RESUMO

In the dynamic landscape of maternal and child health, understanding the intricate interplay between environmental factors and pregnancy outcomes is of paramount importance. This study investigates the relationship between maternal greenness exposure and preterm births in Brazil using data spanning from 2010 to 2019. Satellite-derived indices, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), were employed to assess greenness exposure during whole pregnancy in maternal residential area. Employing Cox proportional hazard models, we calculated the hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for changes in NDVI, while adjusting for individual and area-level covariates. In total, 24,010,250 live births were included. Prevalence of preterm birth was 11.5%, with a modest but statistically significant decreasing trend (p = 0.013) observed across the nation over the study period. The findings reveal a significant association between greenness exposure and a reduced risk of preterm birth. Specifically, for every 0.1 increase in NDVI, there was a 2.0% decrease in the risk of preterm birth (95%CI: 1.9%-2.2%). Stratified analyses based on maternal education and ethnicity indicated potential effect modifications, with stronger protective effects observed among younger mothers and those with less years of education. Sensitivity analyses using EVI yielded consistent results. In conclusion, this study suggests that higher maternal greenness exposure is linked to a decreased risk of preterm birth in Brazil. These findings imply that enhancing residential greenspaces could be a valuable public health strategy to promote maternal and child health in Brazil.

RESUMO

The destructive and empirical methods commonly used to estimate carbon pools in forests managed timber are time-consuming, expensive and unfeasible at a large scale; satellite images allow evaluations at different scales, reducing time and costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the tree biomass (TB) and carbon content (CC) through satellite images derived from Sentinel 2 in underutilized stands in southern Mexico. In 2022, 12 circular sites of 400 m2 with four silvicultural treatments (STs) were established in a targeted manner: 1st thinning (T1), free thinning (FT), regeneration cut (RC) and unmanaged area (UA). A tree inventory was carried out, and samples were obtained to determine their TB based on specific gravity and CC through the Walkey and Black method. The satellite image of the study area was downloaded from Sentinel 2 to fit a simple linear model as a function of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (10 m pixel-1) showing significance (p ≤ 0.01) and a adjusted R2 = 0.92. Subsequently, the TB and CC (t ha-1) were estimated for each ST and managed area. The total managed area (3,201 ha-1) had 126 t TB ha-1 and 57 t C ha-1. Of the areas with STs, the area with FT showed the highest accumulation of TB (140 t ha-1) and C (63 t ha-1) without showing differences (p > 0.05) with respect to those of the UA, which presented 129 t TB ha-1 and 58 t C ha-1. The satellite images from Sentinel 2 provide reliable estimates of the amounts of TB and CC in the managed stands. Therefore, it can be concluded that an adequate application of STs maintains a balance in the accumulation of tree C.

RESUMO

Advances in breeding efforts to increase the rate of genetic gains and enhance crop resilience to climate change have been limited by the procedure and costs of phenotyping methods. The recent rapid development of sensors, image-processing technology, and data-analysis has provided opportunities for multiple scales phenotyping methods and systems, including satellite imagery. Among these platforms, satellite imagery may represent one of the ultimate approaches to remotely monitor trials and nurseries planted in multiple locations while standardizing protocols and reducing costs. However, the deployment of satellite-based phenotyping in breeding trials has largely been limited by low spatial resolution of satellite images. The advent of a new generation of high-resolution satellites may finally overcome these limitations. The SkySat constellation started offering multispectral images at a 0.5 m resolution since 2020. In this communication we present a case study on the use of time series SkySat images to estimate NDVI from wheat and maize breeding plots encompassing different sizes and spacing. We evaluated the reliability of the calculated NDVI and tested its capacity to detect seasonal changes and genotypic differences. We discuss the advantages, limitations, and perspectives of this approach for high-throughput phenotyping in breeding programs.

RESUMO

The Lluta River is the northernmost coastal wetland in Chile, representing a unique ecosystem and an important source of water in the extremely arid Atacama Desert. During peak season, the wetland is home to more than 150 species of wild birds and is the first stopover point for many migratory species that arrive in the country along the Pacific migratory route, thereby representing a priority site for avian influenza virus (AIV) surveillance in Chile. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of influenza A virus (IAV) in the Lluta River wetland, identify subtype diversity, and evaluate ecological and environmental factors that drive the prevalence at the study site. The wetland was studied and sampled from September 2015 to October 2020. In each visit, fresh fecal samples of wild birds were collected for IAV detection by real-time RT-PCR. Furthermore, a count of wild birds present at the site was performed and environmental variables, such as temperature, rainfall, vegetation coverage (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-NDVI), and water body size were determined. A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) was built to assess the association between AIV prevalence and explanatory variables. Influenza positive samples were sequenced, and the host species was determined by barcoding. Of the 4349 samples screened during the study period, overall prevalence in the wetland was 2.07% (95% CI: 1.68 to 2.55) and monthly prevalence of AIV ranged widely from 0% to 8.6%. Several hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) subtypes were identified, and 10 viruses were isolated and sequenced, including low pathogenic H5, H7, and H9 strains. In addition, several reservoir species were recognized (both migratory and resident birds), including the newly identified host Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis). Regarding environmental variables, prevalence of AIV was positively associated with NDVI (OR = 3.65, p < 0.05) and with the abundance of migratory birds (OR = 3.57, p < 0.05). These results emphasize the importance of the Lluta wetland as a gateway to Chile for viruses that come from the Northern Hemisphere and contribute to the understanding of AIV ecological drivers.

RESUMO

Many wetlands around the world that occur at the base of watersheds are under threat from land-use change, hydrological alteration, nutrient pollution, and invasive species. A relevant measure of whether the ecological character of these ecosystems has changed is the species diversity of wetland-dependent waterbirds, especially those of conservation value. Here, we evaluate the potential mechanisms controlling variability over time and space in avian species diversity of the wetlands in the Palo Verde National Park, a Ramsar Site of international importance in Costa Rica. To do so, we assessed the relative importance of several key wetland condition metrics (i.e., surface water depth, wetland extent, and vegetation greenness), and temporal fluctuations in these metrics, in predicting the abundance of five waterbirds of high conservation value as well as overall waterbird diversity over a 9-yr period. Generalized additive models revealed that mean NDVI, an indicator of vegetation greenness, combined with a metric used to evaluate temporal fluctuations in the wetland extent best predicted four of the five waterbird species of high conservation value as well as overall waterbird species richness and diversity. Black-bellied Whistling-ducks, which account for over one-half of all waterbird individuals, and all waterbird species together were better predicted by including surface water depth along with wetland extent and its fluctuations. Our calibrated species distribution model confidently quantified monthly averages of the predicted total waterbird abundances in seven of the 10 sub-wetlands making up the Ramsar Site and confirmed that the biophysical diversity of this entire wetland system is important to supporting waterbird populations both as a seasonal refuge and more permanently. This work further suggests that optimizing the timing and location of ongoing efforts to reduce invasive vegetation cover may be key to avian conservation by increasing waterbird habitat.

RESUMO

The arrangement of soybean plants defines their ability to recognize the environment and improve their abiotic and biotic interactions with it. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of planting arrangements associated to two distinct crop systems (high technological level or conventional crop level) for the soybean varieties 8473 RSF and AS 3730, to evaluate the plant performance and productivity in the field. A double factorial scheme was used with two varieties and six spatial arrangements. Two experiments were conducted during the 20172018 crop season: the first was based on standard cultivation of the Brazilian Cerrado (without irrigation systems and adequate fertilizer), whereas the second utilized high technology (irrigation systems and increased fertilizer). The morphophysiological parameters, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), leaf pigment content and crop yield parameters were evaluated. Our study pointed out the positive responses for both cultivated varieties and two technological levels adopted cultivated under equidistant arrangement and high density. The leaf area index, leaf pigment content, NDVI, and crop production showed substantial responses under different equidistant arrangements. Therefore, this procedure requires adjustments in the level of cultivation technology and identification of the most suitable soybean variety.

The identification of traits associated with drought tolerance in popcorn is a contribution to support selection of superior plants under soil water deficit. The objective of this study was to choose morphological traits and the leaf greenness index, measured on different dates, to estimate grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE), evaluated in a set of 20 popcorn lines with different genealogies, estimated by multiple regression models. The variables were divided into three groups: morpho-agronomic traits-100-grain weight (GW), prolificacy (PR), tassel length (TL), number of tassel branches, anthesis-silking interval, leaf angle (FA) and leaf rolling (FB); variables related to the intensity of leaf greenness during the grain-filling period, at the leaf level, measured by a portable chlorophyll meter (SPAD) and at the canopy level, calculated as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The inbred lines were cultivated under two water conditions: well-watered (WW), maintained at field capacity, and water stress (WS), for which irrigation was stopped before male flowering. The traits GY (55%) and PE (28%) were most affected by water restriction. Among the morpho-agronomic traits, GW and PR were markedly reduced (>10%). Under dry conditions, the FA in relation to the plant stalk tended to be wider, the FB curvature greater and leaf senescence accelerated (>15% at 22 days after male flowering). The use of multiple regression for the selection of predictive traits proved to be a useful tool for the identification of groups of adequate traits to efficiently predict the economically most important features of popcorn (GY and PE). The SPAD index measured 17 days after male flowering proved useful to select indirectly for GY, while, among the morphological traits, TL stood out for the same purpose. Of all traits, PR was most strongly related with PE under WS, indicating its use in breeding programs. The exploitation of these traits by indirect selection is expected to induce increments in GY and PE.

RESUMO

Numerous previous studies have reported positive associations between exposure to greenspace and children's physical activity, but in high-income countries only. Prior studies have also examined greenspace and obesity in children, but these have yielded inconsistent results and focused mostly on older children. The purpose of this study was to assess associations between time children spent in greenspace as the primary exposure and our outcomes of interest, including 1) minutes of physical activity, and 2) body mass index (BMI) z-score. Our sample was 102 children ages 3 to 5 years living in Ensenada and Tijuana, Mexico. We fit linear mixed models to estimate associations between greenspace and children's physical activity and BMI z-score. After adjustment for potential confounders, greater time in greenspace was associated with decreased sedentary time (-0.08 min per hour for each additional 30 min in greenspace; 95% CI -0.13, -0.04; p = 0.002) and increased moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) (0.06; 95% CI 0.03, 0.10; p < 0.001). Results were driven primarily by children in Tijuana (-0.22; 95% CI -0.38, -0.06; p = 0.008 for sedentary time and 0.15; 95% CI 0.06, 0.38; p = 0.007 for MVPA). Time in greenspace was not associated with BMI z-score in children in Ensenada (0.001; 95% CI -0.008, 0.01; p = 0.83) or Tijuana (-0.009; 95% CI -0.02, 0.004; p = 0.17). Greater time in greenspace was associated with physical activity but not BMI in our sample of children-more so in Tijuana compared to Ensenada. Given high rates of obesity, interventions should aim to increase physical activity in young children in Northern Mexico.

RESUMO

The spatiotemporal population dynamics of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae) were evaluated in a city in Argentina in which visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. Over 14 sampling sessions, 5244 specimens of five species of Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) were captured, of which 2458 (46.87%) specimens were L. longipalpis. Generalized linear models were constructed to evaluate the associations between L. longipalpis abundance and explanatory variables derived from satellite images. The spatial variable 'stratum' and the temporal variable 'season' were also included in the models. Three variables were found to have significant associations: the normalized difference vegetation index; land surface temperature, and low urban coverage. The last two of these were associated with L. longipalpis abundance only during summer and winter, respectively. This variation between seasons supports the development of models that include temporal variables because models of distributions of the abundance of a species may show different critical variables according to the climatic period of the year. Abundance decreased gradually towards the downtown area, which suggests that L. longipalpis responds to a meta-population structure, in which rural-periurban source populations that persist over time may colonize adjacent areas. This information allows for a spatiotemporal stratification of risk, which provides public health authorities with a valuable tool to help optimize prevention measures against visceral leishmaniasis.

RESUMO

Distribution and abundance of disease vectors are directly related to climatic conditions and environmental changes. Remote sensing data have been used for monitoring environmental conditions influencing spatial patterns of vector-borne diseases. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and climatic factors (temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and accumulated rainfall) on the distribution and abundance of Anopheles species in northwestern Argentina using Poisson regression analyses. Samples were collected from December, 2001 to December, 2005 at three localities, Aguas Blancas, El Oculto and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. We collected 11,206 adult Anopheles species, with the major abundance observed at El Oculto (59.11%), followed by Aguas Blancas (22.10%) and San Ramón de la Nueva Orán (18.79%). Anopheles pseudopunctipennis was the most abundant species at El Oculto, Anopheles argyritarsis predominated in Aguas Blancas, and Anopheles strodei in San Ramón de la Nueva Orán. Samples were collected throughout the sampling period, with the highest peaks during the spring seasons. LST and mean temperature appear to be the most important variables determining the distribution patterns and major abundance of An. pseudopunctipennis and An. argyritarsis within malarious areas.

RESUMO

With devastating increase in population there is a great necessity to increase crop productivity of staple crops but the productivity is greatly affected by various abiotic stress factors such as drought, salinity. An attempt has been made a brief account on abiotic stress resistance of major cereal crops viz. In spite of good successes obtained on physiological and use molecular biology, the benefits of this high cost technology are beyond the reach of developing countries. This review discusses several morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of major cereal crops related to the adaptation of these crop to abiotic stress factors. It discusses the effect of abiotic stresses on physiological processes such as flowering, grain filling and maturation and plant metabolisms viz. photosynthesis, enzyme activity, mineral nutrition, and respiration. Though significant progress has been attained on the physiological, biochemical basis of resistance to abiotic stress factors, very little progress has been achieved to increase productivity under sustainable agriculture. Therefore, there is a great necessity of inter-disciplinary research to address this issue and to evolve efficient technology and its transfer to the farmers' fields.

RESUMO

Rational management in a watershed requires knowledge of several important parameters regarding the hydrology, including morphometric, vegetation cover and soil organic matter (MOS) amounts. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the morphometric characteristics, identify the existence of vegetation using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and analyze the spatial variability of the organic matter amount, obtained through combination of landscape properties of the Salto Sub-basin, Extrema, MG, Brazil. Digitalized topographic maps, satellites images and the Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation methods were used to acquire the MOS spatial variability. The Salto Sub-basin has a median tendency for flooding; drainage is efficient and highly branched. Most part of the Sub-basin is occupied by degraded pastures with vegetation with high biomass occurs mainly in headwater areas. The properties set that better estimated the MOS was slope, profile curvature, NDVI and topographic wetness index (TWI). In most of the study area, MOS showed medium amount (2.01 to 4.00 dag kg-1), with higher levels in areas of high altitudes (about 1,600 m) at the headwaters of the Sub-basin.

A Sub-bacia do Salto possui tendência mediana a enchentes, a drenagem é eficiente e bastante ramificada.

In order to evaluate the satellite image patterns between such cool season cereals cultivated areas intended for grazing or grain production, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) temporal profiles were analyzed. This data was acquired from twenty nine wheat and annual ryegrass cultivated areas in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná. For each area, the cultivated species (wheat or ryegrass), as well as the respective central point coordinates, acquired via Global Positioning System (GPS) was informed. NDVI values were extracted over each monitored area from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) sensor images, with spatial resolution of 250 meters. The NDVI temporal profiles showed that grain production areas have a typical agricultural field spectral pattern. The same pattern was not observed for the grazing pasture areas. The differences observed in these temporal patterns are defined by the changes that grazing has imposed on the phenology and morphology of these plants.
