RESUMO

Objective: To develop and evaluate a Chinese version of the Symptom Questionnaire for Visual Dysfunctions (CSQVD) to quantify visual dysfunction symptoms in school-age children with various eye diseases, and to explore the relationship between ophthalmological disorders and visual dysfunction symptoms. Methods: Following standard scale adaptation procedures, the Symptom Questionnaire for Visual Dysfunctions (SQVD) was translated into Chinese (CSQVD). We employed random sampling to survey 198 outpatients aged 7-18 to assess the psychometric properties of the CSQVD. Using the reliable and validated questionnaire, we evaluated the determinants of visual dysfunction symptoms among 406 school-age patients at an eye center. The CSQVD scores were correlated with demographic and clinical variables, including gender, age, eye position, refractive power, and best-corrected visual acuity. Univariate analysis identified potential risk factors, followed by binary logistic regression and multiple linear regression analysis on factors with a P-value <0.05. Results: The CSQVD scale's critical ratio (CR) values ranged from 6.028 to 10.604. The Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was 0.779, and Spearman-Brown split-half reliability was also 0.779. The I-CVI varied from 0.83 to 1.000, the S-CVI/Ave was 0.857, and the KMO value was 0.821. Multifactorial regression analysis indicated that high myopia (OR â€‹= â€‹5.744, 95% CI [1.632, 20.218], P â€‹= â€‹0.006) and amblyopia (OR â€‹= â€‹9.302, 95% CI [1.878, 46.058], P â€‹= â€‹0.006) were significant predictors of CSQVD symptoms. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that BCVA of amblyopic eyes (B â€‹= â€‹-5.052, 95% CI [-7.779, 2.325], P â€‹= â€‹0.000) and SE power (B â€‹= â€‹-0.234, 95% CI [-0.375, 0.205], P â€‹= â€‹0.001) significantly affected the CSQVD scale scores. Conclusions: The Chinese version of the SQVD scale (CSQVD) demonstrates good feasibility, discriminatory power, validity, and reliability in assessing Chinese school-aged children. Furthermore, those who have severe myopia and amblyopia reported more visual dysfunction symptoms.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the visual outcomes and improvement in quality of life (QOL) of patients with keratoconus with scleral lenses. METHODS: In this prospective study, 14 patients (28 eyes) with bilateral keratoconus were fitted with scleral lenses (McAsfeer 16.00 mm) in Pune city, Maharashtra, India. Uncorrected visual acuity (VA), best spectacle-corrected VA, and VA with scleral lenses were evaluated. The patients were given the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) for judging the QOL, before and after using scleral lenses for 3 months. RESULTS: The mean uncorrected VA of the 14 patients with a mean age of 28.64 ± 6.57 years was 1.18 ± 0.19 logMAR. Best spectacle-corrected high-contrast VA improved from 0.47 ± 0.25 logMAR to 0.03 ± 0.07 logMAR with scleral lenses (P < 0.001). Best spectacle-corrected low-contrast VA improved from 0.68 ± 0.22 logMAR to 00.47 ± 0.10 logMAR with scleral lenses (P < 0.001). Along with the increase in overall median scores on the NEI VFQ-25 from 1735 to 2930 points (P < 0.001), the distance and near activities (P < 0.001), vision-specific mental health (P < 0.002), social functioning (P < 0.004), and driving (P < 0.005) improved after using scleral lenses for 3 months. CONCLUSION: Scleral lenses can be an effective and safe management option for patients with keratoconus leading to an improved vision and QOL.

PURPOSE: To objectively assess visual function in Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) patients; this study evaluated pre- and post-idebenone treatment changes in primary visual cortical (V1) responses using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), given the challenges in subjective testing due to central retinal ganglion cell damage. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive study involving four confirmed LHON patients. METHODS: Four patients received 900 mg/day of oral idebenone for 24 weeks. Baseline and post-treatment visual acuity, visual fields, and BOLD fMRI responses while passively viewed drifting contrast pattern visual stimuli were compared with self-reported symptoms. RESULTS: Post-idebenone, one patient showed positive trends across subjective tests, reported symptoms, and fMRI. Two patients had stable symptoms and fMRI responses; one improved on subjective tests, and another worsened slightly. Another patient improved in visual field tests despite worsening symptoms and fMRI trends. CONCLUSION: fMRI may offer a valuable objective measure of visual functions in LHON and appears to be more relevant in assessing symptoms. Further research with more participants is needed to ascertain fMRI's role in developing objective visual assessments and treatment evaluation.

Early key visual skills, such as tracking objects, sustaining gaze, and shifting attention, rapidly develop within the first 6 months of infant life. These abilities play a significant role in the development of cognitive functions but are frequently compromised in infants at risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. This systematic review evaluates the potential of early vision function in the prediction of cognition at or above 12 months. Five databases were searched for relevant articles, and their quality was assessed with the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool. Eight studies were suitable, including 521 preterm-born infants at varying risk of developing Cerebral Palsy (CP). Each study showed a significant correlation between vision and cognitive outcome. Predictive analysis including sensitivity and specificity was possible for three studies. Methodological quality was variable. Sensitivity ranged between 57 and 100% in the vision function assessments items, while specificity ranged from 59 to 100%. In conclusion, early vision showed strong correlation with cognition ≥ 12 months. While no single vision assessment was found to be superior, evaluation of specific functions, namely fixation and following, both at term age and between 3 and 6 months, demonstrated strong predictive validity.

PURPOSE: To validate the Graves ophthalmopathy quality of life (GO-QOL) questionnaire in screening DON and to construct an effective model. METHODS: A total of 194 GO patients were recruited and divided into DON and non-DON (mild and moderate-to-severe) groups. Eye examinations were performed, and quality of life was assessed by the GO-QOL questionnaire. The random forest, decision tree model, receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve, accuracy and Brier score were determined by R software. RESULTS: In GO-QOL, age, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), exophthalmos, CAS, severity, and Gorman score were found to be factors related to visual function scores. On the appearance scale, gender, duration of GO, BCVA, exophthalmos, CAS and severity of GO were relevant. Both the visual function scores and appearance scores were significantly lower in DON groups than in non-DON groups (33.18 ± 24.54 versus 81.26 ± 17.39, 60.08 ± 24.82 versus 76.14 ± 27.56). The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the visual function scores were 91.1%, 81.7% and 0.939, respectively Visual function scores were used to construct a decision tree model. The sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of the model were 92.9%, 88.0% and 0.941, respectively, with an accuracy of 89.7% and a Brier score of 0.024. CONCLUSIONS: Visual function scores were qualified as a screening method for DON, with a cutoff point of 58. A multifactorial screening model based on visual function scores was constructed.

Blue light-filtering (BLF) intraocular lenses (IOLs) are designed to mimic the healthy natural adult crystalline lens. Studies that evaluated the relative merit of ultraviolet-only IOL design (ie, blocking wavelengths <400 nm) versus BLF IOL design (ie, filtering wavelengths ~400-475 nm in addition to blocking wavelengths <400 nm) on protection and function of the visual system suggest that neither design had a deleterious impact on visual acuity or contrast sensitivity. A BLF design may reduce some aspects of glare, such as veiling and photostress. BLF has been shown in many contexts to improve visual performance under conditions that are stressed by blue light, such as distance vision impaired by short-wave dominant haze. Furthermore, some data (mostly inferential) support the notion that BLF IOLs reduce actinic stress. Biomimetic BLF IOLs represent a conservative approach to IOL design that provides no harm for visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, or color vision while improving vision under certain circumstances (eg, glare).

This study aimed to evaluate visual function and perform multimodal imaging on patients with focal choroidal excavation without any chorioretinal disease (idiopathic focal choroidal excavation [iFCE]). Seventeen eyes of 15 patients with iFCE (8 men, 7 women; mean ± standard deviation age, 56.0 ± 10.8 years) were assessed for visual function including visual acuity, metamorphopsia, aniseikonia, and retinal sensitivity. Multimodal imaging included optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and OCT angiography. This study found that the maximum width and depth of the excavation were 597 ± 330 (238-1809) µm and 123 ± 45 (66-231) µm, respectively, and that FAF showed normal or hypoautofluorescence corresponding to iFCE. The fundus examination findings were stable during the follow-up period (96 ± 48 months). None of the eyes showed any abnormalities in central retinal sensitivity or aniseikonia. Metamorphopsia was detected using Amsler grid testing and M-CHARTS in two eyes. Therefore, this study is the first to quantitatively and qualitatively study metamorphopsia of patients with iFCE. Our results showed that most patients with iFCE did not have visual impairments, despite the presence of morphological changes in the outer retina and choroid.

Clinical Relevance: Visual function impairment from diabetic retinopathy can have a considerable impact on patient's quality of life. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) is most commonly used to assess visual function and guide clinical trials. However, BCVA is affected late in the disease process, is not affected in early disease, and does not capture some of the visual disturbances described by patients with diabetes. The goal of this report is to evaluate the relationship between diabetic retinal disease (DRD) and visual function parameters to determine which if any of them may be used in a future DRD staging system. Methods: The visual functions working group was 1 of 6 areas of DRD studied as part of the DRD staging system update, a project of the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative. The working group identified 12 variables of possible interest, 7 of which were judged to have sufficient preliminary data to suggest an association with DR to warrant further review: microperimetry, static automated perimetry, electroretinogram (ERG) oscillatory potentials, flicker ERG, low luminance visual acuity (LLVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), and BCVA. The objective field analyzer (OFA) was added after subsequent in-person workshops. Results: Currently, the only visual function test available for immediate use is BCVA; the remaining tests are either promising (within 5 years) or have potential (>5 years) use. Besides BCVA, most visual function tests had a limited role in current clinical care; however, LLVA, CS, flicker ERG, and OFA demonstrated potential for screening and research purposes. Conclusions: Although current visual function tests are promising, future prospective studies involving patients with early and more advanced retinopathy are necessary to determine if these tests can be used clinically or as endpoints for clinical studies. OBJECTIVE: To develop a comprehensive compliance assessment scale for postoperative visual function rehabilitation in children with congenital cataracts and to assess its reliability and validity. METHOD: Drawing on the Interactive Model of Health Behavior, we conducted a literature review and semi-structured interviews to create a pool of 36 items. The items underwent rigorous evaluation through the Delphi method, face validity checks, and item analysis, leading to a reduction to 18 items. To assess the scale's reliability and validity, we collected data from 225 parents of children with congenital cataracts. We employed SPSS version 25.0 for data analysis and evaluated construct validity using exploratory factor analysis, content validity, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability. RESULTS: The compliance scale for postoperative visual function rehabilitation in children with congenital cataracts comprises 5 dimensions and 18 items. Exploratory factor analysis extracted 5 common factors, with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 68.178%. Item-level content validity index ranged from 0.730 to 1.000, and the content validity index of the scale was 0.963. The total Cronbach's alpha coefficient, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability of the scale were 0.855, 0.778, and 0.859, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The compliance assessment scale for postoperative visual function rehabilitation in children with congenital cataracts demonstrates acceptable reliability and validity. It serves as a valuable reference for developing standardized nursing programs for these children in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: To examine relationships between visual function (ie, contrast sensitivity, visual field, color vision, and motion perception) and cognitive impairment, including any definition of "cognitive impairment," mild cognitive impairment, or dementia. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analyses. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Any settings; participants with (cases) or without (controls) cognitive impairment. METHODS: We searched 4 databases (to January 2024) and included published studies that compared visual function between cases and controls. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% CIs were calculated where data were available. Data were sufficient for meta-analyses when cases were people with dementia. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklists were used for quality assessment. RESULTS: Fifty-one studies/69 reports were included. Cross-sectional evidence shows that people with dementia had worse contrast sensitivity function and color vision than controls: measured by contrast sensitivity (log units) on letter charts, SMD -1.22 (95% CI -1.98, -0.47), or at varied spatial frequencies, -0.92 (-1.28, -0.57); and by pseudoisochromatic plates, -1.04 (-1.59, -0.49); color arrangement, -1.30 (-2.31, -0.29); or matching tests, -0.51 (-0.78, -0.24). They also performed more poorly on tests of motion perception, -1.20 (-1.73, -0.67), and visual field: mean deviation, -0.87 (-1.29, -0.46), and pattern standard deviation, -0.69 (-1.24, -0.15). Results were similar when cases were limited to participants with clinically diagnosed Alzheimer disease. Sources of bias included lack of clarity on study populations or settings and definitions of cognitive impairment. The 2 included longitudinal studies with follow-ups of approximately 10 years were of good quality but reported inconsistent results. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: In the lack of longitudinal data, cross-sectional studies indicate that individuals with cognitive impairment have poorer visual function than those with normal cognition. Additional longitudinal data are needed to understand whether poor visual function precedes cognitive impairment and the most relevant aspects of visual function, dementia pathologies, and domains of cognition.

Background: Dry eye disease (DED) stands out as one of the most common eye conditions encountered in clinical settings. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic ability and feasibility of post-blink blur time (PBBT) in detecting patients with DED symptoms. Methods: The study included 200 subjects, 100 with and 100 without DED symptoms defined by the Schein questionnaire, who underwent assessment of DED signs [visual acuity, PBBT, conjunctival hyperemia, lid-parallel conjunctival folds-LIPCOF, tear film break-up time-TBUT, fluorescein corneal staining, and meibum score]. Results: DED subjects had a lower PBBT than controls (p < 0.001), with subjective (6 (1-45) s vs. 8 (1-70) s) and objective (6 (2-33) s vs. 8 (2-50) s) PBBT measurements being similar between repeats. The correlations between subjective and objective PBBT measurements were significantly positive (R = 0.873, p < 0.001). Subjective PBBT was negatively related to the Schein questionnaire (R = -0.217, p = 0.002), conjunctival hyperemia (R = -0.105, p = 0.035), and corneal staining (R = -0.153, p = 0.031), while positively related to the TBUT (R = 0.382, p < 0.001) and meibum score (R = 0.106, p = 0.033). Logistic regression analysis showed DED symptoms were significantly associated with subjective PBBT (AOR 0.91, p = 0.001), TBUT (AOR 0.79, p < 0.001), meibum score (AOR 0.65, p = 0.008), LIPCOF (AOR 1.18, p = 0.002) and corneal staining (AOR 1.14, p = 0.028). Conclusions: Subjective self-reported PBBT is a reliable and non-invasive screening test for evaluating time-wise changes in visual acuity and detecting a tear film dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) are autoimmune-mediated central nervous system disorders distinguished by the presence of serum aquaporine-4 IgG antibody (AQP4-Ab). The clinical panel comprises severe optic neuritis (ON) and transverse myelitis, which can result in incomplete recovery and a high risk of recurrence. METHODS: This study aimed to evaluate the visual outcomes of three patients with severe acute ON in NMOSD that was non-responsive to intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP), who received plasma exchange therapy (PLEX). We included three patients (P1, P2 and P3) with severe acute ON who had no improvement after IVMP treatment and were admitted to the ophthalmology department at the Emergency University Hospital Bucharest from January 2022 to September 2023. All three patients with ON were diagnosed in accordance with the criteria described by the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial. All the subjects were experiencing their first attack. RESULTS: The mean recruitment age was 35.3 ± 7.71. All patients were seropositive for the AQP4 antibody. All patients were tested for serum myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) antibody but only one showed a positive test (P3). Lesions visible in orbital MRI indicated the involvement of retrobulbar, canalicular and/or intracranial segments. All three subjects had no response or incomplete remission after an IVMP protocol (5 days of 1000 mg intravenous methylprednisolone in sodium chloride 0.9%). The mean time from onset of optic neuritis to PLEX was 37.6 days. The PLEX treatment protocol comprised five cycles of plasma exchange treatment over 10 days, with a plasma exchange session every other day. An amount of 1 to 1.5 volumes of circulating plasma were dialyzed for 2-4 h. At 1 month after the completion of PLEX therapy, BCVA and VF parameters were improved in all three patients. CONCLUSION: The treatment of ON remains subject to debate and is somewhat controversial. Plasma exchange must be considered as a rescue therapy when IVMP is insufficient for AQP4-ON patients. This study revealed that PLEX treatment effectively improves the visual outcomes of patients experiencing their first attack of severe acute isolated ON after high-dose IVMP treatment. This study suggests that PLEX may be associated with improved visual outcomes in NMOSD acute optic neuritis.

The inconsistency in terminology for Cortical Visual Impairment or Cerebral Visual Impairment presents challenges: (1) different levels of changes in visual pathway and other cerebral areas do not allow discrimination; (2) different visual and oculomotor aspects are not adequately considered. We open a debate to consider a more appropriate diagnosis.

The effects of hypoxia on brain function remain largely unknown. This study aimed to clarify this issue by visual-stimulated functional magnetic resonance imaging design. Twenty-three college students with a 30-d high-altitude exposure were tested before, 1 week and 3 months after returning to sea level. Brain functional magnetic resonance imaging and retinal electroretinogram were acquired. One week after returning to sea level, decreased blood oxygenation level dependent in the right lingual gyrus accompanied with increased blood oxygenation level dependent in the frontal cortex and insular cortex, and decreased amplitude of electroretinogram a-wave in right eye; moreover, the bilateral lingual gyri showed increased functional connectivity within the dorsal visual stream pathway, and the blood oxygenation level dependent signals in the right lingual gyrus showed positive correlation with right retinal electroretinogram a-wave. Three months after returning to sea level, the blood oxygenation level dependent signals recovered to normal level, while intensively increased blood oxygenation level dependent signals in a broad of brain regions and decreased retinal electroretinogram were also existed. In conclusion, hypoxic exposure has long-term effects on visual cortex, and the impaired retinal electroretinogram may contribute to it. The increased functional connectivity of dorsal stream may compensate for the decreased function of retinal photoreceptor cells to maintain normal visual function.

Purpose: To explore the influence of corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) on dynamic visual acuity (DVA) post cataract surgery. Methods: A total of 27 patients with 45 eyes following cataract surgery were included in this study. The postoperative monocular object-moving DVA at the velocity of 20, 40, and 80 degrees per second (dps) were examined at 1 month. The total corneal HOAs were measured with Scheimpflug-based corneal topography. The correlation between postoperative DVA and HOAs was analyzed. Results: Significant difference was shown among DVA at different velocities (P < 0.001). The 20 dps DVA was significantly better than 40 (P < 0.001) and 80 (P < 0.001) dps DVA. No significant difference was observed between 40 and 80 dps DVA (P = 0.420). The vertical coma and the root mean square (RMS) of coma (RMScoma) were statistically correlated with 80 dps DVA (P < 0.05). The vertical trefoil, RMStrefoil and total RMSHOA were statistically correlated with 40 and 80 dps DVA (P < 0.05). The spherical aberration was not significantly associated with postoperative DVA (P > 0.05 for all velocites). The multivariate linear regression model revealed that age was a significant influential factor for 20 dps DVA (P = 0.002), and RMStrefoil (4 mm) and age were significantly associated with 40 and 80 dps DVA (P ≤ 0.01). Conclusion: The research demonstrated that larger corneal HOAs, especially coma and trefoil aberrations were significantly associated with worse high-speed DVA, but not spherical aberration post cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: This systematic review studies the relationship between Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) values and cognitive and visual function in childhood. METHODS: It included cross-sectional, observational studies or controlled clinical trials in humans between 0 and 18 years of age, analyzing MPOD values in 3 main databases: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. The study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement recommendations. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included in this systematic review. The relationship of cognitive function, visual function and diverse variables with MPOD was analyzed in 4, 4 and 5 studies, respectively. The age of the participants ranged between premature infants to 12 years. Most of the studies used Heterochromatic Flicker Photometry (HFP) with macular densitometer to obtain MPOD values. MPOD values ranged between 0 (undetectable) to 0.66 ± 0.03 d.u. Only 4 articles studied the relationship between MPOD values and dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin using questionnaires about diet. CONCLUSIONS: Lutein and zeaxanthin accumulation plays an important role during the maturational stage and childhood development. Although cognitive function is more strongly correlated with MPOD values, the relationship with visual function remains unclear, and further studies are required to support this relationship.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates how surgery for pituitary adenoma (PA) affects the visual pathway, examining changes in the retina, blood vessel density, and nerve function. Since PAs often impair vision as a result of their location near visual structures, this research is key to understanding and improving vision recovery after surgery. METHODS: Our study is based on a retrospective analysis of the historical data of 28 patients diagnosed with pituitary adenomas. We conducted assessments by reviewing preoperative and postoperative imaging records. These included optical coherence tomography (OCT) for retinal structure analysis, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for neural transmission evaluation, and optical coherence tomography angiography for assessing blood vessel density. These tools allowed for a detailed understanding of the structural and functional changes within the visual pathway following PA surgery. RESULTS: OCT findings show postoperative changes in the eye: thinning in average and nasal circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, thickening in macular central 1 mm inner plexus layer, ganglion cell complex, and nasal retinal nerve fiber layer. DTI reveals increased fractional anisotropy (FA) in the left optic chiasm and posterior optic nerve, decreased mid-segment optic nerve FA, and increased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in the right optic chiasm and nerve segments. Early postoperative reduction in radial peripapillary capillaries plexus density is noted. Preoperative ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness correlates with postoperative visual radiation FA and ADC values, especially in the inferior quadrant. A negative correlation exists between preoperative GCL thickness and postoperative visual field mean defect values, particularly on the temporal side and superior inner ring. All changes are statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study finds that surgery for PA has varied effects on vision. Early post surgery, there are changes in the retina and nerve signals. Macular GCL thickness before surgery might predict early visual recovery, influencing future research and treatment for vision issues related to PA.

(233/250) Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) causes macular edema and retinal ischemia resulting in visual field and vision loss. A bispecific antibody that blocks VEGF-A and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) has been recently launched and applied clinically to treat macular edema, but the role of Ang-2 in the pathogenesis of RVO is still unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of the anti-VEGF-A/anti-Ang-2 bispecific antibody (BsAb) in a murine RVO model. By using RVO model mice, the expression of Ang-2 gene and protein was examined in the retina through real-time qPCR and Western blotting, respectively. A significant increase in Ang-2 was detected 1 day after occlusion. Immediately after occlusion, control IgG 400 µg/mL, anti-VEGF-A antibody 200 µg/mL, anti-Ang-2 antibody 200 µg/mL, and BsAb 400 µg/mL were intravitreally administered at 2 µL. Visual function was examined using electroretinograms, and apoptosis was examined using TUNEL staining. Interestingly, BsAb partially suppressed the decrease in amplitude of a and b waves compared to control IgG. Anti-Ang-2 antibody and BsAb reduced apoptosis-positive cells 1 day after occlusion. Comprehensive gene expression profiles were also examined using RNA sequencing analysis. RNA sequencing analysis of the retinal tissues showed that BsAb suppressed expression of gene groups associated with inflammatory response and vascular development compared to anti-VEGF-A antibody. Taken together, higher expression of Ang-2 contributes to the pathophysiology of RVO, providing a possible mechanism for the efficacy of BsAb in suppressing retinal dysfunction in RVO.

RESUMO

In this review, we outline our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in the absorption, storage, and transport of dietary vitamin A to the eye, and the trafficking of rhodopsin protein to the photoreceptor outer segments, which encompasses the logistical backbone required for photoreceptor cell function. Two key mechanisms of this process are emphasized in this manuscript: ocular and systemic vitamin A membrane transporters, and rhodopsin transporters. Understanding the complementary mechanisms responsible for the generation and proper transport of the retinylidene protein to the photoreceptor outer segment will eventually shed light on the importance of genes encoded by these proteins, and their relationship on normal visual function and in the pathophysiology of retinal degenerative diseases.
