RESUMO

Tyler (Journal of Physiology 228 (1973) 637-647) reported that the sensitivity function for curvature detection has band-pass characteristics with respect to shape frequency. The shape of this function suggests that the curvature detection mechanism might consist of a set of sub-mechanisms each tuned for shape frequencies similar to mechanisms for contrast detection. In Experiment 1, we applied an adaptation for shape frequency to investigate whether shape frequency is the critical feature in curvature detection. We successfully replicated the U shape threshold function reported by Tyler (1973), but found that selective adaptation does not occur for shape frequency. These results suggest that shape frequency is not critical for curvature detection. In Experiment 2, we examined the possibility that curvature detection for the highest sensitivity range is mediated by a displacement process similar to that for Vernier acuity. The results indicate that curvature detection for this range is mediated by a mechanism that is sensitive to spatial displacement, and suggests the existence of a common mechanism for spatial displacement that mediates both curvature and Vernier detections. By comparing our results with those of several previous studies, we concluded that the apparent band-pass characteristic for curvature detection is produced by combining the characteristics of three separate limiting factors: local orientation at lower frequencies, spatial acuity at higher frequencies, and displacement in the highest sensitivity area.

Vernier acuity measures the ability to detect a misalignment or positional offset between visual stimuli, for example between two vertical lines when reading a vernier scale. It is considered a form of visual hyperacuity due to its detectable thresholds being considerably smaller than the diameter of a foveal cone receptor, which limits the spatial resolution of classical visual acuity. Vernier acuity relies heavily on cortical processing and is minimally affected by optical media factors, making it a useful indicator of cortical visual function. Vernier acuity can be measured, usually in seconds of arc, by freely available automated online tools as well as via analysis of steady state visual-evoked potentials, which allows measurement in non- or pre-verbal subjects such as infants. Although not routinely measured in clinical practice, vernier acuity is known to be reduced in amblyopia, glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa, and has been explored as a measure of retinal or neural visual function in the presence of optical media opacities. Current clinical utility includes a home-based vernier acuity tool, preferential hyperacuity perimetry, which is used for screening for choroidal neovascularisation in age-related macular degeneration. This review will discuss the measurement of vernier acuity, provide a current understanding of its neuro-ophthalmic mechanisms, and finally explore its utility through a clinical lens, along with our recommendations for best practice.

PURPOSE: Visual acuity (VA) is an important determinant of visual function. Here we establish procedures and recommendations for VA testing extending beyond the classical VA and thus make them available for future studies of visual function in health and disease. Specifically, we provide reference values for photopic and scotopic conventional uncrowded visual acuity (cVA) and Vernier-hyperacuity (hVA) and assess their reproducibility and dependence on contrast polarity. METHODS: For ten observers with normal vision, we determined photopic ("p"; maximal luminance 220 cd/m2) and scotopic ("s"; maximal luminance 0.004 cd/m2; 40 min of dark adaptation) cVA and hVA, for two contrast polarities i.e. black optotypes on white background and vice versa. To assess intersession effects, two sets of measurements were obtained on different days. RESULTS: Compared to pcVA (1.32 decimal VA; - 0.12 ± 0.02 LogMAR), the phVA (14.45 decimal VA; - 1.16 ± 0.04 LogMAR) scaled (in terms of decimal visual acuity) on average with a factor 11.0, the scVA (0.12 decimal VA; 0.91 ± 0.03 LogMAR) with a factor of 0.1, and the shVA (1.47 decimal VA; - 0.17 ± 0.02 LogMAR) with a factor of 1.1. There were neither significant effects of contrast polarity (p > 0.12), nor of session (p > 0.28). CONCLUSIONS: Our approach optimises integrated photopic and scotopic cVA and hVA measurements for general use and thus encourages the integration of these important measures of scotopic visual function in future studies. The absence of strong intersession effects demonstrates that no dedicated training session is needed to obtain scotopic and hVA measurements. The combined measures of scotopic and photopic VAs open a field of applications to study interplay and plasticity of the retinal photoreceptor systems and cortical processing in health and visual disease. As a rule of thumb, hyperacuity is 10× higher both in the photopic and scotopic range than conventional acuity. Thus, scotopic hyperacuity is close to photopic conventional acuity.

PURPOSE: We developed a novel method for measurement of hyperacuity and verified the utility thereof.METHODS: We developed a three-dimensional (3D) hyperacuity test using a 3D liquid crystal flat screen, a left- and right-image polarized display, and liquid crystal shutter glasses. We tested the technique in three groups: normal (n = 48), with cataracts (n = 14), and with macular disease (n = 35). We used a chart consisting of five dots and a reference line. Of the five dots, one was variably shifted from the other dots. A chart was presented to one eye and the reference line or blank image to the other eye; a subject scored positive when the dot in the unusual position was recognized.RESULTS: Hyperacuity was measured in terms of the reference line seen by the reference eye (RR), a blank image seen by the reference eye (RB), the reference line seen by the contralateral eye (CR), and a blank image seen by the contralateral eye (CB). All test scores were significantly lower when the reference line was seen than not (RR vs. RB and CR vs. CB; p < 0.01, respectively). For the RR and CR tests, no significant difference was apparent between the normal and cataracts group (p = 0.553, p = 0.494) but such differences were evident between the normal and macular disease groups (p = 0.028, p = 0.002). Also, visualization of the reference line by the reference and contralateral eyes did not differ (p > 0.05).CONCLUSIONS: Measurement of hyperacuity using our new method was not affected by media opacity but was significantly affected by macular disease. Presentation of a reference line facilitated hyperacuity assessment.

Towards the end of the 19th Century, Hering and Helmholtz were arguing about the fineness of visual acuity. In a talk given in 1899, Hering finally established beyond reasonable doubt that humans can see spatial displacements smaller than the diameter of a foveal cone receptor, an ability we nowadays call 'hyperacuity' and still the topic of active research. Hering suggested that this ability is made manifest by averaging across the range of locations stimulated during miniature eye movements. However, this idea was made most clear only in a footnote to this (not well known) publication of his talk and so was missed by many subsequent workers. Accordingly, particularly towards the end of the 20th Century, Hering has commonly been mis-cited as having proposed in this paper that averaging occurs purely along the lengths of the edges in the image. Here, we present in translation what Hering actually said and why. In Supplementary Material, we additionally translate accounts of some background experiments by Volkmann (1863) that were cited by Hering.

The process of reading words depends heavily on efficient visual skills, including analyzing and decomposing basic visual features. Surprisingly, previous reading-related studies have almost exclusively focused on gross aspects of visual skills, while only very few have investigated the role of finer skills. The present study filled this gap and examined the relations of two finer visual skills measured by grating acuity (the ability to resolve periodic luminance variations across space) and Vernier acuity (the ability to detect/discriminate relative locations of features) to Chinese character-processing as measured by character form-matching and lexical decision tasks in skilled adult readers. The results showed that Vernier acuity was significantly correlated with performance in character form-matching but not visual symbol form-matching, while no correlation was found between grating acuity and character processing. Interestingly, we found no correlation of the two visual skills with lexical decision performance. These findings provide for the first time empirical evidence that the finer visual skills, particularly as reflected in Vernier acuity, may directly contribute to an early stage of hierarchical word processing.

Location specific perceptual learning can transfer to a new location if the new location is trained with a secondary task that by itself does not impact the performance of the primary learning task (double training). Learning may also transfer to other locations when double training is performed at the same location. Here we investigated the mechanisms underlying double-training enabled learning and transfer with an external noise paradigm. Specifically, we measured the Vernier thresholds at various external noise contrasts before and after double training. Double training mainly vertically downshifts the TvC functions at the training and transfer locations, which may be interpreted as improved sampling efficiency in a linear amplifier model or a combination of internal noise reduction and external noise exclusion in a perceptual template model at both locations. The change of the TvC functions appears to be a high-level process that can be remapped from a training location to a new location after double training.

Amhlyopia is a developmental disorder of visual system caused by abnormal visual experiences in critical period,whose characteristic is low monocular or binocular best corrected visual acuity and without ocular organic lesions.With the development of the research,more and more studies showed that amblyopia can not only lead to a reduction in corrected visual acuity,but also accompany by many other visual defects,such as visual crowd effect,impaired spatial contrast sensitivity,decreased vernier acuity,contour integration deficit,orientation discrimination deficit,temporal processing deficit and global processing deficit,which has become a common concern of a social problem.A comprehensive understanding of visual defects in amblyopia is of great significance on the diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia.This paper summarized the research progress of various visual defects of amblyopia,so as to provide references for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia.

PURPOSE: To identify the factors responsible for the poor validity of the most common aniseikonia tests, which involve size comparisons of red-green stimuli presented haploscopically. METHODS: Aniseikonia was induced by afocal size lenses placed before one eye. Observers compared the sizes of semicircles presented haploscopically via color filters. The main factor under study was viewing mode (free viewing versus short presentations under central fixation). To eliminate response bias, a three-response format allowed observers to respond if the left, the right, or neither semicircle appeared larger than the other. To control decisional (criterion) bias, measurements were taken with the lens-magnified stimulus placed on the left and on the right. To control for size-color illusions, measurements were made with color filters in both arrangements before the eyes and under binocular vision (without color filters). RESULTS: Free viewing resulted in a systematic underestimation of lens-induced aniseikonia that was absent with short presentations. Significant size-color illusions and decisional biases were found that would be mistaken for aniseikonia unless appropriate action is taken. CONCLUSIONS: To improve their validity, aniseikonia tests should use short presentations and include control conditions to prevent contamination from decisional/response biases. If anaglyphs are used, presence of size-color illusions must be checked for. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: We identified optimal conditions for administration of aniseikonia tests and appropriate action for differential diagnosis of aniseikonia in the presence of response biases or size-color illusions. Our study has clinical implications for aniseikonia management.

PURPOSE: To determine whether objective visual function, measured by swept-parameter visual evoked potential (sVEP), is preferentially degraded by neutral density filtration (NDF) in normal control and fellow eyes compared to amblyopic eyes, and to determine whether the response to NDF is a function of stimulus type, using grating and vernier stimuli. METHODS: Monocular Snellen acuity and both grating and vernier sVEP responses were measured in each eye of 23 children or adolescents with amblyopia and 21 visually and neurologically normal children or adolescents. Acuity and sVEP responses were measured with and without a 2.0 log unit neutral density filter before the viewing eye. RESULTS: Suprathreshold sVEP grating responses were more sensitive than vernier to degradation by amblyopia in the unfiltered state and to NDF-induced preferential degradation of responses from fellow and normal control eyes. For threshold measurements, on the other hand, vernier responses were more sensitive to degradation by amblyopia in the unfiltered state and to NDF-induced preferential depression. Threshold vernier responses of amblyopic eyes were paradoxically enhanced by NDF. CONCLUSIONS: Neutral density filtration causes preferential degradation of both threshold and suprathreshold sVEP responses in normal control eyes and fellow eyes of amblyopes, compared to amblyopic eyes. The degradation is stimulus specific and dependent upon whether threshold or suprathreshold responses are measured. Grating responses are more likely to identify suprathreshold abnormalities, while vernier stimuli are more likely to detect threshold abnormalities. These findings may be used to optimize the stimulus parameters and design of future studies utilizing evoked potential techniques in amblyopic subjects.

PURPOSE: High concentrations of unconjugated bilirubin are neurotoxic and cause brain damage in newborn infants. However, the exact level of bilirubin that may be neurotoxic in a given infant is unknown. The aim of this study was to use a quantitative measure of neural activity, the swept parameter visual evoked potential (sVEP) to determine the relationship between neonatal bilirubin levels and visual responsivity several months later. METHODS: We compared sVEP response functions over a wide range of contrast, spatial frequency, and Vernier offset sizes in 16 full-term infants with high bilirubin levels (>10 mg/dL) and 18 age-matched infants with no visible neonatal jaundice, all enrolled at 14 to 22 weeks of age. The group means of sVEP thresholds and suprathreshold response amplitudes were compared. The correlation between individual sVEP thresholds and bilirubin levels in jaundiced infants was studied. RESULTS: Infants who had a history of neonatal jaundice showed lower response amplitudes (P < 0.05) and worse or immeasurable sVEP thresholds compared with control infants for all three measures (P < 0.05). Swept parameter visual evoked potential thresholds for Vernier offset were correlated with bilirubin level (P < 0.05), but spatial acuity and contrast sensitivity measures in the infants with neonatal jaundice were not (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that elevated neonatal bilirubin levels affect measures of visual function in infancy up to at least 14 to 22 weeks of postnatal age.

When monocular Vernier targets are presented with binocular disparate elements, an increase in vertical separation elevates alignment thresholds and also shifts its perceived visual direction towards the visual direction of the binocular disparate surround. This observation has been termed binocular capture. There is increasing evidence that this shift in the visual direction of the monocular target may be related to the type of position encoding mechanism involved in processing the relative position signal. This study investigated the interaction between capture magnitude and vertical separation for stimulus conditions that favored the recruitment of linear or non-linear position encoding mechanisms. Relative alignment thresholds and bias were measured for a pair of vertically separated (8', 30', 60', 120') monocular Gabor gratings (1, 2, 4 and 8 cpd). Grating stimuli were constructed to constrain relative alignment judgments to the carrier grating (CO) or to the envelope (EO). Relative alignment thresholds and bias were also measured for a pair of vertically separated monocular Gabor gratings comprising a 1 cpd vertical square wave grating (SQ) or a 1 cpd missing fundamental grating (MF). Capture magnitudes were significantly larger across vertical separation and varied proportionally with relative alignment threshold for the EO and MF conditions. This was not evident with the CO and SQ conditions. The stark difference in capture magnitudes between the stimuli conditions suggest that the increase in capture magnitude observed with increasing vertical separation is intimately related to the transition from a "capture-immune" first-order spatial filter mechanism to a "capture-vulnerable" non-linear/feature-based position encoding mechanism.

We present three experiments that explored the effect of binocular disparity on the perception of contours defined by motion in a Spatiotemporal Boundary Formation. Depending on the disparity, the stimulus is perceived as an object that moves behind a holed surface (occluded configuration) or as a luminous transparency that moves over a surface that contains dots (occluding configuration). In all of the experiments, we used a Vernier task to assess the strength of contour perception. In the first experiment, we measured acuity as a function of disparity for a range of speeds and dot densities. The results showed that, despite the difference in the percepts, acuity was similar in both situations, replicating the dependence on speed and dot density demonstrated in previous studies. In the second experiment, the results showed that the dynamics of contour integration were identical for both occluded and occluding configurations. In the third experiment, we tested whether the mechanism of contour integration works independently from the interpretation of the scene. In this experiment, we inverted the disparity during stimulus presentation so that the stimulus switched between occluded and occluding configurations. The results showed that the switch of the depth order increased the threshold to the value obtained with a shorter presentation time. This might be produced by a resetting of the integration process driven by the change of depth order. The results are discussed within a conceptual model that places the process of contour integration in the context of the perception of objects in a Spatiotemporal Boundary Formation.(AU)

The present paper focuses on a classic hyperacuity, Vernier acuity-the ability to discriminate breaks in the collinearity of lines or edges on the order of only arcseconds of visual angle. We measured steady-state sweep visual evoked potentials (sVEPs) in response to 6 Hz periodic breaks in collinearity (Vernier offsets) in horizontal squarewave gratings. Vernier thresholds, estimated by extrapolating the amplitude of the first harmonic (1F) to 0 µV, were measured for gratings with 4%, 8%, 16%, 32%, 64%, and 80% contrast, with gaps of 0, 2, or 5 arcmin introduced between neighboring bar elements that formed the Vernier offsets. Thresholds for the 2F response component provided an estimate of motion thresholds. The data confirmed and extended evidence that the odd- and even-harmonic components reflect cortical activity of different neurons (i.e., neurons that respond asymmetrically to the periodic breaks in alignment and neurons that respond symmetrically to the local relative motion cue of the stimulus). Suprathreshold data (peak amplitude, response slope, and response phase at the peak amplitude) provided additional independent evidence of this notion. Vernier thresholds decreased linearly as contrast increased, with a slope of approximately -0.5 on log-log axes, similar to prior psychophysical results. The form of contrast dependence showed more similarity to measures of magnocellular ganglion cell spatial precision than measures from parvocellular ganglion cells. Our data thus support the hypothesis that magnocellular ganglion cell output from the retina has the requisite properties to support cortical calculation of Vernier offsets at a hyperacuity level...

In object recognition, features are thought to be processed in a hierarchical fashion from low-level analysis (edges and lines) to complex figural processing (shapes and objects). Here, we show that figural processing determines low-level processing. Vernier offset discrimination strongly deteriorated when we embedded a vernier in a square. This is a classic crowding effect. Surprisingly, crowding almost disappeared when additional squares were added. We propose that figural interactions between the squares precede low-level suppression of the vernier by the single square, contrary to hierarchical models of object recognition.

The obvious symptoms of schizophrenia are of cognitive and psychopathological nature. However, schizophrenia affects also visual processing which becomes particularly evident when stimuli are presented for short durations and are followed by a masking stimulus. Visual deficits are of great interest because they might be related to the genetic variations underlying the disease (endophenotype concept). Visual masking deficits are usually attributed to specific dysfunctions of the visual system such as a hypo- or hyper-active magnocellular system. Here, we propose that visual deficits are a manifestation of a general deficit related to the enhancement of weak neural signals as occurring in all other sorts of information processing. We summarize previous findings with the shine-through masking paradigm where a shortly presented vernier target is followed by a masking grating. The mask deteriorates visual processing of schizophrenic patients by almost an order of magnitude compared to healthy controls. We propose that these deficits are caused by dysfunctions of attention and the cholinergic system leading to weak neural activity corresponding to the vernier. High density electrophysiological recordings (EEG) show that indeed neural activity is strongly reduced in schizophrenic patients which we attribute to the lack of vernier enhancement. When only the masking grating is presented, EEG responses are roughly comparable between patients and control. Our hypothesis is supported by findings relating visual masking to genetic deviants of the nicotinic α7 receptor (CHRNA7).

The present paper focuses on a classic hyperacuity, Vernier acuity-the ability to discriminate breaks in the collinearity of lines or edges on the order of only arcseconds of visual angle. We measured steady-state sweep visual evoked potentials (sVEPs) in response to 6 Hz periodic breaks in collinearity (Vernier offsets) in horizontal squarewave gratings. Vernier thresholds, estimated by extrapolating the amplitude of the first harmonic (1F) to 0 µV, were measured for gratings with 4%, 8%, 16%, 32%, 64%, and 80% contrast, with gaps of 0, 2, or 5 arcmin introduced between neighboring bar elements that formed the Vernier offsets. Thresholds for the 2F response component provided an estimate of motion thresholds. The data confirmed and extended evidence that the odd- and even-harmonic components reflect cortical activity of different neurons (i.e., neurons that respond asymmetrically to the periodic breaks in alignment and neurons that respond symmetrically to the local relative motion cue of the stimulus). Suprathreshold data (peak amplitude, response slope, and response phase at the peak amplitude) provided additional independent evidence of this notion. Vernier thresholds decreased linearly as contrast increased, with a slope of approximately -0.5 on log-log axes, similar to prior psychophysical results. The form of contrast dependence showed more similarity to measures of magnocellular ganglion cell spatial precision than measures from parvocellular ganglion cells. Our data thus support the hypothesis that magnocellular ganglion cell output from the retina has the requisite properties to support cortical calculation of Vernier offsets at a hyperacuity level.(AU)
