RESUMO

Accurate assessments of the soil environmental capacity are important for evaluating heavy metal pollution levels, facilitating effective prevention and control measures against such pollution. However, due to the lack of risk screening values for certain key elements, such as Rb, Sn, and Th, the assessment of the soil environmental capacity is not comprehensive. Therefore, in this study, the Menyuan-Huangzhong area of Qinghai Province was selected as the research area, and local background and risk values were established via multifractal analysis, thereby systematically examining the environmental capacity. The findings indicated that within the study area, the static environmental capacity values of 15 elements could be ranked as follows: Ba, Cu, Zn, Cr, Rb, Ni, La, Pb, Th, As, U, Sn, Tl, Cd, and Hg. In general, the residual capacity distribution of the various elements varied across the study area, with lower values primarily found in the northern and central regions and higher values obtained in the northwestern and southwestern regions. Between 2018 and 2068, there was a notable and rapid decline in the dynamic environmental capacity of Hg, Cu, and Cd in the study area. In the Menyuan-Huangzhong area of Qinghai, the average comprehensive soil environmental capacity index reached 0.91, indicating a moderate environmental capacity and slight associated health risks. The findings of this study could serve as a valuable reference for soil heavy metal pollution assessment, early warning, and management in this area; enhance the study of soil environmental capacity methods; and provide a theoretical foundation for subsequent research.

RESUMO

Phlomoidesbomiensis, a new species in Bomi County, Xizang, China, was described and illustrated. In addition, Phlomoideslongidentata, previously only known from Nepal and Bhutan, is newly recorded from Dingri County, Xizang, China. The phylogenetic placement of both species within the genus was analysed using nine plastid DNA markers (atpB-rbcL, psbA-trnH, rpl16, rpl32-trnL, rps16, trnK, trnL-trnF, trnS-trnG, trnT-trnL). Both species have brown-black trichomes inside the upper corolla lip and nested within the same subclade of Clade II. A diagnostic key to the Phlomoides species belonging to this subclade is provided.

RESUMO

The ice lakes in the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have exhibited a pronounced expansion against the backdrop of global warming, consequently amplifying the local risk of ice lake outburst disasters. However, surveys of ice lake changes in the entire region have consistently been incomplete due to the prevalent high cloud density. On the basis of Landsat remote sensing images and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform, in this study, the full convolution segmentation algorithm is utilized to accurately and comprehensively map the regional distribution of ice lakes in southeastern Tibet at consistent time intervals in 1993, 2008, and 2023. Furthermore, the formation, distribution, and dynamic changes in these ice lakes are investigated. The numbers of ice lakes discovered in 1993, 2008, and 2023 were 2520, 3198, and 3877, respectively. These lakes covered areas of approximately 337.64 ± 36.86 km2, 363.92 ± 40.90 km2, and 395.74 ± 22.72 km2, respectively. These ice lakes are located primarily between altitudes of 4442 m and 4909 m. The total area experienced an annual growth rate of approximately 0.57 % from 1993 to 2023. In the present study, the long-term variations in ice lakes in each district and county are examined. These findings indicate that between 1993 and 2023, the expansion of ice lakes was more pronounced in regions with a large number of marine glaciers. Notably, Basu County presented the highest annual growth rate of the ice lake population, at 6.23 %, followed by Bomi County, at 4.28 %, and finally, Zayul County, at 2.94 %. The accelerated shrinkage of marine glaciers induced by global warming is the primary driver behind the expansion of ice lakes. The results obtained from this research will enhance our overall understanding of the complex dynamics and mechanisms that govern the formation of ice lakes while also offering valuable perspectives on the potential risks linked to their expansion in this particular area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: After a 920-day hiatus, COVID-19 resurged in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China in August 2022. This study compares the characteristics of COVID-19 between high-altitude residents and newcomers, as well as between newcomers and lowlanders. METHODS: This multi-center cohort study conducted at the Third People's Hospital of Tibet Autonomous Region and Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital, included 520 high-altitude resident patients, 53 high-altitude newcomer patients, and 265 lowlander patients infected with the Omicron variant. Initially, we documented epidemiological, clinical, and treatment data across varying residency at admission. We compared the severity of COVID-19 and various laboratory indicators, including hemoglobin concentration and SpO2%, over a 14-day period from the date of the first positive nucleic acid test, as well as the differences in treatment methods and disease outcomes between highlanders and high-altitude newcomers. We also compared several characteristics of COVID-19 between high-altitude newcomers and lowlanders. Univariate analysis, multivariable logistic regression, and the generalized linear mixed model were utilized for the analysis. RESULTS: No fatalities were observed. The study found no significant differences in COVID-19 severity or in the physiological measures of hemoglobin concentration and SpO2% between high-altitude and lowland residents. Similarly, there were no statistically significant differences in the values or trends of hemoglobin and SpO2% between high-altitude residents and newcomers throughout the 14-day observation period. However, compared to age- and sex-matched lowlander patients (1:5 ratio), high-altitude newcomers exhibited higher heart rates, respiratory rates, and average hemoglobin concentrations, along with lower platelet counts. There were no significant differences in hospital stays between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: High-altitude residents and newcomer patients exhibit clinical similarities. However, the clinical characteristics of high-altitude newcomers and lowlander patients differ due to the impact of the high-altitude environment. These results highlight potential considerations for public health strategies in high-altitude regions such as Tibet.

RESUMO

During the metamorphosis of anuran amphibians, the tail resorption process is a necessary and crucial change. One subject that has received relatively little or no attention is the expression patterns of proteins and metabolites in the different tail portions during metamorphosis, especially in highland amphibians. The mechanisms of tail resorption in three portions (the tip, middle and root) of the tail were investigated in N. pleskei G43 tadpole based on two omics (proteomic and metabolomic). Integrin αVß3 was found to be high expressed in the distal portion of the tail, which could improve the sensitiveness to thyroid hormones in the distal portion of the tail. Muscle regression displayed a spatial pattern with stronger regression in distal and weaker one in proximal portion. Probably, this stronger regression was mainly performed by the proteases of proteasome from the active translation by ribosomes. The suicide model and murder model coexisted in the tail resorption. Meanwhile, fatty acids, amino acids, pyrimidine, and purine which derived from the breakdown of tissues can be used as building blocks or energy source for successful metamorphosis. Our data improved a better comprehension of the tail resorption mechanisms underlying the metamorphism of N. pleskei tadpole through identifying important participating proteins and metabolites.

RESUMO

Angqu, positioned in the eastern expanse of the Tibet Plateau, claims the title of the largest tributary to the Lancang River. In October and December of 2018, in the sediment of Angqu, a comprehensive investigation was conducted on nine heavy metals-arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni). This investigation aimed to scrutinize the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of these metals, assess the pollution status and ecological risks associated with the sediments, and delve into the sources contributing to their presence. The research results indicate that the average concentrations of As, Hg, and Cd in Angqu sediments exceed the soil background values of Tibet, while the concentrations of other heavy metals are below the soil background values of Tibet. Notably, arsenic poses potential ecological risks. In Angqu sediments, the concentrations of Mn, Cu, Ni, and Pb are generally higher in the wet season, but the seasonal variations of heavy metals in Angqu sediments are not significant. The sediments in the Angqu Basin are predominantly affected by mercury Hg, Cd, and As, with varying degrees of pollution at different sampling points. In the main stream of Angqu (City section), Hg pollution has reached above a moderate level, whereas As pollution near the tributary is only slightly polluted. The analysis of heavy metal sources reveals that there are five primary contributors to heavy metals in surface sediments of Angqu: parent material, agricultural activities, groundwater, atmospheric deposition, and other unidentified sources. Mn, Cr, Pb, and Ni are mainly derived from soil parent material, accounting for more than 50%. About 60.82% of As comes primarily from groundwater. Zn and Cd are mainly sourced from agricultural activities, accounting for 41.25% and 34.33%, respectively. Additionally, 20.6% of Hg originates from atmospheric deposition.

RESUMO

The ecology of the Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau is fragile, and the ecosystems in the region are difficult to remediate once damaged. Currently, landfilling is the mainstay of domestic waste disposal in China, and numerous, widely distributed county landfills exist. trace elements (TEs) in waste are gradually released with waste degradation and cannot be degraded in nature, affecting environmental quality and human health. To reduce the chance bias that exists in studies of individual landfills, we selected 11 representative county landfills in Tibet, total of 76 soil samples were collected, eight TEs (arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn)) were determined, and analysed for the current status of pollution, risk to human health, and sources of TEs to explore the impact of the landfills. The results showed that only a few landfills had individual TEs exceeding the risk screening value of the Soil Environmental Quality Risk Control Standard for Soil Contamination (GB 15618-2018) (pH > 7.5). Most of the soils around the landfills had moderate levels of pollution, but some individual landfills had higher levels, mainly due to Cd and Hg concentrations. Source analysis showed that Hg originated mainly from atmospheric transport; the other TEs came mainly from the weathering of soil parent material and bedrock. The potential risk from TEs to human health was low, and the risk to children was greater than the risk to adults. Among the three exposure routes, oral ingestion resulted in the highest carcinogenic risk and noncarcinogenic risk, with a contribution rate of more than 95%. Among the TEs, Ni had the highest carcinogenic risk, followed by Cr and As, and As had the highest noncarcinogenic risk.

RESUMO

The alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have significant potential for storing soil carbon, which is important to global carbon sequestration. Grazing is a major threat to its potential for carbon sequestration. However, grazing poses a major threat to this potential by speeding up the breakdown of organic matter in the soil and releasing carbon, which may further lead to positive carbon-climate change feedback and threaten ecological security. Therefore, in order to accurately explore the driving mechanism and regulatory factors of soil organic matter decomposition in grazing alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we took the grazing sample plots of typical alpine meadows as the research object and set up grazing intensities of different life cycles, aiming to explore the relationship and main regulatory factors of grazing on soil organic matter decomposition and soil microorganisms. The results show the following: (1) soil microorganisms, especially Acidobacteria and Acidobacteria, drove the decomposition of organic matter in the soil, thereby accelerating the release of soil carbon, which was not conducive to soil carbon sequestration in grassland; (2) the grazing triggering effect formed a positive feedback with soil microbial carbon release, accelerating the decomposition of organic matter and soil carbon loss; and (3) the grazing ban and light grazing were more conducive to slowing down soil organic matter decomposition and increasing soil carbon sequestration.

RESUMO

The nitrogen cycling process in alpine wetlands is profoundly affected by precipitation changes, yet the dynamic response mechanism of denitrifiers to long-term precipitation shifts in the alpine wetland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau remains enigmatic. Utilizing high-throughput sequencing analysis of nirS-type functional genes, this study delved into the dynamic response mechanism of nirS-type denitrifiers to precipitation changes in the alpine wetland of Qinghai Lake. The findings revealed that nirS-type denitrifiers in the alpine wetland of Qinghai Lake were primarily Proteobacteria, and Alpha diversity exhibited a negative correlation with the precipitation gradient, with deterministic processes predominating in the community assembly of denitrifying microbes. A 50% increase in rainfall shifted the community assembly process of denitrifiers from deterministic to stochastic. Dominant microflora at the genus level responded significantly to precipitation changes, with aerobic bacteria comprising the majority of differentially abundant taxa (55.56%). As precipitation increased, the complexity of the microbial interaction network decreased, and a 25% reduction in precipitation notably elevated the relative abundance of three key functional groups: chemoheterotrophic, aerobic chemoheterotrophic, and nitrogen fixation. Precipitation notably emerged as the primary regulator of nirS-type denitrifiers in the alpine wetland of Qinghai Lake, accounting for 51% of the variation in community composition. In summary, this study offers a fresh perspective for investigating the ecological processes of nitrogen cycling in alpine ecosystems by examining the diversity and community composition of nirS-type denitrifiers in response to precipitation changes.

RESUMO

Biological nitrogen (N) fixation is a pivotal N source in N-deficient ecosystems. The Qinghai‒Tibet Plateau (QTP) region, which is assumed to be N limited and suboxic, is an ideal habitat for diazotrophs. However, the diazotrophic communities and associated N fixation rates in these high-altitude alpine permafrost QTP rivers remain largely unknown. Herein, we examined diazotrophic communities in the sediment and biofilm of QTP rivers via the nitrogenase (nifH) gene sequencing and assessed their N fixing activities via a 15N isotope incubation assay. Strikingly, anaerobic heterotrophic diazotrophs, such as sulfate- and iron-reducing bacteria, had emerged as dominant N fixers. Remarkably, the nifH gene abundance and N fixation rates increased with altitude, and the average nifH gene abundance (2.57 ± 2.60 × 108 copies g-1) and N fixation rate (2.29 ± 3.36 nmol N g-1d-1) surpassed that documented in most aquatic environments (nifH gene abundance: 1.31 × 105 ∼ 2.57 × 108 copies g-1, nitrogen fixation rates: 2.34 × 10-4 ∼ 4.11 nmol N g-1d-1). Such distinctive heterotrophic diazotrophic communities and high N fixation potential in QTP rivers were associated with low-nitrogen, abundant organic carbon and unique C:N:P stoichiometries. Additionally, the significant presence of psychrophilic bacteria within the diazotrophic communities, along with the enhanced stability and complexity of the diazotrophic networks at higher altitudes, clearly demonstrate the adaptability of diazotrophic communities to extreme cold and high-altitude conditions in QTP rivers. We further determined that altitude, coupled with organic carbon and phosphorus, was the predominant driver shaping diazotrophic communities and their N-fixing activities. Overall, our study reveals high N fixation potential in N-deficient QTP rivers, which provides novel insights into nitrogen dynamics in alpine permafrost rivers.

RESUMO

Cellobiose 2-epimerase (CE) catalyzes the conversion of the lactose into its high-value derivatives, epilactose and lactulose, which has great prospects in food applications. In this study, CE sequences from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau gene catalogue, we screened these for structural flexibility through molecular dynamics simulation to identify potential psychrophilic CE candidates. One such psychrophilic CE we termed psyCE demonstrated exceptional epimerization activity, achieving an optimum activity of 122.2 ± 1.6 U/mg. Its kinetic parameters (Kcat and Km) for epimerization activity were 219.9 ± 5.6 s-1 and 261.9 ± 18.1 mM, respectively, representing the highest Kcat recorded among known cold-active CEs. Notably, this is the first report of a psychrophilic CE. The psyCE can effectively produce epilactose at 8 °C, converting 20.3 % of 200 mM lactose into epilactose within four hours. These findings suggest that psyCE is highly suitable for cryogenic food processing, and glaciers may serve as a valuable repository of psychrophilic enzymes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common complications of diabetes worldwide. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in Tibet and to identify risk factors that may influence the occurrence of DR. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a third-class hospital in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with T2DM was measured. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis and receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis were used to investigate the risk factors for DR. RESULTS: The prevalence of DR was 29.3%. The duration of diabetes; concentrations of 25-OH-VitD3, hemoglobin, fasting insulin, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and creatinine; and HOMA-IR were significantly different between DR patients and non-DR patients (all P < 0.05). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression revealed that a longer duration of diabetes and lower 25-OH-VitD3 levels were associated with increased DR risk. RCS analysis suggested overall positive associations of the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 concentrations with DR risk (P nonlinearity < 0.05). The turning points for the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 concentrations were 5.1 years and 10.6 ng/mL, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for the combination of the duration of diabetes and 25-OH-VitD3 levels were 79.4%, 69.4% and 0.764, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Given the high prevalence of DR in hospitalized patients with T2DM in Tibet, vitamin D supplementation seems to be important in the prevention of DR to some degree.

RESUMO

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau stands as one of the most ecologically fragile and biodiversity-rich regions globally. Understanding the distribution of different taxa and their relationship with environmental factors is crucial for effective conservation and sustainable management. Polytrichaceae, a significant bryophyte family widely distributed in Tibet, displays distinct structural, morphological, and phylogenetic traits compared to other mosses. Despite its importance, the distribution of Polytrichaceae in Tibet and its correlation with environmental factors have yet to be explored. In this study, we used an optimized Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) model to explore the potential suitable habitats of Polytrichaceae in Tibet, aiming to clarify their geographic distribution pattern as well as the key environmental influence factors. The model had high accuracy with an average Area Under the Curve (AUC) of 0.933 and True Skill Statistics (TSS) value of 0.789. The results showed that the potential suitability habitats of Polytrichaceae were mainly located in southeastern Tibet, and the low suitable, moderately suitable, and highly suitable habitats accounted for 12.53 %, 6.84 %, and 3.31 % of the total area of Tibet respectively. Unsuitable habitats were mainly located in northwestern Tibet, accounting for about 77.32 %. In Tibet, temperature factors (Mean Temperature of Coldest Quarter (Bio11) and Annual Mean Temperature (Bio1)) played a pivotal role in determining the potential suitable habitats for Polytrichaceae, and elevation, precipitation, and vegetation coverage also had an important influence. The family preferred warm, moist and densely vegetated habitats in Tibet. This study enriched our ecological understanding of bryophyte ecology in this region and provided data-driven support for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem management in Tibet.

RESUMO

The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and disturbances caused by human activity. To better understand the interactions between soil nitrogen and sulfur cycles and human activities on the plateau, the distribution characteristics of soil nitrogen and sulfur density and their influencing factors for three soil layers in Machin County at depths of 0-20 cm, 0-100 cm, and 0-180 cm are discussed in this paper. The results indicated that at depths of 0-180 cm, soil nitrogen density in Machin County varied between 1.36 and 16.85 kg/m2, while sulfur density ranged from 0.37 to 4.61 kg/m2. The effects of three factors-geological background, land use status, and soil type-on soil nitrogen and sulfur density were all highly significant (p < 0.01). Specifically, natural factors such as soil type and geological background, along with anthropogenic factors including land use practices and grazing intensity, were identified as decisive in causing spatial variations in soil nitrogen and sulfur density. Machin County on the Tibetan Plateau exhibits natural nitrogen and sulfur sinks; However, it is crucial to monitor the emissions of N2O and SO2 into the atmosphere from areas with high external nitrogen and sulfur inputs and low fertility retention capacities, such as bare land. On this basis, changes in the spatial and temporal scales of the nitrogen and sulfur cycles in soils and their source-sink relationships remain the focus of future research.

RESUMO

The environmental impact of dissolved trace element (DTE) pollution is becoming increasingly well understood. The southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is a region with high environmental vulnerability, making it highly susceptible to various anthropogenic disturbances. The Lancang River (LCR), as the most representative river in this area, serving as the largest international river in Southeast Asia, the LCR is crucial for the downstream regions, supporting fisheries, agriculture, and even economic development, earning it the title of the "water tower" for these areas. This study mainly focuses on the upstream unbuilt dam area. In this study, we gathered 25 surface water samples from the upstream of the LCR and examined the geographical distribution, primary sources, and associated human health risks of seven dissolved trace elements (Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn). Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu in the main stream are primarily associated with natural sources, including rock weathering, soil erosion, and similar processes. Mn, however, predominantly originates from human activities such as industrial construction and road transportation. Zn mainly originates from the specialized fertilizers used for highland barley in plateau regions. Almost all DTE concentrations exhibited a downward trend from upstream to downstream. However, due to inputs from various sources along the way, there will be some abnormal points. The concentrations of DTE in the study area were within the acceptable limits set by drinking water standards in China, the USA, and the WHO. Overall, the water quality in this region is considered good. The results from a Monte Carlo simulation assessing health risks indicate that the non-carcinogenic health risk caused by DTE in the upper reaches of Lancang River was very weak. The primary pathway through which DTE can harm human health is ingestion, with children being particularly vulnerable. These findings offer a critical scientific basis for understanding the migration of DTE in aquatic environments and for the ecological stewardship of the Lancang River.

RESUMO

Predicting changes in future land use and farmland production potential (FPP) within the context of shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) and representative concentration pathways (RCPs) is crucial for devising sustainable land use strategies that balance agricultural production and ecological conservation. Therefore, the Huangshui Basin (HSB) in the northeast Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is taken as the study area, and a LUCC-Plus-FPP (LPF) coupling framework based on the SSP-RCP scenarios is proposed to evaluate future land use patterns and FPP changes. On the basis of the predictions of land use changes from 2020 to 2070, the trade-offs in grain production resulting from bivariate changes in farmland and FPP under future scenarios are analyzed. The results indicate that the model has a high simulation accuracy for land use types, with an overall accuracy of 0.98, a kappa coefficient of 0.97, and a figure of merit value of 0.21. Under the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, built-up land increases significantly, by approximately 45.89 %. Farmland and grassland conversions contribute the most to increased built-up land. Farmland area consistently decreases by approximately 5 % across all scenarios. The protection of farmland in the study area is difficult to undertake and thus requires much attention. Moreover, under the SSP126 scenario, the FPP of most districts is greater than that in 2020, and the average FPP of the HSB from 2030 to 2070 is greater than that in 2020. In the SSP585 scenario, by 2070, the average FPP of all districts decreases to different degrees compared with that in 2020. Furthermore, the compensated farmland quantities and average FPPs under all the scenarios are significantly lower than the amount of occupied farmland. The results provide a theoretical foundation and data support for farmland protection decision-making and layout optimization in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Wetland ecosystems in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), the region with the richest biodiversity and the most important ecological barrier function at high altitudes, are highly sensitive to global change, and wetland plants, which are important indicators of wetland ecosystem structure and function, are also threatened by wetland degradation. Therefore, a comprehensive study of changes in the geographical distribution pattern of plant diversity, as well as species loss and turnover of wetlands in the QTP in the context of global climate change is of great importance for the conservation and restoration of wetland ecosystems in the QTP. In this study, species turnover and loss of 395 endemic wetland plants of the QTP were predicted based on the SSP2-4.5 climate change scenarios. The results showed that there were interspecific differences in the effects of climate change on the potential distribution of species, and that most endemic wetland plants would experience range contraction. Under the climate change scenarios, the loss of suitable wetland plant habitat is expected to occur mainly in parts of the southern, north-central and north-western parts of the plateau, while the gain is mainly concentrated in parts of the western Sichuan Plateau, the Qilian Mountains, the Three Rivers Source Region and the northern Tibetan Plateau. Overlaying the analysis of priority protected areas with the established protected areas in the QTP has resulted in the following conservation gaps: the eastern Himalayan region, midstream of the Yarlung Zangbo River, the transition zone between the northern Tibetan Plateau and the Hengduan Mountains, Minshan-Qionglai mountain, Anyemaqen Mountains (southeast) to Bayankala (southeast) mountains, the southern foothills of the Qilian Mountains and the northern Tibetan Plateau region. In the future, the study of wetland plant diversity in the QTP and the optimisation of protected areas should focus on the conservation gaps. This study is of great importance for the study and conservation of wetland plant diversity in the QTP, and also provides a scientific basis for predicting the response of wetland plants to climate change in the QTP.

RESUMO

The Tibetan Plateau, a typical high-altitude area, is less affected by human activities such as industrial development, and the external pollution to water sources is extremely low. Then it is also an important source of water samples for exploring the molecular characteristics of precursors in the dissolved organic matter (DOM) of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. Research data on DBPs in drinking water on the Tibet Plateau remains insufficient, leading to uncertainty about DBP contamination in the area. This study explores the formation potential of 35 typical DBPs, including 6 trihalomethanes (THMs), 9 haloacetic acids (HAAs), 2 halogenated ketones (HKs), 9 nitrosamines (NAs), and 9 aromatic DBPs, during chlorination and chloramination of typical source water samples in the Tibet Plateau of China. Moreover, in order to further investigate the characteristics of the generation of DBPs, the molecular composition of DOM in the collected water samples was characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. The findings reveal that, for chlorination and chloramination, the average concentration of the five classes of DBPs was ranked as follows (chlorination, chloramination): HAAs (268.1 µg/L, 54.2 µg/L) > THMs (44.0 µg/L, 2.0 µg/L) > HKs (0.7 µg/L, 1.8 µg/L) > NAs (26.5 ng/L, 74.6 ng/L) > Aromatics (20.4 ng/L, 19.5 ng/L). The dominant compounds in THMs, HAAs, and NAs are trichloromethane, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and nitrosopyrrolidine, respectively. This study highlights a significant positive correlation between DBP generation and UV254, SUV254, and the double bond equivalents of DOM in the source water. It systematically elucidates DOM molecular composition characteristics and DBP formation potential in high-altitude water sources, shedding light on key factors influencing DBP generation at the molecular level in high-altitude areas.
