RESUMO

We asked whether grammatical number marking has specific influence on the formation of early number concepts. In particular, does comprehension of dual case marking support young children's understanding of cardinality? We assessed number knowledge in 77 3-year-old Arabic-English bilingual children using the Give-a-Number task in both languages. Given recent concerns around the administration and scoring of the Give-a-Number task, we used two complementary approaches: one based on conceptual levels and the other based on overall test scores. We also tested comprehension of dual case marking in Arabic and number sequence knowledge in both languages. Regression analyses showed that dual case comprehension exerts a strong influence on cardinality tested in Arabic independent of age, general language skills, and number sequence knowledge. No such influence was found for cardinality tested in English, indicating a language-specific effect. Further analyses tested for transfer of cardinality knowledge between languages. These revealed, in addition to the findings outlined above, a powerful cross-linguistic transfer effect. Our findings are consistent with a model in which the direct effect of dual case marking is language specific, but concepts, once acquired, may be represented abstractly and transferred between languages.

Human cognition is unique in its ability to perform a wide range of tasks and to learn new tasks quickly. Both abilities have long been associated with the acquisition of knowledge that can generalize across tasks and the flexible use of that knowledge to execute goal-directed behavior. We investigate how this emerges in a neural network by describing and testing the Episodic Generalization and Optimization (EGO) framework. The framework consists of an episodic memory module, which rapidly learns relationships between stimuli; a semantic pathway, which more slowly learns how stimuli map to responses; and a recurrent context module, which maintains a representation of task-relevant context information, integrates this over time, and uses it both to recall context-relevant memories (in episodic memory) and to bias processing in favor of context-relevant features and responses (in the semantic pathway). We use the framework to address empirical phenomena across reinforcement learning, event segmentation, and category learning, showing in simulations that the same set of underlying mechanisms accounts for human performance in all three domains. The results demonstrate how the components of the EGO framework can efficiently learn knowledge that can be flexibly generalized across tasks, furthering our understanding of how humans can quickly learn how to perform a wide range of tasks-a capability that is fundamental to human intelligence.

Purpose: This study aimed to clarify the concept of pediatric hospice and palliative care through conceptual analysis. It also sought to identify the differences between related concepts such as pediatric death care and pediatric spiritual care, in order to provide foundational data for the development of nursing theory and knowledge. Methods: A conceptual analysis of pediatric hospice and palliative care was conducted using Rodgers' evolutionary method. Out of 5,013 papers identified, 28 were selected for detailed reading and analysis. Results: Pediatric hospice and palliative care encompasses physical, psychological, social, mental, spiritual, and family care for children with acute and chronic diseases with uncertain prognoses ahead of death, as well as their families. Effective pediatric hospice and palliative care will require multidisciplinary team nursing, effective communication, and supportive policies. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that providing pediatric hospice and palliative care will lead to improvements in pain relief for children and families, the efficiency of responses to death in children, and the quality of life for children and families. The significance of this study is that it clearly clarifies the concept by analyzing pediatric hospice and palliative care using an evolutionary method.

BACKGROUND: How healthcare professionals understand and use concepts of social and cognitive capabilities will influence their behaviour and their understanding of others' behaviour. Differing understandings of concepts might lead to healthcare professionals not acting in accordance with other healthcare professionals' expectations. Therefore, part of the problem concerning errors and adverse incidents concerning social and cognitive capabilities might be due to varying understandings of concepts among different healthcare professionals. This study aimed to examine the variations in how educators at the Copenhagen Academy for Medical Education and Simulation talk about social and cognitive capabilities. METHODS: The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and directed content analysis. The codes for the analysis process were derived from existing non-technical skills models and used to show variations in how the participants talk about the same concepts. RESULTS: Educators with a background as nurses and physicians, talked differently about leadership and decision-making, with the nurses paying greater attention to group dynamics and external factors when describing both leadership and decision-making, whereas physicians focus on their individual efforts. CONCLUSION: We found patterned differences in how the participants described leadership and decision-making that may be related to participants' professional training/background. As it can create misunderstandings and unsafe situations if nurses and physicians disagree on the meaning of leadership and decision-making (without necessarily recognising this difference), it could be beneficial to educate healthcare professionals to be aware of the specificity of their own concepts, and to communicate what exactly they mean by using a particular concept, e.g. "I want you to coordinate tasks" instead of "I want better leadership".

Background: People with Down syndrome (DS) are deficient in verbal memory but relatively preserved in visuospatial perception. Verbal memories are related to semantic knowledge. Receptive ability is better than expressive ability in people with DS but still seriously lags behind their age-matched controls. This lag may result in the weak semantic integration of people with DS. Aims: This study aimed to examine the ability of semantic integration of people with DS by using false-memory tasks. Possible differences in the number of false memories induced by nouns and verbs were of focus. Methods and Procedures: Two phases were involved in the false-memory task. In the study phase, ten-word lists with semantically related associates were presented. In the recognition phase, judgments were to be made about whether the words presented had been heard before. Three types of words were tested: previously presented associates, semantically related lures, and semantically unrelated new words. Outcomes and Results: People with DS overall showed the lowest accuracy among groups in response to tested word types. In the processing of lures, people with DS were worse in recognition than MA controls. In processing unrelated words, people with DS responded least accurately to all types of words compared to control groups. In the processing of associates, people with DS showed similar recognition rates as the MA controls but were less accurate than the CA controls. No difference was observed between nouns and verbs in recognizing word types among groups, though faster responses to nouns than to verbs emerged in college students. Further analyses on topic-wised comparisons of errors across syntactic categories revealed differences in specific concepts among groups, suggesting people with DS were atypical in semantic organization. Conclusions and Implications: People with DS showed mixed patterns in semantic integration by false-memory tasks with delay to associates and deviance to lures together with unrelated words. People with DS showed distinct patterns in processing nouns and verbs while conducting topic-wise comparisons, suggesting that they formed false memories differently based on distinct syntactic categories. We concluded that people with DS develop a deviant semantic structure, hence showing problems in language and social cognition. Category-based rehabilitation is suggested to be implemented for people with DS to improve their semantic knowledge through lexical connections.

BACKGROUND: Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that has been entered into the philosophy of education for a long time. Reviewing the concept of aesthetics in education, we can see the components that can cover a number of challenges in the field of patient education. Focusing on the conceptual dimensions obtained from the analysis of this concept, the aim is matching the resulting conceptual categories with the gaps in the field of patient education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a scoping review, we reviewed the literature dealt with different dimensions of aesthetic-based education. Walker and Avant's concept analysis approach was used to inductively analyze the content obtained from the review of literature. The data were divided into three general groups of antecedents, attributes, and consequences of the aesthetic-based education concept, and the final conceptual model was defined. Interdisciplinary comparisons between educational and medical sciences were made to match the concept of aesthetic education with the field of patient education to cover its issues. During the scope review process of the texts, after screening the articles, 17 articles selected to enter the concept analysis stage. RESULT: Concept analysis phase showed that the main conceptual categories of antecedents of aesthetic-based education are aesthetic-based intrapersonal competencies and aesthetic capacities of educational setting. The attributes include aesthetic-based educational content and teaching methods including unity in diversity, combination with art and being based on empathy. The consequences include subliminal learning and constraint-free learning. These conceptual dimensions can cover four important issues in patient education including patient satisfaction, pedagogical competences of health educators, patient centeredness, and empathetic relationship. CONCLUSION: Applying aesthetic concept in the patient education process can bridge part of the gaps in this process. So, this study can be an introduction to future innovative models based on aesthetic paradigm in the field of patient education.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the concept of Neonatal Near Miss (NNM) using Walker and Avant's method. METHOD: This study employs conceptual analysis following Walker and Avant's model, involving concept selection, objective definition, identification of potential uses, determination of attributes, model case creation, additional case consideration, antecedent identification, consequent analysis, and empirical reference examination. To elucidate the concept, a scoping review was conducted across journals indexed in scientific databases such as Web of Science, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and MEDLINE/PubMed. RESULTS: The analysis encompassed 43 articles, revealing diverse definitions of neonatal near miss across different contexts. A comprehensive definition emerged from identified antecedents: risk of death, susceptibility to adverse outcomes, and potential adverse events. These antecedents were categorized into maternal conditions, neonatal conditions, and healthcare assistance. CONCLUSION: The analysis and definition of the NNM concept was successful, and its antecedents, attributes, and consequences were delineated. IMPLICATIONS: Identifying the risk factors associated with NNM cases may contribute to reducing infant morbidity and mortality and improving the quality of care, facilitating future research and improving the use of the NNM concept.

BACKGROUND: There are several definitions of resilience in health systems, many of which share some characteristics, but no agreed-upon framework is universally accepted. Here, we review the concept of resilience, identifying its definitions, attributes, antecedents and consequences, and present the findings of a concept analysis of health system resilience. METHODS: We follow Schwarz-Barcott and Kim's hybrid model, which consists of three phases: theoretical, fieldwork and final analysis. We identified the concept definitions, attributes, antecedents and consequences of health system resilience and constructed an evidence-informed framework on the basis of the findings of this review. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL Complete, EBSCOhost-Academic Search and Premier databases and downloaded identified titles and abstracts on Covidence. We screened 3357 titles and removed duplicate and ineligible records; two reviewers then screened each title, and disagreements were resolved by discussion with the third reviewer. From the 130 eligible manuscripts, we identified the definitions, attributes, antecedents and consequences using a pre-defined data extraction form. RESULTS: Resilience antecedents are decentralization, available funds, investments and resources, staff environment and motivation, integration and networking and finally, diversification of staff. The attributes are the availability of resources and funds, adaptive capacity, transformative capacity, learning and advocacy and progressive leadership. The consequences of health system resilience are improved health system performance, a balanced governance structure, improved expenditure and financial management of health and maintenance of health services that support universal health coverage (UHC) throughout crises. CONCLUSION: A resilient health system maintains quality healthcare through times of crisis. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, several seemingly robust health systems were strained under the increased demand, and services were disrupted. As such, elements of resilience should be integrated into the functions of a health system to ensure standardized and consistent service quality and delivery. We offer a systematic, evidence-informed method for identifying the attributes of health system resilience, intending to eventually be used to develop a measuring tool to evaluate a country's health system resilience performance.

Robot animals are important for the interpretation of the biological world. In this paper, I show that specific design solutions for robot animal signs usually privilege the overall perception of biological systems (and animal signs in general) as machinic entities, which ignores the role of identity self-generation and sustainability, the hallmark of biological signs. Animal signs are semiotic systems that operate roughly on three subsystems: affordance mapping (related with niche construction and embeddedness), essence categorization, displaying co-enabling relations within the animal system, and sensorimotor autonomy. Of these interrelated systems, the first two are commonly associated with robot animal design and conceptualization, whereas the third one suffers from the unsolved AI design problem of engineering true context-dependent sensitivity. As a result, a semiotic blindness toward biological organisms has derived in dissociated perceptions of robot animals as objects that emulate their biological counterparts through both biomorphic affordance design (biomorphism) and bioinspired task completion. Robot signs are thus confined to the realm of techno myths populating experimental settings narratives, which contributes to a diminishing awareness of biological diversity and animal uniqueness for the construction and preservation of the Umwelt.

BACKGROUND: Organizations face diverse contexts and requirements when updating and maintaining their portfolio, or pool, of systematic reviews or clinical practice guidelines they need to manage. We aimed to develop a comprehensive, theoretical framework that might enable the design and tailoring of maintenance strategies for portfolios containing systematic reviews and guidelines. METHODS: We employed a conceptual approach combined with a literature review. Components of the diagnostic test-treatment pathway used in clinical healthcare were transferred to develop a framework specifically for systematic review and guideline portfolio maintenance strategies. RESULTS: We developed the Portfolio Maintenance by Test-Treatment (POMBYTT) framework comprising diagnosis, staging, management, and monitoring components. To illustrate the framework's components and their elements, we provided examples from both a clinical healthcare test-treatment pathway and a clinical practice guideline maintenance scenario. Additionally, our literature review provided possible examples for the elements in the framework, such as detection variables, detection tests, and detection thresholds. We furthermore provide three example strategies using the framework, of which one was based on living recommendations strategies. CONCLUSIONS: The developed framework might support the design of maintenance strategies that could contain multiple options besides updating to manage a portfolio (e.g. withdrawing and archiving), even in the absence of the target condition. By making different choices for variables, tests, test protocols, indications, management options, and monitoring, organizations might tailor their maintenance strategy to suit specific contexts and needs. The framework's elements could potentially aid in the design by being explicit about the operational aspects of maintenance strategies. This might also be helpful for end-users and other stakeholders of systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines.

Language influences cognitive and conceptual processing, but the mechanisms through which such causal effects are realized in the human brain remain unknown. Here, we use a brain-constrained deep neural network model of category formation and symbol learning and analyze the emergent model's internal mechanisms at the neural circuit level. In one set of simulations, the network was presented with similar patterns of neural activity indexing instances of objects and actions belonging to the same categories. Biologically realistic Hebbian learning led to the formation of instance-specific neurons distributed across multiple areas of the network, and, in addition, to cell assembly circuits of "shared" neurons responding to all category instances-the network correlates of conceptual categories. In two separate sets of simulations, the network learned the same patterns together with symbols for individual instances ["proper names" (PN)] or symbols related to classes of instances sharing common features ["category terms" (CT)]. Learning CT remarkably increased the number of shared neurons in the network, thereby making category representations more robust while reducing the number of neurons of instance-specific ones. In contrast, proper name learning prevented a substantial reduction of instance-specific neurons and blocked the overgrowth of category general cells. Representational similarity analysis further confirmed that the neural activity patterns of category instances became more similar to each other after category-term learning, relative to both learning with PN and without any symbols. These network-based mechanisms for concepts, PN, and CT explain why and how symbol learning changes object perception and memory, as revealed by experimental studies.

RESUMO

This study sought to provide a protocol for searching complex medical cases of grand rounds. A clinical informationist was embedded in gastroenterology grand rounds to use comprehensive search strategies and summarize patients' information through concept mapping. Our proposed protocol classifies into three categories: (1) The general search strategy, (2) The protocol for searching for evidence about rare diseases, and (3) Identifying other resources more than routine medical databases. This approach represents a novel method beyond previous studies which were focused on usual ward rounds to facilitate evidence-based decision-making by providing and simplifying a comprehensive summary view of complex medical cases.

BACKGROUND: Understanding a woman's traumatic birth experience benefits from an approach that considers perspectives from various fields of healthcare and social sciences. AIM: To evaluate and explore the multidisciplinary perspectives surrounding a traumatic birth experience to form a theory and to capture its structure. METHODS: A multidisciplinary advanced principle-based concept analysis was conducted, including the following systematic steps: literature review, assessment of concept maturity, principle-based evaluation, concept exploration and advancement, and formulating a multidisciplinary concept theory. We drew on knowledge from midwifery, psychology, childbirth education, bioethics, obstetric & gender violence, sociology, perinatal psychiatry, and anthropology. RESULTS: Our evaluation included 60 records which were considered as 'mature'. Maturity was determined by the reported concept definition, attributes, antecedents, outcomes, and boundaries. The four broad principles of the philosophy of science epistemology, pragmatics, linguistics, and logic illustrated that women live in a political, and cultural world that includes social, perceptual, and practical features. The conceptual components antecedents, attributes, outcomes, and boundaries demonstrated that a traumatic birth experience is not an isolated event, but its existence is enabled by social structures that perpetuate the diminished and disempowered position of women in medical and institutionalised healthcare regulation and management. CONCLUSION: The traumatic childbirth experience is a distinctive experience that can only occur within a socioecological system of micro-, meso-, and macro-level aspects that accepts and allows its existence and therefore its sustainability - with the traumatic experience of the birthing woman as the central construct.

Resumo Introdução Este artigo apresenta uma abordagem analítica da prática da terapia ocupacional baseada no materialismo histórico dialético, compreendendo que a prática profissional da terapia ocupacional é considerada trabalho no sistema capitalista, podendo ser analisada à luz da Teoria do Processo de Trabalho. Objetivo Propor uma abordagem analítica com o intuito de apoiar o desenvolvimento de práticas de terapia ocupacional emancipatórias, baseadas no diálogo entre a Terapia Ocupacional Social e a Saúde Coletiva Latino-Americana. Método Com base na pesquisa-ação emancipatória, foram realizadas dez oficinas com dez terapeutas ocupacionais visando à produção coletiva de conhecimento. Resultados A atividade humana foi identificada como objeto do processo de trabalho da terapia ocupacional, definida pela categoria trabalho em sua dimensão ontológica. A participação radical foi proposta como o produto intencionado deste processo, sendo entendida como a participação na luta por transformar elementos da determinação social das condições coletivas de trabalho e vida. Os sujeitos desse processo são os terapeutas ocupacionais e os indivíduos, grupos e/ou comunidades acompanhados, todos entendidos como seres sociais em parceria para a transformação social. São identificadas quatro ferramentas teórico-metodológicas: análise emancipatória de atividades humanas, proposição emancipatória de atividades humanas, operacionalização da participação radical e intervenções sobre o tecido social. Conclusão A terapia ocupacional como prática social oferece uma contribuição específica para o desenvolvimento de uma práxis revolucionária coletiva que, voltada para a realização de uma utopia concreta, poderá gerar os meios para produzir uma nova sociedade.


Abstract Introduction This paper presents an analytical approach to occupational therapy practice grounded in historical dialectical materialism. It understands occupational therapy professional practice as work within a capitalist system, and thus subject to analysis through the labor process theory. Objective To propose an analytical approach to occupational therapy practice aimed at supporting the development of an emancipatory practice framework based on the dialogue between Social Occupational Therapy and Latin American Collective Health. Method Utilizing emancipatory action research methodologies, this study conducted 10 workshops with 10 occupational therapists aimed at collective knowledge production. Results Human activity is identified as the object of occupational therapy working process, defined by the category work in its ontological dimension. Radical participation is set as the intended product of this process, which entails engaging in efforts to transform the social determination of collective living conditions. The individuals in this process include occupational therapists and the followed-up individuals, groups, and/or communities, all viewed as social beings collaborating toward social transformation. Four theoretical-methodological tools are identified: emancipatory analysis of human activities, emancipatory proposition of human activities, operationalization of radical participation, and interventions in the social fabric. Conclusion Occupational therapy, as a form of social practice, offers a specific contribution to the development of a collective revolutionary praxis. This praxis, aimed at realizing a concrete utopia, seeks to generate the means to create a new society.


Resumen Introducción Este artículo presenta una aproximación analítica a la práctica de la terapia ocupacional basada en el materialismo histórico dialéctico. Entiende la práctica profesional de terapia ocupacional como trabajo bajo el capitalismo y, como tal, puede ser analizada bajo la teoría del proceso de trabajo. Objetivo Proponer un enfoque analítico de la práctica de la terapia ocupacional con la intención de apoyar el desarrollo posterior de un marco para la práctica de la terapia ocupacional emancipadora basada en el dialogo entre la Terapia Ocupacional Social y la Salud Colectiva Latinoamericana. Método A partir de una investigación acción emancipadora, se realizaron 10 talleres con diez terapeutas ocupacionales con el objetivo de la producción colectiva de conocimiento. Resultados La actividad humana es identificada como objeto del proceso de trabajo de la terapia ocupacional, definida por la categoría trabajo en su dimensión ontológica. La participación radical se establece como el producto previsto del proceso, es decir, la participación en la lucha por los elementos transformadores de la determinación social de las condiciones de vida colectivas. Los sujetos del proceso de trabajo son los terapeutas ocupacionales y los individuos, grupos y/o comunidades acompañados, todos entendidos como seres sociales en colaboración para la transformación social. Se identifican cuatro herramientas teórico-metodológicas: análisis emancipatorio de las actividades humanas, propuesta emancipadora de las actividades humanas, operacionalización de la participación radical e intervenciones en el tejido social. Conclusión La terapia ocupacional como práctica social ofrece una contribución específica al desarrollo de una praxis revolucionaria colectiva que, dirigida a realizar una utopía concreta, puede generar los medios para producir una nueva sociedad.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the concept of oral hygiene self-care and develop a new problem-focused nursing diagnosis (ND) based on the NANDA-I terminology. METHOD: A concept analysis was performed based on the Walker and Avant framework, including a scoping review phase according to the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Scopus, Web of Science, Virtual Health Library, and specific gray literature databases. The development of the diagnostic structure followed the NANDA-I guidelines with a focus on Orem's self-care theory. RESULTS: Including 51 studies, the analysis facilitated the formulation of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of oral hygiene self-care. The ND "Oral hygiene self-care deficit" was created and included 17 defining characteristics, 9 related factors, 5 associated conditions, and 5 high-risk populations. Two cases were constructed to illustrate the use of key terms. CONCLUSIONS: The conceptual analysis provided insight into the concept of oral hygiene self-care and supported the structure of a new ND. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: This study contributes to the implementation of the nursing process by focusing on the identification of individuals with oral hygiene self-care deficit. It will facilitate the promotion of oral health, thereby impacting the individual's quality of life. In addition, it will aid in the development of public policy for the prevention of oral diseases.

BACKGROUND: According to the significance of patient education, new conceptual models are constantly required to promote pedagogical competences of health educators. In the field of educational sciences, aesthetic-based education is known as one of the effective types of curriculum planning which has shown many positive pedagogical outcomes. Thus, the researcher's assumption is that, the concept of "aesthetic education" could be transposed from educational sciences to health sciences in order to develop a new formula in the patient education process. The purpose of this study is to explain methods in detail, to develop an aesthetic-based patient education conceptual model through the concept derivation strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1. Scoping review and inductive data analysis using Walker and Avant's approach to achieve conceptual categories of the concept "aesthetic education." 2. Semi-structured qualitative interviews and directed content analysis to extract the main categories of the concept "aesthetics in the patient education process." 3. Drawing an aesthetic-based patient education conceptual model by allocating new conceptual components to each general step of the patient education process, including needs assessment, goal setting, implementation, and evaluation. 4. Modified Delphi technique to validate the final conceptual model. RESULTS: The first phase will represent the main categories and subcategories of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of "aesthetic education." The second phase will show the main categories and subcategories of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of the new concept named "aesthetic-based patient education." In the third phase, it is expected to achieve a new conceptual model representing the components of aesthetics in the general steps of the patient education process. The fourth phase will propose the final validated conceptual model. CONCLUSIONS: The provided study protocol can be a road map to developing derivative models through concept derivation strategy in health sciences.

OBJETIVO: Elaborar una propuesta reflexiva conceptual sobre la trascendencia espiritual y sus implicaciones para enfermería. CONTENIDO: En el presente artículo se realizó una reflexión teórica sobre el fenómeno de la trascendencia espiritual y la construcción interpretativa del concepto destacando revisión de sus atributos que permiten su comprensión. Se incluyen los principales atributos conceptuales y se reflexiona sobre la trascendencia espiritual en enfermería, entendida como una capacidad motivada de manera intrínseca en la persona frente a situaciones vitales, esta capacidad le permite conectar con la situación y buscar sobrepasarla a partir de su sentido de espiritualidad. CONCLUSIONES: La trascendencia espiritual involucra el camino que puede llevar a la persona a una comprensión de situaciones contemplativas y de dificultad y a la vez a contemplar la vida y la existencia de una forma armónica y esta capacidad puede ser promovida en el cuidado de la enfermera.


OBJECTIVE: To elaborate a conceptual reflective proposal on spiritual transcendence and its implications for nursing. CONTENT: In this article, a theoretical reflection on the phenomenon of spiritual transcendence and the interpretative construction of the concept was carried out, highlighting a review of its attributes that further contributed to its understanding. The main conceptual attributes of spiritual transcendence are included and its implications for nursing reflected upon. Spiritual transcendence is understood as an intrinsically motivated capacity in the person in the face of life situations, a capacity that allows him/her to connect with the situation and seek to overcome it based on his/her sense of spirituality. CONCLUSIONS: Spiritual transcendence provides a path that can lead the person to an understanding of difficult situations, while allowing time to contemplate life and existence in a harmonious way. This is a capacity that can be promoted in nursing care.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to derive a conceptual definition and attributes for nursing students' rights in clinical practice in South Korea. METHODS: This concept-analysis study was conducted at a nursing school in South Korea. The participants were recruited using purposive sampling. The inclusion criteria were being a fourth-year nursing student and having two or more semesters of practical experience. The hybrid model used in this study had three stages. First, 12 studies were reviewed during the theoretical stage. Second, 10 in-depth interviews were conducted during the fieldwork stage. Third, in the analytical stage, the concept of nursing students' rights related to clinical practice was defined and the attributes were derived. RESULTS: The analysis established five attributes of nursing students' rights: the right to learn, the right to be protected from infections and accidents, the right to be cared for and supported, the right to be respected, and the right to be recognized as a member of a nursing team. A key theme that emerged from this study was having the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to develop a measurement tool based on the above five attributes and to verify its effectiveness.

RESUMO

This editorial presents eight concept analysis methods for use in nursing research and education. In addition to the two classical methods of Walker and Avant's and Rodgers' concept analysis approaches that are typically utilized in nursing education and briefly discussed within this editorial, six additional methods are also presented including Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's Hybrid model, Chinn and Kramer's approach, Simultaneous Concept Analysis, Pragmatic Utility, Principle-Based Concept Analysis, and Semantic Concept Analysis. By familiarizing nursing educators, researchers, and students with these methods, educators can enhance their critical thinking and understanding of complex nursing concepts, preparing them for enhanced, multi-faceted contributions to nursing science.

BACKGROUND: Cultural competence is considered one of the criteria for high-quality nursing care. AIM: This study aimed to analyse cultural competence in nursing. METHODS: This study was performed using the hybrid concept analysis approach in three phases. In the theoretical phase, literature was reviewed by searching Persian and English language databases, and 94 articles were included. In the second or fieldwork phase, 11 semi-structured interviews were conducted with purposefully selected nurses. The results of both theoretical and fieldwork phases were analysed using conventional content analysis, and in the final analysis phase, the results of the previous phases were triangulated. RESULTS: The attributes of cultural competence were obtained in the theoretical phase in six and the fieldwork phase in three categories. In the final phase, the categories obtained in both previous phases were triangulated: cultural competence in nursing is a continuous, developmental, flexible, extensive and complex process that is patient- and justice-oriented and emerges through learning and skills acquisition, including cultural knowledge, attitudes and practices. CONCLUSION: Managers and planners of nursing education can use the results of this study to educate nursing students and nurses and evaluate outcomes as one of the criteria for quality care.
