RESUMO

AIM: To describe staff experiences with the use of videoconferences with forensic psychiatric outpatients during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews with staff at forensic community services in the Region of Southern Denmark. RESULTS: Nine semi-structured staff interviews were conducted. Two main themes were identified through thematic analysis: Challenges due to technical uncertainty and the Use of videoconferences as support in clinical assessment and treatment. The second main theme also included a number of subthemes: Lack of opportunity for observation of a patient's overall situation; Compromise of nurses' professionalism; Limitation of disturbing stimuli means more focus on the conversation; Telephone contact vs. video contact-pros and cons; Expectations reflect attitudes; and Will professionalism be changed based on organizational and political perspectives? CONCLUSION: Staff opinions on use of videoconferences in psychiatric patients differed. The nurses in particular were concerned about whether professionalism could be maintained. Others experienced patients focusing more on the conversation when it took place via video because there were fewer disturbing elements. In general, expectations seem to influence attitudes toward using videoconferences.

RESUMO

Face-to-face meetings are often preferred over other forms of communication because meeting in person provides the "richest" way to communicate. Face-to-face meetings are so rich because many ways of communicating (spoken language and nonverbal cues) are available to support mutual understanding. With the progress of digitization and driven by the need to reduce personal contact during the global pandemic, many face-to-face work meetings have been shifted to videoconferences. With webcams turned on, video calls come closest to the richness of face-to-face meetings. However, webcam use often remains voluntary, and some participants choose not to turn their cameras on. In order to find ways to support webcam use-when desired-we analyzed how social norms in groups affect the decision to activate a webcam in a specific meeting. Based on an online survey with N = 333 participants, we found that social norms are related to an individual's decision to turn on the webcam, even when controlling for group size. If the number of participants with activated webcams in a university meeting increased by 25%, it was 5.92 times more likely that an individual decided to turn their webcam on, too. Furthermore, 81.84% of respondents indicated they would turn on their webcam if participants in a meeting were explicitly asked to do so. The results demonstrate a strong relation between social norms and the decision to activate a webcam in online meetings. They build a basis for enhancing webcam use and enable a greater richness of communication in online meetings.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of patients and providers regarding the use of videoconferences in older patients with depression. The qualitative study consisted of semi-structured interviews with patients and providers and focus group interviews with providers. Themes were identified through using thematic analysis. Three main themes were as follows: 1. Technical Challenges experienced by patients and providers experiences; 2. Videoconferencing as clinical supportive technology; and 3. Therapeutic relationship across face-to-face and videoconferencing formats. Several subthemes describing patients' and providers' experiences were identified. Taken together, there was a similarity between expectations, opinions, and attitudes in relation to experiences vertically across all main themes, and horizontally between the main themes. An optimistic outlook influenced user expectations, opinions, and attitudes and acted to mitigate an negative sentiment about technical challenges. This increased the adoption of videoconferencing as a tool for clinical support and enabled the development of a therapeutic relationship using videoconferencing, especially for provider users. Both patients and providers agreed that videoconferences could not replace all face-to-face conversations and that videoconferences, in most cases, were best suited for shorter follow-up consultations. Expectations, opinions, and attitudes, whether negative or positive, seemed to have significant impact on the experiences of patients and especially providers.

RESUMO

Aim: To investigate whether there is a correlation between age and satisfaction with the use of videoconferences (VCs) and whether the number of video sessions had an impact on satisfaction. Methods: This study was a subanalysis of the joint European project, MasterMind, and participants were recruited from15 pilot studies in 11 different countries. The Client Satisfaction Questionnaire 8 (CSQ 8) was used as assessment tool, and scores were summed to give total scores. Results: Participants were included if they had filled out the CSQ 8 questionnaire and demographic data were available. This resulted in a total of 199 participants. We found that the total score was not significantly correlated with age (Spearman's rho = -0.0415, p = 0.563) and gender (Wilcoxon W = 5,066, p = 0.409). There was a significant positive correlation between number of sessions attended (Spearman's rho = 0.5777, p < 0.001) and total score after adjusting for age, gender, region, symptoms score, and education level in a multiple linear regression model (coefficient = 0.170, SE = 0.059, p = 0.004). Excluded responders were significantly younger than included responders, had lower symptoms score, attended fewer sessions, had a higher education, and were more likely to be employed. Conclusions: VC satisfaction scores in patients with unipolar depression do not depend on age but increase with experience in all age groups.

RESUMO

This study explores young adults' emotional affect and attitudes towards ageing, as well as older adults' emotional affect and self-esteem following participation in the intergenerational videoconferencing programme Smile Connect (SC). The sample consisted of 94 participants (46 older Spanish adults living in a care home in Spain and 48 young Italian adults -secondary students- learning Spanish at school in Italy). Each age group was divided into an intervention and control group. SC consists of twelve 30-minute chat sessions conducted via Skype between the target groups over six weeks. Pre and post evaluations were made to assess the affect level in both groups, self-esteem among older people, and the level of negative stereotypes about ageing among young adults. At the end of the SC, the intervention group of older adults recorded significantly improved scores in self-esteem compared to the control group. Young adults recorded a reduction in their negative stereotypes about old age after taking part in the SC programme compared to those who did not. These findings suggest that involvement in the SC programme helps to improve the emotional affect of older adults living in care homes, as well as change the negative stereotypes about ageing among young adults.

In 2015, the Project of Telemedicine for Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) was initiated for the National Program of Congenital Heart Disease (NPCHD). The main aims are to provide counseling for the cardiology diagnosis in complex conditions in the child or the fetus, promote knowledge on complex diseases of low prevalence for early screening, accompany the process of continuous improvement in the diagnosis of CHD at provincial reference hospitals, and encourage teaching and training of the different participants in the network. Videoconferences were the main method of interaction. The provinces that participated the most were Buenos Aires, Neuquen, and Misiones; 55% of the consultations concerned patients with CHD, 20% pregnant women with a prenatal diagnosis of CHD, 14% arrhythmias, and 11% other reasons. Echocardiography images were shown in the majority of the contacts. In 35% behaviors were modified, avoiding the transfer of patients in 23%. Conclusion: In CHD, telemedicine is an alternative that reaches physicians more effectively through outreach consultation and response, optimizing timely diagnosis and referrals. In addition, this modality disseminates knowledge among low-level and high-level centers, reduces asymmetries in diagnosis for patients from the provinces, avoids unnecessary transfer of patients, and strengthens networking. This innovative modality may serve as a model for other specialties. (AU)
