Increasingly frequent intense rainfall events have caused flood disasters of metro systems worldwide. Flood management based on flood resilience is a novel strategy for dealing with floods. Nevertheless, limited research has been conducted on the correlation between metro systems and flood resilience. In this study, an index system-based framework is proposed to evaluate the flood resilience of metro station entrances, the selected indices are multidimensional, emcompassing external environment, entrance structure, socio-economic, and post-disaster response factors. The flood resilience assessment of metro station entrances is carried out via a case study of the Donghaochong Basin, Guangzhou, China. The pressure-state-response (PSR) model is used to establish the index system for the assessment of the flood resilience. Indices of inundation at the entrance sites are simulated and extracted using the InfoWorks ICM model. Two rainfall scenarios are chosen to simulate inundation, and the resilience results of metro station entrances in each scenario are compared. The results suggest that in the 200-year (200a) return period scenario, 70% of the entrances are at the high and highest resilience levels, whereas in the Zhengzhou "720" scenario, the proportion of that is 43.33%. The resilience of metro station entrances is significantly reduced under the higher rainfall scenario. However, factors unrelated to rainfall are found to mitigate the extent to which total resilience is reduced. Before and during a flood disaster, the indices indicate the resistance and adaptability of metro entrances to the disaster. After a flood disaster, they indicate the ability of entrances to recover to regular functioning. Specific steps should be implemented before and after a disaster to effectively enhance the flood resilience of metro entrances. This study provides valuable insights into enhancing the pertinence and effectiveness of flood disaster management at metro station entrances, and reducing flood damage to metro systems.

A total of 18 metal elements in ambient PM2.5 in Zhengzhou were continuously determined using an online heavy metal observation instrument in January and April, 2021, and the changes in element concentrations were analyzed. Metal elements were traced via enrichment factors, positive matrix factorization (PMF), and a characteristic radar chart. The US EPA health risk assessment model was used to assess the health risks of heavy metals, and the backward trajectory method and the concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) method were used to evaluate the potential source regions of health risks. The results showed that the element concentrations were higher in spring, and the sum of Fe, Ca, Si, and Al concentrations accounted for 89.8% and 87.5% of the total element concentrations in winter and spring, respectively. Cd was enriched significantly, which was related to human activities. The concentrations of Pb, Se, Zn, Ni, Sb, and K in winter and Cr, Ni, Fe, Mn, V, Ba, Ca, K, Si, and Al in spring increased with the increasing pollution level. The results of PMF and the characteristic radar chart showed that the main sources of metal elements in winter and spring were industry, crust, motor vehicles, and mixed combustion, with industry and mixed combustion pollution occurring more often in winter and crust pollution occurring more often in spring. Significant non-carcinogenic risks existed in both winter and spring with more severe health risks in winter, and Mn caused significant non-carcinogenic risks. The health risks in winter were mainly influenced by Zhengzhou and surrounding cities and long-distance transport in the northwest, and the health risks in spring were mainly influenced by Zhengzhou and surrounding cities.

In order to study the pollution characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), continuous monitoring of VOCs in two pollution processes was conducted in June and December 2021 in Zhengzhou. Combined with meteorological conditions, the pollution characteristics, source contributions, and reactivity of VOCs in winter and summer were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the volume fraction of atmospheric VOCs in two episodes were (27.92±12.68)×10-9 and (24.30±5.93)×10-9, respectively. The volume fraction of atmospheric VOCs in the haze pollution process in winter was larger than that in the ozone pollution process in summer. The analysis results of winter sources were as follows: industrial source (27.0%), motor vehicle source (22.5%), combustion source (20.1%), solvent use source (16.3%), and oil and gas volatilization source (14.1%). The analysis results of summer sources were as follows: motor vehicle source (24.8%), industrial source (24.1%), solvent source (17.4%), oil and gas volatilization source (14.2%), combustion source (11.2%), and plant source (8.4%). The results of the smog production model showed that the proportion of days in the synergistic control zone of VOCs during the two pollution processes in summer (66.7%) was smaller than that in winter (100.0%). The secondary reaction activity results showed that the average ·OH loss rate (L·OH) values in winter and summer were 4.12 s-1 and 4.75 s-1, respectively. The average ozone formation potential (OFP) values in summer were 108.36 µg·m-3. The olefins were dominant in the top ten species due to L·OH and OFP contributions in summer. The total SOAFP values in winter in Zhengzhou were 54.38 µg·m-3. Among the top ten species contributing to SOAFP in winter, nine were aromatic hydrocarbons.

The development of urbanization and the establishment of metropolitan areas causes the urban heat island to cross the original single-city scale and form a regional heat island (RHI) with a larger influence range. Due to the decreasing distance between cities, there is an urgent need to reevaluate RHI for urban agglomerations, considering all cities instead of a conventional single-city perspective. The impact of climatic conditions and human factors on heat islands still lacks a general method and framework for systematic evaluation. Therefore, we used land and night light data as background conditions to study the diurnal and seasonal changes of heat islands in the Zhengzhou metropolitan area, China. Pearson correlation analysis and random forest regression analysis were then used to explore the influence of climatic conditions and human factors on RHI and its internal relationship. We found that the daytime RHI had strong spatial heterogeneity and seasonal differences from 2001 to 2020. The daytime RHI was stronger than nighttime in spring, summer, and autumn, and the nighttime RHI was stronger than daytime in winter. From spring to winter, RHI increased first and then decreased during the daytime, while the opposite was observed at night. In this study, temperature has a greater effect on daytime RHI; CO2 and NL have a greater effect on nighttime RHI. There was strong spatial heterogeneity in the effects of climatic conditions and human factors on the RHI, with climatic conditions contributing more to the daytime RHI in the northern mountainous areas, while human factors had a greater impact on the nighttime RHI in the main urban areas of each location. The results of this study highlight more targeted and informed strategies for RHI mitigation in the Zhengzhou metropolitan area and provide helpful insights into RHI evaluation in other urban agglomerations.

As one of the most important transportation hubs and industrial bases in China, Zhengzhou has suffered from serious PM2.5 pollution for a long time. However, the investigation of contamination status and possible exposure risks of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in PM2.5 from Zhengzhou is rare. In this work, a comprehensive study of pollution levels, seasonal variations, sources, and potential health risks of PM2.5-bound EPFRs in Zhengzhou was conducted for the first time. The atmospheric concentrations of EPFRs in PM2.5 from Zhengzhou ranged from 1.732 × 1012 spin m-3 to 7.182 × 1014 spin m-3 between 2019 and 2020. Relatively serious contamination was noticed in winter and spring. Primary fossil fuel combustion and Fe-mediated secondary formation were apportioned as possible sources of PM2.5-bound EPFRs in Zhengzhou. Moreover, to avert the bias of the toxicity assessment induced by utilization of incompletely extracted EPFRs from sample filter, simulatively generated EPFRs were applied to toxicological evaluations (cell viability and reactive oxygen species assays). Corresponding experimental dosages were based on the estimated adults' annual exposure amounts of EPFRs in real PM2.5 samples. The results elucidated that EPFRs might cause growth inhibition and oxidative stress of human lung cells, suggesting the possible exposure-induced health concerns for local people in Zhengzhou. This study provides practical information of real contamination status of PM2.5-bound EPFRs in Zhengzhou, which is favorable to local air pollution control and reduction of exposure risks on public health in central China.

Groundwater vulnerability can partially reflect the possibility of groundwater contamination, which is crucial for ensuring human health and a good ecological environment. The current study seeks to assess the groundwater vulnerability of Zhengzhou City by adopting an amended version of the traditional DRASTIC model, i.e., the DRASTICL model, which incorporates land use type indicators. More specifically, the AHP-DRASTICL, entropy-DRASTICL, and AE-DRASTICL models were established by optimizing weights using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy weight method. The evaluation results for these five models were divided into five levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high. Using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, the nitrate concentration was used to verify the groundwater vulnerability assessment results. The AE-DRASTICL model was found to perform the best, with a Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.78. However, the AHP and entropy weight method effectively improved the accuracy of vulnerability assessment results, making it more suitable for the study area. This study provides important insights to inform the design of strategies to protect groundwater in Zhengzhou.

Large-scale disasters can disproportionately impact different population groups, causing prominent disparity and inequality, especially for the vulnerable and marginalized. Here, we investigate the resilience of human mobility under the disturbance of the unprecedented '720' Zhengzhou flood in China in 2021 using records of 1.32 billion mobile phone signaling generated by 4.35 million people. We find that although pluvial floods can trigger mobility reductions, the overall structural dynamics of mobility networks remain relatively stable. We also find that the low levels of mobility resilience in female, adolescent and older adult groups are mainly due to their insufficient capabilities to maintain business-as-usual travel frequency during the flood. Most importantly, we reveal three types of counter-intuitive, yet widely existing, resilience patterns of human mobility (namely, 'reverse bathtub', 'ever-increasing' and 'ever-decreasing' patterns), and demonstrate a universal mechanism of disaster-avoidance response by further corroborating that those abnormal resilience patterns are not associated with people's gender or age. In view of the common association between travel behaviors and travelers' socio-demographic characteristics, our findings provide a caveat for scholars when disclosing disparities in human travel behaviors during flood-induced emergencies.

Studying the comprehensive performance of industrial carbon emission has profound significance for improving carbon allowance allocation scheme and achieving the carbon neutrality target. The paper selects 181 enterprises in Zhengzhou as the case, a comprehensive carbon emission performance indicator system and a carbon allowance allocation model were established, and compared with other allocation schemes (historical/baseline method). The results showed that the overall differences in the comprehensive performance evaluation indicator of carbon emissions in typical industries in Zhengzhou were obvious, and there was a correlation with the characteristics of industrial production activities. The overall emission reduction of Zhengzhou was 244.33×103t, and the emission reduction ratio was 7.94% by simulating carbon allowance allocation under the comprehensive performance. The carbon allowance allocation method based on the comprehensive performance has the strongest restraint on the "high emission, low performance" industry, which is more equitable and more conducive to carbon emission reduction. In the future, it will be recommended to give full play to the leading role of the government, implement industrial carbon allowance allocation based on the comprehensive performance evaluation of carbon emissions, to achieve multi-objectives of resource conservation, environmental pollution abatement, and carbon reduction.

Scientifically evaluating ecological water use efficiency (EWUE) is an effective means to regulate the level of ecological water use in a country or a region. It is also a basic work to achieve high-efficiency use of ecological water under the current situation of water shortage. However, there were few researches on EWUE, and existing studies only focus on eco-environmental benefits generated by ecological water, without considering its impact on economy and society. An emergy evaluation method for EWUE based on comprehensive benefits was proposed in this paper innovatively. Considering the impact of ecological water use on society, economy, and eco-environment, the concept of EWUE could be defined. Then, comprehensive benefits of ecological water use (CBEW) were quantified by emergy method, and EWUE was evaluated by the comprehensive benefits of unit ecological water use. Taking Zhengzhou City as an example for calculation, from 2011 to 2020, CBEW increased from 5.20 × 1019 sej to 6.72 × 1020 sej, showing an overall upward trend, and EWUE rose from 2.71 × 1011 sej/m3 (1.27ï¿¥/m3) to 1.32 × 1012 sej/m3 (8.10ï¿¥/m3) with fluctuation. It showed that Zhengzhou City has paid enough attention to the allocation of ecological water and EWUE at a high level. The method proposed in this paper provides a new idea to evaluate EWUE scientifically, and the results can provide guidance to allocate ecological water resources to achieve sustainable development.

As a fundamental subject of medical education, human anatomy plays a critical role in the development of medical science. However, because of multiple factors including cultural conservativism and limited social understanding, China is facing a particularly severe shortage of bodies donated for anatomy education. Zhengzhou University (ZZU) has continued to uphold whole-body dissection as the preferred method for medical students to learn anatomy. For this study, records of registered individuals (who have signed a body donation agreement) and donors (whose bodies have been received) from 2001 to 2020 were collected and analyzed. The aim of this study was to explore the factors influencing the body donation program (BDP) at ZZU, and then reinforce the social understanding for the BDP. The results showed a significant increase in the numbers of both registered individuals and donors since 2015, which is the year the publicity and commemoration in honor of donors were increased. There were no significant differences between the biological male and female sexes in the registered individuals, but the number of male donors (12.85 ± 10.86, per year) was significantly higher than that of female donors (4.75 ± 4.53, per year). The current donor profile at ZZU is male in his 60/70s, while the profile of registered individuals is male or female in their 60s. Strengthening the publicity and commemoration in honor of donors may contribute to the implementation of BDPs.

From July 2020 to June 2021, monthly offline sampling of atmospheric VOCs was carried out and analyzed at three urban sites and one suburban site in Zhengzhou. Then, the volume fraction levels, composition characteristics, reactivity, and source apportionment of atmospheric VOCs were discussed. The results showed that the volume fraction of atmospheric VOCs in Zhengzhou was (37.50±14.30)×10-9 during the sampling period, and the proportion of components was represented by alkanes (33%)>OVOCs (24%)>halogenated hydrocarbons (23%)>aromatic hydrocarbons (8%)>alkenes (7%)>alkynes (4%)>sulfides (1%). The seasonal variation characteristics were winter>autumn>summer>spring, and the monthly average value of VOCs had the highest value in January and the lowest value in May; the spatial variation characteristics were Zhengzhou University (ZD)>Jiancezhan (JCZ)>Jingkaiqu (JKQ)>Gangli Reservoir (GLR). The average·OH loss rate (L·OH) was 4.24 s-1, and the average ozone formation potential (OFP) was 172.27 µg·m-3; the top ten species of L·OH and OFP at each site and in each season were dominated by alkenes, OVOCs, and aromatic hydrocarbons. The results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) showed that the main sources of VOCs were vehicle emissions (28%), solvent utilization (24%), industrial emissions (24%), and oil and gas volatilization (19%) and plant emissions (5%).

Temperature is an important indicator of climate change. With the gradual increase of global warming, a well-chosen model can improve the accuracy of temperature prediction. It is of great significance and value for future disaster prevention and mitigation and economic development. Monthly temperature is influenced by solar activity, monsoon, and other factors, with significant uncertainty, ambiguity, and randomness. A coupled CEEMD-BiLSTM temperature model is constructed based on the good decomposition-reconstruction characteristics of CEEMD for uncertain time series and the advantages of BiLSTM for solving stochastic prediction, and it is applied to the prediction of monthly temperature in Zhengzhou City. The results show that the minimum relative error of the coupled CEEMD-BiLSTM model is 0.01%, the maximum relative error is 0.99%, and the average relative error is 0.22%, and the prediction accuracy of this coupled model for monthly temperature in Zhengzhou is higher than that of the CEEMD-LSTM model, EEMD-BiLSTM model, and BP neural network model, with better stability and adaptability.

Metropolitan areas are the main spatial units sustaining development. Investigating internal factor changes in metropolitan areas are of great significance for improving the quality of development in these areas. As an emerging national central city of China, Zhengzhou has experienced rapid urban expansion and urbanization. In this study, principal component analysis and the model and Geodetector model were used to comprehensively analyze the influencing factors of land use change in Zhengzhou from 1980 to 2015. Based on the CA-Markov model, we improved the accuracy of multi-criteria evaluation of suitability factors and simulated land use change in 2015. The results show that land use conversions in the study area between 1980 and 2015 were frequent, with the areas of farmland, woodland, grassland, water, and unused land decreasing by 5.00%, 17.12%, 21.59%, 18.31%, and 94.48%, respectively, while construction land increased by 53.61%. The key influences on land use change are the urbanization and growth of residential or non-agricultural populations. In 2035, the area of farmland in the study area will decrease by 11.09% compared with that in 2015 and construction land will increase by 38.94%, while the area of other land use types will not significantly change. Zhengzhou, as the center city, forms a diamond-shaped core development area of Zhengzhou-Kaifeng-Xinxiang-Jiaozuo, while Xuchang is considered an independent sub-center uniting the surrounding cities for expansion. With its radiation power of unipolar core development for many years and the developmental momentum of Zhengzhou-Kaifeng integration, Zhengzhou city jointly drives the economic development of the surrounding cities. The protection of farmland and control of the expansion of construction land are the major challenges for the Zhengzhou metropolitan area to achieve sustainable development.

The site of Zhengzhou Shang City (ca. 1509-1315 cal. BC) was the capital of the early Shang Dynasty in China. Archaeological excavations have unearthed a ditch containing approximately one hundred unusual dead human skulls in the rammed-earth foundations of the palace area. The identity and origin of the skulls have long been disputed. In this work, strontium, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses were carried out on 11 human skulls and 1 tooth from the ditch, as well as on 11 human bones, 11 human teeth from the ordinary tombs and 10 pig teeth from the Zhengzhou Shang City site. We determined that, in Zhengzhou Shang City, the local strontium isotope ratio ranges from 0.711606 to 0.711884, and ordinary inhabitants consumed mainly C4 plants supplemented by C3 plants. Moreover, humans buried in the ditch have 87Sr/86Sr values from 0.711335 to 0.711741 and consumed only C4 plants. Combining the isotopic data with the archaeological and cultural context, it is concluded that the unusual human skulls in the ditch are most likely those of prisoners of war captured by the central forces conquering the Xiaomintun area of Anyang in the early Shang Dynasty. The results provide valuable insight into the history of violence and military warfare in the early Chinese dynasty.

The acceleration of urbanization and climate change has increasingly impacted the health level of urban dual water cycles. In order to accurately evaluate the health status of urban water cycles, the evaluation system covers four standard layers of water ecology, water abundance, water quality and water use, including 19 basic indicators such as water storage change and annual average precipitation. Three-scale AHP and EFAST algorithms are adopted to set the criterion and index layer weights. Water-cycle health assessment models are based on the improved TOPSIS model. The model evaluated Zhengzhou's water cycle health from 2011 to 2021. We compared the TOPSIS model and FCE method to ensure the scientific objectivity of the evaluation results. The evaluation results indicated that the water cycle in Zhengzhou City improved annually, and the relative progress in 2020 was 0.567 in a sub-health state. The eco-environmental water demand, green coverage rate of the built district, water resources amount, and industry's water consumption per unit of value added (CNY 10,000) were the major obstacles. These four factors have preponderantly influenced Zhengzhou City's water cycle health. Our research results provide scientific reference for Zhengzhou to achieve a healthy urban water cycle and regional sustainable development.

Rapid urbanization aggravates issues related to protection and optimization of the ecological environment. Constructing an ecological network system, including ecological values in planning, and using landscape effects efficiently are important for adjusting regional ecological space and promoting local sustainable development. Land use data from eight time points between 1980 and 2020 in the Zhengzhou Metropolitan Area were used to identify the local ecological sources, corridors and nodes and to identify an ecological network with high structural integrity. The study used the FLUS, MSPA, MCR, and gravity models, hydrological analysis, and network structure evaluation by applying tools such as ArcGIS, Guidos Toolbox and Conefor. The results indicated that: (1) among the nine major ecological sources, those in the Yellow River Basin connected the large-scale sources in the east and west of the network, and the rest were located in the northeast, southeast and southwest of the research area, semi-enclosing the main urban area of Zhengzhou. (2) There were 163 least-cost paths and 58 ecological corridors, mainly distributed along the Yellow River Basin. (3) There were 70 ecological nodes, divided into 10 strategic, 27 natural ecological and 33 artificial environment nodes, distributed in key locations such as the core of each source and the intersection of corridors. (4) The ecological network included all the landscape elements in the research area and connected the main ecological substrates in a semi-enclosing network structure with one horizontal and two vertical corridors and four clusters.

The COVID-19 lockdown was a typical occurrence of extreme emission reduction, which presented an opportunity to study the influence of control measures on particulate matter. Observations were conducted from January 16 to 31, 2020 using online observation instruments to investigate the characteristics of PM2.5 concentration, particle size distribution, chemical composition, source, and transport before (January 16-23, 2020) and during (January 24-31, 2020) the COVID-19 lockdown in Zhengzhou. The results showed that the atmospheric PM2.5 concentration decreased by 4.8% during the control period compared with that before the control in Zhengzhou. The particle size distribution characteristics indicated that there was a significant decrease in the mass concentration and number concentration of particles in the size range of 0.06 to 1.6 µm during the control period. The chemical composition characteristics of PM2.5 showed that secondary inorganic ions (sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) were the dominant component of PM2.5, and the significant increase in PM2.5 was mainly owing to the decrease in NO3- concentration during the control period. The main sources of PM2.5 identified by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were secondary sources, combustion sources, vehicle sources, industrial sources, and dust sources. The emissions from vehicle sources, industrial sources, and dust sources decreased significantly during the control period. The results of analyses using the backward trajectory method and potential source contribution factor method indicated that the effects of transport from surrounding areas on PM2.5 concentration decreased during the control period. In summary, vehicle and industrial sources should be continuously controlled, and regional combined prevention and control should be strengthened in the future in Zhengzhou.

Research on environmental pollution and public health has aroused increasing concern from international scholars; particularly, environmental hazards are among the important issues in China, focusing public attention on significant health risks. However, there are few studies concentrated on how perceived environmental hazards are characterized by spatial variation and on the impact of these risks on residents' health. Based on a large-scale survey of Zhengzhou City in 2020, we investigated how the self-rated health of residents and the environmental hazards perceived by them were spatially inequal at a fine (subdistrict) scale in Zhengzhou City, China, and examined the relationship among self-rated health, environmental hazards, and geographical context. The Getis-Ord Gi* method was applied to explore the spatially dependent contextual (neighborhood) effect on environmental health inequality, and the ordered multivariate logistic regression method was used to examine the correlative factors with environmental hazards, geographical context, and health inequality. The results reveal that self-rated health and environmental hazards were disproportionately distributed across the whole city and that these distributions showed certain spatial cluster characteristics. The hot spot clusters of self-rated health had favorable environmental quality where the hot spot clusters of environmental hazards were located and vice versa. In addition, health inequality was evident and was related to gender, income level, educational attainment, and housing area of residents, and the inequalities of environmental hazards existed with respect to income and housing area. Meanwhile, environmental risk inequalities associated with the social vulnerability of residents (the poor and those with low educational attainment) were obvious, with those residents experiencing a disproportionately high exposure to environmental hazards and reporting bad health conditions. The role of the geographical context (subdistrict location feature) also helps to explain the spatial distribution of health and environmental inequalities. Residents with better exposure to green coverage generally reported higher levels of self-rated health condition. In addition, the geographical location of the subdistrict also had a significant impact on the difference in residents' self-rated health status. The purpose of this study is to provide reference for policy makers to optimize the spatial pattern of urban public services and improve public health and environmental quality at a fine scale.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has rapidly spread and poses a major threat to public health worldwide. The whole genome sequencing plays a crucial role in virus surveillance and evolutionary analysis. In this study, five genome sequences of SARS-CoV-2 were obtained from nasopharyngeal swab samples from Zhengzhou, China. Following RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis, multiplex PCR was performed with two primer pools to produce the overlapped amplicons of ~1,200 bp. The viral genomes were obtained with 96% coverage using nanopore sequencing. Forty-five missense nucleotide mutations were identified; out of these, 5 mutations located at Nsp2, Nsp3, Nsp14, and ORF10 genes occurred with a <0.1% frequency in the global dataset. On the basis of mutation profiles, five genomes were clustered into two sublineages (B.1.617.2 and AY.31) or subclades (21A and 21I). The phylogenetic analysis of viral genomes from several regions of China and Myanmar revealed that five patients had different viral transmission chains. Taken together, we established a nanopore sequencing platform for genetic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and identified the variants circulating in Zhengzhou during August 2021. Our study provided crucial support for government policymaking and prevention and control of COVID-19.

OBJECTIVE: To perform an epidemiological investigation on a case with visceral leishmaniasis in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, and to identify the source of infection, so as to illustrate the transmission chain and assess the risk of local leishmaniasis transmission. METHODS: The medical data were collected from a case with visceral leishmaniasis in Zhengzhou City, and the patient's bone marrow smears were detected by microscopy. Serum anti-Leishmania antibody test and PCR assay were performed among high-risk residents and all dogs in the village where the patient lived. Sandflies were captured using light traps and artificial traps, and the captured female Phlebotomus chinensis was subjected to PCR assay. The internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) gene was amplified with a nested PCR assay using the genomic DNA extracted from visceral leishmaniasis patients, positive dogs and sandflies, and the sequences were aligned with those download from NCBI. In addition, a phylogenetic tree was created based on the ITS1 gene. RESULTS: The visceral leishmaniasis patient had recurrent irregular fever, reduced complete blood counts, low hemoglobin, and a large number of Leishmania amastigotes in bone marrow smears, and was therefore diagnosed as visceral leishmaniasis. Both rk39 rapid diagnostic test and PCR assay tested negative among 324 residents living neighboring the patient's residence, while 21.39% (43/201) dogs were positive for rk39 rapid diagnostic test and 13.93% (28/201) positive for PCR assay. There were 17 female Ph. chinensis tested positive for Leishmania (0.82%) by PCR assay, and the ITS gene sequences from visceral leishmaniasis patients, positive dogs and sandflies shared a 100% homology with L. infantum. The Leishmania species was therefore characterized as L. infantum. CONCLUSIONS: L. infantum infection occurs in visceral leishmaniasis patients, dogs and sandflies in Zhengzhou City, indicating a complete transmission chain and a high transmission risk of visceral leishmaniasis by L. infantum. Intensified control measures are required to prevent local transmission of leishmaniasis in Zhengzhou City.
