Introducción: el personal de enfermería enfrenta a diario jornadas extendidas de trabajo, tiene muchos pacientes a su cargo, dificultades en las relaciones interpersonales, que podrían desencadenar en estrés, para lo cual el individuo desarrolla un proceso de adaptación o desequilibrio y es por esta razón la importancia de contar con estrategias para afrontar las situaciones. Objetivos: el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar las estrategias de afrontamiento ante situaciones de estrés utilizadas por los profesionales de enfermería de un Hospital Público de la ciudad de Corrientes capital, así como su asociación con variables socio demográficas. Metodología: estudio de tipo cuantitativo, descriptivo, transversal y observacional. La población incluyó enfermeros de un hospital público de la ciudad de Corrientes en el período 2022. Se consideró como criterios de inclusión personal de enfermería que cumpla funciones asistenciales y su tiempo de labor fuera de 1 año o más; como criterios de exclusión, personal que tuviera dos o más puestos de trabajo y de criterios de eliminación aquellos enfermeros que no se encuentren presentes al momento de la encuesta. El cálculo del tamaño muestral se realizó a través del método probabilístico aleatorio simple resultando de éste 120 profesionales de enfermería. Para la recolección de datos, se aplicó una encuesta adaptada del cuestionario Ways of Coping Questionnaire de Lazarus y Folkman. Resultados: se evidenció que la estrategia de afrontamiento más utilizada por los enfermeros fue la reinterpretación positiva. Conclusión: a través de este estudio se logró reconocer las estrategias de afrontamiento que el personal de enfermería utilizó al momento de enfrentar situaciones o experiencias estresantes[AU]


Introduction: nursing staff face extended work days daily, have many patients under their care, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, which could trigger stress, for which the individual develops a process of adaptation or imbalance and it is for this reason the importance of having strategies to deal with situations. Objectives: the objective of this study was to analyze coping strategies in stressful situations used by nursing professionals from a Public Hospital in the capital city of Corrientes, as well as their association with sociodemographic variables. Methodology: quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study. The population included nurses from a public hospital in the city of Corrientes in the period 2022. Inclusion criteria were considered nursing personnel who perform care functions and their time of work was 1 year or more; as exclusion criteria, personnel who had two or more jobs and as elimination criteria those nurses who were not present at the time of the survey. The calculation of the sample size was carried out through the simple random probabilistic method, resulting in 120 nursing professionals. For data collection, a survey adapted from the Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Lazarus and Folkman was applied. Results: it was evidenced that the coping strategy most used by nurses was positive reinterpretation. Conclusion: through this study, it was possible to recognize the coping strategies that the nursing staff used when facing stressful situations or experiences[AU]


Introdução: a equipe de enfermagem enfrenta diariamente jorna-das de trabalho extensas, tem muitos pacientes sob seus cuidados, dificuldades no relacionamento interpessoal, podendo desenca-dear estresse, para o qual o indivíduo desenvolve um processo de adaptação ou desequilíbrio e por isso a importância de se ter estra-tégias para lidar com as situações. Objetivos: o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar as estratégias de enfrentamento em situações estressan-tes utilizadas por profissionais de enfermagem de um Hospital Pú-blico da capital Corrientes, bem como sua associação com variáveis sociodemográficas. Metodologia: estudo quantitativo, descritivo, transversal e observacional. A população incluiu enfermeiros de um hospital público da cidade de Corrientes no período de 2022. O cálculo do tamanho da amostra foi realizado pelo método probabilístico aleatório simples, resultando em 120 profissionais de enfermagem. Para a coleta de dados, foi aplicado um questionário adaptado do Questionário de Modos de Enfrentamento de Lazarus e Folkman. Resultados: evidenciou-se que a estratégia de enfrenta-mento mais utilizada pelos enfermeiros foi a reinterpretação posi-tiva. Conclusão: Por meio deste estudo, foi possível reconhecer as estratégias de enfrentamento que a equipe de enfermagem utiliza diante de situações ou experiências estressantes[AU]

BACKGROUND: Healthcare organizations need to attract and retain qualified nurses, and break areas may influence nurse engagement with breaks, but this has not been studied in situ. The goal of this study was to understand nurse perception of breaks and ways building design and culture impact the frequency, duration, and location of nurse breaks. METHODS: This was Part 1 of a two-part study. Mixed-method approaches included on-site behavior mapping, focus groups, online survey, and break room usage rates analysis. FINDINGS: In this study, nurses did not take restorative breaks but focused on quick "bio" breaks in rooms nearest the central nurse station. When nurses left care floors, they preferred the cafeteria and outdoor eating spaces. CONCLUSION: Nurses' proclivity to minimize restorative breaks remains a major organizational concern. Future studies should investigate leadership activities impacting nurses' perception of shifts and break-taking behavior. APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: By optimizing the break setting and changing the cultural perspective of breaks, occupational health services and healthcare management can support nurses' engagement in restorative activities.

Research indicates a higher prevalence of attention deficits in children exposed to HG in utero compared to controls with some claiming that the deficit is due to prenatal effects of malnutrition in HG mothers and others that it is due to maternal mental health after birth. The current study examines the effect of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) diagnosis during pregnancy on infant attention controlling for maternal stress, depression anxiety and attachment. Thirty-eight infants mean age 4 months were videotaped with their mothers (19 mothers with a hyperemesis diagnosis and 19 controls) during play with a soft toy and looking at a picture book. Infant attention was operationalized as gaze direction towards the play activity, mother, and 'distracted' (indicated by looking away from play or mother). Mothers completed stress, depression, anxiety, and attachment questionnaires. HG exposed infants attended for significantly less time during play with a book or soft toy compared to controls. Maternal stress, depression, anxiety, and attachment did not differ in HG mothers and controls. Infant ability to attend to the toy, book, mother or being distracted did not relate to maternal postnatal attachment, or mental health. These results suggest that the prenatal environment, especially exposure to HG might be associated with reduced infant attention abilities independent of maternal postnatal health.

Poor adult health has consistently been associated with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The process is not fully understood but is likely to involve a complex interaction of biological and psychosocial factors. Early life stress can affect the developing brain resulting in long-term hyper-responses to stress and raised inflammatory biomarkers. Women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) frequently report ACEs and also self-sacrificial behaviours whereby they repress their own needs and emotions to preserve personal relationships. This behavioural profile (termed self-silencing) may develop following ACEs but has not previously been considered in the context of FMS. This study examined whether self-silencing mediates the link between ACEs and FMS symptoms. Women with (N = 539) and without (N = 184) an FMS diagnosis completed measures of Silencing-the-Self, health symptoms and ACEs. Number of ACEs and symptom levels were significantly associated in both groups. One aspect of self-silencing, care and self-sacrifice (putting others needs before your own) mediated the association between ACEs and symptoms in the FMS group only. Externalised self-perception (judging oneself according to perceived external standards) was negatively associated with symptoms but presented no mediating effects. Results present preliminary new information to explain the association between ACEs and FMS. Recognition of the factors which underlie symptomology is important in understanding the condition and supporting patients.

BACKGROUND: Frontline health care workers are particularly vulnerable to burnout and diminished well-being as they endure COVID-19 pandemic-related stressors. While physicians and nurses are the public face of those experiencing burnout in hospitals, these stressors also affect low-wage workers such as food and housekeeping/janitorial service workers whose roles largely remain "invisible" when conceptualizing the essential health workforce and understanding their needs. This study sought to understand the experiences of frontline essential workers to better support them and prevent burnout. METHODS: Using a semi-structured interview guide, we conducted 20 in-depth qualitative interviews with workers in three U.S. states. Thematic content analysis was conducted to code and analyze interviews. RESULTS: Workers had an average of 5.8 years in their jobs, which included food services, housekeeping/janitorial, and patient transport roles. Analysis revealed four prominent stressors contributing to worker burnout: changes in duties and staff shortages, fear of contracting or transmitting COVID-19, desire for recognition of their job-related risk, and unclear communication on safety precautions and resources. Protective factors included paid time-off, mental health supports, sense of workplace pride, and self-coping strategies. CONCLUSION/APPLICATION TO PRACTICE: As health systems continue to grapple with care delivery in the context of COVID-19, identifying best practices to support all workers and prevent burnout is vital to the functioning and safety of hospitals. Further consideration is warranted to create policies and multipronged interventions to meet workers' tangible needs while shifting the culture, so all members of the health workforce are seen and valued.

Abstract Background Obesity and overweight in childhood can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease throughout live. Objectives This study provides an update of a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCT) published in 2014, to assess the effects of physical activity interventions on preventing cardiovascular risk factors in childhood. Methods This update combines data from the previous search with new data obtained from June 2013 to June 2020. Searches were performed on PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane CENTRAL. The RCTs enrolled used interventions with physical activity longer than six months in school children aged 6-12 years, and evaluated body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Data analysis was performed using a random-effects model and a P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 28,603 articles were retrieved, and 17 RCTs (11,952 subjects) were included. Physical activity interventions were associated with reduction in SBP [−2.11mmHg (95%CI −3.67, −0.54), I243%], DBP [−2.08mmHg (95%CI −3.68, −0,49), I265%] and TG [-0.08mmol/L (95% CI -0.13, -0.03), I20%], and increase in TC [0.17mmol/L (95%CI 0.04, 0.30), I20%]. However, the interventions were not associated with reductions in BMI [−0.03 kg/m2 (95%CI −0.17, 0.10), I20%]. Conclusion This update confirms and reinforces the beneficial effects of physical activity intervention in reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure and TG levels.

BACKGROUND: The study purpose examines diabetes self-care management practices among individuals diagnosed with diabetes with and without mental health stress. METHODS: Pooled cross-sectional data (2011-2016) from the Household Component of the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (HC-MEPS) were used. The sample consisted of individuals ages 25-85 years (n = 13,193; weighted n = 23,559,975). Dependent variables were engagement in moderate/vigorous physical exercise five times weekly, receiving dilated eye exams, foot checks, treating diabetes with diet modification or insulin injections, and eating fewer high fat/cholesterol foods. The independent variable was diabetes with and without mental health stress. The study controlled for predisposing, enabling, and need factors. RESULTS: Compared with individuals with diabetes without mental health stress, findings indicate individuals with diabetes and low or mild/moderate mental health stress were more likely to treat diabetes with diet modification and to restrict high fat/cholesterol food. Individuals with diabetes and severe mental health stress were more likely to restrict high fat/cholesterol. Additionally, individuals with mild/moderate to severe mental health stress were less likely to engage in diabetes care behavior. LIMITATIONS: Mental health stress is represented as a non-specific psychological distress index summary during the past 30 days and may not be an actual representation of overall distress in a person's life. There were no variables distinguishing diabetes type or severity. The study uses self-reported data and is cross-sectional. CONCLUSIONS: Mental health stress may contribute to individuals not engaging in self-management practices. It would be beneficial to incorporate psychosocial services for individuals with diabetes and mental health stress.

Background: The negative impact of COVID-19 on mental health has been reported by media throughout the world, although this role is not well-understood in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). We examined the reporting of mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh and initiatives undertaken to support mental health reported from the viewpoint of media. Methods: We reviewed articles published in 10 local newspapers, including seven Bangla and three English newspapers, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. News topics were identified through discussions among the team members, with searches across online newspapers and portals. Data extrapolated from newspapers were documented in an Excel spreadsheet. A mixed-method approach was used following a framework analysis for analyzing data. Recurring issues and commonly emerging topics were generated from the data. Descriptive statistics were applied for analyzing quantitative data. Results: Between March 2020 and March 2021, we have identified 201 reports on mental health issues including 45 reports (22.4%) focused on stress due to the associated financial crisis, unemployment and loneliness, 50 reports (24.9%) of 80 apparent suicides linked to family issues, disharmony in conjugal relationships, harassment, sexual violence, emotional breakdown, financial crisis, and stigma due to COVID-19.There were 77 reports (38.3%) concerning domestic violence during the pandemic. Twenty-nine reports (14.4%) referenced actions taken by different organizations to address mental health issues in response to the pandemic in Bangladesh. Conclusion: News coverage has the scope to highlight important issues that can emerge as a consequence of the COVID-pandemic, such as mental health, in a low resource setting. Capacity building of the media on the way to report mental health issues during emergency situations could be a useful strategy for more credible reporting on mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic for raising awareness of the public and policymakers about the negative consequences on mental health of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. Adopting policies to support essential mental health care and promoting the local organizations to take timely public health measures will be imperative for averting the negative consequences of mental health due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.

INTRODUCTION: Medical school is recognized as a stressful environment that may have a negative effect on a student's academic performance, health, and psychosocial well-being. This could further impact future health professionals' attitudes and compromise patients' care. This study aims to find out various sources of stress for medical and dental students to help prevent many future health problems in a student's life. METHODS: It was a cross-sectional study done in Universal College of Medical Sciences, Bhairhawa, Nepal, among undergraduate final year bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery and third and fourth year (phase I and phase II) dental students, using a questionnaire with Likert's scale. Data obtained was tabulated and analyzed using analysis of variance. RESULTS: Results showed that stress during exam 210 (92.9%) and preparation phase 200 (88.5%) stood out as the maximum stressors for our study group. The least stress-causing element was recorded as terms with seniors 45 (19.9%), adjustment with roommates 52 (23.01%), and competing with peers 69 (30.53%). Length of course 187 (82.74%), understanding the course 173 (76.55%), reading several textbooks 171 (75.66%), and work overload 165 (73.01%) amounted to significant stressors. CONCLUSIONS: Stress has a detrimental effect both on health as well as academic performance. The stressors at the campus should be identified and proper coping assistance should be provided to individual students. Systemic efforts are needed to address their concerns and make mental health care easily accessible to them. Counseling and awareness are recommended.

At the end of 2019, a disease was identified, COVID-19, caused by a new type of easy and fast spreading virus, which led to the beginning of a worldwide pandemic. One of the most exposed groups to the virus and its psychosocial consequences is the healthcare workers, due to their implication in caring for affected people. Health workers are exposed to a fast and unpredictable situation that requires more human resources and materials than usual, however, the lack of means on account to this situation entails an increased probability of suffering different consequences, including the burnout syndrome, to which, generally, this professionals are already vulnerable. In addition, quarantine is added as a measure to prevent the spread of the pandemic, which is another handicap for healthcare workers. Quarantine means these professionals are more likely to suffer the foreseeable psychological consequences in general population, specifically, it has been observed that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is more prevalent, because of the stress load of the situation experienced.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic with its subsequent mental health consequences has challenged the word view of most people. A genome typically of 26,000-32,000 bases long RNA has shut down the wheel of man made progress. The social isolation after the lock-down has not only led to economic difficulties but also adverse psychological reactions. The most common reaction is stress, anxiety and depression when faced with life-threatening circumstances. People have to deal with the imminent issue of death which is anxiety provoking in itself. This calls for dealing with the immediate mental health consequences with the aide of technological advancements as discussed in this write-up. A new inter-personal ethics need to emerge which is scientifically correct and in-line with age old values.

Personal stress is a prevalent problem in a connected world. For salespeople, demands of a connected workplace have largely eliminated boundaries between personal and work life, allowing stress from personal issues to spill over into their work. Thus, problems of health, relationships, and finances are no longer "left at home" for salespeople. Rather, a less central workplace model (e.g., remote workplaces and mobile platforms) and 24/7 work expectations expand the workplace, which comingles personal and work demands. Utilizing a sample of 331 salespeople, we study personal stressors that cross boundaries into the workplace and find that they play a critical role in the formation of burnout across its dimensions, which leads to reduced salesperson performance. Our research contributes to the sales literature by investigating individual personal stressors via Job Demands and Conservation of Resources theories and offers insights for managers of salespeople that face both personal and work stress.

@#Introduction: Doctors are known to deal with high occupational stress, causing increased risk of depression, anxiety and stress.Nevertheless, the prevalence and associatedfactors of depression, anxiety and stress among registered doctorsworking in 24 public hospitals in Sabah, Malaysia are not known yet. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using convenient sampling from September-October 2018. The data of 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) was collected via online link anonymously. Results: Among 314 doctors, majority of them were females (62.1%), mean age 29 (SD 2.72), non-Sabahan (82.8%), Malays (46.8%), not married (78.3%) and medical officers (93.6%). Prevalence of severe/extremely severe anxiety symptoms was 27.4%,depression (22.9%) and stress (18.5%). Doctors perceiving themselves to be depressed, anxious and/or stressed were more likely to develop the corresponding symptoms. Females and Chinese were twice more likely to report anxiety symptoms. Being married had protective effect against depressive symptoms, while working in same hospital for longer time had a significant but weak protective effect against anxiety and stress symptoms. Conclusions: Mental health issue among doctors is substantial and need to be addressed effectively for the benefit of their life, patients and country.

OBJECTIVES: The present study examined age differences among older adults in the daily co-occurrence of affect and its potential role in buffering the negative effects of health stressors. DESIGN: Participants were from the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study and included 249 young-old adults (age = 60-79 years, M = 71.6) and 64 old-old adults (age = 80-89, M = 82.9) who completed questionnaires assessing stressors, physical health symptoms, and positive and negative affect for eight consecutive days. RESULTS: An independent samples t-test showed young-old and old-old adults did not significantly differ in their mean levels of daily co-occurrence of affect. The between-person relationships among stressors, health and daily co-occurrence of affect revealed that neither stressors nor health were significantly related to daily co-occurrence of affect. However, results from a multilevel model revealed a three-way cross-level interaction (health stressor × age group × co-occurrence of affect) where old-old adults with higher levels of co-occurrence of affect were less emotionally reactive to health stressors than young-old adults. CONCLUSION: These findings provide support for the assertion that co-occurrence of affect functions in an adaptive capacity and highlight the importance of examining domain-specific stressors.

RESUMO

Perceived racism contributes to persistent health stress leading to health disparities. African American/Black persons (BPs) believe subtle, rather than overt, interpersonal racism is increasing. Sue and colleagues describe interpersonal racism as racial microaggressions: "routine" marginalizing indignities by White persons (WPs) toward BPs that contribute to health stress. In this narrative, exploratory study, Black adults (n = 10) were asked about specific racial microaggressions; they all experienced multiple types. Categorical and narrative analysis captured interpretations, strategies, and health stress attributions. Six iconic narratives contextualized health stress responses. Diverse mental and physical symptoms were attributed to racial microaggressions. Few strategies in response had positive outcomes. Future research includes development of coping strategies for BPs in these interactions, exploration of WPs awareness of their behaviors, and preventing racial microaggressions in health encounters that exacerbate health disparities.

PURPOSE: The current study adapted two workplace substance abuse prevention programs and tested a conceptual model of workplace training effects on help seeking and alcohol consumption. DESIGN: Questionnaires were collected 1 month before, 1 month after, and 6 months within a cluster randomized field experiment. SETTING: Texas small businesses in construction, transportation, and service industries. SUBJECTS: A total of 1510 employees from 45 businesses were randomly assigned to receive no training or one of the interventions. INTERVENTION: The interventions were 4-hour on-the-job classroom trainings that encouraged healthy lifestyles and seeking professional help (e.g., from the Employee Assistance Program [EAP]). The Team Awareness Program focused on peer referral and team building. The Choices in Health Promotion Program delivered various health topics based on a needs assessment. MEASURES: Questionnaires measured help-seeking attitudes and behavior, frequency of drinking alcohol, and job-related incidents. ANALYSIS: Mixed-model repeated-measures analyses of covariance were computed. RESULTS: Relative to the control group, training was associated with significantly greater reductions in drinking frequency, willingness to seek help, and seeking help from the EAP. After including help-seeking attitudes as a covariate, the correlation between training and help seeking becomes nonsignificant. Help-seeking behavior was not correlated with drinking frequency. CONCLUSION: Training improved help-seeking attitudes and behaviors and decreased alcohol risks. The reductions in drinking alcohol were directly correlated with training and independent from help seeking.
