RESUMO

Virtue ethics and normative ethics are corresponding ethical concepts, and their collision and integration promote the development of ethical system. On the issue of doctor-patient relationship, from virtue to norm is the objective requirement of social transformation and development, and is also the inevitable choice to resolve doctor-patient conflicts and reshape doctor-patient relationships. In the new era, the construction of doctor-patient relationship faces ethical dilemma such as one-sided emphasis on doctors’ virtue cultivation, unclear ethical responsibilities between doctors and patients, and lack of trust and tolerance between doctors and patients. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the institutionalization of doctor ethics, clarify the ethical responsibilities of both doctors and patients, optimize the social ethical ecological environment, so as to realize the ethical reconstruction of doctor-patient relationship from virtue to norm.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To evaluate students' ethical reasoning skills after implementation of a series of online modules containing ethical content. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: A four-module online ethics series was created and embedded in the learning management system of a second-year pharmacy skills lab course. The Defining Issues Test Version 2 (DIT-2) was administered before and after completion of the ethics module series. Results of the DIT-2 were used to evaluate the impact of the modules on students' ethical thinking ability. An optional written survey utilizing Likert-scale questions was administered at the end of the study to assess students' perceptions of the course. FINDINGS: A total of 134 students were enrolled in this study. After removal of voluntary exclusions and unreliable data, 107 DIT-2 tests were evaluated. The study failed to demonstrate a statistically significant increase in pre- and posttest DIT-2 scores. Student scores were higher than other pharmacy students' scores that were previously reported in the literature. Thirty-four (26.1%) students participated in the optional survey. The results demonstrated perceived value of the online ethics series, with students indicating improved understanding, confidence, and ability to consider other perspectives when dealing with medical ethical dilemmas. SUMMARY: Implementing an online ethics series into a pharmacy curriculum failed to produce statistically significant increases in ethical thinking ability as measured by the DIT-2. However, students indicated a benefit from participating in the course as evidenced by responses to a post-course survey.

RESUMO

AIM: Clinical supervisors are appointed to ensure that medical trainees receive a satisfactory education, improve their academic orientation and develop professional attitudes. The aim of this study was to find out, from the paediatric trainee's perspective, how their clinical supervisor could best do that. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with seven paediatric trainees in a university hospital. A template analysis of the transcribed data explored what trainees expect from their clinical supervisors and what they would change if they could. RESULTS: Trainees wanted the supervision process to begin with negotiating how their supervisory relationship would be structured and how the time could be used to best effect. They wanted their supervisors to provide them with stimulating, multifaceted guidance and encouragement and support a reflective approach that linked theory with practice. CONCLUSION: Trainees wanted their supervisors to support them as they took a reflective approach to their practical work and to help them to bridge theoretical and applied learning.

RESUMO

Clinical cases requiring bioethical thinking and decision-making have become more complex owing to advances in medical technology and changes in family relationships. In addition, members of medical staff are asked to acquire the ability to think in terms of bioethics. For training in such ability, the use of case studies is important and essential. For a medical ethics class we created 30 cases involving communication between patients and physicians, changes in family relationships, and advanced medical technology, such as genetic diagnosis and gene therapy. We asked all second-year medical students of the Osaka University Medical School to think about these 30 cases and answer questionnaires about bioethics. We believe the case-study method is effective for training students in the ability to think in terms of bioethics.
