RESUMO

Contemporary, multidisciplinary research sheds light on data privacy implications of artificial intelligence (AI). This review adopts an AI ecosystem perspective and proposes a process-outcome continuum to classify AI technologies; this perspective helps to understand the nuances of AI relative to psychological aspects of privacy decision-making. Specifically, different types of AI affect traditionally studied privacy decision-making frameworks including the privacy calculus, psychological ownership, and social influence in varied ways. By understanding how the process- or outcome-orientation of an AI technology affects privacy decision-making, we explain how AI creates privacy benefits but also poses challenges. Future research is needed across privacy decision-making, but also more generally at the intersection of privacy and AI, to help foster an ethical, sustainable society.

RESUMO

Stochastic Calculus-guided Reinforcement learning (SCRL) is a new way to make decisions in situations where things are uncertain. It uses mathematical principles to make better choices and improve decision-making in complex situations. SCRL works better than traditional Stochastic Reinforcement Learning (SRL) methods. In tests, SCRL showed that it can adapt and perform well. It was better than the SRL methods. SCRL had a lower dispersion value of 63.49 compared to SRL's 65.96. This means SCRL had less variation in its results. SCRL also had lower risks than SRL in the short- and long-term. SCRL's short-term risk value was 0.64, and its long-term risk value was 0.78. SRL's short-term risk value was much higher at 18.64, and its long-term risk value was 10.41. Lower risk values are better because they mean less chance of something going wrong. Overall, SCRL is a better way to make decisions when things are uncertain. It uses math to make smarter choices and has less risk than other methods. Also, different metrics, viz training rewards, learning progress, and rolling averages between SRL and SCRL, were assessed, and the study found that SCRL outperforms well compared to SRL. This makes SCRL very useful for real-world situations where decisions must be made carefully.•By leveraging mathematical principles derived from stochastic calculus, SCRL offers a robust framework for making informed choices and enhancing performance in complex scenarios.•In comparison to traditional SRL methods, SCRL demonstrates superior adaptability and efficacy, as evidenced by empirical tests.

Introduction and importance: Aging exerts various effects on and causes changes to the oral tissues. It is often difficult to distinguish between what is caused by the physiological process of aging itself and what is caused by the individual's lifestyle or diseases. The elderly face peculiar health challenges and require special dental care. It is therefore vital that greater attention be given to the oral health needs of this rapidly population. In this article, the authors present the case of an elderly female patient with a rare case of calculus on the attached gingiva. Case presentation: A 90-year-old retired teacher with a history of hypertension, presented with a small, painless, grayish-brown growth on her attached gingiva, noticed by her daughter-in-law. Examination revealed signs of gingivitis and significant dental issues including missing teeth, fractures, and calculus buildup. Diagnosis of chronic generalized marginal gingivitis and calculus deposition was made, and scaling and polishing were performed. Perforation of the attached gingiva was observed during scaling thus exposing the root, which facilitated the calculus accumulation. Post-procedure care included medication and oral hygiene instructions. Follow-up after 1 week showed satisfactory healing, but subsequent assessment at 3 months revealed plaque accumulation, with the patient declining further treatment. Clinical discussion: The patient shows relative neglect in oral healthcare given the subpar oral health features she exhibited and decline of further treatment options presented to her. This is common in the population as some abnormal oral presentations and features are perceived as normal in the population, which can be attributed to poor knowledge of oral health practices, which affects the illness seeking behaviour of individual. Conclusion: Calculus deposition in the oral cavity requires a hard surface for formation, and proper oral hygiene practices are essential to mitigate its adverse effects, particularly among the elderly who may require additional attention due to their unique physiological changes.

Background: Scaling and root planing (SRP) is an inevitable primary step in non-surgical periodontal therapy. Debridement carried out with manual instruments and ultrasonics results in the removal of tooth structure. Current research revolves around laser as an efficient adjunct to SRP. This study evaluated and compared the effectiveness of root surface calculus removal between ultrasonics and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. Methods: Twenty-eight single-rooted teeth extracted due to periodontal disease were selected for the study. The specimens were randomly assigned to two groups (n=14). Group I underwent ultrasonic instrumentation using a piezo ultrasonic scaler, and group II was subjected to laser instrumentation using Er,Cr:YSGG laser (Waterlase). The specimens were processed, fixed, viewed under a field emission scanning electron microscope and evaluated using the remaining calculus index (RCI) and loss of tooth substance index (LTSI). Results: Ultrasonics-treated specimens revealed more remaining calculus (1.57±0.65) and lost tooth substance (1.71±0.61) compared to the Er,Cr:YSGG laser-treated specimens, with significantly lower RCI (0.71±0.61) and LTSI (1.00±0.56). There was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) in the efficacy of root surface calculus removal between the two groups. Conclusion: Compared to ultrasonics, Er,Cr:YSGG laser demonstrated superior results by causing precise removal of root surface calculus without significantly affecting tooth structure and aiding in new attachment.

A variational approach is proposed to study the Stokes flow in a two-dimensional non-uniform channel. By using the stationarity of the Lagrangian, the Euler-Lagrange equations are established which leads to a simple set of ordinary differential equations to provide an estimate for the average pressure drop explicitly in terms of the channel shape function. The results for the pressure drop show an excellent agreement with the second-order extended lubrication theory. A higher-order formulation further improves the accuracy of the results for the pressure drop along the channel.

Process algebra is one of the most suitable formal methods to model smart IoT systems for smart cities. Each IoT in the systems can be modeled as a process in algebra. In addition, the nondeterministic behavior of the systems can be predicted by defining probabilities on the choice operations in some algebra, such as PALOMA and PACSR. However, there are no practical mechanisms in algebra either to measure or control uncertainty caused by the nondeterministic behavior in terms of satisfiability of the system requirements. In our previous research, to overcome the limitation, a new process algebra called dTP-Calculus was presented to verify probabilistically the safety and security requirements of smart IoT systems: the nondeterministic behavior of the systems was defined and controlled by the static and dynamic probabilities. However, the approach required a strong assumption to handle the unsatisfied probabilistic requirements: enforcing an optimally arbitrary level of high-performance probability from the continuous range of the probability domain. In the paper, the assumption from the previous research is eliminated by defining the levels of probability from the discrete domain based on the notion of Permissible Process and System Equivalences so that satisfiability is incrementally enforced by both Permissible Process Enhancement in the process level and Permissible System Enhancement in the system level. In this way, the unsatisfied probabilistic requirements can be incrementally enforced with better-performing probabilities in the discrete steps until the final decision for satisfiability can be made. The SAVE tool suite has been developed on the ADOxx meta-modeling platform to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach with a smart EMS (emergency medical service) system example, which is one of the most practical examples for smart cities. SAVE showed that the approach is very applicable to specify, analyze, verify, and especially, predict and control uncertainty or risks caused by the nondeterministic behavior of smart IoT systems. The approach based on dTP-Calculus and SAVE may be considered one of the most suitable formal methods and tools to model smart IoT systems for smart cities.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest a role for microscopic crystalline particles of residual dental calculus in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. The purpose of this ex vivo study was to compare the effectiveness of scaling and root planing (SRP) alone versus SRP combined with 24% ethylenediamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) gel in removing calculus from extracted teeth and to determine the optimal length of time for application of the EDTA. METHODS: Specimens consisted of 32 extracted teeth with heavy root calculus. A 4-mm diameter site was prepared on the root surface of each tooth which then underwent SRP. EDTA was applied to four timed groups: 30 s; 60 s; 120 s; and 180 s. Photomicrographs were taken at 40× magnification using white light (WL) and laser fluorescence (LF). Photomicrographs were analyzed using ImageJ. Specimens were also evaluated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: The mean area of residual calculus after SRP was 45%-53% (45.6% ± 19.6% WL, 53.8% ± 19.7% LF). Burnishing with EDTA for one minute following SRP reduced calculus to only 14%-18% (13.9% ± 12.5% LF, 18.2% ± 11.1% WL). Use of EDTA for greater than 1 min showed no further calculus removal. SEM revealed the surface of remaining calculus was altered by burnishing with EDTA. CONCLUSION: SRP alone or SRP + 24% EDTA gel failed to remove all calculus. SRP alone removed >60% of calculus from root surfaces. Adjunctive use of 24% EDTA gel burnished on the root surface removed most of the calculus residual after SRP. Calculus remaining after EDTA burnishing exhibited a significantly altered morphologic appearance.

We consider magnetic Weyl semimetals. First of all we review relation of intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity, band contribution to intrinsic magnetic moment, and the conductivity of chiral separation effect (CSE) to the topological invariants written in terms of the Wigner transformed Green functions (with effects of interaction and disorder taken into account). Next, we concentrate on the CSE. The corresponding bulk axial current is accompanied by the flow of the states in momentum space along the Fermi arcs. Together with the bulk CSE current this flow forms closed Weyl orbits. Their detection can be considered as experimental discovery of chiral separation effect. Previously it was proposed to detect Weyl orbits through the observation of quantum oscillations (Potteret al2014Nat. Commun.55161). We propose the alternative way to detect existence of Weyl orbits through the observation of their contributions to Hall conductance.

This paper deals with a reliability system hit by three types of shocks ranked as harmless, critical, or extreme, depending on their magnitudes, being below H1, between H1 and H2, and above H2, respectively. The system's failure is caused by a single extreme shock or by a total of N critical shocks. In addition, the system fails under occurrences of M pairs of shocks with lags less than some δ (δ-shocks) in any order. Thus, the system fails when one of the three named cumulative damages occurs first. Thus, it fails due to the competition of the three associated shock processes. We obtain a closed-form joint distribution of the time-to-failure, shock count upon failure, δ-shock count, and cumulative damage to the system on failure, to name a few. In particular, the reliability function directly follows from the marginal distribution of the failure time. In a modified system, we restrict δ-shocks to those with small lags between consecutive harmful shocks. We treat the system as a generalized random walk process and use an embellished variant of discrete operational calculus developed in our earlier work. We demonstrate analytical tractability of our formulas which are also validated, through Monte Carlo simulation.

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) represents a severe and acute infection localized in the renal parenchyma and surrounding perirenal area, typically observed in individuals with predisposing factors such as urinary tract obstruction, diabetes mellitus, or compromised immune function. Here, we present a unique case involving a 23-year-old female patient presenting to the emergency department with complaints of discomfort localized to the right side of her abdomen. Despite the absence of diabetes mellitus, the patient was diagnosed with EPN based on clinical presentation and imaging findings. Prompt and effective management was initiated under the care of the urology department, highlighting the importance of early recognition and intervention in mitigating the potential complications associated with this severe infectious process.

Dental calculus is a microbial biofilm that contains biomolecules from oral commensals and pathogens, including those potentially related to cause of death (CoD). To assess the utility of calculus as a diagnostically informative substrate, in conjunction with paleopathological analysis, calculus samples from 39 individuals in the Smithsonian Institution's Robert J. Terry Collection with CoDs of either syphilis or tuberculosis were assessed via shotgun metagenomic sequencing for the presence of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) DNA. Paleopathological analysis revealed that frequencies of skeletal lesions associated with these diseases were partially inconsistent with diagnostic criteria. Although recovery of T. p. pallidum DNA from individuals with a syphilis CoD was elusive, MTBC DNA was identified in at least one individual with a tuberculosis CoD. The authenticity of MTBC DNA was confirmed using targeted quantitative PCR assays, MTBC genome enrichment, and in silico bioinformatic analyses; however, the lineage of the MTBC strain present could not be determined. Overall, our study highlights the utility of dental calculus for molecular detection of tuberculosis in the archaeological record and underscores the effect of museum preparation techniques and extensive handling on pathogen DNA preservation in skeletal collections.

BACKGROUND: Guillain‒Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory peripheral neuropathy caused by autoimmunity. Gangliosides and sulfatides are important components of peripheral nerves. Anti-sulfatide antibody-mediated complement is associated with acute sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy in GBS, which is characterized by pain and paresthesias. CASE PRESENTATION: The child was a 7-year-old girl with headache and abdominal pain, followed by limb numbness and pain. Cranial imaging showed ventricular dilatation, peripheral nerve function conduction examination showed polyradiculopathy, and cerebrospinal fluid tests showed normal cell counts but elevated protein levels, all of which led to the diagnosis of GBS. After treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (400 mg/kg × 5 days), the symptoms did not improve, and muscle strength progressively worsened, accompanied by paroxysmal complexion flushing, heart rate fluctuation, hyperhidrosis, and a progressive increase in cerebrospinal fluid protein (up to 3780.1 mg/L). On the basis of these findings combined with serum anti-sulfatide IgM positivity, anti-sulfatide antibody-related GBS was considered, and treatment with low-dose prednisolone (1 mg/kg/d) led to symptom improvement. CONCLUSIONS: Anti-sulfatide antibody-associated GBS is associated with small fiber peripheral neuropathy. The main manifestations are pain, paresthesias and autonomic dysfunction. In addition to the dysfunction of spinal nerve root absorption caused by increased cerebrospinal fluid protein, autonomic dysfunction may be involved in pain. When the therapeutic effect of immunoglobulin is not satisfactory, a low dose and short course of corticosteroids can be considered, and the prognosis is good.

BACKGROUND: An intrauterine device (IUD) is a contraceptive device placed in the uterine cavity and is a common contraceptive method for Chinese women. However, an IUD may cause complications due to placement time, intrauterine pressure and other factors. Ectopic IUDs are among the most serious complications. Ectopic IUDs are common in the myometrium and periuterine organs, and there are few reports of ectopic IUDs in the urinary bladder, especially in the anterior wall. CASE SUMMARY: A 52-year-old woman was hospitalized due to a urinary bladder foreign body found via abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) examination. The patient had a 2-year history of recurrent abdominal distension and lower abdominal pain, accompanied by frequent urination, urgency, dysuria and other discomfort. Ultrasound examination revealed foreign bodies in the bladder cavity, with calculus on the surface of the foreign bodies. CT revealed a circular foreign body on the anterior wall of the urinary bladder, suggesting the possibility of an ectopic IUD. After laparoscopic exploration, an annular IUD was found in the anterior wall of urinary bladder, and an oval calculus with a diameter of approximately 2 cm was attached to the surface of the bladder cavity. The IUD and calculus were successfully and completely removed. The patient recovered well after surgery. CONCLUSION: Abdominal ultrasound and CT are effective methods for detecting ectopic IUDs. The IUD is located in the urinary bladder and requires early surgical treatment. The choice of surgical method is determined by comprehensively considering the depth of the IUD in the bladder muscle layer, the situation of complicated calculus, the situation of intravesical inflammation and medical technology and equipment.

This article discusses a rare clinical case of differential diagnosis between salivary stone disease and calcinosis, which developed against the background of autoimmune pathology. Diagnosis of these pathologies causes difficulties for practitioners, and treatment methods have fundamental differences. In this regard, the description of this case is relevant and significant. The algorithm of the main and additional research methods to confirm the diagnosis is described.

We apply the direct method of the calculus of variations to show that any nonplanar Frenet curve in R3 can be extended to an infinitely narrow flat ribbon having minimal bending energy. We also show that, in general, minimizers are not free of planar points, yet such points must be isolated under the mild condition that the torsion does not vanish.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the magnitude, direction, and temporal aspects of the force applied during instrumentation with a piezoelectric ultrasonic periodontal scaler, compared this force with recommendations in the literature, and assessed the influence of the profession (dentist or dental hygienist) and calculus hardness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The force applied by ten dental hygienists and six dentists during debridement of comparatively soft and hard artificial dental calculus with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler was recorded in-vitro. The total force and its components in three axes were statistically analysed. RESULTS: During debridement of soft artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.34 N (± 0.18 N, range: 0.13 N to 0.59 N) and by dentists 0.28 N (± 0.33 N, range: 0.06 N to 0.95 N), and the total force exceeded 0.5 N approximately 23% and 14% of the time for dental hygienists and dentists, respectively. During debridement of hard artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.63 N (± 0.40 N, range: 0.28 N to 1.64 N) and by dentists 0.57 N (± 0.17 N, range: 0.34 N to 0.76 N); the total force exceeded 0.5 N more than half of the time for both professions. On average, dental hygienists applied 1.85x (p = 0.04) and dentists 2.04x (p = 0.06) higher force on hard than on soft artificial calculus. However, dental hygienists and dentists used similar forces during the debridement of both hard (p = 1.00) and soft (p = 0.26) calculus. CONCLUSION: The force applied during the debridement of hard artificial dental calculus was statistically significantly higher than during the debridement of soft artificial dental calculus. No statistically significant difference between dentists and dental hygienists was found. The force applied by both groups on soft and hard artificial dental calculus frequently exceeded recommended values.

Autoregressive models in time series are useful in various areas. In this article, we propose a skew-t autoregressive model. We estimate its parameters using the expectation-maximization (EM) method and develop the influence methodology based on local perturbations for its validation. We obtain the normal curvatures for four perturbation strategies to identify influential observations, and then to assess their performance through Monte Carlo simulations. An example of financial data analysis is presented to study daily log-returns for Brent crude futures and investigate possible impact by the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The dissolution of dental calculus, safely and at home, is among the more challenging issues facing the over-the-counter healthcare industry. Pontis Biologics, Inc. has developed novel model of calculus development and structure and has formulated a dentifrice (Tartarase™) using digestive enzymes as active ingredients that is shown to dissolve dental calculus in this Proof of Principle clinical trial. METHODS: This investigation was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel enzyme formulation to remove existing calculus deposits in 4 weeks, measured using the Volpe-Manhold Index (V-MI) on lingual surfaces of 6 lower anterior teeth. The test formulation was compared to Crest Cavity Protection, as a control dentifrice. A total of 40 randomized test subjects began the study with 20 assigned to the control dentifrice and 20 assigned to the Tartarase groups (ten each, one brushing with Tartarase twice daily and one brushed with Tartarase and wore a dental tray filled with Tartarase for 30 min then brushed again with Tartarase, once daily). RESULTS: The Crest group experienced a 12% increase in calculus, in contrast to the results of both Tartarase groups that experienced a 40% reduction in calculus in 4 weeks of unsupervised at home use of the Tartarase toothpaste formulation. CONCLUSIONS: This proof of principle study demonstrates that a dentifrice, formulated along the lines of the Tartarase material, is capable of combating calculus accumulation using the same oral hygiene habits that are common worldwide. Urinary-cutaneous fistulas are typically treated by pediatric urologists and typically arise after surgical interventions. The three atypical cases of acquired urethrocutaneous fistula that we present here have variously resulted from an untreated periurethral abscess to complications of an initial urethral calculi. To prevent an intraoperative surprise, learning from our cases put emphasis on the importance of early intervention and a high index of suspicion for underlying calculi. RESUMO

Preputial calculus is an infrequent manifestation of urolithiasis, primarily observed in ageing individuals with an uncircumcised penis and not maintaining proper hygiene, which can further be complicated by co-morbidities such as phimosis. On the contrary, phimosis and other neurological/urological malformations have also been reported in children to cause preputial calculus. Overall clinical presentations include a palpable mass within the prepuce, dysuria, hematuria, obstructive uropathy, diminished urine flow, and malodorous discharge. This is a case of a 65-year-old male presented with a complaint of obstructed urinary flow. The patient was diagnosed with obstructive uropathy due to the presence of preputial stone/s. This case illustrates both singular and multiple stones in the affected patient. The patient was managed by surgical intervention by circumcision followed by calculus removal. As per the available published literature, this case can be noted as the first report of the largest preputial stone in an elderly in any rural setup of central India.
