We aimed to develop a novel method for measuring the complement-binding ability of anti-blood type antibodies (ab-Abs), the flow cytometry method for the complement C1q test (FCM-C1q) for detecting antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) caused by ab-Abs in ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOI-KTx). FCM-C1q distribution was surveyed in 44 healthy participants and 43 dialysis patients (Cohort A). The relationship between AMR and FCM-C1q levels was examined along with ab-Ab titers by the flow cytometry method for the IgG test (FCM-IgG) in 62 ABOI-KTx patients (Cohort B). FCM-IgG and C1q levels were significantly higher in type O participants than in A/B participants in Cohort A. There were minimal differences in the distribution of FCM-IgG and C1q between dialysis and healthy participants. Sixteen cases were suspected of acute rejections (ARs) in Cohort B, of whom nine had AR clinically. One patient with severe AMR was highly suspected of hyperacute rejection along with another patient with severe AMR. Their postoperative FCM-C1q and FCM-IgG levels were elevated. Another two patients showed high FCM-IgG and C1q levels before KTx, and these levels remained low after KTx with no or mild rejection. In conclusion, our results suggest that a high positivity rate for FCM-C1q may predict moderate to severe AMR caused by ab-Abs and poor prognosis in ABOI-KTx.

The etiology of spina bifida, a neural tube birth defect, is largely unknown, but a majority of cases are thought to be genetic in origin. Although maternal blood type was found not to be associated with the occurrence of spina bifida, the analysis was never extended to other aspects of the disorder. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine if maternal blood type was related to characteristics of children with spina bifida. The blood type of 221 mothers of children with spina bifida enrolled on the Arkansas Spinal Cord Disability Registry from 1995 to 2008 was obtained by mailed questionnaire. All children were community-dwelling and from singleton pregnancies. As expected, analysis of mother-child data showed that the distribution of mothers' blood type was not statistically different from the general population (chi-squared, P = 0.9203). However, the blood type of these mothers was associated with their child's lesion level (chi-squared, P = 0.011). Mothers with blood type A more frequently had children with thoracic lesions; mothers with non-A blood types more frequently had children with lumbar and sacral lesions. In addition, mean birthweight differed by mothers' blood type (analysis of variance, P = 0.025). Children of mothers with blood type A had the highest mean birthweight, while those of mothers with blood type AB had the lowest. Also, hydrocephalus was present more frequently in children with thoracic lesions compared to those with lumbar and sacral lesions (chi-squared, P = 0.001). Interestingly, these results were significant for female children but not for male children. In conclusion, maternal blood type was associated with lesion level and birthweight of children with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the correlation between ABO blood type and the incidence of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (LEDVT) in elderly patients after hip fracture surgery, while identifying contributing factors to thrombogenesis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 159 elderly patients with hip fractures treated at Tianjin Hospital (Affiliated Hospital of Tianjin University) from December 2021 to December 2023. The cohort was divided into two groups: those with O blood type (45 patients) and those with non-O blood types (114 patients). We analyzed clinical data and the incidence of LEDVT between the groups. Logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors for LEDVT, and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis evaluated the predictive efficacy of these factors. RESULTS: The incidence of LEDVT was significantly higher in the non-O blood type group compared to the O blood type group (34.21% vs. 15.56%, P = 0.0408). Logistic regression identified high body mass index (BMI), comorbid hypertension, low platelet count (PLT), prolonged prothrombin time (PT), and non-O blood type as independent risk factors for LEDVT. The ROC curve for these predictors showed an area under the curve of 0.862, with a sensitivity of 75.22%, a specificity of 86.96%, and an accuracy of 78.62%. CONCLUSION: ABO blood type is correlated with the occurrence of LEDVT in elderly patients' post-hip fracture. Those with non-O blood type, alongside other factors such as high BMI, hypertension, low PLT, and extended PT, are at increased risk of developing LEDVT.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on ABO blood types and stroke has been controversial, predominantly suggesting heightened risk of stroke in non-O blood types. Nonetheless, investigations into the correlation and underlying mechanisms between ABO blood groups and stroke subtypes, especially within Chinese cohorts, remain limited. METHODS: The ABO blood types of 9,542 ischaemic stroke (IS) patients were inferred using two ABO gene loci (c.261G > del; c.802G > A). The healthy population was derived from the 1000 Genomes Project. Patients were classified by the causative classification system (CCS). Volcano plot and gene ontology (GO) analysis were employed to explore protein differential expression among blood types. Additionally, HT29 and SW480 cell lines with downregulated ABO expression were generated to evaluate its impact on cholesterol uptake and efflux. RESULTS: A greater proportion of stroke patients had non-O blood types (70.46%) than did healthy individuals (61.54%). Notable differences in blood type distributions were observed among stroke subtypes, with non-O blood type patients mainly classified as having large artery atherosclerosis (LAA). Clinical baseline characteristics, such as the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, activated partial thromboplastin time and thrombin time, varied significantly among blood types. A volcano plot revealed 17 upregulated and 42 downregulated proteins in the O blood type. GO term analysis indicated that downregulated proteins were primarily associated with lipid metabolism pathways. In vitro experiments revealed that reducing ABO gene expression decreased cholesterol uptake and increased cholesterol efflux. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that the non-O blood type increased the risk of LAA stroke through cholesterol metabolism.

Background and purpose. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a contagious disease causing severe acute respiratory syndrome which had a catastrophic effect on the world population and resulted in more than 2.9 million deaths worldwide. Epidemiological investigations have recently announced blood type has an association with the incidence of COVID-19 infection. Consequently, research in this regard can be effective in determining a person's susceptibility to a viral infection. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between blood types and the risk of COVID-19 in patients admitted to Khorshid laboratory, Tehran, Iran. Materials and methods. From January to March 2020, 50 nasal and throat swapb samples of patients' secretions were obtained from patients who were admitted to Khorshid laboratory. They were confirmed to have COVID-19 virus RNA and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-ABI, and their blood type was determined simultaneously. After collecting data to determine the relationship between COVID-19 infection and blood type, a confidence interval of 90 % was considered using SPSS 16. Results. The mean age of the patients was measured at 38.4±6.3 years. According to PCR results, 100 % of the subjects with COVID-19 showed blood type A. In addition, the ratio of blood type A to the percentage of reference type O was higher (P=0.009). Conclusion. There was a significant relationship between ABO blood type and susceptibility to COVID-19. As the current study suggests, those with blood type A are at a higher COVID-19 infection risk than those with blood type O.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to identify the blood transfusion rates for several surgical procedures in a single district general hospital and assess the value of preoperative blood type and antibody screen across all relevant surgical procedures. We hypothesized that there was an overuse of blood type and antibody screen in our general surgical population. METHODS: A database containing transfusions of patients who underwent elective- or emergency surgery from January 2015 to September 2020 was matched to a database of preoperative type-and-screen performed in the same period. Registered procedures where the incidence of transfusion is deemed low were excluded. The included procedures were assessed for the intraoperative usefulness of type- and-screen testing. RESULTS: In the included 68.892 surgeries, 36.134 (52.0%) blood samples were preoperatively tested for the blood type and screened for antibodies according to the hospital's routine. Overall 3.517 (5.1%) of surgeries had patients that received a transfusion in the perioperative period and 1.2% (n = 850) during the surgery. CONCLUSION: Most surgeries had a very low incidence of transfusion. Despite this, type-and-screen tests were widely used. This suggests the need for a more focused pre-surgery type-and-screen approach, and a more data driven approach to local guidelines in collaboration with surgical specialties.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Gamma irradiation induces genotoxicity, characterized by the formation of extra-nuclear bodies and left behind during the anaphase stage of cell division, often referred to as a micronucleus (MN). The present work aims to monitor exposure to ionizing radiation as a genotoxic agent in the lymphocytes of workers at radiation energy centers. <b>Materials and Methods:</b> The lymphocyte cytokinesis block micronucleus assay used and analyzed the correlation between the Nuclear Division Index (NDI), age, blood type and the number of micronuclei (MN). Blood samples were collected from 20 volunteers in heparin tubes, exposed to 2 Gy gamma rays and cultured <i>in vitro</i>. <b>Results:</b> A significant difference in the number of micronuclei between blood group A and blood groups A, B and AB. The Nuclear Division Index (NDI) value for lymphocytes of radiation energy center workers after gamma radiation was significant (1.74±0.1) but still within the normal range. Neither MN frequency nor NDI values correlated with age, but MN frequency showed a correlation with blood type. <b>Conclusion:</b> The gamma irradiation did not induce a cytostatic effect but proved genotoxic to the lymphocytes of radiation energy center workers. Notably, blood type A demonstrated higher sensitivity to gamma radiation.

OBJECTIVES: ABO blood types have widespread clinical use and robust associations with disease. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the portability and suitability of tag single-nucleotide polymorphisms (tSNPs) used to determine ABO alleles and blood types across diverse populations in published literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bibliographic databases were searched for studies using tSNPs to determine ABO alleles. We calculated linkage between tSNPs and functional variants across inferred continental ancestry groups from 1000 Genomes. We compared r2 across ancestry and assessed real-world consequences by comparing tSNP-derived blood types to serology in a diverse population from the All of Us Research Program. RESULTS: Linkage between functional variants and O allele tSNPs was significantly lower in African (median r2 = 0.443) compared to East Asian (r2 = 0.946, P = 1.1 × 10-5) and European (r2 = 0.869, P = .023) populations. In All of Us, discordance between tSNP-derived blood types and serology was high across all SNPs in African ancestry individuals and linkage was strongly correlated with discordance across all ancestries (ρ = -0.90, P = 3.08 × 10-23). DISCUSSION: Many studies determine ABO blood types using tSNPs. However, tSNPs with low linkage disequilibrium promote misinference of ABO blood types, particularly in diverse populations. We observe common use of inappropriate tSNPs to determine ABO blood type, particularly for O alleles and with some tSNPs mistyping up to 58% of individuals. CONCLUSION: Our results highlight the lack of transferability of tSNPs across ancestries and potential exacerbation of disparities in genomic research for underrepresented populations. This is especially relevant as more diverse cohorts are made publicly available.

Blood group is a potential genetic element in coronary artery disease. Nevertheless, the relationship between different ABO blood groups and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) is poorly understood. This study verified whether ABO blood group is a potential MINS influencing factor. This retrospective cohort study included 1201 patients who underwent elective non-cardiac surgery and a mandatory troponin test on postoperative days 1 and 2 from 2019 to 2020 at a university-affiliated tertiary hospital. The primary outcome was associations between ABO blood groups and MINS, assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic-regression analyses. Path analysis was used to investigate direct and indirect effects between blood group and MINS. MINS incidence (102/1201, 8.5%) was higher in blood-type B patients than in non-B patients [blood-type B: 44/400 (11.0%) vs. non-B: 58/801 (7.2%); adjusted odds ratio = 1.57 (1.03-2.38); p = 0.036]. In the confounding factor model, preoperative hypertension and coronary artery disease medical history were associated with MINS risk [adjusted odds ratio: 2.00 (1.30-3.06), p = 0.002; 2.81 (1.71-4.61), p < 0.001, respectively]. Path analysis did not uncover any mediating role for hypertension, diabetes, or coronary artery disease between blood type and MINS. Therefore, blood-type B is associated with higher MINS risk; potential mediators of this association need to be investigated.

Background The ABO blood type has been associated with several digestive diseases. Some evidence has shown an association between ABO blood type and clinical outcomes among Asian patients with Crohn's disease. However, there are no reports about the association between ABO blood type and clinical outcomes in ulcerative colitis (UC). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between ABO blood type and clinical characteristics among patients with UC. Methodology The study subjects consisted of 277 Japanese patients with UC. Information on clinical characteristics and ABO blood type data was collected using medical records and a self-reported questionnaire. The information on clinical remission was collected using medical records. The definition of mucosal healing (MH) and partial MH was Mayo endoscopic subscore of 0 or 0-1, respectively. Results Of the enrolled patients, 39.4% (109/277), 18.4% (51/277), 29.2% (81/277), and 13.0% (36/277) had blood types A, B, O, and AB, respectively. The mean current age, age at onset of UC, and body mass index were 51.3 years, 42.1 years, and 22.7 kg/m2, and the proportion of male patients was 59.2% (164/277). The proportion of patients with clinical remission, MH, partial MH, and prednisolone use were 58.1% (161/277), 25.6% (71/277), 63.2% (175/277), and 21.3% (59/277), respectively. Conclusions None of the blood types were associated with any of the variables in this study. Among Japanese patients with UC, ABO blood type might not be associated with clinical characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cost of Rhesus (Rh) testing and prophylaxis for first-trimester vaginal bleeding in the ambulatory setting. STUDY DESIGN: We used time-driven, activity-based costing to analyze tasks associated with Rh testing and prophylaxis of first-trimester vaginal bleeding at one hospital-based outpatient and two independent reproductive health clinics. At each site, we observed 10 patients undergoing Rh-typing and two patients undergoing Rh prophylaxis. We computed the costs of blood Rh-typing by both fingerstick and phlebotomy, cost of locating previous blood type in the electronic health record (available for 69.8% of hospital-based patients), and costs associated with Rh immune globulin prophylaxis. All costs are reported in 2021 US dollars. RESULTS: The hospital-based clinic reviewed the electronic health record to confirm Rh-status (cost, $26.18 per patient) and performed a phlebotomy, at $47.11 per patient, if none was recorded. The independent clinics typed blood by fingerstick, at a per-patient cost of $4.07. Rh-immune globulin administration costs, including the medication, were similar across facilities, at a mean of $145.66 per patient. Projected yearly costs for testing and prophylaxis were $55,831 for the hospital-based clinic, which was the lowest-volume site, $47,941 for Clinic A, which saw 150 patients/month, and $185,654 for Clinic B, which saw 600 patients/month. CONCLUSIONS: Rh testing and prophylaxis for first-trimester vaginal bleeding generates considerable costs for outpatient facilities, even for Rh-positive patients with a prior blood type on record. IMPLICATIONS: Rh testing and prophylaxis for first-trimester bleeding generate considerable costs even for Rh-positive patients and those with a previously known blood type. These findings highlight the need to reconsider this practice, which is no longer supported by evidence and already safely waived in multiple medical settings in the United States and around the world.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Non-O blood types are known to be associated with thromboembolic complications (TECs) in population-based studies. TECs are known drivers of morbidity and mortality in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients, yet the relationships of blood type on TECs in this patient population are unknown. We sought to explore the relationships between ABO blood type and TECs in ICH patients. METHODS: Consecutive adult ICH patients enrolled into a prospective observational cohort study with available ABO blood type data were analyzed. Patients with cancer history, prior thromboembolism, and baseline laboratory evidence of coagulopathy were excluded. The primary exposure variable was blood type (non-O versus O). The primary outcome was composite TEC, defined as pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, ischemic stroke or myocardial infarction, during the hospital stay. Relationships between blood type, TECs and clinical outcomes were separately assessed using logistic regression models after adjusting for sex, ethnicity and ICH score. RESULTS: Of 301 ICH patients included for analysis, 44% were non-O blood type. Non-O blood type was associated with higher admission GCS and lower ICH score on baseline comparisons. We identified TECs in 11.6% of our overall patient cohort. . Although TECs were identified in 9.9% of non-O blood type patients compared to 13.0% in O blood type patients, we did not identify a significant relationship of non-O blood type with TECs (adjusted OR=0.776, 95%CI: 0.348-1.733, p=0.537). The prevalence of specific TECs were also comparable in unadjusted and adjusted analyses between the two cohorts. In additional analyses, we identified that TECs were associated with poor 90-day mRS (adjusted OR=3.452, 95% CI: 1.001-11.903, p=0.050). We did not identify relationships between ABO blood type and poor 90-day mRS (adjusted OR=0.994, 95% CI:0.465-2.128, p=0.988). CONCLUSIONS: We identified that TECs were associated with worse ICH outcomes. However, we did not identify relationships in ABO blood type and TECs. Further work is required to assess best diagnostic and prophylactic and treatment strategies for TECs to improve ICH outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Differences in the blood, resulting from the presence or absence of antigens corresponding to specific blood types, have indirect implications for susceptibility to diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the ABO type and obesity in patients with diabetes mellitus. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional observational study that was conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a simple random method through hospital records during the period between August and September 2022. Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and T2DM were included in this study. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between blood group and obesity. RESULTS: A total of 411 patients were involved in this study. More than half of the patients (54.3%; n= 223) are diagnosed with T1DM. O-positive was the most common blood group type among the patients, accounting for 38.6% (n= 161). Only 23.6% (n= 97) of the patients were classified as having normal weight. Around 32.6% (n= 134) of the patients were classified as having the pre-obesity stage. More than one-third of the patients (35.1%; n= 145) were classified as being obese. There was no statistically significant difference between the patients in terms of their blood type group and its association with obesity (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Many diabetics are overweight or obese, according to this study. This shows the importance of weight management for diabetes treatment. Many patients were overweight, emphasizing the importance of obesity prevention and diabetes care. Most patients were O-positive, according to blood type tests. Previous research suggests that blood types may be linked to diabetes. However, this study found no significant relationships. More research is needed to understand the complex link between blood types, weight, and diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: ABO blood type was hypothesised to be related to a number of infertility processes. There is still an open debate on ABO blood group's incompatibility and infertility. It was associated with ovarian reserve in women with subfertility. There is still not enough information on the influence of blood type and the immunology of follicular fluid (FF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: 78 patients were selected, who underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) between April 2021 and January 2022. FF samples from each individual patient were taken on the day of ovarian puncture and stored at -80°C until immunological assessment. Concentration of chosen interleukins - IL-1α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8 IL-10, IL-15, IL-1ß, IL-18, IFN, LIF, TNFα, GCSF and PIBF-1 were measured using commercially available ELISA kits. RESULTS: All assessed cytokines were present in the FF of exanimated patients. The concentration was compared to the blood type ABO of all women undergoing in vitro fertilization. No statistical relevance was found between blood type ABO and the concentration of GCSF, PIBF1, LIF, IL-15, IL-5, IL-8, IL-1 alfa, IL-1 beta, INF gamma, IL-2HS, IL-4HS, IL-6HS, IL-10HS in the FF obtained during ovarian puncture (p > 0,05). There was no statistically significant correlation between blood type ABO and the quality of embryo, and the positive pregnancy test in patients undergoing IVF/ET. CONCLUSIONS: The blood type ABO does not influence the wide cytokine profile of FF obtained during ovarian puncture in women with infertility of different origin, as well as embryo quality and pregnancy rate.

PURPOSE: Investigating risk factors for amputation in patients with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) and developing a nomogram prediction model. METHODS: We gathered case data of DFU patients from five medical institutions in Anhui Province, China. Following eligibility criteria, a retrospective case-control study was performed on data from 526 patients. RESULTS: Among the 526 patients (mean age: 63.32 ± 12.14), 179 were female, and 347 were male; 264 underwent amputation. Univariate analysis identified several predictors for amputation, including Blood type-B, Ambulation, history of amputation (Hx. Of amputation), Bacterial culture-positive, Wagner grade, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and laboratory parameters (HbA1c, Hb, CRP, ALB, FIB, PLT, Protein). In the multivariate regression, six variables emerged as independent predictors: Blood type-B (OR = 2.332, 95%CI [1.488-3.657], p < 0.001), Hx. Of amputation (2.298 [1.348-3.917], p = 0.002), Bacterial culture-positive (2.490 [1.618-3.830], p <0.001), Wagner 3 (1.787 [1.049-3.046], p = 0.033), Wagner 4-5 (4.272 [2.444-7.468], p <0.001), PAD (1.554 [1.030-2.345], p = 0.036). We developed a nomogram prediction model utilizing the aforementioned independent risk factors. The model demonstrated a favorable predictive ability for amputation risk, as evidenced by its area under the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve of 0.756 and the well-fitted corrected nomogram calibration curve. CONCLUSION: Our findings underscore Blood type-B, Hx. Of amputation, Bacterial culture-positive, Wagner 3-5, and PAD as independent risk factors for amputation in DFU patients. The resultant nomogram exhibits substantial accuracy in predicting amputation occurrence. Timely identification of these risk factors can reduce DFU-related amputation rates.

Several molecular biology methods are available for high-throughput blood typing. In this study, we aimed to build a high-throughput blood-group genetic screening system for high-frequency blood-group antigen-negative rare-blood groups in donors and patients. The amplification primers for all blood-type gene fragments involving the selected alleles were designed for detection. Single-base extend primers were also designed based on specific loci. DNA fragments were detected by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MS) for the last nucleotide identification of amplification products in the extend step. The accuracy was verified by known samples. Thirty-six random samples were detected by serological tests and sequencing to verify the system stability. After verification, according to the collected known rare-blood-type samples, all the alleles designed to be detected matched with the validated single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The verification tests showed that all genotyping results of the random samples were in accordance with the findings of serotyping and sequencing. Then, 1258 random donor samples were screened by the built typing system after the verification. Three Fy(a-) and four s- were screened out in 1258 random blood samples. The multiple polymerase chain reaction-based MS detection system can be used in rare-blood-type screening with good accuracy and stability.

Matching for the rhesus (Rh) blood group is currently not taken into account in the organ allocation system. However, in Rh-mismatched transplantation, the primary concern is the potential for RhD-negative recipients to develop sensitization and produce anti-D anti-bodies if they receive a transfusion of RhD-positive blood. It is estimated that over 80% of RhD-negative recipients may experience Rh allosensitization when exposed to RhD-positive blood, although this occurrence is less common in recipients of solid organs. In theory, RhD-negative recipients who receive organs from RhD-positive donors are at risk of alloimmunization and the production of anti-D antibodies, which could complicate future blood product transfusions. However, our understanding of the impact of donor-recipient Rh mismatch on transplant outcomes, particularly in heart transplantation, is limited. We report a case of successful Rh-mismatched heart transplantation, which was effectively managed through the use of preoperative RhD immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have examined the effect of blood type on heart transplantation (HTx) waitlist outcomes in cohorts through 2015. We aim to analyze the effect of blood type on contemporary waitlist outcomes with a new allocation system focus. METHODS: Adults listed for HTx between April 2015 and December 2020 were included. Survival to HTx and waitlist death/deterioration was compared between type O and non-type O candidates using competing risks regression. Donor/recipient ABO compatibility trends were further investigated. RESULTS: Candidates with blood type O (n = 7509) underwent HTx less frequently than candidates with blood type other than type O (n = 9699) (subhazard ratio [sHR], 0.56; 95% CI, 0.53-0.58) with higher rates of waitlist death/deterioration (sHR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.04-1.34). Subgroup analyses demonstrated persistence of this trend under the new donor heart allocation system (HTx: sHR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.54-0.62; death/clinical deterioration: sHR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.02-1.60), especially among those listed at high status (1, 2, or 3) (HTx: sHR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.63-0.75; death/deterioration: sHR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.16-2.22). Among those listed at status 3, waitlist death/deterioration was modified by presence of a durable left ventricular assist device (left ventricular assist device: sHR, 1.57; 95% CI, 0.58-4.29; no left ventricular assist device: sHR, 3.79; 95% CI, 1.28-11.2). Type O donor heart allocation to secondary ABO candidates increased in the new system (14.5% vs 12.0%; P < .01); post-HTx survival remained comparable between recipients with blood type O and non-type O (log-rank P = .07). CONCLUSIONS: Further logistical considerations are warranted to minimize allocation inequity regarding blood type under the new allocation system.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the O blood type and bleeding tendency in patient undergoing vaginal hysterectomy. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study including all women who had undergone vaginal hysterectomy at our institution between January 2015 and September 2020. All women underwent blood type and complete blood count testing pre- and post-operatively. The estimated intraoperative blood loss, the need for blood transfusion, pre- and postoperative hemoglobin and hematocrit measurements and surgical data were recorded for all patients. Patients with known coagulopathies or those taking antithrombotic medications were excluded from the study. Statistical analysis was performed using student t, χ2, Fischer exact, and ANOVA tests as well as a stepwise logistic regression model. RESULTS: The study included 106 patients (35.2 %) with O and 195 patients (64.8 %) with non-O (i.e., A, B or AB) blood types. The O blood type was significantly associated with a higher risk for moderate blood loss (defined as a pre- to postoperative Hb or HCT drop >2gr or >6 %, respectively) (p = 0.012), but not with severe (defined as a Hb or HCT drop of >3gr or >9 %, respectively) perioperative bleeding, nor with the need for blood transfusion. CONCLUSION: The O blood type was found to be significantly associated with moderate but not with severe intraoperative bleeding during and following vaginal hysterectomy.
