RESUMO

The ageing population creates concerns and challenges worldwide. The large number of older adults (aged over 65) in Hong Kong continues to rise as people live longer. This may result in heavy burdens on public services and problems such as a shortage of medical resources. The purpose of this study is to implement a physical literacy-based intervention among older adults in Hong Kong in order to achieve the goal of health promotion. A two-arm cluster randomized controlled trial will be employed in this proposed study. Ten daycare centers for the older adults in Hong Kong will be invited to participate in this study. The intervention group will receive functional fitness training and mastering physical literacy class twice a week with buddy peer support, and they will be asked to keep a reflective writing journal on a daily basis for 12 weeks in total. Participants will be evaluated at baseline (week 0), post-intervention (week 12), and at 6-week follow-up (week 18). This will consist of objective and self-reported measures covering elements within physical literacy (i.e., physical competence, motivation and confidence, knowledge and understanding) and also physical activity levels on an individual basis. The study intends to introduce a conceptual framework of physical literacy for the older adults through an intervention that allows older people to develop daily behaviour habits, which should promote active ageing for the older adults and greater self-esteem in later life. After this study, participants may share their positive experiences, and encourage their peers in the community to become physically literate in the future. In the long run, due to the feasibility and sustainability of these potential programs, this proposed study has the potential to connect seniors through social engagement and contribute to healthy living. BACKGROUND: As a group, autistic children with high support needs (with adaptive functioning in the range of an intellectual disability) are at risk of significant literacy difficulties. We investigated the parent-reported home literacy environment of this group of children. METHOD: Sixty-two parents of autistic children (4.5 to 18.25 years) attending an autism-specific school completed a home literacy survey reporting on their child's: (1) alphabet knowledge, (2) interest in reading, (3) activities/interactions around books, (4) reading ability, and (5) writing ability. RESULTS: We found significant positive correlations between parent-reported child interest in reading and literacy-related interactions and skills, but not with child age. Children using spoken words to communicate obtained significantly greater scores on four home-literacy subscales, but not on reading interest. CONCLUSIONS: A better understanding of the home literacy activities of autistic children with high-support needs is needed to inform educational practices aimed at promoting literacy development in this vulnerable population.

OBJECTIVES: Communities of color might disproportionately experience long-term consequences of COVID-19, known as Long COVID. We sought to understand the awareness of and experiences with Long COVID among African American/Black (AA/B), Hispanic/Latino (H/L), and Indigenous (Native) adults (18 + years of age) in Arizona who previously tested positive for COVID-19. METHODS: Between December 2022 and April 2023, the Arizona Community Engagement Alliance (AZCEAL) conducted 12 focus groups and surveys with 65 AA/B, H/L and Native community members. Data from focus groups were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify emerging issues. Survey data provided demographic information about participants and quantitative assessments of Long COVID experiences were used to augment focus group data. RESULTS: Study participants across all three racial/ethnic groups had limited to no awareness of the term Long COVID, yet many described experiencing or witnessing friends and family endure physical symptoms consistent with Long COVID (e.g., brain fog, loss of memory, fatigue) as well as associated mental health issues (e.g., anxiety, worry, post-traumatic stress disorder). Participants identified a need for Long COVID mental health and other health resources, as well as increased access to Long COVID information. CONCLUSION: To prevent Long COVID health inequities among AA/B, H/L, and Native adults living in AZ, health-related organizations and providers should increase access to culturally relevant, community-based Long COVID-specific information, mental health services, and other health resources aimed at serving these populations.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a co-designed intervention using digital resources "Vietnam Cancer Caring Coping" (V-CCC) on the health literacy, depression, and quality of life of caregivers supporting a cancer patient in oncology hospitals in Vietnam. METHODS: A pre-post quantitative evaluation with adult cancer caregivers across regional Oncology hospitals in Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, and Hue). Participants completed baseline and follow-up measures of health literacy (HLS-SF12) depression (PHQ-9) and Health-related Quality of Life (5Q-5D-5L). Participants accessed and reviewed V-CCC for a 2-week period. RESULTS: Two hundred and thirty-four caregivers completed pre and post-tests. Most participants were female (n = 143, 61%), married (n = 165, 70%), aged 18-44 (n = 155, 66%), lived rurally (n = 157, 67%). All health literacy scores of participants in post-intervention were significantly higher than that in pre-intervention across all domain's healthcare, disease prevention, and health promotion as well as the total score (p < 0.001). A significant reduction in the proportion of caregivers reporting PHQ-9 moderately severe/severe depression post-intervention was demonstrated (10.2 vs. 6.1%, respectively (p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences were observed pre and post-intervention across four 5Q-5D-5L health dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, and pain/discomfort. Regarding anxiety/depression as measured by 5Q-5D-5L the proportion of participants who reported having moderate, severe, and extreme problems in pre- and post-intervention was statistically significant (32 vs. 24%), respectively (p = 0.0028). CONCLUSION: Co-designed digital resources can reduce health literacy inequities and improve psychological outcomes for cancer caregivers.

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional website analysis aimed to determine the readability and quality of English and Spanish websites pertaining to the prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional website analysis. SETTING: Various online search engines. METHODS: We queried four popular search engines using the term "noise-induced hearing loss prevention" to reveal the top 50 English and top 50 Spanish websites for data collection. Websites meeting inclusion criteria were stratified based on the presence of a Health on the Net Code certificate (independent assessment of honesty, reliability, and quality). Websites were then independently reviewed by experts using the DISCERN criteria in order to assess information quality. Readability was calculated using the Flesch reading ease score for English and the Fernandez-Huerta formula for Spanish websites. RESULTS: Thirty-six English websites and 32 Spanish websites met the inclusion criteria. English websites had significantly lower readability (average = 56.34, SD = 11.17) compared to Spanish websites (average = 61.88, SD = 5.33) (P < .05). Spanish websites (average = 37, SD = 8.47) were also of significantly higher quality than English websites (average = 25.13, SD = 10.11). CONCLUSION: This study emphasizes the importance of providing quality and readable materials to patients seeking information about noise-induced hearing loss prevention. All of the English and Spanish websites reviewed were written at a level higher than the American Medical Association-recommended sixth-grade reading level. The study also highlights the need for evidence-based information online provided by experts in our field.

Background: Hand washing instructions for children have been implemented in school education to establish good lifestyle habits. However, repeated hand washing through education from early childhood was common for both teachers and children. If this continues, children might assume they already know how to wash their hands, stop taking handwashing instructions seriously, and become increasingly lax about washing their hands. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a new handwashing education method for children. Methods: We applied the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) test to health education on hand washing in elementary schools. This study was conducted as part of a class for elementary school students in October 2023, in Hokkaido, Japan. The subjects were 157 third-grade (9-10 years old) elementary school students. After excluding absent pupils, 147 were included in the analysis. Results: Both pre- and post-education, ATP values after handwashing were lower than those before handwashing. Following the education, children's handwashing behavior improved, with an increase in the number of point washed and appropriate timing of handwashing. Conclusion: The new handwashing education program utilizing the ATP-test succeeded in promoting handwashing behavior among many children. Visualizing handwashing using ATP values was effective in motivating children.

BACKGROUND: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of video consultation (VC) in primary care has expanded considerably in many countries. VC and other telehealth formats are often touted as a solution to improved health care access, with numerous studies showing high satisfaction with this care format among health professionals and patients. However, operationalization and measurement of patient satisfaction with VC varies across studies and often lacks consideration of dynamic contextual factors (eg, convenience, ease-of-use, or privacy) and doctor-patient relational variables that may influence patient satisfaction. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop a comprehensive and evidence-based questionnaire for assessing patient satisfaction with VC in general practice. METHODS: The vCare Patient-Satisfaction Questionnaire (the vCare-PSQ) was developed according to the COSMIN (Consensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments) guidelines. To achieve our overall objective, we pursued three aims: (1) a validation analysis of an existing patient-satisfaction scale (the PS-14), (2) an assessment of extrinsic contextual factors that may impact patient satisfaction, and (3) an assessment of pertinent intrinsic and relational satisfaction correlates (eg, health anxiety, information technology literacy, trust in the general practitioner, or convenience). For validation purposes, the questionnaire was filled out by a convenience sample of 188 Danish adults who had attended at least 1 VC. RESULTS: Our validation analysis of the PS-14 in a Danish population produced reliable results, indicating that the PS-14 is an appropriate measure of patient satisfaction with VC in Danish patient populations. Regressing situational and doctor-patient relational factors onto patient satisfaction further suggested that patient satisfaction is contingent on several factors not measured by the PS-14. These include information technology literacy and patient trust in the general practitioner, as well as several contextual pros and cons. CONCLUSIONS: Supplementing the PS-14 with dynamic measures of situational and doctor-patient relational factors may provide a more comprehensive understanding of patient satisfaction with VC. The vCare-PSQ may thus contribute to an enhanced methodological approach to assessing patient satisfaction with VC. We hope that the vCare-PSQ format may be useful for future research and implementation efforts regarding VC in a general practice setting.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is known to impact health outcomes in a multitude of ways and is impacted by language barriers. Lower health literacy is also associated with higher rates of unintended pregnancies. A progestin-only oral hormonal contraception product, norgestrel (Opill-Perrigo), was approved for over-the-counter (OTC) use in the United States in July 2023. OBJECTIVE: (s): The objective was to utilize a knowledge assessment survey to determine participants' comprehension of norgestrel from its drug facts label and compare the comprehension between primarily English- and Spanish-reading participants. METHODS: A 7-item knowledge assessment was developed and distributed to English and Spanish readers at one site within a network of federally qualified health centers. English-reading participants completed the English survey alongside use of an English copy of norgestrel's drug facts label. Spanish-reading participants completed the Spanish survey and were randomized in a 1:1 fashion to either receive an English or Spanish copy of norgestrel's drug facts label. RESULTS: The English-reading/English label (E/E) group had a higher level of comprehension of norgestrel's drug facts label compared to the Spanish-reading/English label (S/E) or Spanish-reading/Spanish label (S/S) groups. CONCLUSION: Differences exist in OTC label comprehension for norgestrel based on primary language able to be read. Advocacy for OTC labels to be readily available in languages other than English is imperative to mitigate unintended pregnancies associated with lower levels of health literacy.

BACKGROUND: The Cures Act mandated immediately released health information. In this study, we investigated patient comprehension of mammography reports and the utility of online resources to aid report interpretation. METHODS: Patients who received a normal mammogram from February to April 2022 were invited to complete semi-structured interviews paired with health literacy questionnaires to assess patient's report comprehension before and after internet search. RESULTS: Thirteen selected patients via purposeful sampling completed interviews. Most patients described their initial understanding of the mammography report as "good" and improved to between "good" and "very good" after an internet search. Patients suggested "a little column on the side" for medical terminology, "an extra prompt" for making an appointment, or a recommendation for "good sites" to improve mammography reports. CONCLUSION: Patients varied in their ability to independently interpret medical reports and seek additional resources. While online resources marginally improved patient understanding, actionable and clear resources are needed.

INTRODUCTION: When providing health information in a diverse society and during health crises, it is crucial that nurses can adapt their communication to immigrants, as this may have an impact on their health outcomes. This study seeks to identify how nurses experienced and assessed their communication and information work with immigrants during COVID-19 and to discuss measures to improve practice. METHOD: The study has an interpretive and explorative qualitative design, analyzing 10 semi-structured interviews with nurses from the municipal health service in Norway. RESULTS: Three themes were created as follows: multilingual infection control teams and cooperation with volunteers, challenges when providing COVID-19 information, and the nurses' suggestions for improvements in the event of a new pandemic or other health crisis. DISCUSSION: Nurses' cultural competence and their knowledge of immigrants' health literacy can help them understand how immigrants think and behave during illness. It is important that nurses use discretion during health crises.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) refers to an individual's ability to access, understand, and apply health information to make informed decisions about their health. On the contrary, oral health literacy (OHL) focuses on an individual's ability to understand and utilize oral health information to maintain good oral health. AIM: This study presents a comprehensive literature review that explores the theoretical foundations and practical applications of HL and OHL. DESIGN: A comprehensive search was conducted using keywords on the following databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. RESULTS: The existing literature on various aspects of HL, including the most common used definitions of HL, conceptual frameworks, and consequences of limited health and OHL, was summarized. Additionally, the review discussed the significance of HL and OHL. Also, the relation between parent level of OHL and children's oral health was described. It further highlights modern approaches that have been shown in previous studies to improve the OHL of primary caregivers. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the significance of HL and OHL is crucial in developing effective interventions that can address disparities and improve oral health outcomes for individuals of all backgrounds.

We created and tested a family-based intervention with families of children in Grades 1 and 2 with reading and behavioral difficulties to investigate its impact on text comprehension. Developed with input from parents, reading experts, and behavior specialists, Family-RISE (Reading Intervention with Supports for Engagement) integrates evidence-based practices for enhancing students' knowledge of narrative texts with effective behavioral supports to maximize student engagement and minimize disruptive behaviors to help parents engage successfully in shared storybook reading. We assessed the effects of Family-RISE on children's narrative text comprehension using a multiple-baseline design. A functional relation was established between Family-RISE and narrative text comprehension, indicating Family-RISE substantially improved narrative text comprehension. Furthermore, nonoverlap of all pairs, Tau-U, and standard mean difference effect sizes were all considered large in favor of the intervention. Family members reported that the intervention was highly usable, feasible to implement, and socially valid. These findings underscore the promise of the Family-RISE intervention and the value of developing interventions that simultaneously support reading and behavior for children with co-occurring difficulties in these areas.

Background: Exercise promotion interventions for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) are often offered on a face-to-face basis, follow a generic "one-size-fit-all" approach, and are not typically delivered at diagnosis. Considering PD's heterogenous nature, the existing evidence on the merits of exercise on symptom management and the expressed wishes of people living with PD for access to timely and tailored evidence-based information, there is a demand for interventions that are easily accessible, scalable and co-designed with people living with PD. Objective: Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a co-designed digital intervention promoting exercise and physical activity, in people newly diagnosed with PD. Methods: Thirty people living with PD for less than one year participated in an assessor-blinded randomized feasibility trial from June 2022 to April 2023. The intervention group received the 8-week Knowledge, Exercise Efficacy and Participation (KEEP) intervention comprising 6 interactive digital modules and 4 online live group discussions facilitated by a specialist physiotherapist. Assessments were performed at baseline, post intervention and at 6-month follow up. Results: Thirty participants were recruited to target with a 64% recruitment rate (30/47). All but one participant completed the 6-month follow-up assessment. There was high retention (97%), module completion (91%), and online discussion attendance (88%). Outcome measure collection was feasible, including accelerometer data with a daily average wear time of 23.9 hours (SD:0.295). Conclusions: The KEEP intervention was feasible and acceptable in people newly diagnosed with PD. A larger trial is needed to assess intervention efficacy and correlation between knowledge, self-efficacy, and activity levels.


Exercise and physical activity have been found beneficial in managing both motor and non-motor symptoms in people living with Parkinson's. But there aren't many programs available right after diagnosis that focus on exercise and explain why it's important for managing PD symptoms and how to exercise with PD. Most existing programs use a one-size-fits-all approach and don't give personalized information. In this study, researchers wanted to see if people who were recently diagnosed with PD would join a study promoting exercise through an online program. This program included educational information and live online group discussions with both people living with Parkinson's and a specialist physiotherapist. The program was developed together with people living with Parkinson's and healthcare professionals to ensure that it better suited the needs of people newly diagnosed with PD. Thirty people took part in the study. They were randomly put into two groups: one received the online program, while the other group continued with their usual care. Participants filled out questionnaires and wore a wrist accelerometer for seven days to track their physical activity levels. The researchers found that most participants stayed in the study (97%), completed the program modules (91%), and attended the live discussions (88%) and wore the accelerometers for 23.9 hours a day on average. Overall, the study showed that the program was doable and well-received. Participants said they had a better understanding on the benefits of exercise in PD. However, a larger study is needed to see if the program helps increase activity levels.

The aim of this review was to evaluate the association between parental oral health literacy and children's oral health outcomes. A comprehensive search was conducted across four electronic databases to identify articles that were published up to October 2023. The articles that met our predetermined criteria were then screened and assessed for eligibility. Updated Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework was followed. After identifying 2964 references, duplicates were removed, leaving 1992 titles. Following the screening of article titles and abstracts, 19 full-text articles underwent a thorough examination. The scoping review included 19 relevant studies. In most of the studies included, the status of oral health of children is linked to the caregiver's oral health literacy. Children of caregivers with low oral health literacy were found to exhibit deleterious oral health habits, including inadequate teeth brushing and the use of bottles at night-time. Dental caries was found to be more common in children whose parents had low oral health literacy. Striving for optimal oral health literacy in the community is a valuable and worthwhile effort. Equipping parents with the skills and knowledge to make appropriate decisions about their children's oral health could positively prevent dental caries and promote better oral health outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Stroke is a leading cause of death in Taiwan. Poor public knowledge of stroke may lead to delays in prehospital arrival, resulting in unfavorable prognoses. Studies have investigated public knowledge of stroke and highlighted the importance of stroke education, however, few such studies have been conducted in Taiwan. This study assessed the changes in public knowledge of stroke between 2012 and 2020 by conducting a survey during two World Stroke Day events. Furthermore, this study identified areas where educational efforts may have been insufficient. MATERIALS & METHODS: Questionnaires were distributed to the participants of 2012 and 2020 World Stroke Day events in Taiwan. In total, 328 and 336 questionnaires were completed, respectively. Stroke literacy and knowledge were analyzed between 2012 and 2020. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test or independent t-test. p < 0.05 indicates statistical significance. RESULTS: Hypertension was the most recognized risk factor for stroke in both years (p < 0.001), and recognition of most of the given risk factors significantly increased. In addition, recognition of more than half of the stroke warning signs significantly increased, awareness of the correct acute stroke response also increased (p < 0.001), and overall stroke literacy in Taiwan increased (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Stroke literacy and knowledge in Taiwan have improved significantly between 2012 and 2020, but many people still lack adequate stroke knowledge and awareness. Government health department must take this sort of intervention continually (campaigns) and novel approaches (e.g. board game…) to improve stroke literacy and knowledge in public health. BACKGROUND: The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare necessitates understanding the perspectives of future practitioners. This study investigated the perceptions of German-speaking medical and dental students regarding the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in their future practices. METHODS: A 28-item survey adapted from the AI in Healthcare Education Questionnaire (AIHEQ) and the Medical Student's Attitude Toward AI in Medicine (MSATAIM) scale was administered to students in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland from April to July 2023. Participants were recruited through targeted advertisements on Facebook and Instagram and were required to be proficient in German and enrolled in medical or dental programs. The data analysis included descriptive statistics, correlations, t tests, and thematic analysis of the open-ended responses. RESULTS: Of the 409 valid responses (mean age = 23.13 years), only 18.2% of the participants reported receiving formal training in AI. Significant positive correlations were found between self-reported tech-savviness and AI familiarity (r = 0.67) and between confidence in finding reliable AI information and positive attitudes toward AI (r = 0.72). While no significant difference in AI familiarity was found between medical and dental students, dental students exhibited slightly more positive attitudes toward the integration of AI into their future practices. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the need for comprehensive AI education in medical and dental curricula to address knowledge gaps and prepare future healthcare professionals for the ethical and effective integration of AI in practice.

The speech amplitude envelope carries important acoustic information required for speech intelligibility and contains sensory cues (amplitude rise times, ARTs) that play a key role in both sensory rhythm perception and neural speech encoding. Individual differences in children's sensitivity to ARTs have been related to the development of children's phonological processing skills across languages by the Temporal Sampling theory. Impaired processing of ARTs also characterises children with dyslexia. However, different ART tasks have been employed in different studies, in different languages, and at different ages. Here, we compare the sensitivity of three frequently used ART tasks (based on synthetic syllables, sine tones, and speech-shaped noise) in a longitudinal study of English-speaking children with and without dyslexia. Children's ability to discriminate rising frequency, duration, and intensity was also tested. ART discrimination in all 3 tasks was significantly inter-related, but different relations to phonology and literacy were found for different ART tasks at different ages. In particular, the often-used sine tone and speech-shaped noise ART tasks showed greater sensitivity in older children, while the synthetic syllable task (/ba/ rise) showed greater sensitivity in younger children. Sensitivity to rising frequency was also related to phonology and literacy across ages. The data are interpreted with respect to the Temporal Sampling theory of developmental dyslexia.

To address the increasing rates of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury among young sports participants, the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) and the Aspen Institute convened a meeting of a new national coalition to make ACL injury prevention a fundamental aspect of youth sports. This executive summary outlines the National ACL Injury Coalition's goals as defined at its inaugural meeting held at HSS on March 27, 2023. Using a theory of change called "collective impact" designed to support collaboration and drive systems-level change, the coalition focused on 4 strategic priorities intended to reduce ACL injury rates in high school sports participants: widespread implementation of interventions (ensuring that student athletes are adequately trained), high-quality education (raising awareness among many stakeholders), equitable access (ensuring that all high school sports participants, regardless of the resources available at their schools, have access to injury prevention resources), and aligning stakeholders (uniting disparate entities-schools, sports clubs, parents, coaches, and others in these efforts). The group outlined short-range, medium-range, and long-range goals over a 3-year period, including the launch of an ACL injury prevention toolkit for use by adolescent sports participants and teams, athletic trainers, coaches, and other key stakeholders.

In recent years, Socially Responsible Investment (SRI), which integrates financial returns with social impact, has gained prominence. Commonly referred to as ethical or green investing, this study employs the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to analyze factors that influence SRI behaviors. The TPB model suggests that behavior is primarily influenced by attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control (PBC), and intention. The study uniquely adapts the TPB model by incorporating financial literacy as a critical factor, a hypothesis substantiated through primary data from Chinese investors. Furthermore, the research highlights risk propensity as a moderating variable, significantly affecting these dynamics and offering essential insights into SRI practices. By utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in conjunction with TPB, the study investigates the behavioral patterns of investors in Chinese stock market with a specific focus on the impacts of financial literacy, the moderating role of risk propensity, and the mediating effects of investment intentions on SRI behaviors. The findings reveal that PBC plays the most crucial role in shaping investors' intentions and behaviors toward SRI. Additionally, the results recommend that policymakers and SRI providers consider the social influences on investors' decisions and acknowledge the significant impact of investors' perceived control in forming their SRI intentions and actions.
