RESUMO

Background: Educating Social Workers in Palliative and End-of-Life Care (ESPEC) is a nationally scalable continuing education program designed to improve the knowledge and skills of frontline health social workers caring for patients with serious illness. Objectives: This article describes ESPEC's rationale, development, and initial implementation. Design: Following the creation of consensus-derived core primary palliative care competencies for health primary care social workers based on the eight domains of palliative care outlined in the National Consensus Project Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, an evidence-based curriculum was developed. This was used to develop a hybrid training model with a self-study component, synchronous instructor-led skills-based training, leadership training, and mentorship. The interactive curriculum incorporates patient scenarios highlighting the health social work role. Training targets high-impact skills-the biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment, advance care planning, family meetings, and interprofessional communication-and professional development. Settings/Subjects: ESPEC was launched in the United States in collaboration with the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network (SWHPN). Results: The preliminary launch demonstrated high user acceptability, positive ratings for content and format, and gains in knowledge and competence. Conclusions: Data suggest that ESPEC can increase health social workers' knowledge and confidence as providers of palliative care interventions. National dissemination is ongoing.

RESUMO

This paper will begin with a review of child health inequities globally, in the United States and in the State of New York. It will then describe a model training program that was designed to educate social workers and nurse practitioners to create a workforce able to address child behavioral health inequities in the United States (US), specifically New York State. Behavioral health care refers to prevention, care and treatment for mental health and substance abuse conditions as well as physical conditions caused by stress and life crises. This project uses an interdisciplinary training program for nurse practitioner and Master of Social Work students to address workforce shortages in underserved communities in New York State. It will present process evaluation findings to highlight the program's initial success and will conclude with a discussion of the data that are still needed and the challenges of obtaining this data.

This qualitative study investigates through a realist evaluation how the work training programme of 10 community health workers (CHWs) contributed to culturally competent home care services. A European Social Fund project trained 10 jobseekers with migration backgrounds to become CHWs in Brussels (Belgium). Three research questions were formulated: (a) What increase in the cultural competence of the home care organisations can be identified at the end of the project? (b) How did the training contribute to this increase? (c) Which factors and preconditions made the positive outcomes of the training more likely? This study analysed 10 mid-term interviews with individual CHWs in training and four focus groups at the end of the project with CHWs, care employees, trainers and project coordinators (N = 25). First, the results showed that the increase in cultural competence was located mostly on the surface structure of the organisation (e.g. adapting communication materials) and not in its deeper structure. Second, the principles of strengths-based education proved to be important during the training (e.g. getting to know, recognise and address the competences and skills of the CHWs). Third, contextual factors at the micro-level (e.g. interest in care and cultures), the exo-level (e.g. management culture) and the macro-level (e.g. policy regulations) could foster or hinder the process of increasing cultural competence. This paper concludes that although the project contributed to a shift in organisational culture towards cultural competence, it remains challenging to effect a similar shift in the deep structure of care organisations.

Professional development has been recognized as one of the strategies to effectively combat sexual prejudice and negative attitudes against lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning/queer (LGBQ+) individuals and sexual minorities. Nevertheless, studies related to LGBQ+-inclusive training are rarely found in the Chinese Hong Kong context, where sexual prejudice still prevails without the establishment of antidiscrimination law. Sociocultural considerations, such as religious and parental influences, are obstacles to discussing the reduction of sexual prejudices, both within wider society and social work organizations, without institutional support. This paper aims to understand social workers' perspectives on prejudice reduction training themes and perceived cultural barriers through qualitative in-depth interviews with 67 social workers. Qualitative thematic analysis yielded the following themes: (1) understanding sexuality; (2) initiating training legitimately; (3) contesting religious and cultural assumptions; (4) resolving value and ethical dilemma; (5) selecting relevant knowledge; (6) implementing diverse training strategies. The study suggests that social workers and service providers need to understand how sexual prejudice is manifested in Hong Kong through unique cultural forces. LGBQ+-inclusive content, addressing updated concepts and prejudice-free language, should be incorporated into the training curriculum. Intergroup contact, professional reflection, and experiential learning are suggested as training strategies (190).

Students in all years, including those in lower years, were prohibited from coming to campus because of COVID-19, which began to spread in January 2020. However, we believed that a hospital tour and observership would be important practical training for first and second year medical students as part of the early exposure program, which aims to increase student motivation. Thus, we decided to conduct a virtual hospital tour and a virtual observation of medical doctors’ work. We used Zoom to conduct a virtual hospital tour for first-year students in June, and a virtual observation of physicians’ work for second-year students in December. Although this offered less of an opportunity to experience the reality of the clinic, there have been benefits in terms of increased learning content, fairness of learning opportunities delivered, and the promotion of independent learning. With regard to a “Hospital Tour” and the “Observation of Medical Doctors’ Work” , we believe that hybrid forms, which are able to skillfully combine the strengths of the two methods, would be effective.

Facilitating benefit and resource acquisition to assist clients is a major responsibility of medical social workers, requiring them to have a thorough knowledge of community resources, legislation, and regulations. The aim of the current study was to examine knowledge of the Law for Compensation of Scalp Ringworm Victims and ringworm-related irradiation damage among 101 social workers employed in diverse healthcare settings in Israel. We found that 65.3% of the social workers were aware of the law, but only 40.6% were aware of the health effects of scalp ringworm irradiation. Media coverage and clients who underwent scalp ringworm irradiation were social workers' major sources of knowledge. Working with former ringworm patients had the strongest association with knowledge of the law and of ringworm-related irradiation damage. Results highlight the important contribution of exposure to clients' experiences and knowledge to expand social workers' knowledge of health issues.

Há uma preocupação crescente em avaliar efeitos de treinamento no desempenho dos egressos, bem como nos resultados organizacionais. Apesar dos altos investimentos, nem sempre o que é aprendido converte-se em comportamento no trabalho. Estudos demonstram que motivação para aprender e transferir e suporte à aplicação de novas aprendizagens no trabalho são preditores de impacto do treinamento no trabalho. Este estudo objetiva avaliar a influência de percepções de Suporte Psicossocial à Transferência e Força Motivacional sobre Impacto em Amplitude do Treinamento no Trabalho, com base na avaliação de três treinamentos. Participaram desta pesquisa 2.'975 egressos de três treinamentos oferecidos pela Universidade Corporativa de uma empresa pública federal. Foi usada a técnica de modelagem de equações estruturais para testar 5 hipóteses. As escalas utilizadas apresentaram evidências de validade. Os resultados indicaram que Força Motivacional e Suporte Psicossocial à Transferência são preditoras de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho e que Força Motivacional é mediadora das relações entre Suporte Psicossocial à Transferência e Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho. Conclui-se que é preciso evidenciar os benefícios do treinamento para os egressos e organização, estimulando o aumento da motivação para aprender e transferir e que os egressos precisam de suporte de seus superiores e colegas para transferir.


There is an increasing concern regarding training effects in organizational results. Organizations invest a lot of money in training and often those efforts do not translate in better or improved results. This study aims to identify how support to transfer and motivation to transfer affect transfer of training and the mediation effects among that. Three corporate trainings were evaluated with 2.975 respondents of a public organization in Brazil. Structural equation modeling was used to test five hypotheses, referring to motivation to transfer, support to transfer and transfer of training. Results indicate that instruments are valid and that support to transfer and motivation to transfer predict transfer of training. Also, motivation to transfer mediates the relation among support to transfer and transfer of training. Therefore, it is necessary to evidence the benefits of training, stimulating trainees' motivation to learn and transfer. They should also have support from their superiors and peers to transfer of they have learned.


Hay una preocupación creciente en evaluar efectos de entrenamiento en el desempeño de los egresados, así como en los resultados organizacionales. Aunque las altas inversiones, no siempre lo que se aprende se convierte en comportamiento en el trabajo. Los estudios demuestran que la motivación para aprender y transferir y apoyar la aplicación de nuevos aprendizajes son predictores de impacto del entrenamiento en el trabajo. Este estudio objetivó evaluar la influencia de percepciones de Apoyo Psicosocial a la Transferencia y de la Fuerza Motivacional en el entrenamiento sobre el Impacto del Entrenamiento en el Trabajo. Participaron de esta investigación 2975 egresados de tres entrenamientos ofrecidos por la Universidad Corporativa de una empresa pública brasileña. Se ha utilizado el análisis de ecuaciones estructurales para probar cinco hipótesis. Las escalas utilizadas presentaron fuertes evidencias de validez. Los resultados indicaron que Fuerza Motivacional y Soporte Psicosocial son predictores de Impacto del Entrenamiento en el Trabajo y que Fuerza Motivacional es mediadora de las relaciones entre Soporte Psicosocial e Impacto del Entrenamiento en el Trabajo. Se concluye que es necesario explicitar los beneficios del entrenamiento para los participantes, estimulando así la motivación para aprender y el soporte de los superiores y colegas a la transferencia.

RESUMO

The current healthcare environment challenges social workers to balance multiple constituencies - organizational, payer-related, and professional - and convey the value-added nature of clinical work with patients and families. As healthcare systems move towards population health, leadership opportunities abound. This article provides an historical overview of healthcare transformation and its impact on social work practice, and describes strategies implemented to bolster the clinical focus and organizational responsiveness of Mount Sinai Health System care management staff. The training and supervisory approaches offered make possible relatable and synergistic connections between clinical practice and organizational imperatives to decrease unnecessary utilization and healthcare costs.

PURPOSE: Social work plays a marginal role in opposing the trend of mass incarceration and high rates of recidivism, and social work education offers limited opportunities for students to specialize in working with people who are currently or were previously incarcerated. How to train students of social work to work against mass-incarceration is still challenging. METHODS: The authors devised and implemented an in-school social service agency devoted to working with people pre and post release from a prison system. The agency is a field practicum setting where interested students study and practice reentry work. In this article, the authors describe and assess the educational merit of this in-school agency. RESULTS: Findings from surveys of students and alumni suggest that the program attained its educational goals of connecting classroom education to practice experience and training students for careers in the criminal justice system. The authors also discuss pending challenges. DISCUSSION: The experience of the Goldring Reentry Initiative suggests that by developing their own social work agencies, the authors may be able to heighten their students educational experience and expand their contribution to social work practice broadly.

Individuals and organizations develop strategies that facilitate or promote training in order to meet the demands imposed by technological progress and socio-political changes. However, there are methodological problems concerning the effects of such strategies which must be considered. Gaps persist on how to overcome those issues. To address this need, this study presents a review of Brazilian production in the training research area, focusing on the impact on work. Among 85 Brazilian articles, 24 research reports with this focus were identified, and were analyzed according to the standards used in international reviews. Results indicated several tendencies, such as a higher use of amplitude than of depth measures, and simultaneous data gathering of predictive and outcome variables. Some methodological issues were suggested for progress in this area, such as research studies with experimental designs and the multilevel approach.


Indivíduos e organizações desenvolvem estratégias que facilitam ou promovem o treinamento, visando atender as demandas impostas pelo progresso tecnológico e mudanças sociopolíticas. Contudo, há questões metodológicas relacionadas aos efeitos de tais estratégias que devem ser consideradas. Persistem lacunas em como superar essas questões. Para atender a essa necessidade, este artigo apresenta uma revisão da produção brasileira em estudos na área de treinamento, focando em impacto no trabalho. Entre 85 artigos brasileiros, 24 relatos de pesquisa com esse foco foram identificados, os quais foram analisados de acordo com os padrões usados na literatura internacional. Os resultados indicaram algumas tendências, como um maior uso de medida em amplitude do que em profundidade e obtenção simultânea de dados relativos às variáveis preditivas e critério. Para o avanço nessa área, algumas questões metodológicas foram sugeridas, como pesquisas com delineamentos experimentais e a abordagem multinível.


Individuos y organizaciones desarrollan estrategias que facilitan o promueven el entrenamiento, para satisfacer las demandas impuestas por los avances tecnológicos y cambios socio-políticos. Hay, sim embargo, cuestiones metodológicas relacionadas con los efectos de tales estrategias que se deben tener en cuenta. Persisten lagunas sobre cómo superar esas cuestiones. Con vistas a atender a esta necesidad, el presente estudio presenta una revisión de la producción brasileña en estudios en el área de entrenamiento, centrándose en los efectos del impacto en el trabajo. Fueron identificados 24 relatos de investigación con este enfoque, entre 85 artículos brasileños analizados, los cuales se estudiaron según criterios de revisión internacional. Los resultados indicaron algunas tendencias, tales como un mayor uso de medidas de amplitud que de profundidad y obtención simultánea de datos relativas a las variables predictivas y de criterio. Para el avance en esa área, algunas cuestiones metodológicas fueron sugeridas, tales como investigaciones con delineamientos experimentales y con enfoque multinivel.

Métodos: se realizó, desde un enfoque metodológico mixto y empleándose métodos empíricos y de evaluación de información o procesamiento de datos, una investigación proyectiva en la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de Villa Clara entre enero y septiembre de 2015; la misma abarcó un primer momento de caracterización de necesidades y un segundo momento de evaluación a través del criterio de expertos del resultado científico pedagógico diseñado. Resultados: permitieron definir la concepción científica del sistema propuesto en respuesta a la estructura formativa del modo de actuación integral del médico general a egresar en la educación superior cubana, así como en lo referido a la organización de las exigencias de aprendizaje en proyectos y basado en problemas y casos. Conclusiones: se estableció que un sistema de tareas docentes para la formación laboral en atención médica integral desde la asignatura Psicología I debe integrar, como elementos estructurales que actualizan los fundamentos teóricos del sistema propuesto, los componentes funcionales de fundamentación, interpretación y aplicación(AU)

Conclusions: A system of teaching tasks for the work training in comprehensive health care from the subject Psychology I was established to be integrated by the fundamental, interpreting and application functional components, as these are the structural elements that update the theoretical fundamentals of the proposed system(AU)

A presente pesquisa objetiva testar um modelo de avaliação de um treinamento a distância, mediado por intranet,em ambiente corporativo, e foi realizada em duas etapas. A primeira visa construir e verificar evidências de validade do instrumento de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho em Profundidade. A Etapa 2 identifica variáveis preditoras de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho, em profundidade e amplitude. O curso avaliado foi o Crédito Pessoa Física, oferecido pelo Banco do Brasil para seus funcionários. Foram aplicados quatro questionários - Estratégias de Aprendizagem, Suporte à Aplicação do Treinamento, Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho (profundidade e amplitude) - em 541 funcionários. Foram realizadas análises de componentes principais, fatoriais e de consistência interna, bem como de regressão múltipla padrão e stepwise. Os resultados indicaram que a escala contém 14 itens (α = 0,96, cargas fatoriais entre 0,55 e 0,91) e que o participante que percebeu maior suporte à aplicação do treinamento e utilizou com mais frequência as estratégias de aprendizagem foi também aquele que relatou maior ocorrência de impacto do treinamento no trabalho, em profundidade e amplitude. Contudo, o perfil dos respondentes precisa ser comparado com o perfil da população treinada, visando à avaliação dos limites e possibilidades de generalização dos achados.


The aim of this research was to test an evaluation model of distance learning training mediated by intranet, in a corporate environment, which was accomplished in two steps. The first was to construct and check the evidence of validity of the instrument "Work Training Impact in Depth." The second identified predictors of Work Training Impact in depth and breadth. The course "Individual Credit," offered by Bank of Brazil for its employees, was evaluated. Four questionnaires - Learning Strategies, Support for Implementation of Training, Work Training Impact (depth and breadth) - were sent to 541 employees. Principal component analysis, factor analysis, and internal consistency analysis were run, as well as standard and stepwise multiple regression. The results indicate that the scale contains 14 items (α = 0.96, factor loadings between 0.55 and 0.91) and that the participant who perceived greater support for the implementation of training, and used learning strategies more frequently, also reported a higher incidence of Work Training Impact, in depth and breadth. However, the profile of respondents should be compared with the trained population profile in order to evaluate the limits and possibilities of generalization of the findings.

A presente pesquisa objetiva testar um modelo de avaliação de um treinamento a distância, mediado por intranet,em ambiente corporativo, e foi realizada em duas etapas. A primeira visa construir e verificar evidências de validade do instrumento de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho em Profundidade. A Etapa 2 identifica variáveis preditoras de Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho, em profundidade e amplitude. O curso avaliado foi o Crédito Pessoa Física, oferecido pelo Banco do Brasil para seus funcionários. Foram aplicados quatro questionários - Estratégias de Aprendizagem, Suporte à Aplicação do Treinamento, Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho (profundidade e amplitude) - em 541 funcionários. Discute-se a qualidade dos instrumentos de medida existentes, bem como o relacionamento entre variáveis de interesse em TD&E. As considerações finais da análise destacam a importância de investigar as características da clientela e dos treinamentos, as reações e aprendizagem dos treinandos e as condições necessárias à expressão das competências no ambiente de trabalho do egresso, seja ele corporativo ou aberto.

Thus it is necessary to understand the learning transfer processes in different professional and corporate environments. Based on the foreign and national literature of Organizational Psychology and TD&E from the past 20 years, this paper aims to contribute to the field of instructional systems evaluation, to provide a critical literature analysis of Training Transfer and Work Training Impact, discussing concepts, definitions, and measures, and presenting research results. It discusses the quality of existing instruments and the relationship between variables of interest in TD&E. The conclusions of the analysis suggest the importance of investigating client and training characteristics, trainee learning and reactions, and the necessary conditions for the expression of skills in the work environment of egress, whether corporate or open.
