RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the factors associated with and impact on the femtosecond-assisted (FS-assisted) limbal relaxing incision (LRI) combined with the steep-meridian tri-planar clear corneal incision (TCCI) to reduce astigmatism in patients undergoing Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery. METHODS: Retrospective case series. The study reviewed patients with ICL surgery combined with FS-assisted LRIs paired with steep-meridian TCCIs. Correlation analysis examined the relationship between independent variables, including preoperative characteristics (intraocular pressure, corneal thickness, axial length, et al.), TCCI, and LRI surgical parameters. The predictors of surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) were determined using individual-level analysis and accounting for inter-eye correlation with the generalized estimating equation (GEE). RESULTS: The study enrolled 69 patients, with 114 eyes (55 right and 59 left). The mean spherical equivalent (SEQ) was - 10.29 ± 2.99D and - 9.99 ± 2.72D for the right and left eye, respectively, while the mean preoperative corneal astigmatism was - 1.54 ± 0.47D and - 1.54 ± 0.46D for the right and left eyes, respectively. After 12 months of follow-up, univariate analysis revealed significant correlations between SIA and intraocular pressure (IOP), astigmatism type, TCCI position (degree), peripheral corneal thickness (PCT), LRI arc incision diameter, post depth (%), and angle, respectively (P = 0.046, 0.016, 0.039, 0.040, 0.009, 0.000, 0.000). Multivariate analysis using GEE demonstrated that axial length (AL), astigmatism type, LRI arc diameter, and angle were independent predictors of SIA (P = 0.000, 0.005, 0.029, 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The type of astigmatism and axial length were independent factors that affected SIA when modifying the LRI arc diameter and angle through FS-assisted steep-meridian TCCI paired with LRI in ICL surgery.

Importance: Understanding acupuncture point microenvironments is vital for optimizing treatment efficacy. Evaluating changes in water content at these points can provide further insights into the effects of acupuncture on tissues. Objective: This study aimed to measure tissue dielectric constant (TDC) and assess changes in water content, specifically at stomach 36 (ST36, Zusanli) and spleen 6 (SP6, Sanyinjiao) acupuncture points. Methods: In a controlled, blinded, randomized trial, 113 healthy volunteers were divided into six groups based on TDC sensor diameters (XS, M, and L): three control groups and three acupuncture groups. They were assessed at three time points: T1, baseline; T2, 20 min post-needle withdrawal; and T3, 40 min post-needle withdrawal. Electrical impedance (EI) was also analyzed. Significance level was set at p < 0.001. Results: TDC at ST36 and SP6 significantly decreased with the XS probe at T2 and T3 compared with that at T1 (F8, 452: 54.61). TDC did not significantly vary between T2 and T3 with M and L probes. EI data indicated that the current passage increased in the SP (F2, 226: 39.32) and ST (F2, 226: 37.32) groups during T2 and T3 compared with that during T1 within their respective groups and controls. Conclusions: and Relevance: This study demonstrated the efficacy of TDC measurements in detecting water content fluctuations at acupuncture points and their responses to needles. TDC measurements, which were validated against EI, provide valuable insights into acupuncture point microenvironments and thus help optimize treatments.

The paper introduces the thinking of the diagnosis and treatment with high-dense silver needle therapy for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) based on the theory of six-meridian differentiation. According to the severity of LSS and the depth of illness location, LSS is differentiated as six syndromes/patterns, including taiyang disorder, yangming disorder, shaoyang disorder, shaoyin disorder, jueyin disorder and taiyin disorder. The high-dense silver needle therapy is used. The main points include the bilateral Jiaji points (EX-B 2) from L1 to L5 and the acupoints of the bladder meridian of foot-taiyang (1.5 cun lateral to each side of L1 to L5); and the supplementary points are selected from the affected meridians. According to the disorders of six meridians, the length of moxa stick is adjusted in warm acupuncture, targeting the tender sites of soft tissue damage. In order to obtain the satisfactory effects, the appropriate physical exercise is applicable rather than absolutely limiting the movement of affected vertebrae during the treatment.

The paper introduces JIAO Lin's clinical experience in treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) by manual mobilization of meridian muscle regions. Professor JIAO Lin believes that the key to the occurrence and development of KOA lies in the disorder of meridian muscle regions (sinews/fascia). In pathology, four stages are divided, i.e. the acute stage, the blockage stage, the contraction stage and the atrophy stage of muscle regions, characterized as multi-layer, multi-dimensional and multi-morphological distribution. In treatment, based on the principle, "taking pain sites as stimulating points", the sites, with reduced pain threshold and distributed along the meridian muscle regions, are regarded as "acupoints" for intervention. Manual mobilization of meridian muscle regions is the dominant approach, combined with routine acupuncture, heat-sensitive moxibustion, cupping and bloodletting corresponding to the features of syndromes and meridian manifestation at different stages. The comprehensive treatment may restore and reconstruct the physiological functions of the meridian muscle regions around knee joints by "nourishing tendons, strengthening bones and benefiting joints".

OBJECTIVES: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupuncture intervention at different time for patients with sudden hearing loss. METHODS: According to the timing of acupuncture intervention, 86 patients were divided into early exposure group (n=43) and late exposure group (n=43) . The early exposure group was given acupuncture treatment within 14 days of onset, and the late exposure group was given acupuncture treatment after 14 days of onset. After propensity score matching (PSM, a statistical matching technique for observational data) processing by using SPSS26.0 software, outcomes of 30 cases in the early exposure group and 30 cases in the late exposure group were analyzed. In addition to receiving basic treatment with drugs for vascular dilatation, thrombolysis, nourishing nerve, etc., all patients of the two groups were treated with neck acupuncture ("Neck Seven Meridian Lines" acupuncture), once every other day except Sundays, for a total of 12 time. Before, after the treatment and 3 months after the treatment, the total score of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI, 0, 2 and 4 points for each of the 25 items, total scores = 100 points) scale was used to evaluate the improvement of tinnitus symptoms caused by hearing loss. The clinical therapeutic effect was evaluated according to the efficacy grading criteria in the Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Sudden Deafness (2015) and the changes of pure tone audiometry curve. Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the effect of factors that might influence efficacy before propensity score matching. RESULTS: The THI scores of patients in both groups decreased strikingly after the treatment and 3 months' follow-up (P<0.05). Compared with the same time-points of the late exposure group, the total THI scores of post-treatment and 3 months' follow-up were evidently lower in the early exposure group (P<0.05). The effective rate of the early exposure group (22/30, 80.00%) was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of the late exposure group (16/30, 53.33%). The classification of sudden deafness and the application of traditional Chinese medicine in this study were not independent factors affecting the total effective rate. CONCLUSIONS: The time point of acupuncture intervention is an important factor affecting the effect on hearing and tinnitus disability of patients with sudden deafness. The earlier acupuncture treatment is accepted, the better the therapeutic effect is.

The property theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years, playing a pivotal role in the clinical application of TCM. While advancements in energy metabolism, chemical composition analysis, machine learning, ion current modeling, and supercritical fluid technology have provided valuable insight into how aspects of TCM property theory may be measured, these studies only capture specific aspects of TCM property theory in isolation, overlooking the holistic perspective inherent in TCM. To systematically investigate the modern interpretation of the TCM property theory from multidimensional perspectives, we consulted the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 edition) to compile a list of Chinese materia medica (CMM). Then, using the Latin names of each CMM and gut microbiota as keywords, we searched the PubMed database for relevant research on gut microbiota and CMM. The regulatory patterns of different herbs on gut microbiota were then summarized from the perspectives of the four natures, the five flavors and the meridian tropism. In terms of the four natures, we found that warm-natured medicines promoted the colonization of specific beneficial bacteria, while cold-natured medicines boosted populations of some beneficial bacteria while suppressing pathogenic bacteria. Analysis of the five flavors revealed that sweet-flavored and bitter-flavored CMMs positively influenced beneficial bacteria while inhibiting harmful bacteria. CMMs with different meridian tropism exhibited complex modulative patterns on gut microbiota, with Jueyin (Liver) and Taiyin (Lung) meridian CMMs generally exerting a stronger effect. The gut microbiota may be a biological indicator for characterizing the TCM property theory, which not only enhances our understanding of classic TCM theory but also contributes to its scientific advancement and application in healthcare. Identifying the study subject, "to be in meridian or collateral", is the first step of meridian-collateral differentiation. Combined with the ancient literature and clinical practice of acupuncture and moxibustion, the methods of identifying "to be in meridian or collateral" and its values are elaborated. Through analyzing the onset location of symptoms and the body layers of lesions, as well as the palpation and observation in meridian-collateral detection, "to be meridian" or "to be collateral" is identified in disease diagnosis. It may guide the choice of techniques of acupuncture and moxibustion. Identifying "to be meridian or collateral" is crucial in meridian-collateral differentiation, which not only contributes to improving the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and moxibustion, but also to better recognizing diseases and understanding the relevant concepts of techniques of acupuncture and moxibustion in view of acupuncture and moxibustion, and perfecting the system of meridian-collateral differentiation.

Background: This study aimed to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of Jingjin (muscle region of the meridian, sinew/tendon/fascia) acupuncture therapy for the treatment of spastic cerebral palsy. Methods: Computer searches of the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM) Database, Wanfang database, Wipu (VIP) database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database for published randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies on Jingjin acupuncture treatment of cerebral palsy from the beginning of the database construction until 30 November 2023 were performed, and the quality of the papers was assessed through independent data extraction by two individuals and then meta-analyzed using RevMan5.4 software. A total of 20 RCTs involving 1,453 patients were included. Results: The overall effective rate of Jingjin acupuncture therapy was better than that of conventional therapy, with a combined odds ratio (OR) of 4.70 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of [3.05, 7.24]. The Modified Ashworth Spasticity (MAS) Scale, Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), Fine Motor Function Measure (FMFM), and Comprehensive Spasticity Scale (CSS) scores are superior to conventional therapy. Conclusion: Jingjin acupuncture therapy is effective in treating spastic cerebral palsy and has better overall efficacy than conventional therapy. Due to the low quality of some of the literature in this study type, more high-quality, well-designed clinical studies are needed to validate it.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of acupressure bladder meridian (ABM) on anxiety in rats. Chronic stress was induced rats to establish rat anxiety model. Shuttle experiment and open field experiments of were used to measure behaviors. The levels of cytokines in serum and hippocampus of rats were detected. Brain neurotransmitters (dopamine, 5- hydroxy tryptamine, norepinephrine) were detected by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting were used to detect MAPK and BDNF signal pathway in hippocampus of rats. ABM significantly improve behaviors, decreased cytokine levels in serum and hippocampus. ABM restored the changes of neurotransmitters and significantly decreased protein expressions of MAPK signal pathway and increased protein expressions of BDNF signal pathway in hippocampus of rats. The results shown that ABM significantly improved anxiety via inhibition of MAPK signal pathway and increased BDNF signal pathway.

Visual performance across the visual fields interacts with visual tasks and visual stimuli, and visual resolution decreases as a function of eccentricity, varying at isoeccentric locations. In this study, we investigated the extent of asymmetry and the rate of change in visual acuity threshold for visual word form (VWF) identification at horizontal and vertical azimuths across the fovea, and at eccentricities of 1°, 2°, 4°, 6° and 8° for 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% contrast levels, to determine whether and how the eccentricities, meridians, and contrasts modulated the VWF identification acuity threshold. The stimuli were 16 traditional Chinese characters of similar legibility. Participants pressed a key to indicate the character presented, either monocularly or binocularly, at one of 21 randomly selected locations. A staircase procedure was used to determine the threshold, and a multiple linear regression model was used to fit the linear cortical magnification factor (CMF). We found that (1) the asymmetry was most pronounced on the vertical and superior azimuths, (2) the asymmetry between the right and left azimuths was not significant, (3) the CMF was significantly smaller on the vertical azimuth than on the horizontal azimuth, (4) the CMF was smaller on the superior vertical azimuth than on the inferior azimuth, and (5) monocular viewing and low contrast enhanced the CMF difference between azimuths. In conclusion, vertical and horizontal azimuths, location of eccentricity, contrast levels of word symbols, and monocular/binocular viewing have different effects on visual field asymmetry and cortical magnification factors.

There are the differences in the location of some acupoints between textbooks Meridians and Acupoints and Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Both of the textbooks are in the category of the "14th Five-Year Plan". The differences in acupoint location have brought some confusion for students, full-time teachers and researchers in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. In the paper, based on GB/T 12346-2021: Nomenclature and Location of Meridian Points, published in2021, and in reference with GB/T 12346-2006: Nomenclature and Location of Acupuncture Points, published in 2006, the discrepancy in the acupoint location was systematically collated in the aspects of the expression style and layout, text expression and potential difference of location between these two textbooks, published by China Press of Traditional Chinese Medicine, People's Medical Publishing House and China Science Publishing. Based on the historical evolution and the academic controversy of acupoint positioning, the reasons of the differences in acupoint location were analyzed, the potential influences on the teaching, examination, competition and research of Chinese medicine acupuncture were explored, and the suggestions for solution were proposed.

Background: Home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation utilizing technologies such as radiofrequency, microcurrent, and light emitting diode have gained widespread attention due to their claimed ability to improve skin tightness and elasticity, making them popular among consumers. However, there is controversy within the industry regarding the effectiveness and safety of these devices. Objective: This study aims to verify the safety and effectiveness of these home beauty devices in treating skin aging based on relevant efficacy evaluation indicators. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed and web of science was conducted to include original research literature on the efficacy of home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation over the past two decades. The selected literature was processed and analyzed based on efficacy evaluation indicators such as sample size, follow-up period, experimental results, adverse reactions, and others. Results: After screening, a total of 18 clinical studies were included. A comprehensive analysis of the experimental results and adverse reaction indicators from existing literature revealed that home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation can improve skin aging to a certain extent. Apart from transient redness and swelling, no other adverse reactions were observed. Conclusion: Despite the variety of home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation available in the market, corresponding research reports are limited. Existing studies suffer from issues such as small sample sizes and short follow-up periods, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive efficacy evaluation system. Furthermore, the physical stimulation of meridian acupoints by home beauty devices for facial rejuvenation may meet the multi-dimensional anti-aging needs of patients, suggesting a potential direction for future research.

Introduction: Current research on Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) assumes that ASMR is always accompanied by contentment, and it is distinct from frisson due to positive emotions. Thus, research investigations tend to limit their scope to solely focusing on the sensation of relaxation that ASMR induces. This study explores whether it is possible to have a different emotional experience and still perceive ASMR, testing the theory of ASMR as an amplifier of pre-existing emotion instead of a determination of positive affect. Methods: The emotional arousal and valence, and mood changes of 180 ASMR-capable and incapable individuals were analysed using questionnaires after altering the affective interpretation associated with auditory ASMR (tapping) with visual priming to examine whether the primed emotion (fearful, relaxing, or neutral) could be amplified. Results: It was found that an ASMR response occurred in all priming conditions, including the fear priming group. No significant difference was found in the emotional outcome or mood of the neutral and relaxing priming groups. Upon comparison with ASMR-incapable individuals, both the relaxing and neutral priming groups demonstrated the same affect, but greater potent for ASMR-capable. Individuals who appraised ASMR after visual fear priming demonstrated a significant decrease in positive emotional valence and increased arousal. Conclusion: The findings suggest that ASMR occurs in both positive and negative emotional situations, suppressing contentment induction if ASMR stimuli are interpreted negatively and amplifying contentment when interpreted positively. While more research is needed, the results highlight that ASMR and frisson might describe the same phenomenon, both a physically felt signature of emotion. Therapeutic usage of ASMR should carefully select appropriate stimuli that emphasise contentment to avoid potential health risks associated with negative emotions until a further understanding of ASMR's affective parameters has been established.

An abundance of studies from different international groups have demonstrated tracers along linear pathways resembling meridians over the body surface of humans. All experiments of the studies have been conducted by injection of a radiotracer solution or tracer dyes in a volume of solution into acupuncture points (acupoints). The solution injected into acupoints produces much stronger mechanical stimuli than acupuncture, which causes axon reflex. Anatomical studies have demonstrated that acupoints/meridians exist higher number of small nerve fibers and blood vessels with rich nitric oxide (NO) and neuropeptides in the cutaneous tissues as structures for the biomolecules mediated axon reflexes. Recent advances have determined that NO and calcitonin generelated peptides play crucial roles in the comprehension of the axon reflex. The stimuli-evoked axon reflex and NOergic biomolecules/neuropeptides increase local blood flow with higher levels in acupoints/meridians, which move radioactive substances or tracer dyes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue under a linear path resembling acupoints and meridians, the important phenomena of meridians induced by the stimuli. The evidence and understanding of the biomolecular processes of the tracers along linear pathways resembling meridians have been summarized with an emphasis on recent developments of NO and neuropeptides mediating stimuli-evoked axon reflexes to increase local blood flow with higher levels in acupoints/meridians, which move radioactive substances or tracer dyes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue contributing to tracers along linear pathways resembling meridians in this mini-review.

ObjectiveTo study the characteristics of imprinting template of flavonoid clusters in four Chinese medicines attributed to the lung meridian, and to establish an in vitro experimental approach for the study of the attribution of Chinese medicines to the lung meridian. MethodBased on 13 Chinese medicines, including Xanthii Fructus, Houttuyniae Herba, Fagopyri Dibotryis Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma and so on, which only belong to the lung meridian in Chinese Materia Medica(the 13th Five-Year planning textbook of general higher education), we identified four representative Chinese medicines, namely Houttuyniae Herba, Fagopyri Dibotryis Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma and Mori Cortex, and set up their fingerprints by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and calculated the molecular connectivity indices of various components in the four Chinese medicines, the similarity to their mean value was calculated by included angle cosine method, so as to establish the quantitative relationship of construction versus imprinting ability, and to determine the order of each component in the lung meridian. A total of 7 reference substances, including chlorogenic acid, rutin, quercetin, isoquercitrin, hyperoside, epicatechin, and iridin, were selected to validate the overall conformational relationships of flavonoids of the model, as well as its predictive ability. ResultHouttuyniae Herba, Fagopyri Dibotryis Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma and Mori Cortex contained a total of 437 chemical components with an average molecular connectivity index similarity of 0.995 6. The four Chinese medicines contained a total of 204 flavonoids with an average molecular connectivity index similarity of 0.978 0, which was second only to the alkaloids with 0.985 1. The retention time(tR) of the 7 reference substances showed a good conformational relationship with the similarity of the molecular connectivity index(tR=831.4×S-790.3, r=0.861 4, P<0.01), which was applicable to the in vitro attribution study of the position, similarity, and relative similarity with tR of the cluster of 98.04% of flavonoids. Accordingly, the 1st position was kuwanon D, with a similarity of molecular connectivity index of 0.987 7 and a tR of 30.88 min, the 200th position was chlorogenic acid, with a similarity of molecular connectivity index of 0.958 2 and a tR of 6.36 min. The total first-order moment of the four Chinese medicines calculated by total statistical moment method of fingerprint was 24.26 min, ranked 21, which could characterize 99.19% of the whole, and the total first-order moment of the total peak area of the 7 reference substances in the four Chinese medicines was 20.00 min, with a rank of 46, which could characterize 98.68% of the whole. ConclusionFlavonoid clusters are suitable probes for the characterization of imprinting template for the study of the lung meridian, which can be established a quantitative imprinting method for meridian tropism of Chinese medicines in vitro.

ObjectiveTo compare the effects of Taxillus chinensis from different hosts with different meridian affinity on bone microstructure and bone metabolism in ovariectomized osteoporotic rats, and investigate its mechanism of action. MethodEighty-eight specific-pathogen-free (SPF)-grade female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were selected and randomly divided into 11 groups: sham-operated group, model group, low-, medium- and high-dose groups of T. chinensis from Morus alba (2.5, 5, and 10 g·kg-1), low-, medium- and high-dose groups of T. chinensis from Cinnamomum cassia (2.5, 5, and 10 g·kg-1), and low-, medium- and high-dose groups of T. chinensis from C. burmannii (2.5, 5, and 10 g·kg-1). After 12 weeks of drug intervention, the rats were examined for proximal femur bone density and bone microstructure using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and micro-computed tomography (Micro-CT). Histopathological changes in rat femur were observed by the hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE). Contents of serum estradiol (E2), bone Gla protein (BGP), bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP-5b) and pre-collagen type Ⅰ amino-terminal protopeptide (PINP) were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Real-time PCR) was employed to detect the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expressions of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), Smad1, Smad9 and recombinant runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) in rat humerus. Western blot was used to detect the protein expressions of BMP-2, p-Smad1/5/9 and Runx2 in rat humerus. ResultCompared with that in the sham-operated group, the femur microstructure of rats in the model group was significantly disrupted, with significant decreases in bone mineral density (BMD) value, bone volume fraction (BV/TV), trabecular number (Tb.N), and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) (P<0.01), and significant increases in trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) and structure model index (SMI) (P<0.01). The serum levels of BGP, BALP, TRACP-5b and PINP were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), and E2 levels were significantly decreased (P<0.01). The mRNA expressions of BMP-2, Smad1, Smad9, and Runx2 were significantly decreased in rat humerus (P<0.01), and the protein expressions of BMP-2, p-Smad1/5/9, and Runx2 were significantly reduced (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the administration groups of T. chinensis from different hosts all elevated the BMD, BV/TV, Tb.N, Tb.Th, Tb.Sp, and SMI levels in the femur, improved bone microstructure, increased serum E2 levels (P<0.05, P<0.01), lowered the levels of serum BGP, BALP, TRACP-5b, and PINP, upregulated the mRNA expression of BMP-2, Smad1, and Runx2 and upregulated the mRNA expression levels of Smad9 (P<0.05, P<0.01), and upregulated the protein expressions levels of BMP-2, p-Smad1/5/9, and Runx2 (P<0.01). The best effect was observed in the group of T. chinensis from C. cassia. ConclusionT. chinensis from different hosts improved osteoporosis in ovariectomized rats, with the group of T. chinensis from C. cassia being the most potent among the administered groups, and its treatment of osteoporosis may regulate the balance of bone conversion by regulating BMP/Smad signaling pathway.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of acupressure bladder meridian (ABM) on anxiety in rats with chronic stress. METHODS: The sugar water preference (SPF), tail suspension time (TST) and forced swimming time (FST) of rats were measured. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), myeloperoxidase (MPO) in hippocampus tissue, oxidative stress parameters and inflammatory cytokines were detected. Underlying mechanisms of ABM on anxiety were detected. lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulated PC12 cells were adopted in vitro. HMGB1 knockdown were used in PC12 cells, and related signaling was further detected. RESULTS: ABM significantly increased SPF, decreased TST and FST. ABM decreased ROS, MPO levels, decreased the levels of inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, ABM decreased the levels of oxidative stress index. ABM reduced the expression of inflammation-related proteins mediated by HMGB1, increased nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor 2 (Nrf-2) and hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1). In vitro PC12 cells, Rat serum (RS-ABM) treated with ABM significantly decreased LPS induced inflammation-related proteins and increased Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway. HMGB1 knockdown inhibited LPS-induced PC12 cell inflammatory signaling pathway and increased Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that ROS-dependent HMGB1 plays an important role in anxiety, and ABM exhibits inhibited inflammation in anxiety.

Acupuncture is gaining popularity and wider acceptance as a treatment modality within the field of sports medicine. Our objective was to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature pertaining to acupuncture in sports medicine to shed light on approaches utilized in acupuncture while revealing its personalized nature and its impact on athletes' preparation, performance, and recovery. We evaluated acupuncture research in the context of medicine and sports-related injury treatment, assessing its impact on athletic performance across demographics of athletes. Athletes participating in most sports have shown positive outcomes from acupuncture interventions. Acupuncture improves peak oxygen levels, maximum heart rate, delayed-onset muscle soreness, pain, swelling, explosive force production, and joint mobility. Furthermore, the efficacy of acupuncture appears to be similar regardless of age and sex. Lastly, the acceptance of acupuncture is influenced by cultural factors, with Western and traditional East Asian cultures exhibiting distinct perspectives on its rationale and mechanisms of action. Traditional East Asian acupuncturists typically employ qi and meridian theories in their acupuncture practices, with the recent incorporation of Western concepts. Acupuncture shows promise as an effective treatment for musculoskeletal pain and neuropathies in athletes across different age groups and for addressing injuries in various sports. Our comprehensive review will enhance our understanding of acupuncture's potential as a complementary or distinct therapeutic approach compared to conventional therapies. Additionally, our review explores its specific applications within different sports and delves into the cultural dimensions involved in integrating this practice into modern sports medicine.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke spasticity (PSS) is a common complication of stroke. Current PSS treatments have been linked to high costs, lack of long-term effectiveness, and undesirable side effects. Vibrational and heated stone-needle therapy (VHS) has not been utilized to treat PSS, and its safety and effectiveness have yet to be proven by high-quality clinical research. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of VHS combined with meridian dredging exercise (MDE) in patients with PSS. METHODS: One hundred participants with stroke were included and randomly assigned to a treatment group (VHS plus MDEs) and a control group (MDEs alone). Patients in both groups were treated for 4 weeks. The primary outcome measures were the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), while the secondary outcome measures were the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) Scale and Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale (SS-QOL). The evaluations were at baseline (T0) at 4 weeks of treatment (T1) and at 12 weeks of follow-up without treatment (T2). RESULTS: At T1 and T2, there were significant differences in MAS between the two groups (p = 0.001). From the perspective of distribution, the VHS plus MDE group had significant changes, and the group-time interactions of upper and lower extremities in FMA, ADL, and SS-QOL were statistically significant (p < 0.001), indicating that patients' symptoms improved after treatment. But the overall effect size is small, especially the effect size of improvement in SS-QOL at T1. CONCLUSION: VHS in combination with MDE can consistently alleviate PSS, enhance limb function, and improve the quality of life of patients with PSS. But we need to optimize the device further and observe the improvement of patients for a more extended period.HintergrundSpastik nach Schlaganfall (PSS; post-stroke spasticity) ist eine häufige Komplikation des Schlaganfalls. Meridian-tendon is a central concept in meridian theory of TCM, and its basic research has been increasingly emphasized. While there is no unified understanding of the essence of meridian-tendon, the concept that function of fascia could partially reflect the functions of meridian-tendons has reached consensus in the academic community. This article suggests that under the guidance of meridian-tendon theory, based on previous research foundation of fascia, focusing on adopting fascia research methods, the mechanisms of tender point hyperalgesia and abnormal proliferation related to meridian lesions should be adopted to explain yitong weishu (taking the worst painful sites of muscle spasm as the points), and the mechanisms of meridian intervention efficacy should be adopted to explain yizhi weishu (feelings from patients and acupuncture operators). Furthermore, this article provides an analysis of the future trends in basic research of meridian tendons.
