The positive chronotropic action induced by 6-nitrodopamine (6-ND) is selectively blocked by ß1-adrenoceptor antagonists at concentrations that do not affect the positive chronotropic effect induced by dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline. Here, the effects of ( ±)-propranolol, ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol, and ( ±)-7-NO2-propranolol were investigated in the rat isolated right atrium. The atrium was mounted in glass chambers containing gassed (95%O2:5%CO2) and warmed (37 °C) Krebs-Henseleit's solution, and the isometric tension registered (PowerLab system). ( ±)-Propranolol, ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol, and ( ±)-7-NO2-propranolol caused concentration-dependent falls in the spontaneous atrial frequency (pIC50: 4.80 ± 0.10, 4.64 ± 0.10, and 4.95 ± 0.10, respectively). The calculated pA2 values for ( ±)-propranolol, ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol, and ( ±)-7-NO2-propranol on noradrenaline-induced positive chronotropism were 8.44 ± 0.08, 6.41 ± 0.07, and 9.21 ± 0.29, respectively. The positive chronotropism induced by 6-ND (10 pM) was blocked by ( ±)-propranolol (1 µM) and ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol (30 nM), whereas ( ±)-7-NO2-propranolol (1 µM) had no effect on 6-ND-induced responses. The pIC50 of ( ±)-propranolol, ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol, and ( ±)-7-NO2-propranolol were significantly shifted to the right in L-NAME-treated atria. The discrepancy between pA2 values of ( ±)-propranolol and its respective pIC50 indicates that the falls in atrial rate induced by ( ±)-propranolol should not be attributed to b-adrenergic antagonism. The reduced chronotropism by ( ±)-propranolol was unaffected by the sodium channel inhibitors tetrodotoxin and lidocaine but that was abolished in atria pre-treated with ( ±)-4-NO2-propranolol. The finding that ( ±)-propranolol reduces spontaneous atrial rate only in concentrations that affect 6-ND-induced positive chronotropism confirms the role of this catecholamine as an endogenous modulator of heart chronotropism. ( ±)-4-NO2-Propranolol behaves as a selective antagonist of 6-ND in the rat isolated atrium.

Gallibacterium anatis is a member of the Pasteurellaceae family and is an opportunistic pathogen that causes gallibacteriosis in chickens. Stress plays a relevant role in promoting the development of pathogenicity in G. anatis. Epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) are relevant to stress; however, their effects on G. anatis have not been elucidated. In this work, we evaluated the effects of E and NE on the growth, biofilm formation, expression of adhesins, and proteases of two G. anatis strains, namely, the hemolytic 12656-12 and the nonhemolytic F149T biovars. E (10 µM/mL) and NE (30 and 50 µM/mL) increased the growth of G. anatis 12656-12 by 20 % and 25 %, respectively. E did not affect the growth of F149T, whereas 40 µM/mL NE decreased bacterial growth by 25 %. E and NE at a dose of 30-50 µM/mL upregulated five fibrinogen adhesins in the 12565-12 strain, whereas no effect was observed in the F149T strain. NE increased proteolytic activity in both strains, whereas E diminished proteolytic activity in the 12656-12 strain. E and NE reduced biofilm formation (30 %) and increased Congo red binding (15 %) in both strains. QseBC is the E and NE two-component detection system most common in bacteria. The qseC gene, which is the E and NE receptor in bacteria, was identified in the genomic DNA of the 12565-12 and F149TG. anatis strains via PCR amplification. Our results suggest that QseC can detect host changes in E and NE concentrations and that catecholamines can modulate the expression of several virulence factors in G. anatis.

RATIONALE: The accumulation of beta-amyloid peptide (Aß) in the forebrain leads to cognitive dysfunction and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that individuals with a consistently cognitively active lifestyle are less vulnerable to Aß toxicity. Recent research has demonstrated that intrahippocampal Aß can impact catecholaminergic release and spatial memory. Interestingly, exposure to novelty stimuli has been found to stimulate the release of catecholamines in the hippocampus. However, it remains uncertain whether repeated enhancing catecholamine activity can effectively alleviate cognitive impairment in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to investigate whether repeated exposure to novelty could enable cognitive resilience against Aß. This protection could be achieved by modulating catecholaminergic activity within the hippocampus. METHODS: To investigate this hypothesis, we subjected mice to three different conditions-standard housing (SH), repeated novelty (Nov), or daily social interaction (Soc) for one month. We then infused saline solution (SS) or Aß (Aß1-42) oligomers intrahippocampally and measured spatial memory retrieval in a Morris Water Maze (MWM). Stereological analysis and extracellular baseline dopamine levels using in vivo microdialysis were assessed in independent groups of mice. RESULTS: The mice that received Aß1-42 intrahippocampal infusions and remained in SH or Soc conditions showed impaired spatial memory retrieval. In contrast, animals subjected to the Nov protocol demonstrated remarkable resilience, showing strong spatial memory expression even after Aß1-42 intrahippocampal infusion. The stereological analysis indicated that the Aß1-42 infusion reduced the tyrosine hydroxylase axonal length in SH or Soc mice compared to the Nov group. Accordingly, the hippocampal extracellular dopamine levels increased significantly in the Nov groups. CONCLUSIONS: These compelling results demonstrate the potential for repeated novelty exposure to strengthen the dopaminergic system and mitigate the toxic effects of Aß1-42. They also highlight new and promising therapeutic avenues for treating and preventing AD, especially in its early stages.

Dynamins are large GTPases whose primary function is not only to catalyze membrane scission during endocytosis but also to modulate other cellular processes, such as actin polymerization and vesicle trafficking. Recently, we reported that centronuclear myopathy associated dynamin-2 mutations, p.A618T, and p.S619L, impair Ca2+-induced exocytosis of the glucose transporter GLUT4 containing vesicles in immortalized human myoblasts. As exocytosis and endocytosis occur within rapid timescales, here we applied high-temporal resolution techniques, such as patch-clamp capacitance measurements and carbon-fiber amperometry to assess the effects of these mutations on these two cellular processes, using bovine chromaffin cells as a study model. We found that the expression of any of these dynamin-2 mutants inhibits a dynamin and F-actin-dependent form of fast endocytosis triggered by single action potential stimulus, as well as inhibits a slow compensatory endocytosis induced by 500 ms square depolarization. Both dynamin-2 mutants further reduced the exocytosis induced by 500 ms depolarizations, and the frequency of release events and the recruitment of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-labeled vesicles to the cell cortex after stimulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors with 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenyl piperazine iodide (DMPP). They also provoked a significant decrease in the Ca2+-induced formation of new actin filaments in permeabilized chromaffin cells. In summary, our results indicate that the centronuclear myopathy (CNM)-linked p.A618T and p.S619L mutations in dynamin-2 affect exocytosis and endocytosis, being the disruption of F-actin dynamics a possible explanation for these results. These impaired cellular processes might underlie the pathogenic mechanisms associated with these mutations.

Biogenic amines are signaling molecules with multiple roles in the central nervous system and in peripheral organs, including the gonads. A series of studies indicated that these molecules, their biosynthetic enzymes and their receptors are present in the testis and that they are involved in the regulation of male reproductive physiology and/or pathology. This mini-review aims to summarize the current knowledge in this field and to pinpoint existing research gaps. We suggest that the widespread clinical use of pharmacological agonists/antagonists of these signaling molecules, calls for new investigations in this area. They are necessary to evaluate the relevance of biogenic amines for human male fertility and infertility, as well as the potential value of at least one of them as an anti-aging compound in the testis.

CO2 exposure has been used to investigate the panicogenic response in patients with panic disorder. These patients are more sensitive to CO2, and more likely to experience the "false suffocation alarm" which triggers panic attacks. Imbalances in locus coeruleus noradrenergic (LC-NA) neurotransmission are responsible for psychiatric disorders, including panic disorder. These neurons are sensitive to changes in CO2/pH. Therefore, we investigated if LC-NA neurons are differentially activated after severe hypercapnia in mice. Further, we evaluated the participation of LC-NA neurons in ventilatory and panic-like escape responses induced by 20% CO2 in male and female wild type mice and two mouse models of altered LC-NA synthesis. Hypercapnia activates the LC-NA neurons, with males presenting a heightened level of activation. Mutant males lacking or with reduced LC-NA synthesis showed hypoventilation, while animals lacking LC noradrenaline present an increased metabolic rate compared to wild type in normocapnia. When exposed to CO2, males lacking LC noradrenaline showed a lower respiratory frequency compared to control animals. On the other hand, females lacking LC noradrenaline presented a higher tidal volume. Nevertheless, no change in ventilation was observed in either sex. CO2 evoked an active escape response. Mice lacking LC noradrenaline had a blunted jumping response and an increased freezing duration compared to the other groups. They also presented fewer racing episodes compared to wild type animals, but not different from mice with reduced LC noradrenaline. These findings suggest that LC-NA has an important role in ventilatory and panic-like escape responses elicited by CO2 exposure in mice.

The aim of this study was to develop a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of 6-cyanodopamine, 6-nitrodopamine, 6-nitrodopa, 6-nitroadrenaline and 6-bromodopamine in human plasma samples. Strata-X 33 µm solid-phase extraction cartridges were used for the extraction of the catecholamines from human plasma samples. The catecholamines were separated in a 150 × 3 mm Shim-pack GIST C18-AQ column with 3 µm particle size, placed in an oven at 40°C and perfused with 82% mobile phase A (acetonitrile-H2O; 90:10, v/v) + 0.4% acetic acid and 18% mobile phase B (deionized H2O) + 0.2% formic acid at a flow rate of 340 µl/min in isocratic mode. The injected volume was 4 µl and the run lasted 4 min. The method was linear from 0.1 to 20 ng/ml and the lower limit of quantification was 0.1 ng/ml for all analytes. The method was applied to evaluate the plasma levels of catecholamines in plasma of patients with chronic kidney disease and allowed the detection for the first time of circulating levels of the novel catecholamines 6-bromodopamine and 6-cyanodopamine.

El feocromocitoma y el paraganglioma son tumores neuroendocrinos secretores de catecolaminas. Los feocromocitomas se originan en la médula suprarrenal, mientras que los paragangliomas son extraadrenales. Se describe una serie de casos de niños con diagnóstico anatomopatológico de feocromocitoma o paraganglioma que consultaron en un hospital pediátrico de alta complejidad de Argentina. Se incluyeron 21 pacientes, 14 varones, con una mediana de edad de 11,4 años; 8 casos con feocromocitoma y 13 casos con paraganglioma. Se presentaron con hipertensión arterial 14/21. La mayoría de los paragangliomas tuvieron localización paraaórtica (9/13). Debido a que representan una causa potencialmente curable de hipertensión arterial, la sospecha clínica es muy importante. El diagnóstico temprano y la instauración de un tratamiento antihipertensivo adecuado, que permita afrontar la cirugía con normotensión arterial, aseguran la curación en la mayoría de los casos si la resección tumoral es completa.

Most paragangliomas were para-aortic (9/13). Since they are a potentially curable cause of hypertension, clinical suspicion is very important. An early diagnosis and the initiation of an adequate antihypertensive treatment, which allows the patient to undergo surgery with normal blood pressure, ensure a cure in most cases if tumor resection is complete.

Background: Tumour-producing catecholamines arise in the adrenal medulla (pheochromocytomas), as well as in extra-adrenal chromaffin cells (paragangliomas). The origin can be from any location; however, it is very rare in the heart. Case summary: A 43-year-old woman with a history of arterial hypertension presented with dyspnoea on moderate exertion, New York Class Association (NYHA) functional classes III and IV, and oedema in the lower extremities. Medical and laboratory evaluation revealed an NT-proBNP of 6046â pg/mL, a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of 15%, longitudinal strain of -7%, and a mass located on the inner surface of the left atrioventricular groove. Surgical intervention was performed, and the tumour was resected. Pathological report showed an extra-adrenal paraganglioma without neoplastic involvement in the margins of the vena cava. After surgery, the patient showed clinical improvement with NYHA functional class I, LVEF of 56%, and longitudinal strain of -20% on transthoracic echocardiography 4 months after treatment. Discussion: Paragangliomas are tumours that are rarely found in the heart, and their diagnosis is difficult. However, early detection and treatment can improve the quality of life of affected patients.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors that have the potential to secrete catecholamines. They have been linked to genetic mutations in the mitochondrial succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) complex. Patients can experience both physical symptoms and psychiatric symptoms like anxiety, depression, and psychosis. These symptoms can occur as paroxysmal episodes with periods of increased catecholamine secretion. We describe a patient with SDHB gene mutation, who has been diagnosed with a jugular paraganglioma, and was brought to the hospital under Baker Act for threats made online. Since diagnosis this patient has been experiencing both anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The patient and a family member report increased emotional lability, and the patient reports multiple daily episodes of anxiousness. This case outlines the connection between paragangliomas and psychiatric symptoms, the impact they can have on patients' daily lives, and the importance of addressing the possibility of these symptoms and establishing a multispecialty healthcare team at the time of diagnosis.

Stress substantially increases the risk of developing painful temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) by influencing the release of endogenous catecholamines. Propranolol, an antagonist of ß-adrenergic receptors, has shown potential in alleviating TMD-associated pain, particularly when the level of catecholamines is elevated. The aim of this study was to explore whether intra-articular propranolol administration is effective in diminishing temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain during repeated stress situations. Additionally, we investigated the effect of repeated stress on the expression of genes encoding ß-adrenoceptors in the trigeminal ganglion. In the present study, rats were exposed to a stress protocol induced by sound, then to the administration of formalin in the TMJ (to elicit a nociceptive response), followed immediately afterward by different doses of propranolol, after which the analgesic response to propranolol was evaluated. We also assessed the levels of beta-1 and beta-2 adrenergic receptor mRNAs (Adrb1 and Adrb2, respectively) using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Our findings revealed that propranolol administration reduces formalin-induced TMJ nociception more effectively in stressed rats than in non-stressed rats. Furthermore, repeated stress decreases the expression of the Adrb2 gene within the trigeminal ganglion. The findings of this study are noteworthy as they suggest that individuals with a chronic stress history might find potential benefits from ß-blockers in TMD treatment.

Communication between the ovaries and the central nervous system occurs by peripheral innervation through the celiac plexus, superior ovarian nerve, and ovarian plexus nerve. The vagus nerve is involved in regulating the ovaries, but the neuroanatomical pathway that links them is not clear. Adult female rats were used for gross anatomy, acetylcholinesterase histochemistry, and the immunofluorescence analysis of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), and tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH). The results obtained indicate that the right vagus nerve (RVN) travels parallel and caudal to the esophagus, where three nerve branches were identified. Also, a right vagal plexus (RVP) formed by microganglia was described, establishing communication with the celiac plexus, and was mainly reactive to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH); some serotoninergic and cholinergic neurons were also found. The left vagus nerve (LVN) travels over the esophagus, bifurcates before its insertion into the stomach and enters the RCG. This neuroanatomical and biochemical description of the RVN and LVN in the rat suggests the RVP is formed by presynaptic catecholaminergic terminals and cholinergic neurons. This information could support detailed studies of communication between the vagus nerve and the ovaries and identify the type of neural signaling involved in abdominal control of the vagus nerve.

Catecholamine stimulation over adrenergic receptors results in a state of hypercoagulability. Chronic stress involves the release and increase in circulation of catecholamines and other stress related hormones. Numerous observational studies in human have related stressful scenarios to several coagulation variables, but controlled stimulation with agonists or antagonists to adrenergic receptors are scarce. This systematic review is aimed at presenting an updated appraisal of the effect of adrenergic receptor modulation on variables related to human hemostasis by systematically reviewing the effect of adrenergic receptor-targeting drugs on scale variables related to hemostasis. By searching 3 databases for articles published between January 1st 2011 and February 16th, 2022 reporting effects on coagulation parameters from stimulation with α- or ß-adrenergic receptor targeting drugs in humans regardless of baseline condition, excluding records different from original research and those not addressing the main aim of this systematic review. Risk of bias assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). Tables describing a pro-thrombotic anti-fibrinolytic state induced after ß-adrenergic receptor agonist stimulation and the opposite after α1-, ß-adrenergic receptor antagonist stimulation were synthesized from 4 eligible records by comparing hemostasis-related variables to their baseline. Notwithstanding this low number of records, experimental interventions included were sound and mostly unbiased, results were coherent, and outcomes were biologically plausible. In summary, this systematic review provides a critical systematic assessment and an updated elaboration, and its shortcomings highlight the need for further investigation in the field of hematology.

Antarctic camps pose psychophysiological challenges related to isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) conditions, including meals composed of sealed food. ICE conditions can influence the microbiome and inflammatory responses. Seven expeditioners took part in a 7-week Antarctic summer camp (Nelson Island) and were evaluated at Pre-Camp (i.e., at the beginning of the ship travel), Camp-Initial (i.e., 4th and 5th day in camp), Camp-Middle (i.e., 19th-20th, and 33rd-34th days), Camp-Final (i.e., 45th-46th day), and at the Post-Camp (on the ship). At the Pre-Camp, Camp-Initial, and Camp-Final, we assessed microbiome and inflammatory markers. Catecholamines were accessed Pre- and Post-Camp. Heart rate variability (HRV), leptin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroxine (T4) were accessed at all time points. Students' t-tests or repeated-measures analysis of variance (one or two-way ANOVA) followed by Student-Newman-Keuls (post hoc) were used for parametric analysis. Kruskal-Wallis test was applied for non-parametric analysis. Microbiome analysis showed a predominance of Pseudomonadota (34.01%), Bacillota (29.82%), and Bacteroidota (18.54%), followed by Actinomycetota (5.85%), and Fusobacteria (5.74%). Staying in a long-term Antarctic camp resulted in microbiome fluctuations with a reduction in Pseudomonadota-a "microbial signature" of disease. However, the pro-inflammatory marker leptin and IL-8 tended to increase, and the angiogenic factor VEGF was reduced during camp. These results suggest that distinct Antarctic natural environments and behavioral factors modulate oral microbiome and inflammation.

This study aimed to verify the effect of different feeding and stocking conditions during 14 days on the gene expression of several hormones and enzymes related to the stress cascade and metabolic parameters in silver catfish Rhamdia quelen under the following experimental conditions: 1) fed at low stocking density (2.5 kg m-3, LSD-F); 2) fed at high stocking density (32 kg m-3, HSD-F); 3) food-deprived at LSD (LSD-FD); and 4) food-deprived at HSD (HSD-FD). Fish from LSD-F and HSD-F groups were fed daily (1 % of their body mass), while fish from food-deprived groups (LSD-FD and HSD-FD) were not fed during the experimental time. Plasma metabolic parameters (glucose, lactate, triglycerides, and proteins) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were evaluated. In addition, mRNA expression of genes related to the stress axis (crh, pomca, pomcb, nr3c2, star, hsd11b2 and hsd20b), heat shock protein family (hsp90 and hspa12a), sodium-dependent noradrenaline transporter (slc6a2), and growth axis (gh and igf1) were also assessed. Specific growth rate and HSI decreased in food-deprived fish regardless of stocking density. The HSD-FD group showed weight loss compared to the HSD-F, LSD-F, and LSD-FD groups. Plasma glucose and triglycerides were reduced in food-deprived groups, while lactate and protein levels did not change. The expression of key players of the stress response (crh, pomca, pomcb, hsd11b2, nr3c2, and hsp90b) and growth (gh and igf1) pathways were differently regulated depending on the experimental condition, whereas no statistical difference between treatments was found for hsd20b, scl6a2, hspa12a, and star mRNAs expression. This study suggests that LSD acts as a stressor affecting negatively the physiological status of fed fish, as demonstrated by the reduction in growth rates, altered metabolic orchestration, and a higher crh mRNA expression. In addition, food deprivation also increased mRNA expression of other assessed genes (nr3c2, hsp90b, pomca, and pomcb) in fish from the HSD group, indicating higher responsiveness to stress in this stocking density when combined with food deprivation.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder whose prevalence has continuously increased worldwide and is associated with dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and, in particular, that of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The objective of this study was to analyze the interaction of DM and the SNS, building a model of sympathectomized diabetic rats to determine alterations in the content of CA (catecholamines) in different intra-abdominal organs. Sympathectomy was conducted with guanethidine (GNT). Additionally, DM was induced with STZ (Streptozotocin). Treatment with GNT decreased norepinephrine (NE) content in all analyzed tissues, with significant differences found in the paraganglia, liver, pancreas, duodenum, and heart compared to the control group. With respect to epinephrine (E), which was only found in the liver, pancreas, and heart, presenting significant differences (p < 0.05) in the heart, a decrease in its concentration was observed for all of the experimental groups with respect to the control. The decrease in dopamine (DA) content due to the GNT−STZ treatment was 30.1% in the heart with respect to the diabetic (STZ) group. The amount of CA in the adrenal medulla indicates the effect of sympathectomy on the GNT group where there was a significant reduction (p < 0.05) of DA. These findings suggest that the elimination of the sympathetic nervous system in diabetic organisms contributed to a decrease in blood glucose; likewise, an alteration in the levels of CA was observed in the different selected organs, possibly attributed to the severity, duration, and pathogenesis of the complications of acute and chronic DM.

To survive, animals must recognize relevant stimuli and distinguish them from inconspicuous information. Usually, the properties of the stimuli, such as intensity, duration, frequency, and novelty, among others, determine the salience of the stimulus. However, previously learned experiences also facilitate the perception and processing of information to establish their salience. Here, we propose "perceptual salience" to define how memory mediates the integration of inconspicuous stimuli into a relevant memory trace without apparently altering the recognition of the physical attributes or valence, enabling the detection of stimuli changes in future encounters. The sense of familiarity is essential for successful recognition memory; in general, familiarization allows the transition of labeling a stimulus from the novel (salient) to the familiar (non-salient). The novel object recognition (NOR) and object location recognition (OLRM) memory paradigms represent experimental models of recognition memory that allow us to study the neurobiological mechanisms involved in episodic memory. The catecholaminergic system has been of vital interest due to its role in several aspects of recognition memory. This review will discuss the evidence that indicates changes in dopaminergic activity during exposure to novel objects or places, promoting the consolidation and persistence of memory. We will discuss the relationship between dopaminergic activity and perceptual salience of stimuli enabling learning and consolidation processes necessary for the novel-familiar transition. Finally, we will describe the effect of dopaminergic deregulation observed in some pathologies and its impact on recognition memory.

RESUMEN El feocromocitoma es un tumor cromafín ubicado generalmente en la glándula suprarrenal, originado en células del neuroectodermo y productor de catecolaminas. Se presenta caso clínico de varón de 56 años con antecedente de hipertensión arterial que consultó por síntomas de un síndrome coronario agudo. La cinecoronariografía descarta cardiopatía isquémica ateroesclerótica y se llegó al diagnóstico de feocromocitoma a partir de los estudios de imágenes y la anatomía patológica. El tumor fue extirpado con cirugía abierta. En la hipertensión arterial de difícil manejo y en patologías cardiacas de presentaciones atípicas, el feocromocitoma debe ser tenido en cuenta como diagnóstico diferencial.
ABSTRACT Pheochromocytoma is a chromaffin tumor generally located in the adrenal gland, originated in neuroectoderm cells and a catecholamine-producing tumor. We present a clinical case of a 56-year-old man with a history of arterial hypertension who consulted for symptoms of an acute coronary syndrome. The coronary angiography ruled out atherosclerotic ischemic heart disease and the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma was reached based on imaging studies and pathology. The tumor was removed with open surgery. In arterial hypertension that is difficult to manage and in cardiac pathologies with atypical presentations, pheochromocytoma must be taken into account as a differential diagnosis.

Introducción. El feocromocitoma es una neoplasia endocrina productora de catecolaminas, poco común, que generalmente se origina en la medula suprarrenal, y rara vez en el tejido cromafín extraadrenal, dándosele el nombre de paraganglioma. Existe una gran variedad de signos y síntomas secundarios a la secreción excesiva de catecolaminas por lo que su diagnóstico y tratamiento oportunos son fundamentales para evitar complicaciones potencialmente fatales. Caso clínico. Paciente femenina de 54 años, con dolor abdominal intermitente y con aumento progresivo, localizado en el cuadrante superior derecho. Por estudios imagenológicos se diagnosticó una gran masa suprarrenal derecha, con pruebas de laboratorio que encontraron niveles de metanefrinas y catecolaminas en orina normales. Discusión. Debido al tamaño del tumor y al íntimo contacto con las estructuras adyacentes, se realizó la resección por vía abierta, sin complicaciones y con una buena evolución postoperatoria. El informe anatomopatológico confirmó el diagnóstico de feocromocitoma suprarrenal derecho. Conclusión. Aunque poco frecuente, el feocromocitoma es una patología que se debe sospechar ante la presencia de masas suprarrenales y alteraciones relacionadas con la secreción elevada de catecolaminas. Se debe practicar el tratamiento quirúrgico de forma oportuna.
Introduction. Pheochromocytoma is a rare catecholamine-producing endocrine neoplasm that generally originates in the adrenal medulla, and rarely in extra-adrenal chromaffin tissue, giving it the name of paraganglioma. There is a wide variety of signs and symptoms secondary to excessive secretion of catecholamines, so its timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to avoid potentially fatal complications. Clinical case. A 54-year-old female patient with intermittent abdominal pain and progressive increase, located in the right upper quadrant. By imaging studies, a large right adrenal mass was diagnosed, with laboratory tests that found normal levels of metanephrines and catecholamines in urine. Discussion. Due to the size of the tumor and the intimate contact with the adjacent structures, the resection was performed by open approach, without complications and with a good postoperative evolution. The pathology report confirmed the diagnosis of right adrenal pheochromocytoma. Conclusion. Although rare, pheochromocytoma is a pathology that should be suspected in the presence of adrenal masses and changes related to elevated catecholamine secretion. Surgical treatment should be performed in a timely manner.
