We tested whether thermal tolerance and aerobic performance differed between two populations of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) originating from the same source population six decades after their introduction into two lakes in the Lake Victoria basin in East Africa. We used short-term acclimation of juvenile fish to a range of temperatures from ambient to +6°C, and performed critical thermal maximum (CTmax ) and respirometry tests to measure upper thermal tolerance, resting and maximum metabolic rates, and aerobic scope (AS). Across acclimation temperatures, Nile perch from the cooler lake (Lake Nabugabo, Uganda) tended to have lower thermal tolerance (i.e., CTmax ) and lower aerobic performance (i.e., AS) than Nile perch from the warmer waters of Lake Victoria (Bugonga region, Uganda). Effects of temperature acclimation were more pronounced in the Lake Victoria population, with the Lake Nabugabo fish showing less thermal plasticity in most metabolic traits. Our results suggest phenotypic divergence in thermal tolerance between these two introduced populations in a direction consistent with an adaptive response to local thermal regimes.

BACKGROUND: Synbranchidae or swamp eels are fishes belonging to the order Synbranchiformes that occur in both freshwater and occasionally in brackish. They are worldwide distributed in tropical and subtropical rivers of four different continents. A large degree of chromosomal variation has been found in this family, mainly through the use of conventional cytogenetic investigations. Inside this group, a still almost unexplored species under the cytogenetic point of view is the Asian swamp eel Monopterus albus, a widely distributed species throughout Asia. Here, we tested the hypothesis of chromosomal speciation, where a case of sympatric speciation may occur as the primary consequence of chromosomal rearrangements. We performed a comparative chromosomal analysis of M. albus from 22 different localities in Thailand, using distinct staining methods (C-banding, Ag-NO3, and Chromomycin A3), and FISH with repetitive DNA probes (5S rDNA, 18S rDNA, Rex1 element and microsatellite repeats). RESULTS: This approach evidenced two contrasting karyotypes (named karyomorphs A and B) that varied concerning their 2n and repetitive DNAs distribution, where chromosomal fusions and pericentric inversions were involved in such differentiation. While the karyomorph A has 2n = 24 chromosomes, the karyomorph B has only 2n = 18, both with NF = 24. In addition, karyomorph A contains only acrocentric chromosomes, while karyomorph B contains three unique metacentric pairs. These features highlight that M. albus has already gone through a significant genomic divergence, and may include at least two cryptic species. CONCLUSIONS: This marked chromosomal differentiation, likely linked to the lifestyle of these fishes, point to the occurrence of a chromosomal speciation scenario, in which fusions and inversions had a prominent role. This highlights the biodiversity of M. albus and justifies its taxonomic revision, since this nominal species may constitute a species complex.

Hypoxia and climate warming are pervasive stressors in aquatic systems that may have interactive effects on fishes because both affect aerobic metabolism. We explored independent and interactive effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) and temperature on thermal tolerance, behavior, and fitness-related traits of juvenile F1 offspring of the African cichlid Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor. Fish were reared in a split-brood design with four treatments (low or high DO, cool or hot temperature); thermal tolerance, growth, and condition were measured after 1 mo in the rearing treatments, following which behavioral traits were measured over 3.6 mo. Critical thermal maximum was higher in fish reared under hot conditions but was not affected by hypoxia. There was an interactive effect of DO and temperature on agitation temperature (temperature at which fish show behavioral signs of thermal stress) and the thermal agitation window (°C between the onset of agitation and final loss of equilibrium). Fish reared and tested under hot, normoxic conditions showed a higher agitation temperature, while fish reared and tested under hot, hypoxic conditions showed the largest thermal agitation window. Fish grew more quickly in length under hot than cool conditions and more quickly under normoxic than hypoxic conditions. Fish reared under cool, normoxic conditions were characterized by higher condition than other groups. Both cool and hypoxic rearing conditions reduced activity and aggression. These results highlight the importance of integrating physiological tolerance measures with sublethal behavioral effects of hypoxia and high temperature to gain a fuller understanding of species responses to multiple stressors.

ResumenColombia posee una alta diversidad de peces de montaña dentro de la región Andina, con alto número de endemismos, por lo que el conocimiento de su biología reproductiva es necesario para su protección y conservación. Se estudió la biología reproductiva de Saccodon dariensis en las quebradas Peñoles y El Cardal, parte media del río Guatapé, cuenca del río Magdalena, Colombia, para determinar si existen diferencias reproductivas entre individuos con diferente polimorfismo bucal (morfo i vs morfo iv, definidos por Roberts, 1974) que permitan definir un posible aislamiento reproductivo espacial o temporal. Se realizaron diez muestreos de campo entre octubre 2007 y febrero 2012, en períodos de lluvia (octubre y noviembre 2007, mayo 2008 y noviembre 2011) seco (enero y marzo 2010, febrero 2012), transición de lluvia a seca (junio 2011) y transición de seca a lluvia (marzo 2008 y septiembre 2011). Se efectuaron capturas de individuos por medio de equipo de electropesca y de atarraya con ojo de malla de 1 cm. Se analizaron 468 especímenes, de los cuales 268 fueron hembras y 200 machos. La talla media de captura para el total de individuos estudiados fue de 109.6 mm de LE (65.5-174.0 mm), siendo para las hembras de 108.0 (67.7-174.0) mm de LE y para los machos de 111.9 mm de LE (65.5-149.4). Las hembras predominaron en las capturas, y la proporción de sexos de 1.0:1.34 se desvió significativamente de la distribución teórica 1:1. Igualmente el morfotipo iv predominó en las capturas y la proporción de morfotipos fue de 1.0:1.48. Con base en la evolución mensual del índice gonadosomático (IGS) y la proporción de individuos maduros, la temporada de desove se produce durante los períodos de transición de temporada seca a lluvia cuando empieza a subir el nivel de las aguas. Los menores valores del factor de condición que coinciden con los valores máximos del iGS indican que esta especie acumula reservas de energía corporal que son utilizadas durante la maduración gonadal y el desove. La talla media de madurez sexual (L50) para los individuos de S dariensis se alcanzó en las hembras a los 88.8 mm de LE y en los machos a los 109.3 mm de LE. La fecundidad fluctuó entre 1 137 y 39 303 ovocitos (media= 8309; DE= 9 021) y la fecundidad relativa osciló entre 144 y 1 131 ovocitos / g de peso total (media= 439 ± 212). El diámetro de los oocitos fue de 0.54 mm (SD= 0.07). No se observó desarrollo diferente en ovocitos, lo que sugiere un desove masivo. La coexistencia de los dos morfotipos, la reproducción externa y la ocurrencia simultánea de los picos reproductivos encontrada en este estudio, no proporcionan apoyo a un posible aislamiento reproductivo espacial o temporal de los morfotipos.


AbstractThe Andean mountain region of Colombia has a high diversity of fish, with high number of endemic species. To promote their protection and conservation, the knowledge of their general and reproductive biology is necessary. With this aim, the reproductive biology of Saccodon dariensis, in the Peñoles and El Cardal creeks, Guatape River mid-basin, Magdalena River Basin, was studied, to determine reproductive differences between individuals with different oral polymorphism (morpho i vs. morpho iv, according to Roberts, 1974), and to define a possible spatial or temporal reproductive isolation. Ten field samplings were carried out between October 2007 and February 2012, in periods of rain (October and November 2007, May 2008 and November 2011), dry (January and March 2010, February 2012), transition from rain to dry (June 2011) and transition from dry to rain (March 2008 and September 2011). Samples were caught using electrofishing equipment and cast nets (10 mm between knots). A total of 468 specimens were analyzed, 268 of which were females and 200 males. The average catch size for the total number of individuals studied was 109.6 mm SL (65.5-174.0 mm), with 108.0 mm SL for females (67.7-174.0) and 111.9 mm SL (65.5-149.4) for males. Females predominated in the catches, and the sex ratio of 1.0:1.34 significantly deviated from the theoretical distribution 1:1. Similarly, morpho iv predominated in the catches, and morphs ratio was 1.00:1.48. Based on the monthly evolution of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the proportion of mature specimens, the spawning season occurs during periods of transition from dry to rainy season when water level begins to raise. The lowest values of the condition factor that match the maximum values of GSi, indicates that this species accumulated body energy reserves that are used during the gonadal maturation and spawning. The mean size at sexual maturity (L50) was 88.8 mm SL in females and 109.3 mm SL in males. The fecundity of S. dariensis fluctuated between 1 137 and 39 303 (mean = 8 309, SD = 9 021) and the relative fecundity between 144 and 1 131 oocytes/g of total weight (mean = 439 ± 212). The diameter of the oocytes was 0.54 mm (SD = 0.07). Different development in oocytes was not observed, suggesting massive spawning. The coexistence of the two morphs, external fertilization and simultaneous occurrence of reproductive peaks found in this study did not provide support for a possible spatial or temporal reproductive isolation of morphotypes. Food and reproductive biology of Farlowella vittata (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) in Güejar River Basin, Orinoco, Colombia. Neotropical fish live in streams with considerable spatial and temporal variability of their food items. Food availability depends on different factors such as discharge, channel morphology, physicochemical conditions and interactions with other species, as well as their food habits. On the other side, good food availability results in reproductive success. Because the study of those changes contributes to a better understanding of trophic interactions in fish populations, the present work describes and evaluates aspects of diet and reproduction of Farlowella vittata in Pringamosal Creek, Güejar River drainage, Orinoco River basin, Colombia. Five collecting expeditions were done during both high and low rain seasons of 2008 and 2009. Physical and chemical water parameters were measured, and fish were captured from several points along the total length of the 7km stream, to characterize their biometry and stomach contents. Our results showed that Pringamosal creek is a first order stream, about 3.5m wide and with an average depth of 1m in our study area. Dissolved oxygen values were 6.2mg/L during low water and 2.7mg/L during high water phase. The creek is classified as oligotrophic but with a tendency to eutrophication. A total of 130 fish samples were analyzed. Fishes were assigned to seven size range categories between 86.0 and 175.5mm standard length (SL). Stomach contents revealed that the diet of this species consisted mainly of algae (Bacillariophyceae) (84.6% Abundance Relative), but we observed a variation in the diet according to season; during low rainfall it feeds on phytoplankton (86.47% A.R.) and during high rainfall on zooplankton as well as plant material and organic material (0.685% A.R. and 18.83% A.R., respectively). A Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA showed statistically significant differences in food items between sexes. The condition factor (K) indicated that the species was well fed. Size at sexual maturity was 154mm SL for males and 124mm SL for females. The gonadosomatic index (RGS) showed that this fish reproduced during high water (April-May) season, and females showed a fecundity of 1 819 ovocites, with an average diameter of 1.4mm. Although parental care was not observed during this study, it is well known that males protect their eggs and juveniles, making them easy to capture during the breeding periods identified in this study, and at the same time, vulnerable to overexploitation. We recommend an urgent management plan for the conservation of this species, since at this time, no fishing controls are enforced even though it is harvested as an ornamental species.


Los peces de quebradas neotropicales conviven con una considerable variación espacial y temporal de sus alimentos. La disponibilidad de estos alimentos depende de diferentes factores tales como la morfología de los canales, la descarga, atributos físico-químicos y las interacciones con otras especies. Es así como estudios de los hábitos alimenticios contribuyen a la comprensión de las interacciones tróficas de las poblaciones de peces. En el presente trabajo se describen y evalúan los aspectos de la dieta y la reproducción de Farlowella vittata (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) en el Arroyo Pringamosal, cuenca del río Güejar, cuenca del río Orinoco, Colombia. Se realizaron cinco expediciones de recolecta durante las temporadas de altas y bajas lluvias. Variables físicas y químicas del agua fueron medidas y los peces fueron capturados en varios puntos a lo largo de toda la cuenca. El arroyo Pringamosal es una corriente de primer orden con 3.5m de ancho y una profundidad media de 1m en el área de estudio. Valores de oxígeno disuelto son de 6.2mg/L durante bajas lluvias y 2.7mg/L durante altas lluvias, es oligotrófico con tendencia a la eutrofización. Ciento treinta ejemplares fueron analizados, 7 intervalos de tallas fueron recolectadas entre los 86.0 y 175.5mm de longitud estándar. La dieta de esta especie consiste principalmente de algas (Bacillariophyceae) (84.6% AR), pero se observó una variación en la dieta de acuerdo a la temporada; en bajas lluvias se alimenta de fitoplancton (86.47% A.R.) y en altas lluvias de zooplankton y material de origen vegetal y orgánico (0.685% A.R y 18.83% A.R. respectivamente), el ANDEVA de KruskalWallis mostró diferencias estadísticamente significativas de los ítems alimenticios entre sexos. El factor de condición (K) indicó que la especie se encontró bien alimentada. El índice gonadosomático (RGS) mostró que este pez se reproduce en aguas altas (abril-mayo). La fecundidad fue 1 819 ovocitos con un diámetro medio de 1.4mm. Talla de primera madurez sexual fue de 154mm de longitud estándar para machos, y SL 124mm para hembras. Aunque no se observo cuidado parental es bien conocido que los machos de esta especie lo presentan, haciendo mas fácil su captura durante los periodos reproductivos identificados en este estudio y vulnerable a la sobreexplotación. Se recomienda establecer planes de manejo y conservación de esta especie ya que es explotada sin control como especie ornamental.
