RESUMO

Water reuse for potable purposes can represent a realistic source supply of drinking water in areas with water scarcity. Therefore, combining conventional wastewater treatment technologies with advanced technologies is necessary to remove contaminants and obtain high-quality and safe water. In this study, the pesticides and degradation products, atrazine (ATZ), hydroxyatrazine (ATZOH), deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), simazine (SMZ), ametryn (AMT), diuron (DIU), 2,4-D, fipronil (FIP), fipronil sulfide (FIP-SF) and fipronil sulfone (FIP-SN) were evaluated in effluent after membrane bioreactor (MBR), effluent after advanced treatment by multiple barriers (MBR, reverse osmosis, UV/H2O2 and activated carbon), in tap water collected in the urban region of Campinas and in the Atibaia River (water supply source from city of Campinas). The pesticide concentrations in the Atibaia River and the post-MBR effluent ranged between 1 and 434 ng L-1 and 1 and 470 ng L-1, respectively. Therefore, the Atibaia River and the post-MBR effluent had the same magnitude pesticide concentrations. In the production of potable water reuse, after the multiple barriers processes, only fipronil (1 ng L-1) and atrazine (3 ng L-1) were quantified in some of the samples. In tap water from Campinas, atrazine, ATZOH, DEA, diuron, and 2,4-D were quantified in concentrations ranging between 3 and 425 ng L-1. Therefore, when comparing drinking water obtained from conventional treatment with potable water reuse, according to the pesticides studied, it is possible to conclude that the advanced treatment used on a pilot scale is promising for use in a potable water reuse plant. However, studies involving more microbiological and chemical parameters should be conducted to classify potable water reuse as drinking water.

RESUMO

Separation of domestic effluents at the source and the utilization of low-flush toilets offer alternative approaches for developing efficient wastewater treatment systems while promoting energy generation through anaerobic digestion. This study focused on assessing toilet usage in Mexico and exploring the potential of anaerobic co-digestion of brown water (feces) and toilet paper as influential factors in wastewater treatment systems. A survey was conducted on a representative sample of Mexicans to gather information on toilet usage frequency, toilet paper use and disposal practices, as well as the type and quantity of commercial disinfectants and pharmaceutical compounds they use or consume. The survey revealed that per capita toilet paper consumption is 2.9 kg annually, that 58 % of respondents do not dispose used paper in the toilet, and that about 47 % use two to three cleaning and disinfection products. Notably, 97 % of the sampled Mexican population expressed a willingness to transition to more eco-friendly toilet options. Subsequently, in a second step, the anaerobic co-digestion of brown water with toilet paper was evaluated, demonstrating a relatively high production of volatile fatty acids but low methane production. This suggests an efficient hydrolysis/acidogenesis process coupled with restrained methanogenesis, probably due to pH decrease caused by acidogenesis. This study underscores that toilet paper and brown water are potential suitable substrates for anaerobic co-digestion. Furthermore, it sheds light on the behaviors of Mexican society regarding bathroom use and cleaning, contributing to the establishment of foundations for wastewater treatment systems with effluent separation at the source.

RESUMO

Urban stream monitoring programs rarely consider the daily cycle of water quality. Furthermore, water quality indexes (WQIs) often rely on an excessive number of correlated parameters. To the best of our knowledge, no previous study used both the principal component analysis (PCA) and the daily cycle of the water quality of urban streams to create better WQIs. In this context, the present study aimed to develop a novel urban WQI (WQIurban) considering these two factors. Moreover, the main WQI in Brazil for water quality assessment for public supply (WQIcetesb) was used as a starting point (parameters: total solids (TS), temperature, turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and thermotolerant coliforms (Escherichia coli)). The selected parameters to integrate the WQIurban received weights according to their importance for the conformation of water quality and a quality value was assigned to each parameter as a function of its concentration or measure. The developed WQIurban (parameters: pH, TS, E. coli, and DO) was able to maintain the seasonal and daily patterns of the urban stream water quality compared to the WQIcetesb. Nevertheless, the spatial relationship among the sampling sites was somewhat lacking. Our findings can help environmental managers, policy planners, and local researchers to improve their urban stream monitoring programs, saving money, time, and resources. Moreover, the WQIurban can be helpful during exceptional circumstances in which the water quality of urban streams must be quickly assessed.

RESUMO

Urban expansion in Brazilian coastal zones has caused various anthropic impacts on coastal marine ecosystems that have resulted from unorganized use and the lack of infrastructure projects. The inadequate disposal of domestic and industrial effluents in coastal waterbodies is notable, which can cause severe environmental problems. For sandy beaches, the relationships between the contamination of groundwater with domestic sewage and the possible effects on spatial and temporal variations in the density and composition of benthic infauna are still poorly understood. This work aimed to relate variations in benthic infaunal associations with the concentrations of groundwater nutrients in summer and winter on Enseada Beach. The greater concentrations of nutrients in water percolating through the sediment in the summer, increasing of domestic effluents, and periods of intense precipitation increased the contamination of the surface and groundwater. This contributes to an increase in the population density of Thoracophelia furcifera, demonstrating its use as an indicator of eutrophication of the groundwater, allowing monitoring and contribution to actions aimed at improving the environmental quality of sandy beaches.

Abstract Increasing pollution of marine and estuarine environments from wastewater discharge is a worldwide problem. Eco-toxicological tests are widely used to monitor the effects of this type of pollution and are currently being incorporated into the environmental legislation of several countries, including Brazil. However, few studies have been conducted in coastal areas, and standardization of methods with native organisms representative of local ecosystems is insufficient. Nitocra sp. has been efficiently used in ecotoxicological tests with sediments and interstitial waters, and its suitability for estuarine surface water analysis needs to be assessed. Point samples from the lower Jundiaí-Potengi estuary (JPE) in areas with (CE) and without (SE) discharge of treated effluents were collected monthly for 18 months. Nitocra sp. and Mysidopsis juniae (standardized species) were the test organisms used in the ecotoxicological assays. The lethal (mortality rate) and sublethal (reproduction rate) effects were analyzed considering the microbiological and physicochemical characterization of the tested samples. Dissolved oxygen, salinity, biochemical oxygen demand, ammoniacal and total ammoniacal nitrogen, total nitrogen, oils and greases, suspended and settleable solids, total potas-sium and thermotolerant coliform bacteria determined in samples from CE and SE, reflect varying levels of pollution at the sampled sites. The control charts of Nitoera sp. and M. juniae indicated good reproducibility in the laboratory, and although the test organisms had different ecotoxicological profiles, the mortality rate of both organisms was related to the discharge of treated wastewater. The use of different test organisms increases the representativeness of the ecotoxicological tests. Given the profile of Nitoera sp. in JPE monitoring, further studies, including the use of nauplii in bioassays, are needed to establish it as standardized test organism.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT This research aimed to investigate the relation between sanitary situation and groundwater quality, using the concentration of nitrogenous compounds. The aquifer studied is unconfined and situated in the periurban zone of Fortaleza (NE Brazil). Through the Geographic Information System (GIS), a relational database was created using data from the IBGE demographic census (2011), to analyze numbers of households linked to septic tanks or rudimentary cesspit. The groundwater quality was evaluated based on nitrogen compounds (N-NH3 +; NO2 -; N-NO3 -), pH, and total dissolved solids (TDS). The highest concentrations of nitrates are found in areas with a higher density of septic tanks and rudimentary cesspit. Furthermore, nitrate was more present in water table above 6.6 m, mainly in the interfluvial zones, which have a high oxidation potential. The results contribute to the loss of contamination, based on the number of households with septic tanks and rudimentary cesspit, in unconfined aquifers, which were more vulnerable to contamination, mainly in peripheric expansions areas in the cities, where the deficit in sewage services tends to be high.

ABSTRACT Non-treated wastewater is responsible for the pollution of urban rivers, and it is mandatory to evaluate the behavior of these rivers before and after the construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The aim of this study was to evaluate the water quality of São Domingos River (SDR) after the start of the Catanduva/SP WWTP operation, whose average removal efficiencies were: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD; 93.71%), ammonia nitrogen (73.12%), total phosphorus (25.70%), turbidity (85.16%), and total solids (31.75%). We used 768 data collected upstream and downstream of the city of Catanduva/SP, previously analyzed by CETESB (state environmental agency). Dredging works carried out during the evaluated period were responsible for a significant temporary worsening in the water quality of the SDR in Catanduva. Two years after the beginning of the Catanduva WWTP, there was a significant improvement in SDR water quality, with a reduction in the average concentrations of BOD (20.97 to 5.73 mg.L−1), ammonia nitrogen (3.84 for 0.99 mg.L−1), and Escherichia coli (105 to 104 CFU.100 mL−1) were reduced; and DO concentration (0.90 to 3.12 mg.L−1) increased. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated that the water quality of the river downstream of Catanduva is approaching the same quality verified upstream of the city. These data suggest that SDR may be considered a Class 3 river (Resolution CONAMA 357/05) in the future and may even be used for human supply, reducing the high demand for groundwater in the region.

RESUMO

Mangrove forests worldwide are threatened environments considered vulnerable to chronic contamination by hydrophobic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These ecosystems have a key role in the dynamics of biogenic and anthropogenic carbon storage and provide proper conditions for accumulation. One of most important subtropical mangrove swamps in the South Atlantic is located in the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES), the largest bay of South Brazil surrounded by well-preserved Atlantic rainforests; however, the PES is under imminent risks of damage, e.g., due to incidental oil spills during port operations. In this scenario, PAHs were assessed for the first time in the mangrove sediments of the PES. The concentrations of 16 priority PAHs (EPA) (

RESUMO

Nitrogen enters estuaries mostly through fluvial discharge and tide, although anthropogenic sources are known to influence the amount of this element in these aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the objective of this work was to verify which river (Cachoeira, Fundão, and/or Santana) exerts greater influence on the distribution of dissolved N forms (Dissolved Organic Nitrogen and Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen = NH3/NH4+, NO2-, and NO3-) along a tropical urbanized estuarine system in northeastern Brazil. The studies estuarine system lies with in urban municipality, and the upper portion of the Cachoeira river estuary receives the treated effluent from this municipality through a sewage treatment station and untreated effluents from nearby villages. The selected sampling stations were located near the outfall of the rivers in the estuaries to the treatment plant and the villages. Of all the nitrogen forms, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) prevailed in the estuarine system, followed by nitrate (NO3-) as the main inorganic form. The highest concentrations were recorded in the fluvial portion and upper estuary of Cachoeira river in the dry season. Based on the N concentrations found in the estuarine system, Cachoeira river has the greatest anthropogenic influence due to the amount of untreated effluents from the villages and treated effluents from the sewage treatment plant (STP) in the upper portion of the estuary.

RESUMO

The lower Seine River is severely affected by the release of the treated wastewater from the 12 million inhabitants of the Paris agglomeration. Whereas urban effluents were the major source of phosphorus pollution in the late 1980s, the ban on polyphosphates from detergents in 1991 considerably reduced the phosphorus (P) loading to the Seine River and was followed in 2000 by the implementation of phosphorus treatment in the largest wastewater treatment plant of Paris conurbation (Seine Aval). Phosphorus discharged to the rivers from domestic wastewater was reduced by 80 %, significantly decreasing phytoplankton biomass in the large branches of the Seine River. Considering that phosphorus treatment (the use of ferric salts in the P treatment line) might change the adsorption of ortho-phosphates on suspended matter, we experimentally studied again their sorption processes in these new conditions. We found parameters of the Langmuir equation (Pac = 0.003 mgP mgSS-1; Kps = 0.04 mgP L-1) that significantly differed from the values previously considered for modeling of the whole Seine, especially for Kps (Pac = 0.0055 mgP mgSS-1; Kps = 0.7 mgP L-1). Using the Seneque-Rivertrahler modeling approach, we showed a better agreement between P observations and simulations with the new P sorption parameters, with slight effect on the simulation of the development of phytoplankton in the water column.

RESUMO

Lipid and fatty acid (FA) composition and selected oxidative stress parameters of freshwater clams (Dipolodon chilensis), from a sewage-polluted (SMA) and a clean site, were compared. Trophic markers FA were analyzed in clams and sediment. Saturated FA (SAFA), and bacteria and sewage markers were abundant in SMA sediments, while diatom markers were 50% lower. Proportions of SAFA, branched FA, 20:5n-3 (EPA) and 22:6n-3 (DHA) were higher in SMA clams. Chronic exposure of D. chilensis to increasing eutrophication affected its lipid and FA composition. The increase in EPA and DHA proportions could be an adaptive response, which increases stress resistance but could also lead to higher susceptibility to lipid peroxidation TBARS, lipofuscins (20-fold) and GSH concentrations were higher in SMA clams. FA markers indicated terrestrial plant detritus and bacteria are important items in D. chilensis diet. Anthropogenic input in their food could be traced using specific FA as trophic markers.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the water quality in the Tigreiro river, Jacuí river Basin, using different approaches. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled in July 2010 (winter) and February 2011 (summer) at five sites. In this study were analyzed: microbiological, physical and chemical variables, benthic macroinvertebrates richness and diversity, rapid ecological assessment protocol and benthic biotic indices (% EPT, BMWP'-IAP, ASPT, SOMI). A total of 5,852 individuals were collected belonging to 31 taxa of three Phyla: Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda. Chironomidae was the most abundant taxon (63.70%). A reduction in richness, diversity H' and evenness J' was observed from the initial stretches to the end stretches of Tigreiro river. The use of different approaches showed that sites in the rural area were less altered. The Tigreiro river was strongly impacted, mainly due to discharge of domestic effluents in the urban area, and the combination of different metrics was useful to detect impacted sites and the consequence for the water quality.
