RESUMO

The seabed of the Antarctic continental shelf hosts most of Antarctica's known species, including taxa considered indicative of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs). Nonetheless, the potential impact of climatic and environmental change, including marine icescape transition, on Antarctic shelf zoobenthos, and their blue carbon-associated function, is still poorly characterised. To help narrow knowledge gaps, four continental shelf study areas, spanning a southern polar gradient, were investigated for zoobenthic (principally epi-faunal) carbon storage (a component of blue carbon), and potential environmental influences, employing a functional group approach. Zoobenthic carbon storage was highest at the two southernmost study areas (with a mean estimate of 41.6 versus 7.2 g C m-2) and, at each study area, increased with morphotaxa richness, overall faunal density, and VME indicator density. Functional group mean carbon content varied with study area, as did each group's percentage contribution to carbon storage and faunal density. Of the environmental variables explored, sea-ice cover and primary production, both likely to be strongly impacted by climate change, featured in variable subsets most highly correlating with assemblage and carbon storage (by functional groups) structures. The study findings can underpin biodiversity- and climate-considerate marine spatial planning and conservation measures in the Southern Ocean.

The flow of carbon from atmosphere to sediment fauna and sediments reduces atmospheric CO2, which in turn reduces warming. Here, during the Changing Arctic Ocean Seafloor programme, we use comparable methods to those used in the Antarctic (vertical, calibrated camera drops and trawl-collected specimens) to calculate the standing stock of zoobenthic carbon throughout the Barents Sea. The highest numbers of morphotypes, functional groups and individuals were found in the northernmost sites (80-81.3° N, 29-30° E). Ordination (non-metric multidimensional scaling) suggested a cline of faunal transition from south to north. The functional group dominance differed across all six sites, despite all being apparently similar muds. Of the environmental variables we measured, only water current speed could significantly explain any of our spatial carbon differences. We found no obvious relationship with sea ice loss and thus no evidence of Arctic blue carbon-climate feedback. Blue carbon in the Barents Sea can be comparable with the highest levels in Antarctic shelf sediments. Superficial soft sediment resuspension and partial fragmentation of high density opportunistic macroalgal mats were investigated by boat to determine the impact on zoobenthic assemblages in a eutrophic Mediterranean lagoon. Sediment resuspension was used to oxidise superficial organic sediments as a method to counteract the effects of eutrophication. Likewise, artificial decay of macroalgal mat was calculated to reduce a permanent source of sediment organic matter. An area of 9ha was disturbed (zone D) and two other areas of the same size were left undisturbed (zones U). We measured chemical-physical variables, estimated algal biomass and sedimentary organic matter, and conducted qualitative and quantitative determinations of the zoobenthic species detected in sediment and among algal mats. The results showed a constant major reduction in labile organic matter (LOM) and algal biomass in D, whereas values in U remained stable or increased. In the three zones, however, bare patches of lagoon bed increased in size, either by direct effect of the boats in D or by anaerobic decay of the algal mass in U. Zoobenthic assemblages in algal mats reduced the number of species in D, probably due to the sharp reduction in biomass, but remained stable in U, whereas in all three areas abundance increased. Sediment zoobenthic assemblages increased the number of species in D, as expected, due to drastic reduction in LOM, whereas values in U remained stable and again abundance increased in all three zones. In conclusion, we confirmed that reduction of sediment organic load enabled an increase in the number of species, while the algal mats proved to be an important substrate in the lagoon environment for zoobenthic assemblages, especially when mat alternated with bare intermat areas of lagoon bed. Sediment resuspension is confirmed as a management criterion for counteracting the effects of eutrophication and improving the biodiversity of zoobenthic assemblages in eutrophic lagoon environments.

Alterations in aquatic systems and changes in water levels, whether due to rains or dam-mediated control can cause changes in community structure, forcing the community to readjust to the new environment. This study tested the hypothesis that there is an increase in the richness and abundance of aquatic insects during the rainy season in the Serra da Mesa Reservoir, with the premise that increasing the reservoir level provides greater external material input and habitat diversity, and, therefore, conditions that promote colonization by more species. We used the paired t test to test the differences in richness, beta diversity, and abundance, and a Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) was performed to identify patterns in the community under study. Additionally, Pearson correlations were analyzed between the richness, abundance, and beta diversity and the level of the reservoir. We collected 35,028 aquatic insect larvae (9,513 in dry period and 25,515 in the rainy season), predominantly of the Chironomidae family, followed by orders Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, and Odonata. Among the 33 families collected, only 12 occurred in the dry season, while all occurred in the rainy season. These families are common in lentic environments, and the dominance of Chironomidae was associated with its fast colonization, their behavior of living at high densities and the great tolerance to low levels of oxygen in the environment. The hypothesis was confirmed, as the richness, beta diversity, and abundance were positively affected by the increase in water levels due to the rainy season, which most likely led to greater external material input, greater heterogeneity of habitat, and better conditions for colonization by several families.


Alterações nos sistemas aquáticos, bem como variações nos níveis da água, sejam devido a chuvas ou pelo controle exercido pela barragem podem provocar mudanças na estruturação das comunidades fazendo com que as mesmas sejam obrigadas a se readequar às novas características do ambiente. Este estudo testou a hipótese de que ocorre aumento na riqueza e abundância de insetos aquáticos na estação chuvosa no reservatório de Serra da Mesa com a premissa que o aumento do nível do reservatório proporciona maior entrada de material alóctone, maior diversidade de habitats e, consequentemente, condições para a colonização de mais espécies. Para testar as diferenças na riqueza, diversidade beta e abundância foi utilizado o test t pareado e, além disso, foi feita uma NMDS para identificar padrões na comunidade em estudo. Foram coletados 35.028 larvas de insetos aquáticos (9513 no período seco e 25.515 no período de cheia) com predominância da família Chironomidae seguida das famílias Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera e Odonata. Dentre as 33 famílias coletadas, apenas 12 ocorreram no período de seca, enquanto todas ocorreram no período chuvoso. Essas famílias são bastante encontradas em ambientes lênticos e a dominância de Chironomidae está associada ao seu rápido processo de colonização, ao seu comportamento de viver em altas densidades e sua grande tolerância a baixos teores de oxigênio no ambiente. A hipótese testada foi corroborada visto que a riqueza, a diversidade beta e a abundância de insetos aquáticos foram influenciadas positivamente pelo aumento do nível da água, decorrente do período chuvoso, que, provavelmente, propiciou uma maior entrada de material alóctone, maior heterogeneidade de habitat e melhores condições para a colonização das diversas famílias.

This paper presents a study on the macrobenthic community in the Salvia stream, a headwater stream that runs through a conserved Atlantic forest fragment in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, and identifies the environmental factors that most influence the community structure. Ten sampling sites were chosen, conducting each collection during the rainy season of 2010 and the dry season of 2011. At each site the macroinvertebrates were collected using a D net (0.250 mm mesh). Water samples were collected and taken to the laboratory to analyze Dissolved Oxygen, Conductivity, pH and Alkalinity. Water temperature, surface current speed and depth were measured at the site. Canonical Correspondence was used to analyze the effect of environmental factors on the macroinvertebrate community. All the environmental factors measured showed significant variation between seasons, showing the seasonality effects on the stream environment. Eighteen taxa were identified, with predominance of Palaemonidae (Decapoda) and Chironomidae (Diptera), respectively, during the rainy and dry season. The results showed that the macroinvertebrates were more correlated to pH, Alkalinity and Dissolved Oxygen, indicating that this ecosystem variation is mainly based on the organic matter decomposition process.


O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a comunidade macrobentônica do riacho da Salvia, um riacho de cabeceira que atravessa um fragmento conservado de floresta remanescente de Mata Atlântica, identificando os fatores ambientais que mais influenciam a estrutura da comunidade. Dez estações de coleta foram escolhidas, onde foram realizadas coletas durante a estação chuvosa de 2010 e da estação seca de 2011. Em cada estação os macroinvertebrados foram coletados utilizando uma rede d (malha de 0,250 mm). Amostras de água foram coletadas para analisar Oxigênio Dissolvido, Condutividade, pH e Alcalinidade em laboratório. Temperatura da água, Velocidade de corrente superficial e Profundidade foram medidas em campo. Para analisar a correlação entre os fatores ambientais e a comunidade de macroinvertebrados bentônica foi utilizada a análise de Correspondência Canônica. Todos os fatores ambientais medidos mostraram variação significativa entre a estação chuvosa e seca, mostrando os efeitos da sazonalidade no ambiente do riacho. Dezoito táxons foram identificados, com Palaemonidae (Decapoda) e Chironomidae (Diptera) dominando, respectivamente, durante as estações chuvosa e seca. Os resultados mostraram que os macroinvertebrados foram mais correlacionados ao pH, Alcalinidade e Oxigênio Dissolvido, indicando que as variações neste ecossistema são baseadas principalmente nos processo de decomposição da matéria orgânica.

O estudo foi realizado em diferentes ambientes da várzea do rio Ivinhema com o intuito de analisar a variação espacial e temporal da assembléia de invertebrados bentônicos, bem como sua relação com as variáveis físicas e químicas e o nível hidrométrico. Foram estudados quatro ambientes, o canal principal do rio, o canal Ipoitã, a lagoa Ventura (sem comunicação) e a lagoa dos Patos (com comunicação). As coletas foram realizadas trimestralmente de fevereiro a novembro de 2002. O sistema rio Ivinhema foi caracterizado por um regime de potamofase bimodal com intensidades moderadas e grandes amplitudes, permanecendo em potamofase 184 dias em 2001 e 67 dias em 2002. Foram observadas as variações espacial e temporal, quanto às variáveis físicas e químicas, sumarizadas em uma PCA. Dos 37 táxons registrados, Nematoda, Corbiculidae, Oligochaeta, Acari, Ostracoda e Chironomidae foram os mais abundantes, sendo as larvas de Chironomidae o táxon predominante no canal Ipoitã e na lagoa Ventura. Entretanto, a análise da estrutura da assembléia (CA) demonstrou que a assembléia bentônica do rio Ivinhema é dissimilar a das lagoas. A relação entre PCA e CA não foi significativa, indicando que no sistema Ivinhema há uma estrutura complexa e que a uniformidade espacial da densidade e temporal da assembléia bentônica deve-se à maior conectividade entre os ambientes.

Nematoda, Corbiculidae, Oligochaeta, Acari, Ostracoda and Chironomidae were the most abundant taxa registered and the larvae of Chironomidae were the most predominant in the Ivinhema main channel, Ipoitã channel and Ventura lake. Total density changed between months, but the analysis of the structure of the assembly (CA) showed that the benthic assembly of the Ivinhema main channel is dissimilar to the ponds. The relationship between PCA and CA was not significant, indicating that the Ivinhema system had a complex structure and that the spatial uniformity of density and temporal uniformity of benthic assemblage is due to the greater connectivity between the sites.
