BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted health, mental well-being, and societal functioning, particularly for individuals with psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders. Recent evidence highlights a concerning increase in alcohol consumption during the pandemic, with a study spanning 2015-2020 indicating heightened usage, especially among young and middle-aged adults, for relaxation and tension relief. Additionally, addressing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, another study underscored persistent barriers to healthcare access, resulting in increased alcohol and tobacco use rates and limited healthcare options. These findings shed light on the unique vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic, emphasizing the need to investigate further its impact on alcohol consumption in diverse non-urban American communities. AIM: To investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol abuse using socioeconomic and medical parameters in diverse non-urban community in America. METHODS: Based on a cross-sectional analysis of 416 participants the United States in 2021, the study utilized The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria to categorize alcohol consumption levels. Participants aged 21 years and above were surveyed through an online platform due to COVID-19 challenges. The survey was conducted from January 14 to January 31, 2022, recruiting participants via social media and ensuring anonymity. Informed consent was secured, emphasizing the voluntary nature of participation, and participants could only take the survey once. RESULTS: Out of 416 survey respondents, 396 met eligibility criteria, with 62.9% reporting increased alcohol consumption during COVID-19. Males (68.8%) and ages 21-29 years (34.6%) predominated. Low alcohol consumption decreased by 2.8% (P = 0.237), moderate by 21.4% (P < 0.001), and heavy increased by 14.9% (P < 0.001). Alcohol abuse rose by 6.5% (P = 0.0439), with a 7% increase in self-identified alcohol abusers/alcoholics. Seeking treatment during COVID-19 rose by 6.9%. Easier alcohol access (76.0%) was reported, while 80.7% found it harder to access medical care for alcohol-related issues. These findings highlight the pandemic's impact on alcohol consumption and healthcare access, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions during public health crises. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated alcoholism and abuse, with increased heavy consumption (P < 0.001) and abuse (P = 0.0439). Access to medical programs for addressing alcohol abuse declined, highlighting the need for targeted intervention.

Objective: Describe the epidemiology of COVID-19 deaths within a hospital in the Amazon region in a period of 64 days, which corresponds to the growth curve of the COVID-19 first-wave pandemic in 2020. Methods: The data were obtained from medical records of 152 deaths registered for adults and elderly hospitalized. The data were also compared with the number of deaths in previous years during the same period studied to assess the impact of the pandemic on this hospital. The study also assesses the impact of intra-hospital transfers, accounting for the number of times patients who died performed transfers between sectors of the hospital. Results: During the period analyzed, there was an increase in deaths compared to the previous years. The majority of dead patients were male, aged between 34 and 96 years. The deaths were associated comorbidities such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and kidney disease. The SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed in 91 cases. Among them, 15 individuals were admitted without conditions related to SARS-CoV-2 infection; they had a three-fold higher number of hospital transfers than those admitted with SARS-CoV-2 infection symptoms. Sixteen patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection developed respiratory symptoms just after hospitalization. The diagnostic exam for SARS-CoV-2 infection was performed on average 4 (± 6) days after the onset of symptoms and 6 (± 6) days after admission, and the average time from the onset of respiratory symptoms to death was 4 (± 6) days. Conclusions: These data suggest the high presence of hospital infection by SARS-CoV-2 in the Brazilian Amazon region, which may be related to the number of sectorial transfers, delay in confirming the diagnosis, and lack of management. We report a serious public health problem, as it demonstrates the fragility of healthcare institutions in the hospital environmen (AU).
Objetivo: Descrever a epidemiologia de mortes por COVID-19 em um hospital na região da Amazônia em um período de 64 dias, que corresponde à curva de crescimento da primeira onda da pandemia de COVID-19 em 2020. Métodos: Os dados foram obtidos de 152 óbitos registrados em prontuários de adultos e idosos hospitalizados. Os dados foram também comparados com o número de óbitos em anos anteriores, no mesmo período estudado, de forma a avaliar o impacto da pandemia neste hospital. O estudo também avalia o impacto das transferências intra-hospitalares, contabilizando o número de vezes que os pacientes que faleceram realizaram transferências entre setores do hospital. Resultados: No período analisado, houve aumento de óbitos em relação aos anos anteriores. A maioria dos pacientes mortos era do sexo masculino, com idade entre 34 e 96 anos. Os óbitos foram associados a comorbidades como hipertensão arterial, diabetes mellitus e doença renal. A infecção por SARS-CoV-2 foi confirmada em 91 casos. Entre eles, 15 indivíduos foram internados sem condições relacionadas à infecção por SARS-CoV-2; eles tiveram um número três vezes maior de transferências hospitalares do que aqueles admitidos com sintomas de infecção por SARS-CoV-2. Dezesseis pacientes com infecção por SARS-CoV-2 desenvolveram sintomas respiratórios logo após a hospitalização. O exame diagnóstico para infecção por SARS-CoV-2 foi realizado em média 4 (± 6) dias após o início dos sintomas e 6 (± 6) dias após a admissão, e o tempo médio do início dos sintomas respiratórios até o óbito foi de 4 ( ± 6) dias. Conclusões: Esses dados sugerem alta presença de infecção hospitalar por SARS-CoV-2 na região amazônica brasileira, o que pode estar relacionado ao número de transferências setoriais, demora na confirmação do diagnóstico e falta de manejo. Relatamos um grave problema de saúde pública, pois demonstra a fragilidade das instituições de saúde no ambiente hospitalar (AU).

The dispersion of SARS-CoV-2 in aquatic environments via the discharge of domestic and hospital sewage has been confirmed in different locations. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the possible impacts of zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposure to SARS-CoV-2 peptide fragments (PSPD-2001, 2002, and 2003) alone and combined with a mix of emerging pollutants. Our data did not reveal the induction of behavioral, biometric, or mutagenic changes. But we noticed an organ-dependent biochemical response. While nitric oxide and malondialdehyde production in the brain, gills, and muscle did not differ between groups, superoxide dismutase activity was reduced in the "PSPD", "Mix", and "Mix+PSPD" groups. An increase in catalase activity and a reduction in DPPH radical scavenging activity were observed in the brains of animals exposed to the treatments. However, the "Mix+PSPD" group had a higher IBRv2 value, with NO levels (brain), the reduction of acetylcholinesterase activity (muscles), and the DPPH radical scavenging activity (brain and muscles), the most discriminant factors for this group. The principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical clustering analysis indicated a clear separation of the "Mix+PSPD" group from the others. Thus, we conclude that exposure to viral fragments, associated with the mix of pollutants, induced more significant toxicity in zebrafish adults than in others.

Novel coronavirus (nCoV) namely "SARS-CoV-2" is being found responsible for current PANDEMIC commenced from Wuhan (China) since December 2019 and has been described with epidemiological linkage to China in about 221 countries and territories until now. In this study we have characterized the genetic lineage of SARS-CoV-2 and report the recombination within the genus and subgenus of coronaviruses. Phylogenetic relationship of thirty nine coronaviruses belonging to its four genera and five subgenera was analyzed by using the Neighbor-joining method using MEGA 6.0. Phylogenetic trees of full length genome, various proteins (spike, envelope, membrane and nucleocapsid) nucleotide sequences were constructed separately. Putative recombination was probed via RDP4. Our analysis describes that the "SARS-CoV-2" although shows great similarity to Bat-SARS-CoVs sequences through whole genome (giving sequence similarity 89%), exhibits conflicting grouping with the Bat-SARS-like coronavirus sequences (MG772933 and MG772934). Furthermore, seven recombination events were observed in SARS-CoV-2 (NC_045512) by RDP4. But not a single recombination event fulfills the high level of certainty. Recombination mostly housed in spike protein genes than rest of the genome indicating breakpoint cluster arises beyond the 95% and 99% breakpoint density intervals. Genetic similarity levels observed among "SARS-CoV-2" and Bat-SARS-CoVs advocated that the latter did not exhibit the specific variant that cause outbreak in humans, proposing a suggestion that "SARS-CoV-2" has originated possibly from bats. These genomic features and their probable association with virus characteristics along with virulence in humans require further consideration.(AU)

RESUMO
Bibliometric research provides a quantitative basis for evaluating the productivity and impact of researchers, research groups, institutions, and even countries. Therefore, this study examined a bibliometric analysis of the available research on Coronavirus. We explored the Web of Science, WoS, and database for publications about COVID-19 beginning January 2000 up until December 2021. Only relevant observational and interventional studies on coronavirus covering the study period were included in the study. Data covering publications on coronavirus research from 2000 to 2021 were extracted from the ISI Web of Science on January17, 2022.A total of 96,766 research publications were found. Nine objectives were developed to guide the study. There were many research publications in the year 2021, followed by 2020. The most funding agencies for coronavirus have been the United States Department of Health Human Services, National Institute of Health NIH, USA, national Natural Science Foundation of China NSFC, NIH National Institute of Allergy Infection Diseases NIAID, National Key Research and Development Program of China, European Union EU. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and PLOS ONE are the leading research outlet on coronavirus in the world as the duo has collectively published 2,196 in the area of coronavirus. The study concluded that the USA, the Peoples' Republic of China, Italy, England, and India are the leading countries that have contributed to research in coronavirus(AU)
La investigación bibliométrica proporciona una base cuantitativa para evaluar la productividad y el impacto de investigadores, grupos de investigación, instituciones e, incluso, países. Por lo tanto, este estudio examinó un análisis bibliométrico de la investigación disponible sobre el coronavirus. Exploramos la Web of Science, WoS y la base de datos en busca de publicaciones sobre COVID-19 desde enero de 2000 hasta diciembre de 2021. Se incluyeron en el estudio estudios observacionales e intervencionistas relevantes sobre el coronavirus que cubrían el período de estudio. Los datos de las publicaciones sobre la investigación del coronavirus de 2000 a 2021 se extrajeron del ISI Web of Science el 17 de enero de 2022. Se encontró un total de 96,766 publicaciones. Se desarrollaron nueve objetivos para guiar el estudio. El año de mayor cantidad de publicaciones fue el 2021, seguido del 2020. Las agencias que más fondos han financiado para el coronavirus han sido el Departamento de Servicios Humanos de Salud de los Estados Unidos, el Instituto Nacional de Salud NIH, EE.UU., la Fundación Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de China NSFC, el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Infecciosas Alérgicas de los NIH, el NIAID, el Programa Nacional Clave de Investigación y Desarrollo de China y la Unión Europea UE. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollutants and illness by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-Cov-2) infection can cause serious pulmonary impairment. OBJECTIVE: To identify a possible association between exposure to air pollutants and hospitalizations due to SARS-Cov-2. DESIGN AND SETTING: Ecological time-series study carried out in Taubaté, Tremembé, and Pindamonhangaba in 2020 and 2021. METHODS: Study with Sars-Cov-2 hospitalizations with information on hospitalization date, sex and age of the subjects, duration of hospitalization, type of discharge, and costs of these hospitalizations. Statistical analysis was performed through a negative binomial regression, with data on pollutant concentrations, temperature, air relative humidity, and hospitalization date. Coefficients obtained by the analysis were transformed into relative risk for hospitalization, which estimated hospitalizations excess according to an increase in pollutant concentrations. RESULTS: There were 1,300 hospitalizations and 368 deaths, with a predominance of men (61.7%). These data represent an incidence rate of 250.4 per 100,000 inhabitants and 28.4% hospital lethality. Significant exposure (P value < 0.05) occurred seven days before hospital admission (lag 7) for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (relative risk, RR = 1.0124) and two days before hospital admission for PM2.5 (RR = 1.0216). A 10 μg/m3 in NO2 concentration would decrease by 320 hospitalizations and ¼ US $ 240,000 in costs; a 5 μg/m3 in PM2.5 concentration would decrease by 278 hospitalizations and ¼ US $ 190,000 in costs. CONCLUSION: An association between exposure to air pollutants and hospital admission due to Sars-Cov-2 was observed with excess hospitalization and costs for the Brazilian public health system.

Fundamento: la pandemia asociada a la COVID-19 obligó a buscar formas de sostener procesos y servicios. La modalidad de teletrabajo se convirtió en aliada para poder sobrellevar desde los hogares el quehacer laboral. En el año 2022 se inició el proceso de retorno a la presencialidad en la Educación Superior chilena. Objetivo: identificar factores protectores y obstaculizadores que identifican los trabajadores académicos y no académicos de instituciones de Educación Superior chilenas para volver a la presencialidad. Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo y de corte transversal. Se trabajó con una muestra total de 124 participantes. La muestra se obtuvo de la participación voluntaria de funcionarios académicos y no académicos quienes respondieron una encuesta por formulario. Los datos fueron recogidos entre octubre de 2021 y marzo de 2022. Se aplicó cuestionario acerca de factores protectores y obstaculizadores presentes en el retorno seguro. Se recodificaron los datos, para trabajar con frecuencias y porcentajes de respuestas. Resultados: los mayores obstáculos percibidos para el retorno a la presencialidad laboral se correspondieron con personas que declararon presencia de enfermedad crónica y algún síntoma asociado a salud mental (52-58 %). Las personas menores de 40 años identificaron el factor inmunización y poseer un buen estado de salud como factores facilitadores para el retorno a la presencialidad (54-62 %). Conclusiones: las organizaciones deben desarrollar programas de apoyo para el retorno laboral, de manera que estas acciones favorezcan mejores niveles de bienestar en el trabajo. Se consideran las diferencias de edad, género y presencia de patologías crónicas previas como factores obstaculizadores del retorno.
Background: the pandemic associated with COVID-19 forced the search for ways to sustain processes and services. The teleworking modality became an ally to be able to cope with work from home. In 2022, the process of returning to presence in Chilean Higher Education began. Objective: to identify protective and hindering factors identified by academic and non-academic workers of Chilean Higher Education institutions to return to attendance. Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. We worked with a total sample of 124 participants. The sample was obtained from the voluntary participation of academic and non-academic officials who responded to a survey via form. The data was collected between October 2021 and March 2022. A questionnaire was applied about protective and hindering factors present in safe return. The data was recoded to work with frequencies and percentages of responses. Results: the greatest obstacles perceived for the return to work presence correspond to people who declare the presence of chronic disease and some symptom associated with mental health (52-58 %). People under 40 years of age identified the immunization factor and being in good health as facilitating factors for returning to attendance (54-62 %). Conclusions: organizations must develop support programs for return to work, so that these actions favor better levels of well-being at work. Differences in age, gender and the presence of previous chronic pathologies are considered as factors that hinder return.

Introduction: COVID-19 has a significant impact on the hematopoietic system and hemostasis. Leukocytosis, lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia are associated with increased severity and even death in COVID-19 cases. Objective: The aim is to examine the laboratory results of COVID-19 patients from a hospital in the Peruvian Amazon and their clinical prognosis. Material and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was carried out whose purpose was to identify the laboratory tests of patients with COVID-19 and mortality in a hospital in Ucayali, Peru during the period from March 13 to May 9, 2020, selecting a total of 127 with Covid-19. Mean and the standard deviation was described for age, leukocytes, neutrophils, platelets, RDW-SD; median and interquartile range for the variables lymphocyte, RN / L, fibrinogen, CRP, D-dimer, DHL, hematocrit, monocytes, eosinophils. Results: No differences were observed in this population regarding death and sex (OR: 1.31; 95% CI 0.92 to 1.87), however, it was observed that, for each one-year increase, the probability of death increased by 4% (PR: 1.04, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.05). The IRR (Incidence Risk Ratio) analysis for the numerical variables showed results strongly associated with hematological values such as Leukocytes (scaled by 2500 units) (IRR: 1.08, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.13), neutrophils (scaled by 2500 units) (IRR: 1.08; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.13), on the contrary, it is observed that the increase of 1000 units in lymphocytes, the probability of dying decreased by 48% (IRR: 0.52; 95% CI 0.38 to 071). Conclusions: Parameters such as leukocytes,neutrophils and D-dimer were statistically much higher in patients who died.
Introducción: COVID-19 tiene un impacto significativo en el sistema hematopoyético y la hemostasia. La leucocitosis, la linfopenia y la trombocitopenia se asocian con una mayor gravedad e incluso la muerte en los casos de COVID-19. Objetivo: examinar los resultados de laboratorio de pacientes con COVID-19 de un hospital de la Amazonía peruana y su pronóstico clínico. Material y métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal analítico cuyo propósito fue identificar las pruebas de laboratorio de pacientes con COVID-19 y mortalidad en un hospital de Ucayali, Perú durante el periodo del 13 de marzo al 9 de mayo del 2020, seleccionando un total de 127 con COVID-19. Se describió la media y la desviación estándar para edad, leucocitos, neutrófilos, plaquetas, RDW-SD; mediana y rango intercuartílico para las variables linfocito, RN/L, fibrinógeno, PCR, dímero D, DHL, hematocrito, monocitos, eosinófilos. Resultados: No se observaron diferencias en esta población en cuanto a muerte y sexo (OR: 1,31; IC 95% 0,92 a 1,87), sin embargo, se observó que, por cada aumento de un año, la probabilidad de muerte aumentaba un 4% (RP: 1,04). , IC del 95%: 1,03 a 1,05). El análisis de RIR (Razón de incidencia de riesgos) para las variables numéricas mostró resultados fuertemente asociados con valores hematológicos como Leucocitos (escala de 2500 unidades) (RRI: 1.08, 95% CI 1.03 a 1.13), neutrófilos (escala de 2500 unidades) (RRI: 1.08; IC 95% 1.03 a 1.13), por el contrario, se observa que al aumento de 1000 unidades en linfocitos, la probabilidad de morir disminuyó en un 48% (TIR: 0.52; IC 95% 0.38 a 071). Conclusiones: Parámetros tales como los leucocitos, los neutrófilos y el dímero D fueron estadísticamente mucho más altos en los pacientes que fallecieron.

Al finalizar el segundo año de la pandemia COVID-19, da la impresión que el coronavirus enigmático nos estuviera otorgando cierto respiro. Sin embargo, las cifras de infectados han iniciado un ascenso en el hemisferio norte, donde se aproxima un invierno fuerte, ya con nevadas. Pero también se observa este nuevo incremento en el hemisferio sur, como en el Perú, cuando estamos en primavera. El SARS-CoV-2 continúa diferenciándose en multitud de variantes y subvariantes, algunas de la cuales tienen mayor facilidad de evadir la inmunidad humana y aquella alcanzada con las vacunas de ARNm, y también podrían no responder a los tratamientos con anticuerpos monoclonales. La información clínica actual está orientada a la expectativa sobre si las vacunas existentes pudieran al menos minorizar las hospitalizaciones, el ingreso a cuidados intensivos y las muertes. Se sigue aprendiendo sobre los efectos clínicos de la infección por el SARS-CoV-2, la ocurrencia de reinfecciones y los daños físicos y mentales a largo plazo, buscándose la prevención de la infección, las reinfecciones y el COVID prolongado.
At the end of the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems that the enigmatic coronavirus is giving us some respite. However, the number of people infected has started to rise in the northern hemisphere, where a strong winter with snowfall is approaching. But this new increase is also observed in the southern hemisphere, as in Peru, when we are in spring. SARS-CoV-2 continues to differentiate into a multitude of variants and subvariants, some of which are more easily able to evade human immunity and that achieved with mRNA vaccines, and also may not respond to monoclonal antibody treatments. Current clinical information is oriented to the expectation that existing vaccines could at least reduce hospitalizations, intensive care admission and deaths. Learning about the clinical effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the occurrence of reinfection, and long-term physical and mental harm continues, with prevention of infection, reinfection, and prolonged COVID being sought.

Background: With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, all existing health protocols were tested under the worst health crisis humanity has experienced since the Black Death in the 14th century. Countries in Latin America have been the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 1.5 million people killed. Worldwide health measures have included quarantines, border closures, social distancing, and mask use, among others. In particular, Chile implemented total or partial quarantine measures depending on the number of infections in each region of the country. Therefore, it is necessary to study the effectiveness of these quarantines in relation to the public health measures implemented by government entities at the national level. Objective: The main objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of national- and region-level quarantines in Chile during the pandemic based on information published by the Chilean Ministry of Health, and answers to the following question are sought: Were quarantine measures in Chile effective during the COVID-19 pandemic? Methods: The causal effect between the rates of COVID-19 infections and the population rates in Phase 1 and Phase 2 quarantines in the period from March 2020 to March 2021 in different regions of Chile were evaluated using intervention analyses obtained through Bayesian structural time series models. In addition, the Kendall correlation coefficient obtained through the copula approach was used to evaluate the comovement between these rates. Results: In 75% of the Chilean regions under study (12 regions out of a total of 16), an effective Phase 1 quarantine, which was implemented to control and reduce the number of cases of COVID-19 infection, was observed. The main regions that experienced a decrease in cases were those located in the north and center of Chile. Regarding Phase 2, the COVID-19 pandemic was effectively managed in 31% (5 out of 16) of the regions. In the south-central and extreme southern regions of Chile, the effectiveness of these phases was null. Conclusion: The findings indicate that in the northern and central regions of Chile, the Phase 1 quarantine application period was an effective strategy to prevent an increase in COVID-19 infections. The same observation was made with respect to Phase 2, which was effective in five regions of northern Chile; in the rest of the regions, the effectiveness of these phases was weak or null.

The coronavirus pandemic has seriously affected human health, although some improvements on environmental indexes have temporarily occurred, due to changes on socio-cultural and economic standards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impacts of the coronavirus and the influence of the lockdown associated with rainfall on the water quality of the Capibaribe and Tejipió rivers, Recife, Northeast Brazil, using cloud remote sensing on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. The study was carried out based on eight representative images from Sentinel-2. Among the selected images, two refer to the year 2019 (before the pandemic), three refer to 2020 (during a pandemic), two from the lockdown period (2020), and one for the year 2021. The land use and land cover (LULC) and slope of the study region were determined and classified. Water turbidity data were subjected to descriptive and multivariate statistics. When analyzing the data on LULC for the riparian margin of the Capibaribe and Tejipió rivers, a low permanent preservation area was found, with a predominance of almost 100% of the urban area to which the deposition of soil particles in rivers are minimal. The results indicated that turbidity values in the water bodies varied from 6 mg. L-1 up to 40 mg. L-1. Overall, the reduction in human-based activities generated by the lockdown enabled improvements in water quality of these urban rivers.

The input of SARS-CoV-2 or its fragments into freshwater ecosystems (via domestic or hospital sewage) has raised concerns about its possible impacts on aquatic organisms. Thus, using mayfly larvae [Cloeon dipterum (L.), Ephemeroptera: Baetidae] as a model system, we aimed to evaluate the possible effects of the combined short exposure of SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (named PSPD-2001, PSPD-2002, and PSPD-2003 - at 266.2 ng/L) with multiple emerging pollutants at ambient concentrations. After six days of exposure, we observed higher mortality of larvae exposed to SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (alone or in combination with the pollutant mix) and a lower-body condition index than those unexposed larvae. In the "PSPD" and "Mix+PSPD" groups, the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and the total thiol levels were also lower than in the "control" group. In addition, we evidenced the induction of nitrosative stress (inferred by increased nitrite production) and reduced acetylcholinesterase activity by SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides. On the other hand, malondialdehyde levels in larvae exposed to treatments were significantly lower than in unexposed larvae. The values of the integrated biomarker response index and the principal component analysis (PCA) results confirmed the similarity between the responses of animals exposed to SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides (alone and in combination with the pollutant mix). Although viral peptides did not intensify the effects of the pollutant mix, our study sheds light on the potential ecotoxicological risk associated with the spread of the new coronavirus in aquatic environments. Therefore, we recommend exploring this topic in other organisms and experimental contexts.

RESUMEN Introducción: Con la persistencia de la actual pandemia de COVID-19, se supondría que, después de dos años de evolución, algunas de sus características epidemiológicas ya estarían completamente aclaradas. Sin embargo, aún prevalece la incertidumbre sobre peculiaridades de su transmisión que resultan decisivas para la aplicación práctica en el control y prevención de esta enfermedad. Objetivo: Examinar y actualizar algunos conceptos, evidencias y opiniones sobre la transmisión de la COVID-19 en humanos. Métodos: Se realizó una revisión de artículos de la literatura médica científica relacionados con la temática de la transmisión del SARS-CoV-2, y accesibles principalmente en las bases PubMed/MEDLINE, y publicados entre marzo de 2020 y octubre de 2021. En la búsqueda se incluyeron los términos relacionados con la transmisión de la COVID-19. La búsqueda manual de las bibliografías de los artículos permitió identificar estudios adicionales. Información, análisis y síntesis: Los resultados y experiencias de las investigaciones sobre la transmisión de la COVID-19 deben considerarse para implementar políticas y estrategias sanitarias más adecuadas y sostenibles a nivel local y global. Aún se requieren más estudios inter-, trans- y multidisciplinarios que permitan una mejor comprensión de la compleja interrelación del SARS-CoV-2, los factores ambientales y el huésped susceptible, considerando el extraordinario impacto global de esta enfermedad.
ABSTRACT Introduction: With the persistence of the current COVID-19 pandemic, it would be assumed that, after two years of evolution, some of its epidemiological characteristics would be completely clarified. However, uncertainties still remain about peculiarities of its transmission that are decisive for the prevention and control of this disease. Objective: To examine and update some concepts, evidence and opinions on the transmission of COVID-19 to humans. Methods: It was conducted a review of the medical scientific literature on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, available in PubMed/MEDLINE database, and published between March 2020 and October 2021. Terms related to the transmission of COVID-19 were included in the search. The manual screening of the bibliography of the selected articles allowed identifying additional studies. Information, analysis and synthesis: The results and experiences of the research on the transmission of COVID-19 should be considered when implementing more accurate and sustainable sanitary policies and strategies at local and global level. Additional inter-, trans-, and multidisciplinary studies are still needed to better understand the complex interrelation among SARS-CoV-2, the environmental factors, and the susceptible hosts, considering the extraordinary impact of this disease worldwide.

BACKGROUND: The role of ivermectin in the treatment of COVID-19 is still under debate, yet the drug has been widely used in some parts of the world, as shown by impressive market data. The available body of evidence may have changed over the last months, as studies have been retracted and "standards of care" (SOC) used in control groups have changed with rapidly evolving knowledge on COVID-19. This review aims to summarize and critically appraise the evidence of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of ivermectin, assessing clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: RCTs evaluating the effects of ivermectin in adult patients with COVID-19 were searched through June 22, 2022, in four databases, L.OVE platform, clinical trial registries and pre-prints platforms. Primary endpoints included all-cause mortality and invasive ventilation requirement. Secondary endpoint was the occurrence of adverse events. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. Meta-analysis included only studies which compared ivermectin to placebo or SOC. Random-effects were used to pool the risk ratios (RRs) of individual trials. The quality of evidence was evaluated using GRADE. The protocol was register in PROSPERO (CRD42021257471). RESULTS: Twenty-five RCTs fulfilled inclusion criteria (n = 6310). Of those, 14 compared ivermectin with placebo, in night ivermectin associated with SOC was compared to SOC and two studies compared ivermectin to an active comparator. Most RCTs had some concerns or high risk of bias, mostly due to lack of concealment of the randomization sequence and allocation, lack of blinding and high number of missing cases. Ivermectin did not show an effect in reducing mortality (RR = 0.76; 95%CI: 0.52-1.11) or mechanical ventilation (RR = 0.74; 95%CI: 0.48-1.16). This effect was consistent when comparing ivermectin vs. placebo, and ivermectin associated with SOC vs. SOC, as well as in sensitivity analysis. Additionally, there was very low quality of evidence regarding adverse effects (RR = 1.07; 95%CI: 0.84-1.35). CONCLUSIONS: The evidence suggests that ivermectin does not reduce mortality risk and the risk of mechanical ventilation requirement. Although we did not observe an increase in the risk of adverse effects, the evidence is very uncertain regarding this endpoint.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Brazil is facing increasing cycles of numbers of infected people and deaths resulting from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This situation involves a series of factors, including the behavior of the population, that can be decisive for controlling the disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine the knowledge, attitudes and practices of the Brazilian population regarding COVID-19. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional survey-type study, conducted using a population sample from different Brazilian states. METHODS: A quantitative, descriptive and analytical approach was used. Sampling was done according to convenience and via snowballing. The data collection instrument was a knowledge, attitudes and practices system. RESULTS: 1,655 people from all over Brazil participated in the survey; 80% were living in the southern region and 70.15% were female. More than 90% had knowledge and good attitudes relating to the means of transmission, preventive care and symptoms associated with COVID-19, although their knowledge and attitudes were not fully reflected in daily practices, for which there was lower adherence (80%). Greater knowledge was correlated with older participants, larger number of children, female sex and marital status; better attitude, with female sex and complete higher education; and better practices, with greater age, larger number of children and female sex. CONCLUSION: A large part of the population has general knowledge about COVID-19, but not all knowledge was applied in practice. Older people, females and university graduates stood out as the best informed and most committed to controlling the disease.

This study aimed to guide professionals working in veterinary laboratories, outpatient clinics, medical centers, and hospitals regarding the biosafety measures that should be adopted during the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. While the population is not yet fully immunized by vaccines, the adoption of biosafety measures is essential to control the spread of circulating strains of the new coronavirus. Thus, the importance of professionals and collaborators following biosafety guidelines in different veterinary work environments is highlighted. The main protocols on biosafety to be adopted include frequent handwashing with water and soap or using 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizers, using personal protective equipment (PPE) (including gloves, lab coat, face mask), avoiding the contact of the hands with mucous membranes (eyes, nose and mouth), not sharing personal objects, keeping environments clean and well ventilated, social distancing of 1.5 m between individuals, and maintaining objects and surfaces regularly clean throughout the work environment. The transformation of work processes, such as various biosafety practices, is necessary within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and improves the safety of professionals in their work environment and other people and animals, decreasing contamination risks in order to reduce the spread of this viral agent.
