RESUMO

Genitourinary tuberculosis (GU TB) is a rare condition that has historically been described as a great imitator, owing to its variable and deceptive clinical presentation and course. GU TB may affect any part of the urological system and lead to serious complications such as kidney and ureteric damage. The diagnosis of GU TB requires high index of suspicion especially if complications occur. We describe the first case of spontaneous ureteric perforation secondary to GU TB as spontaneous bladder perforation was previously described.

RESUMO

A double-thimble-type fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensor that isolates the stress strain is developed, and the three materials of air, grease, and copper thimble are employed for encapsulating. To investigate the effect of different encapsulation materials on the time constant of the sensors under dynamic conditions, the transient heat conduction mathematical model is built according to the lumped heat capacity (LHC) system and thermal equilibrium theory, and the time constant is solved by an analytical solution. Then, a proportional three-dimensional sensor simulation model is established and the transient heat transfer process is numerically solved by the finite element analysis method. To verify the models, an experimental system is established to test the response speed of the three-type sensor and the experimental data are compared with the analytical and numerical solution results. The results show that the dynamic response performance depends on the encapsulation material parameters; the response speed is faster than recovery speed; and the response speed of the air packaging sensor is more than 20% faster than that of the grease packaging sensor, and more than 30% faster than that of the copper packaging sensor. The smaller the heat storage capacity and the larger the heat transfer coefficient, the faster the sensor's response speed.

RESUMO

In elderly patients with few remaining teeth, overdenture is a good treatment option. Roots beneath the denture protect the alveolar ridge, offer proprioception and improve retention, stability and masticatory efficiency of dentures. Customization of attachments available is a viable alternative for some patients in which prefabricated attachments cannot be placed or in which cost is a factor; to improve the final outcome of the treatment. Due to competitive commercialization, implant treatment has become the norm in current dentistry and the concept of tooth supported overdentures has eclipsed, but with proper case selection, thorough treatment planning and modifications in the denture such as customization of attachments, amalgam stops, cross-linked teeth, and metallic mesh can be applied to prolong the longevity and success of the attachment overdenture prosthesis.

RESUMO

This paper describes the design and calibration of a thimble that measures the forces applied by a user during manipulation of virtual and real objects. Haptic devices benefit from force measurement capabilities at their end-point. However, the heavy weight and cost of force sensors prevent their widespread incorporation in these applications. The design of a lightweight, user-adaptable, and cost-effective thimble with four contact force sensors is described in this paper. The sensors are calibrated before being placed in the thimble to provide normal and tangential forces. Normal forces are exerted directly by the fingertip and thus can be properly measured. Tangential forces are estimated by sensors strategically placed in the thimble sides. Two applications are provided in order to facilitate an evaluation of sensorized thimble performance. These applications focus on: (i) force signal edge detection, which determines task segmentation of virtual object manipulation, and (ii) the development of complex object manipulation models, wherein the mechanical features of a real object are obtained and these features are then reproduced for training by means of virtual object manipulation.

RESUMO

Objective To facilitate activity measurement by using the thimble ionization chamber in hospitals,to obtain air kerma scatter correction factor of medical afterloading of 192Ir source by developing an available and convenient calculation method. Methods According to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 1079 Report to calculate the scatter correction factor of 192 Ir source,to measure air kenna of 192Ir source with and without lead shield using thimble ionization chamber.Simulation measurement conditions were used to calculate scatter correction factor of 192Ir source and comparison was made between experimental results and literature records. At the same time, the different ionization chamber models were simulated at different room sizes to obtain scattering correction factor of 192 Ir source.ResultsComparison was made between the simulation scatter correction factors of 192Ir source and experiment by the shadow shield, and the relative deviation was 0.8%.The deviation of the 192 Ir activity calculated according to the simulated scatter correction factor and measured by well type ionization chamber was 2.4%.By comparison between the calculated results by using two kinds of spherical ionization chamber and those ones deduced by IAEA 1079 Report, the relative deviations ranged within 0.3%-0.4%.Five different types of thimble ionization chamber and different room sizes were simulated and calculated by MC simulation, with the relative deviation within 3%.Conclusions Monte Carlo simulation method for calculating afterloading 192 Ir source's scatter correction factor is feasible, and this method is convenient for use in the thimble chamber for brachytherapy QA work in the hospital.

RESUMO

Green nail syndrome is a chronic nail infection by Pseudomonas aeurginosa. Infected lesions can involve both finger and toe nails and cause greenish discoloration and onycholysis. Environmental factors such as frequent hydration and external trauma are predisposing factors. A 37-year-old patient was diagnosed with green nail syndrome on the right thumb. She used a thimble for a long time as a dress designer. Herein, we describe an uncommon case of green nail syndrome by chronic thimble use as a rare and an educational report.
