Despite a good knowledge of cadmium accumulation in Gammarus fossarum, studies to date have focused on Cd accumulated via the dissolved pathway, leaving aside the trophic pathway. The aim of this study was to assess cadmium organotropism and bioaccumulation processes following a trophic exposure of the species Gammarus fossarum. Adult male gammarids were fed with 109Cd contaminated alder leaves discs for 6 days and then with clean alder leaves for 12 days. During both phases, some gammarids were collected and dissected, and intestines, hepatopancreas, cephalons, gills and remaining tissues were separated to measure their Cd concentrations. Their relative proportions of Cd and their respective BMFs were estimated. The ingestion rate (IR) measured during the exposure phase was divided by 3 between days 2 and 6, indicating that gammarids reduced their feeding activity and therefore the exposure pressure. A multi-compartments TK model was developed, and an iterative inference process was run to select the most parsimonious model that best fits all organ datasets simultaneously. The results showed that: i) intestine and hepatopancreas bioconcentrate Cd the most; ii) no cadmium was quantified in gills, meaning that they do not appear to play a role in Cd storage or elimination with a trophic exposure; iii) Cd elimination occurs only through the intestine; and iv) the general pattern of Cd fate in gammarids, obtained here after dietary highlights once again the importance of the intestine and hepatopancreas, as for the dissolved pathway.

Metabolic pathways are affected by the impacts of environmental contaminants underlying a large variability of toxic effects across different species. However, the systematic reconstruction of metabolic pathways remains limited in environmental sentinel species due to the lack of available genomic data in many taxa of animal diversity. In this study we used a multi-omics approach to reconstruct the most comprehensive map of metabolic pathways for a crustacean model in biomonitoring, the amphipod Gammarus fossarum in order to improve the knowledge of the metabolism of this sentinel species. We revisited the assembly of RNA-seq data by de novo approaches to reduce RNA contaminants and transcript redundancy. We also acquired extensive mass spectrometry shotgun proteomic data on several organs from a reference population of G. fossarum males and females to identify organ-specific metabolic profiles. The G. fossarum metabolic pathway reconstruction (available through the metabolic database GamfoCyc) was performed by adapting the genomic tool CycADS and we identified 377 pathways representing 7630 annotated enzymes, 2610 enzymatic reactions and the expression of 858 enzymes was experimentally validated by proteomics. To our knowledge, our analysis provides for the first time a systematic metabolic pathway reconstruction and the proteome profiles of these pathways at the organ level in this sentinel species. As an example, we show an elevated abundance in enzymes involved in ATP biosynthesis and fatty acid beta-oxidation indicative of the high-energy requirement of the gills, or the key anabolic and detoxification role of the hepatopancreatic caeca, as exemplified by the specific expression of the retinoid biosynthetic pathways and glutathione synthesis. In conclusion, the multi-omics data integration performed in this study provides new resources to investigate metabolic processes in crustacean amphipods and their role in mediating the effects of environmental contaminant exposures in sentinel species. SYNOPSIS: This study provide the first evidence that it is possible to combine multiple omics data to exhaustively describe the metabolic network of a model species in ecotoxicology, Gammarus fossarum, for which a reference genome is not yet available.

This study delves into the unexplored distribution and accumulation of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), pervasive industrial contaminants used as flame retardants and plasticizers, within the hadal trenches, some of Earth's most isolated marine ecosystems. Analysis of sediments from the Mussau (MS) and Mariana trench (MT) reveals notably high total CP concentrations (∑SCCPs + ∑MCCPs) of 10,963 and 14,554 ng g-1 dw, respectively, surpassing those in a reference site in the western Pacific abyssal plain (8533 ng g-1 dw). In contrast, the New Britain Trench (NBT) exhibits the lowest concentrations (2213-5880 ng g-1 dw), where CP distribution correlates with clay content, δ13C and δ15N values, but little with total organic carbon and depth. Additionally, amphipods from these trenches display varying CP levels, with MS amphipods reaching concerning concentrations (8681-16,138 ng g-1 lw), while amphipods in the MT-1 site show the lowest (4414-5010 ng g-1 lw). These bioaccumulation trends appear to be primarily influenced by feeding behaviors (δ13C) and trophic levels (δ15N). Utilizing biota-sediment accumulation factor values and principal component analysis, we discern that CPs in sediment may come from surface-derived particulate organic matters, while those in amphipods may come from the above carrion. Our findings elucidate the profound impacts of the emerging pollutants on the Earth's least explored marine ecosystems.

Pollution by active ingredients is one of the most significant and widespread forms of pollution on Earth. Medicines can have a negative impact on ecosystems, and contamination can have unpredictable consequences. An urgent and unexplored task is to study the Lake Baikal ecosystem and its organisms for the presence of trace concentrations of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Our study aimed to conduct a qualitative analysis of active pharmaceutical ingredients, and quantitative analysis of ibuprofen in endemic amphipods of Lake Baikal, using methods of high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), ibuprofen, acetaminophen, azithromycin, dimetridazole, metronidazole, amikacin, spiramycin, and some tetracycline antibiotics were detected in the studied littoral amphipods. We also detected different annual loads of active pharmaceutical ingredients on amphipods. Using the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode mentioned in GOST International Technical Standards, we detected molecules, fragmented as amikacin, chlortetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, dimetridazole, metronidazole and spiramycin. Thus, we first revealed that invertebrates of Lake Baikal can uptake pharmaceutical contaminants in the environment.

Endemic amphipods (Crustacea: Amphipoda) of Lake Baikal represent an outstanding example of large species flocks occupying a wide range of ecological niches and originating from a handful of ancestor species. Their development took place at a restricted territory and is thus open for comprehensive research. Such examples provide unique opportunities for studying behavioral, anatomic, or physiological adaptations in multiple combinations of environmental conditions and thus attract considerable attention. The existing taxonomies of this group list over 350 species and subspecies, which, according to the molecular phylogenetic studies of marker genes, full transcriptomes and mitochondrial genomes, originated from at least two introductions into the lake. The studies of allozymes and marker genes have revealed a significant cryptic diversity in Baikal amphipods, as well as a large variance in genetic diversity within some morphological species. Crossing experiments conducted so far for two morphological species suggest that the differences in the mitochondrial marker (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene) can potentially be applied for making predictions about reproductive isolation. For about one-tenth of the Baikal amphipod species, nuclear genome sizes and chromosome numbers are known. While genome sizes vary within one order of magnitude, the karyotypes are relatively stable (2n = 52 for most species studied). Moreover, analysis of the diversity of repeated sequences in nuclear genomes showed significant between-species differences. Studies of mitochondrial genomes revealed some unusual features, such as variation in length and gene order, as well as duplications of tRNA genes, some of which also underwent remolding (change in anticodon specificity due to point mutations). The next important steps should be (i) the assembly of whole genomes for different species of Baikal amphipods, which is at the moment hampered by complicated genome structures with high repeat content, and (ii) updating species taxonomy taking into account all the data.

Benthic amphipod feeding groups are a well-established trophic classification that is mostly based on field observations and laboratory tests and are used in ecological studies to monitor the ecological state of benthic ecosystems. Globally, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratio investigations have provided confirmation of, and novel insights into, the trophic ecology of benthic animals, such as polychaetes. However, stable isotopic examinations of benthic amphipods have been limited. Here, we used microgram samples to compare the species-specific dietary sources, trophic positions, and isotopic niche overlap of selected benthic amphipods from the Gulf of Kachchh, Marine National Park, using elemental analyser-isotopic ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS) of carbon and nitrogen. Overall, all primary carbon sources presented wide variation in the isotopic values of δ13C (6.3‰) and δ15N (greater than 13‰). Conversely, the amphipod taxa displayed relatively narrow range for δ13C (3.9‰) and wider range for δ15N (more than 10‰). The results of the Bayesian mixing model revealed that the benthic amphipods had species-specific feeding preferences. However, the predominant carbon source was organic matter in sediment which reinforced benthic pathways for energy flow for most species. According to the estimated trophic level values (1.62-3.39), these species play a significant role as primary and secondary consumers serving as crucial trophic intermediaries in the food chain, connecting the base to the top consumers. High overlapping ecological niche amongst species was detected by SIBER analysis which indicated co-existence of the benthic amphipods in their respective microhabitats. This signifies wider utilisation of resources and inter-specific feeding preferences with minimal competition amongst amphipod species.

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) threatens to disrupt most natural habitats and species, including those in coastal settings, where a growing number of studies have identified ALAN impacts. A careful examination of the light properties behind those impacts is important to better understand and manage the effects of this stressor. This study focused on ALAN monochromatic wavelengths and examined which types of light spectra altered the natural activity of two prominent coastal species from the Pacific southeast: the talitroid amphipod Orchestoidea tuberculata and the oniscoid isopod Tylos spinulosus. We compared the natural daylight/night activity of these organisms with the one they exhibit when exposed to five different ALAN wavelengths: lights in the violet, blue, green, amber, and red spectra. Our working hypothesis was that ALAN alters these species' activity at night, but the magnitude of such impact differs depending on light wavelengths. Measurements of activity over 24 h cycles for five consecutive days and in three separate experiments confirmed a natural circadian activity pattern in both species, with strong activity at night (∼90% of probability) and barely any activity during daylight. However, when exposed to ALAN, activity declined significantly in both species under all light wavelengths. Interestingly, amphipods exhibited moderate activity (∼40% of probability) when exposed to red lights at night, whereas isopods shifted some of their activity to daylight hours in two of the experiments when exposed to blue or amber lights, suggesting a possible alteration in this species circadian rhythm. Altogether, our results were consistent with our working hypothesis, and suggest that ALAN reduces night activity, and some wavelengths have differential effects on each species. Differences between amphipods and isopods are likely related to their distinct adaptations to natural low-light habitat conditions, and therefore distinct sensitivity to ALAN.

The genus Exophiala is polymorphic, able to transition between yeast, hyphal and pseudohyphal forms. Species of the genus Exophiala are ubiquitous fungi that are distributed in various environments around the world. During a survey of fungal diversity in the gut of amphipods (Floresorchestia amphawaensis and undescribed Dogielinotid amphipods) from the Amphawa estuary, Samut Songkhram province, Thailand, five black yeast strains (DMKU-MG01, DMKU-MG07, DMKU-MG08, DMKU-HG10 and DMKU-FG04) were identified as representing a novel taxon on the basis of a combination of morphological and molecular phylogenetic features. The five strains did not produce filamentous hyphae or pseudohyphae. Only budding yeast cells were observed. On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics and the results of molecular analyses of the D1/D2 region of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, the five strains were identified as representing a novel species via applied nucleotide pairwise analysis. They differed from the most closely related species Exophiala alcalophiala by 3.54 % nucleotide substitutions (20 nucleotide substitutions in 572 bp) in the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene. Moreover, the sequences of the ITS region of the five strains differed from those of the most closely related species E. alcalophiala, by 7.44-9.62 % nucleotide substitutions, and Exophiala halophiala, by 7.2-7.53 % nucleotide substitutions. The results of phylogenetic analyses based on the concatenated sequences of the ITS regions and the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA gene confirmed that the five black yeast strains represented a single novel species of the genus Exophiala. In this study, Exophiala amphawaensis sp. nov. is proposed to accommodate these strains. The holotype is TBRC 15626T and the isotype is PYCC9020. The MycoBank accession number of the novel species is MB 851477.

Live foods such as phytoplankton and zooplankton are essential food sources in aquaculture. Due to their small size, they are suitable for newly hatched larvae. Artemia and rotifer are commonly used live feeds in aquaculture; each feed has a limited dietary value, which is unsuitable for all cultured species. Whereas, copepod and cladocerans species exhibit favorable characteristics that make them viable candidates as sources of essential nutrients for hatchery operations. Due to their jerking movements, it stimulates the feeding response of fish larvae, and their various sizes make them suitable for any fish and crustacean. Even though Artemia is the best live feed due to its proficient nutritional quality, the cost is very expensive, which is about half of the production cost. A recent study suggests the use of amphipods and mysids as alternative live feeds in aquaculture. High nutritional value is present in amphipods and mysids, especially proteins, lipids, and essential fatty acids that are required by fish larvae during early development. Amphipods and mysids are considered abundant in the aquatic ecosystem and have been used by researchers in water toxicity studies. However, the culture of amphipods and mysids has been poorly studied. There is only a small-scale culture under laboratory conditions for scientific research that has been performed. Thus, further research is required to find a way to improve the mass culture of amphipods and mysids that can benefit the aquaculture industry. This review article is intended to provide the available information on amphipods and mysids, including reproductive biology, culture method, nutritional value, feed enhancement, and the importance of them as potential live feed in aquaculture. This article is useful as a guideline for researchers, hatchery operators, and farmers.

This study presents the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Gammarus nipponensis, a freshwater crustacean found in the western regions of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. The entire genome is 16,429 bp in length, encoding a standard set of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and 22 transfer RNA genes, as well as the putative control regions. The mitochondrial genome of G. nipponensis is characterized by a high concentration of A and T nucleotides (67.1%). Notably, the mitogenome contains long TATTTTA repeats in the control region 2 at 686 bp long. This newly available genome information will be useful for studying the evolutionary relationships within the genus Gammarus and for understanding diversification among G. nipponensis populations.

The presence of shoreline microplastics (1-5 mm) and mesoplastics (5-25 mm) in estuarine ecosystems is ubiquitous, but there remains little data on their composition, contamination status and ecological impacts. Chessel Bay Nature Reserve, situated in the internationally protected Itchen Estuary in Southampton, UK, has serious issues with shoreline plastic accumulation. In evaluating potentially adverse ecological impacts, the influence of quantities of shoreline microplastic (mp) and mesoplastic (MeP) material and adsorbed contaminants (PAHs and trace metals) on the biometrics and population dynamics of the burrowing supralittoral amphipod, Orchestia gammarellus, was assessed in this study. mp/MeP concentrations were variable in surface (0-42%: 0-422,640 mg/kg dry sediment) and subsurface horizons (0.001-10%: 11-97,797 mg/kg dry sediment). Secondary microplastics accounted for 77% of the total microplastic load (dominated by fragments and foams), but also comprised 23% nurdles/pellets (primary microplastics). Sorption mechanisms between contaminants and natural sediments were proposed to be the main contributor to the retention of PAHs and trace metal contaminants and less so, by mp/MeP. O. gammarellus populations showed a positive correlation with microplastic concentrations (Spearman correlation, R = 0.665, p = 0.036). Some reported toxicological thresholds were exceeded in sediments, but no impacts related to chemical contaminant concentrations were demonstrated. This study highlights a protected site with the severe plastic contamination, and the difficulty in demonstrating in situ ecotoxicological impacts.

In this work, we extracted chitosan from marine amphipods associated with aquaculture facilities and tested its use in crop protection. The obtained chitosan was 2.5 ± 0.3% of initial ground amphipod dry weight. The chemical nature of chitosan from amphipod extracts was confirmed via Raman scattering spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This chitosan showed an 85.7-84.3% deacetylation degree. Chitosan from biofouling amphipods at 1 mg·mL-1 virtually arrested conidia germination (ca. sixfold reduction from controls) of the banana wilt pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp cubense Tropical Race 4 (FocTR4). This concentration reduced (ca. twofold) the conidia germination of the biocontrol fungus Pochonia chlamydosporia (Pc123). Chitosan from amphipods at low concentrations (0.01 mg·mL-1) still reduced FocTR4 germination but did not affect Pc123. This is the first time that chitosan is obtained from biofouling amphipods. This new chitosan valorizes aquaculture residues and has potential for biomanaging the diseases of food security crops such as bananas.

Specimens of the sandhopper Orchestoidea tuberculata (Amphipoda; Talitridae) collected from sandy beaches in south-central Chile, were found to be parasitized by juvenile mermithids, constituting the first record of a mermithid infecting a marine amphipod in Chile. A morphological description of juveniles is provided. Sequence analyses based on mitochondrial COI and nuclear 18S rDNA of the mermithids showed extremely low genetic variation. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the mermithid is more closely related to Hexamermis agrotis, which parasitize Coleoptera, than to Thaumamermis zealandica, which parasitizes New Zealand confamilial talitrid amphipods.

Considering long-term population effects of chronic exposure to contaminants remains limited in ecological risk assessment. Field evidence that multigenerational exposure influences organisms' sensitivity is still scarce, and mechanisms have yet to be elucidated in the environmental context. This study focuses on the crustacean Gammarus fossarum, for which an increased tolerance to cadmium (Cd) has previously been reported in a naturally low-contaminated headwater stream. Our objectives were to investigate whether Cd tolerance is a common phenomenon in headwater populations, and to elucidate the nature of the tolerance and its intergenerational transmission. For this, we carried out an in-depth in situ characterization of Cd exposure (gammarids' caging) and levels of tolerance in nine populations on a regional scale, as well as laboratory maintenance and cross-breeding of contaminated and uncontaminated populations. Acute tolerance levels correlate positively with bioavailable Cd contamination levels among streams. The contaminated and non-contaminated populations differ about two-fold in sensitivity to Cd. Tolerance was found in all age classes of contaminated populations, it can be transiently lost during the year, and it was transmissible to offspring. In addition, tolerance levels dropped significantly when organisms were transferred to a Cd-free environment for two months. These organisms also ceased producing tolerant offspring, confirming a non-genetic transmission of Cd tolerance between generations. These findings support that Cd tolerance corresponds to non-genetic acclimation combined with transgenerational plasticity. Moreover, cross-breeding revealed that tolerance transmission to offspring is not limited to maternal effect. We suggest epigenetics as a plausible mechanism for the plasticity of Cd sensitivity observed in the field. Our results therefore highlight the neglected role of plasticity and non-genetic transmission of modified sensitivities during the long-term exposure of natural populations to environmental contamination.

DNA repeat composition of low coverage (0.1-0.5) genomic libraries of four amphipods species endemic to Lake Baikal (East Siberia) and four endemic gastropod species of the fam. Baicaliidae have been compared to each other. In order to do so, a neighbor joining tree was inferred for each quartet of species (amphipods and mollusks) based on the ratio of repeat classes shared in each pair of species. The topology of this tree was compared to the phylogenies inferred for the same species from the concatenated protein-coding mitochondrial nucleotide sequences. In all species analyzed, the fraction of DNA repeats involved circa half of the genome. In relatively more ancient amphipods (most recent common ancestor, MRCA, existed approximately sixty millions years ago), the most abundant were species-specific repeats, while in much younger Baicaliidae (MRCA equal to ca. three millions years) most of the DNA repeats were shared among all four species. If the presence/absence of a repeat is regarded as a separate independent trait, and the ratio of shared to total numbers of repeats in a species pair is used as the measure of distance, the topology of the NJ tree is the same as the quartet phylogeny inferred for the mitogenomes protein coding nucleotide sequences. Meanwhile, in each group of species, a substantial number of repeats were detected pointing to the possibility of non-neutral evolution or a horizontal transfer between species occupying the same biotope. These repeats were shared by non-sister groups while being absent in the sister genomes. On the other hand, in such cases some traits of ecological significance were also shared.

Exposure to chemical pollution can induce genetic and epigenetic alterations, developmental changes, and reproductive disorders, leading to population declines in polluted environments. These effects are triggered by chemical modifications of DNA nucleobases (DNA adducts) and epigenetic dysregulation. However, linking DNA adducts to the pollution load in situ remains challenging, and the lack of evidence-based DNA adductome response to pollution hampers the development and application of DNA adducts as biomarkers for environmental health assessment. Here, we provide the first evidence for pollution effects on the DNA modifications in wild populations of Baltic sentinel species, the amphipod Monoporeia affinis. A workflow based on high-resolution mass spectrometry to screen and characterize genomic DNA modifications was developed, and its applicability was demonstrated by profiling DNA modifications in the amphipods collected in areas with varying pollution loads. Then, the correlations between adducts and the contaminants level (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trace metals, and pollution indices) in the sediments at the collection sites were evaluated. A total of 119 putative adducts were detected, and some (5-me-dC, N6-me-dA, 8-oxo-dG, and dI) were structurally characterized. The DNA adductome profiles, including epigenetic modifications, differed between the animals collected in areas with high and low contaminant levels. Furthermore, the correlations between the adducts and PAHs were similar across the congeners, indicating possible additive effects. Also, high-mass adducts had significantly more positive correlations with PAHs than low-mass adducts. By contrast, correlations between the DNA adducts and trace metals were stronger and more variable than for PAHs, indicating metal-specific effects. These associations between DNA adducts and environmental contaminants provide a new venue for characterizing genome-wide exposure effects in wild populations and apply DNA modifications in the effect-based assessment of chemical pollution.

To study the environmental impact of the assessment technologies for the development of shallow methane hydrate zones in the Sea of Japan, deep-sea amphipods (Pseudorchomene sp. and Anonyx sp.) were collected from a depth of approximately 1000 m and were tested for H2S toxicity. At 0.57 mg L-1 H2S, all specimens of Pseudorchomene sp. were dead after 96 h, whereas all individuals survived at 0.18 mg L-1. Moreover, Anonyx sp. had a survival rate of 17 % after 96 h at 0.24 mg L-1. A similar toxicity test was conducted with the coastal amphipod Merita sp., a detritivore, and all individuals died within 24 h at 0.15 mg L-1. These results suggested that compared with coastal detritivorous amphipods, deep-sea detritivorous amphipods, which also live near biomats with sediment H2S concentrations exceeding 10 mg L-1, showed a higher tolerance to H2S.

The multixenobiotic resistance (MXR) mechanism has been demonstrated to be present in a wide range of species, including aquatic organisms. However, amphipods (Crustacea: Malacostraca: Amphipoda), which constitute a large order of arthropods, are extremely poorly studied in this regard. Information on MXR proteins in these animals would be highly relevant, as some amphipods are important models in ecotoxicology due to their roles in many freshwater environments, including the ancient Lake Baikal. In this work, we studied the diversity of ABC transporters in the available transcriptomes of over 60 endemic Baikal amphipods in comparison to other related species. This showed that most classes of ABC transporters are present in all analyzed species and that most Baikal amphipods detectably express no more than one complete ABCB full transporter. We also showed that these sequences were conservative across different species, and their phylogeny was congruent with the species phylogeny. Thus, we chose the abcb1 coding sequence from Eulimnogammarus verrucosus, a widespread species playing an important role in the lake ecosystem, to establish the first heterologous expression system for an amphipod Abcb1/P-glycoprotein based on the Drosophila melanogaster S2 cell line. The resulting stably transfected S2 cell line was expressing the abcb1 of E. verrucosus about 1000 times higher than the homologous fly genes, and the target protein, Abcb1, showed to confer a high MXR-related efflux activity. Our results indicate the suitability of the S2-based expression systems for the study of arthropod ABCB1 homologs.

Organic anthropogenic pollutants reach even the deepest parts of the oceans, i.e., the hadal trenches. We here presented the concentrations, influencing factors, and potential sources of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in hadal sediments and amphipods from the Mariana, Mussau and New Britain trenches. Results showed that BDE 209 was the dominant PBDEs congener and DBDPE was the dominant NBFRs. No significant correlation was found between TOC contents and PBDEs or NBFRs levels in sediment. Lipid content and body length were the potential important factors affecting variation in pollutant concentrations in the carapace & muscle of amphipods, while the pollution levels of viscera were mainly affected by the sex and lipid content. PBDEs and NBFRs might reach trench surface seawater through long-range atmospheric transport and oceans currents but with little contribution from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Determination of carbon and nitrogen isotopes indicated that the pollutants were transported and accumulated in amphipods and sediment via different pathways. PBDEs and NBFRs in the hadal sediments were generally transported via the settling of sediment particles of either marine or terrigenous origin whereas in amphipods they accumulated via feeding on animal carrion through the food web. This is the first study reporting on BDE 209 and NBFR contaminations in hadal settings and provide new insight on influencing factors and sources of PBDEs and NBFRs in the deepest oceans.

Talitrid amphipods are an important component of detritus web, playing a key role in the fragmentation of organic matters of marine and terrestrial origin, and it is well known that sandhoppers ingest microplastics. To assess the effective consumption of bioplastics and their effects on survival rate and on pollutants transfer (i.e. phthalates) on supralittoral arthropods, laboratory experiments were conducted by feeding adult T. saltator with two different types of bioplastic commonly used in the production of shopping bags. Groups of about 20 individuals were fed with 10 × 10 cm sample sheets of the two types of bioplastic for four weeks. The results show that amphipods ingest bioplastics even in the absence of microbial film and that ingestion of bioplastic can have effects on talitrid amphipods. Microtomographic analyses of faecal pellets seem consistent with this finding. The high phthalate concentrations in freshly collected individuals suggest the presence in the environment of these compounds, and the ability of amphipods to assimilate them, while the decrease in phthalate concentrations in bioplastic-fed individuals could be attributed to the scavenging effect of virgin plastic, as already observed in a previous study. In summary, the results indicate that different bioplastics may have effects on T. saltator (i.e. survival rate and faecal pellets structure) and confirm a potential role of amphipods in the degradation of bioplastics in supralittoral zone of marine sandy beaches, even when bioplastics are not colonized by bacterial biofilm that seems to improve palatability.
