RESUMO

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face challenges in early social communication skills, prompting the need for a detailed exploration of specific behaviors and their impact on cognitive and adaptive functioning. This study aims to address this gap by examining the developmental trajectories of early social communication skills in preschoolers with ASD aged 18-60 months, comparing them to age-matched typically developing (TD) children. Utilizing the early social communication scales (ESCS), the research employs a longitudinal design to capture changes over time. We apply a principal component analysis (PCA) to ESCS variables to identify underlying components, and cluster analysis to identify subgroups based on preverbal communication profiles. The results reveal consistent differences in early social communication skills between ASD and TD children, with ASD children exhibiting reduced skills. PCA identifies two components, distinguishing objects-directed behaviors and social interaction-directed behaviors. Cluster analysis identifies three subgroups of autistic children, each displaying specific communication profiles associated with distinct cognitive and adaptive functioning trajectories. In conclusion, this study provides a nuanced understanding of early social communication development in ASD, emphasizing the importance of low-level behaviors. The identification of subgroups and their unique trajectories contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of ASD heterogeneity. These findings underscore the significance of early diagnosis, focusing on specific behaviors predicting cognitive and adaptive functioning outcomes. The study encourages further research to explore the sequential development of these skills, offering valuable insights for interventions and support strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Rett syndrome (RTT) is characterized by neurological regression. This pioneering study investigated the effect of age on brain volume reduction by analyzing magnetic resonance imaging findings in participants with RTT, ranging from toddlers to adults. METHODS: Functional evaluation and neuroimaging were performed. All scans were acquired using a Siemens Tim Trio 3 T scanner with a 32-channel head coil. RESULTS: The total intracranial volume and cerebral white matter volume significantly increased with age in the control group compared with that in the RTT group (p < 0.05). Cortical gray matter volume reduction in the RTT group continued to increase in bilateral parietal lobes and left occipital lobes (p < 0.05). The differences in cortical gray matter volume between typically developing brain and RTT-affected brain may tend to continuously increase until adulthood in both temporal lobes although not significant after correction for multiple comparison. CONCLUSIONS: A significant reduction in brain volume was observed in the RTT group. Cortical gray matter volume in the RTT group continued to reduce in bilateral parietal lobes and left occipital lobes. These results provide a baseline for future studies on the effect of RTT treatment and related neuroscience research.

BACKGROUND: Data-driven classification of long-term psychotic symptom trajectories and identification of associated risk factors could assist treatment planning and improve long-term outcomes in psychosis. However, few studies have used this approach, and knowledge about underlying mechanisms is limited. Here, we identify long-term psychotic symptom trajectories and investigate the role of illness-concurrent cannabis and stimulant use. METHODS: 192 participants with first-episode psychosis were followed up after 10 years. Psychotic symptom trajectories were estimated using growth mixture modeling and tested for associations with baseline characteristics and cannabis and stimulant use during the follow-up (FU) period. RESULTS: Four trajectories emerged: (1) Stable Psychotic Remission (54.2 %), (2) Delayed Psychotic Remission (15.6 %), (3) Psychotic Relapse (7.8 %), (4) Persistent Psychotic Symptoms (22.4 %). At baseline, all unfavorable trajectories (2-4) were characterized by more schizophrenia diagnoses, higher symptom severity, and longer duration of untreated psychosis. Compared to the Stable Psychotic Remission trajectory, unstable trajectories (2,3) showed distinct associations with cannabis/stimulant use during the FU-period, with dose-dependent effects for cannabis but not stimulants (Delayed Psychotic Remission: higher rates of frequent cannabis and stimulant use during the first 5 FU-years; Psychotic Relapse: higher rates of sporadic stimulant use throughout the entire FU-period). The Persistent Psychosis trajectory was less clearly linked to substance use during the FU-period. CONCLUSIONS: The risk for an adverse long-term course could be mitigated by treatment of substance use, where particular attention should be devoted to preventing the use of stimulants while the use reduction of cannabis may already yield positive effects.

BACKGROUND: Individuals' vaccine attitudes and practices are not static, but instead are shaped and iteratively revised based on new information and experiences. Understanding shifts over the life course could inform novel approaches and indicate opportune points for communicating vaccine information, but little is known about individuals' vaccination biographies, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: To explore vaccination biographies in a setting marked by high proportions of vaccine hesitancy and recent large-scale vaccination discourses, we conducted and biographically analyzed n = 29 narrative in-depth interviews with caregivers of small children in the Philippines. RESULTS: Our results outline how the perceived relevance of vaccination and an individual's own attitudes and practices repeatedly changed over the course of their life. While respondents narrated vague memories of early vaccine encounters in their families, at schools, or during vaccination campaigns, vaccine relevance accelerated drastically during respondents' or their partner's first perinatal period. Over the following life phase as caregivers, respondents described iterative shifts in their vaccine stance (based on their own experiences, broader discourses, or changing contexts) until their youngest child 'graduated' from immunization. Respondents' later adulthood and old age were commonly marked by little engagement with immunization (except for the COVID-19 vaccines), until the birth of grandchildren sparked renewed motivation to guide younger generations (whether for or against vaccination). CONCLUSIONS: The relevance of vaccination and associated attitudes or practices repeatedly change over the life course. Vaccine promotion efforts could incorporate these biographical dynamics to align with respondents' informational needs, for example by increased engagement in first perinatal periods, eye-level communication at later phases to acknowledge caregivers' increased sense of expertise, and encouragement of vaccine confident grandparents to engage in younger generations' vaccination decisions. Future research should explore transgenerational vaccine trajectories and the potential of biographically targeted promotion efforts.

Roads play a crucial role in urban transportation by facilitating the movement of materials within a city. The condition of road surfaces, such as damage and road facilities, directly affects traffic flow and influences decisions related to urban transportation maintenance and planning. To gather this information, we propose the Detecting and Clustering Framework for sensing road surface conditions based on crowd-sourced trajectories, utilizing various sensors (GPS, orientation sensors, and accelerometers) found in smartphones. Initially, smartphones are placed randomly during users' travels on the road to record the road surface conditions. Then, spatial transformations are applied to the accelerometer data based on attitude readings, and heading angles are computed to store movement information. Next, the feature encoding process operates on spatially adjusted accelerations using the wavelet scattering transformation. The resulting encoding results are then input into the designed LSTM neural network to extract bump features of the road surface (BFRSs). Finally, the BFRSs are represented and integrated using the proposed two-stage clustering method, considering distances and directions. Additionally, this procedure is also applied to crowd-sourced trajectories, and the road surface condition is computed and visualized on a map. Moreover, this method can provide valuable insights for urban road maintenance and planning, with significant practical applications.

BACKGROUND: Both late-life depression and childhood maltreatment have become major global public health issues, given their prevalence and social-economic and health consequences. However, previous studies have solely focused on the relationship of childhood maltreatment to average levels of depressive symptoms. The current study addresses this gap of knowledge by simultaneously examining the impacts of childhood intra- and extra-familial maltreatment on age trajectories of depressive symptoms in later life in the Chinese context. METHODS: Hierarchical linear models were applied to data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018, N = 12,669 individuals aged 45 to 80, comprising N = 43,348 person-years). Depressive symptoms were measured by the CES-D-10 scale. Childhood intra-familial maltreatments were measured by physical abuse and emotional neglect, while extra-familial maltreatment was measured by peer bullying. All analyses were conducted separately by gender in Stata 16. RESULTS: Childhood extrafamilial peer bullying (ß = 1.628, p < 0.001), and intrafamilial physical abuse (ß = 0.746, p < 0.001) and emotional neglect (ß = 0.880, p < 0.001) were associated with higher later-life depressive symptoms levels in the whole sample. Peer bullying differences in depressive symptoms widened with age for both men and women. Physical abuse differences in depressive symptoms remained stable over the life course among men but increased among women. Emotional neglect differences in depressive symptoms decreased with age among men, while it increased first and then decreased among women. CONCLUSIONS: Findings in this study suggest that childhood maltreatment is not only associated with later-life poorer mental health but contributes to increasing inequalities in mental health as people age, especially among peer-bullying victims and women.

Psychotic disorders can be severely enabling, and functional recovery is often difficult to achieve. Admission to a psychiatric unit represents a key opportunity to implement strategies that will improve functional outcomes. In the current literature, there is a lack of consensus on which factors influence functional recovery. Therefore, the present longitudinal cohort study aimed to identify factors associated with functional trajectories following hospital admission for acute psychosis. A sample of 453 individuals with acute psychosis was extracted from the Signature Biobank database. Participants were followed for up to a year following admission. Various clinical indicators were documented over time. Functional trajectories were calculated based on the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. Three groups were identified: "improving", "stable", and "worsening" function. Individuals with a more severe symptomatic presentation at baseline were found to have better functional improve more over time. Over time, individuals in the "improving" and "stable" groups had significant improvements in their psychiatric symptoms. Finally, individuals following a "worsening" functional trajectory initially improved in terms of psychotic symptoms, but it did not persist over time. These results highlight the importance of studying function as a key component of recovery rather than solely focusing on relapse prevention.

Introduction: People with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often show reduced anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) before voluntary steps, impacting their stability. The specific subphase within the APA stage contributing significantly to fall risk remains unclear. Methods: We analyzed center of pressure (CoP) trajectory parameters, including duration, length, and velocity, throughout gait initiation. This examination encompassed both the postural phase, referred to as anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) (APA1, APA2a, APA2b), and the subsequent locomotor phases (LOC). Participants were instructed to initiate a step and then stop (initiating a single step). Furthermore, we conducted assessments of clinical disease severity using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and evaluated fall risk using Tinetti gait and balance scores during off-medication periods. Results: Freezing of gait (FOG) was observed in 18 out of 110 participants during the measurement of CoP trajectories. The Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm successfully identified CoP displacement trajectories in 105 participants (95.5%), while the remaining 5 cases could not be identified due to FOG. Tinetti balance and gait score showed significant associations with levodopa equivalent daily dose, UPDRS total score, disease duration, duration (s) in APA2a (s) and LOC (s), length in APA1 (cm) and APA2b (cm), mediolateral velocity in APA1 (X) (cm/s), APA2a (X) (cm/s), APA2b (X) (cm/s) and LOC (X) (cm/s), and anterior-posterior velocity in APA2a (Z) (cm/s) and APA2b (Z) (cm/s). Multiple linear regression revealed that only duration (s) in APA2a and UPDRS total score was independently associated with Tinetti gait and balance score. Further mediation analysis showed that the duration (s) in APA2a served as a mediator between UPDRS total score and Tinetti balance and gait score (Sobel test, p = 0.047). Conclusion: APA2 subphase duration mediates the link between disease severity and fall risk in PD, suggesting that longer APA2a duration may indicate reduced control during gait initiation, thereby increasing fall risk.

In context with the scientific evidence of aerosol deposition induced snow and glacier melt, this paper provides baseline information about the spatiotemporal variability of aerosols and snow-ice chemistry filling the data and knowledge gap over the western Himalaya, India based on recently published paper [1]. A systematic approach was employed that entailed analysis of aerosol variability over four decades using MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications) data over five major mountain ranges in the western Himalaya. Further, data about nine physicochemical parameters was generated over three selected glaciers in the study area. HYSPLIT (HYbrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model simulated air mass sources at weekly intervals. This dataset is valuable for future investigations aimed at understanding and characterizing the impacts of light-absorbing impurities on radiative forcing, albedo changes, snow-melt, glacier recession and water quality in the western Himalaya.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of cognitive change and modifiable factors for cognitive decline versus stable cognitive trajectories have rarely been described in lower-educated older adults. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify long-term trajectories of cognitive functioning and possible factors associated with cognitive decline. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from 1,042 adults aged ≥ 60 participating in the Health, Welfare and Aging Study (SABE), São Paulo, Brazil, without cognitive impairment at baseline. Data were collected across four waves (2000-2015). Group-based trajectory modelling was used to identify cognitive trajectories. Associations with socioeconomic variables, childhood background, lifestyle, and cardiovascular risk factors were explored using weighted multinomial logistic regressions. MEASUREMENTS: The abbreviated Mini-Mental State Examination was used to measure cognition. RESULTS: Three cognitive trajectories were identified: stable (n= 754, 68.6%), mild-decline (n= 183, 20.8%), and strong-decline (n= 105, 10.7%). At baseline, respondents in the strong-decline group were more likely to be older than those with stable and mild-decline trajectories. Furthermore, participants in both the mild and strong-decline groups were more likely to have no schooling, be divorced/separated, receive less than 4 monthly wages, and be underweight (BMI < 18.5) compared to the stable group. Finally, the mild-decline group was more likely to have lived in rural areas during childhood than participants located in a stable trajectory. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that interventions to reduce cognitive decline for low-educated older adults might include strategies addressing inequalities and improving modifiable risk factor burden.

We investigated the development of professional commitment over time and its relation to work experiences of novice nurses. We used a longitudinal mixed-method approach based on weekly reported quantitative commitment scores and qualitative descriptions of experiences. Specifically, we examined turning points in commitment trajectories and analyzed qualitative characteristics of the turning point. To determine a turning point, we firstly computed a smoothed trajectory for each individual and defined each point beyond the 95% interval of this smoothed trajectory as exceptional. Secondly, we explored whether the commitment development changed after an exceptional point with regard to the slope-valence or commitment strength. The sample consisted of 18 novice nurses. Two third of them revealed at least one turning point, thus the professional commitment development of novice nurses was characterized by peaks and dips that were followed by changes in the commitment development. The analysis showed that turning points followed by positive commitment development typically were characterized by positive experiences. These experiences often concerned relatedness or competence. Turning points followed by a negative development were not consistent: they could be positive, negative, or ambiguous experiences. Many of the negative experiences concerned negative organizational issues. We concluded that there is not a simple relation between commitment development and positive or negative characteristics of an experience. The context and underlying meaning of the experiences should be taken into account to interpret the commitment changes.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the early life risk factors of adult CRS, and the history of asthma and allergies across the life course, is limited. AIM: To investigate relationships between respiratory infective/allergic conditions in childhood, and asthma and allergies across the life course and CRS in middle age. METHODS: Data were from the population-based Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (TAHS) cohort, first studied in 1968 when aged 6-7 years (n = 8583) and serially followed into middle age (n = 3609). Using a well-accepted epidemiological definition, participants were assigned a CRS-severity subtype at age 53: no sinusitis/CRS (reference); past doctor diagnosis only; current symptoms without doctor diagnosis; and doctor-diagnosed CRS with current symptoms. Relationships with infective/allergic respiratory illnesses at age 7, and previously published asthma-allergy trajectories from 7 to 53 years, were examined using multinominal regression. RESULTS: In middle age, 5.8% reported current CRS symptoms with 2.5% doctor-diagnosed. Childhood conditions associated with symptomatic doctor-diagnosed CRS included frequent head colds (multinomial odds ratio [mOR] = 2.04 (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.24, 3.37)), frequent tonsillitis (mOR = 1.61 [95% CI: 1.00, 2.59]) and current childhood asthma (mOR = 2.23 [95% CI: 1.25, 3.98]). Life course trajectories that featured late-onset or persistent asthma and allergies were associated with all CRS subtypes in middle age; early-onset persistent asthma and allergies (mOR = 6.74, 95% CI: 2.76, 16.4); late-onset asthma allergies (mOR = 15.9, 95% CI: 8.06, 31.4), and late-onset hayfever (mOR = 3.02, 95% CI: 1.51, 6.06) were associated with symptomatic doctor-diagnosed CRS. CONCLUSION: Current asthma, frequent head colds and tonsillitis at age 7 could signal a susceptible child who is at higher risk for CRS in mid-adult life and who might benefit from closer monitoring and/or proactive management. Concurrent asthma and allergies were strongly associated and are potential treatable traits of adult CRS.

PURPOSE: In the context of developmental trajectories, the association between adaptive functioning and core autism symptomatology remains unclear. The current study examines the associations of adaptive behavior with autism symptom sub-domains and with different facets of symptom expression. METHODS: Participants include 36 children with a recent diagnosis of autism (33 males; mean age = 56.4 months; SD = 9 months). Families were recruited in the context of the Pediatric Autism Research Cohort (PARC) project. Parents filled out questionnaires at two time points, six months apart, regarding their child's autism symptoms and adaptive functioning. The longitudinal relationship between adaptive functioning and autism symptoms was investigated using Mixed Linear Model analyses: one assessing the relationship between general symptom levels and adaptive functioning, and another examining the associations between symptom frequency and impact with adaptive functioning. We conducted Pearson correlation tests at both time points to assess the associations between symptom sub-domains and adaptive functioning. RESULTS: Findings showed that higher autism symptoms associated with lower adaptive behavior skills, and that this association remained stable over time. Autism impact scores did not significantly relate to adaptive skills, as opposed to frequency scores. Associations between adaptive functioning and autism symptom sub-domains strengthened over time. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that adaptive functioning is associated with parent-report autism symptomatology, and that this association changes and, on average, becomes stronger over time. Findings may indicate that frequency and impact of symptoms have differential roles in the development of adaptive skills and are worthy of further exploration.

Despite numerous studies have explored the association between sleep duration and cognition, the link between sleep duration trajectories and cognition remains underexplored. This systematic review aims to elucidate this correlation. We analyzed 55 studies from 14 countries, comprising 36 studies focusing on sleep duration, 20 on insomnia, and 13 on hypersomnia. A total of 10,767,085 participants were included in 49 cohort studies with a mean follow-up duration of 9.1 years. A non-linear association between sleep duration and cognitive decline was identified. Both long (risk ratio (RR):1.35, 95% confidence intervals (CIs):1.23-1.48) and short sleep durations (RR: 1.12, 95% CIs:1.03-1.22) were associated with an elevated risk of cognitive decline compared to moderate sleep duration. Additionally, hypersomnia (RR:1.26, 95% CIs: 1.15-1.39) and insomnia (RR: 1.16, 95% CIs: 1.002-1.34) were also linked to an increased risk. Moreover, prolonged sleep duration posed a higher risk of cognitive decline than stable sleep duration (RR:1.42, 95% CIs:1.27-1.59). Importantly, transitioning from short or moderate to long sleep duration, as well as persistent long sleep duration, exhibited higher RRs for cognitive decline (RRs: 1.94, 1.40, and 1.28, respectively) compared to persistent moderate sleep duration. Our findings underscore the significance of prolonged sleep duration, alongside short and long sleep durations, with an elevated risk of cognitive decline. The association is tied to the degree of sleep duration changes. Our study highlights the importance of considering changes in sleep patterns over time, not just static sleep durations.

Maternal experience of child maltreatment (CM) has been associated with maternal and child mental health. However, evidence about the course of child mental health and maternal CM is scarce. Therefore, this study aims to compare trajectories of mental health in children according to maternal CM exposure and maternal mental health. We included 327 mothers and their singleton child from the Ulm SPATZ Health Study, a prospective birth cohort study. Child mental health was determined by the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) at the age of 4, 5, 6, and 7 years and maternal CM by the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Results display that maternal CM is associated with more behavioural and emotional difficulties in children, a trend that tends to increase with older child age. The sum of maternal mental health problems across this time course mediates this association. Male child sex is associated with more mental health problems in the child and the mother. These results provide an important first insight into the relevance of maternal CM on the trajectories of mental health in the offspring and highlight the importance of chronicity and severity of maternal mental health. Further prospective research in cohorts with longer follow-ups up into adolescence and adulthood is needed.

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes are carriers of tropical diseases, thus demanding a comprehensive understanding of their behaviour to devise effective disease control strategies. In this article we show that machine learning can provide a performance assessment of 2D and 3D machine vision techniques and thereby guide entomologists towards appropriate experimental approaches for behaviour assessment. Behaviours are best characterised via tracking-giving a full time series of information. However, tracking systems vary in complexity. Single-camera imaging yields two-component position data which generally are a function of all three orthogonal components due to perspective; however, a telecentric imaging setup gives constant magnification with respect to depth and thereby measures two orthogonal position components. Multi-camera or holographic techniques quantify all three components. METHODS: In this study a 3D mosquito mating swarm dataset was used to generate equivalent 2D data via telecentric imaging and a single camera at various imaging distances. The performance of the tracking systems was assessed through an established machine learning classifier that differentiates male and non-male mosquito tracks. SHAPs analysis has been used to explore the trajectory feature values for each model. RESULTS: The results reveal that both telecentric and single-camera models, when placed at large distances from the flying mosquitoes, can produce equivalent accuracy from a classifier as well as preserve characteristic features without resorting to more complex 3D tracking techniques. CONCLUSIONS: Caution should be exercised when employing a single camera at short distances as classifier balanced accuracy is reduced compared to that from 3D or telecentric imaging; the trajectory features also deviate compared to those from the other datasets. It is postulated that measurement of two orthogonal motion components is necessary to optimise the accuracy of machine learning classifiers based on trajectory data. The study increases the evidence base for using machine learning to determine behaviours from insect trajectory data.

Keratan sulfate (KS) is a proteoglycan secreted in the fetal brain astrocytes and radial glia into extracellular parenchyma as granulofilamentous deposits. KS surrounds neurons except dendritic spines, repelling glutamatergic and facilitating GABAergic axons. The same genes are expressed in both neuroblast migration and axonal growth. This study examines timing of KS during morphogenesis of some normally developing human fetal forebrain structures. Twenty normal human fetal brains from 9-41 weeks gestational age were studied at autopsy. KS was examined by immunoreactivity in formalin-fixed paraffin sections, plus other markers including synaptophysin, S-100ß protein, vimentin and nestin. Radial and tangential neuroblast migratory pathways from subventricular zone to cortical plate were marked by KS deposits as early as 9wk GA, shortly after neuroblast migration initiated. During later gestation this reactivity gradually diminished and disappeared by term. Long axonal fascicles of the internal capsule and short fascicles of intrinsic bundles of globus pallidus and corpus striatum also appeared as early as 9-12wk, as fascicular sleeves before axons even entered. Intense KS occurs in astrocytic cytoplasm and extracellular parenchyma at 9wk in globus pallidus, 15wk thalamus, 18wk corpus striatum, 22wk cortical plate, and hippocampus postnatally. Corpus callosum and anterior commissure do not exhibit KS at any age. Optic chiasm shows reactivity at the periphery but not around intrinsic subfasciculi. We postulate that KS forms a chemical template for many long and short axonal fascicles before axons enter and neuroblast migratory pathways at initiation of migration. Cross-immunoreactivity with aggrecan may render difficult molecular distinction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the best indicator of mobility decline between dynapenia, low skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI), and sarcopenia defined by the EWGSOP2 using different cutoff points for grip strength. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted with a follow-up of eight years, involving 2,680 individuals aged 60 and older who participated in the ELSA study with a walking speed greater than 0.8 m/s at baseline. Dynapenia was defined using different cutoff points for grip strength. SMMI was defined by the 20th percentile of the entire ELSA sample distribution and sarcopenia was defined based on the EWGSOP2, using different cutoff points for grip strength. Mobility was analysed using the walking speed test. RESULTS: Over time, the greatest decline in walking speed occurred in dynapenic women with grip strength < 17 kg (-0.005 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001) and < 20 kg (-0.007 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001). With regards to sarcopenia, the greatest walking speed decline occurred in women with probable sarcopenia when defined by grip strength < 17 kg [(-0.006 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001) or grip strength < 20 kg (-0.007 m/s per year; 95 % CI: -0.01 to -0.001)]. Dynapenia in men as well as low SMMI and sarcopenia in men and women did not enable identifying the risk of mobility decline. CONCLUSION: Dynapenia and probable sarcopenia defined by grip strength < 17 kg and < 20 kg enabled identifying walking speed decline over time only in women.

Throughout his career, John Schulenberg challenged us to understand adolescent development as the confluence of distal and proximal experiences along with critical transitions. Heeding this call, we examined whether chronic childhood peer victimization predicted adolescents' depressive symptoms via early-emerging depression growth trajectories, continued victimization into adolescence, and stress-amplification at the middle school transition. Self-reported depressive symptoms and teacher-reported and self-reported peer victimization were obtained from 636 youth (338 girls; Mage = 7.96 years, 66.7% White, 21.7% Black, 11.6% other) in the 2nd-9th grades. Latent growth curve analyses revealed that, by 7th grade, chronic childhood peer victimization was associated with depressive symptoms only through an indirect association with peer victimization in adolescence, underscoring how interrelated historical and ongoing interpersonal stressors contribute to adolescent psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in early adolescence has been amply documented. However, there has been little research on the progression of NSSI over time. Most studies have focused on the risk factors for NSSI, with less attention devoted to understanding the role of protective factors. This paper aimed to expand existing knowledge about the development of NSSI, with an emphasis on the impacts of protective factors such as social support and socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: A total of 436 adolescents completed self-report surveys that addressed social support including friend, family, and teacher support, objective and subjective SES, and NSSI at three different points in time for 2 years. RESULTS: Latent growth curve analyses revealed that NSSI increased across early adolescence to mid-adolescence. Support from friends and family negatively predicted adolescents' initial NSSI level. Furthermore, subjective SES negatively predicted the rate of NSSI. CONCLUSIONS: These findings contribute to an understanding of the influences of both social support and SES on NSSI over time. NSSI interventions and education should include considerations of both the value of support from friends and family as well as subjective SES.
