RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic started at the end of 2019 and can be considered one of the most difficult health crises of the past century. It has had a devastating effect around the world, not only for public health, but also for the economy, labor market, and other facets of individual and societal life. Health systems have been put under high strain, and health professionals have experienced unusual and stressful work circumstances. With the aim of drawing lessons for nursing education, the present study analyzed, during the weeks of peak infection in Spain, the stress experience and coping strategies of a sample of 403 nurses from the Spanish health system. Specifically, we analyzed how tenure, stress appraisal, problem-focused coping, and support-seeking coping predicted nurses' awareness of their education needs, both in terms of technical-professional knowledge and skills and transversal skills. Structural equation modeling analysis revealed that more tenure (years of experience) was related to lower stress appraisal (workload, -0.12, p < 0.05; insufficient preparation, -0.33, p < 0.001; and fear of contagion -0.36, p < 0.001) and more problem focused coping (PFC) strategies were related to higher awareness of professional (0.18, p < 0.01) and transversal educational needs (0.17, p < 0.01) while support seeking strategies just related to transversal training needs (0.10, p < 0.05). Moreover, the participants provided valuable input about specific contents to be considered in future nursing education programs. Implications for redesigning the nursing degree curriculum are analyzed in the discussion section.

PURPOSE: The health information management (HIM) profession lacks clarity around leadership and leadership development. To date, little empirical research exists on this topic, and it is unclear if broader approaches for healthcare leadership are suitable. This paper aims to explore which the leadership styles are relevant to the HIM profession. The findings were also used to inform a discussion on how HIM professionals could develop these leadership styles. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Through a systematic scoping literature review, deductive thematic analysis was undertaken to extrapolate common themes around this style of leadership based on transversal competency domains that reflect twenty-first century skills (i.e. critical thinking and innovation, interpersonal, intrapersonal and global citizenship) (Bernard, Watch and Ryan, 2016; UNESCO, 2015 ). This approach enabled the findings to be discussed from a leadership development perspective. FINDINGS: Analysis of the literature revealed that a relational leadership style through a team-based approach is required. Literature studies on how to develop leadership competencies were not found. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS: Future policy and research implications include the need for research on transversal competencies to determine if they can shape HIM leadership development. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: This leadership style and competencies proposed are relevant across many occupations and may have broader applications for leadership research, education and development. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: This paper defines the style of leadership required in the HIM profession and identifies a succinct set of contemporary competencies to inform the development of this type of leadership.

Introducción: las competencias genéricas son la base común de la profesión, se vinculan con situaciones concretas de la práctica profesional que requieren respuestas complejas. Los programas de estudio deben incluir, dentro de su perfil de egreso, las competencias genéricas que se pretenden desarrollar. Objetivo: elaborar una propuesta de las competencias profesionales genéricas del especialista en Pediatría. Material y Métodos: se trata de una investigación cualitativa esencialmente teórica de producción intelectual heurística por parte de los autores. El procedimiento empleado consistió en la elaboración de una propuesta inicial de competencias genéricas para la especialidad de Pediatría, elaborada por la autora principal (MOG) basándose en su reconocida experiencia en esta especialidad y su conocimiento sobre el enfoque de competencias. Esta propuesta inicial fue sometida posteriormente a varias rondas iterativas de discusión y modificaciones sucesivas por el grupo completo de autores. La propuesta se consideró concluida cuando no surgieron nuevas propuestas de modificación. Dada su naturaleza, este trabajo no incluyó consideraciones éticas vinculadas a interacciones con terceros que requirieran consentimiento informado u otra previsión. Resultados: se obtuvo una propuesta de un conjunto de veinte competencias genéricas para el perfil del egresado de la especialidad de Pediatría.Conclusiones: las competencias profesionales genéricas propuestas para la especialidad de Pediatría comprenden cinco relativas al área de aprendizaje, siete a la de relaciones interpersonales y el trabajo grupal, cinco a la de autonomía y desarrollo personal y tres a la de valores ético-morales(AU)


Introduction: generic competencies are the common base of the profession; they are linked to concrete situations of the professional practice that require complex answers. Curricula must include, as part of their graduate profile, those generic competencies that they intend to develop. Objective: produce a proposal of generic professional competencies for Pediatrics specialists. Material and Methods: this is an essentially theoretical qualitative research of authors´ intellectual heuristic production. The procedure consisted in an initial proposal of generic competencies for Pediatrics specialty made by the main author (MOG) based on her sounded experience in this specialty and her knowledge about the competencies approach. This initial proposal was submitted to several iterative rounds of discussion and successive modifications by the complete set of authors. The proposal was considered complete when no new suggestions for modifications were made. According to its nature, this work did not include ethical considerations linked to third parties interactions that required informed consent or any other prevision. Results: a proposal of a set of twenty generic professional competencies for the graduate profile of Pediatric specialty was obtained. Conclusions: the generic professional competencies proposed for Pediatrics specialty consisted of five connected with the field of learning, seven with that of interpersonal relationships and team work, five with that of autonomy and personal development and three with that of moral and ethical values(AU)

Resumen:


Las competencias transversales serían aquellas que rebasan los límites de una disciplina para desarrollarse potencialmente en todas ellas: habilidades necesarias para ejercer eficazmente cualquier profesión que no se consideran de forma explícita en una asignatura determinada, al menos en Ciencias de la Salud. Así ocurre en Enfermería, en la que por otra parte adquirir dichas competencias incide de una forma sustancial en la formación de profesionales para las demandas de la sociedad y del mercado de trabajo.


Nos planteamos la necesidad de establecer algún tipo de actuación que propicie la adquisición de competencias en este sentido, que no están cubiertas en las materias curriculares, y por ello se propone un programa piloto de formación en competencias básicas para el empleo, integrado por una serie de talleres que podrían ser desarrollados en uno de los dos últimos cursos del Grado en Enfermería.


Abstract:


Transversal competencies are those that exceed the limits of a discipline to develop potential in all of them: skills necessary to effectively exercise any profession that are not considered explicitly in a given subject, at least in Health Sciences. This is true in Nursing, which otherwise acquire such skills in a substantial impact on the training of professionals for the demands of society and labor market. We propose the need of some type of action that encourages the acquisition of skills in this regard, which are not covered in the curriculum materials, and therefore proposes a pilot training program in basic skills for employment and work, composed of a series of workshops that could be developed into one of the last two years of graduate programs in Nursing.


Competências transversales são aqueles que excedem os limites de uma disciplina para desenvolver o potencial em todos eles: habilidades necessárias para efetivamente exercer qualquer profissão que não são considerados explicitamente em um determinado assunto, pelo menos em Ciências da Saúde. Isto é verdade em Enfermagem, que de outra forma adquirir tais conhecimentos em um impacto substancial na formação de profissionais para as demandas da sociedade e do mercado de trabalho. Propomos a necessidade de algum tipo de ação que incentiva a aquisição de competências nesta matéria, que não são abrangidos no material curricular e, portanto, propõe um programa de treinamento de pilotos em competências básicas para o emprego eo trabalho, composto por uma série de workshops, que poderão ser desenvolvidas em um dos dois últimos anos de cursos de graduação em Enfermagem.
