Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pomegranate solution (Punica granatum) on eroded dentin through antioxidant action, shear bond strength (SBS) and interface morphology. Materials and Methods: The 10% pomegranate peel extract was prepared by the lyophilization method. Punicalagin polyphenol was confirmed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by capturing the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. For the SBS, 48 dentin fragments were divided into sound or eroded, and subdivided according to the pretreatment (n = 12): water or P. granatum. The surfaces were restored with self-etch adhesive and a bulk-fill resin (Ecosite; DMG). The SBS was done immediately (24 hours) and after thermal cycling + water storage (12 months). For scanning electron microscopy, 48 dentin fragments (24 sound and 24 eroded) received the same treatments as for SBS (n = 6), and they were analyzed after 24 hours and 12 months. Results: The P. granatum had antioxidant action similar (p = 0.246) to the phenolic standard antioxidants. After 24 hours, eroded dentin had lower SBS than sound dentin (p < 0.001), regardless of the pretreatment. After 12 months, P. granatum maintained the SBS of sound dentin (13.46 ± 3.42 MPa) and eroded dentin (10.96 ± 1.90 MPa) statistically similar. The lowest values were found on eroded dentin treated with water (5.75 ± 1.65 MPa) (p < 0.001). P. granatum on eroded dentin caused peritubular demineralization and hybrid layer with resin tags. Conclusions: The pomegranate extract had antioxidant action and preserved the adhesive interface of the eroded dentin.
RESUMO
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of Chitosan 0.2% in various final cleaning methods on the bond strength of fiberglass post (FP) to intrarradicular dentin. Ninety bovine incisors were sectioned to obtain root remnants measuring 18 mm in length. The roots were divided: G1: EDTA 17%; G2: EDTA 17% + PUI; G3: EDTA 17% + EA; G4: EDTA 17% + XPF; G5: Chitosan 2%; G6: Chitosan 2% + PUI; G7: Chitosan 2% + EA; G8: Chitosan 2% +XPF. After carrying out the cleaning methods, the posts were installed, and the root was cleaved to generate two disks from each root third. Bond strength values (MPa) obtained from the micro push-out test data were assessed by using Kruskal-Wallis and Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner tests for multiple comparisons (α = 5%). Differences were observed in the cervical third between G1 and G8 (p = 0.038), G4 and G8 (p = 0.003), G6 and G8 (p = 0.049), and Control and G8 (p = 0.019). The final cleaning method influenced the adhesion strength of cemented FP to intrarradicular dentin. Chitosan 0.2% + XPF positively influenced adhesion strength, with the highest values in the cervical third.
RESUMO
This study evaluated the effects of Erbium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (Er:YAG) laser settings and dentin bonding agents on ultramorphological characteristics of resin-laser-irradiated dentin interfaces and dentin bond strength (BS) of these adhesive systems. Additionally, dentin depth affected by Er:YAG laser irradiations was measured. The experiments were performed on occlusal dentin surfaces of third molars that were flattened with 600-grit SiC sandpaper. Treated-dentin with laser settings (250 mJ/4 Hz and 160 mJ/10 Hz) were the experimental groups, while SiC abraded dentin was the control. These three dentin treatments and three adhesives (two self-etchings and one etch-&-rinse adhesive) formed nine groups for the ultramorphology of laser-ablated dentin-adhesives interfacial analysis, using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). For BS (n = 8), the same nine groups were tested with addition of the two evaluation times (24 h after sample preparation or 1 year). The depths of Er:YAG laser effects into the dentin were measured using a TEM (n = 10). Ablated-dentin depth and BS data were analyzed by one- and three-way ANOVA, respectively, and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Hybrid layer formation was only observed for controls, while for laser-treated dentin, adhesives were bonded to dentin with resin tags formation. Laser settings reduced the BS for all adhesives at 24 h, while at 1 year, etch-&-rinse adhesive presented the highest BS, regardless treatment (control or laser settings). Dentin depth affected by laser settings was similar. The laser irradiation altered the bonding mechanism of the adhesives to dentin and reduced the BS for self-etching adhesives. Etch-&-rinse adhesive yielded the highest BS at 1 year. Laser settings similarly affected the dentin in depth. HIGHLIGHTS: Er:YAG laser irradiation settings produced similar effects on depth and bond strength to dentin. The etch-&-rinse adhesive yielded the highest dentin bond strength regardless of the type of dentin treatment at 1 year.

A cimentação de pinos de fibra de vidro à dentina intrarradicular, principalmente no terço apical, continua sendo um desafio na odontologia. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar a influência do controle de umidade com etanol na resistência de união de pinos de fibra de vidro em diferentes terços de dentina intrarradicular, 24 horas e 6 meses após o processo de cimentação adesiva. Sessenta e quatro incisivos bovinos extraídos foram submetidos ao tratamento endodôntico e divididos em dois grupos, de acordo com o tipo de controle de umidade (técnica convencional e alcoólica). Cada grupo foi dividido em 4 subgrupos (n=8) de acordo com a cimentação: RXU: Single bond Universal + RelyX Ultimate; PNV: primer de dentes Panavia V5 + Panavia V5; U200: RelyX U200; SET: Set PP. A resistência de união do pushout foi medida em diferentes áreas da interface entre o pino e a superfície radicular, 24 horas e 6 meses após o procedimento de união. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste de Bonferroni (α = 0,05). Os menores valores de resistência de união foram encontrados para o grupo SET, com diferença estatisticamente significante entre os demais grupos para os terços cervical e médio. Os maiores valores de resistência de união foram encontrados para o grupo PNV com diferença estatisticamente significante para os demais grupos nos terços médio e apical em 24 horas. Avaliando os diferentes terços, em geral, os maiores valores de resistência de união foram encontrados para o terço cervical. O grupo PNV apresentou maiores valores de resistência de união para os terços cervical e médio, sem diferença estatisticamente significante entre eles. Quanto ao tipo de controle de umidade, pode-se observar que não há diferença estatisticamente significativa para o grupo PNV às 24 horas, U200 e SET aos 6 meses. Na comparação entre os tempos (24 horas e 6 meses), em geral, os valores de resistência de união diminuíram após o armazenamento. Diferenças significativas com menores valores foram observadas após o tempo de seis meses nos valores de envelhecimento para a resistência de união. Por meio de um microscópio óptico e um aparelho de microscopia eletrônica de varredura o padrão de fratura na interface adesiva foi caracterizado.
Cementation of fiberglass posts to intraradical dentin, especially in the apical third, remains a challenge in dentistry. The study was to evaluate the influence of moisture control with ethanol on the bond strength of fiberglass posts in different thirds of intraradicular dentin, 24 hours and 6 months after the adhesive cementation process. Sixty-four extracted bovine incisors were endodontically protected and divided into two groups, according to the type of moisture control (conventional and alcoholic technique). Each group was divided into 4 subgroups (n=8) according to cementation: RXU: Single bond Universal + RelyX Ultimate; PNV: Panavia V5 tooth primer + Panavia V5; U200: RelyX U200; SET: Set PP. The pushout bond strength was measured in different areas of the interface between the post and the root surface, 24 hours and 6 months after the bonding procedure. The data were confirmed by the Bonferroni test (α = 0.05). The lowest bond strength values were found for the SET group, with a statistically significant difference between the other groups for the cervical and middle thirds. The highest bond strength values were found for the PNV group, with a statistically significant difference for the other groups in the middle and apical thirds at 24 hours. Evaluating the different thirds, in general, the highest bond strength values were found for the cervical third. The PNV group showed higher bond strength values for the cervical and middle thirds, with no statistically significant difference between them. As for the type of humidity control, it can be observed that there is no statistically significant difference for the PNV group at 24 hours, U200 and SET at 6 months. In the comparison between times (24 hours and 6 months), in general, the bond strength values decreased after storage. Minor elevation differences with values were observed after the six-month time in the ageing values for bond strength. Using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscopy device, the fracture pattern at the adhesive interface was characterized.

The limited durability of dentin bonding harshly shortens the lifespan of resin composites restorations. The controlled, dynamic movement of materials through non-contacting forces provides exciting opportunities in adhesive dentistry. We, herein, describe comprehensive investigations of a new dental adhesive with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) sensitive to magnetic fields for bonding optimization. This contribution outlines a roadmap of (1) designing and tuning of an adhesive formulation containing SPIONs to enhance penetrability into etched dentin guided by magnetic-field; (2) employing a clinically relevant model of simulated hydrostatic pulpal pressure on the microtensile bond to dentin; and (3) investigating a potential antibacterial effect of the formulated adhesives, and their biocompatibility. SPION-concentration-dependency chemical and mechanical behavior was shown via the degree of conversion, ultimate tensile strength, and micro shear bond strength to dentin. The effects of SPIONs carried on a dental adhesive on the bonding strength to dentin are studied in depth by combining experiments with in vitro simulated model. The results show that under the guided magnetic field, 0.07 wt.% of SPIONs-doped adhesive increased the bond strength that surpasses the reduction caused by hydrostatic pulpal pressure. Using a magnetic guide workflow during the bonding procedures, SPIONs-doped adhesives improved dentin's adhesion without changing adhesives' physicochemical properties. This outcome addresses the key challenge of poor resin infiltration of dentin's conventional total etching during the bonding procedure. The real-time magnetic motion of dental adhesives may open new paths to enhance resin-based restorations' longevity. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In this study, dental adhesives containing superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were developed to enhance penetrability into dentin guided by a magnetic field. The adhesives were screened for physical, chemical, antibacterial properties, and cytotoxicity. For the first time, simulated pulpal pressure was used concurrently with the magnetic field to simulate a clinical setting. This approach showed that it is feasible to overcome pulpal pressure jeopardization on bond strength when SPIONs and a magnetic field are applied. The magnetic-responsive adhesives had great potential to improve bond strength, opening new paths to enhance resin-based restorations' longevity without affecting adhesives' biological properties. The use of magnetic-responsive particles and magnetically assisted motion is a promising strategy to improve the sealing ability of dental adhesives.

BACKGROUND: Immediate dentin sealing implies applying an adhesive system to dentin directly after tooth preparation, before impression. The technique is universal (inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns) and well documented clinically and experimentally. Different types of dentin bonding agents (DBAs) are available on the market. Major differences lie in the thickness of the hybrid layer and overlaying adhesive resin (filled vs. unfilled/lightly filled adhesives). OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work is to provide precise clinical instructions and present new experimental data about the bond strength of five DBAs (Optibond FL, Scotchbond MP, Single Bond Plus, Clearfil SE Bond, and Scotchbond Universal) used conventionally (dentin sealed at the time of restoration delivery) or with immediate dentin sealing, as well as with an additional flowable resin coating. METHODS: Seventy-five human molars were selected, restored/tested according the microtensile bond strength method. Fifteen groups (n=5) were obtained from the combination of the five DBAs and three application modes: delayed dentin sealing, immediate dentin sealing and immediate dentin sealing with flowable resin coating. RESULTS: It appears that immediate dentin sealing was confirmed to significantly improve the bond strength of all tested adhesives. The use of a flowable resin coating reinforcement after immediate dentin sealing increased the microtensile bond strength of all unfilled/lightly filled adhesives (from 233% of increase for ScotchBond MP, up to 560% for Clearfil SE Bond) and maintained the performance of the 3-step golden standard adhesive. Optibond FL used with (52.51 MPa) or without (54.75 MPa) additional flowable resin coating and Clearfil SE Bond (45.64 MPa) used with flowable resin coating provided the best results. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The original immediate dentin sealing (IDS) technique implies the use of a filled DBA. With unfilled/lightly filled adhesives, it is suggested to reinforce IDS with an additional flowable resin coating. This seems especially paramount to the performance of simplified adhesive systems to protect the thin bonding interface from oxygen inhibition and preserve IDS layer during predelivery cleaning of the preparation. The clinical reinforcement of unfilled/lightly filled IDS with flowable resin composite is encouraged for more predictable bonding.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to quantitatively assess the ability of two single-step restorative materials to avoid crown darkening caused by the use of minocycline as an intracanal medicament. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After coronal access and instrumentation, 120 maxillary incisors were divided into four groups (n = 30). Two experimental groups according to the restorative material applied to the inner walls of the access cavity: OB, OptiBond All-In-One + minocycline intracanal paste; U200, RelyX U200 + minocycline intracanal paste. Two control groups without restorative materials: MIN, minocycline intracanal paste and SL, saline intracanal. Color determination was performed using a spectrophotometer at five time points, immediately after materials were applied (baseline), and at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days from the baseline. RESULTS: Decrease in the mean values of L* (luminosity) was observed after insertion of minocycline paste in all groups at all time points. Statistically significant differences were absent between the time points (P > .05). After 28 days, MIN showed significantly more darkening (ΔL*) (- 10.6 ± 7.3) than OB (- 5.4 ± 6.2), U200 (- 5.8 ± 3.9) and SL (- 2.3 ± 1.2) (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Crown darkening can be minimized by the previous application of RelyX U200 or OptiBond All-In-One to the inner walls of the access cavity before a minocycline-containing paste is applied as an intracanal medication. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The American Association of Endodontists Clinical Considerations for Regenerative Procedures in necrotic immature teeth suggests the triple antibiotic paste as an intracanal medication (2018). However, discoloration and crown darkening are common unfavorable outcomes. The clinical protocol suggested in this paper has shown to be able to minimize crown darkening, predictably leading to a better patient-centered clinical success.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the microshear bond strength (µSBS) values of adhesive systems to occlusal and proximal dentin submitted to water storage aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Occlusal and proximal dentin surfaces were obtained from 90 molars, polished with 600-grit SiC and divided according to the type of adhesive system: one total-etch and two self-etch. Starch tubing was used to perform 1 mm2 cylindrical composite resin restorations. The specimens were aged in distilled water during different storage times: 24 hours, 3 months, and 6 months (n = 10). The specimens were submitted to µSBS test. The µSBS values in MPa were subject to three-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in the µSBS values among the storage times (p = 0.72); however, the dentin region (p < 0.01) and the adhesive system (p < 0.01) significantly affected the µSBS. The proximal surface (14.7 ± 3.3 MPa) presented higher µSBS values than the occlusal dentin (10.9 ± 4.1 MPa). The all-in-one adhesive system (GB) achieved the highest µSBS mean (17.0 ± 1.7 MPa). CONCLUSION: Both material and dentin surface factors affected the composite-dentin bond strength; however, the water storage did not influence bonding effectiveness over time.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of blood contamination and different decontamination procedures on marginal adaptation and bond strength of a two-step total-etch adhesive system to dentin. Methods: A total of 135 bovine incisors had the labial surfaces ground to receive cylindrical cavities, and were randomly divided into a control and 8 experimental groups (n=15) according to contamination and decontamination procedures. Freshly collected human blood was applied onto the cavity either before or after light-curing of the adhesive. Four decontamination protocols were tested (drying with paper, water rinsing, phosphoric acid etching, and 10% NaOCl rinsing). The cavities were restored with Adper Single Bond and Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE). The specimens were subjected to thermal cycling before the dye staining test. The cavity floor was removed and the restorations were subjected to a push-out test. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Results: Blood contamination after adhesive light-curing increased marginal gap and yielded lower push-out bond strength values (P<0.01). Conclusion: Water rinsing seems to be a reliable procedure for cavity decontamination. The decontamination procedures tested do not recover marginal sealing and bond strength when blood contamination occurs after light-curing of the adhesive.
Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito da contaminação com sangue e de procedimentos de descontaminação na adaptação marginal e resistência de união de um adesivo convencional de dois passos à dentina. Metodologia: Um total de 135 incisivos bovinos receberam cavidades cilíndricas na superfície vestibular, previamente desgastada. Os dentes foram divididos em grupo controle e 8 grupos experimentais (n=15), com base no momento da contaminação e nos procedimentos de descontaminação. Sangue recém-coletado foi aplicado nas cavidades, antes ou após a fotoativação do adesivo. Quatro procedimentos de descontaminação foram testados: secagem com papel, lavagem com água, condicionamento com ácido fosfórico e lavagem com hipoclorito de sódio a 10%. As cavidades foram restauradas com Adper Single Bond e Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE). Os espécimes foram submetidos à termociclagem antes da marcação com corante. O assoalho das cavidades foi removido e as restaurações foram submetidas ao teste de push-out. Os dados foram analisados por two-way ANOVA e teste de Tukey (α=0,05). Resultados: A contaminação após fotoativação do adesivo gerou fendas marginais maiores e resistência de união menor (P<0,001). Conclusão: A lavagem com água parece ser um método confiável de descontaminação. Os procedimentos testados não recuperam o selamento marginal e a resistência de união quando a contaminação ocorre após fotoativação do adesivo.
