The objective was to investigate associations of serum vitamin D concentration with depressive symptoms and assess the impact that vitamin D concentration has on the occurrence of depressive symptoms in 20-44-year-old pregnant women, postpartum women, non-pp women (non-pregnant/postpartum women), and men, including a separate subgroup analysis of postpartum breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women. The study populations were selected from the 2007-2018 NHANES public data. Subjective interview data and objective laboratory data including depressive symptoms, serum vitamin D concentration, nutrient intake, and demographic information were utilized. Two diet patterns were created using principal component analysis, and a Bayesian multinomial model was fit to predict the depression outcomes for each subpopulation. The estimates for the log vitamin D slope parameter were negative for all cohorts; as vitamin D increased, the probability of having no depression increased, while the probability of depression decreased. The pregnant cohort had the steepest vitamin D slope, followed by postpartum women, then non-pp women and men. Higher vitamin D concentration had more impact on decreasing depression risk in pregnant and postpartum women compared to non-pp women and men. Among postpartum women, higher vitamin D concentration had a greater influence on decreasing breastfeeding women's depression risk than non-breastfeeding women.

As one of the most urgent social and health problems in the world, neurodegenerative diseases have always been of interest to researchers. However, the pathological mechanisms and therapeutic approaches are not achieved. In addition to the established roles of oxidative stress, inflammation and immune response, changes of gut microbiota are also closely related to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Gut microbiota is the central player of the gut-brain axis, the dynamic bidirectional communication pathway between gut microbiota and central nervous system, and emerging insights have confirmed its indispensability in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we discuss the complex relationship between gut microbiota and the central nervous system from the perspective of the gut-brain axis; review the mechanism of microbiota for the modulation different neurodegenerative diseases and discuss how different dietary patterns affect neurodegenerative diseases via gut microbiota; and prospect the employment of gut microbiota in the therapeutic approach to those diseases. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Dyslipidemia can be defined as an abnormality in serum lipid levels that is substantially linked to genetic variations and lifestyle factors, such as diet patterns, and has distinct sex-specific characteristics. We aimed to elucidate the genetic impact of dyslipidemia according to sex and explore the associations between genetic variants and dietary patterns in large-scale population-based cohorts. After performing genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in male, female, and entire cohorts, significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in the three groups, and genetic risk scores (GRSs) were calculated by summing the risk alleles from the selected SNPs. After adjusting for confounding variables, the risk of dyslipidemia was 2.013-fold and 2.535-fold higher in the 3rd quartile GRS group in the male and female cohorts, respectively, than in the 1st quartile GRS group. While instant noodle and soft drink intake were significantly associated with GRS related to hyperlipidemia in male cohorts, coffee consumption was substantially related to GRS related to hyperlipidemia in female cohorts. Considering the influence of genetic factors and dietary patterns, the findings of this study suggest the potential for implementing sex-specific strategic interventions to avoid dyslipidemia.

Background Diabetic nephropathy is a significant concern among individuals with diabetes mellitus, warranting early diagnosis for effective management. This study focuses on the potential of urine albumin estimation as an early diagnostic tool for diabetic nephropathy among patients in central India. Methods A cross-sectional methodology involved 65 individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus at a tertiary care hospital. Demographic factors, including age, gender, family history, duration of diabetes, and dietary patterns, were gathered. Urine albumin levels were categorized as "normal," "microalbuminuria," and "macroalbuminuria." The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics, version 24.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Qualitative variables were presented as percentages and counts. The comparison between groups was conducted using the chi-square exact test. Quantitative variables were described as mean (±standard deviation) and median. Results The study reveals that 78.5% of cases exhibited normal levels below 30 mg, with a mean value of 1.00 ± 0.414. Microalbuminuria, characterized by 30-300 mg levels, was observed in 21.5% of cases. Importantly, no instances of macroalbuminuria, with levels exceeding 300 mg, were detected among the participants. There are associations between demographic variables and diabetic nephropathy findings. Age and gender displayed non-significant associations. Family history of diseases, particularly diabetes, showed significance. Diabetes duration demonstrated a significant link, while diet patterns displayed no significant associations. Conclusion This study contributes insights into the complex interactions of demographic factors in diabetic nephropathy. Early identification and intervention, guided by the associations observed, could enhance patient outcomes and mitigate the burden of diabetic nephropathy-related complications. Further research is warranted to validate and extend these findings to diverse populations.

The executive brain mediates and facilitates a set of cognitive functions, such as decision making, planning, self-regulation, emotional regulation, and attention. Executive dysfunction and related diseases are a rising public health concern. Evidence supports a link between nutritional factors and executive function (EF), but relatively little information exists about the relationship between diet patterns and this higher order cognitive ability. We and others have reported on the relationships between body weight regulation and affective decision making, as measured by performance in the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). However, little is known about the relationships between performance in this decision-making task and whole diet patterns. In this study, we tested whether data-derived diet patterns based on energy-adjusted food intake data from the Block Food Frequency Questionnaire were associated with decision-making performance in the IGT. Secondarily, we examined the influence of these diet patterns on self-reported chronic stress exposure and heart rate variability, which is a marker of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. In prior studies, stress and ANS activity were shown to influence decision-making performance in the IGT. In this study, five distinct diet patterns were identified by cluster and factor analyses. A diet pattern best characterized by elevated sugar-sweetened beverage and added sugar consumption was associated with the lowest decision-making performance (p = 0.0049) and higher stress exposure (p = 0.0097). This same diet pattern was associated (p = 0.0374) with an IGT-affiliated decline in high-frequency HRV and an increase in low-frequency HRV, suggesting diet-induced ANS regulatory shifts in response to performing the EF task. Compared to the sugar-sweetened beverage diet pattern, diet patterns defined by more fruits/vegetables and low red meat (p = 0.0048) or higher omega-3 fatty acids and seafood (p = 0.0029) consumption were associated with lower chronic stress exposure. All outcomes were statistically adjusted for differences in BMI, age, sex, education level, and sensorimotor ability. Our findings provide new information that further supports the potential importance of whole diet patterns on cognitive disease prevention.

Previous studies found a lower prevalence of sarcopenia in older adults engaged in regular aerobic training (AT) or with greater adherence to a Mediterranean (MED) diet. However, the effect of their combination on sarcopenia indices is unknown. The present study tested the association between AT plus a MED diet and the presence of sarcopenia and its defining elements in a sample of Italian older adults enrolled in the Longevity Check-up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project. Analyses were conducted in participants 65+ years, with a body mass index of at least 18.5 kg/m2, engaged in regular AT, and without missing information for the variables of interest. MED diet adherence was evaluated via a modified version of the MEDI-LITE score and categorized as low, moderate, or high. The presence of sarcopenia was established by handgrip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) values below sex-specific cut-points recommended by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2. Data from 491 older adults were analyzed for the present study. The mean age was 72.7 ± 5.7 years, and 185 (37.7%) were women. MED diet adherence was low in 59 (12.0%) participants, moderate in 283 (57.6%), and high in 149 (30.3%). Sarcopenia was identified in 26 participants (5.3%), with no differences across MED diet adherence groups. The results of binary logistic regression showed no significant associations between AT plus adherence to a MED diet and dynapenia, low ASM, or sarcopenia. The findings of the present study indicate that the combination of AT with a MED diet is not associated with a lower probability of sarcopenia or its defining elements in Italian older adults enrolled in Lookup 7+. Further research is warranted to establish whether exercise frequency, volume, intensity, and length of engagement in AT impact the association between MED diet and sarcopenia.

Most human studies investigating the relationship between maternal diet in pregnancy and infant epigenetic state have focused on macro- and micro-nutrient intake, rather than the whole diet. This makes it difficult to translate the evidence into practical prenatal dietary recommendations.To review the evidence on how the prenatal diet relates to the epigenetic state of infants measured in the first year of life via candidate gene or genome-wide approaches.Following the PRISMA guidelines, this systematic literature search was completed in August 2020, and updated in August 2021 and April 2022. Studies investigating dietary supplementation were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed, and the certainty of results was analysed with consideration of study quality and validity.Seven studies were included, encompassing 6852 mother-infant dyads. One study was a randomised controlled trial and the remaining six were observational studies. There was heterogeneity in dietary exposure measures. Three studies used an epigenome-wide association study (EWAS) design and four focused on candidate genes from cord blood samples. All studies showed inconsistent associations between maternal dietary measures and DNA methylation in infants. Effect sizes of maternal diet on DNA methylation ranged from very low (< 1%) to high (> 10%). All studies had limitations and were assessed as having moderate to high risk of bias.The evidence presented here provides very low certainty that dietary patterns in pregnancy relate to epigenetic state in infants. We recommend that future studies maximise sample sizes and optimise and harmonise methods of dietary measurement and pipelines of epigenetic analysis.

BACKGROUND: An individual's dietary pattern contributes in different ways to the prevention and control of recurrent cardiovascular events. However, the quality of the diet is influenced by several factors. The present study aimed to evaluate the quality of the diet of individuals with cardiovascular diseases and determine whether there is an association between sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study carried out with individuals with atherosclerosis (coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease or peripheral arterial disease) recruited from 35 reference centres for the treatment of cardiovascular disease in Brazil. Diet quality was assessed according to the Modified Alternative Healthy Eating Index (mAHEI) and stratified into tertiles. For comparing two groups, the Mann-Whitney or Pearson's chi-squared tests were used. However, for comparing three or more groups, analysis of variance or Kruskal-Wallis was used. For the confounding analysis, a multinomial regression model was used. p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In total, 2360 individuals were evaluated: 58.5% male and 64.2% elderly. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) of the mAHEI was 24.0 (20.0-30.0), ranging from 0.4 to 56.0 points. When comparing the odds ratios (ORs) for the low (first tertile) and medium (second tertile) diet quality groups with the high-quality group (third tertile), it was observed that there was an association between diet quality with a family income of 1.885 (95% confidence intervals [CI] = 1.302-2.729) and 1.566 (95% CI = 1.097-2.235), as well as physical activity of 1.391 (95% CI = 1.107-1.749) and 1.346 (95% CI = 1.086-1.667), respectively. In addition, associations were observed between diet quality and region of residence. CONCLUSIONS: A low-quality diet was associated with family income, sedentarism and geographical area. These data are extremely relevant to assist in coping with cardiovascular disease because they enable an assessment of the distribution of these factors in different regions of the country.

BACKGROUND: Poor diet quality is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, knowledge of metabolites marking adherence to Dietary Guidelines for Americans (2015 version) are limited. OBJECTIVES: The goal was to determine a pattern of metabolites associated with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015, which measures adherence to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. METHODS: The analysis examined 3557 adult men and women from the longitudinal cohort Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), without known cardiovascular disease and with complete dietary data. Fasting serum specimens and diet and demographic questionnaires were assessed at baseline. Untargeted 1H 1-dimensional nuclei magnetic resonance spectroscopy (600 MHz) was used to generate metabolomics and lipidomics. A metabolome-wide association study specified each spectral feature as outcomes, HEI-2015 score as predictor, adjusting for age, sex, race, and study site in linear regression analyses. Subsequently, hierarchical clustering defined the discrete groups of correlated nuclei magnetic resonance features associated with named metabolites, and the linear regression analysis assessed for associations with HEI-2015 total and component scores. RESULTS: The sample included 50% women with an mean age of 63 years, with 40% identifying as White, 23% as Black, 24% as Hispanic, and 13% as Chinese American. The mean HEI-2015 score was 66. The metabolome-wide association study identified 179 spectral features significantly associated with HEI-2015 score. The cluster analysis identified 7 clusters representing 4 metabolites; HEI-2015 score was significantly associated with all. HEI-2015 score was associated with proline betaine [ß = 0.12 (SE = 0.02); P = 4.70 × 10-13] and was inversely related to proline [ß = -0.13 (SE = 0.02); P = 4.45 × 10-14], 1,5 anhydrosorbitol [ß = -0.08 (SE = 0.02); P = 4.37 × 10-7] and unsaturated fatty acyl chains [ß = 0.08 (SE = 0.02); P = 8.98 × 10-7]. Intake of total fruit, whole grains, and seafood and plant proteins was associated with proline betaine. CONCLUSIONS: Diet quality is significantly associated with unsaturated fatty acyl chains, proline betaine, and proline. Further analysis may clarify the link between diet quality, metabolites, and pathogenesis of cardiometabolic disease.

The evolution of dietary guidelines from isolated nutrients to broader dietary pattern recommendations results from growing knowledge of the synergy between nutrients and their food sources as they influence health. Macronutrient and micronutrient needs can be met by consuming various dietary patterns, but guidance is often required to facilitate population-wide adherence to wise food choices to achieve a healthy dietary pattern. This is particularly true in this era with the proliferation of nutrition misinformation and misplaced emphasis. In 2021, the American Heart Association issued a scientific statement outlining key principles of a heart-healthy dietary pattern that could be operationalized in various ways. The objective of this scientific statement is to assess alignment of commonly practiced US dietary patterns with the recently published American Heart Association criteria, to determine clinical and cultural factors that affect long-term adherence, and to propose approaches for adoption of healthy dietary patterns. This scientific statement is intended to serve as a tool for clinicians and consumers to evaluate whether these popular dietary pattern(s) promote cardiometabolic health and suggests factors to consider when adopting any pattern to improve alignment with the 2021 American Heart Association Dietary Guidance. Numerous patterns strongly aligned with 2021 American Heart Association Dietary Guidance (ie, Mediterranean, DASH [Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension], pescetarian, vegetarian) can be adapted to reflect personal and cultural preferences and budgetary constraints. Thus, optimal cardiovascular health would be best supported by developing a food environment that supports adherence to these patterns wherever food is prepared or consumed.

BACKGROUND: The US Dietary Guidelines (USDG) form the basis of nutrition guidelines, but the research informing the 3 USDG dietary patterns (Healthy US-Style [H-US], Mediterranean [Med], and vegetarian [Veg]) has been drawn largely from observational studies among White populations. OBJECTIVES: The Dietary Guidelines 3 Diets study was a 3-arm, 12-wk randomly assigned intervention among African American (AA) adults at risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus that tested the 3 USDG dietary patterns. METHODS: The AAs (ages 18-65 y, BMI 25-49.9 kg/m2, and BMI was measured in kg/m2) with ≥3 type 2 diabetes mellitus risk factors were recruited. Weight, HbA1c, blood pressure, and dietary quality (healthy eating index [HEI]) were collected at baseline and 12 wk. In addition, participants attended weekly online classes that were designed using material from the USDG/MyPlate. Repeated measures, mixed models with maximum likelihood estimation, and robust computation of standard errors were tested. RESULTS: Of the 227 participants screened, 63 were eligible (83% female; age 48.0 ± 10.6 y, BMI 35.9 ± 0.8 kg/m2) and randomly assigned to the Healthy US-Style Eating Pattern (H-US) (n = 21, 81% completion), healthy Mediterranean-style eating pattern (Med) (n = 22, 86% completion), or healthy vegetarian eating pattern (Veg) (n = 20, 70% completion) groups. Within-group, but not between groups, weight loss was significant (-2.4 ± 0.7 kg H-US, -2.6 ± 0.7 kg Med, -2.4 ± 0.8 kg Veg; P = 0.97 between group). There was also no significant difference between groups for changes in HbA1c (0.03 ± 0.05% H-US, -0.10 ± 0.05% Med, 0.07 ± 0.06% Veg; P = 0.10), systolic BP (-5.5 ± 2.7 mmHg H-US, -3.2 ± 2.5 mmHg Med, -2.4 ± 2.9 mmHg Veg; P = 0.70), diastolic blood pressure (-5.2 ± 1.8 mmHg H-US, -2.0 ± 1.7 mmHg Med, -3.4 ± 1.9 mmHg Veg; P = 0.41), or HEI (7.1 ± 3.2 H-US, 15.2 ± 3.1 Med, 4.6 ± 3.4 Veg; P = 0.06). Post hoc analyses showed that the Med group had significantly greater improvements in HEI compared to the Veg group (difference = -10.6 ± 4.6; 95% CI: -19.7, -1.4; P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrates that all 3 USDG dietary patterns lead to significant weight loss among AA adults. However, none of the outcomes were significantly different between groups. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT04981847.

The association between egg consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure (HBP) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or type 2 diabetes (T2D) is still under debate. This study examines the association between egg consumption and these outcomes among 2349 30-64 year-old adults in the prospective Framingham Offspring Study. Diet was assessed using three-day dietary records. Potential confounders retained in the final models included age, sex, body mass index, and other dietary factors. The analysis of covariance and Cox proportional hazard's models were used to assess the relevant continuous (i.e., FG, SBP, DBP) and categorical (i.e., T2D, HBP) outcomes. Consuming ≥5 eggs per week was associated with lower mean FG (p = 0.0004) and SBP (p = 0.0284) after four years of follow-up. Higher egg intakes led to lower risks of developing IFG or T2D (HR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.51-1.03) and high blood pressure (HBP) (HR: 0.68; 0.50-0.93). The beneficial effects of egg consumption were stronger in combination with other healthy dietary patterns. This study found that regular egg consumption as part of a healthy diet had long-term beneficial effects on blood pressure and glucose metabolism and lowered the long-term risks of high blood pressure and diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Launching priority actions demand a comprehensive appraisal of the size effect that risk factors have on the burden of overweight and obesity. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents, with special emphasis on the role of specific risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Secondary analysis of data from the younger cohort of the Young Lives Study in Peru (2002-2017). The outcomes were: overweight and obesity, defined by the World Health Organization standards; whereas the exposures included caesarean birth, physical activity levels, sodas and sugar-sweetened beverages consumption, snacks consumption, and maternal body mass index (BMI). We used multilevel Poisson regression models, considering the repetitive nature of data, to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and population attributable fractions (PAFs). RESULTS: A total of 2052 children, mean age 1 (SD 0.4) year, and 50% girls, were enrolled at baseline. After 14 (SD 0.5) years of follow-up, the incidence of overweight and obesity were 7.9 (95% CI 7.6-8.2) and 2.2 (95% CI 2.0-2.4) per 100 person-year, respectively. Maternal BMI (IRRs 3.51; PAF 31.8%), low physical activity (IRR 1.64; PAF 27.4%), caesarean birth (IRR 1.63; PAF 11.4%), almost daily snack consumption (IRR 1.60; PAF 32.1%), and almost daily consumption of sweetened beverages (IRR 1.47; PAF 26.0%) increased the risk of developing obesity. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence on the risk of overweight and obesity attributable to diet habits, physical activity and the obesogenic niche among children and adolescents in Peru, which may guide the implementation of evidence-based interventions.

Background and Aim: Collecting accurate dietary information in the research setting is challenging due to the inherent biases, duration, and resource-intensive nature of traditional data collection methods. Diet ID™ is a novel, rapid assessment method that uses an image-based algorithm to identify dietary patterns and estimate nutrient intake. The purpose of this analysis was to explore the criterion validity between Diet ID™ and additional measures of dietary intake. Methods: This prospective cohort study (n = 42) collected dietary information using Diet ID™, the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR), plasma carotenoid concentrations, and the Veggie Meter® to estimate carotenoid levels in the skin. Results: There were significant correlations between Diet ID™ and NDSR for diet quality, calories, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and cholesterol. Vitamin A and carotenoid intake were significantly correlated, with the exception of α-carotene and lycopene. Significant correlations were observed for calcium, folate, iron, sodium, potassium, Vitamins B2, B3, B6, C, and E. Skin carotenoid scores and plasma carotenoids were correlated with carotenoid intake from Diet ID™. Conclusions: Diet ID™ may be a useful tool in nutrition research as a less time-intensive and minimally burdensome dietary data collection method for both participants and researchers.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical/behavioral outcomes of a remotely-delivered, culturally-tailored plant-based nutrition and lifestyle intervention designed to improve cardiovascular risk among Black adults in a rural, Black Belt community. METHODS: We implemented a 12-week intervention with weekly educational sessions, cooking lessons, social support, exercise, and food items. OUTCOME(S): Body mass index, waist circumference, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, trimethylamine N-oxide, diet/physical activity. Paired t tests analyzed preintervention and postintervention differences (n = 24). RESULTS: Body mass index and waist circumference were reduced (P < 0.001), and total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased by 10.8% and 13.9%, respectively (P < 0.05). There was a 25.8% reduction in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (P = 0.02). Diet and physical activity were also improved. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility and acceptability of a remotely-delivered intervention focused on improving cardiovascular risk through plant-based nutrition, physical activity/wellness, social support, and cultural adaptability. Larger scale and longer-term studies are needed.

Objective: To assess differences in dietary quality among college men reporting high, moderate, and non-video game usage. Participants: College men aged 18-24. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected between 2012 and 2020. Participants (n = 1259) were categorized according to self-reported video game usage: non-users (NVG), <1 h/day (MVG), and ≥1 h/day (HVG). ANCOVA identified group differences in nutrient intake from 3-day food records. Results: College men reported 30% NVG, 39% MVG, and 31% HVG. Higher saturated fat (30.2 ± 0.4 g and 30.1 ± 0.3 g, vs. 28.5 ± 0.4 g, p < .01, p < .01) and lower fruit/vegetable intake (3.00 ± 0.1 cups and 2.91 ± 0.1 cups, vs. 3.45 ± 0.1 cups, p < .00, p < .00) was observed in HVG and MVG vs. NVG. Higher discretionary calories (750 ± 13 kcals, vs. 686 ± 13 kcals, p < .00) in HVG and sodium (3922 ± 44 mg, vs. 3860 ± 50 mg, p < .02) in MVG were reported vs. NVG. Conclusion: Video game usage was associated with higher saturated fat, sodium, discretionary calories, and lower F/V intake in college men.

OBJECTIVE: To identify peri-conceptional diet patterns among women in Bangalore, and examine their associations with risk of gestational diabetes mellitus. DESIGN: BANGLES, started in June 2016, was a prospective observational study, in which women were recruited at 5-16 weeks' gestation. Peri-conceptional diet was recalled at recruitment, using a validated 224-item food frequency questionnaire. GDM was assessed by a 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks' gestation, applying WHO 2013 criteria. Diet patterns were identified using principal component analysis and diet pattern-GDM associations were examined using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for 'a priori' confounders. SETTING: Antenatal clinics of two hospitals, Bangalore, South India. PARTICIPANTS: 785 pregnant women of varied socio-economic status. RESULTS: GDM prevalence was 22%. Three diet patterns were identified: a) High-diversity, urban (HDU) characterised by diverse, home-cooked and processed foods was associated with older, more affluent, better-educated and urban women; b) Rice-fried snacks-chicken-sweets (RFCS), characterised by low diet-diversity, was associated with younger, less-educated, and lower income, rural and joint families; c) Healthy, traditional vegetarian (HTV), characterised by home-cooked-vegetarian and non-processed foods was associated with less-educated, more affluent, and rural and joint families. The HDU pattern was associated with a lower GDM risk (aOR: 0.80 per SD, 95% CI: 0.64, 0.99, p=0.04) after adjusting for confounders. BMI was strongly related to GDM risk and possibly mediated diet-GDM associations. CONCLUSIONS: The findings support global recommendations to encourage women to attain a healthy pre-pregnancy BMI and increase diet-diversity. Both healthy and unhealthy foods in the patterns indicate low-awareness about healthy foods and a need for public-education.

BACKGROUND: Allostatic load (AL), the concept of cumulative biological risk from chronic stressful exposures, may provide a framework with which to examine the links between diet, physiological stress, and disease. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between diet quality and AL. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2015 through 2018 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Dietary intake was assessed using two 24-hour diet recalls. Diet quality was measured using the Healthy Eating Index 2015. AL was measured by a composite score of nine biochemical markers, with three or more dysregulated values signaling elevated AL. All markers were collected during a physical examination. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study was conducted in a nationally representative population of 5,343 US adults aged 19 years or older who had no prior diagnosis of diabetes (except gestational diabetes), cancer (except skin cancer), or cardiovascular disease; were not pregnant; and had complete dietary intake and AL biomarker data. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome was odds of elevated AL. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Accounting for the complex survey design of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the associations between Healthy Eating Index 2015 score and elevated AL, adjusting for sociodemographic variables. RESULTS: A significant inverse association between AL and diet quality was observed among adults aged 31 years and older but not among those aged 19 to 30 years. Among adults aged 31 years and older, those in higher quintiles of Healthy Eating Index 2015 score had significantly lower odds of elevated AL compared with the lowest quintile (P for trend < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that, in adults older than age 30 years, consuming a more healthful diet is inversely associated with AL.

BACKGROUND: South Asians are at higher risk for cardiometabolic disease than many other racial/ethnic minority groups. Diet patterns in US South Asians have unique components associated with cardiometabolic disease. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to characterize the metabolites associated with 3 representative diet patterns. METHODS: We included 722 participants in the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) cohort study aged 40-84 y without known cardiovascular disease. Fasting serum specimens and diet and demographic questionnaires were collected at baseline and diet patterns previously generated through principal components analysis. LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic analysis was conducted with targeted integration of known metabolite and lipid signals. Linear regression models of diet pattern factor score and log-transformed metabolites adjusted for age, sex, caloric intake, and BMI and adjusted for multiple comparisons were performed, followed by elastic net linear regression of significant metabolites. RESULTS: There were 443 metabolites of known identity extracted from the profiling data. The "animal protein" diet pattern was associated with 61 metabolites and lipids, including glycerophospholipids phosphatidylethanolamine PE(O-16:1/20:4) and/or PE(P-16:0/20:4) (ß: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.14) and N-acyl phosphatidylethanolamines (NAPEs) NAPE(O-18:1/20:4/18:0) and/or NAPE(P-18:0/20:4/18:0) (ß: 0.13; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.14), lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI) (22:6/0:0) (ß: 0.14; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.17), and fatty acid (FA) (22:6) (ß: 0.15; 95% CI: 0.13, 0.17). The "fried snacks, sweets, high-fat dairy" pattern was associated with 12 lipids, including PC(16:0/22:6) (ß: -0.08; 95% CI: -0.09, -0.06) and FA (22:6) (ß: 0.14; 95% CI: -0.17, -0.10). The "fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes" pattern was associated with 5 metabolites including proline betaine (ß: 0.17; 95% CI: 0.09, 0.25) (P < 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS: Three predominant dietary patterns in US South Asians are associated with circulating metabolites differentiated by lipids including glycerophospholipids and PUFAs and the amino acid proline betaine.

BACKGROUND: Diet quality may be protective of physical function and muscle strength during aging. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate associations of the Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet with physical function and grip strength. METHODS: Data were obtained from men and women in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (mean ± SD age: 68 ± 14 y at first diet visit; n = 1358). Diet was assessed by FFQ. MIND diet score was calculated from 15 food groups, with a higher score indicating better diet quality; tertile categories of averaged MIND score across visits were used. Physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), with a score < 10 indicative of impaired function, and the Health, Aging and Body Composition Physical Performance Battery (HABCPPB). The highest value of grip strength over 3 trials was used. Multivariable logistic and linear mixed-effects models were examined with repeated measurements of physical function and grip strength, respectively. RESULTS: MIND score was inversely associated with physical function impairment (per 1-point increment: OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.71, 0.93; P < 0.01), and with each SPPB component, over a median 6 y of follow-up. Participants in the highest compared with the lowest tertile of MIND diet score had 57% lower odds of functional impairment (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.73; P < 0.01), and slower decline by the HABCPPB. Men and women in the highest compared with the lowest tertiles of MIND score had 1.86-kg (95% CI: 0.33, 3.40 kg; P < 0.05) and 1.24-kg (95% CI: 0.04, 2.45 kg; P < 0.05) greater grip strength, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to the MIND dietary pattern was associated with lower odds of physical function impairment and decline, and with better muscle strength, indicating that the MIND dietary pattern may be protective of physical functional health in older adults.
