RESUMO

Hexaflumuron has been globally registered over 2 decades to control the pests in brassicaceous vegetables, while data on its dissipation and residues in turnip and cauliflower is scarce. Herein, field trials were carried out at six representative experimental sites to study the dissipation behaviors and terminal residues of hexaflumuron in turnip and cauliflower. The residual amounts of hexaflumuron were extracted using a modified QuEChERS and analyzed with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), the chronic dietary risk to Chinese populations was evaluated, and the maximum residue limit (MRL) in cauliflower, turnip tubers, and turnip leaves was calculated by the OECD MRL calculator. The single first-order kinetics model was the best-fitted kinetics model for hexaflumuron dissipation in cauliflower. The indeterminate order rate equation and first-order multi-compartment kinetic model were the best formulae for hexaflumuron dissipation in turnip leaves. The half-lives of hexaflumuron ranged from 0.686 to 1.35 and 2.41 to 6.71 days in cauliflower and turnip leaves, respectively. The terminal residues of hexaflumuron in turnip leaves of 0.321-9.59 mg/kg were much higher than in turnip tubers of < 0.01-0.708 mg/kg and cauliflower of < 0.01-1.49 mg/kg at sampling intervals of 0, 5, 7, and 10 days. The chronic dietary risk of hexaflumuron in the preharvest interval of 7 days was lower than 100% and much higher than 0.01%, indicating acceptable but nonnegligible health hazards for Chinese consumers. Therefore, MRL values of hexaflumuron were proposed as 2, 0.8, and 10 mg/kg in cauliflower, turnip tubers, and turnip leaves, respectively.

RESUMO

The advances in genomics in recent years have increased the accuracy and efficiency of breeding programs for many crops. Nevertheless, the adoption of genomic enhancement for several other crops essential in developing countries is still limited, especially for those that do not have a reference genome. These crops are more often called orphans. This is the first report to show how the results provided by different platforms, including the use of a simulated genome, called the mock genome, can generate in population structure and genetic diversity studies, especially when the intention is to use this information to support the formation of heterotic groups, choice of testers, and genomic prediction of single crosses. For that, we used a method to assemble a reference genome to perform the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) calling without needing an external genome. Thus, we compared the analysis results using the mock genome with the standard approaches (array and genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS)). The results showed that the GBS-Mock presented similar results to the standard methods of genetic diversity studies, division of heterotic groups, the definition of testers, and genomic prediction. These results showed that a mock genome constructed from the population's intrinsic polymorphisms to perform the SNP calling is an effective alternative for conducting genomic studies of this nature in orphan crops, especially those that do not have a reference genome.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to investigate the residual behavior and safety assessment of fenazaquin and metaflumizone in butterbur. The samples were periodically harvested, extracted using QuEChERS method, and determined by LC-MS/MS. The linearity of matrix-matched calibration curve was ≥0.99 for both compounds. The average recoveries of fenazaquin and metaflumizone at two fortification levels (0.01 and 0.1 mg kg-1) ranged from 86.6 to 97.2%. The relative standard deviation was <10%. After 7 days, the fenazaquin and metaflumizone initial residues in butterbur were dissipated to 79 and 78%, with the respective half-lives, 3.08 and 3.15 days. The proposed preharvest intervals (PHIs) for fenazaquin is recommended as twice treatment 14 days before harvest and metaflumizone twice treatment 7 days before harvest of butterbur. Risk assessment showed that the acceptable daily intake of fenazaquin and metaflumizone in butterbur was 0.004 and 0.029%, respectively. The respective theoretical maximum daily intakes of fenazaquin and metaflumizone were 58.74 and 15.15%, indicating negligible risk.

RESUMO

MAIN CONCLUSION: Due to significant contributions of orphan crops in the economy of the developing world, scientific studies need to be promoted on these little researched but vital crops of smallholder farmers and consumers. Food security is the main challenge in the developing world, particularly in the least developed countries. Orphan crops play a vital role in the food security and livelihood of resource-poor farmers and consumers in these countries. Like major crops, there are members of all food types-cereals, legumes, vegetables and root and tuber crops, that are considered to be orphan crops. Despite their huge importance for present and future agriculture, orphan crops have generally received little attention by the global scientific community. Due to this, they produce inferior yields in terms of both quantity and quality. The major bottlenecks affecting the productivity of these crops are little or no selection of improved genetic traits, extreme environmental conditions and unfavorable policy. However, some orphan crops have recently received the attention of the global and national scientific community where advanced research and development initiatives have been launched. These initiatives which implement a variety of genetic and genomic tools targeted major constraints affecting productivity and/or nutritional quality of orphan crops. In this paper, some of these initiatives are briefly described. Here, I provide key suggestions to relevant stakeholders regarding improvement of orphan crops. Concerted efforts are urgently needed to advance the research and development of both the major and orphan crops so that food security will be achieved and ultimately the livelihood of the population will be improved.

RESUMO

The pepper-fruit-borer Symmetrischema dulce Povolny (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is an important chili pepper pest causing significant yield losses. However, chili pepper has insufficient crop protection support and primary information about S. dulce is scarce. In the present study, we aimed to study the biology and ecology of S. dulce in pepper plants (Capsicum frutescens L.) focusing to support integrated pest management programs. In the field, we sampled ripe and unripe chili pepper fruits in three different plant strata. In the laboratory, we established colonies of the S. dulce and we recorded the duration, viability, morphology of each life stage, and number of larval instars. We conducted experiments to evaluate insect reproduction, whereby we registered the pre-oviposition and oviposition period, daily oviposition rate, and sex ratio. From these results, we estimated the reproductive success of S. dulce through the intrinsic population growth rate. The higher occurrence of S. dulce was in unripe fruits with no difference between plant strata. Egg stage lasted 4 days with 94% viability, and larval phase lasted on average 10.72 days and presented four instars with viability of 66.6%. Pupal stage lasted 9.61 days with viability of 94.73%. The adult stage lasted 24.14 days with a pre-oviposition period of 3 days and oviposition period of 13.85 days. The intrinsic growth rate (rm) recorded was 0.0035. Our results suggest that the biology of S. dulce has similarities with other Lepidoptera, but its peculiarities in reproductive parameters are essential for future programs of pest management.

RESUMO

Nowadays, the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicinal materials is faced with the problems of pesticides illegal uses and pesticides residues. In the early period of eco-agriculture of Chinese materia medica, the uses of pesticides in special time is still inevitable. However, the registration of pesticides for Chinese medicinal materials now is far from enough to meet demand. So it is necessary to publish policies to expand the pesticides registration for Chinese medicinal materials. We collected and analyzed the data of pesticide registration for Chinese medicinal materials, the results showed that till March 2018, there were 10 kinds of Chinese medicinal materials, 91 pesticide products and 46 kinds of pesticide ingredients registered. Based on the current status of the pesticide management in China and the experience of the registration pesticide for minor crops in countries around the world, we point out that the pesticide registration for Chinese medicinal materials should be carried out in the form of minor crops and some specific methods are also provided in this paper.

RESUMO

Currently, European farmers do not have access to sufficient numbers and diversity of crop species/varieties. This prevents them from designing cropping systems more resilient to abiotic and biotic stresses. Crop diversification is a key lever to reduce pest (pathogens, animal pests and weeds) pressures at all spatial levels from fields to landscapes. In this context, plant breeding should consist of: (1) increased efforts in the development of new or minor crop varieties to foster diversity in cropping systems, and (2) focus on more resilient varieties showing local adaptation. This new breeding paradigm, called here 'breeding for integrated pest management (IPM)', may boost IPM through the development of cultivars with tolerance or resistance to key pests, with the goal of reducing reliance on conventional pesticides. At the same time, this paradigm has legal and practical implications for future breeding programs, including those targeting sustainable agricultural systems. By putting these issues into the context, this article presents the key outcomes of a questionnaire survey and experts' views expressed during an EU workshop entitled 'Breeding for IPM in sustainable agricultural systems'. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Wild food plants (WFP) have always been consumed by humans, first as the main basis of their food and, since the origins of agriculture, as ingredients of normal diets or as an alternative during situations of scarcity. In contemporary industrialized societies their use is for the most part being abandoned, but they may still play an important role. With the purpose of advancing in the ethnobotanical knowledge of one region of the Catalan Pyrenees, the present study reports the findings of a research project conducted in the Ripollès district (Catalonia, Iberian Peninsula), concerning ethnobotanical knowledge and use of wild and semi-wild vascular plants as foods, along with minor crops. METHODS: From August 2004 to July 2014, we performed 104 interviews (93 of which yielded data on food plants) with 163 informants, using the method of semi-structured ethnobotanical interview. We identified the plants quoted and kept herbarium vouchers. RESULTS: We detected 967 use reports for 80 wild or naturalized taxa, which are or have been consumed in the Ripollès district, the most cited being Taraxacum dissectum, Cynara cardunculus and Origanum vulgare. Certain frequently reported species such as Molopospermum peloponnesiacum and Taraxacum dissectum have only been rarely cited previously or indicated as food plant in very restricted geographical areas. Most cited families included Asteraceae and Lamiaceae, followed by Rosaceae and Apiaceae. Preferred consumed plant parts included leaves, followed by aerial parts, along with fruits and infructescences, while most wild food plants are eaten raw or used as condiments. Demographic factors such as age and locality of informants seem to be more relevant to wild food plant knowledge than gender. Middle-aged people and inhabitants from the Higher Freser River Valley seem to have a greater knowledge of WFP, both in relation to the number of species elicited, as well as the diversity of uses and preparations. To a lesser degree, women seem to have a slightly higher WFP knowledge than men. The consumption of these resources is still fairly alive amongst the populace, yet changes affecting younger generations-in most cases abandonment-have been reported by various participants. CONCLUSION: The information provided by this kind of research permits the detection of those traditional species that could constitute the basis for the future development and management of wild edible plant resources along with minor crops. It also helps to determine the factors affecting their use, as well as the distinct target groups that such programmes could be addressed to.

RESUMO

Two-step dispersive-solid phase extraction strategy for the cleanup of QuEChERS extracts in multiresidue analysis of current-use pesticides in a chlorophyll-containing matrix was evaluated and is reported for the first time. The proposed approach combines two sequential steps of dispersive-solid phase extraction (d-SPE) to reduce matrix co-extractives. In the first step, primary secondary amine (PSA) together with a new type of sorbent, known as ChloroFiltr, was employed. This was followed by a second step of d-SPE using octadecyl (C18) and graphitized carbon black (GCB). Also, new zirconium dioxide-based sorbents (Z-Sep+ and Z-Sep/C18) were evaluated but the use of GCB/C18 provided the highest pesticide coverage with recoveries in the range of 70-120% from spiked green soybean samples. The final extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The overall recoveries at three spiking levels of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.2 mg kg(-1) were 96±15%, 93±13% and 92±13% with relative standard deviations of 10±7%, 9±5%, and 11±5%, respectively. The proposed method provided matrix effect <20% for 77% of the target compounds, which may be considered as negligible because such variability is closed to the accepted repeatability. For the rest of 8 and 15% of the compounds, the matrix effect was 20-30% and >30%, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to study dissipation patterns of pesticides applied to soybean in experimental plot trials, thus contributing to establish safe and proper use of pesticides by extension of authorization on minor crops in Poland.

RESUMO

A method was developed for pesticide analysis in samples of high chlorophyll content belonging to the group of minor crops. A new type of sorbent, known as ChloroFiltr, was employed for dispersive-solid phase extraction cleanup (dispersive-SPE) to reduce the unwanted matrix background prior to concurrent analysis by gas chromatography and ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS and UPLC-MS/MS). Validation experiments were carried out on green, unripe plants of lupin, white mustard and sorghum. The overall recoveries at the three spiking levels of 0.01, 0.05 and 0.5 mg kg(-1) fell in the range between 68 and 120% (98% on average) and 72-104% (93% on average) with relative standard deviation (RSD) values between 2 and 19% (7% on average) and 3-16% (6% on average) by GC-MS/MS and UPLC-MS/MS technique, respectively. Because of strong enhancement or suppression matrix effects (absolute values >20%) which were exhibited by about 80% of the pesticide and matrix combinations, acceptably accurate quantification was achieved by using matrix-matched standards. Up to now, the proposed method has been successfully used to study the dissipation patterns of pesticides after application on lupin, white mustard, soya bean, sunflower and field bean in experimental plot trials conducted in Poland.

RESUMO

The Food Quality Protection Act mandates new considerations in pesticide regulatory decisions. Endocrine disruption, determination of the need for an additional safety factor for infants and children, aggregate exposure to each pesticide, and cumulative exposure to pesticides with a common mechanism of toxicity will all become part of the risk assessment process. A reduction in availability of fungicides for many current uses appears to be a likely result of this act. If this occurs, disease management programs, particularly in fruits and vegetables, will be challenged to find alternative approaches. Currently, fungicides play an important role in many production systems. Loss of these valuable pest management tools will contribute to increased costs for producers and consumers, as well as to complex issues facing the structure of agriculture in the United States.
