The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the generation of large quantities of medical waste and highlighted the importance of efficient waste management systems. One good example of this is rapid antigen tests, which contain valuable resources, and which are usually incinerated after their use. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential of waste rapid antigen test cassettes (RATCs) as a resource for the preparation of sustainable flame-retardant plastics. Milled RATCs were compounded with different concentrations (10-30 wt.%) of aluminium diethylphosphinate (ADP) and injection moulded into test specimens. Prepared samples were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) ageing for varying durations and characterised by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, and vertical burning tests. FT-IR analysis revealed that RATCs are composed mainly of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS), which was further confirmed by suitable glass transition temperatures (Tg) determined by DSC and DMA. The addition of ADP resulted in progressive embrittlement of HIPS with increasing concentration, while flammability decreased significantly and reached V-1 classification at loading of 30 wt.%. UV ageing caused photo-oxidative degradation of HIPS, which resulted in decreased strain-at-break, while flammability was not affected.

High-impact practices (HIPs) are educational practices that foster student success. HIPs have not been widely used in cancer education and research despite the need for students to develop key transferable skills and cultivate social responsibility. Our study addresses this need by implementing four community-based learning HIPs within the context of cancer education and research. Each HIP was classified as having low, moderate, or high alignment with the traits of effective HIPs. Undergraduate science students participated in one to four HIPs as a Feedback Participant, General Volunteer, Student Leader, or Cancer Undergraduate Research and Education (CURES) Class Student. We then studied the effect of these HIPs on students' development of knowledge and skills; career interest and preparedness; and social responsibility. Results from self-reported questionnaires showed that HIPs increased students' cancer knowledge and developed their transferable and technical skills. Many students reported that these HIPs strongly impacted their career preparedness; positively influenced their interest in pursuing careers in health or biomedical sciences; and encouraged them to participate in community service activities. Thus, these findings provide new insights into the perceived benefits of HIPs in cancer education and research by undergraduate students.

Research in medicine is an indispensable tool to advance knowledge and improve patient care. This may be particularly true in the field of human reproduction as it is a relatively new field and treatment options are rapidly evolving. This is of particular importance in an emerging field like 'human reproduction', where treatment options evolve fast.The cornerstone of evidence-based knowledge, leading to evidence-based treatment decisions, is randomized controlled trials as they explore the benefits of new treatment approaches. The study design and performance are crucial and, if they are carried out correctly, solid conclusions can be drawn and be implemented in daily clinical routines. The dissemination of new findings throughout the scientific community occurs in the form of publications in scientific journals, and the importance of the journal is reflected in part by the impact factor. The peer review process before publication is fundamental in preventing flaws in the study design. Thus, readers of journals with a high impact factor usually rely on a thorough peer review process and therefore might not question the published data. However, even papers published in high-impact journals might not be free of flaws, so the aim of this paper is to encourage readers to be aware of this fact and critically read scientific papers as 'the devil lies in the details'.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to identify factors associated with multiple visits to emergency department (ED) services for mental health care in adolescents. METHODS: Electronic databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science and ProQuest Dissertations & Thesis Global) were searched for evidence that presented an association between risk factors or correlates of multiple visits to the emergency departmental for mental health care by 10-24 year olds. High impact use was defined as at least one return ED visit for mental health care. Primary studies of any quantitative design were included, with no exclusions based on language or country and all possible risk factors were considered. Data were extracted and synthesised using quantitative methods; frequencies of positive, negative and null associations were summarised for categories of potential risk factors. RESULTS: Sixty-five studies were included in the review. Most studies were from North America and reported a wide range of measures of high impact ED use, the most common being a binary indicator of multiple ED visits. Sex/gender and age were the most frequently reported risk factors. Measure of previous or concurrent access to mental health care was consistently positively associated with high impact use. Having private health insurance, compared with public or no insurance, was generally negatively associated with high impact use. Proxy measures of socioeconomic position (SEP) showed associations between lower SEP and more high impact use in a small number of studies. No other factors were consistently or uniformly associated with high impact use. CONCLUSIONS: The review identified a substantial evidence base but due to the variability in study design and measurement of both risk factors and outcomes, no consistent risk factors emerged. More research is needed, particularly outside North America, using robust methods and high quality routinely collected data.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes substantial mortality and morbidity globally. Current treatments only alleviate symptoms and do not halt secondary injury progression. OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the neuroprotective potential of Acorus calamus Linn. (AC) in a Drosophila melanogaster model of high-impact TBI. METHODS: Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) of the Oregon R + strain were administered hydroalcoholic extracts of Acorus calamus Linn. (HAEAC) at concentrations of 25 and 50 µg/mL, 24 h and continuously for 72 h, respectively, following TBI induction. Mortality rate, locomotor function, neurotransmitter levels, and oxidative stress markers were assessed at 24 and 72 h post-injury as outcomemeasures. RESULTS: AC significantly reduced post-TBI mortality and improved locomotor function in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, AC increased acetylcholinesterase, gamma-aminobutyric acid, serotonin, and dopamine levels while reducing glutamate. It also boosted antioxidant activity (superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and catalase) and lowered markers of oxidative damage (malondialdehyde, nitrite). CONCLUSIONS: AC mitigated behavioral deficits, oxidative damage, and neurotransmitter imbalance in fruit flies after TBI. These findings indicate AC may be more effective than individual drugs for TBI therapy. Further research into its neuroprotective phytochemicals is warranted.

Learning communities (LCs) are a type of high-impact, collaborative educational practice where students cooperate with other students in two or more classes to improve learning. Additional criteria used for defining LCs vary across the literature and have focused on high school and undergraduate programs. Similar benefits may also be experienced in professional programs; however, before further studies can investigate and describe these benefits, the structure for LCs in the veterinary curriculum must first be defined. To accomplish this, a survey instrument was developed and distributed to veterinary students attending Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine during the 2019 to 2020 academic year. The survey focused on a number of criteria and included both qualitative and quantitative questions. Criteria included demographics, prior experiences, and structure of an ideal LC. Recurring themes in the qualitative responses were identified, reviewed, and categorized based on an established coding theme. Significant correlations included an association between respondents' opinions on the ideal number of people in a LC and prior participation in LCs; age and preference for LC focus; ideal number of LC members and LC focus; and gender identity and thoughts on LC diversity. Based on the survey results, the typical veterinary student would consider an ideal LC to (1) be selected by the students of the LC, (2) have faculty mentors, (3) have a focus on coursework with some social aspects, (4) have fewer than seven members, (5) be composed of friends, (6) meet both during and after class, and (7) be diverse.

Developing ultrahigh-strength fabric-based triboelectric nanogenerators for harvesting high-impact energy and sensing biomechanical signals is still a great challenge. Here, the constraints are addressed by design of a multistrand twisted triboelectric Kevlar (MTTK) yarn using conductive and non-conductive Kevlar fibers. Manufactured using a multistrand twisting process, the MTTK yarn offers superior tensile strength (372 MPa), compared to current triboelectric yarns. In addition, a self-powered impact sensing fabric patch (SP-ISFP) comprising signal acquisition, processing, communication circuit, and MTTK yarns is integrated. The SP-ISFP features withstanding impact (4 GPa) and a sensitivity and response time under the high impact condition (59.68 V GPa-1; 0.4 s). Furthermore, a multi-channel smart bulletproof vest is developed by the array of 36 SP-ISFPs, enabling the reconstruction of impact mapping and assessment of body injury location and levels by real-time data acquisition. Their potential to reduce body injuries, professional security, and construct a multi-point personal vital signs dynamic monitoring platform holds great promise.

BACKGROUND: Primary care is integral to the health system and population health. Primary care research is still in development and most academic departments lack effective research investments. High impact primary care research programs are needed to advance the field to ensure a robust primary care system for the future. The project objective was to understand key informants' views of structures, functions, and processes required to create a high impact research program in an academic primary care department. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative project with key informants from research programs in primary care. Participants included international research leaders in primary care (n = 10), department of family and community researchers (n = 37) and staff (n = 9) in an academic primary care department, other university leaders (n = 3) and members of the departmental executive leadership team (1 department; 25 members). Semi-structured interviews (n = 27), and focus groups (n = 6) were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis. We used a socioecological framework which described micro, meso, macro levels of influence. RESULTS: At the micro level despite barriers with respect to funding, protected time and lack of formal mentorship, personal motivation was a key factor. At the meso level, the organizational structure that promoted collaboration and a sense of connection emerged as a key factor. Specifically research leaders identified a research faculty development pipeline based on equity, diversity, inclusion, indigeneity, and accessibility principles with thematic areas of focus as key enablers. Lastly, at the macro level, an overarching culture and policies that promoted funding and primary care research was associated with high impact programs. CONCLUSION: The alignment/complementarity of micro, meso, and macro level factors influenced the creation of a high impact research department in primary care. High impact research in primary care is facilitated by the development of researchers through formalized and structured mentorship/sponsorship and a department culture that promote primary care research.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated whether food insecurity (US Adult Food Security Survey) was associated with chronic pain (≥ 3 months) and high-impact chronic pain (i.e. pain that limits work and life) among US adults. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis. SETTING: Nationally representative sample of non-institutionalised adults in the USA. PARTICIPANTS: 79 686 adults from the National Health Interview Survey (2019-2021). RESULTS: Marginal, low and very low food security were associated with increased prevalence odds of chronic pain (OR: 1·58 (95 % CI 1·44, 1·72), 2·28 (95 % CI 2·06, 2·52) and 3·37 (95 % CI 3·01, 3·78), respectively) and high-impact chronic pain (OR: 1·28 (95 % CI 1·14, 1·42), 1·55 (95 % CI 1·37, 1·75) and 1·90 (95 % CI 1·65, 2·18), respectively) in a dose-response fashion (P-trend < 0·0001 for both), adjusted for sociodemographic, socio-economic and clinically relevant factors. Participation in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and age modified the association between food insecurity and chronic pain. CONCLUSIONS: These findings illustrate the impact of socio-economic factors on chronic pain and suggest that food insecurity may be a social determinant of chronic pain. Further research is needed to better understand the complex relationship between food insecurity and chronic pain and to identify targets for interventions. Moreover, the consideration of food insecurity in the clinical assessment of pain and pain-related conditions among socio-economically disadvantaged adults may be warranted.

Chronic pain disproportionately affects middle-aged and older adults in the United States. Everyday discrimination is associated with worse pain outcomes and is more prevalent among adults from racial/ethnic minoritized groups. Yet, there is limited evidence on relationships between everyday discrimination and chronic pain among middle-aged and older adults, as well as how discrimination and racial/ethnic identity may interact to influence this relationship. We used the 2018 Health and Retirement study to evaluate associations between exposure to everyday discrimination and odds to experience any, severe, and high-impact chronic pain among 5,314 Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic White adults over the age of 50. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the main and interaction effects of everyday discrimination on the odds of chronic pain (any, severe, and high-impact) across racial/ethnic groups. Results showed that Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black middle-aged and older adults had a higher, unadjusted prevalence of severe and high-impact chronic pain and reported more exposure to everyday discrimination compared to non-Hispanic White middle-aged and older adults. In fully adjusted models, exposure to everyday discrimination predicted higher odds to experience each type of chronic pain. In addition, study findings showed that exposure to everyday discrimination significantly raised pain risk among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White, but not non-Hispanic Black, middle-aged, and older adults. Findings underscore the influential role of everyday discrimination on the chronic pain experiences of middle-aged and older adults, as well as differential effects across racial/ethnic groups. PERSPECTIVE: Using national data, we examined associations between discrimination and chronic pain among middle-aged and older adults, including interactions between discrimination and race/ethnicity. Exposure to discrimination predicted a higher chronic pain burden, overall. Differential effects within racial/ethnic groups underscored a need for more nuanced investigations into pain disparities among this population.

Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are some of the most common modern composite materials for interior and exterior design that combine natural waste wood properties and the molding possibility of a thermoplastic polymer binder. The addition of reinforcing elements, binding agents, pigments, and coatings, as well as changes to the microstructure and composition, can all affect the quality of WPCs for particular purposes. To improve the properties, hybrid composite panels of WPCs with 30 wt. % and 40 wt. % of wood content and reinforced with one or three metal grid layers were prepared sequentially by extrusion and hot pressure molding. The results show an average 20% higher moisture absorption for composites with higher wood content. A high impact test (HIT) revealed that the absorbed energy of deformation increased with the number of metal grid layers, regardless of the wood content, around two times for all samples before water immersion and around ten times after water absorption. Also, absorbed energy increases with raised wood content, which is most pronounced in three-metal-grid samples, from 21 J to 26 J (before swelling) and from 15 J to 24 J (after swelling). Flexural tests follow the trends observed by HIT, indicating around 65% higher strength for samples with three metal grid layers vs. samples without a metal grid before water immersion and around 80% higher strength for samples with three metal grid layers vs. samples without a grid after water absorption. The synthesis route, double reinforcing (wood and metal), applied methods of characterization, and optimization according to the obtained results provide a WPC with improved mechanical properties ready for an outdoor purpose.

In order to protect human health and the environment, several regulations have been introduced in recent years to reduce or even eliminate the use of some brominated flame retardants (BFRs) due to their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation. Dispersions of these BFRs in polymers are widely used for various applications. In this report, four different brominated molecules, decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDE), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and tris(tribromophenoxy)triazine (TTBPT), were dispersed in the solid matrix of an industrial polymer, high impact polystyrene (HIPS). The possibility of degradation of these BFRs within HIPS under UV-visible irradiation in ambient air was investigated. The degradation kinetics of DBDE and HBCDD were followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and high-resolution two-step laser mass spectrometry (L2MS). The thermal properties of the pristine and irradiated polymer matrix were monitored by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which showed that these properties were globally preserved. Volatile photoproducts from the degradation of DBDE, DBDPE and TTBPT were identified by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Under the chosen experimental conditions, BFRs underwent rapid degradation after a few seconds of irradiation, with conversions exceeding 50% for HIPS/DBDE and HIPS/HBCDD systems.

There is a high prevalence of chronic pain among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. Chronic life stressors have been shown to have detrimental consequences for myriad health conditions, including chronic pain. However, there is limited evidence on the types of chronic life stressors that affect middle-aged and older adults and how these stressors influence the chronic pain burden in this population. Moreover, the interaction between chronic life stressors and racial/ethnic identity remains poorly understood as it relates to chronic pain. The current analysis used the 2018 Health and Retirement Study to investigate relationships between chronic life stressors and odds to experience any chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain. Chronic life stressors were characterized, overall and by racial/ethnic identity, and the main and interaction effects were calculated to evaluate relationships between chronic life stressors, racial/ethnic identity, and odds of experiencing any chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain. Results indicate that in 2018, the most common chronic life stressor among middle-aged and older adults was dealing with their own health problems (68%), followed by dealing with the physical or emotional issues affecting a spouse or child (46%). Adjusted analyses showed that a higher total of chronic life stressors increased the odds of middle-aged and older adults experiencing any chronic pain and high-impact chronic pain. There were no significant interactions between the overall chronic life stress burden and racial/ethnic identity as a predictor of odds to experience any chronic pain or high-impact chronic pain, but significant interaction effects were found related to specific chronic life stressors. Findings underscore the significant impact of chronic life stressors on the chronic pain burden among middle-aged and older adults in the United States, which cut across racial/ethnic identity.

The COVID-19 pandemic underlined that communities are key in sharing trusted, timely and relevant information especially during a health emergency where the overabundance of information makes it difficult to make decisions to protect one's health. The WHO Hive project grew out of the desire to create a community-centered solution with the potential to change the way credible health information is shared, adapted, understood and used for health-related decision making before, during and after an epidemic or pandemic. The Hive online platform provides a safe space for knowledge-sharing, discussion, and collaboration, including access to timely scientific information through direct engagement with WHO subject matter experts, and the true innovation lies within the platform's ability to leverage the power of communities to crowdsource solutions to community concerns and needs. The platform is equipped with a set of synchronous and asynchronous features and tools to encourage coworking and facilitate cross-sectorial collaboration. The Hive seeks to leverage the expert communities to share resources and knowledge for epidemic and pandemic preparedness and provide an environment that is able to respond to the challenges faced in a complex information ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a common, debilitating, and feared symptom, including among cancer survivors. However, large-scale population-based evidence on pain and its impact in cancer survivors is limited. We quantified the prevalence of pain in community-dwelling people with and without cancer, and its relation to physical functioning, psychological distress, and quality of life (QoL). METHODS: Questionnaire data from participants in the 45 and Up Study (Wave 2, n = 122,398, 2012-2015, mean age = 60.8 years), an Australian population-based cohort study, were linked to cancer registration data to ascertain prior cancer diagnoses. Modified Poisson regression estimated age- and sex-adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) for bodily pain and pain sufficient to interfere with daily activities (high-impact pain) in people with versus without cancer, for 13 cancer types, overall and according to clinical, personal, and health characteristics. The relation of high-impact pain to physical and mental health outcomes was quantified in people with and without cancer. RESULTS: Overall, 34.9% (5,436/15,570) of cancer survivors and 31.3% (32,471/103,604) of participants without cancer reported bodily pain (PR = 1.07 [95% CI = 1.05-1.10]), and 15.9% (2,468/15,550) versus 13.1% (13,573/103,623), respectively, reported high-impact pain (PR = 1.13 [1.09-1.18]). Pain was greater with more recent cancer diagnosis, more advanced disease, and recent cancer treatment. High-impact pain varied by cancer type; compared to cancer-free participants, PRs were: 2.23 (1.71-2.90) for multiple myeloma; 1.87 (1.53-2.29) for lung cancer; 1.06 (0.98-1.16) for breast cancer; 1.05 (0.94-1.17) for colorectal cancer; 1.04 (0.96-1.13) for prostate cancer; and 1.02 (0.92-1.12) for melanoma. Regardless of cancer diagnosis, high-impact pain was strongly related to impaired physical functioning, psychological distress, and reduced QoL. CONCLUSIONS: Pain is common, interfering with daily life in around one-in-eight older community-dwelling participants. Pain was elevated overall in cancer survivors, particularly for certain cancer types, around diagnosis and treatment, and with advanced disease. However, pain was comparable to population levels for many common cancers, including breast, prostate and colorectal cancer, and melanoma.

The development of severe COVID-19, which is a complex multisystem disease, is thought to be associated with many genes whose action is modulated by numerous environmental and genetic factors. In this study, we focused on the ideas of the omnigenic model of heritability of complex traits, which assumes that a small number of core genes and a large pool of peripheral genes expressed in disease-relevant tissues contribute to the genetics of complex traits through interconnected networks. We hypothesized that primary immunodeficiency disease (PID) genes may be considered as core genes in severe COVID-19, and their functional partners (FPs) from protein-protein interaction networks may be considered as peripheral near-core genes. We used whole-exome sequencing data from patients aged ≤ 45 years with severe (n = 9) and non-severe COVID-19 (n = 11), and assessed the cumulative contribution of rare high-impact variants to disease severity. In patients with severe COVID-19, an excess of rare high-impact variants was observed at the whole-exome level, but maximal association signals were detected for PID + FP gene subsets among the genes intolerant to LoF variants, haploinsufficient and essential. Our exploratory study may serve as a model for new directions in the research of host genetics in severe COVID-19.

Background: Although female representation has been growing among physicians, women continue to be underrepresented in neurology, particularly regarding academic research in authorship and leadership. Analyzing recent trends in high-impact neurology journals highlights the underrepresentation of women and helps explore barriers to female representation in academic neurology. Methods and results: Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for 2021 was used to screen neurology journals for selection. The first 15 journals with the highest impact factors (JIF) were included. 15,404 total articles in neurology were examined for gender distribution of editorial staff and authorship with the highest total citations from January 1st, 2018 to October 31st, 2021. Gender was classified using biographical information from public and personal media sources. Genderize.io was used in cases of ambiguity, predicting gender at probability of ≥95%. Our data demonstrated that these journals only had 13% female editor-in-chiefs and 35% female editorial staff. The data further demonstrated that females accounted for 39% of first authors and 26% for last authors. During the four years examined males continued to account for the vast majority of both first and last authors for publications accepted and journal editorial staff members. Conclusion: Women are significantly under-represented in the field of neurological research in leadership positions as editor-in-chiefs, editorial board members as well as first or senior authors in top neurology medical journals. With continued underrepresentation of women occupying leading publishing roles, parity with men is still a work in progress. Additional work is needed to identify and address barriers to academic advancement for women physicians in academic neurology.

BACKGROUND: High-Impact Practices (HIPs) are educational practices that have been shown to increase rates of student retention, engagement, and persistence to graduation which help them to become high achievers and lifelong learners. Universities strongly encourage faculty members to incorporate one or more of these HIPs in order to improve active learning among students. Students are met with a variety of experiences that are not entirely of their choice, including expectations for academic performance, interactions with faculty, staff, and peers, and extracurricular activities that may or may not match their expectations and skills. Higher retention and high-grade achievement rates are attributed to HIPs. The mechanism by which HIPs improve retention is poorly understood. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: There are numerous analyses of the objectives particular to undergraduate medical education in recent years. There have been proposed three major target categories. Undergraduate medical education has been positioned within a liberal education framework, where the main objective is to equip students with the critical thinking abilities, broad general education, and subject-specific knowledge they will need to be able to effectively problem-solve, adapt to new roles, and apply public health thinking and practices to a variety of situations. We tried to incorporate HIPs in a medical curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine, Northern Border University, by giving them topics that can be used to create public awareness about the selected objectives which may help the community greatly. METHODOLOGY: Students were asked to make posters or videos on the topics and were asked to write reflections about their experience and give feedback to the coordinators for improvements and to make these HIPs better so that they can be included uniformly in the other courses as well. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Based on results from a random sample of undergraduate students, we draw the conclusion that HIPs are correlated with engagement, which is the alignment of the student's critical thinking and ability to work in effective teams, group projects, learning communities, and sequence courses. HIPs have an impact on involvement among students across the world. HIPs are effective to the extent that they engage pupils, encouraging a greater commitment, which is one way to understand their success.

BACKGROUND: To deal with emergency department (ED) crowding, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) established a task force to develop a list of low-cost, high-impact solutions. In this study, we report on the trend in the adoption rate of ACEP-recommended ED crowding interventions by US hospitals. METHODS: We analyzed the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey data from 2007 to 2020 (N = 3874 hospitals). The primary outcome was whether a hospital adopted each of the ACEP-recommended interventions, which were grouped into three overlapping categories: technology-based, flow modifications, and physical-based (e.g., changing ED layout). RESULTS: On average, the most frequently adopted intervention was bedside registration (85.1%) and the least frequently adopted intervention was kiosk check-in (8.3%). The adoption of ED crowding interventions increased significantly between 2007 and 2020, except for expanding ED treatment space which declined by 45.0% from 30.3% in 2007 to 15.7% in 2020. The largest adoption rate increase occurred in having a separate operating room for ED cases with a 188.5% increase in adoption rate followed by radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracking (151.2%), and kiosk check-in (144.2%). CONCLUSIONS: The adoption rate of ED crowding interventions by hospitals has risen, however most effective ED crowding interventions are still underutilized. The trends for each intervention did not always increase linearly, with certain periods showing greater fluctuations in adoption rate. Hospitals tend to implement technology-based interventions, compared to physical-based interventions and flow modification interventions.

4-Methylphenol is a food-related odor-active volatile with a high recognition factor, due to its horse stable-like, fecal odor quality. Its ambivalent hedonic impact as key aroma compound, malodor, and semiochemical has spurred the search for its cognate, chemosensory odorant receptors across species. A human odorant receptor for the highly characteristic 4-methylphenol has been elusive. Here, we identified and characterized human receptor OR9Q2 to be tuned to purified 4-methylphenol, but not to its contaminant isomer 3-methylphenol. This highly selective function of OR9Q2 complements an exclusive phenol detection gap in the ancient, most broadly tuned human odorant receptor OR2W1. Moreover, a 4-methylphenol function is evolutionary conserved in phylogenetically related OR9Q2 orthologs from chimpanzee, mouse, and cow. Notably, the cow receptor outperformed human OR9Q2 10-fold in signal strength, consonant with previous reports of 4-methylphenol as a bovine pheromone. Our results suggest OR9Q2 as best sensor for the key food odorant, malodor, and semiochemical 4-methylphenol.
