RESUMO
The aim of the study was to analyze the relationship between air temperature data against hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases of children (under five years of age) and the elderly (over 65) in subtropical Porto Alegre, Brazil, comparing outcomes for 3 sequential years, 2018-2020, pre- and post-COVID 19 pandemic. Meteorological and hospital admission (HA) data for Porto Alegre, marked by a Koeppen-Geiger's Cfa climate type with well-defined seasons, were used in the analyses. HA was obtained for respiratory diseases (J00-99, according to the International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10) from the Brazilian DATASUS (Unified Health System database). We performed correlation analysis between variables (HA versus air temperature and heat stress) in order to identify existing relationships and lag effects (between meteorological condition and morbidity). Relative risk (RR) was also obtained for the two age groups during the three years. Results showed that the pandemic year disrupted observed patterns of association between analyzed variables, with either very low or non-existent correlations.

Concentration of particulate matter directly affects air quality and human health. Three sources of information were used in this work to generate datasets on this matter at the Fontibón county in Bogota D.C., Colombia. The first source was a Davis AirLinkâ low-cost sensor air quality readings for PM2.5, PM10 and meteorological variables. The sensor was installed in the referred area, collecting air quality readings for PM2.5, PM10, as well as temperature, relative humidity, dew point, wet bulb, and heat index as meteorological variables during the months of May to August 2022. The second source was collecting by direct measurement the PM10 particles using a Tischâ Hi- Vol equipment, evaluated the concentration of particulate matter PM10 in the same place for 27 days. Finally, raw data was provided by the Bogotá's Environmental District Bureau (SDA), validating in this work the data readings for the years 2021 and 2022 from the two meteorological stations located in the same county, named "Fontibón" and "Móvil Fontibón", including Air quality data for PM2.5, PM10, Carbon Monoxide (CO), Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and the meteorological variables wind speed, wind direction, temperature, precipitation, relative humidity (RH) and Barometric pressure. A Machine Learning model was made to perform the mining and completeness of the missing data with an iterative imputation and with a regression model, and the Pearson, Spearman and Kendall correlation coefficients were calculated, using Python language.
RESUMO
The climate-health nexus is well documented in the field of biometeorology. Since its inception, Biometeorology has in many ways become the umbrella under which much of this collaborative research has been conducted. Whilst a range of review papers have considered the development of biometeorological research and its coverage in this journal, and a few have reviewed the literature on specific diseases, none have focused on the sub-field of climate and health as a whole. Since its first issue in 1957, the International Journal of Biometeorology has published a total of 2183 papers that broadly consider human health and its relationship with climate. In this review, we identify a total of 180 (8.3%, n = 2183) of these papers that specifically focus on the intersection between meteorological variables and specific, named diagnosable diseases, and explore the publication trends thereof. The number of publications on climate and health in the journal increases considerably since 2011. The largest number of publications on the topic was in 2017 (18) followed by 2021 (17). Of the 180 studies conducted, respiratory diseases accounted for 37.2% of the publications, cardiovascular disease 17%, and cerebrovascular disease 11.1%. The literature on climate and health in the journal is dominated by studies from the global North, with a particular focus on Asia and Europe. Only 2.2% and 8.3% of these studies explore empirical evidence from the African continent and South America respectively. These findings highlight the importance of continued research on climate and human health, especially in low- and lower-middle-income countries, the populations of which are more vulnerable to climate-sensitive illnesses.

There are several determinants of a population's health, including meteorological factors and air pollution. For example, it is well known that low temperatures and air pollution increase mortality rates in infant and elderly populations. With the emergence of SARS-COV-2, it is important to understand what factors contribute to its mitigation and control. There is some research in this area which shows scientific evidence on the virus's behavior in the face of these variables. This research aims to quantify the impact of climatic factors and environmental pollution on SARS-COV-2 specifically the effect on the number of new infections in different areas of Chile. At the local level, historical information available from the Department of Statistics and Health Information, the Chilean National Air Quality Information System, the Chilean Meteorological Directorate, and other databases will allow the generation of panel data suitable for the analysis. The results show the significant effect of pollution and climate variables measured in lags and will allow us to explain the behavior of the pandemic by identifying the relevant factors affecting health, using heteroskedastic models, which in turn will serve as a contribution to the generation of more effective and timely public policies for the control of the pandemic.

Successful malaria control interventions, mostly based on the training of health workers, distribution of insecticide-treated nets, and spraying, decrease malaria incidence; however, when these interventions are interrupted, a resurgence may occur. In the Peruvian Amazon, after discontinuing the control activities implemented by the PAMAFRO project (2006-2010)-a Global Fund-sponsored project for the strengthening of malaria control and surveillance in multiple countries in Latin America- malaria cases re-emerged dramatically. In parallel, meteorological factors determine the conditions suitable for the development, reproduction, and survival of mosquito vectors and parasites. This study hypothesized that interruption of malaria interventions may have modified the meteorological-malaria relationships over time (i.e., temporal changes in the dose-response between meteorological variables and malaria incidence). In this panel data analysis, we assessed the extent that relationships between meteorological variables and malaria changed temporally using data of monthly malaria incidence due to Plasmodium vivax or P. falciparum in Loreto, Peru (2000-2017). Generalized additive models were used to explore how the effects of meteorological variables changed in magnitude before, during, and after the PAMAFRO intervention. We found that once the PAMAFRO intervention had been interrupted, the estimated effects (dose-response) of meteorological variables on incidence rates decreased for both malaria parasite species. However, these fitted effect estimates did not reach their baseline levels (before the PAMAFRO period); variations of time-varying slopes between 0.45 and 2.07 times were observed after the PAMAFRO intervention. We also reported significant heterogeneity in the geographical distributions of malaria, parasite species, and meteorological variables. High malaria transmission occurred consistently in the northwestern provinces of Loreto Department. Since the end of the PAMAFRO period, a higher effect of precipitation and actual evapotranspiration was described on P. falciparum compared to P. vivax. The effect of temperature on malaria was greater over a shorter time (1-month lag or less), compared with precipitation and actual evapotranspiration (12-month lag). These findings demonstrate the importance of sustained malaria control efforts since interruption may enhance the links between meteorological factors and malaria. Our results also emphasize the importance of considering the time-varying effect of meteorological factors on malaria incidence to tailor control interventions, especially to better manage the current and future climate change crisis.
Abstract The scope of this article is to evaluate the impact of emissions from sugarcane burning on hospital admission numbers for respiratory diseases in a sugarcane region. Hospital admission records for respiratory diseases were acquired from the database of the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS) in the period from March 28, 2011 to December 28, 2012. Levels of PM10, NO2, O3, Temperature and Relative Humidity were recorded. Logistic regression models were created to analyze the association between the total number of hospitalizations, atmospheric pollutants and meteorological variables. A total of 1,179 hospitalization admissions were recorded, with a significant increase in cases of pneumonia in the burning period (p = 0.005). Likewise, it was observed that the cluster of PM10 and NO2 was influenced 67.9% (95% CI: 11.111-2.537) followed by cluster PM10, NO2, O3 and Temperature that influenced 91.1% (95% CI: 1.116; 3.271) in the total number of hospitalization admissions. During the sugarcane burning period there were more hospitalization admissions due to respiratory tract diseases, mainly pneumonia, where the influence of air pollutants and temperature in the process of illness in the population was detected.

Green spaces in urban areas can play a key role in protecting wildlife. However, the presence of wildlife in urban areas can lead to human health risks. Although the presence of the rodent species Oligoryzomys flavescens (hantavirus reservoir) has been recorded in cities of Argentina, its population dynamics in this type of habitat is still unknown. Here, we evaluated: (1) long-term spatial and temporal patterns of O. flavescens abundance and how these patterns were influenced by weather factors and (2) the seroprevalence of hantavirus and the identity of the viral lineage circulating in the population that inhabits the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, a protected area in the city of Buenos Aires. Genetic results confirmed that the pathogenic ANDES Central Lechiguanas virus is present in O. flavescens populations inhabiting this urban reserve. Abundance of O. flavescens showed interannual and seasonal fluctuations, with maximum values in winter and spring and minimum ones in summer and autumn. Summers with the highest abundances of O. flavescens were preceded by warmer winters, while winters with lower abundances were preceded by warmer summers. On the other hand, accumulated precipitations in the previous 6 months positively affected winter abundance. These results could help the authorities in charge of the green spaces of Buenos Aires to identify priority areas and times of the year for the implementation of preventive measures that minimize the contact of rodents with visitors. Such measures could be intensified when winters are warmer than normal, and summers are cooler and wetter than normal.

Thirty-seven sandfly species are listed for Argentina distributed in 14 provinces and Leishmaniasis cases extend from the north of the country to Unquillo City (Córdoba Province), but potential vectors are found further to the south. This is the first study on diversity, spatial and temporal distribution of sandflies on the outskirts of the temperate Córdoba City, and the factors that influence their presence. Migonemyia migonei, record here for Córdoba City for the first time, and the Evandromyia cortelezzii-sallesi Complex was found, also Ev. cortelezzii males were captured for the first time, these sandflies being more abundant during the warm months due to meteorological factors and the presence of blood meal sources. At least the eastern outskirts of Córdoba City, the second most important city of the country, are at risk of Leishmaniasis transmission if Leishmania spp. enters into the area due to the presence of competent vectors and adequate vertebrate hosts, in a favorable socio-economic context.

ABSTRACT The reservoir Balbina (59º 28’ 50W, 1º 53’ 25’’ S), located near the city of Manaus, Amazonas, in Central Amazônia, Brazil, is the second largest hydroelectric reservoir in an area located in the Amazon Basin. In this reservoir, CO2 measurements were performed at high frequency (10 Hz), CO2 flux with gas analyzer infrared (IRGA) coupled to a floating chamber and meteorological variables with a buoy instrumented to 2 m from the lake surface. The average CO2 concentration was 392 and 426 ppm for the day and night, respectively, and the daily average emission rate was 40.427±24.040 µmol-1.m-2.d-1. The accumulation of CO2 in the lake overnight, beyond respiration, shows to be affected by low wind speeds, waterside convection, physical processes involving high concentrations of CO2 for the surface and the presence of land breeze. The fluxes show no statistically significant difference with the meteorological variables and were considerably lower than a previous study for the same lake. However, the values are in agreement with other studies in Amazonian tropical lakes and other reservoirs.
RESUMO
This study aimed to evaluated the population fluctuation and estimate the number of Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) generations per year, based on meteorological variables in Caçador, SC, Brazil. The work was carried out in an organic apple orchard from October/2009 to April/2012. The fruit flies numbers were weekly recorded with four McPhail traps baited with Torula®. The association between the number of adults captured and meteorological variables (maximum, average and minimum temperatures, rainfall and relative humidity) was calculated using Pearsons correlation coefficient (p 0.05). In off-season crop (May to September), the daily average of the meteorological variables were evaluated calculated by F or Kruskal-Wallis tests (p 0.05). The number of generations per year was estimated based on minimum temperature from 2009 to 2012, thermal constant and basal temperature, established for A. fraterculus. The South American fruit fly occurred from November to April, with population peaks in January or February. We observed, only in 2010/2011 crop season, correlation between average number of adults captured and maximum, average and minimum temperatures. It was estimated that may occur about eight A. fraterculus generations per year in Caçador, Santa Catarina.(AU)

In Argentina, the rotavirus disease exhibits seasonal variations, being most prevalent in the fall and winter months. To deepen the understanding of rotavirus seasonality in our community, the influence of meteorological factors on the rotavirus load and the genetic diversity in urban raw sewage from Córdoba city, Argentina were evaluated. Wastewater samples were collected monthly during a three-year study period and viral particles were concentrated by polyethylene glycol precipitation. RT-nested PCR was applied for rotavirus detection, and VP7/VP4 characterization and real-time PCR for rotavirus quantification. Both molecular techniques showed relatively similar sensitivity rates and revealed rotavirus presence in urban wastewater in cold and warm seasons, indicating its circulation in the local community all year round. However, a slight trend for rotavirus circulation was noted by real-time PCR in the fall and winter seasons, showing a significantly higher peak of rotavirus concentration at mean temperatures lower than 18°C and also higher, although not statistically different during drier weather. VP7 and VP4 gene characterization showed that G1 and P[8] genotypes were dominant, and temporal variations in genotype distribution were not observed. Rotavirus spread is complex and our results point out that weather factors alone cannot explain the seasonal quantitative pattern of the rotavirus disease. Therefore, alternative transmission routes, changes in human behavior and susceptibility, and the stability and survivability of the virus might all together contribute to the seasonality of rotavirus. The results obtained here provide evidence regarding the dynamics of rotavirus circulation and maintenance in Argentina.

Measure the populations of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus adults according to sex and location insideor outside the residence, estimate Ae. aegypti female density per house and per resident, and test the association with abiotic factors. Methods: Adult mosquitoes were collected monthly with a hand net and portable electric catcher in the peridomiciliary and intradomiciliary premises of residences in an urban area with on going dengue transmission in the municipality of São Sebastião, Brazil, from February 2011 to February 2012. Results: Of the 1,320 specimens collected, 1,311 were Ae. aegypti, and nine were Ae. albopictus. A total of 653 maleand 658 female of Ae. aegypti were recorded, of which 80% were intradomiciliary. The mean density of Ae. aegypti adult females was 1.60 females/house and 0.42 females/resident. There was an association between the number offe males and the number of residents in both intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary premises (r2 = 0.92; p < 0.001 andr2 = 0.68; p < 0.001, respectively). There was an association between the number of females and the mean and total rainfall; the correlation was better in peridomiciliary premises (p = 0.00; r2 = 77%) than intradomiciliary premises in both cases (p = 0.01; r2 = 48%). Minimum temperature was associated in both environments, exhibiting the same coefficient of determination (p = 0.02; r2 = 40%). The low frequency of Ae. albopictus (seven females and two males) did not allow for detailed evaluation...

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is becoming one of the extremely common airborne and contact transmission diseases in Guangzhou, southern China, leading public health authorities to be concerned about its increased incidence. In this study, it was used an ecological study plus the negative binomial regression to identify the epidemic status of HFMD and its relationship with meteorological variables. During 2008-2012, a total of 173,524 HFMD confirmed cases were reported, 12 cases of death, yielding a fatality rate of 0.69 per 10,000. The annual incidence rates from 2008 to 2012 were 60.56, 132.44, 311.40, 402.76, and 468.59 (per 100,000), respectively, showing a rapid increasing trend. Each 1 °C rise in temperature corresponded to an increase of 9.47% (95% CI 9.36% to 9.58%) in the weekly number of HFMD cases, while a one hPa rise in atmospheric pressure corresponded to a decrease in the number of cases by 7.53% (95% CI -7.60% to -7.45%). Similarly, each one percent rise in relative humidity corresponded to an increase of 1.48% or 3.3%, and a one meter per hour rise in wind speed corresponded to an increase of 2.18% or 4.57%, in the weekly number of HFMD cases, depending on the variables considered in the model. These findings revealed that epidemic status of HFMD in Guangzhou is characterized by high morbidity but low fatality. Weather factors had a significant influence on the incidence of HFMD.

Fungal spores are distributed in large amounts in the outdoor air, andsome of them may cause diseases in human beings, animals, and plants.Among several taxa, Cladosporium spp is one of the most ubiquitous andmost widely distributed, being found in high concentrations in the air.Cladosporium spp spores have been classified as important allergens, and are, therefore, important to the study of allergies. Objectives: To measure the concentrations of Cladosporium sppspores in the outdoor air of Caxias do Sul, Southern Brazil, during 2001and 2002, and to evaluate the association of these concentrations withmeteorological parameters. Methods: Daily samples were collected using a Hirst sampler(Burkard®).Results: The results showed that Cladosporium spp spores are oftenpart of the air. In 2001, the total amount was 133,586 spores/m3; withmaximum daily and monthly concentration of 3,265 spores/m3, and24,912 spores/m3 in March, respectively. In 2002, the total amount was118,766 spores/m3; with maximum daily and monthly concentration of4,470 spores/m3 and 29,816 spores/m3 in January. The meteorologicalparameters showed a positive correlation with the temperature averageand a negative one regarding humidity. The highest levels were found athigher temperature averages, however, elevated humidity has a negativeeffect on the distribution of these spores, contributing to their hydrationand deposition on the soil. Conclusions: The data obtained can be useful in human pathologyarea - especially in allergy - animal and plants pathology, in studies ofcultural inventory preservation, infection control and ecology.

The evaluation of the influence on the exclusion of rainfall on the variation of litter production was done in Caxiuanã Forest Reserve at Ferreira Penna Scientific Station (1º 42 ' S, 51º 31 ' W) during the period from March, 2001 to February, 2003 with the objective of identifying the main meteorological variables and the main components of the monthly water balance that affected the production and decomposition of litter. This work was part of the subproject EXPERIMENT OF DROUGHT IN THE FOREST (ESECAFLOR), that aimed to study the long term impacts of drought on the water, energy and carbon dioxide fluxes in the Amazon forest. The sazonality of total litter production and its components (leaves, brushwood and reproductive parts) was well established, with the occurrence of a greater litter production during the months with lower precipitation. The monthly litter production during the experimental period ranged from 294.78 kg.ha-1 to 1758.69 kg.ha-1, with an average of 777.70 kg.ha-1. The total litter production was partitioned in leaves (61.40 %), brushwoods (18.45 %) and reproductive parts (20.14 %). The results obtained in the undisturbed plot showed a higher litter production, about 25 %, compared to the litter production in the plot under the exclusion of water. The variables more strongly correlated with litter production and its components were wind speed, global solar radiation density flux, photosynthetic active radiation density flux, soil temperature at 5 cm depth, precipitation, soil water deficit and water surplus.

An experiment was carried out to study the relationship between sweet pepper maximum evapotranspiration (ETm) per unit leaf area index (ETmf) and incident solar radiation (Rg e) and net radiation (Rn e) outside greenhouse, and with air temperature (t am), air relative humidity (URm) and water vapor pressure deficit (D) inside a greenhouse. ETm was measured by lysimeters. Temperature and relative humidity were registered whereas Rg e and Rn e were estimated. The Rn e was the variable with laRg e st effect on ETmf determination, followed by D and URm. The air temperature at 15:00 and the daily maximum temperature were variables of laRg e r association with ETmf among the variables with punctual time observations. Rg e improved its relationship with ETmf when was analyzed with different t am ranges. The results confirmed Rn e and D as the meteorological variables of highest relationship with evapotranspiration in plastic greenhouse grown crops in autumn. However, the degree of adjustment of this relationship for sweet pepper is different from those reported for other crops.
