All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots with the usual cubic shape have emerged as a successful and low-cost alternative to electronically functional nanomaterials motivating various fields of applications, including high-efficiency photovoltaics. Here, we present an efficient and almost analytic approach for optical absorption coefficient calculation on self-assembled perovskite quantum dot films with type-II band alignment. The approach takes advantage of the special point technique for integration over the two-dimensional Brillouin zone, which minimizes the computational cost. The set of special wave-vector points is generated using the Monkhorst and Pack method. The optical absorption spectrum for phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)/CsPbI3quantum dot films is computed, in good agreement with the experiment assuming a homogeneous linewidth of 50 meV and considering a ten special-point set. We show that light absorption in these systems is a cooperative optoelectronic property resulting from the quantum-mechanical coupling between perovskite nanocubes, leading to extended system states. The generality of this approach makes it suitable for calculating the optical absorption coefficient in a broad class of perovskite quantum dot systems.

Antioxidant films were prepared using poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) incorporated with 0.5% or 1.0% zinc oxide (ZnO)-flavonoid (quercetin or morin) nanoparticles (NPZnO-Q% or NPZnO-M%) via the casting method. NP incorporation within the polymer matrix influenced the structural, morphological, optical, and thermal properties of the PVC-based films, as well as their antioxidant activity as assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging method. Our results indicated that increasing ZnO-flavonoid NP concentration increased films thickness, while reducing ultraviolet light (UV) transmittance but conserving transparency. The presence of NPZnO-Q% or NPZnO-M% improved the surface uniformity and thermal stability of the active films. In terms of antioxidant activity, there was an enhancement in the DPPH radical scavenging capacity (PVC/ZnO-Q1.0% > PVC/ZnO-Q0.5% > PVC/ZnO-M0.5% > PVC/ZnO-M1.0% > PVC), suggesting that the packaging can help protect food from oxidative processes. Therefore, these antioxidant films represent an innovative strategy for using as active food packaging material, especially intended for aiding in quality preservation and extending the shelf life of fatty foods.

This research evaluates the use of cassava bagasse starch and oregano essential oil (OEO) in an active film. For comparison, films of cassava starch (CS) and cassava bagasse starch (BS) were prepared with OEO at 1, 2, and 3 %. Physical, thermal, mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties were determined. BS films presented higher thickness, WVP, ΔE, modulus of elasticity, and maximum stress, but lower strain at break compared to CS films. Adding OEO into the films increased their thickness, moisture, solubility, WVP and strain at break. However, maximum stress, modulus of elasticity, and T dmax decreased. The CS films added with 3 % of OEO showed higher WVP (6.32 × 10-14 kg m/m2.s.Pa), intermediate solubility of 39 % and low maximum stress (0.19 MPa) while the BS film with 3 % of OEO presented 5.73 × 10-14 kg m/m2.s.Pa, 30 % and 0.39 MPa, respectively. The increase from 1 % to 3 % of OEO increased the total phenolic compound content and antioxidant activity of the films by 1.3-fold and 3.7-fold, respectively. The incorporation of 3 % OEO in the films inhibited the growth of S. aureus and E. coli. Therefore, BS and OEO films offer a promising solution as biodegradable active food packaging, providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional non-biodegradable plastic packaging.

Biodegradation poses a challenge for environmentalists and scientific community, offering a potential solution to the plastic waste problem. This study aims to investigate the biological degradation of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags by a fungus in both batch and continuous cultures, with the goal of identifying an eco-friendly and cost-effective waste management strategy. The fungal strain Rhizopus arrhizus SLNEA1, isolated from a landfill located in northeastern Algeria, was tested for its capability to degrade LDPE films and utilize them as a sole carbon source in batch (α-LDPE) and continuous (γ-LDPE) cultures. The results indicated a higher rate of weight loss for γ-LDPE (29.74%) compared to α-LDPE (23.77%). The biodegradation effect was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) to evaluate morphological and chemical changes in LDPE samples, highlighting alterations of LDPE films through cracks, veins and holes under SEM and chemical transformation and appearance of new functional groups in the FTIR data. Rhizopus arrhizus SLNEA1 demonstrated the ability to break down and utilize LDPE films as a carbon source. This isolate shows promise for LDPE biodegradation applications, which may be leveraged for the development of future plastic degradation systems involving fungi.

We report the dynamic effects of magnetic inhomogeneity on the temperature evolution of the Raman modes in polycrystalline La2CoMnO6 (LCMO) films. The LCMO films were obtained via chemical solution deposition and annealed at different temperatures, 700, 800 and 900 °C. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopic studies uncover anomalous phonon energy behaviors, associated with strong spin-phonon couplings revealed even at ambient conditions. This effect, which is observed to occur well above ferromagnetic ordering temperature is ascribed to short-range Mn4+/Co2+ ferromagnetic clusters. Moreover, our study has shown that spin-phonon coupling strength is governed by competing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) interactions. These results significantly enhance the understanding of the complex spin-phonon coupling mechanism to provide insights into magnetic inhomogeneity in systems with two or more magnetic sublattices. These findings suggest the presence of similar effects in other double perovskites within the RE2CoMnO6 (RE = rare earths) family, which exhibit analogous magnetic sublattice and order-disorder defects.

We fabricated ultrathin metal - oxide - semiconductor (MOS) nanocapacitors using atomic layer deposition. The capacitors consist of a bilayer of Al2O3 and Y2O3 with a total thickness of ~10 nm, deposited on silicon substrate. The presence of the two materials, each slab being ~5 nm thick and uniform over a large area, was confirmed with Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The capacitance in accumulation varied from 1.6 nF (at 1MHz) to ~2.8 nF (at 10 kHz), which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than other nanocapacitors. This high capacitance is attributed to the synergy between the dielectric properties of ultrathin Al2O3 and Y2O3 layers. The electrical properties of the nanocapacitor are stable within a wide range of temperatures, from 25 °C to 150 °C, as indicated by capacitance-voltage (C - V). Since the thickness-to-area ratio is negligible, the nanocapacitor could be simulated as a single parallel plate capacitor in COMSOL Multiphysics, with good agreement between experimental and simulation data. As a proof-of-concept we simulated a MOSFET device with the nanocapacitor gate dielectric, whose drain current is sufficiently high for micro and nanoelectronics integrated circuits, including for applications in sensing.

The escalating environmental impact of plastic packaging waste necessitates sustainable alternatives in food packaging. This study explores starch-based films derived from cassava and potato as viable substitutes, aiming to mitigate plastic pollution and enhance environmental sustainability. Utilizing a casting method, formulations optimized by CCRD were characterized for their physical, physicochemical, and morphological properties. Comprehensive analysis revealed both cassava and potato starch films to exhibit robust structural integrity, high tensile strength (up to 32.6 MPa for cassava starch films), and semi-crystalline morphology. These films demonstrated low water vapor permeability and moderate solubility, akin to conventional low-density polyethylene used in packaging. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated glass transition temperatures between 116.36 °C and 119.35 °C, affirming thermal stability suitable for packaging applications. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed homogeneous film surfaces, with cassava starch films (C4-15) exhibiting superior transparency and uniformity. X-ray diffraction corroborated the films' semi-crystalline nature, unaffected by sorbitol content variations. Despite their mechanical and thermal suitability, further enhancements in thermal degradation resistance are essential for broader thermoprocessing applicability. These findings underscore the potential of starch-based films to be used as lids or other part of a food package, decreasing the plastic dependency in food packaging, contributing decisively to waste reduction and environmental preservation.

Considering the potential of biopolymers from underutilized Andean sources in Peru to improve the characteristics of edible films, this work aimed to evaluate the formation of a polymeric matrix composed of Nostoc and modified potato starch for the formulation of edible films for food coating. The effects of polymer matrix ratio and drying temperature on films obtained by thermoforming were studied, determining the water vapor permeability and mechanical properties using a multifactorial design. Additionally, thermal properties were characterized by TGA and DSC, and structural properties by FT-IR and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the films exhibited lower solubility, lighter hues, better water vapor resistance, higher tensile strength, and improved thermal stability with increasing modified starch content. The formulation with higher Nostoc content exhibited a more homogeneous surface according to microscopy images, and no new chemical bonds were formed by adding modified starch and Nostoc to the polymer matrix, according to FT-IR spectra. These findings are promising and suggest using Nostoc for elaborating edible films composed of native and modified starch from native Andean potatoes as bio-based materials with potential application in the food industry.

Biopolymer-based films are a promising alternative for the food packaging industry, in which petrochemical-based polymers like low-density polyethylene (LDPE) are commanding attention because of their high pollution levels. In this research, a biopolymer-based film made of chitosan (CS), gelatin (GEL), and glycerol (GLY) was designed. A Response Surface Methodology (RSM) analysis was performed to determine the chitosan, gelatin, and glycerol content that improved the mechanical properties selected as response variables (thickness, tensile strength (TS), and elongation at break (EAB). The content of CS (1.1% w/v), GEL (1.1% w/v), and GLY (0.4% w/v) in the film-forming solution guarantees an optimized film (OPT-F) with a 0.046 ± 0.003 mm thickness, 11.48 ± 1.42 mPa TS, and 2.6 ± 0.3% EAB. The OPT-F was characterized in terms of thermal, optical, and biodegradability properties compared to LDPE films. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the OPT-F was thermally stable at temperatures below 300 °C, which is relevant to thermal processes in the food industry of packaging. The reduced water solubility (WS) (24.34 ± 2.47%) and the improved biodegradability properties (7.1%) compared with LDPE suggests that the biopolymer-based film obtained has potential applications in the food industry as a novel packaging material and can serve as a basis for the design of bioactive packaging.

Garambullo is a plant with little industrial application. However, garambullo contains betalains, photosensitive phytochemical compounds, which through microencapsulation can be used in chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) films for application in tomato coatings. These biopackages were characterized by physical tests, water vapor permeability, puncture tests, extension, color, differential scanning calorimetry (DCS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activity analyses. The influence of the biopackages on the tomato coatings was measured using parameters such as minimum weight loss close to 2% at day 9, pH of 4.6, Brix of 5.5, titratable acidity of 1 g acid/100 mL sample, and shelf life of up to 18 days. The biopackages containing betalain microcapsules had a water vapor permeability of 2 × 10-14 g/h·m·Pa and an elongation of 5 ± 0.5%, indicating that the package did not stretch. The deformation at the breaking point for the package without and with microcapsules was 0.569 and 1.620, respectively. With respect to color, adding white microcapsules and betalains can cause the material to darken, resulting in a yellowish color. Furthermore, the phenolic content was greater for the biopackages with betalains, while there was no significant difference in the antioxidant activity since the active compounds were not released. According to the in vitro results, the inhibition of B. cinerea was achieved on the eighth day when the active compounds were released from the microcapsules. The tomato with betalains lost 2% of its weight, and B. cinerea was inhibited, extending its shelf life to 18 days. The proposed biopackages have good properties as biopolymers and inhibit the presence of B. cinerea.

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a multi-hurdle process combining mild High Hydrostatic Pressure (HHP) treatments and Thyme Oil (TO) edible films as a non-thermal method to combat pathogenic E. coli (aEPEC and STEC) in raw cow's-milk cheese stored at 7 °C and packaged under modified atmosphere. Changes in headspace atmosphere of cheese packs and treatment effects on Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) counts and diarrheagenic E. coli strains (aEPEC and STEC) were evaluated over a 28 d storage period. The results demonstrated that the combined treatment exhibited the most significant antimicrobial effect against both strains compared to individual treatments, achieving reductions of 4.30 and 4.80 log cfu/g after 28 d of storage for aEPEC and STEC, respectively. Notably, the synergistic effect of the combination treatment resulted in the complete inactivation of intact cells for STEC and nearly completed inactivation for aEPEC by the end of the storage period. These findings suggest that the combination of HHP with selected hurdles could effectively enhance microbial inactivation capacity, offering promising alternatives for improving cheese safety without affecting the starter microbiota.

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) flour seeds produce films with good barrier properties against water vapor and could be used as food packaging; however, their mechanical properties are poor, which limits their application. The incorporation of nanoparticles into natural polymers is a strategy used to improve the properties of films to increase their applications. Furthermore, nanoparticles can encapsulate antioxidant agents and generate active films. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of chia flour (4%-7%), glycerol (15%-25%), and chia extract-loaded chitosan nanoparticles (ChCNp) (0%-0.75%) on the physical, mechanical, barrier, structural and antioxidant properties of chia flour nanocomposite films. Chitosan nanoparticles loaded with antioxidant chia extract were synthesized by ionic gelation and incorporated into the films. The thickness, water vapor permeability, tensile strength, and antioxidant properties of the films were evaluated using a Box-Behnken experimental design. Structural analysis was conducted using the FTIR technique. The results of the ANOVA of the responses were adjusted to second and third order polynomial models obtaining determination coefficients of 0.96-0.99. The water vapor permeability of the films was 3.89 × 10-8-1.68 × 10-7 g mm/Pa s m2, tensile strength was 0.67-3.59 MPa and antioxidant activity was 57.12%-67.84%. The variables presented different effects on the films. Increasing the chia seed flour concentration negatively affected the water vapor permeability but improved the tensile strength and the antioxidant capacity of the films. The increase in glycerol concentration caused the films to become brittle. The nanoparticles had a significant effect on the thickness of the films and improved their mechanical and antioxidant properties. However, they did not show an effect on barrier properties. The results demonstrate that it is possible to obtain nanocomposite films with antioxidant capacity from chia seed flour and with the incorporation of chitosan nanoparticles loaded with antioxidants.

Thin films of transition metal oxides and oxynitrides have proven highly effective in protecting stainless steels against corrosion in both chemically aggressive environments and biological fluids. In the present work, cerium zirconium oxynitride thin films were deposited to enhance the corrosion resistance of surgical-grade stainless steel to be used in osteosynthesis processes. Two techniques were employed: co-sputtering and radiofrequency (RF) sputtering, and the morphology and corrosion efficiency of the coatings deposited by each technique were evaluated. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and field emission transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphological and chemical structure, respectively. Additionally, the corrosion resistance of the oxynitride-coated surgical grade stainless steel system (ZrCeOxNy-AISI 316L) was assessed using Hank's solution as the corrosive electrolyte, to determine its resistance to corrosion in biological media. The results show that ZrCeOxNy coatings increase the corrosion resistance of surgical grade stainless steel by two orders of magnitude and that the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) equilibrium decreases the corrosion rate, thereby increasing the durability of the steel in a biological environment. The rapid advancement of technology necessitates the continual development of versatile materials that can adapt to new electronic devices. Rare earth elements, which are scarce in nature, possess the set of properties required for use as semiconductors. Consequently, this research aims to achieve similar properties using materials that are abundant in nature and have a low commercial cost. To this end, nickel and copper were utilized to synthesize thin films of nickel-copper binary oxynitride via reactive RF sputtering. The influence of nitrogen flow on the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and optical properties of the films was investigated using various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), as well as transmittance and absorbance measurements. The crystalline structure of the films shows that they can have preferential growth or be polycrystalline according to the nitrogen flow used during deposition and that both the oxides and oxynitrides of metals are formed. We identified unknown phases specific to this material, termed "NiCuOxNy". The morphology revealed that the grain size of the coatings was dependent on the nitrogen flow rate, with grain size decreasing as the nitrogen flow rate increased. Notably, the coatings demonstrated transparency for wavelengths exceeding 1000 nm, with an optical band gap ranging from 1.21 to 1.86 eV.

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% has been studied. The effect of MWCNTs on thermal, viscoelastic, and electric properties in the TPU matrix was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and by impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the thermal, electrical, and viscoelastic properties, such as the glass transition temperature, shifted towards high temperatures. The melting temperature decreased, and the conductivity and the storage modulus increased by 61.5 % and 58.3 %. The previously observed behavior on the films is due to the increase in the mass percentage of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the TPU matrix. Also, it can be said that the CNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the TPU matrix, preventing the movement of the polymer chains, and generating channels or connections that increase the conductivity and improve the thermal properties of the material.

New wound dressings based on polymeric membranes have been widely exploited for clinical applications to assist in the healing process and prevent additional complications (e.g., bacterial infections). Here we propose the development of a new production method of polymeric membranes based on chitosan, incorporating glycolic extract of Aloe vera with joint synthesis of silver nanoparticles for use as a new bioactive dressing. The membranes were obtained by casting technique, and their morphological, physicochemical characteristics, degree of swelling, degradation profile and antimicrobial activity evaluated. Morphological analyzes confirmed the synthesis and presence of silver nanoparticles in the polymeric membrane. The chemical compatibility between the materials was demonstrated through thermal analysis (TGA and DSC) combined with ATR-FTIR tests, showing the complexation of the membranes (Mb-Ch-Ex.Av-NPs). All membranes were characterized as hydrophilic material (with a contact angle (Ó©) < 90°); however, the highest degree of swelling was obtained for the chitosan. (Mb-Ch) membrane (69.91 ± 5.75%) and the lowest for Mb-Ch-Ex.Av-NPs (26.62 ± 8.93%). On the other hand, the degradation profile was higher for Mb-Ch-Ex.Av-NPs (77.85 ± 7.51%) and lower for Mb-Ch (57.60 ± 2.29%). The manufactured bioactive dressings showed activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Our work confirmed the development of translucent and flexible chitosan-based membranes, incorporating Aloe vera glycolic extract with joint synthesis of silver nanoparticles for use as a new bioactive dressing, with proven antimicrobial activity.

In this work, novel nanocomposite films based on babassu coconut mesocarp and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), synthesized by a green route, were produced for application as food packaging films. The films were prepared using the casting method containing different contents of ZnO NPs (0 wt%, 0.1 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1.0 wt%). The films were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), instrumental color analysis, and optical properties. The water vapor permeability (WVP) and tensile strength of films were also determined. The antimicrobial activity of the films against cooked turkey ham samples contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. The results showed that incorporating ZnO NPs into babassu mesocarp matrices influenced the structure of the biopolymer chains and the color of the films. The BM/ZnO-0.5 film (0.5 wt% ZnO NPs) showed better thermal, mechanical, and WVP properties. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of babassu mesocarp and ZnO NPs in the BM/ZnO-0.5 film improved the antimicrobial properties of the material, reducing the microbial count of S. aureus in cooked turkey ham samples stored under refrigeration for 7 days. Thus, the films produced in this study showed promising antimicrobial packaging materials for processed foods.

Perovskite nanocrystals hold significant promise for a wide range of applications, including solar cells, LEDs, photocatalysts, humidity and temperature sensors, memory devices, and low-cost photodetectors. Such technological potential stems from their exceptional quantum efficiency and charge carrier conduction capability. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanisms of photoexcitation, such as phase segregation, annealing, and ionic diffusion, remain insufficiently understood. In this context, we harnessed hyperspectral fluorescence microspectroscopy to advance our comprehension of fluorescence enhancement triggered by UV continuous-wave (cw) laser irradiation of CsPbBr3 colloidal nanocrystal thin films. Initially, we explored the kinetics of fluorescence enhancement and observed that its efficiency (φph) correlates with the laser power (P), following the relationship φph = 7.7⟨P⟩0.47±0.02. Subsequently, we estimated the local temperature induced by the laser, utilizing the finite-difference method framework, and calculated the activation energy (Ea) required for fluorescence enhancement to occur. Our findings revealed a very low activation energy, Ea â¼ 9 kJ/mol. Moreover, we mapped the fluorescence photoenhancement by spatial scanning and real-time static mode to determine its microscale length. Below a laser power of 60 µW, the photothermal diffusion length exhibited nearly constant values of approximately (22 ± 5) µm, while a significant increase was observed at higher laser power levels. These results were ascribed to the formation of nanocrystal superclusters within the film, which involves the interparticle spacing reduction, creating the so-called quantum dot solid configuration along with laser-induced annealing for higher laser powers.

Sulfuric acid anodizing assisted by a hydrothermal sealing with inhibitors [Ce3+-Mo6+] was used to prevent pitting corrosion on spray-deposited hypereutectic Al-Si alloy (A390). An investigation concerning the evaluation of pitting corrosion resistance on the anodic oxide thin film with ions incorporated was carried out in NaCl solution using electrochemical measurements (i.e., potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, EIS). The influence of Si phase morphology and size on the growth mechanism of an anodic oxide film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results were then compared with those for its equivalent IM390 alloy (Al-17Si-4.5Cu-0.6Mg) produced through a conventional process ingot metallurgy, IM. The electrochemical findings indicate that sulfuric acid anodizing followed by a simple hot water sealing treatment was ineffective. In this manner, an intense attack was localized by pitting corrosion that occurred on the anodic oxide film in less than three days, as denoted by characteristic changes in the EIS spectra at the lowest frequencies. Improved results were achieved for Ce-Mo surface modification, which can provide better corrosion resistance on the aluminum alloys because no signs of pits were observed during the corrosion testing.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an opportunistic infection caused by a fungus of the Candida genus, affecting approximately 75 % of women during their lifetime. Fungal resistance cases and adverse effects have been the main challenges of oral therapies. In this study, the topical application of thin films containing fluconazole (FLU) and thymol (THY) was proposed to overcome these problems. Vaginal films based only on chitosan (CH) or combining this biopolymer with pectin (PEC) or hydroxypropylmethylcellulose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) were developed by the solvent casting method. In addition to a higher swelling index, CH/HPMCAS films showed to be more plastic and flexible than systems prepared with CH/PEC or only chitosan. Biopolymers and FLU were found in an amorphous state, contributing to explaining the rapid gel formation after contact with vaginal fluid. High permeability rates of FLU were also found after its immobilization into thin films. The presence of THY in polymer films increased the distribution of FLU in vaginal tissues and resulted in improved anti-Candida activity. A significant activity against the resistant C. glabrata was achieved, reducing the required FLU dose by 50 %. These results suggest that the developed polymer films represent a promising alternative for the treatment of resistant vulvovaginal candidiasis, encouraging further studies in this context.
