RESUMO

The human milk fat globule membrane (hMFGM) and Lactobacillus modulate the infant's gut and benefit health. Hence, the current study assesses the probiotic potential of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (MRK3), Limosilactobacillus ferementum (MK1) isolated from infant feces, and its interaction with hMFGM during conditions mimicking infant digestive tract. Both strains showed high tolerance to gastrointestinal conditions, cell surface hydrophobicity, and strong anti-pathogen activity against Staphylococcus aureus. During digestion, hMFGM significantly exhibited xanthine oxidase activity, membrane roughness, and surface topography. In the presence of hMFGM, survival of MRK3 was higher than MK1, and electron microscopic observation revealed successful entrapment of MRK3 in the membrane matrix throughout digestion. Interestingly, probiotic-membrane matrix interaction showed significant synergy to alleviate oxidative stress and damage induced by cell-free supernatant of Escherichia coli in Caco-2 cells. Our results show that a probiotic-encapsulated membrane matrix potentially opens the functional infant formula development pathway.

Introdução: os primeiros anos de vida são essenciais para o crescimento e o desenvolvimento. A criança já nasce com a preferência pelo sabor doce, e ao consumir preparações açucaradas, propicia--se uma alimentação de baixa qualidade nutricional. O objetivo do estudo é descrever a ingestão de alimentos que contenham açúcar por crianças com dificuldades alimentares menores de 2 anos atendidas em um centro especializado. Material e métodos: trata-se de um estudo observacional retrospectivo, com dados obtidos do prontuário de crianças de ambos os sexos, atendidas no Centro de Excelência em Nutrição e Dificuldades Alimentares (CENDA), localizado no município de São Paulo. Dentre os alimentos consumidos foram selecionados aqueles que continham açúcar de adição em sua composição. Para categorizar os alimentos foi usada a classificação da What We Eat in America (WWEIA). Resultados: participaram do estudo 31 crianças com dificuldades alimentares, 77,4% apresentaram consumo de pelo menos um alimento contendo açúcar. Os alimentos mais consumidos foram biscoitos e brownies, bolos e tortas, milk-shakes e outras bebidas lácteas. Discussões e Conclusão: a fase de alimentação complementar pode se tornar um grande desafio para os pais e cuidadores, a mesma foi o ponto de partida para a maioria das crianças com dificuldade alimentares. O aprendizado do comer é um processo complexo que exige aquisição de habilidades na oferta de alimentos adequados e variados, contudo, o contexto se torna favorável com as práticas inadequadas, sendo uma delas a permissão do consumo de alimentos e produtos adoçados pelas mesmas.


Introduction: the first years of life are essential for growth and development. Children are born with a preference for sweet tastes, and through sugary consumption, they are provided with a diet of low nutritional quality. The objective of the study is to describe the intake of foods containing sugar by children with eating difficulties under 2 years of age treated in a specialized center. Material and methods: this is a retrospective observational study, with data obtained from the medical records of children of both sexes, attended at the Center for Excellence in Nutrition and Eating Difficulties (CENDA), located in the city of São Paulo. Among the foods consumed, those that contained added sugar in their composition were selected. To categorize foods, the What We Eat in America (WWEIA) classification was used. Results: 31 children with eating difficulties participated in the study, 77.4% consumed at least one food containing sugar. The most consumed foods were cookies and brownies, cakes and pies, milkshakes and other dairy drinks. Discussions and Conclusion: the complementary feeding phase can become a great challenge for parents and caregivers, as it was the starting point for the majority of children with eating difficulties. Learning to eat is a complex process that requires the acquisition of skills in offering adequate and varied foods. However, the context becomes favorable to inappropriate practices, one of which is allowing the consumption of sweetened foods and products, for the same reasons.

Los postbióticos fueron definidos en 2021 por la Asociación Científica Internacional de Probióticos y Prebióticos (ISAPP) como "una preparación de microorganismos inanimados y/o sus componentes celulares capaces de conferir un efecto benéfico al hospedador". El campo de los postbióticos es un área nueva dentro de la familia de los bióticos; se han desarrollado ya numerosos productos con aplicaciones clínicas, como la estimulación inmunológica, el manejo de diarreas en niños y adultos, el abordaje del intestino irritable, además de tres fórmulas infantiles. En particular, las fórmulas infantiles con postbióticos obtenidos a partir de la fermentación de la leche con Bifidobacterium breve C50 y Streptococcus thermophilus O65, y sus metabolitos, incluido el oligosacárido 3'-GL, han demostrado seguridad y contribución al desarrollo de la microbiota intestinal y el sistema inmune asociado al intestino. Estas modificaciones contribuyen a la prevención y el manejo de los trastornos funcionales digestivos del lactante.


Postbiotics were defined in 2021 by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) as a "preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their cellular components that confers a health benefit to the host." The field of postbiotics is a new area within the biotics family; numerous products have already been developed for clinical applications, such as immune stimulation, the management of diarrhea in children and adults, the management of irritable bowel syndrome, and 3 infant formulas. In particular, infant formulas with postbiotics obtained from milk fermented with Bifidobacterium breve C50 and Streptococcus thermophilus O65 ­and their metabolites­, including the oligosaccharide 3'-GL, have demonstrated to be safe and to contribute to the development of the gut microbiota and the gutassociated immune system. These modifications help to prevent and manage functional gastrointestinal disorders in infants.

This study analyzed the factors influencing childcare preference and the relationship between childcare preference and childcare service demand scale, using data collected from a questionnaire survey of 3,921 parents of infants and toddlers in Chongqing, China. The results indicate that parents with higher incomes, higher education levels, older ages, multiple infants, and dual-career living in urban areas have a stronger preference for childcare. In the shared or grandparent care model, the childcare preference is not obvious. Parents of infants tend to choose childcare institutions that provide reception services, early education, and convenience services. Higher quality environmental facilities tend to reduce the preference of parents for childcare.

Social expectations play a crucial role in shaping dietary practices among women and children. However, despite significant attention to promoting social and behavioral change in nutrition-focused programs and research, the influence of social norms on women's agency in enhancing nutrition practices is often overlooked. In this perspective, we advocate for a paradigm shift by incorporating a "norms aware" approach. This underscores the importance of recognizing, measuring, and addressing the societal constraints and barriers that women and children encounter in their journey to improved nutrition. Drawing on insights from the United States Agency for International Development-funded Kulawa project in Niger, we highlight the implications of using social norms diagnosis tools to understand the contextual dynamics within child-feeding practices, informing intervention design, and targeted populations. Integrating a norms perspective into nutrition programming and research does not require an overhaul, but rather a nuanced application of understanding of contextual drivers, such as social norms and agency, that have been underemphasized. We delve into the role of the socio-ecologic system, underscore the importance of addressing power imbalances related to gender and social hierarchy, and emphasize that programs targeting norms should aim for community rather than individual-level change. We provide guidance for programs and research integrating a norms perspective, as well as examples of how tools, such as the Social Norms Exploration Tool and Social Norms Analysis Plot framework, can be applied to identify and prioritize social norms, facilitating the design of "norms aware" programs. Additionally, we highlight the critical role of community engagement and discuss the value of using qualitative and quantitative approaches to document the process and outcomes of social norms research, program design, and implementation. When we recognize the role of social norms in nutrition as a missing ingredient in nutrition research, programming, and social and behavior change strategies, we create opportunities for more effective and contextually relevant research and interventions that address the complexities of enhancing nutrition practices among women and children.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Early first dental visits (FDVs) are crucial for educating and informing parents about their children's oral health. The age for the FDV is dependent on several factors and data regarding the same is unavailable in Goa state. The aim of the study was to determine the age, purpose, and parental perception with regard to the FDV of children in Goa State. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry for children reporting for their FDV. Data for the study was recorded from validated and pilot-tested questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using the STATA (version 17; StataCorp LLC, College Station, TX) software. Categorical variables were summarized using frequencies and percentages. Continuous variables were summarized using means and standard deviations. RESULTS: A total of 544 children were included in the study. The mean age of the FDV was 7.15 ± 2.98 years. Out of the total, 257 (47.24%) children reported with pain. The absence of dental problems was the reason why 485 (89.01%) children and their parents had not visited earlier. Most parents perceived the FDV to be important but were unaware of the ideal age for the same. CONCLUSIONS: Children in Goa state have delayed FDVs. Although parents recognized the importance of early dental visits and oral health, their knowledge regarding the recommended age was found to be deficient.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the use of smartphones at mealtimes by children in fast food restaurants in the city of Barcelona and to assess the variables associated with this use. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was carried out. Data from 1616 children of estimated ages between 4 to 10 years were collected in fast-food restaurants in the ten districts of Barcelona between October 2021 and July 2022. The percentage of smartphone use, overall and according to covariates, were calculated. Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests, and crude and adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance, were carried out to assess the association between use and covariates. RESULTS: Direct observation revealed that in 28.1% of meals with children at fast food restaurants, children used smartphones. Smartphone use was significantly higher in older children if their caregivers were younger than 30 years and when there was no caregiver-child interaction. In the adjusted model, higher patterns of smartphone use were associated with older children (aPR [95% CI]: 1.36[1.20-1.55]) and younger parents (aPR [95% CI]: 1.38[1.09-1.73]). CONCLUSIONS: Almost one in three meals with children at fast-food restaurants in Barcelona involves smartphone use. This finding underlines the importance of raising awareness of responsible screen use and promoting healthier environments for children at mealtimes.

The analysis of vitamin B12 in infant formulas typically requires the use of cyanide during sample preparation to convert the unstable vitamers (hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin) to cyanocobalamin, the most stable form of vitamin B12. To eliminate the risk to laboratory analysts in handling cyanide, alternative strategies are preferred for the analysis of vitamin B12. This research demonstrates the use of cobalamin-derived α-ribazole (a nucleoside moiety of vitamin B12) to determine total vitamin B12 content. Infant formula samples underwent protein denaturation and sugar removal with subsequent acidic hydrolysis and dephosphorylation employed to release α-ribazole, which was isolated by boronate affinity chromatography then analysed by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. The method was validated using bovine- and ovine milk-based infant formula samples. The newly developed method was linear over the range of 0.65-6.48 ng mL-1 with repeatability of 3.78-5.47% relative standard deviation (RSDr, n = 10) and an intermediate precision of 3.59-10.0% RSDiR (n = 10). The limits of detection and quantitation (LOD and LOQ) were 0.4 and 1.2 µg 100 g-1 of dry weight, respectively. Accuracy was 68.9-76.4% and 68.7-80.0% at 50 and 150% of typical B12 concentrations in infant formula, respectively. The validated method was applied to eleven infant formulas and no statistical difference (p = 0.45, α = 0.05) was found when comparing with the results obtained using the AOAC Official Method 2014.02 high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection that requires the use of cyanide. These results indicate that the newly validated method is not only reliable but also offers a safer alternative for routine vitamin B12 determination in infant formula while maintaining high accuracy and precision.

BACKGROUND: In February 2022, an infant formula recall and closing of a major manufacturing center exacerbated a nationwide shortage initiated by COVID-19-related supply chain disruptions. The effects were far-reaching, impacting families and healthcare providers across the US. METHODS: A 19-item web survey was developed to better understand how the infant formula shortage impacted healthcare provider practices, resources needed and those already used, and patient health, including malnutrition. Subjective data on providers' experience were also collected. RESULTS: Two hundred forty-one providers responded, primarily registered dietitians (94%) practicing in inpatient/academic hospitals in urban and metropolitan areas. Practice adjustments included increases in patient education (100%), communication with pharmacies/durable medical equipment companies (65%), and visit durations (28%). Feeding adjustments by caregivers included new infant formula (99%), toddler (55%) or homemade (23%) formula, cow's milk (46%) or milk alternatives (32%), formula dilution (41%), and early food introduction (14%). Providers indicated an increase in malnutrition (33%), related diagnoses (including failure to thrive [31%] and deceleration in z score [27%]), and associated symptoms. Of the providers who reported malnutrition and related diagnoses, 93% also reported caregiver feeding practices that are generally not recommended. CONCLUSION: Providers made practice adjustments to mitigate the consequences associated with formula unavailability and misuse yet saw an increase in malnutrition and related diagnoses or symptoms. Subjectively, providers reported frustration that greater workloads did not result in improved outcomes, contributing to burnout. These data underscore the essentiality of supporting healthcare providers as they guide families in safe infant feeding practices.

Infant cereals are typically the first foods introduced as complementary foods. Cereals used to elaborate complementary foods, such as wheat, maize and rice, are susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. Among mycotoxins, fumonisins have been epidemiologically associated, in humans, with oesophageal cancer, neural tube defects and stunting. Fumonisins have been found in maize and wheat grains in Argentina. In the present study, a survey was conducted to determine their occurrence in 82 wheat-based and multicereal-based infant cereal items collected from retail stores in Rio Cuarto, Argentina, using HPLC-MS. Of these samples, 84% showed FBs contamination with levels ranging from 0.05 to 992 µg/kg). Although FB1 was the most prevalent fumonisin, FB2 was found at higher levels. Most samples had levels below the limit of 200 µg/kg set for Argentinean cereal products for children. The outcome of this survey provides information on the naturally presence of fumonisin in infant cereal intended for children in Argentina, which can be helpful to consider relevant monitoring programmes.

Background: Extubation failure and its associated complications are not uncommon after pediatric cardiac surgery, especially in neonates and young infants. We aimed to identify the frequency, etiologies, and clinical characteristics associated with extubation failure after cardiac surgery in neonates and young infants. Methods: We conducted a single center prospective observational study of patients ≤180 days undergoing cardiac surgery between June 2022 and May 2023 with at least one extubation attempt. Patients who failed extubation, defined as reintubation within 72 h of first extubation attempt, were compared with patients extubated successfully using χ2, Fisher exact, or Wilcoxon rank-sum tests as appropriate. Results: We prospectively enrolled 132 patients who met inclusion criteria, of which 11 (8.3%) failed extubation. Median time to reintubation was 25.5 h (range 0.4-55.8). Extubation failures occurring within 12 h (n = 4) were attributed to upper airway obstruction or apnea, whereas extubation failures occurring between 12 and 72 h (n = 7) were more likely to be due to intrinsic lung disease or cardiac dysfunction. Underlying genetic anomalies, greater weight relative to baseline at extubation, or receiving positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) > 5 cmH2O at extubation were significantly associated with extubation failure. Conclusions: In this study of neonates and young infants recovering from cardiac surgery, etiologies of early versus later extubation failure involved different pathophysiology. We also identified weight relative to baseline and PEEP at extubation as possible modifiable targets for future investigations of extubation failure in this patient population.

Background: The good qualities of breastfeeding are well known. The aim of this study was to closely examine the impact of specific maternal, prenatal, obstetric, and early neonatal factors on the success of breastfeeding. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Kuopio Birth Cohort study and analyzed 2,521 online questionnaires, which were answered by women 1 year after giving birth. Breastfeeding variables were divided into successful breastfeeding (breastfeeding exclusively with one's own breast milk ≥4 months or breastfeeding with formula ≥6 months) and poor breastfeeding (breastfeeding exclusively with one's own milk <4 months and duration of all breastfeeding <6 months) for univariate and multivariable analyses. Results: In this study, 97.8% (N = 2,466) reported breastfeeding their newborns for ≥1 postnatal week, and 75.2% (N = 1,896) breastfed newborns for ≥6 months. The rate of breastfeeding for ≥6 months increased from 71.3% to 84.7% between 2013 and 2020. In the multivariable analysis, poor breastfeeding success was associated most significantly with smoking during pregnancy (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 4.64; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.75-7.81), twin pregnancy (aOR 4.13; 95% CI: 2.10-8.15), maternal obesity (body mass index > 35) (aOR 3.27; 95% CI: 2.15-4.99), fear of childbirth (aOR 2.80; 95% CI: 1.89-4.13), and birth during the period of 2013-2014 (aOR 2.94; 95% CI: 2.08-4.14) or 2015-2016 (aOR 2.62; 95% CI: 1.85-3.70). Other significant factors related to poor success were younger maternal age, nonmarried family relationships, passive or quitting smoking before or in the first trimester, any hypertensive disorder during pregnancy, birth by nonelective cesarean, and lowest or highest quartiles of birth weight. Conclusions: Mother's fear of childbirth is strongly associated with the poor breastfeeding success even after controlling for mode of birth.

BACKGROUND: Limited data on the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during pregnancy on newborn outcomes are available. This study aimed to characterize and compare the clinical outcomes of newborns from women with and without the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during late pregnancy. METHOD: This was a retrospective cohort study of women who were either infected or not infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus during late pregnancy. The neonatal complications associated with COVID-19-positive pregnant women were investigated and analyzed. RESULTS: Among 2063 pregnant women over 28 weeks of gestation, 1.2%, 3.3%, and 18.7% of patients with multiple pregnancies, abnormal fetal positions, and lack of maternal or neonatal follow-up data, respectively, were excluded. Patients who were COVID-19-negative (60.6%) and -positive (16.2%) remained for further analysis. SARS-CoV-2 infection was significantly associated with higher SARS-CoV-2 infection rates in newborns (0% vs. 1.49%, P < 0.01) and longer duration of hospital stay (6.39 ± 2.2 vs. 4.92 ± 1.6, P < 0.01). However, comparing neonatal complications, including Apgar score, preterm birth, low birth weight, cesarean section rate, newborn hearing, neonatal congenital heart defects, and height and weight compliance rate of 6-month-old children, between non-infected and infected participants did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 infection in late pregnancy has no significant impact on neonatal outcomes. After six months of follow-up of the neonates, we observed that SARS-CoV-2 infection in the third trimester of pregnancy did not affect their growth and development. Hopefully, these findings will guide management strategies and clinical practice.

Introduction: Early intervention and parental education for preemies are limited in some low-income countries. Thus, this study aimed to assess whether daily tummy time (TT) associated with usual care (UC) enhances motor and cognitive development in preemies from low-income countries. The main and secondary aim was to assess prone head elevation (PHE) and motor and cognitive functions, respectively. Methods: Thirty-one preemies with a mean gestational age at birth of 33.3 ± 1.6 weeks and weighing <2,500 g were included and 18 completed all assessments. Parents from the TT group were asked to perform TT with their preemies for at least 20 min during daily activities and playtime. Motor and cognitive functions were assessed by a blinded examiner using the motor and cognitive composite scores of Bayley-III after two and four months of corrected age. PHE was given by the angle from the tragus of the ear to the supporting surface of the infant; measurements were obtained using the Kinovea® software at baseline, after two, three, and four months of corrected age. Results: The Bayley-III motor composite score of the TT group was higher than the UC group after two and four months of corrected age. The PHE angle increased over time but did not differ between groups. Discussion: Nevertheless, TT expanded the perspective of preemies to explore their bodies and environment, favoring the stimuli for motor and cognitive patterns. The loss of participants (31%) was one of the limitations of the study, illustrating the challenge of providing continued early interventions to preemies from low-income countries. In this sense, TT practice is a home intervention that may improve motor and cognitive function of preemies immediately after hospital discharge.

Introduction: Donor human milk (DHM) is recommended as the second-best alternative form of supplementation when a mother is unable to breastfeed directly. However, little is known about the experience of mothers and families in the communities regarding accessing and donating expressed breastmilk in Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the experience related to donor human milk in the society in Indonesia. Method: A search was conducted through six main online news portals. The keywords used included "donor human milk," "expressed breastmilk," and "wet nursing" in the Indonesian language, Bahasa Indonesia. A total of 107 articles were found, but only 20 articles were included for analysis using a qualitative media content analysis approach. Results: In the study, the following five themes were identified: (1) the whys and wherefores of donor human milk, (2) national and religious-based regulations, (3) recommendations from authorized organizations, healthcare professionals, and Islamic scholars, (4) the negative impact from the lack of national regulations, and (5) contradictory feelings among mothers. Conclusion: With the lack of detailed information on how to access or donate expressed human milk and the absence of a human milk bank in place, informal human milk sharing is inevitably occurring in the community. This has also raised concerns among authorized organizations, healthcare professionals, and Islamic scholars. Consequently, mothers, both donors and recipients, experienced negative impacts, which included contradictory feelings. Engaging with Islamic scholars and healthcare professionals to develop clear guidelines and regulations to enable mothers' and families' access and/or make contributions to DHM in a safe and accountable way is critical to prevent further problems from occurring in Indonesian society.

3-Monochloropropanediol fatty acid esters (3-MCPDE) and glycidyl esters (GE) are well-identified processing-induced chemical toxicants detected in infant formula and baby foods worldwide. We analysed the levels of 3-MCPDE and GE in infant formula and baby food products available in Saudi Arabia, followed by a dietary risk assessment for exposure to these contaminants in infants and young children from birth to 3 years. Eighty-five commercial infant formulas (n = 35) and baby foods (n = 50) available for consumption by infants and babies purchased from the Saudi market during 2022 were analysed for these contaminants using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. 3-MCPDE and GE were detected in 100 and 80% of the samples, with a mean concentration of 57 µg/kg (range: 2-285 µg/kg) and 30 µg/kg (range: not detected-217 µg/kg), respectively. The highest concentration was found in milk-based formula for infants 0-6 months (285 µg/kg) and the lowest was found in fruit purees (2 µg/kg). Preliminary exposure and risk assessment showed increased exposure to 3-MCPDE for infants exclusively fed infant formula with exposure declining with age due to the introduction of solid foods. GE exposure levels reached 0.8 µg/kg body weight per day, which declined over time with margin of exposure values below 25,000. These results indicate that the levels of 3-MCPDE and GE in infant formula may pose potential risks to infants exclusively fed formula; therefore, adopting EU regulations should reduce the presence of these processing contaminants in essential infant foods.

Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) proteins are receiving increased attention due to their reported benefits for human health, particularly in infant populations. Challenges exist in MFGM protein quantification due to their low quantities, complex chemistry, interactions with other matrix components, and the high matrix complexity. In this study, a subset of four MFGM proteins were selected as relevant targets for identification and quantification in an infant formula (IF) matrix: butyrophilin, mucin 1, xanthine dehydrogenase/oxidase, and perilipin 2. An analytical protocol for absolute quantification of these four MFGM proteins in IF was successfully developed and validated. Additionally, the feasibility to apply the method in selected MFGM ingredients was also demonstrated. The method demonstrated good performance; high accuracy and robustness, low LOQ and uncertainty, while controlling the matrix effect. This study represents a report of an analytical method to quantify selected MFGM proteins in IF.

OBJECTIVES: Allomaternal care (AMC) is suggested to be energetically beneficial to mothers and costly to allomothers. However, among primates, AMC is a heterogeneous phenomenon and its implications are less clear especially in female dispersal species. Here, we investigated infant care in a female dispersal species, Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus), to evaluate whether mothers were constrained by infant care and benefitted energetically from AMC, whether AMC was energetically costly for allomothers and how maternal experience was associated with AMC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected via instantaneous focal animal sampling between 2004 and 2005 for juvenile and adult females (N = 18) from two groups at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (440 h). We used generalized linear mixed models to determine how infant care during the first month after birth affected the time mothers and allomothers spent feeding, socializing, resting, and locomoting and how AMC varied. RESULTS: In the first month, infants spent 26% of their time with an allomother. We found no differences in mothers' overall activity before versus after birth, although mothers fed significantly more and rested less when without their infant. Allomothers fed and rested less when with an infant. AMC varied between 0.0% and 20.5%, with immature females being most active. DISCUSSION: Mothers appear to benefit energetically from AMC such that their overall activity after birth remained unchanged. Costs and benefits for allomothers seem to be variable. Some very active immature females may be benefitting from learning-to-mother. The overall low cost of AMC may facilitate a reciprocal social network among unrelated females.

Background: Human milk is considered the optimal source of nutrition for infants. Maternal diet is associated with the composition of human milk. The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) has been studied in pregnancy and during lactation, and it has been associated with changes in milk composition, yet there is a lack of research on MedDiet during lactation and infant outcomes. Methods: Mother-infant dyads (n = 167) from ABC Baby, a prospective observational study, were included in this analysis. Maternal diet was obtained using an adapted version of the National Cancer Institute Diet History Questionnaire II, at 2 weeks or 2 months postpartum. Maternal MedDiet score was calculated using servings of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, legumes, fish, monounsaturated-to-saturated fatty acid ratio, red and processed meats, and added sugar. Infants' length, weight, and flank skinfold thickness were measured at 6 months. Using World Health Organization standards, weight-for-age (WAZ), length-for-age (LAZ), and weight-for-length (WLZ) Z-scores were calculated. Multiple linear regression models were adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Higher maternal MedDiet score and intake of fruit and fish were associated with lower flank skinfold thickness (ß = -0.33, -0.52, and -1.26, respectively). Intake of nuts and seeds was associated with higher WLZ (ß = 0.29). Intake of red and processed meats was associated with lower WAZ (ß = -0.18) and LAZ (ß = -0.18). Energy-adjusted added sugar intake was associated with lower WLZ (ß = -0.02). Conclusions: The maternal MedDiet score was associated with lower skinfold thickness, while its components were associated with differences in anthropometric Z-scores. Further research on the maternal MedDiet and corresponding human milk composition is needed to explore this relationship.
