Serological evidence shows that the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infections are present in Brazilian dairy and beef water buffalo herds. As few reports describe the BVDV infection profile the aim of this study was to evaluate the dynamics of BVDV circulation in Brazilian dairy water buffalo herds through analysis of the seropositivity rate and the titer range of anti-BVDV neutralizing antibodies in a group of animals that are considered sentinels. Blood samples (n = 305) were obtained from unvaccinated, asymptomatic young water buffalos from four dairy herds randomly identified as A (n = 106), B (n = 62), C (n = 119), and D (n = 18). The detection and titration of anti-BVDV neutralizing antibodies were evaluated by the virus neutralization test according to the World Organization for Animal Health. Analysis of the results revealed two distinct epidemiological conditions. The first is represented by herds A and C where high rates of seropositive animals (A = 39.6%; C = 51.3%) and high and very variable antibodies titers suggested active BVDV infection. The other condition is represented by herds B and D with low rates of seropositive animals (B = 8.1%; D = 11.1%) and low and little variable antibodies titers suggesting an epidemiological condition of infection stability. Some variables were observed in herds with a distinct BVDV infection profile. Herds with active infection were big, open herds, and had more management practices. In contrast, the herds with infection stability were small, closed herds with few management practices. These results highlight the importance of evaluation, monitoring, and control of BVDV infection also in dairy water buffalo herds.

AIM: By using the finite element method (FEM), this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different corticotomy formats on the distribution and magnitude of stress on the periodontal ligament (PDL) during retraction of the maxillary canine. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A geometric model of the left hemi-jaw was created from computed tomography scan images of a dry human skull and loads were administered during distalization movement of the canine. Three trials were performed: (1) without corticotomy, (2) box-shaped corticotomy and perforations in the cortical bone of the canine (CVC) and (3) CVC and circular-shaped corticotomy in the cortical bone of the edentulous space of the first premolar. RESULTS: There was no difference in stress distribution among the different corticotomy formats. CONCLUSION: Different corticotomy formats used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement did not affect stress distribution in the PDL during canine retraction. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: From a mechanical perspective, the present study showed that the stress distribution on the PDL during canine retraction was similar in all the corticotomy formats. When using the Andrews T2 bracket, the PDL presented the highest levels of stress in the middle third of the PDL, suggesting that the force was near the center of resistance. Also, as bone weakening by corticotomies did not influence stress distribution, the surgical procedure could be simplified to a less aggressive one, focusing more on inflammatory cellular stimulation than on bone resistance. A simpler surgical act could also be performed by most orthodontists in their practices, enhancing postoperative response and reducing patient costs.

BACKGROUND: Between September 2000 and November 2005, approximately 10% of the retrospectively examined human adenovirus (HAdV)-positive pediatric cases of acute respiratory disease (ARD) requiring hospitalization at the Hospital Nacional de Pediatria Juan P. Garrahan in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were found to have a HAdV-B2 infection. OBJECTIVE: To characterize genetically and antigenically the HAdV-B2 virus isolates. STUDY DESIGN: Restriction enzyme analysis (REA), hexon and fiber gene sequencing and virus neutralization assays (VN) were carried out on 8 HAdV-B2 respiratory virus isolates. RESULTS: REA showed that the 8 examined HAdV-B2 virus isolates were HAdV11, belonging to two genomic variants: HAdV11a and a BclI variant of HAdV11c which we designated 11c4. Molecular analysis of the hexon genes showed that both REA variants had a HAdV11-like hexon gene. Confirming previous reports, the 7 HAdV11a virus isolates were found to have HAdV14-like fiber genes and therefore are HAdV H11/F14. The fiber gene of the HAdV11c4 virus isolates most closely resembled that of various strains of HAdV7. In VN assays, the 4 tested HAdV11a strains were serotyped as HAdV11-14. The HAdV11c4 strain was serotyped as HAdV11 but also showed a weak but significant reactivity with antiserum to HAdV7. Compared with the other HAdV-positive cases in our study, infection with HAdV11 caused a similarly severe disease. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide evidence to the long term world-wide circulation of HAdV H11/F14 as a causative agent of ARD. Combined, our molecular and serology data support the rationale to base the molecular typing and designation of recombinant viruses on the sequences of the hexon and fiber genes.

A revascularização cardíaca utilizando a ponte de safena é um procedimento bastante comum usado para restabelecer o fluxo coronariano. O sucesso do implante depende da adaptação do vaso que estava em um regime hemodinâmico venoso, e passa subitamente para um regime arterial. Durante este processo adaptativo, ocorrem diversas alterações moleculares cujo conhecimento pode fornecer alternativas de melhoramento da patência dos enxertos venosos em leito arterial. Neste trabalho está sendo investigada a regulação da IL-1beta tanto em veia safena humana como em modelo animal de arterialização venosa. A IL-1beta mostrou-se aumentada em veia safena humana arterializada tanto in vivo como ex vivo. Interessantemente, este aumento observado nos dias iniciais (1-5 dias) parece diminuir em tempos mais tardios (1-4 anos). Em modelo de arterialização de rato foi observado aumento de 12 vezes na expressão da IL-1beta após o primeiro dia de arterialização com diminuição posterior, mantendo-se em torno de 2 vezes maior em comparação a veia jugular normal. Além da regulação temporal da IL-1beta, foram também acompanhadas as alterações morfológicas que ocorrem durante o processo de arterialização venosa. Observou-se uma redução gradual de células musculares lisas (SMC) que quase desaparecem 3 dias após a cirurgia. Esta perda celular pode estar relacionada ao pico de apoptose observado já no primeiro dia de arterialização. Após 7 dias as SMC reaparecem, porém, de maneira ainda desorganizada. Concomitante com o reaparecimento das SMC observou-se progressivo espessamento da camada média, assim como surgimento de uma camada neoíntima. A IL-1beta, devido ao seu padrão de regulação assim como sua localização durante o processo de arterialização, pode estar relacionada com as alterações estruturais verificadas na arterialização do enxerto. Estratégias de intervenção modulando a atividade da IL-1beta poderão fornecer indicativos da sua participação no remodelamento do enxerto venoso...


The vein graft is subjected to increased tensile stress and the complex adaptive vein response to the arterial hemodynamic condition may predispose to bypass failure in some individuals. The understanding of molecular changes underlying this process may be useful for the development of novel therapeutical interventions to increase the vein graft patency. In this work, we investigated the early effect of arterialization on the expression of IL-1beta gene in human saphenous vein and the time-course regulation in rat arterialization model. IL-1beta is upregulated in early stage of human saphenous vein arterialization in vivo and ex vivo. This increase is also observed in arterialized rat jugular vein which showed IL-1beta expression 12 times higher on day 1 compared to normal jugular vein. Later, the IL-1beta levels decreases and maintain the level about twice above normal jugular vein. Moreover, it is observed gradual reduction of smooth muscle cells (SMC), which almost disappeared on the 3rd day after surgery. Apoptosis, which is markedly increased on the 1st day, appears to be an important event during this process. At the 7th day, cellular density and SMC proliferation gradually increased till the 90th day. There was a gradual thickening of the medial layer and formation of neointima with deposition of SMC in the subendotelial layer from day 7 on. Initially the medial layer appeared disorganized, day 7 to 14, then by day 28 it became more organized and the presence of an intimal layer with SMCs was evident. The neointimal layer increased gradually from day 7 on. These results provide evidence that the modulation of IL-1beta activity may be an interesting target to be explored I the future to increase the vein graft patency. Altogether, we demonstrate that the model of arterialization of venous segment in rat reproduces several of the morphological changes described in the venous graft disease in humans and thus will be useful in characterization...
