RESUMO

Recent societal and technological developments have led to new sources of contamination, particularly from electronic waste (e-waste). The rapid increase in e-waste, combined with inadequate disposal and recycling practices has resulted in rising levels of hazardous substances in aquatic systems, including rare-earth elements (REEs). However, the effects of REEs on aquatic organisms remain poorly understood. This lack of understanding is concerning since REEs can simultaneously appear in aquatic systems. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the impacts of Y, La, and Gd, individually and as mixtures on the mussel species Mytilus galloprovincialis. Biomarkers related to metabolism, energy reserves, defence enzymes, redox balance, cellular damage and neurotoxicity were analyzed. The results obtained showed that yttrium alone caused minimal stress, while gadolinium, lanthanum, and their mixtures induced moderate to severe stress, increased metabolic activity, and enzyme responses. This study highlights the ecological impacts of rare earth element (REE) mixtures on aquatic organisms. The complex interactions and additive effects, especially with gadolinium, underline the need for further research on contaminant mixtures.

RESUMO

The growth and development of phytoplankton are influenced by physico-chemical parameters, which can also affect the spatial distribution of phytoplankton community structure. However, it is unclear whether environmental heterogeneity caused by multiple physico-chemical factors can affect the spatial distribution of phytoplankton and its functional groups. In this study, we investigated the seasonal variation and spatial distribution of phytoplankton community structure and its relationships with environmental factors in Lake Chaohu from August 2020 to July 2021. We recorded a total of 190 species from 8 phyla, which were divided into 30 functional groups, including 13 dominating functional groups. The average annual phytoplankton density and biomass were (5.46 ± 7.17) × 107 cells/L and 4.80 ± 4.61 mg/L, respectively. The density and biomass of phytoplankton were higher in summer ((14.64 ± 20.34) × 107 cells/L, 10.61 ± 13.16 mg/L) and autumn ((6.79 ± 3.97) × 107 cells/L, 5.57 ± 2.40 mg/L), with the M and H2 of dominant functional groups. The dominant functional groups were N, C, D, J, MP, H2, and M in spring, whereas functional groups C, N, T, and Y dominated in winter. The distribution of phytoplankton community structure and dominant functional groups exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity in the lake, which was consistent with the environmental heterogeneity of the lake and could be classified into four locations. Location I had higher phytoplankton density and biomass than the other three locations. Additionally, dominant functional groups M, C, and H2 were present throughout the lake, and all 13 dominant functional groups were observed in Location II. Our findings suggest that environmental heterogeneity is a key factor influencing the spatial distribution of phytoplankton functional groups in Lake Chaohu.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate disease pattern clusters and co-occurrences of oral signs and symptoms in a Colombian population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out through a telephone survey amongst 1155 people registered in the telephone directory from Pasto, Colombia. The calls were made from July to November 2019. A 14-item self-report questionnaire about signs and symptoms related to oral diseases that included sociodemographic characteristics was employed. Descriptive and multivariable analyses such as hierarchical clustering, multidimensional scaling, and generalized linear models were used to determine co-occurrences in different sex and age strata. RESULTS: Age- and condition-specific clusters of signs and symptoms were identified, while sex differences were limited. Calculus and denture sore mouth were related in 18- to 34-year-olds; tooth loss and calculus in 35- to 54-year-olds, and teeth holes or pits (dental caries) and dental abscess in those aged 55 years and older. We found stronger associations between periodontal disease (bleeding gums) and dental caries (odds ratio [OR], 2.484; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.812-3.405; P < .001) as well as grinding/clenching and facial tension (OR, 7.162; 95% CI, 5.227-9.814; P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Age-specific clustering of signs and symptoms and diagnostic patterns wer present in ths Colombian cohort.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the genetic polymorphism of InDel loci in SifalnDel 45plex system in the Han population in Jiangsu Province and the Mongolian population in Inner Mongolia, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in forensic medicine. METHODS: SifaInDel 45plex system was used for genotyping in blood samples of 398 unrelated individuals from the above two populations, and allele frequencies and population genetic parameters of the two populations were calculated respectively. Eight intercontinental populations in the gnomAD database were used as reference populations. The genetic distances between the two studied populations and eight reference populations were calculated based on the allele frequencies of 27 autosomal-InDels (A-InDels). The phylogenetic trees and multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis diagrams were constructed accordingly. RESULTS: Among two studied populations, the 27 A-InDels and 16 X-InDels showed no linkage disequilibrium between each other and the allele frequency distributions were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The CDP of the 27 A-InDels in two studied populations were all higher than 0.999 999 999 9, and the CPEtrio were all less than 0.999 9. The CDP of the 16 X-InDels in Han in Jiangsu and Mongolian in Inner Mongolia female and male samples were 0.999 997 962, 0.999 998 389, and 0.999 818 940, 0.999 856 063, respectively. The CMECtrio were all less than 0.999 9. The results of population genetics showed that the Jiangsu Han nationality, Inner Mongolia Mongolian nationality and East Asian population clustered into one branch, showing closer genetic relationship. The other 7 intercontinental populations clustered into another group. And the above 3 populations displayed distant genetic relationships with the other 7 intercontinental populations. CONCLUSIONS: The InDels in the SifaInDel 45plex system have good genetic polymorphism in the two studied populations, which can be used for forensic individual identification or as an effective complement for paternity identification, and to distinguish different intercontinental populations.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Absolute muscle strength or adjusted by body mass index (BMI) are useful to identify sarcopenia. However, these values are not accurate for older adults with extreme body sizes because the nonlinear relationship between strength and body size. The purpose was to determine cut-off points for identify sarcopenia in older adults using allometric coefficients to normalise handgrip strength (HGS) and 30-sec chair stand test (30-s CST) by body size. Allometric exponents were proposed with log-linear models for body-size variables (body mass, height and BMI). The remotion of body-size effect on muscle strength with allometric normalisation was tested by partial correlation. Cut-off points for low muscle strength were established by ROC curve and Youden index considering functional limitation (six-minute walk test<400m). Allometric exponents provided for body-size variables range from -0.01 to 2.28 (HGS) and -0.27 to 0.21 (30-s CST). The effect of body size on muscle strength was removed with allometric normalisation (r<0.30). Cut-off points accuracy was always adequate (AUC≥0.78; p<0.001). In conclusion, cut-off points of HGS and 30-s CST allometrically normalised were proposed to identify sarcopenia in Portuguese older adults and allometry maintained adequate the accuracy (AUC>70%). Allometry removed influence of body size on the expression of HGS and 30-s CST and permits evaluate muscle strength regardless of body-size.

The first month of lactation is a vulnerable nutritional period for the mother. Our aims were (1) to evaluate the nutritional status of breastfeeding women in the first month of lactation, and (2) to explore different aspects of nutrition and lifestyle through a multidimensional approach. A total of 30 healthy breastfeeding women were enrolled in this study. Dietary pattern was assessed through a 72-hour dietary recall questionnaire (days 7 and 28 postpartum) and data were compared with Dietary Recommendation Values (DRV), and through the Adherence to Healthy Food Pyramid (HFP) questionnaire (day 28). Anthropometric parameters were evaluated by bioimpedance. Using factor analysis, nutritional dimensions were extracted, and linear regression models were used to analyze the association between anthropometric parameters and dimensions. Compared to the DRV, women showed insufficient energy, water, vitamin D, and potassium intake and excessive proteins, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, and iron intake. We observed a moderate adherence to the HFP, with women being high in the fruits, vegetables, and oil categories, and low adherence to the physical activity, dairy products, and hydration categories. The nutritional dimension, including the HFP categories of physical activity, hydration, and animal protein intake together, was negatively associated with body weight (ß = -3.7 ± 1.7; p-value = 0.047). In conclusion, during the first month postpartum, breastfeeding women exhibited several nutritional imbalances and poor physical activity negatively influencing anthropometric parameters. We propose a multidimensional approach to assess the nutritional status of breastfeeding women as a tool to detect specific deficiencies, allowing for personalized counseling.

RESUMO

MocR bacterial transcriptional regulators are a subfamily within the GntR family. The MocR proteins possess an N-terminal domain containing the winged Helix-Turn-Helix (wHTH) motif and a C-terminal domain whose architecture is homologous to the fold type-I pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) dependent enzymes and whose archetypical protein is aspartate aminotransferase (AAT). The ancestor of the fold type-I PLP dependent super-family is considered one of the earliest enzymes. The members of this super-family are the product of evolution which resulted in a diversified protein population able to catalyze a set of reactions on substrates often containing amino groups. The MocR regulators are activators or repressors of gene control within many metabolic pathways often involving PLP enzymes. This diversity implies that MocR specifically responds to different classes of effector molecules. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the AAT domains of MocR from six bacteria phyla. Multi dimensional scaling and cluster analyses suggested that at least three subgroups exist within the population that reflects functional specialization rather than taxonomic origin. The AAT-domains of the three clusters display variable degree of similarity to different fold type-I PLP enzyme families. The results support the hypothesis that independent fusion events generated at least three different MocR subgroups.

RESUMO

Men and women worked with 25 naturalistic photos of females representing varied physiques. Similarity judgments of the photos were analyzed using multidimensional scaling analysis to produce composite maps for male and female participants. A comparison of the maps showed gender similarities and differences. Both genders used almost identical attributes in judging similarities and identified almost identical body types, but men were more inclusive in identifying ideal females; men included curvaceous females that were rejected by women. Women identified very thin females that were rejected by men. Men were affectively most positive toward female ideals; women were most positive to near-ideals.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The Pressure Ulcer is a recognised healthcare adverse event and a public health problem. The main goal in this work was to understand the status of the Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer (HAPU) from the public hospitals of the Valencian Community before (2012) and during the process of implementation of a specific prevention and treatment Practice Guideline for this matter (2013-2015). METHODS: Retrospective study through the Minimum Basic Hospital Data Set (MBDS), and taking its variables as the input. The database had 15.594 cases of hospitalization with 71 variables. The tools utilized were classical statistical analysis, Multidimensional Scaling Analysis (MDS) and Self-Organized Maps (SOM). RESULTS: The 90,83% of the admission in hospitals related to pressure ulcer treatment were admitted for a different reason than pressure ulcer itself and acquire it at the hospital. In relation to those Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer (HAPU) a temporal pattern was discovered, in a six-month cycle decreasing in August and September and increasing at the beginning of the year. The five main diagnoses associated to the HAPU had been detected and remain stable all over the study. A hospital classification has been done related to their behaviour based on its admissions as well, retrieving four types of behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: The MBDS proves to be a useful tool to retrieve a general overview of HAPU and identifying the risk patient profile where prevention strategies have to be strengthened.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to reveal research hotspots in the field of regional health information networks (RHINs) and use visualization techniques to explore their evolution over time and differences between countries. METHODS: We conducted a literature review for a 50-year period and compared the prevalence of certain index terms during the periods 1963-1993 and 1994-2014 and in six countries. We applied keyword frequency analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, multidimensional scaling analysis, and network visualization technology. RESULTS: The total number of keywords was found to increase with time. From 1994 to 2014, the research priorities shifted from hospital planning to community health planning. The number of keywords reflecting information-based research increased. The density of the knowledge network increased significantly, and partial keywords condensed into knowledge groups. All six countries focus on keywords including Information Systems; Telemedicine; Information Service; Medical Records Systems, Computerized; Internet; etc.; however, the level of development and some research priorities are different. CONCLUSIONS: RHIN research has generally increased in popularity over the past 50 years. The research hotspots are evolving and are at different levels of development in different countries. Knowledge network mapping and perceptual maps provide useful information for scholars, managers, and policy-makers.

RESUMO

The distribution of 17 Y-chromosome short tandem repeat (STR) loci, included in the AmpFlSTR®Yfiler™ amplification kit, were analyzed in six different samplings (N=878) from Sichuan, China. Haplotype diversity and discrimination capacity (DC) values were calculated. Pairwise Rst values were evaluated in AMOVA analysis and visualized through multidimensional scaling (MDS). A total of 547 unique haplotypes were detected. The observed haplotype diversity and discrimination capacity were 0.9995 and 0.7745, respectively. The homogeneity of Sichuan Han population was detected when microareas were analyzed. This population exhibited no significant genetic difference to both of the minorities in reference databases, Mongolian and Manchu, which had been through mass ethnic amalgamation with Sichuan Han population in history.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In this paper an automatic system to diagnose burn depths based on colour digital photographs is presented. JUSTIFICATION: There is a low success rate in the determination of burn depth for inexperienced surgeons (around 50%), which rises to the range from 64 to 76% for experienced surgeons. In order to establish the first treatment, which is crucial for the patient evolution, the determination of the burn depth is one of the main steps. As the cost of maintaining a Burn Unit is very high, it would be desirable to have an automatic system to give a first assessment in local medical centres or at the emergency, where there is a lack of specialists. METHOD: To this aim a psychophysical experiment to determine the physical characteristics that physicians employ to diagnose a burn depth is described. A Multidimensional Scaling Analysis (MDS) is then applied to the data obtained from the experiment in order to identify these physical features. Subsequently, these characteristics are translated into mathematical features. Finally, via a classifier (Support Vector Machine) and a feature selection method, the discriminant power of these mathematical features to distinguish among burn depths is analysed, and the subset of features that better estimates the burn depth is selected. RESULTS: A success rate of 79.73% was obtained when burns were classified as those which needed grafts and those which did not. CONCLUSIONS: Results validate the ability of the features extracted from the psychophysical experiment to classify burns into their depths.

RESUMO

The objective is to identify the spatial and temporal variability of the hydrochemical quality of the water column in a subtropical coastal system, Daya Bay, China. Water samples were collected in four seasons at 12 monitoring sites. The Southeast Asian monsoons, northeasterly from October to the next April and southwesterly from May to September have also an important influence on water quality in Daya Bay. In the spatial pattern, two groups have been identified, with the help of multidimensional scaling analysis and cluster analysis. Cluster I consisted of the sites S3, S8, S10 and S11 in the west and north coastal parts of Daya Bay. Cluster I is mainly related to anthropogenic activities such as fish-farming. Cluster II consisted of the rest of the stations in the center, east and south parts of Daya Bay. Cluster II is mainly related to seawater exchange from South China Sea.

RESUMO

A 3-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism in intron 6 of GSTM3 (rs1799735, GSTM3*A/*B) affects the activity of the phase 2 xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme GSTM3 and has been associated with increased cancer risk. The GSTM3*B allele is rare or absent in Southeast Asians, occurs in 5-20 percent of Europeans but was detected in 80 percent of Bantu from South Africa. The wide genetic diversity among Africans led us to investigate whether the high frequency of GSTM3*B prevailed in other sub-Saharan African populations. In 168 healthy individuals from Angola, Mozambique and the São Tomé e Príncipe islands, the GSTM3*B allele was three times more frequent (0.74-0.78) than the GSTM3*A allele (0.22-0.26), with no significant differences in allele frequency across the three groups. We combined these data with previously published results to carry out a multidimensional scaling analysis, which provided a visualization of the worldwide population affinities based on the GSTM3 *A/*B polymorphism.
