In Nigeria and tropical Africa, the bias towards the protection of natural sites on account of terrestrial biodiversity or their resultant ecosystem services has led to a considerably low number of freshwater conservation studies in the region. To close this gap, six lotic freshwater systems in three different natural sites (Obudu Mountains, Agbokim Waterfalls, and Cross River National Park) along the Cameroon border of Nigeria were evaluated for the biodiversity of macroinvertebrates and some aspects of water quality in December 2021 and March 2022. Among other macroinvertebrate-related indices, the community conservation index (CCI), which considers the presence of threatened, rare, and notable species, was used for the conservation evaluation of the freshwater systems. The Ephemeroptera-Plecoptera-Trichoptera (EPT) species were notably rich at the sites, with over 12 species each at the Afundu Stream, Kwa River, Cataract Stream, and Agbokim River. All of the sites had a very high conservation value, according to the CCI, which was greater than 20. Some Obudu sites (Grotto and Becheve streams), despite having fewer EPT taxa, had higher CCI than the Kwa or Agbokim River. This was due to the presence of the endangered damselflies (Africocypha centripunctata and Allocnemis vicki) at the Obudu sites and a rare mayfly species in Nigeria (Tricorythus tinctus), which was reported at Agbokim and Kwa Rivers. The presence of a notable damselfly genus (Pentaphlebia) at the Afundu stream of the Obudu Mountains also raises some hope that the critically endangered damselfly (Pentaphlebia gamblesi), whose adult was last seen in 1973, could still be alive at the site. Canonical Correspondence Analysis revealed that the proportion of scrapers had a strong association with high BOD and EC in Agbokim River, while the Becheve and Grotto streams which had high vegetal cover was positively associated with shredders. Also, increasing DO in Afundu Stream, Kwa River and Cataract Stream was positively associated with EPT richness. This study revealed that more freshwater ecological studies need to be conducted at isolated natural sites and protected areas in Africa. Findings from such studies have implications for preserving freshwater ecosystems of high conservation value from the various threats that characterize the Anthropocene.

Snails of the genus Cremnoconchus - the only freshwater members of the gastropod family Littorinidae - are endemic to the spray zones of numerous waterfalls in the Western Ghats of India. Cremnoconchus consists of nine described and possibly numerous undescribed species as many of these appear to be restricted to specific waterfalls. This is the first attempt at resolving the relationships between the various species in this genus and establishing its monophyly in the family. Further, we also undertake species delimitation analysis to characterize cryptic diversity in this group. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear and mitochondrial genes support the monophyly of Cremnoconchus within the family. A fossil-calibrated Bayesian time tree suggests that this freshwater lineage diverged from its marine counterparts around 90.40 million years ago. The separation of Cremnoconchus from its marine ancestors might have been facilitated by the break-up of Gondwana or fluctuating sea levels during this period. Species delimitation analysis retrieved 12 potentially undescribed species in this group. These species formed two distinct clades in the phylogeny, one largely confined to the northern Western Ghats and the other to the central Western Ghats. Species belonging to the northern and central Western Ghats seem to have separated around 56.11 mya, i.e. after the northern Western Ghats were formed. Additionally, spatial isolation due to the patchiness of suitable habitats (waterfalls) and low mobility might have facilitated their diversification.

The ichthyofauna of the La Plata hydrographic basin is divided into Upper and Lower Paraná River systems due to the geographic isolation of the Sete Quedas waterfalls, currently flooded by the lake of the Itaipu dam. In Parodontidae, pairs of species, or groups of cryptic species were described between these systems. Although genetic isolation and speciation have already been proposed in other species in the group, Parodon nasus has been maintained as a valid species and distributed throughout the La Plata river basin. In this perspective, specimens of P. nasus from four different sampling sites in the Upper and Lower Paraná River systems were compared regarding the karyotypes, molecular analyzes of population biology and species delimitation to investigate their genetic and population isolation in the La Plata river basin. Despite a geographic barrier and the immense geographic distance separating the specimens sampled from the Lower Paraná River system compared to those from the Upper Paraná River, the data obtained showed P. nasus as a unique taxon. Thus, unlike other species of Parodontidae that showed diversification when comparing the groups residing in the Lower versus Upper Paraná River, P. nasus showed a population structure and a karyotypic homogeneity.(AU)


A ictiofauna do sistema hidrográfico La Plata é dividida em alto e baixo rio Paraná devido ao isolamento geográfico dos Saltos das Sete Quedas há 22 milhões de anos, atualmente inundado pelo lago da represa da Usina de Itaipu. Em Parodontidae, espécies pares ou grupos de espécies crípticas foram descritos entre esses sistemas. Contudo, embora o isolamento genético e especiação já tenham sido propostos em outras espécies do grupo, Parodon nasus tem sido mantido como espécie válida e distribuída em toda a bacia do rio La Plata. Nessa perspectiva, exemplares de P. nasus de quatro diferentes pontos de amostragem nos sistemas do alto e baixo rio Paraná foram comparados quanto ao arranjo dos cariótipos, análises moleculares de biologia populacional e delimitação de espécies, afim de investigar seu isolamento genético e populacional na bacia do rio La Plata. Apesar da barreira geográfica e imensa distância geográfica separando os exemplares amostrados no sistema baixo rio Paraná em comparação àqueles do alto rio Paraná, os dados obtidos demonstraram P. nasus como único táxon válido. Dessa forma, diferentemente de outras espécies de Parodontidae que demonstraram diversificação quando comparados grupos pares residentes no baixo e alto rio Paraná, P. nasus demonstrou estruturação populacional e homogeneidade cariotípica.(AU)

Many researchers have suggested that birds may use natural infrasound sources for navigation and hazard avoidance. However, there is a need to define the sound levels and frequencies to characterize potential infrasound sources. This paper summarizes new measurements from Niagara Falls which define a stable, powerful infrasound source that could be detected by birds on a regional scale of over 400 km. Measurements made in the vicinity of Niagara Falls show that exceptional infrasonic pressure levels can occur in the regions of large waterfalls (> 100 Pa at a range of about 500 m). This paper reviews investigator assessments of avian use of infrasound. A review of the results of Cornell researchers on pigeon hearing provides a basis for estimating avian detection ranges of waterfalls. It is possible that migrating birds use sounds from waterfalls as beacons- a component of their "navigation toolbox" as well as infrasound for hazard avoidance.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess whether ecological inferences from isotopic functional indices (IFIs) are impacted by changes in isotopic baselines in aquatic food webs. We used sudden CO2-outgassing and associated shifts in DIC-δ 13C brought by waterfalls as an excellent natural experimental set-up to quantify impacts of changes in algal isotopic baselines on ecological inferences from IFIs. METHODS: Carbon (δ 13C) and nitrogen (δ 15N) stable isotopic ratios of invertebrate communities sharing similar structure were measured at above- and below-waterfall sampling sites from five rivers and streams in Southern Quebec (Canada). For each sampled invertebrate community, the six Laymans IFIs were then calculated in the δ -space (δ 13C vs. δ 15N). RESULTS: As expected, isotopic functional richness indices, measuring the overall extent of community trophic space, were strongly sensitive to changes in isotopic baselines unlike other IFIs. Indeed, other IFIs were calculated based on the distribution of species within δ-space and were not strongly impacted by changes in the vertical or horizontal distribution of specimens in the δ-space. Our results highlighted that IFIs exhibited different sensitivities to changes in isotopic baselines, leading to potential misinterpretations of IFIs in river studies where isotopic baselines generally show high temporal and spatial variabilities. The identification of isotopic baselines and their associated variability, and the use of independent trophic tracers to identify the actual energy pathways through food webs must be a prerequisite to IFIs-based studies to strengthen the reliability of ecological inferences of food web structural properties.

Bryconops cyrtogaster, a poorly known species endemic from the Oyapock River at the border between French Guyana and Brazil, is redescribed herein based on examination of available type material, as well as newly collected material. Additionally, a new rheophilic species from the rio Jari rapids, lower Amazon basin, Brazil, is described. The two species belong to the subgenus Creatochanes and are unique among the congeneres for possessing a posteriorly positioned humeral blotch at the level of the sixth and seventh lateral line scales. They differ from each other by meristic and morphometric characters. The list of endemic species in the rio Jari basin is revised.

Populations that are asymmetrically isolated, such as above waterfalls, can sometimes export emigrants in a direction from which they do not receive immigrants, and thus provide an excellent opportunity to study the evolution of dispersal traits. We investigated the rheotaxis of guppies above barrier waterfalls in the Aripo and Turure rivers in Trinidad-the later having been introduced in 1957 from a below-waterfall population in another drainage. We predicted that, as a result of strong selection against downstream emigration, both of these above-waterfall populations should show strong positive rheotaxis. Matching these expectations, both populations expressed high levels of positive rheotaxis, possibly reflecting contemporary (rapid) evolution in the introduced Turure population. However, the two populations used different behaviors to achieve the same performance of strong positive rheotaxis, as has been predicted in the case of multiple potential evolutionary solutions to the same functional challenge (i.e., "many-to-one mapping"). By contrast, we did not find any difference in rheotactic behavior above versus below waterfalls on a small scale within either river, suggesting constraints on adaptive divergence on such scales.

Abstract Geographical barriers influence species distribution and play an important role in the segregation of fish assemblages. The present study aims to test the influence of a small natural barrier on the spatial distribution of fish species in the Verde River, Upper Paraná River Basin, Brazil, considering two biotopes: upstream and downstream of the Branca Waterfall. We observed the highest species richness downstream of the Branca Waterfall, which also had the highest number of exclusive species. Richness, evenness, and abundance varied significantly among biotopes. The composition and structure of the fish assemblage differed between biotopes, which were characterized by different indicator species, mainly downstream of the Branca Waterfall. Physical and chemical variables and geographical distance between sites were not responsible for the differences observed. Hence, the present study shows that small barriers can also be crucial in structuring fish fauna and play a key role in the segregation of fish assemblages.


Resumo As barreiras geográficas influenciam a distribuição das espécies e desempenham um papel importante na segregação das assembleias de peixes. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar mudanças espaciais na assembleia de peixes do rio Verde, sob a influência de uma pequena barreira geográfica natural, bacia do alto rio Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. Para isso, seis locais foram amostrados e agrupados em dois biótopos: montante e jusante da cachoeira Branca. Maior riqueza e número de espécies exclusivas foram observadas a jusante da cachoeira Branca. A riqueza, equitabilidade e abundância diferiram significativamente entre os biótopos. Além disso, a composição e a estrutura da assembleia de peixes também diferiram entre os biótopos, os quais foram caracterizados por distintas espécies indicadoras, especialmente a jusante da cachoeira Branca. As variáveis físicas e químicas da água e as distâncias geográficas, entre os locais, não foram responsáveis pelas diferenças observadas. Dessa forma, este estudo demonstrou que pequenas barreiras geográficas podem ser cruciais na estruturação da ictiofauna e desempenhar um papel-chave na segregação de assembleias de peixes.

This work aimed to study the composition and distribution of fish species at four sites along Cabeça River, an affluent of Corumbataí River, tributary of Tietê River, intending to better understand the influence of local geomorphology on the occurrence of the species along the river. Using gill nets, trawl net, cast net and sieves, five samples were taken from each site every two months. These data were analyzed from constancy of occurrence, similarity index of Jaccard, rarefaction analysis and descriptive statistical analysis of richness. 4,532 fish individuals belonging to six different orders, 17 families and 65 species were captured. Differences in composition, richness (diversity), abundance and frequency were observed at these sites along the river. The sample site near the mouth of Cabeça River, was richer (49 species) and more abundant than the other three upstream sites, which showed fewer species and equivalent amounts each other (between 22 and 29 species). Moreover, this downstream site had the highest percentage of accessory species, whereas the other samples had a greater number of constant species. Cluster analysis from the Jaccard similarity showed that each site had distinct species composition. Cabeça River basin drains a rugged terrain in the state of São Paulo, between the Basaltic Cuestas and Peripheral Depression geomorphologic provinces. In this scenario, waterfalls and rapids influence the distribution, composition and richness of fish species.


Objetivou-se com este trabalho estudar a composição e distribuição das espécies de peixes em quatro locais ao longo do Rio Cabeça, afluente do Rio Corumbataí, tributário do Rio Tietê, visando uma melhor compreensão das influencias da geomorfologia local sobre a ocorrência das espécies ao longo do rio. Usando redes de emalhar, rede de arrasto, tarrafa e peneiras, foram realizadas cinco coletas em cada ponto, uma a cada dois meses. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se constância de ocorrência, índice de similaridade de Jaccard, análise de rarefação e uma análise estatística descritiva de riqueza. Foram coletados 4.532 indivíduos de peixes pertencentes a seis ordens, 17 famílias e 65 espécies. Diferenças na composição, riqueza (diversidade), abundância e freqüência foram observadas nos pontos ao longo do rio. O ponto quatro, perto da foz do Rio Cabeça, apresentou maior riqueza (49 espécies) e maior abundancia, e os outros três pontos apresentaram valores menores e mais próximos entre si (entre 22 e 29 espécies). Além disso, o ponto quatro teve a maior porcentagem de espécies acessórias em comparação aos outros pontos, que apresentaram maior número de espécies constantes. A análise de agrupamento a partir da similaridade de Jaccard mostrou que cada ponto teve composição de espécies diferenciada em relação aos demais. A bacia do Rio Cabeça drena uma área caracterizada por relevo acidentado no interior do estado de São Paulo, na região de transição entre as províncias geomorfológicas Cuestas Basálticas e Depressão Periférica. Nesse cenário, cachoeiras e corredeiras ao longo de seu curso interferem na distribuição, composição e riqueza das espécies de peixes.

The physical features of 20 streams inhabited by four recently discovered species of allopatric, non-migratory galaxiid fishes in the Taieri River, South Island, New Zealand were examined. Significant differences in particle size frequencies, combined waterfall frequency, channel depth variation and stream width: flood channel width ratios, indicated that Galaxias anomalus lived in low gradient shallow streams whereas G. depressiceps and G. eldoni occupied low to high gradient streams with more variability in depth. Climbing ability differed significantly among the species. Their allopatric patterns of distribution were, in part, the probable consequence of the abilities of G. depressiceps and G. eldoni to colonize areas that G. anomalus could not penetrate. Historical factors and reproductive biology of the four species are hypothesized also to be causal determinants of their current distributions.
