RESUMO

Background: Both nutrition and inflammation are associated with depression, but previous studies have focused on individual factors. Here, we assessed the association between composite indices of nutrition and inflammation and depression. Methods: Adult participants selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2005 and 2018 were chosen. The exposure variable was the Advanced Lung Cancer Inflammation Index (ALI) integrating nutrition and inflammation, categorized into low, medium, and high groups. The outcome variable was depression assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). A multivariable logistic regression model was employed to evaluate the relationship between ALI and the risk of depression. Results: After extensive adjustment for covariates, in the overall population, participants with moderate and high levels of ALI had a decreased prevalence of depression compared to those with low ALI levels, with reductions of 17% (OR, 0.83; 95% CI: 0.72-0.97) and 23% (OR, 0.77; 95% CI: 0.66-0.91), respectively. Among females, participants with moderate and high ALI levels had a decreased prevalence of depression by 27% (OR, 0.73; 95% CI: 0.60-0.88) and 21% (OR, 0.79; 95% CI: 0.64-0.98), respectively, compared to those with low ALI levels, whereas no significant association was observed among males. Subgroup analyses based on females and males yielded consistent results. Conclusion: In this study, we observed a negative correlation between moderate to high levels of ALI and the prevalence of depression, along with gender differences. Specifically, in females, greater attention should be given to the nutritional and inflammatory status.

RESUMO

The study aimed to identify predictors of the intention to eat less meat and more plant-based foods, including attitudes towards eating meat, habitual meat eating, subjective norms, and self-identity. A cross-sectional study using CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interview) was conducted in a group of 1003 Polish adults in 2023. To measure the predictor variables, the following tools were used: Beliefs and Eating Habits Questionnaire (KomPAN), Meat Attachment Questionnaire (MAQ), and scales to measure subjective norms and self-identity. Logistic regression analysis was used to verify associations between independent variables, and the intentions to eat more plant-based food and less meat next year were treated as dependent variables. More respondents were willing to increase their consumption of plant-based foods rather than reduce their meat consumption. The intention to consume less meat and more plant foods was more prevalent among women, older people (only intention to reduce meat consumption), and better-educated people (only intention to increase plant food consumption). Habitual frequency of eating plant foods, negative feelings about meat, and environmentally oriented identities had a stimulating effect on the intention to eat more plant foods and less meat, while experiencing pleasure in eating meat had a limiting effect on the intention to eat more plant foods and less meat. In addition, the habitual frequency of meat consumption and subjective norms reduced the likelihood of eating less meat, while no predictive effect was observed for the intention to eat more plant foods. In conclusion, educational and promotional activities to raise awareness of the link between food consumption and the environment can have a strong impact on eating less meat and more plant-based food, even among those strongly accustomed to meat consumption.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: While there is research on protective factors against smartphone addiction (SA) and phubbing, which impact adolescents' physical, psychological, interpersonal, and academic well-being, focused studies on these issues among Thai Muslim students in Southern Thailand remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To bridge this gap, this research aimed to explore the influence of five family functioning factors-discipline, communication and problem-solving (CPS), relationship, emotional status, and family support-guided by family systems theory and the McMaster Model, on SA and phubbing. METHODS: Data from 825 Thai Muslim adolescent secondary school students (Female N = 459 (55.7%), Mage = 15.11 ± 1.78) across three southern Thai provinces were analyzed utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM). RESULTS: Significant connections were identified between family functioning factors, particularly emotional status and discipline, and SA, and their impact on phubbing behavior. SA was found to mediate the relationship between these two family factors and phubbing. Interestingly, a higher quality of family relationships was found to be associated with an increased risk of SA, while the other two family functions-CPS and family support-demonstrated no significant association with these digital behaviors. CONCLUSIONS: Despite its limitations, including a cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reports, the study underscores the importance of specific family functions in preventing and addressing adolescent SA and phubbing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a long-lasting physiological stress. As one of the main stressors, labor pain exists throughout the whole process. Childbirth self-efficacy is the confidence, or belief that they can manage pain during childbirth. This sense of self-efficacy determines how pregnant women deal with labor pain and enables them to regulate their behavior and actively deal with childbirth. However, the difference in pain sensitivity between single births (primiparas) and multiple births (multiparas) has rarely been investigated. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed at investigating self-efficacy, fear of childbirth, labor pain of primiparas and multiparas and exploring factors related to the perceived labor pain intensity of pregnant women. DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. SETTING(S): Labour and delivery in a large academic specialized hospital in Guangzhou, China. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 347 women, (182 primiparas and 165 multiparas) were enrolled in the data analysis. Pain was assessed before cervical dilatation (cervical dilatation ≤ 3 cm for the first delivery and ≤ 2 cm for the second delivery). METHOD: The general information of participants was obtained by questionnaire and obstetrical records of the subjects were obtained from the electronic medical records extracted from the electronic medical record system (EMRS). Childbirth self-efficacy, fear of childbirth (FOC) and labor pain were compared between primiparas and multiparas. Paired t-test, chi-square test, Mann-Whitney test, univariate and multivariate regression analysis were used to analyze labor pain between the two groups and investigate factors related perceived labor pain intensity. RESULTS: The total scores related to fear of childbirth, fetal health, self-control, and labor pain injury of multiparas were notably reduced compared with primiparas (all P < 0.05). The perceived labor pain intensity and duration of the first stage of labor was reduced in the multipara group compared with the primipara group. The childbirth control sense of the multipara was better than that of the primipara. The perceived labor pain intensity was negatively correlated with advanced age (age ≥ 35 years), self-efficacy score, family support, and education (all P < 0.05). In contrast, the perceived labor pain intensity was positively correlated with tension, severe fear of childbirth, and anxiety (P < 0.05). Self-efficacy, gravidity, delivery cognition, and fear of childbirth were independent risk factors for the perceived labor pain intensity in the latent period (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Fear of childbirth is a predictor of perceived labor pain intensity. The extent of labor pain (minimum and maximum) can be predicted by the level of fear the expectant mother has. During the latent phase of labor, self-efficacy, fear of childbirth and labor pain are different between primiparas and multiparas.

RESUMO

Background: Internet addiction poses a significant threat to the health of college students worldwide, but physical activity, as a highly safe and effective rehabilitative measure, has shown promise for alleviating this issue nowadays. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the mediating processes in this association remained unclear. This study aims to explore the impact of physical activity on internet addiction among college students and the mediating role of subjective well-being. Methods: A survey was conducted on 216 eligible college students using the physical activity level scale, the internet addiction test, and the subjective well-being scale. For data analysis, independent sample t-tests, correlation analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and mediating effect tests were in turn carried out in this work. Results: The study revealed noteworthy gender disparities in physical activity and internet addiction among college students (ß = -0.356, p < 0.01; ß = 0.140, p < 0.05). Compared to females, male students manifest elevated levels of physical activity and lower scores in internet addiction. Physical activity and subjective well-being exerted a significantly negative predictive influence on internet addiction (ß = -0.162, p < 0.05; ß = -0.508, p < 0.001). What's more, subjective well-being assumed a crucial mediating role in the relationship between physical activity and internet addiction, with the mediating effect accounting for 72.81% of the total effect. Conclusion: This study deepens the understanding of how physical activity reduces internet addiction risk while emphasizing that enhancing subjective well-being is an effective strategy for college students to cope with Internet addiction.

RESUMO

The non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is a recently developed lipid parameter, but there is currently a lack of research exploring its relationship with periodontitis. This study aims to identify the potential association between NHHR and periodontitis. The association between NHHR and periodontitis were examined through univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression utilizing the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2009 to 2014. The participants were grouped based on the type of periodontitis. This study included a total of 9023 participants, with 1947 individuals having no periodontitis, and an additional 7076 individuals suffering from periodontitis. Patients in periodontitis group demonstrated a statistically significant elevation in NHHR values 2.82 (2.05-3.80) compared to those in no periodontitis group (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis of variables demonstrated a positive association between NHHR and periodontitis [1.07 (1.02, 1.12) p = 0.0067]. The study revealed a positive association between NHHR and an elevated prevalence of periodontitis development. For each unit increase in NHHR, there is a 7% increase in the prevalence of periodontitis. Further investigations into NHHR may enhance our understanding of preventing and treating periodontitis. However, additional studies are required to validate these findings.

RESUMO

Background: There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets may prevent hyperlipidemia. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia is unclear. The CDAI is a composite score reflecting the antioxidant content of an individual's diet, and this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia. Methods: The study used the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for cross-sectional analyses and included 27,626 participants aged 20 years and older. The CDAI, which includes vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, was calculated based on dietary intake reported in a 24-h recall interview. Hyperlipidemia was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Covariates included age, sex, race, education, marriage, household poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), body mass index (BMI), energy, carbohydrates, total fat, cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, and lipid-lowering medications. The association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia was explored through multiple logistic regression analyses and smoothed curve fitting. We also performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests to verify the relationship's stability. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, CDAI was negatively associated with the risk of developing hyperlipidemia (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-0.99, p < 0.01). The results of weighted regression models stratified by quartiles of CDAI (-8.664 ≤ Q1 ≤ -2.209, -2.209 < Q2 ≤ -0.002, -0.002 < Q3 ≤ 2.774, 2.774 < Q4 ≤ 124.284), fully adjusted for confounding variables, indicated that compared with the bottom quartile (Q1) of the CDAI, Q2, Q3, and Q4 of participants had a lower advantage ratio (Q2: OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.78-1.06, p < 0.21; Q3: OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.73-1.00, p < 0.05; and Q4: OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.64-0.94, p < 0.01), which was confirmed by a test for trend (p < 0.05). Smoothed curve fit analysis showed linearity (p for non-linear = 0.0912). In summary, there is a linear negative relationship between CDAI and the risk of developing hyperlipidemia. Subgroup analyses by age, sex, ethnicity, education level, marriage, tobacco status, alcoholic drinking, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, and diabetes did not indicate strong interactions. Conclusion: In this large cross-sectional study, there was a linear negative association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia among US adults. Therefore increase antioxidant rich foods in your life as a prevention of hyperlipidemia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Induced abortion can seriously harm the physical and mental health of adolescent women. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) can effectively reduce unplanned pregnancies and prevent repeated abortions among adolescents. This study aimed to analyse the factors affecting the choice of LARC among adolescents in Chongqing of China. METHODS: A total of 555 adolescents who underwent induced abortions for unplanned pregnancies between January 2019 and October 2021 were selected as study subjects. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors affecting adolescent LARC choices following induced abortions. RESULTS: The factors that affected adolescent LARC choices included an average monthly income ≥ ¥3000 (OR = 3.432, 95% CI: 1.429∼8.244), history of previous abortions (OR = 3.141, 95% CI: 1.632∼6.045), worrying about unplanned pregnancy (OR = 0.365, 95% CI: 0.180∼0.740), parental support for using LARC (OR = 3.549, 95% CI: 1.607∼7.839), sexual partners' support for using LARC (OR = 2.349, 95% CI: 1.068∼5.167), concerns about using LARC (OR = 0.362, 95% CI: 0.176∼0.745), and willingness to use free IUDs (OR = 13.582, 95% CI: 7.173∼25.717). CONCLUSION: Cost is one of the factors affecting LARC choices. Parents and sexual partners may play important role in the choice of LARC.

The study analysed the choice of contraceptive methods and the factors affecting the choice of long-acting reversible contraception methods after induced abortion among adolescents in Chongqing, China. The results showed that the income level, history of previous abortions, extent of worrying about unplanned pregnancy, parents' and sexual partners' attitude towards to use long-acting reversible contraception methods, concerns about using long-acting reversible contraception methods, and willingness to use free intrauterine devices were the factors affecting the choice of long-acting reversible contraception methods after induced abortion among adolescents.

RESUMO

Number connection test A (NCT-A) and digit symbol test (DST), the preferential neuropsychological tests to detect minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) in China, haven't been standardized in Chinese population. We aimed to establish the norms based on a multi-center cross-sectional study and to detect MHE in cirrhotic patients. NCT-A and DST were administered to 648 healthy controls and 1665 cirrhotic patients. The regression-based procedure was applied to develop demographically adjusted norms for NCT-A and DST based on healthy controls. Age, gender, education, and age by education interaction were all predictors of DST, while age, gender, and education by gender interaction were predictors of log10 NCT-A. The predictive equations for expected scores of NCT-A and DST were established, and Z-scores were calculated. The norm for NCT-A was set as Z ≤ 1.64, while the norm for DST was set as Z ≥ - 1.64. Cirrhotic patients with concurrent abnormal NCT-A and DST results were diagnosed with MHE. The prevalence of MHE was 8.89% in cirrhotic patients, and only worse Child-Pugh classification (P = 0.002, OR = 2.389) was demonstrated to be the risk factor for MHE. The regression-based normative data of NCT-A and DST have been developed to detect MHE in China. A significant proportion of Chinese cirrhotic patients suffered from MHE, especially those with worse Child-Pugh classification.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Depression is a common and complex psychiatric disorder, and lipid metabolism plays an important role in the development of psychiatric disorders such as depression. Cardiometabolic index (CMI) is a novel index that synthesizes two quantitative indicators of blood lipids (triglyceride(TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)) and human obesity-related parameters (waist height ratio (WHtR)). This study used NHANES data to explore the correlation between CMI and the incidence of depression. METHODS AND RESULTS: Based on the data of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018, multivariate logistic regression, sensitivity analysis, and smooth curve fitting were used to study the relationship between CMI and depression. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were used to investigate whether the association was stable in different populations. CMI was positively associated with depression in 7229 participants aged >20 years. In the fully adjusted model, each unit increase in CMI was associated with 36 % higher likelihood of depression symptoms [1.36(1.16,1.59)]. Participants in the highest quartile of CMI had a 62 % higher risk of depression than participants in the lowest quartile [1.62(1.17,2.23)]. This positive correlation was more pronounced in those with hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: CMI was associated with a higher PHQ-9 score and an increased likelihood of depression among US adults. Further large-scale prospective studies are still need to analyze the role of CMI in depression.

RESUMO

Introduction: To explore the relationship between the composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) and gout to provide support for preventing gout through dietary intervention. Methods: Eligible participants from the 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey aged 20 years and older were included in this cross-sectional study. The weighted chi-square test was used to compare the categorical variables difference between CDAI quartiles groups. The weighted univariate and binary logistic regression analysis were used to test the association between variables and gout. The weighted multivariable logistic regression was used to test the association of CDAI and gout in 4 different models. Subgroup analysis on the associations of CDAI with gout was conducted with stratified factors. Results: The final participants were 26,117, 13,103 (50.17%) were female, 8718 (33.38%) were 40-59 years, 11,200 (42.88%) were white and 1232 (4.72%) had gout. After adjusting for all covariates, the CDAI was associated with gout (odds ratio (OR), .97; 95% CI: .95-1.00). Participants in the highest CDAI quantile group were at low risk of gout (odds ratio (OR), .65; 95% CI: .50-.84) versus those in the lowest quantile group. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed no significant dependence on diabetes mellitus (DM), marital status, alcohol status, hypertension, poverty income ratio (PIR), education level, body mass index (BMI), smoke status, age, sex, race, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) on this association (all p for interaction >.05). Conclusions: Composite dietary antioxidant index was inversely associated with gout in US adults, and dietary antioxidant intervention might be a promising method in the therapy of gout and greater emphasis should be placed on zinc, selenium, carotenoids, vitamins A, C, and E.

RESUMO

Background Virtual clinics played an important role for many patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted this cross-sectional study to evaluate patient perceptions and their satisfaction with virtual clinics during and after COVID-19 in Saudi Arabia. Methods An online questionnaire-based survey with questions in both Arabic and English was conducted among patients who attended outpatient clinics at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from May 2021 to September 2021. Demographic variables, the clinic type, and the level of satisfaction with the remote appointments were recorded. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data.  Results A total of 1274 participants filled out the survey. Of them, 831 (65.23%) were females, and 749 (58.79%) were aged 18 to 30 years old. Of the sample studied, 411 (32.26%) had appointments with their healthcare provider remotely since the beginning of the pandemic; 311 (75.67%) were satisfied or highly satisfied with the remote appointments; and 198 (48.18%) participants desired to continue using virtual services post-COVID-19 pandemic. Logistic regression analysis showed that females were more satisfied with virtual clinics than males (OR= 1.18, 95% CI (1.01, 1.40), p=0.04). The age group of 18 to 30 was more satisfied than other age groups (OR= 53.23, 95% CI (2.01, 1347.18), p=0.02). Conclusion The majority of the participants who used virtual clinics were satisfied with the service. Nearly half of the participants wanted to continue using virtual services even after the COVID-19 pandemic was over. More effort should be made to increase patient awareness and knowledge about virtual clinics.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the current state of emergency vehicle management within sports medicine and athletic hospitals, with a focus on hospitals located in Zhejiang Province. This study aims to provide valuable insights and recommendations for enhancing the management of emergency vehicles in the context of sports medicine. Methods: A convenience sampling approach was employed, involving surveys conducted with nurses from a total of 40 sports medicine and athletic hospitals located in 15 cities across Zhejiang Province during the period from April to May 2022. Results: The findings obtained through the questionnaire survey revealed noteworthy aspects. Specifically, 15.89% of the surveyed hospital departments lacked a dedicated pharmacist responsible for regular quality checks of emergency drugs. Furthermore, 55.14% of the respondents expressed concerns about the athlete nurses' level of knowledge regarding rescue drugs and related items. Alarmingly, the study found that 100% of the departments relied solely on manual inventory management for emergency drugs and items, with only 39.39% of them implementing partial information management systems, leading to varying degrees of inventory discrepancies. Conclusion: The study highlights certain shortcomings in the supervision and management systems related to emergency medicines and equipment within sports medicine and athletic hospitals. Additionally, personnel management practices appear to be lacking in some athletic hospitals. (AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been previously reported. Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) has better diagnostic performance than ultrasonography for assessing hepatic steatosis. The association of SUA with hepatic steatosis detected by CAP is worth further study. METHODS: The US population aged 20 years or older from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was assessed. Hepatic steatosis was evaluated by the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP). NAFLD status was defined as CAP values of 268 dB/m without hepatitis B or C virus infection or considerable alcohol consumption. Multiple imputations were performed to fill in the missing covariate values. Linear regression, logistic regression, and smooth curve fitting were used to examine the association. RESULTS: In total, 3919 individuals participated in this study. There was a positive association between SUA (µmol/L) and CAP (ß = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.12-0.17, P < 0.01). After stratification by sex, a significant relationship between SUA and CAP existed in both males (ß = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.09-0.16, P < 0.01) and females (ß = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.14-0.20, P < 0.01) after multiple imputation. The inflection points of the threshold effect of SUA on CAP were 487.7 µmol/L in males and 386.6 µmol/L in females. There was a positive association between SUA (mg/dL) and NAFLD (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.23-1.37, P < 0.01). After stratification by race, positive relationships were also observed. Meanwhile, a positive relationship existed between hyperuricemia and NAFLD (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.64-2.30, P < 0.01). The positive relationship was more significant in females than in males (P for interaction < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: There was a positive association between SUA and CAP, as well as between SUA and NAFLD. Subgroup studies stratified by sex and ethnicity demonstrated that the effects were consistent.

RESUMO

Background Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is relatively common in childhood and is characterized by repeated partial or complete blockages of the upper airway during sleep. Children affected by OSA can experience various symptoms including snoring, restless sleep, and behavioral issues such as hyperactivity, impulsivity, and aggression, which interfere with their quality of life. Additionally, OSA can result in serious conditions such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. This study aims to determine the level of knowledge and awareness of OSA among parents in the Jeddah region. Methodology An observational cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the level of awareness of OSA among all parents in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Participants were recruited through social media platforms. The online survey assessed the knowledge regarding the OSA definition, risk factors, associated symptoms, and treatment. Results A total of 462 participants were included. Only 16% of participants had a good level of knowledge of OSA, while the remaining 84% had a poor level of knowledge. The mean knowledge score was 15.39 ± 5.8, with a significant difference between occupations (P=0.039). Conclusion Our study reveals that parents in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia have a low level of knowledge about pediatric OSA, with only 16% demonstrating good knowledge and less than half recognizing the definition of OSA. This lack of knowledge could lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, negatively impacting children's health and academic performance. Common symptoms of OSA reported by parents were restless sleep, mouth breathing, and snoring, but bedwetting and hyperactivity were poorly recognized. Adenoids, allergic sinusitis, enlarged tonsils, asthma, and obesity were identified as risk factors for OSA. Improving parental awareness of OSA through public campaigns, doctor consultations, and education programs is crucial. Further studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of these interventions.

RESUMO

Introduction The present study was carried out to investigate the epidemiology of primary headaches amongst undergraduate medical students by determining the prevalence of primary headaches and their associated psychosocial factors. Methods A crosssectional study was conducted at a medical college in the Vidarbha region of India from January 2023 to February 2023 amongst 471 medical students. Diagnosis of tension-type headache (TTH) was made according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) criteria. Data were collected by interview technique using a pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. that consisted of socio-demographic variables and psychosocial factors. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS 24.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA).  Results Prevalence of headache was 80% and was higher in females (87%) than in males (71%). TTH is the most common type with a prevalence of 76% in females followed by 64% in males. Psychosocial factors associated with presence of headache in study subjects were disappointment in relation to academic performance (OR 3.85, CI 1.68-2.71), poor socio-economic status (OR 2.69, CI 1.58-4.57), work overload (OR 0.41, CI 0.24-0.68), irritability (OR 0.33, CI 0.19-0.57) and frequent conflicts (OR 1.45, CI 0.78-2.70). Stress (OR 0.27, CI 0.11-0.71) and anxiety (OR 3.45, CI 1.31-9.08) were associated with headaches only in females and depression (OR 0.50, CI 0.25-1.01) was found to be associated with headaches only in males. Conclusions Psychosocial factors from the personal sphere like stress, overwork, and anxiety were highly prevalent amongst students and these factors need to be addressed meticulously in order to mitigate the problem of primary headache disorders amongst medical undergraduates.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Folate is considered to be related to lipid metabolism. With the increasing numbers of folic acid fortification nations, the associations of dietary folate and serum folate with lipid profiles deserve more attention and are worth further study. METHODS: US adults aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were evaluated. Participants taking folic acid supplements were excluded. The multivariate linear regression model and smooth curve fitting were applied to assess the associations. The segmented regression model was employed to examine the threshold effect of nonlinear relationships. RESULTS: Our cross-sectional study included 3706 participants in total. There was a negative relationship between serum folate (log transformed) and triglycerides (ß = -0.223, 95% CI: -0.337, -0.110) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (ß = -0.152, 95% CI: -0.296, -0.007) and a positive relationship between serum folate (log transformed) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (ß = 0.090, 95% CI: 0.033,0.146). There was a negative association between dietary folate (log transformed) and total cholesterol (TC) (ß = -0.299, 95% CI: -0.465, -0.134) and LDL-C (ß = -0.266, 95% CI: -0.409, -0.123). A nonlinear relationship was found between dietary folate (log transformed) and HDL-C. Threshold effect analysis showed that the inflection point was 377.57 ug. Within the inflection point, the ß-coefficient of HDL-C was 0.105 (95% CI: 0.018, 0.192); beyond the inflection point, there was no relationship (ß = -0.067, 95% CI: -0.162, 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: Optimal dietary folate and high serum folate were associated with favorable lipid profiles. Dietary folate, in the recommended 300-400 ug/d, had a beneficial effect on improving lipid profiles.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the relationship between the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using NHANES from 1999 to 2018. METHODS: We collected data from the NHANES database from 1999 to 2018. The SII is calculated from the counts of lymphocytes (LC), neutrophils (NC), and platelets (PC). The RA patients were derived from questionnaire data. We used weighted multivariate regression analysis and subgroup analysis to explore the relationship between SII and RA. Furthermore, the restricted cubic splines were used to explore the non-linear relationships. RESULT: Our study included a total of 37,604 patients, of which 2642 (7.03%) had rheumatoid arthritis. After adjusting for all covariates, the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that high SII (In-transform) levels were associated with an increased likelihood of rheumatoid arthritis (OR=1.167, 95% CI=1.025-1.328, P=0.020). The interaction test revealed no significant effect on this connection. In the restricted cubic spline regression model, the relationship between ln-SII and RA was non-linear. The cutoff value of SII for RA was 578.25. The risk of rheumatoid arthritis increases rapidly when SII exceeds the cutoff value. CONCLUSION: In general, there is a positive correlation between SII and rheumatoid arthritis. Our study shows that SII is a novel, valuable, and convenient inflammatory marker that can be used to predict the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in US adults.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic, recurrent episodes of partial or complete airway obstruction during sleep. It has a negative impact on quality of life and behavior and can lead to adverse neurological and cardiovascular outcomes if left untreated. This study aims to assess the awareness and knowledge of pediatric OSA among parents attending a general pediatric clinic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2022 to December 2022, on parents who attended the pediatric clinic at Dr. Soliman Fakeeh Hospital in Jeddah. Participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire, either using a tablet or a paper-based survey. The questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic information and questions assessing the parents' knowledge and awareness of pediatric OSA. RESULTS: The study included 146 participants. The mean knowledge score was 15.38 ± 6. Only 20% of the participants had a good knowledge level, while 80% had a poor level of knowledge. Furthermore, regarding the definition of OSA, 60 out of 146 participants answered correctly. Enlargement of adenoids was the most recognized risk factor, and restless sleep was the most recognized symptom. The majority of participants agreed that consulting an expert doctor was the best method to raise awareness about childhood OSA. CONCLUSION: The result of our study reveals the low level of awareness and knowledge of pediatric OSA among parents attending a pediatric clinic in Jeddah. This highlights the need for health education programs and sensitization campaigns to improve awareness of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.

RESUMO

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the sense of job security and its influencing factors among healthcare workers in Guangdong, China. Methods: This cross-sectional study used stratified random sampling to enroll healthcare workers employed by hospitals across Guangdong province between September 2020 and October 2020. Results: A total of 4,173 questionnaires were distributed, and 4,076 were returned for an effective recovery rate of 97.68%. The overall score for the sense of security was 64.85 ± 20.09, and the item means score was 2.95 ± 0.91. Multiple-linear regression analysis showed that work experience (years), education level, job position, specialty unit, employment type, marital status, job satisfaction, WPV frequency, daily sleep duration, weekly overtime hours, average monthly earnings (RMB), hospital level, and region were significantly associated with senses of poor security among healthcare workers (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Hospital workers in Guangdong reported relatively low levels of job security. Levels of job security were significantly associated with multiple factors which could be addressed by hospital practices to improve the sense of job security among healthcare workers.
