RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recent research introduced the concept of the "line of convergence" as a guide for injectors to enhance precision and avoid complications when treating the frontalis muscle with toxins. However, currently, no pre-injection ultrasound scanning is employed to increase precision and reduce adverse events when searching for the line of convergence. OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility and practicality of implementing pre-injection ultrasound scanning into aesthetic neuromodulator treatments of the forehead. METHODS: The sample of this study consisted of n = 55 volunteers (42 females and 13 males), with a mean age of 42.24 (10.3) years and a mean BMI of 25.07 (4.0) kg/m2. High-frequency ultrasound imaging was utilized to measure the thickness, length, and contractility of the frontal soft tissue and to determine the precise location of the line of convergence during maximal frontalis muscle contraction. RESULTS: The results revealed that the line of convergence was located at 58.43% (8.7) of the total forehead height above the superior border of the eyebrow cilia without a statistically significant difference between sex, age, or BMI. With frontalis muscle contraction, the forehead shortens in males by 25.90% (6.5), whereas in females it shortens only by 21.74% (5.1), with p < 0.001 for sex differences. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated the feasibility and practicality of pre-injection ultrasound scanning for facial aesthetic neuromodulator treatments. Knowing the location of the line of convergence, injectors can determine precisely and on an individual basis where to administer the neuromodulator deep or superficial or when the injection location is at risk to cause eyebrow ptosis.

RESUMO

Phenotypic traits can evolve independently at different stages of ontogeny, optimizing adaptation to distinct ecological contexts and increasing morphological diversity in species with complex life cycles. Given the relative independence resulting from the profound changes induced by metamorphosis, niche occupation and resource utilization in tadpoles may prompt evolutionary responses that do not necessarily affect the adults. Consequently, diversity patterns observed in the larval shape may not necessarily correspond to those found in the adult shape for the same species, a premise that can be tested through the Adaptive Decoupling Hypothesis (ADH). Herein, we investigate the ADH for larval and adult shape differentiation in Neoaustrarana frogs. Neoaustrarana frogs, particularly within the Cycloramphidae family, exhibit remarkable diversity in tadpole morphology, making them an ideal model for studying adaptive decoupling. By analyzing 83 representative species across four families (Alsodidae, Batrachylidae, Cycloramphidae, and Hylodidae), we generate a morphological dataset for both larval and adult forms. We found a low correlation between larval and adult shapes, species with a highly distinct larval shape having relatively similar shape when adults. Larval morphological disparity is not a good predictor for adult morphological disparity within the group, with distinct patterns observed among families. Differences between families are notable in other aspects as well, such as the role of allometric components influencing shape and morphospace occupancy. The larval shape has higher phylogenetic structure than the adult. Evolutionary convergence emerges as a mechanism of diversification for both larval and adult shapes in the early evolution of neoaustraranans, with shape disparity of tadpoles reaching stable levels since the Oligocene. The widest occupation in morphospace involves families associated with dynamically changing environments over geological time. Our findings support the ADH driving phenotypic diversity in Neoaustrarana, underscoring the importance of considering ontogenetic stages in evolutionary studies.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The convergence of hypervirulence and carbapenem resistance in the bacterial pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae represents a critical global health concern. Hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKp) strains, frequently from sequence type 23 (ST23) and having a K1 capsule, have been associated with severe community-acquired invasive infections. Although hvKp were initially restricted to Southeast Asia and primarily antibiotic-sensitive, carbapenem-resistant hvKp infections are reported worldwide. Here, within the carbapenemase production Enterobacterales surveillance system headed by the Chilean Public Health Institute, we describe the isolation in Chile of a high-risk ST23 dual-carbapenemase-producing hvKp strain, which carbapenemase genes are encoded in a single conjugative plasmid. RESULTS: Phenotypic and molecular tests of this strain revealed an extensive resistance to at least 15 antibiotic classes and the production of KPC-2 and VIM-1 carbapenemases. Unexpectedly, this isolate lacked hypermucoviscosity, challenging this commonly used hvKp identification criteria. Complete genome sequencing and analysis confirmed the K1 capsular type, the KpVP-1 virulence plasmid, and the GIE492 and ICEKp10 genomic islands carrying virulence factors strongly associated with hvKp. Although this isolate belonged to the globally disseminated hvKp clonal group CG23-I, it is unique, as it formed a clade apart from a previously reported Chilean ST23 hvKp isolate and acquired an IncN KPC-2 plasmid highly disseminated in South America (absent in other hvKp genomes), but now including a class-I integron carrying blaVIM-1 and other resistance genes. Notably, this isolate was able to conjugate the double carbapenemase plasmid to an E. coli recipient, conferring resistance to 1st -5th generation cephalosporins (including combinations with beta-lactamase inhibitors), penicillins, monobactams, and carbapenems. CONCLUSIONS: We reported the isolation in Chile of high-risk carbapenem-resistant hvKp carrying a highly transmissible conjugative plasmid encoding KPC-2 and VIM-1 carbapenemases, conferring resistance to most beta-lactams. Furthermore, the lack of hypermucoviscosity argues against this trait as a reliable hvKp marker. These findings highlight the rapid evolution towards multi-drug resistance of hvKp in Chile and globally, as well as the importance of conjugative plasmids and other mobile genetic elements in this convergence. In this regard, genomic approaches provide valuable support to monitor and obtain essential information on these priority pathogens and mobile elements.

RESUMO

In this study, we present a comprehensive atmospheric radiocarbon (14C) record spanning from 1940 to 2016, derived from 77 single tree rings of Cedrela odorata located in the Eastern Amazon Basin (EAB). This record, comprising 175 high-precision 14C measurements obtained through accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), offers a detailed chronology of post-1950 CE (Common Era) 14C fluctuations in the Tropical Low-Pressure Belt (TLPB). To ensure accuracy and reliability, we included 14C-AMS results from intra-annual successive cuts of the tree rings associated to the calendar years 1962 and 1963 and conducted interlaboratory comparisons. In addition, 14C concentrations in 1962 and 1963 single-year cuts also allowed to verify tissue growth seasonality. The strategic location of the tree, just above the Amazon River and estuary areas, prevented the influence of local fossil-CO2 emissions from mining and trade activities in the Central Amazon Basin on the 14C record. Our findings reveal a notable increase in 14C from land-respired CO2 starting in the 1970s, a decade earlier than previously predicted, followed by a slight decrease after 2000, signaling a transition towards the fossil fuel era. This shift is likely attributed to changes in reservoir sources or global atmospheric dynamics. The EAB 14C record, when compared with a shorter record from Muna Island, Indonesia, highlights regional differences and contributes to a more nuanced understanding of global 14C variations at low latitudes. This study not only fills critical spatial gaps in existing 14C compilations but also aids in refining the demarcation of 14C variations over South America. The extended tree-ring 14C record from the EAB is pivotal for reevaluating global patterns, particularly in the context of the current global carbon budget, and underscores the importance of tropical regions in understanding carbon-climate feedbacks.

RESUMO

This paper presents the graphical results of the Lagrangian-model and the weathering processes associated with oil spills in the tropical South Atlantic, taking into account the meteorological and oceanographic conditions of the study region. The scenarios were created in the Brazilian-NE waters adjacent, with simulation times of 670 h, and densities of 35, 25, and 15API with volume of 1590 m3 were considered. The main results showed that the meteo-oceanographic characteristics of the study region influence the trajectories and weathering processes in the oil spill. The trajectories varied for each launch point and reached the continent severely in January and October. The associated weathering processes showed higher rates in September and lower rates in April, indicative of the influence of phenomena such as Intertropical Tropical Convergence Zone and warm pool in the South Atlantic region. Sea surface temperature and wind speed are key factors that correlate positively with these months.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: A general view in the study of pollination syndromes is that floral traits usually represent convergent floral adaptations to specific functional pollinator groups. However, the definition of convergence is elusive and contradictory in the literature. Is convergence the independent evolution of either the same trait or similar traits with the same function? A review of the concept of convergence in developmental biology and phylogenetic systematics may shed new light in studies of pollination syndromes. SCOPE: The aims of this article are (1) to explore the notion of convergence and other concepts (analogy, homoplasy and parallelism) within the theory and practice of developmental evolution and phylogenetic systematics; (2) to modify the definitions of syndromes in order to embrace the concepts of analogy and convergence; (3) to revisit the bat pollination syndrome in the context of angiosperm phylogeny, with focus on the showy 'petaloid' organs associated with the syndrome; (4) to revisit the genetic-developmental basis of flower colour; (5) to raise evolutionary hypotheses of floral evolution associated with the bat pollination syndrome; and (6) to highlight some of the current frontiers of research on the origin and evolution of flowers and its impact on pollination syndrome studies in the 21st century. CONCLUSIONS: The inclusion of the concepts of analogy and convergence within the concept of syndromes will constitute a new agenda of inquiry that integrates floral biology, phylogenetic systematics and developmental biology. Phyllostomid and pteropodid bat pollination syndrome traits in eudicots and monocots represent cases of analogous and convergent evolution. Pollination syndromes are a multivariate concept intrinsically related to the understanding of flower organogenesis and evolution. The formulation of hypotheses of pollination syndromes must consider the phylogenetic levels of universality for both plant and animal taxa, flower development, genetics, homology and evolution, and a clear definition of evolutionary concepts, including analogy, convergence, homoplasy and parallelism.

RESUMO

This research addresses the power flow analysis in bipolar asymmetric direct current (DC) networks by applying Broyden's numerical method. This general successive approximations method allows for a simple Newton-based recursive formula to reach the roots of multiple nonlinear equations. The main advantage of Broyden's approach is its simple but efficient structure which can be applied to real complex nonlinear equations. The power flow problem in bipolar DC networks is still challenging, as multiple operating options must be considered, e.g., the possibility of having a solidly grounded or floating neutral wire. The main goal of this research is to contribute with a generalization of Broyden's method for the power flow solution in bipolar DC networks, with the main advantage that, under well-defined conditions, this is a numerical method equivalent to the matricial backward/forward power flow, which is equivalent to the successive approximations power flow method. Numerical results in the 21-, 33-, and 85-bus grids while considering two connections for the neutral wire (i.e., solidly grounded at any node or floating) show the effectiveness of Broyden's method in the power flow solution for bipolar asymmetric DC networks. All numerical simulations were carried out in the MATLAB programming environment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: this research compared the dissociated phoria at near and distance fixation in free space using the Howell test, alternate Cover test, and Thorington test. METHODS: 220 healthy Mexican children (mean age 8.3±2.5 years) participated in this study. Phorias were quantified at both distances using each test, from the least to the most disruptive. The stereopsis degree and near point of convergence (break/recovery) were analyzed to understand their role in the visual system's sensorimotor balance. RESULTS: statistically significant differences were found among techniques, with a higher congruence for the EF. However, only the Howell and Thorington tests can be interchanged. The break value and near exophoria relate to each other and affect the stereopsis degree, whereas age is associated with the stereopsis degree and break value. CONCLUSIONS: the three techniques cannot be interchanged except for the Howell and Thorington test for the EF at far. The differences in the mode of dissociation could relate to the results.

RESUMO

Living species vary significantly in phenotype and genomic content. Sophisticated statistical methods linking genes with phenotypes within a species have led to breakthroughs in complex genetic diseases and genetic breeding. Despite the abundance of genomic and phenotypic data available for thousands of species, finding genotype-phenotype associations across species is challenging due to the non-independence of species data resulting from common ancestry. To address this, we present CALANGO (comparative analysis with annotation-based genomic components), a phylogeny-aware comparative genomics tool to find homologous regions and biological roles associated with quantitative phenotypes across species. In two case studies, CALANGO identified both known and previously unidentified genotype-phenotype associations. The first study revealed unknown aspects of the ecological interaction between Escherichia coli, its integrated bacteriophages, and the pathogenicity phenotype. The second identified an association between maximum height in angiosperms and the expansion of a reproductive mechanism that prevents inbreeding and increases genetic diversity, with implications for conservation biology and agriculture.

RESUMO

The Latin America region comprises several countries that do not follow harmonized regulatory requirements for drug product (DP) marketing authorization applications (MAA), resulting in customized registration dossiers for each country. Here, we established a core dossier for multiple MAA in the Latin America region by examining the similarities between regulatory requirements and reconciling their potential discrepancies through discussions among all national regulatory representatives. The core dossier was used in the submission of a new small molecule, NME1, to nine markets. Assessment of the process included the time to submission; the timing, number, and complexity of questions received; and timing of final national regulatory agencies (NRA) evaluation decisions. The core dossier resulted in an accelerated submission timeline for most markets and earlier receipt of NRA queries from some markets, compared with projections. One round of queries of a low or medium complexity was received from all agencies. The receipt of final NRA evaluation decisions was also accelerated in most markets, compared with the best-case approval timeframes. The core dossier approach was also evaluated against the standard submission of a similar small molecule, NME2. In contrast to the core dossier submission of NME1, a second round of questions, and high-complexity questions were received from two markets for NME2. In conclusion, a core dossier has the potential to simplify the regulatory process for both reviewers and applicants in regions that do not share harmonized regulatory requirements, with a consequential acceleration of DP approvals.

RESUMO

Glucosamine-6-phosphate (GlcN6P) deaminases from Escherichia coli (EcNagBI) and Shewanella denitrificans (SdNagBII) are special examples of what constitute nonhomologous isofunctional enzymes due to their convergence, not only in catalysis, but also in cooperativity and allosteric properties. Additionally, we found that the sigmoidal kinetics of SdNagBII cannot be explained by the existing models of homotropic activation. This study describes the regulatory mechanism of SdNagBII using enzyme kinetics, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and X-ray crystallography. ITC experiments revealed two different binding sites with distinctive thermodynamic signatures: a single binding site per monomer for the allosteric activator N-acetylglucosamine 6-phosphate (GlcNAc6P) and two binding sites per monomer for the transition-state analog 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-glucitol 6-phosphate (GlcNol6P). Crystallographic data demonstrated the existence of an unusual allosteric site that can bind both GlcNAc6P and GlcNol6P, implying that the homotropic activation of this enzyme arises from the occupation of the allosteric site by the substrate. In this work we describe the presence of this novel allosteric site in the SIS-fold deaminases, which is responsible for the homotropic and heterotropic activation of SdNagBII by GlcN6P and GlcNAc6P, respectively. This study unveils an original mechanism to generate a high degree of homotropic activation in SdNagBII, mimicking the allosteric and cooperative properties of hexameric EcNagBI but with a reduced number of subunits.

RESUMO

Among the environmental economics research issues, the issue of convergence has received quite a lot of attention, which is also known as stationary analysis. In this research strand, whether shocks to the time series variable are permanent or temporary is tested via the unit root tests. In this study, based on the theory and empirical works of stochastic convergence, we evaluate the convergence for the BASIC member countries, including Brazil, South Africa, India, and China. We use a variety of methodologies to see whether the convergence of ecological footprint holds for these countries or not. We first use the wavelet decomposition technique to decompose the series into the short run, middle run, and long run, and then we run several unit root tests to confirm the stationarity property of the series. The methodologies implemented in this study allow us to apply econometric tests to the original series as well as to the decomposed series. The results of panel CIPS test demonstrate that the null hypothesis of unit root could be rejected for the short run but not for the middle and long run, implying that long-lasting impact might prevail due to any shocks to the ecological footprint in the middle and long run. The results for individual countries varied.

RESUMO

The ecological footprint has currently become a highly popular environmental performance indicator. It provides the basis for setting goals, identifying options for action, and tracking progress toward stated goals. Because the examination of the existence of convergence is important for the climate change protection of the earth, the convergence of ecological footprint and its subcomponents are a major concern for scholars and policymakers. To this end, this study aims to investigate the stochastic convergence of ecological footprint and its subcomponents. We employ the recently developed Hepsag (2021) unit root test that allows nonlinearity and smooth structural change simultaneously to study stochastic convergence in per-capita ecological footprint over the period 1961-2018 for the most polluting countries. The results provide mixed evidence of the presence of stochastic convergence in conventional unit root tests such as ADF, KPSS and Fourier KPSS. According to the Hepsag (2021) unit root test results for all countries, built-up land footprint converges except Australia, Malaysia, Poland, and Turkey. Carbon footprint converges for Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. Cropland footprint converges for Australia, Canada, China, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, the UK, and Vietnam. Fishing grounds footprint converges in Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, and Vietnam. Forest product footprint converges in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Turkey, and Vietnam. Grazing land footprint converges in Canada, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam. And lastly, the total ecological footprint converges in Canada, France, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, South Africa, the UK, and the USA.

RESUMO

Developmental pathways encompass transcription factors and cis-regulatory elements that interact as transcription factor-regulatory element (TF-RE) units. Independent origins of similar phenotypes likely involve changes in different parts of these units, a hypothesis promisingly tested addressing the evolution of the rib-associated lumbar (RAL) morphotype that characterizes emblematic animals such as snakes and elephants. Previous investigation in these lineages identified a polymorphism in the Homology region 1 [H1] enhancer of the Myogenic factor-5 [Myf5], which interacts with HOX10 proteins to modulate rib development. Here we address the evolution of TF-RE units focusing on independent origins of RAL morphotypes. We compiled an extensive database for H1-Myf5 and HOX10 sequences with two goals: (i) evaluate if the enhancer polymorphism is present in amphibians exhibiting the RAL morphotype and (ii) test a hypothesis of enhanced evolutionary flexibility mediated by TF-RE units, according to which independent origins of the RAL morphotype might involve changes in either component of the interaction unit. We identified the H1-Myf5 polymorphism in lineages that diverged around 340 Ma, including Lissamphibia. Independent origins of the RAL morphotype in Tetrapoda involved sequence variation in either component of the TF-RE unit, confirming that different changes may similarly affect the phenotypic outcome of a given developmental pathway.

Introduction: Heterophoria is the misalignment of the ocular axes, which is compensated during binocular fixation using the fusion mechanism. It has a high prevalence in the population. Objective: To demonstrate the importance of a personalized optical correction in patients with heterophorias. Cases report: Four cases who attended an ophthalmology consultation for refraction due to asthenopic symptoms are presented. After a complete evaluation of every one of the cases, the presence of heterophoria was found in all of them. The existence of exophoria, mainly associated with insufficient convergence, was determined in three of them; and convergence excess esophoria was identified in one case. Personalized optical correction was indicated in all cases, taking into account the results of the examinations; also, the discomfort in the patients was eliminated. Conclusions: Heterophorias are a frequent cause of asthenopic symptoms. It is necessary to carry out an adequate study before indicating a refractive correction, considering the identification and quantification of phoria, evaluation of fusional vergences, the study of the near point of convergence, and the accommodation-convergence relationship(AU)

RESUMO

Latin America experiences an increasing urban primacy index and a rapid expansion of the financial system, putting direct pressure on the demand for resources to satisfy the consumption of large cities. We investigate the convergence of per capita biocapacity in 16 Latin America countries and evaluate the factors that influence its evolution over time. Specifically, we analyze the impact of the urban primacy index, economic progress, and the financial globalization index on the convergence of per capita biocapacity. We use the methodological framework developed by Phillips and Sul Econometrica 75:1771-1855, (2007) to analyze the convergence and the formation of convergence clubs of biocapacity during 1970-2017. The findings indicate that the countries of the region do not share a common trend of biocapacity, although they are grouped into five converging clubs. Biocapacity transition analysis reveals that countries have heterogeneous transition pathways between them. Using marginal effects, we find that the urban primacy index and economic progress reduce the biocapacity. The effect of the financial globalization index on biocapacity is not conclusive. The quantile regressions reveal that quantiles' impact of the urban primacy index and financial globalization on per capita biocapacity is heterogeneous. However, the effect of economic progress on biocapacity that predominates among quantiles is positive. The adoption of common policies among the countries that form the converging clubs could improve the effectiveness of pro-environmental policies and promote the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals related to environmental quality.

Objective: To determine the motor results after corneal refractive surgery with excimer laser in myopic patients with or without associated astigmatism. Method: A pre-experimental study of the before and after type was carried out, in 81 patients (162 eyes) treated with LASEK-MMC (65 patients) or PRK-MMC (16 patients) followed up for three months. A complete ophthalmological examination was performed and the variables were evaluated near point of convergence, amplitude of convergence, divergence, and pre-surgery and postsurgery ocular alignment. Results: A significant increase in the near point of convergence was observed with surgery (LASEK-MMC: p = 0.000 and PRK-MMC: p = 0.021). The amplitude of convergence near and far, as well as the amplitude of divergence tended to decrease, but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). The percentage of patients with near exodeviations increased after LASEK-MMC surgery (26.2 percent → 60.0 percent, p = 0.000) and PRK-MMC (18.8 percent → 81.3 percent, p = 0.000), and small heterophoria predominated in both cases (LASEK-MMC: 52.3 percent and PRK-MMC: 75.0 percent). Conclusions: The laser photoablative surgery increased postoperative exodeviations, but they were mainly small heterophoria, although a small number of patients developed new exodeviations(AU)

Objective: To determine the eye movement outcomes after excimer laser corneal refractive surgery in myopic patients with or without associated astigmatism. Methods: A preexperimental, before-and-after study was carried out with 81 patients (162 eyes) treated with laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) (65 patients) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) (16), with intraoperative application of mitomycin-C (MMC) in both cases, and followed for three months. A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed and the following variables were evaluated before and after the surgery: near convergence point, convergence amplitude, divergence and ocular alignment. Results: With surgery, a significant increase in the near point of convergence was observed (LASEK-MMC: P=0.000; PRK-MMC: P=0.021). The near and far convergence amplitude tended to decrease, but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). The percentage of patients with near exodeviations increased after LASEK-MMC (26.2 percent → 60.0 percent, P=0.000) and PRK-MMC (18.8 percent → 81.3 percent, P=0.000), while small heterophorias predominated in both cases (LASEK-MMC: 52.3 percent and PRK-MMC: 75.0 percent). Conclusions: With laser photoablative surgery, exodeviations increased after surgery, but these were primarily small heterophorias, although a small number of patients developed new exodeviations(AU)

Fusional vergence is defined as the vergence stimulated by retinal disparity that generates a vergence movement to maintain simple binocular vision, they are disjunctive binocular movements in which both eyes are directed in the same direction to fix an object and at the same time they move in opposite way. Fusion amplitude plays an important role in maintaining single binocular vision. Values outside the norm are significant in the diagnosis of possible non-strabismic binocular dysfunctions. This article aims to show the different criteria related to the evaluation of the amplitude of fusional reserves, which is the most used test and the ranges considered within normal limits, for which a search was carried out in different publications and texts of the specialty(AU)
