OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the preferred modes of transportation to the hospital among patients with acute stroke and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), as well as to identify the factors that influence the utilization of ambulances. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study, including patients who were diagnosed with acute stroke and AMI, at the people's hospital of Zhongjiang, from September 30th, 2022 to August 30th, 2023. All patients were divided into emergency medical service (EMS)-activation group and self-transportation group. Chi-square and t-tests were utilized to discern differences between groups at baseline. To screen relevant variables, we employed the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression analysis using R package glmnet. Subsequently, we performed a logistic regression analysis to identify predictors of EMS activation according the results of LASSO regression. RESULTS: we collected 929 valid questionnaires. 26.16% of the patients required the services of EMS. 90.9% of individuals have not received any formal first aid education. 42.1% of them reported that they had no understanding of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Diagnosed as AMI (OR 0.22, 95%CI 0.06 to 0.88) or acute cerebral infarction (OR 0.26, 0.10 to 0.68), the distance between the patient and the nearest 120 network hospital when the patient had these symptoms (OR 0.97, 0.94 to 0.99), the patient's son or daughter was there when the patient was symptomatic (OR 0.58, 0.37 to 0.94), the patient (OR 0.19, 0.05 to 0.72) and the patient's partner (wife or husband) (OR 0.36, 0.16 to 0.85) had decided that the patient needed further medical help, Among patients who did not seek immediate help after symptom onset, thinking that the symptoms will disappear spontaneously (OR 0.34, 0.13 to 0.92) or not wanting to disturb others (OR 0.06, 0.01 to 0.66) or believing that they are not important symptoms (OR 0.15, 0.05 to 0.42) were factors independently associated with less ambulance use. Age (OR 1.02, 1.00 to 1.04), Stroke patients have experienced symptoms of disturbance of consciousness or convulsions (OR 2.99, 1.72 to 5.2) were independent factors associated with increased ambulance use. CONCLUSION: There is still ambulance underutilization among patients with acute stroke and AMI in county territory of China. Moreover, it is needed to raise the level of first aid education and awareness about EMS. Additionally, private clinic doctors and the public should gain adequate understanding of the severity of acute stroke and AMI, as well as their common symptoms, the crucial importance of prompt medical intervention. Finally, we propose that all township hospitals should be integrated into the 120 emergency networks and equipped with emergency first aid capabilities, pre-hospital care, and transportation abilities.

The aim of this work is to analyze trends in youth transportation fatalities and injuries in North Carolina (NC), assess the implementation of ignition interlock devices (IIDs) in the United States and abroad, discuss policy implications for IIDs, and highlight health equity considerations related to motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). MVCs cause the highest number of unintentional injury-related deaths for children and teenagers in NC, and policymakers should pay special attention to MVCs related to alcohol consumption. IIDs are effective in reducing collision rates and recidivism for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Ignition interlock device requirements have been increasingly implemented globally over the past three decades. However, the adoption of stricter IID policies after first-time DUI offenses in NC and across the U.S. is a prudent public health measure to enhance transportation safety for both adults and children. Evidence-based interventions such as IIDs must also strive to address inequities in transportation safety, and the framing of proposed policies should reflect the tenets of cultural humility.

Background: Available evidence suggests a link between exposure to transportation noise and an increased risk of obesity. We aimed to assess exposure-response functions for long-term residential exposure to road traffic, railway and aircraft noise, and markers of obesity. Methods: Our cross-sectional study is based on pooled data from 11 Nordic cohorts, including up to 162,639 individuals with either measured (69.2%) or self-reported obesity data. Residential exposure to transportation noise was estimated as a time-weighted average Lden 5 years before recruitment. Adjusted linear and logistic regression models were fitted to assess beta coefficients and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for body mass index, overweight, and obesity, as well as for waist circumference and central obesity. Furthermore, natural splines were fitted to assess the shape of the exposure-response functions. Results: For road traffic noise, the OR for obesity was 1.06 (95% CI = 1.03, 1.08) and for central obesity 1.03 (95% CI = 1.01, 1.05) per 10 dB Lden. Thresholds were observed at around 50-55 and 55-60 dB Lden, respectively, above which there was an approximate 10% risk increase per 10 dB Lden increment for both outcomes. However, linear associations only occurred in participants with measured obesity markers and were strongly influenced by the largest cohort. Similar risk estimates as for road traffic noise were found for railway noise, with no clear thresholds. For aircraft noise, results were uncertain due to the low number of exposed participants. Conclusion: Our results support an association between road traffic and railway noise and obesity.

The transportation of silicon (Si) by rivers to the sea plays a vital role as an external source of Si budget for coastal environments, impacting the carbon cycle in the ocean. Nevertheless, the transport of reactive silica (RSi) from small rivers to the coastal sea has been frequently disregarded in scientific investigations. This research focused on 24 rivers situated along the Bohai Sea (BS) Rim, encompassing small rivers (SR) and the largest river in the region, the Yellow River (YR), to analyze their concentrations and fluxes of dissolved silicate (DSi), biogenic silica (BSi) and other amorphous forms of Si. The findings indicated seasonal variations in DSi concentrations, with higher levels observed during the flood season. Annually, approximately 105 × 103 t DSi and 200 × 103 t BSi were transported to the BS, with SR and YR contributing equally to the total riverine BSi flux. The smaller rivers were found to increase the BSi fraction of RSi due to elevated biological fixation. The ratios of average DSi and BSi fluxes to the river watershed area of SR were 3.5 and 6 times higher, respectively, compared to those of YR. SR play a critical role in the terrestrial Si export in the BS Rim. Human activities have led to significant deviations in the Si ratios to nitrogen and phosphorus in these rivers from the Redfield-Brzezinski ratio. This discrepancy could impact the phytoplankton community, primary production, and the environment of the BS. The study highlights the substantial contribution of SR to coastal environments, particularly in semi-closed marine environments like the BS.

Reducing air pollutants and CO2 emissions from energy utilization is crucial for achieving the dual objectives of clean air and carbon neutrality in China. Thus, an optimized health-oriented strategy is urgently needed. Herein, by coupling a CO2 and air pollutants emission inventory with response surface models for PM2.5-associated mortality, we shed light on the effectiveness of protecting human health and co-CO2 benefit from reducing fuel-related emissions and generate a health-oriented strategy for the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). Results reveal that oil consumption is the primary contributor to fuel-related PM2.5 pollution and premature deaths in the YRD. Significantly, curtailing fuel consumption in transportation is the most effective measure to alleviate the fuel-related PM2.5 health impact, which also has the greatest cobenefits for CO2 emission reduction on a regional scale. Reducing fuel consumption will achieve substantial health improvements especially in eastern YRD, with nonroad vehicle emission reductions being particularly impactful for health protection, while on-road vehicles present the greatest potential for CO2 reductions. Scenario analysis confirms the importance of mitigating oil consumption in the transportation sector in addressing PM2.5 pollution and climate change.

Plant natural products (PNPs) exhibit a wide range of biological activities and have essential applications in various fields such as medicine, agriculture, and flavors. Given their natural limitations, the production of high-value PNPs using microbial cell factories has become an effective alternative in recent years. However, host metabolic burden caused by its massive accumulation has become one of the main challenges for efficient PNP production. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the transmembrane transport process of PNPs. This review introduces the discovery and mining of PNP transporters to directly mediate PNP transmembrane transportation both intracellularly and extracellularly. In addition to transporter engineering, this review also summarizes several auxiliary strategies (such as small molecules, environmental changes, and vesicles assisted transport) for strengthening PNP transportation. Finally, this review is concluded with the applications and future perspectives of transportation engineering in the construction and optimization of PNP microbial cell factories.

Transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in the free movement and rational allocation of resources. Utilizing provincial panel data from China spanning from 2000 to 2017, we employ a dynamic spatial Durbin model (DSDM) and a panel threshold model to analyze the impact of transportation infrastructure on resource misallocation. The findings are as follows: (1) Overall, transportation infrastructure serves to correct misallocations of capital and labor, exhibiting spatial effects; (2) Under the influence of spatial spillover effects, transportation infrastructure improves capital misallocation in neighboring regions, yet exacerbates labor misallocation; (3) The impact of transportation infrastructure on capital and labor misallocations shows regional heterogeneity; (4) Transportation infrastructure indirectly ameliorates resource misallocation through three pathways: opening up to external markets, urbanization, and industrial upgrading; (5) There is a threshold effect of transportation infrastructure on labor misallocation - it only improves labor misallocation when it reaches a certain scale.

Fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are gaining significance due to their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Their efficient fuel cell cycle makes them ideal for last-mile transportation, offering zero emissions and longer range compared to battery electric vehicles. Additionally, the generation of electricity through fuel cell stacks is becoming increasingly popular, providing a clean energy source for various applications. This paper focuses on utilizing the energy from fuel cycle bicycles when it's not in use and feeding it into the home DC grid. To achieve this, a dual-phase DC to DC converter is proposed to boost stack voltage and integrate with the 24 V DC home grid system. The converter design is simulated using the PSIM platform and tested in a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment with real-time simulation capabilities.

Governmental policies, regulations, and responses to the pandemic can benefit from a better understanding of people's resulting behaviours before, during, and after COVID-19. To avoid the inelasticity and subjectivity of survey datasets, several studies have already used some objective variables like air pollutants to estimate the potential impacts of COVID-19 on the urban transportation system. However, the usage of reactant gases and a narrow time scale might weaken the results somehow. Here, both the objective passenger volume of public transport and the concentration of private traffic emitted black carbon (BC) from 2018 to 2023 were collected/calculated to decipher the potential relationship between public and private traffic during the COVID-19 period. Our results indicated that the commuting patterns of citizens show significant (p < 0.01) different patterns before, during, and after the pandemic. To be specific, public transportation showed a significant (p < 0.01) positive correlation with private transportation before the pandemic. This public transportation was significantly (p < 0.01) affected by the outbreaks of COVID-19, showing a significant (p < 0.01) negative correlation with private transportation. Such impacts of the virus and governmental policy would affect the long-term behaviour of individuals and even affect public transportation usage after the pandemic. Our results also indicated that such behaviour was mainly linked to the governmental restriction policy and would soon be neglected after the cancellation of the restriction policy in China.

Background and Objectives: In most western countries, older adults depend on private cars for transportation and do not proactively plan for driving cessation. The objective of this review was to examine current research studies outlining effective interventions and strategies to assist older adults during their transition from driver to driving retirement or cessation. Research Design and Methods: A search was completed across 9 databases using key words and MeSH terms for drivers, cessation of driving, and older adult drivers. Eligibility screening of 9,807 titles and abstracts, followed by a detailed screening of 206 papers, was completed using the Covidence platform. Twelve papers were selected for full-text screen and data extraction, comprising 3 papers with evidence-based intervention programs and 9 papers with evidence-informed strategies. Results: Three papers met the research criteria of a controlled study for programs that support and facilitate driving cessation for older adults. Nine additional studies were exploratory or descriptive, which outlined strategies that could support older drivers, their families, and/or healthcare professionals during this transition. Driving retirement programs/toolkits are also presented. Discussion and Implications: The driver retirement programs had promising results, but there were methodological weaknesses within the studies. Strategies extracted contributed to 6 themes: Reluctance and avoidance of the topic, multiple stakeholder involvement is important, taking proactive approach is critical, refocus the process away from assessment to proactive planning, collaborative approach to enable "ownership" of the decision is needed, and engage in planning alternative transportation should be the end result. Meeting the transportation needs of older adults will be essential to support aging in place, out-of-home mobility, and participation, particularly in developed countries where there is such a high dependency on private motor vehicles.

This work introduces and discusses the impacts of the water bridge on gas adsorption and diffusion behaviors in a shale gas-bearing formation. The density distribution of the water bridge has been analyzed in micropores and meso-slit by molecular dynamics. Na+ and Cl- have been introduced into the system to mimic a practical encroachment environment and compared with pure water to probe the deviation in water bridge distribution. Additionally, practical subsurface scenarios, including pressure and temperature, are examined to reveal the effects on gas adsorption and diffusion properties, determining the shale gas transportation in realistic shale formation. The outcomes suggest carbon dioxide (CO2) usually has higher adsorption than methane (CH4) with a water bridge. Increasing temperature hinders gas adsorption, density distribution decreases in all directions. Increasing pressure facilitates gas adsorption, particularly as a bulk phase in the meso-slit, whereas it restricts gas diffusion by enhancing the interaction strength between gas and shale. Furthermore, ions make the water bridge distributes more unity and shifts to the slit center, impeding gas adsorption onto shale while encouraging gas diffusion. This study provides updated guidelines for gas adsorption and transportation characteristics and supports the fundamental understanding of industrial shale gas exploration and transportation.

Social participation is associated with better health, quality of life, physical activity, and engagement in community living and is thus an emerging health priority. Transportation plays an important role in facilitating social participation. Our team recently reported in the Journal of Disability and Health that Missouri-dwelling adults aging with long-term physical disabilities who use paratransit services as their primary transportation mode are more likely to participate in social roles and activities outside the home compared to those who do not use paratransit. In March of 2023, the paratransit company Metro Call-A-Ride that serves St. Louis announced major scale backs to their coverage zones due in part to staffing shortages. This decision has been met with a formal complaint filed to the U.S. Department of Justice as well as protest from the St. Louis disability community and advocates. Thousands of individuals who relied on Call-A-Ride for their routine community outings-to work, grocery stores, or medical appointments, for example-have been affected by the cuts. In this commentary, we will summarize the media coverage this decision has received, including the perspectives of disability rights advocates and individuals who have been directly affected. We will then present an overview of our original research findings in the context of these recent events and a brief synthesis of existing literature on paratransit services in the U.S. The commentary will end with proposed policy, research, and programming solutions for St. Louis's Metro Call-A-Ride and public transportation at large.

Here, we explored a new manufacturing strategy that uses the mask laser interference additive manufacturing (MLIAM) technique, which combines the respective strengths of laser interference lithography and mask lithography to efficiently fabricate across-scales three-dimensional bionic shark skin structures with superhydrophobicity and adhesive reduction. The phenomena and mechanisms of the MLIAM curing process were revealed and analyzed, showing the feasibility and flexibility. In terms of structural performance, the adhesive force on the surface can be tuned based on the growth direction of the bionic shark skin structures, where the maximum rate of the adhesive reduction reaches about 65%. Furthermore, the evolution of the directional diffusion for the water droplet, which is based on the change of the contact angle, was clearly observed, and the mechanism was also discussed by the models. Moreover, no-loss transportations were achieved successfully using the gradient adhesive force and superhydrophobicity on the surface by tuning the growth direction and modifying by fluorinated silane. Finally, this work gives a strategy for fabricating across-scale structures on micro- and nanometers, which have potential application in bioengineering, diversional targeting, and condenser surface.

INTRODUCTION: Transportation barriers can affect travel needs and quality of life. METHODS: This survey examined transportation, routine activities, and unmet travel needs among older Vietnamese immigrants, focusing on gender differences. RESULTS: Women were more likely to ride with others, less likely to drive, had fewer types of routine activities, and went out for activities less than men. Over 1/4 of the sample had at least one unmet travel need in the previous month (the most common was for visiting family and friends). DISCUSSION: Interventions to enhance mobility should address age- and gender-based transportation differences and assess for unmet travel needs.

Cilia are hair-like organelles present on cell surfaces. They often exhibit a collective wave-like motion that can enhance fluid or particle transportation function, known as metachronal motion. Inspired by nature, researchers have developed artificial cilia capable of inducing metachronal motion, especially magnetic actuation. However, current methods remain intricate, requiring either control of the magnetic or geometrical properties of individual cilia or the generation of a complex magnetic field. In this paper, we present a novel elegant method that eliminates these complexities and induces metachronal motion of arrays of identical microscopic magnetic artificial cilia by applying a simple rotating uniform magnetic field. The key idea of our method is to place arrays of cilia on surfaces with a specially designed curvature. This results in consecutive cilia experiencing different magnetic field directions at each point in time, inducing a phase lag in their motion, thereby causing collective wave-like motion. Moreover, by tuning the surface curvature profile, we can achieve diverse metachronal patterns analogous to symplectic and antiplectic metachronal motion observed in nature, and we can even devise novel combinations thereof. Furthermore, we characterize the local flow patterns generated by the motion of the cilia, revealing the formation of vortical patterns. Our novel approach simplifies the realization of miniaturized metachronal motion in microfluidic systems and opens the possibility of controlling flow pattern generation and transportation, opening avenues for applications such as lab-on-a-chip technologies, organ-on-a-chip platforms, and microscopic object propulsion.

INTRODUCTION: The quality and promptness of prehospital care for major trauma patients are vital in order to lower their high mortality rate. However, the effectiveness of this response in Portugal is unknown. The objective of this study was to analyze response times and interventions for major trauma patients in the central region of Portugal. METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive study, using the 2022 clinical records of the National Institute of Medical Emergency's differentiated resources. Cases of death prior to arrival at the hospital and other non-transport situations were excluded. Five-time intervals were determined, among which are the response time (T1, between activation and arrival at the scene), on-scene time (T2), and transportation time (T5; between the decision to transport and arrival at the emergency service). For each ambulance type, averages and dispersion times were calculated, as well as the proportion of cases in which the nationally and internationally recommended times were met. The frequency of recording six key interventions was also assessed. RESULTS: Of the 3366 records, 602 were eliminated (384 due to death), resulting in 2764 cases: nurse-technician ambulance (SIV) = 36.0%, physician- nurse ambulance (VMER) = 62.2% and physician-nurse helicopter = 1.8%. In a very large number of records, it was not possible to determine prehospital care times: for example, transport time (T5) could be determined in only 29%, 13% and 8% of cases, respectively for SIV, VMER and helicopter. The recommended time for stabilization (T2 ≤ 20 min) was met in 19.8% (SIV), 36.5% (VMER) and 18.2% (helicopter). Time to hospital (T5 ≤ 45 min) was achieved in 80.0% (SIV), 93.1% (VMER) and 75.0% (helicopter) of the records. The administration of analgesia (42% in SIV) and measures to prevent hypothermia (23.5% in SIV) were the most recorded interventions. CONCLUSION: There was substantial missing data on statuses and a lack of information in the records, especially in the VMER and helicopter. According to the records, the time taken to stabilize the victim on-scene often exceeded the recommendations, while the time taken to transport them to the hospital tended to be within the recommendations.


Introdução: A qualidade e rapidez do socorro pré-hospitalar à pessoa vítima de trauma major é vital para diminuir a sua elevada mortalidade. Contudo, desconhece-se a efetividade desta resposta em Portugal. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os tempos de resposta e as intervenções realizadas às vítimas de trauma major na região centro de Portugal. Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo, descritivo, utilizando os registos clínicos de 2022 dos meios diferenciados do Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica. Casos de óbito pré-chegada ao hospital e outras situações de não transporte foram excluídos. Determinaram-se cinco tempos, entre os quais o tempo de resposta (T1, decorrente entre acionamento e chegada ao local), o tempo no local (T2) e o tempo de transporte (T5, intervalo entre a decisão de transporte e a chegada ao serviço de urgência). Foram calculadas médias e medidas de dispersão para cada meio, bem como a proporção de casos em que foram cumpridos os tempos recomendados nacional e internacionalmente. Avaliou-se também a frequência de registo de seis intervenções chave. Resultados: Dos 3366 registos, eliminaram-se 602 (384 por óbito), resultando em 2764 casos [suporte imediato de vida (SIV) = 36,0%, viaturas médicas de emergência e reanimação (VMER) = 62,2%, helicóptero de emergência médica (HEM) = 1,8%]. Num elevado número de registos não foi possível determinar tempos de socorro: por exemplo, o tempo de transporte (T5) foi determinável em apenas 29%, 13%, e 8% dos casos, respetivamente para SIV, VMER e HEM. O tempo recomendado para a estabilização (T2 ≤ 20 min), foi cumprido em 19,8% (SIV), 36,5% (VMER), e 18,2% (HEM) dos regis- tos. Já o tempo de transporte (T5 ≤ 45 min) foi cumprido em 80,0% (SIV), 93,1% (VMER) e 75,0% (HEM) dos registos (avaliáveis). A administração de analgesia (42% na SIV) e as medidas de prevenção de hipotermia (23,5% na SIV) foram as intervenções mais registadas. Conclusão: Observaram-se muitos status omissos e falta de informação nos registos, sobretudo na VMER e HEM. De acordo com os registos, o tempo no local superou frequentemente as recomendações, enquanto o tempo de transporte tende a estar dentro das normas.

Objective: Evaluating the canal-centering and apical transportation ability of endodontic file systems working with different kinematics but of similar cross section. Materials and Methods: Sixty human maxillary first molar mesiobuccal (MB) roots were assigned to three experimental groups based on instrumentation techniques: Reciproc Blue (RB), Mtwo (M2), and OneShape (OS). Pre- and post-instrumentation micro-computed tomographic analysis was performed. Centering ability and apical transportation were analyzed at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm short of the apex. Statistical analysis was conducted using Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: OS showed better canal-centering ability than RB and M2 at 3 mm, 6 mm, and 9 mm. No significant difference among the tested groups was observed during the assessment of apical transportation (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The systems evaluated safely prepared curved MB canals with minimal canal transportation. OS showed superior canal-centering ability compared to the other two groups.

OBJECTIVE: The visual guiding system, as a tunnel traffic safety improvement method by using visual guiding facilities to actively guide driving safely, has been widely used in countries with many tunnels, in recent years. This paper aims to quantitatively study the comprehensive evaluation of traffic safety of the visual guiding system in tunnels, which has certain engineering application value and can provide support for the quantitative evaluation and optimal design of tunnel traffic safety. METHODS: Based on the analysis of the relevant factors of urban tunnel traffic safety, a multi-factor comprehensive evaluation system with 5 upper-level indicators and 12 basic-level indicators was proposed. Considering the independent and incompatible indicators, a comprehensive evaluation method of traffic safety of the visual guiding system in urban tunnels was constructed by using the extension matter-element model. Taking the scene of 4 types of tunnel curves, such as no facilities, horizontal stripe, chevron alignment sign, and LED arch, as examples, the comprehensive evaluation of various schemes were carried out by using simulation tests. RESULTS: The traffic safety comprehensive evaluation system of visual guiding system in urban tunnels can be analyzed from five aspects: perception reaction, guidance ability, driver factor, driving task, and facility appearance. The results demonstrated significant the comprehensive evaluation result of the target level of scene 1 was L4, scene 2 was L3, scene 3 was L2, and scene 4 was L1. That is, the final results of the comprehensive evaluation of the four scenes were poor, medium, good, and very good, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In the scheme of visual guiding system for urban tunnel curves, the effectiveness of the three types of designs, from high to low, was the LED arch, chevron alignment sign, and horizontal stripe, and the safety of the scene without facilities was the lowest. Hence, setting the LED arch in the urban tunnel curve has a good effect in the aspects of guidance ability, sight distance, and sight zone, and is conducive to the driver's perception reaction and driving task.

BACKGROUND: While long-term air pollution and noise exposure has been linked to increasing cardiometabolic disease risk, potential effects on body composition remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of long-term air pollution, noise and body composition. METHODS: We used repeated data from the LEAD (Lung, hEart, sociAl, boDy) study conducted in Vienna, Austria. Body mass index (BMI; kg/m2), fat mass index (FMI; z-score), and lean mass index (LMI; z-score) were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the first (t0; 2011-ongoing) and second (t1; 2017-ongoing) examinations. Annual particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations were estimated with the GRAMM/GRAL model (2015-2021). Day-evening-night (Lden) and night-time (Lnight) noise levels from transportation were modeled for 2017 following the European Union Directive 2002/49/EC. Exposures were assigned to residential addresses. We performed analyses separately in children/adolescents and adults, using linear mixed-effects models with random participant intercepts and linear regression models for cross-sectional and longitudinal associations, respectively. Models were adjusted for co-exposure, lifestyle and sociodemographics. RESULTS: A total of 19,202 observations (nt0 = 12,717, nt1 = 6,485) from participants aged 6-86 years (mean age at t0 = 41.0 years; 52.9 % female; mean PM10 = 21 µg/m3; mean follow-up time = 4.1 years) were analyzed. Among children and adolescents (age ≤ 18 years at first visit), higher PM10exposure was cross-sectionally associated with higher FMI z-scores (0.09 [95 % Confidence Interval (CI): 0.03, 0.16]) and lower LMI z-scores (-0.05 [95 % CI: -0.10, -0.002]) per 1.8 µg/m3. Adults showed similar trends in cross-sectional associations as children, though not reaching statistical significance. We observed no associations for noise exposures. Longitudinal analyses on body composition changes over time yielded positive associations for PM10, but not for other exposures. CONCLUSION: Air pollution exposure, mainly PM10, was cross-sectionally and longitudinally associated with body composition in children/adolescents and adults. Railway/road-traffic noise exposures showed no associations in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

Horses are regularly transported in the United States (U.S.); however, how, and why horses travel by road has not been explored. Consequently, an online nationwide survey was conducted to understand 1) the most common reasons for travel; 2) the types of journeys undertaken when being transported by road in the U.S. and 3) the general management practices when transporting for 3 h or less. Responses were collected from 1294 participants with at least one response from every state in the continental U.S. The most common survey taker was a female (93.9 %), adult amateur (81.2 %), horse owner (64.6 %) who rode recreationally (33.1 %) and transported their own horse (79.4 %). The most common reasons for travel were for trail or leisure riding (34.2 %) followed by showing and competition (25.3 %); however, this varied by discipline. The most common trip duration was less than one hour (46.8 %), with only 12.4 % of the most common trip durations being 4 h or more. The most common specific horse transported by road for 3 h or less was an adult (age 5-15; 59.0 %), Quarter Horse (21.2 %), used for pleasure or trail riding (44.3 %). The biggest concern when transporting was injury to the horse (26.7 %), whilst the biggest factor when planning to travel was the weather (24.1 %). These results provide insight into why horses are being transported by road in the U.S. and that it is more common to transport horses for shorter durations.
