productivity related to premature mortality associated with CVD in South America, in 2019. Methods: Mortality data available from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Study were used to estimate the burden of disease attributable to CVD. For monetary calculations of productivity loss, a proxy of the human capital approach was used. Data were stratified by sex, in working age groups. Results: The total number of deaths due to CVD in South America in 2019 was 754,324, and the total number of PPYLL was 2,040,973. The total permanent loss of productivity was approximately US$ 3.7 billion and US$ 7.8 billion in purchasing power parity, equivalent to 0.11% of the gross domestic product. The cost per death was US$ 22,904, and the ratio between men and women for the cost per death was 1.45. The variation in scenarios indicates that the estimates are robust, even with important differences between countries. Conclusions: CVD impose a significant economic burden on countries in South America. The characterization of this burden can support governments in the allocation of resources for the planning and execution of health policies and interventions in promotion, prevention, and recovery.

The Americas contain highly biodiverse yet vulnerable ecosystems, with many threatened species inadequately protected. Finer-scale, localized habitat assessments are crucial for effective conservation planning, but continental-scale high-resolution vegetation maps remain limited. This study addresses this gap by identifying critical vegetation types across the Americas using the standardized framework of the International Vegetation Classification (IVC) system at the macrogroup level, representing the finest vegetation classification available across the region, as well as the highest-resolution Area of Habitat (AOH) maps currently available. By combining these high-resolution IVC macrogroup maps with detailed AOH maps, we highlight at-risk vegetation types based on 1) threatened and macrogroup-associated species (species that have at least 50% of their AOH in one macrogroup), 2) current protection levels, and 3) projected threats from land use changes, and 4) develop a conservation value index (CVI) that accounts for all these factors. The results highlighted the remarkable diversity of high conservation value macrogroups across the Americas, emphasizing their significance in regions such as the Andes, montane Mesoamerica, the Caribbean, Brazil's Cerrado, and the Atlantic Forest. Among the highest-scoring macrogroups, the Northern Andean Montane & Upper Montane Humid Forest emerged as critically important, harboring a high number of threatened and macrogroup-associated species. Other macrogroups of immediate conservation concern include the Brazilian Atlantic Montane Humid Forest, Pacific Mesoamerican Seasonal Dry Forest, Caribbean Lowland Humid Forest, and Central Midwest Oak Forest, Woodland and Savanna. However, the study revealed that nearly three-quarters of the over 300 macrogroups in the Americas fall below the global target of 30% protection. Notably, a fifth of all species were macrogroup-associated species, including over 40% of threatened species. Our findings emphasize the need for targeted conservation strategies that consider finer-scale habitat classifications and paired with high-quality species distribution data to guide conservation strategies for biodiversity across the Americas.


Las Américas contienen ecosistemas altamente biodiversos pero vulnerables, con muchas especies amenazadas insuficientemente protegidas. Las evaluaciones de hábitat hechas a escala más detallada son cruciales para una planificación eficaz de la conservación, pero los mapas de vegetación de alta resolución a escala continental siguen siendo limitados. Este estudio aborda esta brecha, identificando tipos de vegetación críticos en las Américas utilizando el marco estandarizado del sistema de Clasificación Internacional de Vegetación (IVC) a nivel de macrogrupo, que representa la clasificación de vegetación más detallada disponible en toda la región, así como los mapas de Área de Hábitat (AOH) de mayor resolución disponibles en la actualidad Al combinar estos mapas de IVC de alta resolución con mapas de AOH, determinamos los tipos de vegetación en riesgo basados ​​en 1) especies amenazadas y asociadas a macrogrupos (especies que tienen al menos el 50% de su AOH en un macrogrupo), 2) niveles de protección de las especies, y 3) amenazas proyectadas por cambios en el uso del suelo , y 4) desarrollar un índice de valor de conservación (CVI) que tenga en cuenta los tres factores anteriores. Sin embargo, el estudio reveló que casi tres cuartas partes de los más de 300 macrogrupos en las Américas se encuentran por debajo del objetivo global del 30% de protección. En particular, una quinta parte de todas las especies estaban asociadas a un único   macrogrupo, incluidas más del 40% de especies amenazadas. Nuestros hallazgos enfatizan la necesidad de estrategias de conservación específicas que consideren clasificaciones de hábitats a escala detallada y se combinen con datos de distribución de especies de alta resolución para guiar las estrategias de conservación de la biodiversidad en las Américas.

Este estudo aborda essa lacuna, identificando tipos críticos de vegetação nas Américas usando o quadro padronizado do sistema de Classificação Internacional de Vegetação (IVC) no nível de macrogrupo, que representa a classificação de vegetação mais detalhada disponível em toda a região, bem como os mapas de Área de Hábitat (AOH) de maior resolução disponíveis atualmente. Ao combinar esses mapas de IVC de alta resolução com mapas de AOH, determinamos os tipos de vegetação em risco com base em 1) espécies ameaçadas e associadas a macrogrupos (espécies que têm pelo menos 50% de sua AOH em um macrogrupo), 2) níveis de proteção das espécies, e 3) ameaças projetadas por mudanças no uso do solo, e 4) desenvolvemos um índice de valor de conservação (CVI) que leva em consideração os três fatores anteriores. Abstract In Brazil, current information about breastfeeding indicators among indigenous living in the urban areas is lacking. This article describes the duration of exclusive breastfeeding and its associations with mother and child characteristics in a cohort of Terena infants. The study enrolled infants born between June 2017 to July 2018 (n = 42) and living in villages of the urban area of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Information was collected in four time-points. Variables on maternal sociodemographics and on maternal and child health characteristics were collected, respectively, during the antenatal and the first-month interviews. Variables on breastfeeding practices and bottle use were collected during the first-, six- and 12-month interviews. Associations were examined using Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson's chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests. The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding duration to the ages of three and six months were, respectively, 50% and 11.9%. Compared to infants never introduced to bottles during the first three months of life, those bottle-fed had lower median duration of exclusive breastfeeding (15 versus 150 days) and lower prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding duration to the age of three months (22.7% versus 80%). Most Terena infants fell short of meeting the international recommended duration of exclusive breastfeeding until six months of age and suggested the negative impact of bottle use in the duration of exclusive breastfeeding.


Resumo No Brasil, não há informações atuais sobre indicadores de aleitamento materno entre indígenas residentes em áreas urbanas. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a duração do aleitamento materno exclusivo e suas associações com características maternas e infantis em uma coorte de lactentes Terena. O estudo incluiu crianças nascidas de junho de 2017 a julho de 2018 (n = 42) e residentes em povoados da zona urbana de Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. As informações foram coletadas em quatro momentos. Variáveis sociodemográficas maternas e características de saúde materno-infantil foram coletadas durante o pré-natal e o primeiro mês de entrevistas, respectivamente. As variáveis sobre práticas de amamentação e uso de mamadeira foram coletadas durante as entrevistas realizadas no primeiro mês, seis meses e 12 meses. As associações foram examinadas pelos testes de Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis, qui-quadrado de Pearson e exato de Fisher. As prevalências de duração do aleitamento materno exclusivo até os três e seis meses de idade foram, respectivamente, de 50% e 11,9%. Em relação aos bebês que nunca foram introduzidos à mamadeira durante os três primeiros meses de vida, aqueles que usaram mamadeira tiveram menor duração média de amamentação exclusiva (15 versus 150 dias) e menor prevalência de duração de amamentação exclusiva até os três meses de idade (22,7% versus 80%). A maioria dos lactentes Terena não atingiu a duração recomendada internacionalmente para o aleitamento materno exclusivo até os seis meses, sugerindo um impacto negativo do uso da mamadeira na duração do aleitamento materno exclusivo.


Resumen En Brasil no existe información actual sobre los indicadores de lactancia materna entre los indígenas que viven en áreas urbanas. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir la duración de la lactancia materna exclusiva y sus asociaciones con las características maternas e infantiles en una cohorte de lactantes Terena. Este estudio incluyó a niños nacidos entre junio de 2017 y julio de 2018 (n = 42) y que vivían en aldeas del área urbana de Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. La información se recopiló en cuatro momentos. Las variables sociodemográficas maternas y las características de salud materno-infantil durante la atención prenatal y el primer mes de entrevistas, respectivamente, se recogieron para este estudio. Las variables sobre prácticas de lactancia materna y alimentación con biberón fueron recolectadas de las entrevistas realizadas en el primer mes, seis meses y 12 meses. Las asociaciones pasaron por las pruebas de Wilcoxon, de Kruskal-Wallis, el chi-cuadrado de Pearson y la prueba exacta de Fisher. La prevalencia de duración de la lactancia materna exclusiva fue del 50% hasta los tres meses de edad y del 11,9% hasta los seis meses. En comparación con los bebés que no utilizaron biberón durante los primeros tres meses de vida, los que usaron biberón tuvieron una duración promedio más corta de lactancia materna exclusiva (15 versus 150 días) y una menor prevalencia de lactancia materna exclusiva hasta los tres meses de edad (22,7% versus 80%). La mayoría de los bebés Terena no alcanzaron la duración recomendada internacionalmente para la lactancia materna exclusiva hasta los seis meses, lo que sugiere un impacto negativo de la alimentación con biberón en la duración de la lactancia materna exclusiva.

Resumen Este texto discute sobre la psicología social latinoamericana -originariamente conectada con tradiciones críticas de acción social (educación popular, ciencias sociales militantes, filosofía de la liberación)- y la recepción en dicho espacio de paradigmas emergentes vinculados al giro decolonial, las epistemologías del Sur y otras tendencias autonomistas y subalternistas para pensar los procesos de transformación social. Se revisa como dichos movimientos estarían desordenando y revitalizando una disciplina que, en su expresión hegemónica, se encontraba adormecida y cooptada por la institucionalización burocrática y la producción teórica neoliberal para leer e intervenir en el campo social. Para ello, se sitúa el desarrollo histórico de la disciplina en el clima teórico de tres momentos relevantes en la configuración del campo social. Se concluye con algunas observaciones sobre las posibilidades que asoman para pensar lo social-comunitario a la luz de estas epistemes emergentes, pero también algunos problemas/limitaciones a tener en consideración.


Resumo Discute-se a psicologia social comunitária latino-americana - originalmente ligada às tradições críticas da ação social no continente (educação popular, ciências sociais militantes, filosofia da libertação) - e sua recepção nesse espaço de paradigmas emergentes vinculados à virada decolonial, às epistemologias do Sul e suas tendências autonomistas e subalternistas para pensar os processos de transformação social. Revisa como esses movimentos estariam desordenando e revitalizando uma disciplina que, em sua expressão hegemônica, foi cooptada pela institucionalização burocrática e pela produção teórica neoliberal para ler e intervir no campo social. Pelo exposto, o desenvolvimento histórico da disciplina situa-se no clima teórico de três momentos relevantes na configuração do campo social. Conclui com algumas observações sobre as possibilidades que surgem para pensar o social-comunidade à luz dessas epistemes emergentes, mas também sobre problemas/limitações a serem considerados.


Abstract We discuss Latin American Community-Social Psychology - originally connected with critical traditions of social action (popular education, militant social sciences, philosophy of liberation) - and its reception of emerging paradigms linked to the decolonial turn, the epistemologies of the South, and its autonomist and subalternist tendencies to think about the processes of social transformation. We review how these movements would disorder and revitalize a discipline that, in its hegemonic expression, laid dormant and co-opted by bureaucratic institutionalization and neoliberal theoretical production to read and intervene in the social field. For this, we place the historical development of the discipline in the theoretical climate of three relevant moments in the configuration of the social field. We conclude with some observations on the possibilities that seem to think about the social-community in light of these emerging epistemes but also some problems/limitations worthy of consideration.


Resumé Nous discutons de la psychologie sociale communautaire latino-américaine - à l'origine liée aux traditions critiques de l'action sociale (éducation populaire, sciences sociales militantes, philosophie de la libération) - et sa réception dans ledit espace de paradigmes émergents liés au tournant décolonial, aux épistémologies du Sud et ses tendances autonomistes et subalternistes à penser les processus de transformation sociale. Il examine comment ces mouvements perturberaient et revitaliseraient une discipline qui, dans son expression hégémonique, était cooptée par l'institutionnalisation bureaucratique et la production théorique néolibérale pour lire et intervenir dans le champ social. Considérant le précédent, le développement historique de la discipline se situe dans le climat théorique de trois moments pertinents dans la configuration du champ social. Nous concluons par quelques observations sur les possibilités qui apparaissent de penser la social-communauté à la lumière de ces épistémès émergentes, mais aussi sur quelques problèmes/limites à prendre en considération.

ABSTRACT Objective. To investigate the burden of tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer due to tobacco exposure in the last 30 years in 12 South American countries. Methods. We used the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 exposure-response function to analyze the total tobacco, smoking, and secondhand smoke exposure-related TBL cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), for 12 South American countries, between 1990 and 2019. Metrics were described as absolute numbers or rates per 100 000 individuals. The relative change in burden was assessed by comparing the 1990-1994 to 2015-2019 periods. Results. In 2019, the all-ages number of TBL cancer deaths and DALYs associated with tobacco exposure in South America was 29 348 and 658 204 in males and 14 106 and 318 277 in females, respectively. Age-adjusted death and DALYs rates for the region in 2019 were 182.8 and 4035 in males and 50.8 and 1162 in females, respectively. In males, 10/12 countries observed relative declines in TBL death rates attributed to tobacco exposure while only 4 countries reduced their mortality in females. Conclusion. While significant efforts on tobacco control are under place in South America, substantial burden of TBL cancer persists in the region with significant sex-specific disparities. Increased country-specific primary data on TBL cancer and tobacco exposure is needed to optimize healthcare strategies and improve comprehension of regional trends.


RESUMEN Objetivo. Investigar la carga del cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón por exposición al tabaco en los últimos 30 años en 12 países de Sudamérica. Métodos. Se utilizó la función de relación entre exposición y respuesta de la carga mundial de morbilidad del 2019 para analizar las muertes por cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón asociadas a la exposición total al tabaco, al tabaquismo activo y al tabaquismo pasivo, así como los años de vida ajustados en función de la discapacidad (AVAD), en 12 países de Sudamérica, entre 1990 y el 2019. Los resultados se presentaron en forma de número absoluto o de tasa por 100 000 personas. Se evaluó el cambio relativo de la carga mediante la comparación de los períodos 1990-1994 y 2015-2019. Resultados. En el 2019, el número de muertes por cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón y los AVAD asociados a la exposición al tabaco para todas las edades en Sudamérica fueron de 29 348 y 658 204 en los hombres y de 14 106 y 318 277 en las mujeres, respectivamente. La tasa de mortalidad y los AVAD ajustados por la edad correspondientes al 2019 en la región fueron de 182,8 y 4035 en los hombres y de 50,8 y 1162 en las mujeres, respectivamente. En el caso de los hombres, en 10 de los 12 países se observaron disminuciones relativas de la tasa de mortalidad por cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón atribuido a la exposición al tabaco, mientras que en el caso de las mujeres solo en 4 países hubo una reducción de la mortalidad. Conclusión. Aunque en Sudamérica se están llevando a cabo iniciativas importantes para el control del tabaco, en esta región persiste una carga considerable de cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón, con diferencias significativas en función del sexo. Es preciso contar con más datos primarios específicos de cada país sobre el cáncer de tráquea, bronquios y pulmón, así como sobre la exposición al tabaco, para optimizar las estrategias de atención de salud y mejorar la comprensión de las tendencias regionales.


RESUMO Objetivo. Investigar a carga de câncer de traqueia, brônquios e pulmão (TBP) decorrente da exposição ao tabaco nos últimos 30 anos em 12 países da América do Sul. Métodos. A função de exposição-resposta do estudo Carga Global de Doença (GBD, na sigla em inglês) 2019 foi usada para analisar o número de mortes e de anos de vida ajustados por incapacidade (AVAI) por câncer de TBP relacionado à exposição total ao tabaco e ao tabagismo e ao fumo passivo em 12 países da América do Sul entre 1990 e 2019. Os índices foram descritos em números absolutos ou taxas por 100 mil pessoas. A variação relativa da carga foi avaliada comparando-se os períodos de 1990 a 1994 e de 2015 a 2019. Resultados. Em 2019, os números de mortes e de AVAI por câncer de TBP associado à exposição ao tabaco na América do Sul, em todas as idades, foram, respectivamente, 29.348 e 658.204 em homens e 14.106 e 318.277 em mulheres. As taxas de mortalidade e os AVAI ajustados por idade na região foram, respectivamente, 182,8 e 4.035 em homens e 50,8 e 1.162 em mulheres em 2019. Em homens, 10 dos 12 países registraram uma diminuição relativa das taxas de mortalidade por câncer de TBP atribuído à exposição ao tabaco, mas somente 4 países obtiveram uma redução da mortalidade em mulheres. Conclusão. Apesar dos consideráveis esforços atuais para o controle do tabaco na América do Sul, ainda há uma expressiva carga de câncer de TBP na região, com disparidades significativas entre os sexos. É necessário dispor de mais dados primários sobre câncer de TBP e exposição ao tabaco específicos para cada país para aprimorar as estratégias de atenção à saúde e melhorar a compreensão das tendências regionais.

Marine bacteria are possible reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) originating not only from clinical and terrestrial hot spots but also from the marine environment. We report here for the first time a higher rate of the sulfonamide-resistance gene sul4 in marine bacterial isolates compared with other sul genes. Among four sulfonamide-resistance genes (sul1, sul2, sul3, and sul4), sul4 was most abundant (45%) in 74 sulfonamide-resistant marine isolates by PCR screening. The order of abundance was sul4 (33 isolates) >sul2 (6 isolates) >sul3 (5 isolates) >sul1 (1 isolate). Whole-genome sequencing of 23 isolates of sul4-expressing α- and γ-proteobacteria and bacilli revealed that sul4 was not accompanied by known mobile genetic elements. This suggests that sul4 in these marine isolates is clonally transferred and not horizontally transferable. Folate metabolism genes formed a cluster with sul4, suggesting that the cluster area plays a role in folate metabolism, at which sul4 functions as a dihydropteroate synthase. Thus, sul4 might be expressed in marine species and function in folate synthesis, but it is not a transferable ARG.

OBJECTIVE: To review the pharmacology, efficacy, and safety of intravenous sulbactam-durlobactam (SUL-DUR) in the treatment of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) infections. DATA SOURCES: PubMed databases and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched using the following terms: Sulbactam Durlobactam, ETX2514, Xacduro, Sulbactam-ETX2514, ETX2514SUL. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: Articles published in English between January 1985 and September 13, 2023, related to pharmacology, safety, efficacy, and clinical trials were reviewed. DATA SYNTHESIS: A phase II trial compared SUL-DUR with placebo with imipenem and cilastatin in both groups. Overall treatment success in the microbiological intention-to-treat analysis was reported in 76.6% of patients in the SUL-DUR group compared with 81% patients in the placebo group. A phase III trial compared SUL-DUR with colistin in adults with confirmed CRAB infections. Patients received either SUL-DUR or colistin and background therapy with imipenem-cilastatin. SUL-DUR was noninferior to colistin for 28-day all-cause mortality (19% vs 32.3%, treatment difference -13.2%; 95% CI [-30.0 to 3.5]). RELEVANCE TO PATIENT CARE AND CLINICAL PRACTICE IN COMPARISON TO EXISTING DRUGS: Clinicians have limited options to treat CRAB infections. SUL-DUR has demonstrated efficacy against CRAB in patients with pneumonia and may be considered a viable treatment option. Nonetheless, potential impact of concomitant imipenem-cilastatin as background therapy on clinical trial findings is unclear. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of SUL-DUR alone or in combination with other active antimicrobials for the treatment of CRAB infections. CONCLUSIONS: SUL-DUR has shown to be predominantly noninferior to alternative antibiotics in the treatment of pneumonias caused by CRAB, making it a viable treatment option. Further postmarketing data is needed to ascertain its role in other infections.

The Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) Basin is a crucial drainage basin in Southeast Brazil, being the most industrialized and densely populated region in the country. Over the last three decades, the basin has been the subject of numerous studies due to its long history of mercury (Hg) contamination. This makes the PSR Basin an excellent model to evaluate Hg cycling, which is a priority for signatory countries of the Minamata Convention, which includes Brazil. This review compiled data on Hg from five environmental compartments (animals, plants, sediment, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and water), three different sectors (upper, middle, and lower) and five different ecosystems (reservoir, mangrove, fluvial, estuarine, and coastal) from 60 published studies, aiming to understand the Hg cycling through meta-analyses. The highest concentrations of Hg were observed in the upper and middle sectors of the basin, which are areas with high industrialization and urbanization levels. Among the evaluated ecosystems, hydropower reservoirs showed the highest medians and were also frequent in the upper and middle portions of the PSR basin. Over the years, all environmental compartments showed a decline in Hg concentrations due to the implementation of federal and state environmental policies. The main source of Hg for the basin was Hg-rich soils from past activities (such as artisanal small-scale gold mining and the use of organomercurial fungicides in sugarcane plantations). These results can assist decision-makers in the management of the basin's ecosystems and can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Minamata Convention in the region.

Sulfonamides (SAs) are the first broad-spectrum synthetic antimicrobial agents used in human health and veterinary medicine. The majority of SAs entering human body is discharged into aquatic environment in the form of parent material or metabolites. The residues of SAs and their metabolites in the aquatic environment and the development of drug resistance can be serious threats to ecosystems and human health. We summarized recent advances in the research of SAs. The main metabolite types of SAs and the distribution characteristics of metabolites in different aquatic environments were introduced. The ecotoxicology of SAs metabolites, especially the distribution and hazards of sulfonamide resistance genes (sul-ARGs), were discussed with emphasis. Finally, the future research works were proposed. This paper could provide basic information for further research on SAs.

The spread of bacteria with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic ecosystems is of growing concern as this can pose a risk of transmission to humans and animals. While the impact of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent on ARG abundance in surface waters has been studied extensively, less is known about the fate of ARGs in biofilms. The proximity and dense growth of microorganisms in combination with the accumulation of higher antibiotic concentrations in biofilms might render biofilms a reservoir for ARGs. Seasonal parameters such as water temperature, precipitation, and antibiotic concentrations should be considered as well, as they may further influence the fate of ARGs in aquatic ecosystems. Here we investigated the effect of WWTP effluent on the abundance of the sulfonamide resistance genes sul1 and sul2, and the integrase gene intI1 in biofilm and surface water compartments of a river in Germany with a gradient of anthropogenic impact using quantitative PCR. Furthermore, we analyzed the bacterial community structure in both compartments via 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, following the river downstream. Additionally, conventional water parameters and sulfonamide concentrations were measured, and seasonal aspects were considered by comparing the fate of ARGs and bacterial community diversity in the surface water compartment between the summer and winter season. Our results show that biofilm compartments near the WWTP had a higher relative abundance of ARGs (up to 4.7%) than surface waters (<2.8%). Sulfonamide resistance genes were more persistent further downstream (>10 km) of the WWTP in the hot and dry summer season than in winter. This finding is likely a consequence of the higher proportion of wastewater and thus wastewater-derived microorganisms in the river during summer periods. We observed distinct bacterial communities and ARG abundance between the biofilm and surface water compartment, but even greater variations when considering seasonal and spatiotemporal parameters. This underscores the need to consider seasonal aspects when studying the fate of ARGs in aquatic ecosystems.
