In order to cope with the limited supply of feed for global animal production, there is a pressing need to explore alternative feed resources. Orange pulp, a by-product of agriculture and industry, has shown potential to positively or neutrally impact pig productive performance when included in their diet. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of fermented navel orange pulp (FNOP) on pig growth and productive performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of FNOP as a dry matter substitute on pig's growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, meat nutritional value, and serum biochemical indicators. The experiment involved 128 finishing Tibetan pigs, divided into four feed treatment groups, with varying levels (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%) of FNOP replacing dry matter in the basal diet. The results indicate that substituting 5% to 15% FNOP had no adverse effects on pig growth performance. However, at a 15% substitution rate, there was a decrease in serum growth hormone and IGF-1 levels, along with an increase in the feed-to-gain ratio. A 10% FNOP replacement notably increased the loin-eye muscle area of pigs. Additionally, 5% and 10% FNOP substitutions reduced the drip loss of pork. The study also found that substituting 5% to 15% FNOP increased unsaturated fatty acids and umami nucleotide contents in pork and raised serum total protein and uric acid (nucleotide-metabolism-related product) levels. These findings suggest that moderate FNOP substitution might improve meat quality, nutritional value, and maintain growth and productive performance in Tibetan pigs by improving protein synthesis and nucleotide metabolism, while also reducing feed costs. The optimal substitution ratio identified was 10%.

BACKGROUND: Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is a particular type of breast cancer with the highest mortality rate. Essential oils are concerned more and more as potential anti-cancer drugs. METHODS: TNBC cells were treated with different concentrations of navel orange peel essential oil (NOPEO), and then a variety of  experiments were performed to investigate the changes in the growth and progression of TNBC cells. MTT assay was performed to detect the proliferation of TNBC cells. The changes of cell cycle and apoptosis were analyzed by FACS. In order to explored the migration of TNBC cells, scratch wound assay was carried out. Western blotting and qPCR were used to examine the expression of proteins and mRNA of related genes. Furthermore, RNA-seq was used to analyze the altered genes and explored the possible signal pathway. RESULTS: NOPEO demonstrated dose- and time-dependent suppression of TNBC cell growth. TNBC cells showed an increased percentage of G2/M-phase cells and the protein levels of CyclinB1 and CyclinD1 were decreased after NOPEO treatment. The apoptotic cells were increased in the NOPEO treated TNBC cells. The migration mobility was significantly inhibited by NOPEO. In total, 1376 genes were found to be up-regulated and 1335 genes were down-regulated after NOPEO treatment. According to KEGG and GO pathways, the differentially expressed genes were related to MAPK, Jak/stat and FoxQ signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: This investigation explored the bio-activity and molecular mechanisms of NOPEO against TNBC cells. These results indicated that NOPEO could suppress TNBC growth and migration perhaps via the MAPK and Jak/stat signaling pathways, which may provide theoretical reference for anticancer drug development. NOPEO may be a potential natural product for the chemotherapeutic of TNBC.

Simultaneous inoculation of non-Saccharomyces cerevisiae during the alcoholic fermentation process has been found to be an effective strategy for enhancing wine flavor. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Torulaspora delbrueckii NCUF305.2 on the flavor of navel orange original brandy (NOOB) using E-nose combined with HS-SPME-GC-MS. The results showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the sensitivity of NOOB to W5C, W3C, W1S, and W3S sensors by mixed fermentation (MF). Esters in NOOB increased by 4.13%, while higher alcohols increased by 21.93% (p < 0.001), terpenes and others increased by 52.07% and 40.99% (p < 0.01), respectively. Notably, several important volatile compounds with relative odor activity values above 10 showed an increase. Sensory analysis revealed that a more pronounced citrus-like flavor and higher overall appearance scores were found in MF than in pure fermentation (PF). These findings offer valuable theoretical guidance for enhancing the quality of fruit brandies.

To date, there has been limited research on the interactive effects of yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the sensory qualities of navel orange wine. In this study, using Jintang navel orange juice as the raw material, multi-microbial fermentation was conducted with Saccharomyces cerevisiae SC-125 and Angel yeast SY, as well as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BC114. Single yeast and co-fermentation with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum were used as the control groups. The research aimed to investigate the physicochemical parameters of navel orange wine during fermentation. Additionally, headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HP-SPME-GC-MS) was employed to determine and analyze the types and levels of flavor compounds in the navel orange wines produced through the different fermentation methods. The co-fermentation using the three strains significantly enhanced both the quantity and variety of volatile compounds in the navel orange wine, concomitant with heightened total phenol and flavonoid levels. Furthermore, a notable improvement was observed in the free radical scavenging activity. A sensory evaluation was carried out to analyze the differences among the various navel orange wines, shedding light on the impact of different wine yeasts and co-fermentation with LAB on the quality of navel orange wines.

Background: The umbilicus is a fibrous remnant located in the centre of the abdomen. Various entities may be encountered in this special anatomical location; however, little is known about their dermoscopic presentation. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive summary of existing evidence on dermoscopic features of umbilical lesions. Methods: Studies assessing dermoscopic images of umbilical lesions were included in this study. No age, ethnicity or skin phototype restrictions were applied. Papers assessing lesions outside of the umbilical area, lacking dermoscopic images and/or dermoscopic description and not related to the topic were excluded. Embase, Medline and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to the end of May 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools were used to evaluate the risk of bias of the selected studies. The quality and the level of evidence of included studies were assessed according to the Oxford 2011 Levels of Evidence. Thirty-four studies reporting a total of 39 lesions met the inclusion criteria and were included in qualitative analysis. Results: A qualitative synthesis of the following entities was performed: melanoma, nevi, basal cell carcinoma, fibroepithelioma of Pinkus, Sister Mary Joseph nodule, mycosis fungoides, dermatofibroma, endometriosis, epidermal cyst, granuloma, intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia, lichen planus, omphalolith, seborrheic keratosis, and syringoma. Conclusions: Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique that may be useful in the differential diagnosis of umbilical lesions. The main limitations of this study were lack of a high level of evidence in the studies and the lack of uniformity in applied dermoscopic terminology between included studies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of Jianpiwenyang Gel (SSWYG) for treating chronic diarrhea and explore its therapeutic mechanism. METHODS: Eighty patients with chronic diarrhea of spleen and stomach weakness type were randomized into two groups for interventions with lifestyle adjustment and treatment with bifid triple viable capsules (control group, n=40) or naval application with SSWYG (treatment group, n=40) for one week, after which symptoms of chronic diarrhea were evaluated. The Chinese medicine system pharmacology analysis platform (TCMSP), GeneCards, NCBI, OMIM database and GEO database (GSE14841) were used to obtain the active ingredients and target proteins of SSWYG and chronic diarrhea-related targets. The key targets were obtained by topological analysis for Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG analyses. The affinity and binding characteristics of SSWYG for specific targets were verified by molecular docking using AutoDock software. RESULTS: In both groups, gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS), Bristol Scale and TCM syndrome scores significantly improved after the treatments (P < 0.05), and better effects were observed in the treatment group (P < 0.05). Sixtyeight targets of SSWYG in treating chronic diarrhea were obtained, and 33 most probable ones were screened out by topological analysis. GO and KEGG analyses identified several chronic diarrhea-related pathways including the TNF and IL-17 pathways. Molecular docking study showed good affinity of the core components of SSWYG for the key targets CASP3, JNK, IL1B, IL6, and AKT1. JUN and CASP3 had the lowest binding energy and the highest stable binding energy with multiple major active ingredients of SSWYG. CONCLUSION: SSWYG can significantly improve clinical symptoms of chronic diarrhea possibly by regulating the TNF and IL-17 as well as other pathways via CASP3 and JUN, suggesting a complex therapeutic mechanism of SSWYG involving multiple ingredients and targets and coordinated regulation of multiple pathways.

The packaging problem with petroleum-based synthetic polymers prompts the development of edible packaging films. The high value-added reuse of navel orange peel pomace, which is rich in bioactive compounds, merited more considerations. Herein, nanocellulose (ONCC) and soluble dietary fiber (OSDF) from navel orange peel pomace are firstly used to prepare dietary fiber-based edible packaging films using a simple physical blend method, and the impact of ONCC on the film's properties is analyzed. Adopting three methods in a step-by-step approach to find the best formula for edible packaging films. The results show that dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films with 4 wt.% ONCC form a network structure, and their crystallinity, maximum pyrolysis temperature, and melting temperature are improved. What's more, dietary-fiber-based edible packaging films have a wide range of potential uses in edible packaging.

'Zong Cheng' navel orange (ZC) is a brown mutant of Lane Late navel orange (LL) and emits a more pleasant odor than that of LL. However, the key volatile compound of this aroma and underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, sensory evaluations and volatile profiling were performed throughout fruit development to identify significant differences in sensory perception and metabolites between LL and ZC. It revealed that the sesquiterpene content varied significantly between ZC and LL. Based on aroma extract dilution and gas chromatography-olfactometry analyses, the volatile compound leading to the background aroma of LL and ZC is d-limonene, the orange note in LL was mainly attributed to octanal, whilst valencene, ß-myrcene, and (E)-ß-ocimene presented balsamic, sweet, and herb notes in ZC. Furthermore, Cs5g12900 and six potential transcription factors were identified as responsible for valencene accumulation in ZC, which is important for enhancing the aroma of ZC.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neoumbilicoplasty aims to reconstruct an aesthetically pleasing new umbilicus following agenesis, malignancy, anatomical distortion, or umbilicus loss. Despite the wide variety of surgical techniques described, literature is scarce when it comes to standardized categorization of these as well as the clear definition of patients' selections, specific indications, final outcomes, and possible complications. According to available literature, this work aims to evaluate different surgical approaches, and correlate them to specific surgical needs, to simplify the surgical choice and patient management. METHODS: A systematic review was performed in December 2020 in PubMed, Web of Science, and MedLine Ovid databases according to the PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 41 studies and 588 patients were finally included. On the basis of the evidence of the literature collected, we divided the studies into four groups according to the neoumbilicoplasty techniques: single suture or purse-string suture, single flap, multiple flap, and skin graft. Patients' surgical comorbidities, neoumbilicoplasty indications, and aesthetic and surgical outcomes were investigated. Direct suture and single and multiple flap techniques assured overall, satisfactory cosmetic outcomes with a low rate of surgical complications. Whereas suture-only techniques were chosen mostly by general surgeons/urologists in laparoscopic surgery, the single flap was the preferred method to reconstruct the umbilicus in open abdominal surgery or combined abdominoplasty with herniorrhaphy. Multiple flap and skin grafts were adopted in abdominoplasty-related umbilicus reconstruction, although the latter option showed impactful aesthetic and surgical complications. CONCLUSIONS: Umbilicoplasty can assure generally pleasant aesthetic outcomes with relatively low complication rates. Indications for specific techniques correspond to different patient populations and surgical scenarios.

Navel orange cv. Gannanzao is a variant of the navel orange cv. Newhall (Citrus sinensis Osbeck cv. Newhall) that exhibits an earlier maturation, making it commercially valuable. However, the mechanisms underlying its early maturation remain obscure. To address this question, we conducted genome sequencing and de novo assembly of navel orange cv. Gannanzao. The assembled genome sequence is 334.57 Mb in length with a GC content of 31.48%. It comprises 318 contigs (N50 = 3.23 Mb) and 187 scaffolds (N50 = 31.86 Mb). The Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs test demonstrates 94.6% completeness. The annotation revealed 23,037 gene models, 164.95 Mb of repetitive sequences, and 2,554 noncoding RNAs. A comparative analysis identified 323 fruit ripening-related genes in navel orange cv. Gannanzao genome, while navel orange cv. Newhall genome contained 345 such genes. These genes were organized into 320 orthologous gene families, with 30.3% of them exhibiting differences in gene copy numbers between the 2 genomes. Additionally, we identified 15 fruit ripening-related genes that have undergone adaptive evolution, suggesting their potential role in advancing fruit maturation in navel orange cv. Gannanzao. Whole-genome sequencing and annotation of navel orange cv. Gannanzao provides a valuable resource to unravel the early maturation mechanism of citrus and enriches the genomic resources for citrus research.

Navel orange remains metabolized continuously during postharvest storage, but few studies have monitored the changes of these metabolites. Therefore, HS-SPME-GC-MS and UPLC-Q-TOF/MS were used to comprehensively investigate the dynamic changes of the components of Gannan navel orange during storage at room temperature. A total of 62 volatile components and 68 non-volatile components were identified. Principal Component Analysis and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis showed that navel orange under different storage periods were clearly distinguished. Combined with VIP > 1 and p < 0.05, 19 volatile and 27 non-volatile differential metabolites were obtained. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that flavonoid biosynthesis (map00941) was the primary metabolic pathway. The middle storage period had a higher antioxidant enzyme activity, but the malondialdehyde content was the opposite. These results reveal the changes of postharvest components of Gannan navel orange, providing a theoretical basis for the storage and product development of navel orange.

The ripe Gannan navel oranges have an appealing aroma, but few studies have reported the changes of these aromatic substances during the growth of navel oranges. In this study, changes of aroma components in Gannan navel orange from 119 to 245 days after flowering were systematically studied using headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) coupled with multivariate analysis, including principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). A total of 43 and 54 aroma components were identified in pulp and peel of navel orange, respectively. The odor active value (OAV) results indicated that 14 substances were the key aroma components during the growth of navel orange. Among them, the contribution of linalool, ß-myrcene and limonene were the highest. The multivariate statistical analysis further confirmed that 14 and 18 compounds could be used as key markers to distinguish the pulp and peel at different growth stages, respectively. Results from this study contributed to a better understanding of the dynamic variation and retention of aroma compounds during navel orange growth, and have great potential for industrial application.

BACKGROUND: 60 Co-γ irradiation can simulate the effects of aging and enhance the flavor of distilled spirits. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 kGy 60 Co-γ irradiation doses on the key aroma components in newly produced navel orange distilled spirits and thus determine the mechanism of their aging distilled spirits. RESULTS: The identification of aroma compounds demonstrated that ethyl hexanoate, d-limonene, ethyl octanoate, 3-methyl-1-butanol and linalool are the key aroma compounds in navel orange distilled spirits, which were increased except for linalool with irradiation doses of 2-6 kGy. Irradiation treatment simulated the effects of the aging of navel orange distilled spirits by promoting the content of total acids, total esters and aldehydes. Irradiation doses of 2-6 kGy increased the aroma intensity of navel orange distilled spirits, reaching an optimum at 6 kGy. However, irradiation doses as high as 8 and 10 kGy decreased the content of esters in navel orange distilled spirits, which led to a deterioration of the spirit flavor. CONCLUSION: Low doses of 60 Co-γ irradiation can simulate the effects of the aging by increasing the content of key aromatic compounds in navel orange distilled spirits. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Newhall navel orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] is an economically important agricultural product in China. In February 2022, a rare lesion symptom was observed on Newhall navel oranges that were harvested from an orchard Ganzhou city, Jiangxi province, China (25.53° N, 114.79° E) and stored for 90 days (18±2℃, 80 to 90% RH) at the Jiangxi Key Laboratory for Postharvest Technology and Non-destructive Testing of Fruits and Vegetables (28.68° N, 115.85° E). Approximately 2% (15/750) of the oranges exhibited symptoms, with normal appearance but ink-black flesh and juice, yellowish lesions on edges of the symptoms, and no unusual odor. To isolate the pathogen, three 5 × 5 mm pieces of symptomatic tissue from a diseased orange were disinfected in 75% ethanol for 30 s, rinsed three times with sterile water, and inoculated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) at 25±1℃ and a 12:12 h photoperiod for 7 days. A pure isolate named ND-hsp was obtained. The colony was light yellow center with pale edge on the top and brown on the bottom. Conidia and pycnidia were observed on PDA medium after 2 months. Conidia were long oval, no septa, 2.9 × 3.4 µm (n = 50), and pycnidia were solitary, 39.4 × 43.9 µm (n = 20), with one or no orifice, brown to dark brown. The morphological characteristics of ND-hsp strain on PDA, oatmeal agar and malt extract agar were similar to those of the Didymellaceae (Aveskamp et al. 2010). Ulteriorly, the genomic DNA of the ND-hsp isolate was extracted from its mycelia using a fungal genomic DNA extraction kit (Solarbio, Beijing, China) for subsequent phylogenetic analyses. Four primer sets, LR0R (Rehner and Samuels 1994) /LR7 (Vilgalys and Hester 1990), V9G (Hoog and Gerrits 1998) /ITS4 (White et al. 1990), Btub2Fd/Btub4Rd (Woudenberg et al. 2009) and RPB2-5F2 (Sung et al. 2007)/RPB2-7cR (Liu et al. 1999) were used to amplify the corresponding DNA fragments of large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU), internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), beta-tubulin gene (TUB2) and RNA polymerase Ⅱ second largest subunit (RPB2), respectively. The obtained sequences were assigned GenBank accession numbers and showed 99 to 100% identity with their counterparts of Vacuiphoma oculihominis UTHSC DI16-308. A phylogenetic tree was constructed in MEGA 7.0 using the concatenated sequences, placing the isolate within the V. oculihominis clade by 100% bootstrap support. Pathogenicity experiments were performed in triplicate. Ten Newhall navel oranges were surface sterilized with 75% ethanol and inoculated with 15µL of a spore suspension (2×106 spores/ml) into a 3 mm-diameter wound on the equator. The control group received sterile water instead of the spore suspension. Treated and control oranges were incubated at 25±1 ℃ and about 90% relative humidity for 20 days. All oranges were cut longitudinally or transversely through the inoculated wound and examined internally. The oranges inoculated with ND-hsp exhibited ink-black flesh and juice symptoms consistent with the initial oranges. The control oranges remained asymptomatic. Under the Koch's rule, V. oculihominis was reisolated from diseased oranges and kept in Collaborative Innovation Center of Postharvest Key Technology and Quality Safety of Fruits and Vegetables in Jiangxi Province. GenBank database analysis confirms that V. oculihominis has been found in human eye secretions and decayed trees. This is the first report of V. oculihominis as a pathogen on navel oranges in China. Our findings contribute to understanding of citrus fruit pathogens.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate factors associated with colostrum quality and FTPI in calves from dairy farms in Austria and to assess the associations between disease occurrence and FTPI in calves. In total, 250 calves and their colostrum samples originating from 11 dairy farms were included in the study. All calves born between September 2021 and September 2022 were included. Blood samples were collected between the third and the sixth day of age. The farmers were trained in disease detection and recorded any health events within the first three weeks of age daily. Multiparous cows (>3 lactation) and colostrum harvesting within the first 2 hours after parturition were significantly associated with good colostrum quality (>22% Brix). Colostrum quantity (≥2 L) and quality (≥22% Brix) acted as protective factors against FTPI (serum Brix ≥ 8.4%) with odds ratios of OR = 0.41 and OR = 0.26, respectively. Calves facing any health event (diarrhea, navel illness, bovine respiratory disease, abnormal behavior) in the first three weeks of life had a higher probability of FTPI. Calves exhibiting diarrhea in the first 3 weeks of life were associated with having FTPI (OR = 2.69). The results confirm the current recommendations for good colostrum management practices and the impact of FTPI on calf morbidity.

In this study, the co-digestion system with Navel orange residues (NOR) and Waste activated sludge (WAS) was established, by pre-treating the NOR and setting different volatile solids (VS) ratios of NOR to WAS to motivate the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA). The pre-treatment method (pH 7 and temperature 70 °C) promoted the release of dissolved organic matter, and the concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) increased by 45.56% compared with the untreated group (pH 3 and temperature 20 °C). In the co-digestion system, the highest VFA yield (5716.69 mg/L) was obtained at VS ratio of 2. When the VS ratio was increased to 4, the imbalance in proportions of carbon and nitrogen affected VFA production, and the high concentration of essential oils (EO) present in the NOR inhibited the methane production; the cumulative yield of methane gas decreased by 24.10% compared with the yield obtained when the VS ratio was 2. Analysis of microbial community revealed that an increase in the number of VFA-producing microbial populations and the abundance of Methanobacteria resulted in the accumulation of acetic acid. This study demonstrated that co-digestion of NOR with WAS improve VFA production, thus realizing the utilization of solid wastes and reducing environmental pollution.

Gannan navel orange is a famous brand in China but the isolation of its endophytic fungi was rarely reported. In this study, a total of 54 strains of endophytic fungi were successfully isolated from the pulp, peel, twig, and leaf of Gannan navel orange; they were successfully identified to belong to 17 species of 12 genera. All these strains were fermented using potato-dextrose agar (PDA) medium, and their secondary metabolites were then extracted with ethyl acetate (EtOAc). The antibacterial assays of Escherichia coli (E. coli), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) were also performed for the EtOAc extracts of these strains. As a result, the extracts of both Geotrichum sp. (gc-1-127-30) and Diaporthe biconispora (gc-1-128-79) demonstrated significant antibacterial activities against Xcc, and the MIC value for the extract of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides against MRSA was low to 62.5 µg/mL. Moreover, the chemical components of the extracts of Colletotrichum sp., Diaporthe biconispora, and Annulohypoxylon atroroseum were primarily investigated, and they successfully led to the isolation of 24 compounds involving a new botryane sesquiterpene. Among the isolated products, compound 2 showed significant inhibitory activities toward SA, MRSA, E. coli, and Xcc with MIC values of 12.5, 3.1, 125, and 12.5 µg/mL, respectively. This study revealed that the endophytic fungi of Gannan navel orange showed high potency to produce secondary metabolites with significant antibacterial effects.

'Lane Late', a late-maturing navel orange cultivar, is mainly distributed in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, which matures in the late March of the next year and needs overwintering cultivation. Citrus fruit granulation is a physiological disorder, which is characterized by lignification and dehydration of juice sac cells, seriously affecting the commercial value of citrus fruits. The pre-harvest granulation of late-maturing navel orange is main caused by low temperature in the winter, but its mechanism and regulation pattern remain unclear. In this study, a SG2-type R2R3-MYB transcription factor, CsMYB15, was identified from Citrus sinensis, which was significantly induced by both juice sac granulation and low temperature treatment. Subcellular localization analysis and transcriptional activation assay revealed that CsMYB15 protein was localized to the nucleus, and it exhibited transcriptional activation activity in yeast. Over-expression of CsMYB15 by stable transformation in navel orange calli and transient transformation in kumquat fruits and navel orange juice sacs significantly increased lignin content in the transgenic lines. Further, Yeast one hybrid, EMSA, and LUC assays demonstrated that CsMYB15 directly bound to the Cs4CL2 promoter and activated its expression, thereby causing a high accumulation of lignin in citrus. Taken together, these results elucidated the biological function of CsMYB15 in regulating Cs4CL2-mediated lignin biosynthesis, and provided novel insight into the transcriptional regulation mechanism underlying the juice sac granulation of late-maturing navel orange.

The whole-surface hyperspectral image acquisition of navel orange is particularly important for surface defect detection and quality classification. Because the light intensity at the edge of the navel orange is lower than that in the middle, the defects on the surface of the navel orange cannot be effectively identified. In this paper, a hyperspectral online sorting device for the whole-surface defects of navel orange is proposed. First of all, the image data of navel orange is collected by online detection sorting equipment and the spectral image of the characteristic wave peak of 1655.72 nm was extracted. Then, the light intensity at the edge of the navel orange is enhanced by nonuniformity correction based on quadratic curve fitting, and the light intensity correction of the navel orange is realized. Finally, the corrected image is segmented by the threshold to obtain surface defects, and the number of surface defect pixels is improved effectively compared with that before light intensity correction. Ultimately, the online sorting test is carried out, and the detection accuracy is 100%. This indicates that this method effectively improves the sensitivity of defect detection. At the same time, the dimensionality reduction of hyperspectral data is also carried out, which is conducive to improving the efficiency of online detection.

Amyelois transitella is the primary pest of pistachios in California. The first A. transitella outbreak of the twenty-first century occurred in 2007 and a total of five outbreaks occurred between 2007 and 2017 (total insect damage >1%). This study used processor information to identify the nut factors associated with the outbreaks. Processor grade sheets were used to explore the relationship between the variables time of harvest, percent nut split, percent nut dark staining, percent nut shell damage, and percent adhering hull for Low Damage (82,537 loads) and High Damage years, (92,307 loads). Total insect damage (±SD) for the Low Damage years averaged 0.005 ± 0.01 and in High Damage years was three times higher, 0.015 ± 0.02. In Low Damage years the strongest correlation was between total insect damage and two variables, percent adhering hull and dark stain (0.25, 0.23) while in High Damage years the correlation between total insect damage and percent dark stain was the highest (0.32) followed by percent adhering hull (0.19). The linkage of these nut factors to insect damage suggests that outbreak prevention depends on early identification of premature hull split/breakdown in addition to the traditional emphasis on treating the standing population of A. transitella.
