RESUMO

It is known that the quantity, makeup, and distribution of bodily fluids have a significant impact on the cognitive health, physiological health, and cell activity of human beings. This narrative could be influenced by the level of knowledge about hydration, dehydration, and the practice of Adequate Water Intake (AWI) of an individual based on the recommended daily Total Water Intake (TWI) by either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In this study, we have developed and validated a scale to adequately measure knowledge of the recommended daily Total Water Intake (TWI) practices among foreign students at Óbuda University, Hungary. Hence, we implemented an 11-item scale to measure the Knowledge of Hydration (KH-11) and evaluate its psychometric properties among students. This study is an online cross-sectional study assessing water intake knowledge with the use of the KH-11 tool among 323 students with ages ranging from 18 to 35 years, who have enrolled for at least two semesters at the University. The statistical analysis performed was reliability (using Cronbach alpha ≥ 70%) and factor analysis. Knowledge levels were categorized as poor (<50%), intermediate (50-70%), or adequate (71-100%). The intraclass correlation, chi-square, and rotated component matrix were also estimated and reported. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Cronbach's alpha analysis revealed that the KH-11 had an overall good reliability with a value of 0.80, where the survey items had an acceptable level of consistency ranging from 0.75 to 0.81 and demonstrated sufficient independence from each other as Pearson's R within factors was positive and ranged from 0.02 to 0.74. In evaluating the participants' knowledge of hydration, the total possible score for the scale is 72, while the mean score for the KH-11 was 55.2 ± 11.61 SD, and the factor analysis model yielded an acceptable fit (χ2 = 3259.4, p = 0.000). We recorded a high-level positive concordance of 0.770 with an average intraclass correlation of 0.80 at a 95% CI, where p-value = 0.000. Our findings show that the majority (66.3%) of the students have a good knowledge of hydration. However, the skewed distribution of the knowledge scores suggests that some may have lower levels of knowledge, which may warrant further study to improve knowledge in those students.

RESUMO

Chicken eggs can be a significant source of human PFAS exposure. A survey of PFAS in commercial eggs from larger farms across Denmark showed the absence or low contents of PFAS in free-range and barn eggs. However, organic eggs from eight farms collected in September 2022 had a similar profile of nine PFASs with a predominance of odd over even carbon length PFCAs. Farm 11-13 e.g. had egg yolk ng/g concentrations of PFOA 0.07 ± 0.02; PFNA 0.37 ± 0.04; PFDA 0.13 ± 0.00; PFUnDA 0.22 ± 0.04; PFDoDA 0.06 ± 0.02; PFTrDA 0.15 ± 0.04; PFTeDA 0.02 ± 0.02; PFHxS 0.10 ± 0.04; PFOS 2.62 ± 0.11. Normalised to PFOS, the relative sum of other PFAS showed no difference between the eight organic egg samples, but significant differences between mean individual PFASs (p = 1.4E-25), reflecting a similar profile. The PFAS found in two fishmeal samples with the same origin as the fishmeal used for the organic feed production, could account for the contents in the eggs via estimated transfer from the feed. Furthermore, the estimated transfer from concentration in feed to concentration in egg increased with the carbon length of the PFCA. Exposure (95th percentile) of ∑4PFAS (PFOA, PFNA, PFHxS, PFOS) solely from consumption of 311 g âˆ¼ 5-6 organic eggs/week was for children 4-9 years 10.4 ng/kg bw, i.e. a significant exceedance of the tolerable weekly intake of 4.4 ng/kg bw established by the European Food Safety Authority. Based on the PFAS exposures from organic egg consumption, the organic egg producers decided voluntarily to cease adding fishmeal to the feed. Since the feed-to-egg half-lives are ≤1 week for PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS, the removal of fishmeal as a feed ingredient should eliminate PFAS after 1-2 months. This was demonstrated in analyses of ten organic egg samples collected by the authorities without PFAS in eight and with 0.1 and 0.4 ng/g ∑4PFAS in two samples.

RESUMO

Hydrological modelling is a precondition for many scientific researches such as species distribution models, ecological models, agricultural suitability models, climatological models, hydrological models, flood and flash flood models, landslide models etc. Even the topographic control over many hydrological factors has also been studied. Over time different hydrological models have been developed and extensively used. Recently, these models have been used to prepare different types of conditional factors that are widely used in hazard modelling such as floods, flash floods, landslides etc. Quantitative analysis of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) according to different models by engaging Geographic Information Systems (GIS) supports users to extract various types of information about landscapes where hydrological and topographic information are most important. Methods to prepare hydrological factors namely TWI, TRI, SPI, STI, TPI, stream density and distance to stream by processing DEM in GIS are discussed in this paper. These common hydrological factors are extensively used in many scientific research papers either for modelling or to measure their relationship with other environmental factors.•Hydrological factors have great importance in understanding the landscape and are widely used in scientific research, especially geo-environmental hazard mapping.•Physically based hydrological methods are engaged in ArcMap 10.5 software.•Commonly used hydrological factors are processed using freely available DEM and ArcMap 10.5 software.

RESUMO

Various factors, including heavy metals, can make fish more susceptible to disease. This study investigated, inter alia, the relationship between Pb, Cd, and Hg contamination of the organs and muscles of sea trout from the river Rega (Poland) and the occurrence of UDN (ulcerative skin necrosis) symptoms. Moreover, the dietary risk of Pb, Cd, and Hg uptake from the muscles of healthy sea trout was assessed based on estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), benchmark dose lower confidence limits (BMDL01 and BMDL10), and tolerable weekly intake (TWI). The metal concentrations varied, depending on the fish organs and the fish condition. A significantly higher amount of Pb was found in the gonads, gills, and muscles, Cd in the kidneys, and Hg in the muscles of sea trout with UDN symptoms. The lowest concentrations of Pb and Cd were detected in the muscles, and of Hg in the gonads. Dietary exposure to Pb, Cd, and Hg accounted for: 0.4% of BMDL01 and 1.0% of BMDL10, 0.56% of TWI, and 16.5% of TWI, respectively. THQs for each metal and the HI value for combined metals were below 1. The weakening of fish due to UDN-like disease probably increased the accumulation of Pb in the gonads, gills, and muscles, and of Cd in the kidneys, of the sea trout. As regards the maximum levels (MRLs), the muscles of healthy sea trout are safe for consumption. The risk assessment suggests no concern for the health of consumers.

RESUMO

The study objective was to measure fluid intake and associations with background characteristics and hydration biomarkers in healthy, free-living, non-pregnant women aged 15-69 years from Hargeisa city. We also wanted to estimate the proportion of euhydrated participants and corresponding biomarker cut-off values. Data from 136 women, collected through diaries and questionnaires, 24h urine samples and anthropometric measurements, were obtained with a cross-sectional, purposeful sampling from fifty-two school and health clusters, representing approximately 2250 women. The mean (95 % CI) 24 h total fluid intake (TFI) for all women was 2⋅04 (1⋅88, 2⋅20) litres. In multivariate regression with weight, age, parity and a chronic health problem, only weight remained a predictor (P 0.034, B 0.0156 (l/kg)). Pure water, Somali tea and juice from powder and syrup represented 49⋅3, 24⋅6 and 11⋅7 % of TFI throughout the year, respectively. Mean (95 % CI) 24 h urine volume (Uvol) was 1⋅28 (1⋅17, 1⋅39) litres. TFI correlated strongly with 24 h urine units (r 0.67) and Uvol (r 0.59). Approximately 40 % of the women showed inadequate hydration, using a threshold of urine specific gravity (Usg) of 1⋅013 and urine colour (Ucol) of 4. Five percent had Usg > 1⋅020 and concomitant Ucol > 6, indicating dehydration. TFI lower cut-offs for euhydrated, non-breast-feeding women were 1⋅77 litres and for breast-feeding, 2⋅13 litres. Euhydration cut-off for Uvol was 0⋅95 litre, equalling 9⋅2 urine units. With the knowledge of adverse health effects of habitual hypohydration, Somaliland women should be encouraged to a higher fluid intake.

RESUMO

Infectious bronchitis (IB) is a highly contagious avian disease caused by infection with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), which seriously affects the development of the global poultry industry. The distribution of TW I-type IBV in China has increased in recent years, becoming a widespread genotype. We previously isolated a TW I-type IBV strain termed CK/CH/GD/GZ14 in 2014, but its pathogenicity and possibility for vaccine development were not explored. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a live-attenuated virus vaccine based on the CK/CH/GD/GZ14 strain. The wild type IBV CK/CH/GD/GZ14 strain was serially passaged in SPF embryos for 145 generations. The morbidity and mortality rate of wild-type strain in 14 day-old chickens is 100% and 80% respectively, while the morbidity rate in the attenuated strain was 20% in the 95th and 105th generations and there was no death. Histopathological observations showed that the pathogenicity of the 95th and 105th generations in chickens was significantly weakened. Further challenge experiments confirmed that the attenuated CK/CH/GD/GZ14 strain in the 95th and 105th generations could resist CK/CH/GD/GZ14 (5th generation) infection and the protection rate was 80%. Tracheal cilia stagnation, virus shedding, and viral load experiments confirmed that the 95th and 105th generations provide good immune protection in chickens, and the immunogenicity of the 105th generation is better than that of the 95th generation. These data suggest that the attenuated CK/CH/GD/GZ14 strain in the 105th generation may be applied as a vaccine candidate against TW I-type IBV.

RESUMO

Cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) overlaps in clinical presentation with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy and shares phenotypic classification, including the presence of epsilon waves. The presence of conduction disease is seen exclusively in CS, as an important phenotypic difference. We present a case of ventricular tachycardia and epsilon waves due to CS, without conduction disease. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.).

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac dysfunction directly caused by spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a poorly understood phenomenon, and its impact on outcome is still uncertain. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between electrocardiographic (EKG) abnormalities and mortality in ICH. METHODS: This is a retrospective study analyzing EKG patterns on admission in patients admitted with ICH at a tertiary care center over an eight-year period. For each patient, demographics, medical history, clinical presentation, EKG on admission and during hospitalization, and head CT at presentation were reviewed. Mortality was noted. RESULTS: A total of 301 ICH patients were included in the study. The most prevalent EKG abnormalities were QTc prolongation in 56% of patients (n = 168) followed by inversion of T waves (TWI) in 37% of patients (n = 110). QTc prolongation was associated with ganglionic location (p = 0.03) and intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) (p = 0.01), TWIs were associated with ganglionic location (p = 0.02), and PR prolongation was associated with IVH (p = 0.01), while QRS prolongation was associated with lobar location (p < 0.01). Volume of ICH, hemispheric laterality, and involvement of insular cortex were not correlated with specific EKG patterns. In a logistic regression model, after correcting for ICH severity and prior cardiac history, presence of TWI was independently associated with mortality (OR: 3.04, CI:1.6-5.8, p < 0.01). Adding TWI to ICH score improved its prognostic accuracy (AUC 0.81, p = 0.04). Disappearance of TWI during hospitalization did not translate into improvement of survival (p = 0.5). CONCLUSION: Presence of TWI on admission is an independent and unmodifiable factor associated with mortality in ICH. Further research is needed to elucidate the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying electrocardiographic changes after primary intracerebral hemorrhage.

RESUMO

Transposable elements have both detrimental and beneficial effects on their host genome. Tetrahymena is a unicellular eukaryote that deals with transposable elements in a unique way. It has a separate somatic and germline genome in two nuclei in a single cell. During sexual reproduction, a small RNA directed system compares the germline and somatic genome to identify transposable elements and related sequences. These are subsequently marked by heterochromatin and excised. In this Review, current knowledge of this system and the gaps therein are discussed. Additionally, the possibility to exploit the Tetrahymena machinery for genome editing and its advantages over the widely used CRISPR-Cas9 system will be explored. While the bacterial derived CRISPR-Cas9 has difficulty to access eukaryotic chromatin, Tetrahymena proteins are adept at acting in a chromatin context. Furthermore, Tetrahymena based gene therapy in humans might be a safer alternative to Cas9 because the latter can trigger an immune response.

RESUMO

The N1 event-related potential (ERP) enhancement to auditory transients preceded briefly by another transient has been interpreted as a reflection of latent inhibition, or alternatively, as a superimposing mismatch negativity (MMN) to rare transient event combinations. In a previous study (Volosin, Gaál, & Horváth, 2017a), when rare glides preceded frequent gaps by 150 ms in continuous tones, gap-related N1 was enhanced in younger adults while P2 was attenuated both in younger and older adults, which could be parsimoniously explained by MMN overlap which was delayed with aging. The present study replicated and extended these results with a condition in which the roles of the two event types were reversed. Transients separated by 150 ms elicited delayed MMN in older adults, supporting the MMN interpretation over the latent inhibition account. Furthermore, the divergence of N1 and MMN elicitation patterns demonstrated the independence of N1 and MMN.

RESUMO

Akita prefecture is located in the northern part of Japan and has many cadmium-polluted areas. We herein performed an exposure assessment of cadmium in 712 and 432 female farmers in two adjacent cadmium-polluted areas (A and B, respectively), who underwent local health examinations from 2001-2004. We measured cadmium concentrations in 100 food items collected from local markets in 2003. We then multiplied the intake of each food item by its cadmium concentration in each subject to assess cadmium intake from food and summed cadmium intake from all food items to obtain the total cadmium intake. Median cadmium intake levels in areas A and B were 55.7 and 47.8 µg/day, respectively, which were both higher than that of the general population and were attributed to local agricultural products, particularly rice. We also calculated weekly cadmium intake per body weight and compared it to the previous provisional tolerable weekly intake reported by the Joint FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization)/WHO (World Health Organization) expert committee on food additives or current tolerable weekly intake in Japan of 7 µg/kg BW/week. Medians in areas A and B were 7.2 and 6.0 µg/kg BW/week, respectively. Similar estimated values were also obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation. These results demonstrated that the cadmium exposure levels among the farmers were high enough to be approximately the tolerable weekly intake.

RESUMO

Cardiac memory (CM) is a commonly unrecognized entity in which electrocardiograph (EKG) changes demonstrate T wave inversions (TWI) that appear consistent with ischemia. Inability to recognize and distinguish CM from actual ischemia can be a burden for both patients and hospitals, leading to unnecessary hospital admission, cardiac testing, and cardiac catheterization. Simple EKG analysis and meticulous interpretation of T-wave axis and morphology can help differentiate between the two. We present a case with such a dilemma, and an overview literature and physiology behind this entity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate associations between compliance with recommendations for total water intake (TWI) and total water intake from fluids (TWIF), and some socio-demographic and lifestyle factors of a senior Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis with data of 1902 participants from the PREDIMED-Plus study. A validated 32-item Spanish fluid-intake questionnaire was used to assess beverage consumption and water intake. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) for complying with European Food Safety Agency recommendations for TWI and TWIF according to various socio-demographic and lifestyle factors, and for the joint associations of Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) adherence and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). RESULTS: The mean total volume of fluid intake in the population studied was 1934 ± 617 mL/day. Water was the most frequently consumed beverage. Significant differences between sex were only observed in alcoholic and hot beverage consumption. Compliance with TWIF was associated with being women (OR 3.02; 2.40, 3.80), high adherence to MedDiet (OR 1.07; 1.02, 1.12), and participants who were more engaged in physical activity (PA) (OR 1.07; 1.02, 1.13). Age was inversely associated (OR 0.96; 0.94, 0.98). Similar results for TWI recommendations compliance were observed in relation to being women (OR 5.34; 3.85, 7.42), adherence to MedDiet (OR 1.16; 1.02, 1.31) and PA (OR 1.07; 1.00, 1.15). The joint association of PA and MedDiet, showed that participants with higher adherence to MedDiet and meeting WHO recommendations for MVPA complied better with the TWI recommendations (OR 1.66; 1.19, 2.32). CONCLUSIONS: High compliance with recommendations for TWI was associated with being a woman, and a healthy lifestyle characterized by high adherence to the MedDiet and PA.

RESUMO

The overall aim of the present study was to assess human exposure to environmental contaminants from consumption of harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) meat in the southwestern Baltic Sea. For this purpose, muscle tissue from harbour seals (n = 27) was sampled from Danish locations in the period 2005-2015 and analysed for concentrations of total mercury (Hg), organochlorine contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides as well as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with particular focus on perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Hg, ∑PCB, PFOS and PFOA concentrations in the muscle tissue ranged between 0.27 and 4.76 µg g-1 wet weight (ww; mean: 1.38 µg g-1 ww, n = 27), 12.2-137 ng g-1 ww (mean: 47.5 ng g-1 ww, n = 10), 6.95-33.6 ng g-1 ww (mean: 15.8 ng g-1 ww, n = 10) and 0.16-0.55 ng g-1 ww (mean: 0.28 ng g-1 ww, n = 10), respectively. We compared the concentrations with literature-derived human tolerable weekly intake (TWI) values for mercury (1.3 µg kg-1 week-1), ∑PCB (2.1 µg kg-1 week-1), PFOS (0.013 µg kg-1 week-1) and PFOA (0.006 µg kg-1 week-1). The comparisons showed that the weekly consumption of harbour seal meat by children (weighing 30 kg), women (weighing 60 kg) and men (weighing 80 kg) should not exceed 28, 57 and 76 g (for Hg), 1.3, 2.7 and 3.5 kg (for ∑PCB), 25, 50 and 67 g (for PFOS) and 640, 1290 and 1720 g (for PFOA). In conclusion, Hg and PFOS are the contaminants of most importance in seal meat from this area with respect to existing tolerable intake rates and risks of adverse human health effects.

RESUMO

This study presents a theoretical framework based on power law distribution to identify the vulnerable regions to soil loss in Susu river basin at Cameron Highlands, Malaysia by using the geomorphologic factors from Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Drainage area is used to describe the runoff aggregation structure of the watershed which represents the magnitude of discharge. Stream power is also used to describe the energy expenditure pattern of the watershed. They are fitted to power law distribution by means of the maximum likelihood to estimate the threshold for soil loss. The landscape stability condition is assessed through the mechanism of channel initiation. Two regions in the slope area plot are recognized as the regimes susceptible to soil loss, in that discharge, local slope and energy are sufficient for the initiation of soil movement. The result is further improved by incorporating the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) aiming to locate vulnerable regions to soil loss under the dynamic saturation process. The final result indicates that the vulnerable regions expand from perennial reaches to ephemeral reaches as saturation process develops. It implies the transition of runoff generation from groundwater in perennial reaches to surface runoff in ephemeral reaches. Identification of soil loss vulnerable regions under the dynamic saturation process helps in planning of the mitigation measures for soil erosion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The difference in autofluorescence between enamel and dentine layer has prompted recommendations to use the quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) method for quantifying tooth wear (TW). This study investigated the potential of QLF for distinguishing the severity of occlusal TW based on differences in the autofluorescence intensity. METHODS: In total, 106 extracted permanent molars and premolars having suspected wear without pulp exposure were used. The severity of wear was determined by visually examining all teeth using the tooth wear index (TWI) of Smith and Knight. QLF images were captured and converted into 8-bit grayscale images. The difference in the fluorescence intensity (ΔG) was calculated by comparing mean grayscale levels between sound and worn areas. Finally, histological examination was conducted by stereomicroscope to confirm the presence of dentine exposure. RESULTS: 100 teeth were included in the final analysis without six teeth having enamel cracks around worn area. The ΔG values increased with the severity of TW as quantified using conventional TWI codes, and differed significantly between the sound and enamel- and dentine-wear teeth (P < 0.001). The histology indicated that enamel remained on 57 teeth, while 43 teeth had dentine-exposed wear and showed significant differences in ΔG compared with enamel-remained teeth. CONCLUSIONS: The fluorescence intensity differed significantly depending on the presence of dentine exposure. ΔG could be used to distinguish between sound and enamel- and dentine-wear teeth with a significant correlation. These findings indicate that QLF could be useful for determining the severity of TW of occlusal surfaces noninvasively.

RESUMO

AIM: To design and validate a MNREAD Asante Twi version reading chart, to aid in the assessment of near visual acuity of natives Ghanaians. METHODS: Cross-sectional and experimental designs were employed in phases I and II respectively of this study. The chart was developed using 20 transited pupils in class four in the Kumasi metropolis in phase I and validated in a clinical setting at the Manhyia District Hospital, Kumasi, using students in phase II. RESULTS: A total of 100 participants (mean age; 22.19 ± 1.61 years) were involved in the second phase of this study. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was computed to assess the relationship between MNREAD Asante Twi charts logMAR scores in both eyes. The MNREAD-Asante Twi acuity charts had very strong correlations (r = 0.94, p < 0.001) for MNREAD set 1A (black on white background) scores and MNREAD set 2A (black on white background) for acuity scores. Correlation between MNREAD set 1B (white on black background) scores and MNREAD set 2B (white on black background) scores was r = 0.95, p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: MNREAD Asante Twi reading chart will enhance the measurement of near visual function in native Ghanaians.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the amounts and contributions of total drinking fluids and water from food to total water intake (TWI), to explore the drinking pattern, and to compare the amount of TWI with the recommendations of China and EFSA among young adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was implemented with 159 young adults aged 18-23 years from Hebei, China. Total drinking fluids and water from food were assessed by 7-day 24-h fluid intake questionnaire and the duplicate portion method, respectively. Differences between groups stratified according to the distribution of TWI were compared using one-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis H test. General linear models were used to identify the variations in TWI due to total drinking fluids and water from food. RESULTS: In total, 156 subjects (80 males and 76 females) completed the study. Approximately 80.1% of them did not meet the TWI recommended by China, while 50.0% did not meet that recommended by the EFSA. Participants with higher TWI had greater amounts of total drinking fluids, water rom food and water than their counterparts with lower TWI. The regression between total drinking fluids and TWI was R2 = 0.8526 (P < 0.05) and that between water from food and TWI was R2 = 0.4650 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: A large proportion of young adults have insufficient TWI. Participants with lower TWI would not compensate with water from food. The variances in TWI among participants were mainly due to differences in total drinking fluids. There is an urgent need to improve the fluids intake behaviors of young adults.
