Purpose: Cognitive flexibility is a mental ability that aids in smoothly alternating between them tasks in the brain. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a, common disorder that has been associated with impairments in cognitive functions. This research is a retrospective case-control study aimed at establishing a clear relationship between cognitive flexibility and diabetes among Jordanians, considering demographic, anthropometric, and therapeutic variables. Patients and Methods: The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST)-64 item and the Trail Making Test (TMT) assessed cognitive flexibility in 268 people with diabetes and healthy control. Demographic, therapeutic data were collected. We also measured waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI). As the variables were non-normally distributed, non-parametric statistical tests were used to examine differences (Kruskal-Wallis) and correlation (Spearman) between variables. Results: The patient group did worse on the WCST In contrast to the control group, patients exhibited more significant delays for both Part A and Part B of the TMT (p<0.05). Males had higher WCST conceptual level responses than females. In addition, participants with professional jobs showed less delay in TMT Part A (p<0.05). Age was positively correlated with WCST's total errors and TMT's Parts A and B (p<0.05). BMI was negatively correlated with the WCST's conceptual level of responses and positively correlated with TMT's Part B (p<0.05). In addition, urea and albumin levels were positively correlated with TMT's Part A (p<0.05). Furthermore, creatinine was positively correlated with WCST's total errors and TMT's Part A (p<0.05). Conclusion: Some measures of cognitive flexibility are associated with DM status in the studied sample of Jordanians and other variables (educational levels, occupation, lifestyle, average duration of illness, and age).

Central nervous system tumors produce adverse outcomes in daily life, although low-grade gliomas are rare in adults. In neurological clinics, the state of impairment of executive functions goes unnoticed in the examinations and interviews carried out. For this reason, the objective of this study was to describe the executive function of a 59-year-old adult neurocancer patient. This study is novel in integrating and demonstrating biological effects and outcomes in performance evaluated by a neuropsychological instrument and psychological interviews. For this purpose, pre- and post-evaluations were carried out of neurological and neuropsychological functioning through neuroimaging techniques (iRM, spectroscopy, electroencephalography), hospital medical history, psychological interviews, and the Wisconsin Card Classification Test (WCST). There was evidence of deterioration in executive performance, as evidenced by the increase in perseverative scores, failure to maintain one's attitude, and an inability to learn in relation to clinical samples. This information coincides with the evolution of neuroimaging over time. Our case shows that the presence of the tumor is associated with alterations in executive functions that are not very evident in clinical interviews or are explicit in neuropsychological evaluations. In this study, we quantified the degree of impairment of executive functions in a patient with low-grade glioma in a middle-income country where research is scarce.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ability of selective measures on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test-64 (WCST-64) to predict noncredible neurocognitive dysfunction in a large sample of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) litigants. METHOD: Participants included 114 adults who underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological examination. Criterion groups were formed based upon their performance on stand-alone measures of cognitive performance validity (PVT). RESULTS: Participants failing PVTs performed worse across all WCST-64 dependent variables of interest compared to participants who passed PVTs. Receiver operating curve analysis revealed that only categories completed was a significant predictors of PVT status. Multivariate logistic regression did not add to classification accuracy. CONCLUSION: Consideration of noncredible executive functioning may be warranted in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) litigants who complete ≤ 1 category on the WCST-64.

There is a clinically unmet need for a neuropsychological tool that reflects the pathophysiology of cognitive dysfunction in cerebellar degeneration. We investigated cognitive flexibility in degenerative cerebellar ataxia patients and aim to identify the pathophysiological correlates of cognitive dysfunction in relation to cerebellar cognitive circuits. We prospectively enrolled degenerative cerebellar ataxia patients with age-matched healthy controls who underwent 3 T 3D and resting-state functional MRI. All 56 participants were evaluated with the Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia and neuropsychological tests including the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Test, Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Mini-Mental State Examination. From MRI scans, we analysed the correlation of whole-brain volume and cortico-cerebellar functional connectivity with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performances. A total of 52 participants (29 ataxia patients and 23 healthy controls) were enrolled in this study. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test scores (total error percentage, perseverative error percentage, non-perseverative error percentage and categories completed), Trail Making Test A and Montreal Cognitive Assessment were significantly impaired in ataxia patients (P < 0.05) compared to age-matched healthy controls. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test error scores showed a significant correlation with the ataxia score (P < 0.05) controlling for age and sex. In volumetric analysis, the cerebellar right crus I, II, VIIb and VIII atrophy correlated with non-perseverative error percentage in the ataxia group. In functional connectivity analysis, the connectivity between crus I, II and VIIb of the cerebellum and bilateral superior parietal and superior temporal gyrus was significantly altered in ataxia patients. The functional connectivity between left crus II and VIIb of the cerebellum and dorsolateral prefrontal and superior frontal/parietal cortices showed a positive correlation with perseverative error percentage. The connectivity between left crus VIIb and pontine nucleus/middle cerebellar peduncle showed a significant negative correlation with non-perseverative error percentage in the ataxia group. The impaired cognitive flexibility represented by the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test was significantly impaired in degenerative cerebellar ataxia patients and correlated with disease severity. The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test performance reflects hypoactivity of the cognitive cerebellum and disrupted cortico-cerebellar connectivity in non-demented patients with degenerative cerebellar ataxia.

Negative symptoms and cognitive deficits play a major role in psychosis and significantly influence the functional outcomes of patients, particularly those with a first episode of psychosis (FEP). However, limited research has explored the predictive capacity of cognitive deficits during FEP for subsequent negative symptomatology. Drawing from the Athens FEP research study, we conducted a retrospective longitudinal study in 80 individuals with FEP. All patients were drug naive at admission. Cognitive tests were administered at 1-month and 1-year post-admission, while negative symptomatology was assessed at the same time points using PANSS by trained raters. We considered confounding factors such as age, gender, duration of untreated psychosis (DUP), treatment received, premorbid social adjustment, and premorbid IQ. Univariate regression analysis identified cognitive domains that correlated with negative symptomatology. These, along with the confounders, were incorporated into a multiple regression, with the 1-year PANSS negative scale serving as the dependent variable. Employing the backward elimination technique, we found a statistically significant inverse relationship between the categories completed in the Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST) and the 1-year PANNS negative scale (p = 0.01), beyond the associations with DUP and the 1-month PANSS negative scale. Our results suggest that cognitive flexibility, a key component of executive functions, predicts negative symptom severity one year after FEP.

BACKGROUND: Securing a professional baseball career is a formidable task, and only a unique few can overcome the obstacles necessary to become a Major League player in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). When achieving a spot in a KBO Major League team, a player's technical aspect may be influenced by their initial neuropsychological status. HYPOTHESIS: Personality and neurocognitive functions influence long-term pro-baseball league success. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort observational study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: From the start of each player's career, we monitored the status and course of 153 baseball players in the KBO from 2009 to 2019 who agreed to participate in this study. The Korean versions of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Y (STAI-KY) analyzed traits and estimated state and trait anxiety levels, respectively. The Trail Making Test (TMT) (parts A and B) assessed attention shifting, and, in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), perseverative errors determined cognitive flexibility. Hierarchical logistic regression models were used to predict player status variables, with TCI and neurocognitive function variables as covariates. RESULTS: High novelty-seeking scores, low state anxiety, and short TMT A results reliably predict KBO Major League participation in a player's third year. Similarly, low state anxiety scores and high harm avoidance, reward dependence, and self-transcendence scores accurately predict KBO Major League participation in a player's fifth year. Lastly, short TMT A results, low perseverative error scores, and high novelty-seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, and self-transcendence efficiently predict KBO Major League participation in a player's seventh year. CONCLUSION: Draft ranking, personality, and neurocognitive function are associated with pro-baseball league achievement. In particular, personality and neuropsychological functions are associated with long-term success. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Clinically, sound personality and neuropsychological functions determine KBO Major League success.

An increase in suicide rates during adolescence has made it the second leading cause of death for this age group. While potential deficits in cognitive flexibility have been thought to contribute to suicidality, this factor has been evaluated in only a few studies among this age group. The current study sought to evaluate cognitive flexibility in 100 psychiatric inpatient children and adolescents (age X=14.39, SD=2.53), with (n=26) and without (n=74) a history of suicide attempts, using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results showed no differences between the groups in WCST scores. However, in a small sub-sample with mood disorders only, those with a history of a suicide attempt performed better than those without such history. These findings are contrary to our hypothesis that those who attempted suicide have worse cognitive flexibility, though consistent with earlier data in adults. Further research is needed to shed light on these findings.

BACKGROUND: In spite of increasing evidence of the clinical importance of cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), the relationship between CMBs and cognitive impairment is still controversial. In addition, there are very limited prior data regarding the prospective association of additional CMBs over time with a decline in cognitive function. This study thus aimed to investigate the effects of newly detected CMBs on cognitive decline in a Japanese health examination cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study involving 769 Japanese participants (mean age, 61.6 years) with a mean follow-up of 7.3 ± 3.5 years. CMBs were classified according to their locations. Cognitive functions were evaluated using Okabe's Intelligence Scale, Koh's block design test, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to examine the relationship between the newly detected CMBs and cognitive decline. RESULTS: Fifty-six (7.3%) participants (16 had new strictly lobar cerebral microbleeds and 40 had new deep or infratentorial cerebral microbleeds) developed new CMBs during the follow-up period. In multivariable analysis, newly detected strictly lobar CMBs were associated with a greater decline in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in the categories achieved (ß: - 0.862 [95% CI: - 1.325, - 0.399]; P < 0.0001), greater increase in perseverative errors of Nelson (ß: 0.603 [95% CI: 0.023, 1.183]; P = 0.04), and greater increase in the difficulty with maintaining set (ß: 1.321 [95% CI: 0.801, 1.842]; P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Strictly lobar CMBs over time were associated with a decline in executive function.

@#Introduction: Alcohol, when used frequently, accelerates the ageing process, causes brain damage, and results in a reduced volume of grey and white matter, leading to frontal lobe abnormalities. The neurotoxicity resulting from alcohol overuse affects the higher functions of the brain. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of alcohol dependence on the executive functioning of the brain. Methods: This study was carried out as a case-control study among 60 patients with alcohol dependence and 60 controls. Assessment of executive function was carried out using the Comprehensive trail-making test (CTMT) and the Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST). Comparison between the alcohol dependence group and normal healthy controls were calculated using the Mann-Whitney U test as data followed a non-parametric distribution. Results: The mean age of the participants among the cases and controls was 38.3±5.5 years and 37.8±5.4 years, respectively. The results showed a significant difference in both WCST and CTMT between cases and controls (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study concludes that there was an impaired performance in executive functions in alcohol- dependence patients in early abstinence compared to normal controls showing frontal lobe impairment in alcohol-dependence patients.

Aims: The dopamine- and cAMP-regulated phosphoprotein (DARPP-32), which is encoded by the PPP1R1B gene, plays a converging regulatory role in the central nervous system by mediating the actions of dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate. Previous studies have demonstrated that variations in genes related to the dopamine system influence working memory. The present study thus investigated whether polymorphisms in PPP1R1B gene were associated with working memory. Materials and methods: A sample of 124 healthy Han Chinese were genotyped for three single nucleotide polymorphisms of PPP1R1B gene, namely rs12601930C/T, rs879606A/G, and rs3764352A/G, using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Working memory performance was assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results: Significant differences were observed in the Total Correct (TC), Total Errors (TE), and Conceptual Level Responses (CLR) scores of the WCST among the three rs12601930C/T genotypes (p = 0.044, 0.044, and 0.047, respectively); in TC, TE, Non-Perseverative Errors (NPE), and CLR scores between participants with the CC and (CT + TT) rs12601930C/T polymorphism genotypes (p = 0.032, 0.032, 0.019, and 0.029, respectively); in TC, TE, Perseverative Errors (PE), NPE, and CLR scores between participants with the (CT + CC) and TT rs12601930C/T polymorphism genotypes (p = 0.001, 0.001, 0.011, 0.004, and 0.001, respectively); and in NPE and CLR scores between participants with the GG and (AG + AA) genotypes of the rs3764352A/G polymorphism (p = 0.011 and 0.010). Furthermore, for males only, there were significant differences in TC, TE, PE, NPE, and CLR scores among the rs12601930C/T genotypes (p = 0.020, 0.020, 0.037, 0.029, and 0.014, respectively) and NPE and CLR scores among the rs3764352 genotypes (p = 0.045 and 0.042). Conclusion: PPP1R1B gene polymorphisms rs12601930C/T and rs3764352A/G might be associated with working memory assessed by the WCST in healthy Chinese adults, especially among males.

Preterm birth is a neurodevelopmental risk condition often associated with cognitive control (CC) impairment. Recent evidence showed that CC can be implicitly adapted through associative learning. In the present study we investigated the ability to flexibly adjust CC as a function of implicit stimulus-response temporal regularities in preterm (PT; N = 21; mean age 8 ± 1.3 years; gestational age 30 ± 18.5 weeks) and full-term (FT; N = 20; mean age 8 ± 1.3 years) school-age children. All children underwent an HD-EEG recording while undergoing the Dynamic Temporal Prediction (DTP) task, a simple S1-S2 detection task purposely designed to generate local-global temporal predictability of imperative stimuli. The Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST) was administered to measure explicit CC. The PT group showed more premature and slower (DTP) as well as perseverative (WCST) responses than the FT group. Moreover, pre-terms showed poor adaptive CC as revealed by less efficient global response-speed adjustment. This behavioral pattern was mirrored by a reduced and less sensitive to global manipulation anticipatory Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) and by different cortical source recruitment. These findings suggest that implicit CC may be a reliable endophenotypic marker of atypical cognitive development associated with preterm birth.

OBJECTIVES: Executive dysfunction is considered to be one of the cognitive impairment dimensions that are easily observed in depression, but its underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear. Study have shown that the neuropeptide VGF (non-acronymic) plays an important role in the regulation of hippocampal neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. Previous studies have shown that VGF may be related to the psychopathology of depression and cognitive impairment. However, the correlation between VGF and executive dysfunction in MDD has not been investigated. METHODS: A total of 35 MDD patients and 31 healthy control patients were enrolled in this study. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used to measure the severity of depression, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) was used to assess executive dysfunction. Double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to determine serum VGF in peripheral blood. RESULTS: The level of serum VGF in MDD patients was significantly lower compared to that in the healthy control group (p < 0.001). Moreover, Response Administered (RA) scores, Response preservative errors (RPE), and Non-response preservative errors (NRPE) were all higher in the MDD group (all p < 0.05). In contrast, Categories Completed (CC) and Response Correct (RC) scores were lower (all p < 0.05). Further results showed a significant correlation between serum VGF with RA (r = -0.372, p = 0.028) and RPE scores (r = 0.507, p = 0.002) in patients with depression, while serum VGF showed no correlation with the severity of depression in either group. CONCLUSIONS: VGF may play an important role in executive function dysfunction in MDD patients, and VGF levels may become a new marker for predicting executive function dysfunction in depression.

Puerperium may lead to memory and executive/attentional complaints that interfere with women's daily life. This might be prevented by dietary compounds, such as neuroprotective polyphenols. Their bioactivity depends on their effects on lipid metabolism in different tissues, such as the brain, fat, and breast. Thus, a polyphenol-related cognitive improvement may be associated with changes of lipids in human milk, which are key for infant neurodevelopment. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 postpartum women from Córdoba (Argentina), involving several neuropsychological tests. Diet was registered to identify polyphenol intake and food pattern adherence, with sociodemographic and other psychological variables (insomnia, stress, subjective cognitive complaints) being also studied. Triacylglycerols, cholesterol, and their oxidative forms were analyzed as milk biomarkers. Multivariate statistical methods were applied. Results confirmed that women who consumed polyphenols presented better executive/attentional performance (i.e., higher correct responses, conceptual level responses, complete categories, verbal fluency; lower attentional interferences, and perseverative errors) and word retention with lower interference. Polyphenols were positively associated with milk lipids, which were higher in women with better cognition. Furthermore, they had lower oxidized triacylglycerols. In conclusion, polyphenolic intake during postpartum may improve executive/attentional functioning, memory, and milk lipid profile.

This study investigated the neuropsychological profile of college students who engage in binge drinking (BD) using comprehensive neuropsychological tests evaluating verbal/non-verbal memory, executive functions, and attention. Groups were determined based on scores on the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-K) and Alcohol Use Questionnaire (AUQ). There were 79 and 81 participants in the BD and non-BD groups, respectively. We administered the Korean version of the California Verbal Learning Test (K-CVLT) and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (RCFT) to evaluate verbal and non-verbal memory, respectively, and measured executive functions using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Trail-Making Test, Controlled Oral Word Association Test and Stroop Color-Word Test. We administered the d2 test to evaluate attention. Neuropsychological performance was analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance. The BD group showed significantly poorer performance in the long-term free recall condition of the K-CVLT and delayed recall condition of the RCFT and completed significantly fewer categories on the WCST than the non-BD group. In addition, there were significant negative associations among the AUDIT-K total score, AUQ binge score, and long-term free recall score of the K-CVLT. There were significant negative associations between the total AUDIT-K score and delayed recall RCFT score, and between the total AUDIT-K total score and numbers of completed categories on the WCST. These results indicate that college students who participate in BD have difficulties with verbal/non-verbal memory and executive functions, and further suggest that excessive alcohol use could have detrimental effects on the hippocampal-prefrontal circuit even with a relatively short period of alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience difficulties with emotional control and a consequent inability to perform tasks. To clarify the effects of emotional behavior on cognitive functions, we aimed to determine the association between emotional changes and executive functions in children with ADHD by measuring the pupil diameter changes associated with emotional changes. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This study included 14 children with ADHD and 10 typically developing children (TDC) aged between 10 and 16 years. During the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), which is related to context formation and task switching among executive functions, changes in pupil diameter and frontal oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) were recorded simultaneously. Pupil diameter changes during "cognitive shift" and "consecutive correction" were compared between both groups. RESULTS: During cognitive shift, the pupils of children with ADHD contracted, whereas those of the TDC were mydriatic. During consecutive correction, the pupils of children with ADHD were mydriatic, whereas those of the TDC tended to contract. These results correlated with WCST performance. Moreover, during cognitive shifts, changes in bilateral frontal blood flow were increased in TDC, but not in children with ADHD. CONCLUSION: The locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system plays an important role in pupillary diameter response. These results suggest that the LC-NE system may be dysfunctional in children with ADHD, and the system's abnormality may lead to affective abnormalities in such patients, which results in poor performance on WCST (i.e., impaired executive functions).

OBJECTIVES: The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a neuropsychological instrument that is widely used for assessment of executive functioning in both clinical and research settings. The aim of this study was to provide the normative scores for the WCST in a sample of Portuguese healthy adults. METHODS: The data was collected from archival data in a total sample of 359 individuals, 149 men (41.5%, Mage = 38.3; SD = 20.3) and 210 women (58.5%, Mage = 52.2; SD = 19.4). Descriptive statistics were calculated to describe mean scores, standard-deviation and percentiles of the WCST indexes by gender, age and education. ANOVAs were used to explore the differences between these scores in sociodemographic variables. The normative scores were adjusted for age and educational level. RESULTS: Significant statistical differences in mean scores were found in several WCST indexes, such as, total errors, perseverations, perseverative errors and conceptual level responses regarding age and education. Percentiles for WCST indexes were stratified by age group and educational level. CONCLUSIONS: Age and education are important factors explaining performance on the WCST. This is the first study focused on the development of WCST normative scores for the adult Portuguese population, which can be applied in clinical, educational and research contexts.

Many American and Dutch adolescents use marijuana regularly. There is concern that such use may impair cognitive function more in adolescents than adults. We examined effects of regular marijuana use on long-term memory and perseveration among American and Dutch adolescents. We administered Buschke's Selective Reminding Test (BSRT) to assess long-term memory and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to assess perseveration in male teenagers. Usable test data were obtained for 12 American marijuana users, 13 American controls, 9 Dutch marijuana users, and 12 Dutch controls. In BSRT, users showed lower overall long-term storage than controls (adjusted means ± SE's for numbers of words per trial of 9.4 ± 0.2, 13.4 ± 0.3, 11.7 ± 0.2, and 12.4 ± 0.2 for American users, Dutch users, American controls, and Dutch controls, respectively). Marijuana was associated with memory effects only in American, not Dutch, users. Bivariate Pearson correlations for American and Dutch users combined showed associations of lower total recall with more uses in the previous year and lifetime (r = -0.61 and r = -0.53, respectively); and more perseverative errors with more uses in the previous year (r = 0.55). Some findings were consistent with the possibility that regular adolescent marijuana use causes deficits in cognition, especially memory. However, a causal interpretation cannot be inferred from our findings and is challenging to reconcile with the observation of memory deficits only in American users. Our study was novel in examining the influence of nationality on marijuana's cognitive effects. More studies of this topic should compare effects across nationalities or cultures.

BACKGROUND: Executive dysfunctions, including difficulties in attention, working memory, planning, and inhibition affect 15%-28% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. OBJECTIVES: To investigate structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) abnormalities underlying executive function (EF) in MS patients. METHODS: A total 116 MS patients and 65 controls underwent resting-state (RS) and diffusion-weighted sequences and neuropsychological examination, including Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) to test EF. Brain RS cognitive networks and fractional anisotropy (FA) from a priori selected white matter tracts were derived. Associations of WCST scores with RS functional connectivity (FC) and FA abnormalities were investigated. RESULTS: In MS patients, predictors of working memory/updating were: lower corpus callosum (CC) FA, lower left working-memory network (WMN), right WMN RS FC for worse performance; lower executive control network (ECN), higher default-mode network (DMN), and salience network (SN) RS FC for better performance (R2 = 0.35). Predictors of attention were lower CC genu FA, lower left WMN, and DMN RS FC for worse performance; higher left WMN and ECN RS FC for better performance (R2 = 0.24). Predictors of worse shifting/inhibition were lower CC genu and superior cerebellar peduncle (SCP) FA, lower left WMN RS FC for worse performance; and higher ECN RS FC for better performance (R2 = 0.24). CONCLUSIONS: CC and SCP microstructural damage and RS FC abnormalities in cognitive networks underlie EF frailty in MS.

Cognitive flexibility (CF) is a fundamental skill for behavioural regulation and adaptation during the weight-loss process. Research suggests that bariatric surgery (BS) candidates underperform consistently in the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), which is a neuropsychological instrument that measures this ability. The current study explored the predictive value of preoperative performance in WCST CF dimensions alongside relevant psychological factors on weight loss after BS. The sample comprised 100 female patients who underwent BS in a public hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. We collected data using the WCST, the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), and the Binge Eating Scale (BES). Multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses were performed to obtain explanatory models of total weight loss at 12- and 24-postoperative months (TWL1 and TWL2 , respectively). MLR identified the number of preservative responses as a highly significant predictor of TWL1 (p < 0.01), and the SCL-90-R obsession-compulsion and anxiety indices as highly significant predictors of TWL1 and TWL2 (p < 0.01). The number of preservative responses was a relevant predictor of weight loss at 12 months. Persisting in maladaptive cognitive strategies was associated with a lesser weight loss during the important period after BS that requires the adoption new lifestyle habits.

OBJECTIVE: The frontal lobes have been reported to play in important role in metacognition. The present study evaluated metacognition in a group of neurological patients. METHOD: Twenty-one neurological (traumatic brain injury and cerebral vascular accident) patients were administered a metacognitive test and neuropsychological tests including a well-known index of frontal lobe functioning, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). After each trial, the participants were asked to evaluate their own performance on a face recognition test by rating their confidence about their accuracy on a scale of 1 (not very confident) to 3 (very confident). RESULTS: A point biserial correlation between accuracy on each trial and confidence was calculated for each participant as a measure of metacognition, Mcog. Mcog was significantly associated with the index of executive/frontal lobe functioning, WCST number of categories. Mcog was not associated with Full Scale IQ, General Memory Quotient, or Benton Facial Recognition Test score (short form, which did not include the experimental trials). CONCLUSIONS: These data add support to the idea that the frontal lobes have a special role in metacognition.
