Chagas disease, a silent but widespread disease that mainly affects a socioeconomically vulnerable population, lacks innovative safe drug therapy. The available drugs, benznidazole and nifurtimox, are more than fifty years old, have limited efficacy, and carry harmful side effects, highlighting the need for new therapeutics. This study presents two new series of pyrazole-thiadiazole compounds evaluated for trypanocidal activity using cellular models predictive of efficacy. Derivatives 1c (2,4-diCl) and 2k (4-NO2) were the most active against intracellular amastigotes. Derivative 1c also showed activity against trypomastigotes, with the detachment of the flagellum from the parasite body being a predominant effect at the ultrastructural level. Analogs have favorable physicochemical parameters and are predicted to be orally available. Drug efficacy was also evaluated in 3D cardiac microtissue, an important target tissue of Trypanosoma cruzi, with derivative 2k showing potent antiparasitic activity and a significant reduction in parasite load. Although 2k potentially reduced parasite load in the washout assay, it did not prevent parasite recrudescence. Drug combination analysis revealed an additive profile, which may lead to favorable clinical outcomes. Our data demonstrate the antiparasitic activity of pyrazole-thiadiazole derivatives and support the development of these compounds using new optimization strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate an experimental methacrylate-based photo-polymerizable resin for 3D printing with ytterbium trifluoride as filler and to evaluate the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties. METHODS: Resin matrix was formulated with 60 wt% UDMA, 40 wt% TEGDMA, 1 wt% TPO, and 0.01 wt% BHT. Ytterbium Trifluoride was added in concentrations of 1 (G1 %), 2 (G2 %), 3 (G3 %), 4 (G4 %), and 5 (G5 %) wt%. One group remained without filler addition as control (GC). The samples were designed in 3D builder software and printed using a UV-DLP 3D printer. The samples were ultrasonicated with isopropanol and UV cured for 60 min. The resins were tested for degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength, Knoop microhardness, softening in solvent, radiopacity, colorimetric analysis, and cytotoxicity (MTT and SRB). RESULTS: Post-polymerization increased the degree of conversion of all groups (p < 0.05). G2 % showed the highest DC after post-polymerization. G2 % showed no differences in flexural strength from the G1 % and GC (p > 0.05). All groups showed a hardness reduction after solvent immersion. No statistical difference was found in radiopacity, softening in solvent (ΔKHN%), colorimetric spectrophotometry, and cytotoxicity (MTT) (p > 0.05). G1 % showed reduced cell viability for SRB assay (p < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE: It was possible to produce an experimental photo-polymerizable 3D printable resin with the addition of 2 % ytterbium trifluoride as filler without compromising the mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, comparable to the current provisional materials.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between serum levels and food intake of Vitamin D (VD) among healthy women in mid-pregnancy and preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: In a Brazilian multicentre cohort of healthy nulliparous pregnant women from five maternity centres we developed a nested case-control analysis comparing cases with and without preeclampsia. Women were enrolled and followed during prenatal care, including only singleton pregnancies, without any fetal malformations or previous chronic maternal disease. We matched 87 cases of preeclampsia to eligible controls randomly selected in a 1:1 ratio, by age and region. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Blood samples from these were collected, and a 24-hour recall of food intake was obtained in mid-pregnancy, between 19 and 21 weeks. VD serum levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D) were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and were categorized as deficient, insufficient, and sufficient. The dietary intake of VD was estimated with the 24-hour diet recall applied at the same time and from supplementation. Maternal characteristics and VD levels were compared between cases and controls with OR and respective 95 %CI. Multivariate analysis using the Path method was used to assess relationships among VD, PE, BMI, skin colour/ethnicity, and diet. RESULTS: The maternal characteristics of both groups were similar, except for the higher occurrence of obesity among women with preeclampsia (OR 3.47, 95 %CI 1.48-8.65). Dietary intake of VD was similar in both groups, and most of the women in both groups consumed insufficient VD (82.2 vs 79.3 % in the groups with and without PE). CONCLUSIONS: Levels and dietary intake of VD were not associated with PE in this Brazilian sample of healthy pregnant women; however, BMI and skin colour/ethnicity were associated with PE.

Current treatments for type 2 diabetes (T2D) mainly rely on exercise, dietary control, and anti-diabetic drugs to enhance insulin secretion and improve insulin sensitivity. However, there is a need for more therapeutic options, as approved drugs targeting different pharmacological objectives are still unavailable. One potential target that has attracted attention is the protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), which negatively regulates the insulin signaling pathway. In this work, a comprehensive computational screening was carried out using cheminformatics and molecular docking on PTP1B, employing a rigorous repurposing approach. The screening involved approved drugs and compounds under research as anti-diabetics that bind to targets such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) and α-glucosidase. Several computational hits were then meticulously tested in vitro against PTP1B, with 13-cis-retinoic acid (3a) showing an IC50 of 0.044 mM and competitive inhibition. Molecular dynamics studies further confirmed that 3a can bind to the catalytic binding site of PTP1B. Finally, 3a is the first time it has been reported as an inhibitor of PTP1B, making it a potentially valuable candidate for further studies in D2T treatment.

Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death among women, primarily due to its potential for metastasis. As BC progresses, the extracellular matrix (ECM) produces more type-I collagen, resulting in increased stiffness. This alteration influences cellular behaviors such as migration, invasion, and metastasis. Specifically, cancer cells undergo changes in gene expression that initially promote an epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and subsequently, a transition from a mesenchymal to an amoeboid (MAT) migration mode. In this way, cancer cells can migrate more easily through the stiffer microenvironment. Despite their importance, understanding MATs remains challenging due to the difficulty of replicating in vitro the conditions for cell migration that are observed in vivo. Methods: To address this challenge, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) growth system that replicates the different matrix properties observed during the progression of a breast tumor. We used this model to study the migration and invasion of the Triple-Negative BC (TNBC) cell line MDA-MB-231, which is particularly subject to metastasis. Results: Our results indicate that denser collagen matrices present a reduction in porosity, collagen fiber size, and collagen fiber orientation, which are associated with the transition of cells to a rounder morphology with bleb-like protrusions. We quantified how this transition is associated with a more persistent migration, an enhanced invasion capacity, and a reduced secretion of matrix metalloproteinases. Discussion: Our findings suggest that the proposed 3D growth conditions (especially those with high collagen concentrations) mimic key features of MATs, providing a new platform to study the physiology of migratory transitions and their role in BC progression.

After the paradigm shift in the treatment of excavated deformities caused by the introduction of the Nuss technique in 1998, several innovative technical modifications and new treatment modalities have radically changed the surgical approach of pectus excavatum in the last couple of years. These new trends attain different topics. On one hand, the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing and implant customization surge as a possibility for a wider audience as 3D printers become available with lower costs. They provide the surgeon with new elements that enable precise planning, simulation, and customized prostheses amidst a tendency to abandon standardization and incorporate personalized medicine. Another topic comprises mandatory sternal elevation, in the continuous search for safety first always. Complete thoracic remodeling as a goal of repair instead of addressing only focal depressions, leaving the upper chest or focal protrusions unresolved. Finally, although the current surgical approach has evolved significantly, many groups still use lateral stabilizers or direct implant fixation with sutures or wires to the ribs. These systems continue to prove unreliable in preventing implant displacement. Fortunately, the bridge technique, described in this review, has come to address this sometimes fatal issue with encouraging results. We provide an updated overview of the latest developments regarding these concepts, related to the current state-of-the-art of the treatment of pectus excavatum.

Following consumer trends and market needs, the food industry has expanded the use of unconventional sources to obtain proteins. In parallel, 3D and 4D food printing have emerged with the potential to enhance food processing. While 3D and 4D printing technologies show promising prospects for improving the performance and applicability of unconventional sourced proteins (USP) in food, this combination remains relatively unexplored. This review aims to provide an overview of the application of USP in 3D and 4D printing, focusing on their primary sources, composition, rheological, and technical-functional properties. The drawbacks, challenges, potentialities, and prospects of these technologies in food processing are also examined. This review underscores the current necessity for greater regulation of food products processed by 3D and 4D printing. The data presented here indicate that 3D and 4D printing represent viable, sustainable, and innovative alternatives for the food industry, emphasizing the potential for further exploration of 4D printing in food processing. Additional studies are warranted to explore their application with unconventional proteins.

Silicon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention due to their unique properties and potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and other advanced technologies. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation of a novel silicon allotrope, Popsilicene (Pop-Si), derived from the structure of Popgraphene. Using density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we explore the thermal stability, mechanical and electronic properties, and optical characteristics of Pop-Si. Our results demonstrate that Pop-Si exhibits good thermal stability at 1000 K. Electronic structure calculations reveal that Pop-Si is metallic, with a high density of states at the Fermi level. Furthermore, our analysis of the optical properties indicates that Pop-Si has pronounced UV-Vis optical activity, making it a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices. Mechanical property assessments show that Pop-Si has Young's modulus ranging from 10 to 92 GPa and a Poisson's ratio of 0.95. These results combined suggest its potential for practical applications.

OBJECTIVES: To study the complications and effectiveness of the treatment of chronic arrhythmias with cardiac Ganglion Plexus (GP) ablation, and to explore the value of the treatment of chronic arrhythmias with GP ablation. METHODS: This study was a one-arm interventional study of patients from the first hospital of Xinjiang Medical University and the People's Hospital of Xuancheng City admitted (09/2018-08/2021) because of bradyarrhythmia. The left atrium was modeled using the Carto3 mapping system. The ablation endpoint was the absence of a vagal response under anatomically localized and high-frequency stimulation guidance. Postoperative routine follow-up was conducted. Holter data at 3-, 6-, and 12-months were recorded. RESULTS: Fifty patients (25 male, mean age 33.16 ± 7.89 years) were induced vagal response by either LSGP, LIGP, RAGP, or RIGP. The heart rate was stable at 76 bpm, SNRT 1.092s. DC, DR, HR, SDNN, RMSSD values were lower than that before ablation. AC, SSR, TH values were higher than those before ablation, mean heart rate and the slowest heart rate were significantly increased. There were significant differences in follow-up data between the preoperative and postoperative periods (all p < 0.05). All the patients were successfully ablated, and their blood pressure decreased significantly. No complications such as vascular damage, vascular embolism and pericardial effusion occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Left Atrial GP ablation has good long-term clinical results and can be used as a treatment option for patients with bradyarrhythmia.

An innovative integrated paper-based microdevice was developed for protein separation by isoelectric focusing (IEF), allowing for robust design thanks to a 3D-printed holder integrating separation channel, reservoirs, and electrodes. To reach robustness and precision, the optimization focused on the holder geometry, the paper nature, the reservoir design, the IEF medium, and various focusing parameters. A well-established and stable pH gradient was obtained on a glass-fiber paper substrate with simple sponge reservoirs, and the integration of the electrodes in the holder led to a straightforward system. The separation medium composed of water/glycerol (85/15, v/v) allowed for reducing medium evaporation while being an efficient medium for most hydrophobic and hydrophilic proteins, compatible with mass spectrometry detection for further proteomics developments. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the use of glycerol solutions as a separation medium in a paper-based microdevice. Analytical performances regarding pH gradient generation, pI determination, separation efficiency, and resolution were estimated while varying the IEF experimental parameters. The overall process led to an efficient separation within 25 min. Then, this methodology was applied to a sample composed of saliva doped with proteins. A minimal matrix effect was evidenced, underscoring the practical viability of our platform. This low-cost, versatile and robust paper-based IEF microdevice opens the way to various applications, ranging from sample pre-treatment to integration in an overall proteomic-on-a-chip device.

INTRODUCTION: The use of three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomic models is steadily increasing in research and as a tool for clinical decision-making. The mechanical properties of polymers and metamaterials were investigated to evaluate their application in mimicking the biomechanics of the aortic vessel wall. METHODOLOGY: Uniaxial tensile tests were performed to determine the elastic modulus, mechanical stress, and strain of 3D printed samples. We used a combination of materials, designed to mimic biological tissues' properties, the rigid VeroTM family, and the flexible Agilus30™. Metamaterials were designed by tessellating unit cells that were used as lattice-reinforcement to tune their mechanical properties. The lattice-reinforcements were based on two groups of patterns, mainly responding to the movement between links/threads (chain and knitted) or to deformation (origami and diamond crystal). The mechanical properties of the printed materials were compared with the characteristics of healthy and aneurysmal aortas. RESULTS: Uniaxial tensile tests showed that the use of a lattice-reinforcement increased rigidity and may increase the maximum stress generated. The pattern and material of the lattice-reinforcement may increase or reduce the strain at maximum stress, which is also affected by the base material used. Printed samples showed max stress ranging from 0.39 ± 0.01 MPa to 0.88 ± 0.02 MPa, and strain at max stress ranging from 70.44 ± 0.86% to 158.21 ± 8.99%. An example of an application was created by inserting a metamaterial designed as a lattice-reinforcement on a model of the aorta to simulate an abdominal aortic aneurysm. CONCLUSION: The maximum stresses obtained with the printed models were similar to those of aortic tissue reported in the literature, despite the fact that the models did not perfectly reproduce the biological tissue behavior.

Introduction: Globally, up to 76.6% of the population may be affected by vitamin D (VD) deficiency, which has been linked to increased morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. This underscores the importance of further research into VD supplementation, particularly for health care workers, who are at higher risk due to indoor work environments and dietary challenges associated with shift schedules. Objective: This study aimed to identify factors associated with VD deficiency in Mexican health care workers exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from June 2020 to January 2021 among frontline health care workers treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Blood samples were collected to measure 25-hydroxy VD levels via radioimmunoassay. We also assessed previous COVID-19 infection and comorbidities that could influence VD levels. Results: The study included 468 health care workers. The median serum VD concentration was 16.6 ng/mL. VD deficiency was found in 69.4% (n = 325) of participants, while only 5.1% (n = 24) had normal levels. Those with type 2 diabetes (13.3 ng/mL vs. 17.1 ng/mL) or obesity (15.7 ng/mL vs. 17.1 ng/mL) had significantly lower VD levels than their counterparts (p < 0.001 and p = 0.049, respectively). No significant differences were found among participants with high blood pressure. Multivariate analysis revealed that type 2 diabetes was independently associated with VD deficiency. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of VD deficiency among health care workers, which is potentially linked to both personal health factors and occupational conditions.

This study presents a mathematical model for optimal vaccination strategies in interconnected metropolitan areas, considering commuting patterns. It is a compartmental model with a vaccination rate for each city, acting as a control function. The commuting patterns are incorporated through a weighted adjacency matrix and a parameter that selects day and night periods. The optimal control problem is formulated to minimize a functional cost that balances the number of hospitalizations and vaccines, including restrictions of a weekly availability cap and an application capacity of vaccines per unit of time. The key findings of this work are bounds for the basic reproduction number, particularly in the case of a metropolitan area, and the study of the optimal control problem. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations provide insights into disease dynamics and the effectiveness of control measures. The research highlights the importance of prioritizing vaccination in the capital to better control the disease spread, as we depicted in our numerical simulations. This model serves as a tool to improve resource allocation in epidemic control across metropolitan regions.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the 3D accuracy of attachment positioning and the adaptation of aligners to attachments using in-house templates made with either polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and either pressure or vacuum thermoforming machines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 140 test specimens were resin-printed. Templates for the attachment bonding were made with 1-mm EVA or 0.5-mm PETG laminates. Orthodontic aligners were manufactured with 0.75-mm PETG. The thermoplastification process was carried out using either vacuum or pressure machines. The positional differences between the virtual and bonded attachments were assessed in the X, Y and Z coordinates. The marginal adaptation between the aligners and the attachments was measured. RESULTS: Minor inaccuracies in the positioning of the attachments were observed in all combinations of thermoforming machines and plastic laminates used to fabricate the templates, mainly in the superior-inferior (Z) dimension. PETG performed better than EVA in the anterior region (p < .05). No association was found between thermoplastification machines and the accuracy of the positioning of the attachments (p > .05). While small misadaptations between the aligners and the attachments were observed, the EVA templates performed better than the PETG templates. CONCLUSIONS: The inaccuracy of the attachment positioning and the misadaptation of the aligners to the attachments were slight. The vacuum and pressure thermoplastification machines showed no difference in attachment positioning accuracy. The PETG template was better than the EVA template in the anterior region, but the EVA attachments presented a better adaptation to the aligners than the PETG attachments.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D may prevent the development of hypertension through down-regulation of renin-angiotensin system. However, epidemiologic studies assessing the interrelation of vitamin D-related biomarkers with hypertension are sparse. METHODS: We examined the prospective associations between vitamin D-related biomarkers and risk of hypertension in a nested case-control study. In each of the Women's Health Study (WHS) and Physicians' Health Study (PHS) II, 500 incident hypertension cases and 500 age and race matched controls were randomly selected. Baseline plasma 25(OH)-vitamin D [25(OH)D], parathyroid hormone (PTH), and total renin concentrations were measured. RESULTS: Among controls, 25(OH)D and PTH were inversely correlated, but neither was correlated with total renin. In the crude model, there was a trend of association between increasing quintiles of 25(OH)D and lower risk of hypertension in women, with relative risks and 95% CIs of 1.00, 1.24 (0.84-1.83), 0.82 (0.53-1.25), 0.75 (0.48-1.16), and 0.81 (0.52-1.27) (p, trend: 0.07). Adjustment for body mass index and other hypertension risk factors eliminated this association (RR of 5th quintile: 1.03). No associations were found in men. Baseline PTH and ratio of 25(OH)D to PTH were not associated with risk of hypertension in women or men. When men and women were included in the same model, vitamin D insufficiency (defined as 25(OH)D <20 ng/mL) also was not associated with increased risk of hypertension. No interactions were found across subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found no association of baseline plasma 25(OH)D or PTH with risk of hypertension or total renin concentration in middle-aged and older men and women.

Objective: Tibial plateau fractures are common intra-articular fractures that pose classification and treatment challenges for orthopedic surgeons. Objective: This study examines the value of 3D printing for classifying and planning surgery for complex tibial plateau fractures. Methods: We reviewed 54 complex tibial plateau fractures treated at our hospital from January 2017 to January 2019. Patients underwent preoperative spiral CT scans, with DICOM data processed using Mimics software. 3D printing technology created accurate 1:1 scale models of the fractures. These models helped subdivide the fractures into seven types based on the tibial plateau's geometric planes. Surgical approaches and simulated operations, including fracture reduction and plate placement, were planned using these models. Results: The 3D models accurately depicted the direction and extent of fracture displacement and plateau collapse. They facilitated the preoperative planning, allowing for precise reconstruction strategies and matching intraoperative details with the pre-printed models. Post-surgery, the anatomical structure of the tibial plateau was significantly improved in all 54 cases. Conclusion: 3D printing effectively aids in the classification and preoperative planning of complex tibial plateau fractures, enhancing surgical outcomes and anatomical restoration. Objetivo: As fraturas do planalto tibial são fraturas intra-articulares comuns de classificação e tratamento desafiadores aos cirurgiões ortopédicos. Objetivo: Este estudo investiga o uso de impressão 3D para classificar e planejar a cirurgia de fraturas complexas do planalto tibial. Métodos: 54 fraturas complexas do planalto tibial tratadas em nosso hospital de janeiro de 2017 a janeiro de 2019 foram revisadas. Os pacientes foram submetidos a tomografias computadorizadas em espiral pré-operatórias, com dados DICOM processados usando o software Mimics. A tecnologia de impressão 3D gerou modelos precisos em escala 1:1 das fraturas. Estes modelos ajudaram a subdividir as fraturas em sete tipos com base nos planos geométricos do planalto tibial. As abordagens cirúrgicas e as operações simuladas, incluindo a redução da fratura e a colocação de placa, foram planejadas utilizando estes modelos. Resultados: Os modelos 3D representaram com precisão a direção e a extensão da deslocação da fratura e do colapso do planalto. Os modelos facilitaram o planejamento pré-operatório, viabilizando estratégias de reconstrução precisas e a correspondência dos detalhes intraoperatórios com os modelos pré-impressos. Após a cirurgia, a estrutura anatômica do planalto tibial melhorou significativamente em todos os 54 casos. Conclusão: A impressão 3D ajuda na classificação e no planejamento pré-operatório de fraturas complexas do planalto tibial, melhorando os resultados cirúrgicos e a restauração anatômica. Vitamin D is essential for bone metabolism and has gained popularity since the general population is now more aware of its benefits. Unfortunately, the availability of unregulated vitamin D formulations without prescription increases the risk of inadvertently ingesting excessive doses of vitamin D. Reports of pediatric cases of vitamin D toxicity are scarce in the world literature. We present the case of a 4-years 9-months old boy from a rural town with vitamin D intoxication secondary to ingestion of seven oral vials containing each of them 600,000 Units of cholecalciferol for a period of 8 months. It is important to educate general population about the risks of ingesting vitamin D without medical prescription. In our patient, the most effective treatment strategy was the use of pamidronate.

Breast cancer is the most diagnosed type of cancer worldwide and the second cause of death in women. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive, and due to the lack of specific targets, it is considered the most challenging subtype to treat and the subtype with the worst prognosis. The present study aims to determine the antitumor effect of beta-D-glucose-reduced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-G) in a murine model of TNBC, as well as to study its effect on the tumor microenvironment. In an airbag model with 4T1 tumor cell implantation, the administration of AgNPs-G or doxorubicin showed antitumoral activity. Using immunohistochemistry it was demonstrated that treatment with AgNPs-G decreased the expression of PCNA, IDO, and GAL-3 and increased the expression of Caspase-3. In the tumor microenvironment, the treatment increased the percentage of memory T cells and innate effector cells and decreased CD4+ cells and regulatory T cells. There was also an increase in the levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-6, while TNF-α was increased in serum. In conclusion, we suggest that AgNPs-G treatment has an antitumor effect that is demonstrated by its ability to remodel the tumor microenvironment in mice with TNBC.

PURPOSE: To introduce a computational tool for peri-interventional intracranial aneurysm treatment guidance that maps preoperative planning information from simulation onto real-time X-Ray imaging. METHODS: Preoperatively, multiple flow diverter (FD) devices are simulated based on the 3D mesh of the vessel to treat, to choose the optimal size and location. In the peri-operative stage, this 3D information is aligned and mapped to the continuous 2D-X-Ray scan feed from the operating room. The current flow diverter position in the 3D model is estimated by automatically detecting the distal FD marker locations and mapping them to the treated vessel. This allows to visually assess the possible outcome of releasing the device at the current position, and compare it with the one chosen pre-operatively. RESULTS: The full pipeline was validated using retrospectively collected biplane images from four different patients (5 3D-DSA datasets in total). The distal FD marker detector obtained an average F1-score of 0.67 ( ± 0.224 ) in 412 2D-X-Ray scans. After aligning 3D-DSA + 2D-X-Ray datasets, the average difference between simulated and deployed positions was 0.832 mm ( ± 0.521 mm). Finally, we qualitatively show that the proposed approach is able to display the current location of the FD compared to their pre-operatively planned position. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method allows to support the FD deployment procedure by merging and presenting preoperative simulation information to the interventionists, aiding them to make more accurate and less risky decisions.

Most patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) do not exhibit violent behaviors and are more likely to be victims rather than perpetrators of violent acts. However, a subgroup of forensic detainees with SCZ exhibit tendencies to engage in criminal violations. Although numerous models have been proposed, ranging from substance use, serotonin transporter gene, and cognitive dysfunction, the molecular underpinnings of violence in SCZ patients remains elusive. Lithium and clozapine have established anti-aggression properties and recent studies have linked low cholesterol levels and ultraviolet (UV) radiation with human aggression, while vitamin D3 reduces violent behaviors. A recent study found that vitamin D3, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and zinc lower aggression in forensic population. In this review article, we take a closer look at aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and the dysfunctional lipidome in neuronal membranes, with emphasis on cholesterol and vitamin D3 depletion, as sources of aggressive behavior. We also discuss modalities to increase the fluidity of neuronal double layer via membrane lipid replacement (MLR) and natural or synthetic compounds.
