Sperm competition and male mating rate are two non-mutually exclusive key evolutionary pressures selecting for larger testes within and across animal taxa. A few studies have tried to test the role of mating rate in the absence of sperm competition. Under the mating rate hypothesis, particular phenotypes of a given population that are expected to gain more mates (e.g., more ornamented males) are expected to make higher investments in testes size (a proxy for sperm production). We test this prediction in Polistes simillimus, a neotropical paper wasp in which females are single mated (no sperm competition) and males can mate with multiple partners. Testes size was predicted by body size (positive association), sexual ornamentation (negative association), and their interaction (among small males, testes size was positively related to ornamentation, but the opposite pattern was observed among large males). We propose that small-bodied well-ornamented males may face the highest risk of sperm depletion. Small-bodied males make relatively higher investment in testes size when highly ornamented. This strategy might be less profitable to large males, as they have overall larger testes. Our results provide strong evidence for the mating rate hypothesis.

The development of inexpensive and portable point-of-care devices for measuring nutritional physiological parameters from blood (e.g., glucose, ketones) has accelerated our understanding and assessment of real-time variation in human health, but these have infrequently been tested or implemented in wild animals, especially in relation to other key biological or fitness-related traits. Here we used point-of-care devices to measure blood levels of glucose, ketones, uric acid, and triglycerides in free-ranging house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus)-a common songbird in North America that has been well-studied in the context of urbanization, nutrition, health, and sexual selection-during winter and examined (1) repeatability of these methods for evaluating blood levels in these wild passerines, (2) intercorrelations among these measurements within individuals, (3) how blood nutritional-physiology metrics related to a bird's body condition, habitat of origin (urban vs. suburban), poxvirus infection, and sex; and (4) if the expression of male sexually selected plumage coloration was linked to any of the nutritional-physiological metrics. All blood-nutritional parameters were repeatable. Also, there was significant positive covariation between concentrations of circulating triglycerides and glucose and triglycerides and uric acid. Urban finches had higher blood glucose concentrations than suburban finches, and pox-infected individuals had lower blood triglyceride concentrations than uninfected ones. Last, redder males had higher blood glucose, but lower uric acid levels. These results demonstrate that point-of-care devices can be useful, inexpensive ways of measuring real-time variation in the nutritional physiology of wild birds.

Birds are highly visually oriented and use plumage coloration as an important signalling trait in social communication. Hence, males and females may have different patterns of plumage coloration, a phenomenon known as sexual dichromatism. Because males tend to have more complex plumages, sexual dichromatism is usually attributed to female choice. However, plumage coloration is partly condition-dependent; therefore, other selective pressures affecting individuals' success may also drive the evolution of this trait. Here, we used tanagers as model organisms to study the relationships between dichromatism and plumage coloration complexity in tanagers with parasitism by haemosporidians, investment in reproduction and life-history traits. We screened blood samples from 2849 individual birds belonging to 52 tanager species to detect haemosporidian parasites. We used publicly available data for plumage coloration, bird phylogeny and life-history traits to run phylogenetic generalized least-square models of plumage dichromatism and complexity in male and female tanagers. We found that plumage dichromatism was more pronounced in bird species with a higher prevalence of haemosporidian parasites. Lastly, high plumage coloration complexity in female tanagers was associated with a longer incubation period. Our results indicate an association between haemosporidian parasites and plumage coloration suggesting that parasites impact mechanisms of sexual selection, increasing differences between the sexes, and social (non-sexual) selection, driving females to develop more complex coloration.

Capillariidae is a group of nematode parasites of vertebrates with a complex taxonomy. The structure of the eggshell, which was indicated as the most important characteristic for identification of genus or species through eggs, is very diverse among genera. The visualization and characterization of eggshell by light microscopy (LM) are a challenging task since different planes of the egg surface are needed. Nevertheless, categories of eggshell ornamentation were proposed by LM: smooth, punctuated, reticulated type I, and reticulated type II. The present study aimed to characterize the eggshell structure of Capillariidae species, parasites of mammals and avians, deposited in a helminthological collection using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Institutional Biological Collections are taxonomic repositories of specimens described and strictly identified at the species level by systematics specialists. SEM eggshell images were obtained from 12 species belonging to 5 genera (Aonchotheca, Baruscapillaria, Capillaria, Echinocoleus, Eucoleus) and compared to their respective LM images. Eggshell patterns observed using SEM were associated categories of eggshell ornamentation previously proposed by LM images. The SEM data indicate that eggshell categories are not in agreement with capillariid genera or sites of infection. However, the study provides previously unknown SEM eggshell information from curated species, which contributes with a specific and supplementary taxonomic feature at the species level of Capillariidae.

Hybrid speciation is rare in vertebrates, and reproductive isolation arising from hybridization is infrequently demonstrated. Here, we present evidence supporting a hybrid-speciation event involving the genetic admixture of the snow-capped (Lepidothrix nattereri) and opal-crowned (Lepidothrix iris) manakins of the Amazon basin, leading to the formation of the hybrid species, the golden-crowned manakin (Lepidothrix vilasboasi). We used a genome-wide SNP dataset together with analysis of admixture, population structure, and coalescent modeling to demonstrate that the golden-crowned manakin is genetically an admixture of these species and does not represent a hybrid zone but instead formed through ancient genetic admixture. We used spectrophotometry to quantify the coloration of the species-specific male crown patches. Crown patches are highly reflective white (snow-capped manakin) or iridescent whitish-blue to pink (opal-crowned manakin) in parental species but are a much less reflective yellow in the hybrid species. The brilliant coloration of the parental species results from nanostructural organization of the keratin matrix feather barbs of the crown. However, using electron microscopy, we demonstrate that the structural organization of this matrix is different in the two parental species and that the hybrid species is intermediate. The intermediate nature of the crown barbs, resulting from past admixture appears to have rendered a duller structural coloration. To compensate for reduced brightness, selection apparently resulted in extensive thickening of the carotenoid-laden barb cortex, producing the yellow crown coloration. The evolution of this unique crown-color signal likely culminated in premating isolation of the hybrid species from both parental species.

The perianth organs of six species of Nymphaeaceae, representing Euryale, Nymphaea and Victoria, were studied on the basis of macroscopical, micromorphological, and anatomical characters. The aims were to determine whether perianth is differentiated among tepal whorls considering the presence of sepaloid and petaloid characters, and to evaluate the occurrence of both features in individual tepals. Selected perianth series were examined macroscopically, with light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Osmophores were detected using neutral red and Sudan. In all tepals examined, stomata and hydropotes were present on the abaxial and adaxial surfaces. These are anomocytic or stephanocytic; hydropotes of irregular type are also present. The outer series of tepals display morpho-anatomical characters in most part related with photosynthetic and protective functions. Osmophore activity is very scarce and petaloid epidermal morphology is present only in N. lotus, thus allowing interpretation of this whorl as primarily sepaloid. The second series exhibits both petal-like and sepal-like characters; in N. amazonum and N. gardneriana sepaloid and petaloid group of cells are present on the abaxial surface of individual tepals. Therefore, this whorl is transitional between the outer and the innermost ones. Both the morpho-anatomy and presence of osmophore activity indicate that the innermost series is entirely petaloid. Inner tepals of E. ferox, N. alba, and V. cruziana share the presence of epidermal cells with predominantly smooth cuticle, whereas those of N. amazonum, N. gardneriana, and N. lotus share a cuticular ornamentation consisting of numerous papillae on each cell. Morphological characters of the perianth epidermis are in some respects congruent with the molecular phylogeny of Nymphaeaceae. Our results support the co-expression of sepaloidy and petaloidy within individual tepals and the mosaic model of perianth evolution proposed for the angiosperms.

Three new species of oribatid mites of the genus Pergalumna from a tropical rain forest in Veracruz, Mexico are described. Pergalumna hypergranulosa sp. nov. differs from Pergalumna granulatus Balogh & Mahunka, 1967 by unilaterally barbulated bothridial setae, elongated notogastric porose areas, and also a more profuse granulation of the cerotegument. Pergalumna obsidiana sp. nov. differs from P. granulatus by the unilateral barbulation of bothridial setae and the presence of protuberances on the genital plates; from Pergalumna paralongisetosa Ermilov & Kalúz, 2012 by a diverging cerotegumental granulation on the notogaster. Pergalumna dactylaris sp. nov. differs from Pergalumna striata (Pérez-Íñigo & Baggio, 1980) by its bigger size and the presence of three notogastric porose areas instead of four and from Pergalumna decorata Balogh & Mahunka, 1977, also by the bigger size, a different position of setae lm and la and smaller but not minute interlamellar setae. These are the first Mexican species descriptions of this genus.

Egg inundation often results in poor hatching success in crocodylians. However, how tolerant eggs are to submergence, and/or how eggshell ultrastructure may affect embryo survival when inundated, are not well understood. In this study, our objective was to determine if embryo survival in Caiman latirostris is affected by eggshell surface roughness, when eggs are submerged under water. Tolerance to inundation was tested early (day 30) versus late (day 60) in development, using eight clutches (four per time treatments), subdivided into four groups: (N = 9 per clutch per treatment; 9 × 4 = 36 eggs per group). 'Rough' eggshell represented the natural, unmodified eggshell surface structure. 'Smooth' eggshell surface structure was created by mechanically sanding the natural rough surface to remove surface columnar elements and secondary layer features, e.g. irregularities that result in 'roughness'. When inundated by submerging eggs under water for 10 h at day 30, 'smooth' eggshell structure resulted in more than twice as many dead embryos (16 versus 6, smooth versus rough; N = 36), and fewer than half as many healthy embryos (6 versus 13, smooth versus rough, respectively; N = 36). By contrast, at day 60, inundation resulted in very low hatching success, regardless of eggshell surface structure. Only two hatchlings survived the inundation, notably in the untreated group with intact, rough eggshells. Inundation produced a high rate of malformations (58% at day 30), but did not affect hatchling size. Our results indicate that eggshell roughness enhances embryo survival when eggs are inundated early in development, but not late in development. Apparently, the natural surface 'roughness' entraps air bubbles at the eggshell surface during inundation, thereby facilitating gas exchange through the eggshell even when the egg is submerged under water.

Yaminuechelys is a long-necked chelid turtle whose remains have been recovered from outcrops of the Santonian-Maastrichtian and Danian of South America. With the purpose of providing data about shell sculpturing origin and palaeoecology, the bone histology of several shell elements (including neural, costal, peripheral and plastral plates) of Yaminuechelys is described herein. Histological analysis reveals that Yaminuechelys shares with Chelidae the presence of interwoven structural fibre bundles in the external cortex, and parallel-fibred bone of the internal cortex. The presence of resorption lines in several samples indicates that the particular ornamentation of the external surfaces originated, at least in part, by focalized resorption and new bone deposition. This mechanism for ornamentation origin and maintenance is here described for the first time in a turtle. Compactness of the shell bones is consistent with an aquatic habitat, which supports previous hypothesis based on palaeoenvironmental and morphological data.

O valor ornamental das passifloras é atribuído especialmente à exuberância das flores, com suas formas, cores e tamanhos diversificados. Entre as espécies de Passiflora que apresentam potencial ornamental destaca-se a Passiflora suberosa L., que ocorre em regiões de cerrados, de florestas pluviais montanhosas, submontanhosas e de restingas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de diferentes temperaturas e tempos de imersão em água, na germinação de sementes de P. suberosa. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 11 tratamentos, gerados da combinação de cinco temperaturas (30, 40, 50, 60 e 70 ºC), dois tempos de imersão das sementes (5 e 15 minutos) em água aquecida e uma testemunha (sem tratamento), com quatro repetições, sendo 25 sementes por parcela. As características avaliadas foram: porcentagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, primeira contagem e porcentagem acumulada de germinação. Os resultados obtidos e analisados permitiram concluir que o melhor tratamento para superação de dormência é imersão em água destilada a 50 ºC por 5 minutos.
The ornamental value of passifloras is attributed especially to the exuberance of flowers, their shapes, colors and sizes varied. Among the species of Passiflora that have ornamental potential can cite the Passiflora suberosa L. occurring in regions of cerrados, rainforests to mountain, sub-mountainous and restingas. Ornamental value of Passiflora species is attributed especially to the exuberance of flowers, their shapes, colors and varied sizes. But there are many obstacles involving the process of conservation of these species, one of them is seed germination. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different temperatures and times of immersion in water germination of P.suberosa. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with 11 treatments, generated from the combination of five temperatures (30°C, 40°C, 50°C, 60°C and 70°C), two times of soaking seeds (5 minutes and 15 minutes) in heated water and a control (untreated) with four replications and 25 seeds per plot. The characteristics evaluated were: germination percentage, speed of germination, first count and cumulative percentage of germination. The results showed that for overcoming seeds dormancy is soaking in distilled water at 50ºC for 5 minutes.

Studies on reproductive aspects, spore morphology and ultrastructure of Lycopodiaceae are not very common in the scientific literature, and constitute essential information to support taxonomic and systematic relationships among the group. In order to complete existing information, adding new and broader contributions on these topics, a comparative analysis of the sporogenesis ultrastructure, with emphasis on cytological aspects of the sporocyte coat development, tapetum, monoplastidic and polyplastidic meiosis, sporoderm ontogeny and ornamentation of the mature spores, was carried out in 43 taxa of eight genera of the Lycopodiaceae: Austrolycopodium, Diphasium, Diphasiastrum, Huperzia (including Phlegmariurus), Lycopodium, Lycopodiella, Palhinhaea and Pseudolycopodiella growing in the Andes of Colombia and the Neotropics. For this study, the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) samples were collected in Cauca and Valle del Cauca Departments, while most of the spores for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were obtained from herbarium samples. We followed standard preparation procedures for spore observation by TEM and SEM. Results showed that the sporocyte coat is largely composed by primary wall components; the sporocyte develop much of their metabolic activity in the production of their coat, which is retained until the spores release; protective functions for the diploid cells undergoing meiosis is postulated here for this layer. The abundance of dictyosomes in the sporocyte cytoplasm was related to the formation and development of the sporocyte coat. Besides microtubule activity, the membrane of sporocyte folds, associated with electrodense material, and would early determine the final patterns of spore ornamentation. Monoplastidic condition is common in Lycopodium s.l., whereas polyplastidic condition was observed in species of Huperzia and Lycopodiella s. l.. In monoplastidic species, the tapetum presents abundant multivesicular bodies, while in polyplastidic species, the secretory activity of the tapetum is less intense. Sporoderm development is centripetal, exospore is the first formed layer, then the endospore and, if present, perispore is the final deposited layer. Adult spores of the Lycopodiaceae showed two patterns of ornamentation: negative or caviform (foveolate spores) and positive or muriform ornamentation, the latter with two subtypes (rugate and reticulate spores). The spores of Huperzia are characteristically foveolate, the rugate spores were found in a few species of Huperzia and in all of the Lycopodiella s. l. taxa studied, while Lycopodium s.l. spores bear reticulate ornamentation. Numerous ornamentation traits are diagnostic at the specific level. The types of ornamentation found do not support the recent extreme fragmentation of the family in several genera, but could match, a priori, with the idea of three subfamilies. The findings of sporogenesis, extremely similar in all taxa studied, point more to consider fewer genera, more comprehensive, than the recent, markedsplitting of the family. Rev. Biol. Estudios sobre aspectos reproductivos, morfología y ultraestructura de las esporas de Lycopodiaceae no son abundantes en la literatura científica y constituyen información esencial para apoyar las relaciones taxonómicas y sistemáticas en el grupo. Con el fin de completar la información existente, añadiendo contribuciones nuevas y más amplias sobre estos temas, se realizó un análisis comparado de la ultraestructura de la esporogénesis, con énfasis en aspectos citológicos que tienen que ver con la formación de la cubierta de los esporocitos, el tapete, las meiosis monoplastidial y poliplastidial, la ontogenia del esporodermo y la ornamentación de las esporas maduras en 43 táxones de ocho géneros de Lycopodiaceae: Austrolycopodium, Diphasium, Diphasiastrum, Huperzia (incluyendo Phlegmariurus), Lycopodium, Lycopodiella, Palhinhaea y Pseudolycopodiella que crecen en los Andes de Colombia y el Neotrópico. Para estudios con microscopía electrónica de trasmisión (MET) las muestras se recolectaron en los departamentos de Cauca y Valle del Cauca, mientras que la mayoría de las muestras para microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) provienen de material herborizado de colecciones. Para la observación de las muestras con MET y MEB se utilizaron protocolos estándar para el procesamiento de esporas. La cubierta de los esporocitos está formada por pared primaria; los esporocitos invierten gran parte de su actividad metabólica en la producción de esa cubierta, que es mantenida hasta la liberación de las esporas y tiene funciones de protección de las células que harán meiosis. La abundancia de dictiosomas en los esporocitos se relacionó con la formación y desarrollo de la cubierta. Además de la actividad de los microtúbulos, la presencia de sinuosidades y plegamientos asociados con material electro denso en la membrana de los esporocitos determinarían tempranamente los patrones de ornamentación de las esporas. La condición monoplastidial es común en Lycopodium s.l.y la poliplastidial se observó en Huperzia y Lycopodiella s. l. En especies monoplastidiales el tapete presenta abundantes cuerpos plurivesiculares, en las poliplastidiales la actividad secretora del tapete es menos intensa. El desarrollo del esporodermo es centrípeto, el exosporio se forma primero, seguido del endosporio y el perisporio, si está presente, se deposita de último. En las esporas adultas de Lycopodiaceae se encontraron dos patrones de ornamentación: negativo o caviforme (esporas foveoladas) y positivo o muriforme (esporas rugadas y reticuladas). Las esporas foveoladas son características de Huperzia; las rugadas de unas pocas especies de Huperzia y las especies de Lycopodiella s. l., mientras que las reticulada son típicas de Lycopodium s. l.. Numerosos caracteres de la ornamentación resultan diagnósticos en el nivel específico. Los tipos principales no apoyan la extrema fragmentación reciente de la familia en varios géneros, aunque podría coincidir, a priori, con la idea de tres subfamilias. Los hallazgos de la esporogénesis, extremadamente similar en todos los táxones estudiados, apuntan más a la unificación de los géneros en la familia que a su segregación.

Calcified spines in the hemipenial surface occur convergently in several gymnophthalmid lizard species and in advanced snakes. Based on the pronounced degrees of limb reduction in these distantly related lineages, such hemipenial structures were suggested to play a functional role in couple-anchoring during copulation, partly assuming the function of the limbs during mating. Herein, we assessed the hemipenial morphology of virtually all the valid genera of the family Gymnophthalmidae to test for a phylogenetic correlation between limb reduction and the presence of calcified hemipenial spines. The occurrence of calcified structures was mapped on the two most comprehensive phylogenies of the family. We concluded that spiny hemipenes are by no means necessarily associated with reduction of limbs. Conversely, the presence of well-developed hemipenial spines in specific limb-reduced taxa does not allow one to disregard the possibility that in some instances such structures might indeed be functionally associated with couple-anchoring, improving the success of mating.

Sexual signal evolution can be complex because multiple factors influence the production, transmission, and reception of sexual signals, as well as receivers' responses to them. To grasp the relative importance of these factors in generating signal diversity, we must simultaneously investigate multiple selective agents and signaling traits within a natural system. We use the model system of the radiation of Bahamas mosquitofish (Gambusia hubbsi) inhabiting blue holes to test the effects of resource availability, male body size and other life-history traits, key aspects of the transmission environment, sex ratio, and predation risk on variation in multiple male color traits. Consistent with previous work examining other traits in this system, several color traits have repeatedly diverged between predation regimes, exhibiting greater elaboration in the absence of predators. However, other factors proved influential as well, with variation in resource levels, body size, relative testes size, and background water color being especially important for several color traits. For one prominent signaling trait, orange dorsal fins, we further confirmed a genetic basis underlying population differences using a laboratory common-garden experiment. We illustrate a promising approach for gaining a detailed understanding of the many contributing factors in the evolution of multivariate sexual signals.

Spores morphology and synangia in neotropical fern species of Marattia (Marattiaceae). The Marattiaceae are represented by a small family of four to six genera that bear esporogenous structures of two types: sorus with free eusporangia in Angiopteris and Archangiopteris, and indurated synangium in Christensenia, Danaea and Marattia. Marattia is a pantropical genus of about eight to ten species in the paleotropic and seven to eight species in the neotropic. In order to describe the spores and sinangia morphology, this study analyzed the shape of the receptacles, and the position of the synangia, and evaluated the spores with SEM, of seven neotropical species of the genus Marattia: M. alata, M. cicutifolia, M. excavata, M. interposita, M. laevis, M. laxa y M. weinmanniifolia from several collections. The receptacles were fully developed in M. cicutifolia and M. laevis, and scarcely overelevated in the rest of the species. The synangium was ellipsoidal and had intramarginal to supramedial position in the laminae. The spores of Marattia were elliptic. Among the taxa, only monolete spores were found, with no trilete, aborted or deformed spores. The laesura was linear and reached about two of the total length of the spore. The perispore appears as a continuous thin layer deposited on the exospore according to its ornamentation in M. cicutifolia and M. laevis. It is smooth in M. alata, rugate in M. excavata and pustulate-rugate in two species: M. interposita and M. laxa. The exospore is echinate in M. cicutifolia and M. laevis and pustulate in the other species. In M. weinmannifolia spores produced by the same sinangium may have different ornamentation types. We concluded that, while the presence of ellipsoidal and superficial synangia and monolete spores aperture were generic traits, the micro and macro-ornamentation types of the perispores and exospores vary at specific level. Besides, macro-ornamentation can be bulliform (pustulate), a combination of bulliform and muriform types (pustulate-rugate), muriform (rugate-retate) and stelliform (echinate); finally, granular micro-ornamentation can be seen frecuently in perispores. La familia Marattiaceae, que incluye de cuatro a seis géneros, presenta estructuras esporógenas de dos tipos: sinangios en Christensenia, Danaea y Marattia; y soros con eusporangios libres en Angiopteris y Archangiopteris. Marattia es un género pantropical con unas ocho-diez especies en el paleotrópico y siete-ocho en el neotrópico. Mediante MEB se estudiaron las esporas de las siete especies neotropicales de Marattia: M. alata, M. cicutifolia, M.excavata, M. interposita, M. laevis, M. laxa y M. weinmanniifolia, basado en la forma de los receptáculos y la posición de los sinangios en material proveniente de distintas colecciones. Los receptáculos son hiperdesarrollados en M. cicutifolia y M. laevis, y apenas sobreelevados en el resto de las especies. Los sinangios son elipsoidales y la posición en la lámina es intramarginal a medial. Las esporas son elípticas, siempre monoletes y no se encuentran esporas triletes, abortadas o deformadas. La lesura tiene una longitud aproximadamente igual a la mitad del diámetro de la espora. El perisporio aparece como una capa delgada continua que se deposita siguiendo los procesos del exosporio, en M. cicutifolia y M. laevis. Es liso en M. alata, rugado en M. excavata y pustulado-rugado en dos especies: M. interposita y M. laxa. El exosporio es equinado en M. cicutifolia y M. laevis, y pustulado en las otras especies. En M. weinmanniifolia, las esporas producidas por el mismo sinangio tienen diferentes tipos de ornamentación. La presencia de sinangios elipsoidales superficiales y de esporas monoletes, son rasgos genéricos; mientras que los tipos de micro-ornamentación y macroornamentación en exosporios y perisporios son caracteres diagnósticos específicos. La macro-ornamentación puede ser buliforme (pustulada), una combinación de buliforme y muriforme (pustulada-rugada), muriforme (rugada-retiada) y esteliforme (equinada); es frecuente la presencia de micro-ornamentación granular en el perisporio.

Pollen morphology in species of Canna (Cannaceae), and systematics implications. The morphology of pollen grains of eight taxa of Canna, C. ascendens, C. coccinea, C. compacta, C. glauca, C. indica, C. paniculata, C. variegatifolia and C. fuchsina, an unpublished new species, were studied using light and scanning electronic microscopes. We used the Wodehouse technique on samples of 20 grains per specimen to measure the intine with a light microscope; and the density of spines (in 400μm2 fields) with scanning electronic microscopy. Pollen grains are spherical, echinate, omniaperturate. The sporoderm presents a very thin exine covering a thicker intine. Corrugate micro-perforate, sub-reticulate, rugate, rugulate, striate to folded, micro-striate, micro-granulate, and smooth types of the external surface of the sporoderm were found. The spines consist of exine, partially to completely covered by tryphine. The two-layered intine is the thicker part of the wall. Echinate ornamentation is a generic character in Canna, but size, surface and color of pollen walls, and density and shape of spines, are diagnostic for species. Pollen morphology supports the view of C. indica and C. coccinea as different species. Canna fuchsina grows in wild, dense colonies, in humid riverside forests from Buenos Aires and Santa Fe Provinces, Argentina; its characters suggest relationships with a not well known group of taxa, some of them hybrids, such as C. x generalis. However, as these plants showed normal, well formed grains, close to those of C. coccinea, that germinate over the stigmatic surfaces in fresh flowers, we decided to include their pollen in this study. Se estudió la morfología de los granos de polen de ocho táxones de Canna, C. ascendens, C. coccinea, C. compacta, C. glauca, C. indica, C. paniculata, C. variegatifolia y C. fuchsina, nueva especie aún no descrita, que fueron estudiadas usando microscopio de luz y microscopio electrónico de barrido. Nosotros utilizamos la técnica de Wodehouse en muestras de 20 granos por espécimen para medir la intina con el microscopio de luz; y la densidad de espinas (en campos de 400μm2) con el microscopio electrσnico de barrido. Los granos de polen son esfιricos, equinados y omniaberturados. El esporodermo presenta una exina muy delgada cubriendo una intina gruesa. La superficie del esporodermo puede ser corrugada, microperforada, sub-reticulada, rugada, rugulada, plegada-estriada, micro-estriada, microgranulada o lisa. Las espinas están formadas por exina, cubiertas total o parcialmente por trifina. La intina esta formada por dos capas, es la parte más gruesa de la pared. La ornamentación equinada es un rasgo genérico en Canna, pero el tamaño, la superficie y el color del polen, y la densidad y forma de las espinas, son rasgos diagnósticos de las especies. La morfología del polen apoya el tratamiento de C. coccinea y C. indica como especies diferentes. Canna fuchsina crece formando densas colonias silvestres en selvas ribereñas húmedas de las provincias de Buenos Aires y Santa Fe, Argentina; sus características sugieren relaciones no muy bien entendidas en el grupo de taxones, algunos son híbridos tales como C. x generalis. Sin embargo, estas plantas muestran granos normales, bien formados, cercanos a los de C. coccinea, que germinan sobre el estigma de flores frescas, nosotros decidimos incluir su polen en este estudio.

Six medicinal herbaceous Phyllanthus L. (Phyllanthaceae) species, P. tenellus Roxb., P. niruri L., P. stipulatus (Raf.) Webster, P. urinaria L., P. caroliniensis Walt., and P. amarus Schum. & Thonn. are difficult to distinguish. In order to solve this problem, the ornamentation of the seed surfaces was analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscopy). Differences between lateral, dorsal and ventral surfaces were observed. The seeds were cut into sections at different angles, exposing testa sculptures. Three types of surface ornamentation patterns were observed and they showed to be avaluable diagnostic.
Seis espécies herbáceas de Phyllanthus L. (P. tenellus Roxb., P. niruri L., P. stipulatus (Raf.) Webster, P. urinaria L., P. caroliniensis Walt. e P. amarus Schum. & Thonn.) mencionadas como medicinais apresentam dificuldades na identificação. Com o objetivo de auxiliar neste problema e determinar diferenças entre as espécies, o padrão de ornamentação das sementes foi estudado utilizando técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). As sementes apresentaram ornamentação distinta, sendo observadas as superfícies laterais, dorsais e ventrais. As espécies puderam ser separadas em três tipos de ornamentação, que demonstraram importância como caractere diagnóstico para a sua separação.

Analysis of a larger number of specimens provided a more precise characterization of the genus and the type species. Additionally, two new species are described based on material already available in museums and new collections. Physopyxis lyra is characterized by having a well developed coracoid process with divergent tips, and only one series of spines on the lateral plates. Physopyxis ananas, new species, has a thin coracoid process, convergent, and more than one series of spines on the lateral plates. Physopyxis cristata, new species, is a slender species, characterized by an incomplete series of lateral plates and the presence of a middorsal series of spines formed by the tips of the vertebral neural spines. The poorly known geographic distribution of the genus Physopyxis is vastly enlarged to include various drainages of the Amazon and Essequibo basins.

Análises de um grande número de exemplares possibilitou uma caracterização mais precisa do gênero e da espécie tipo. Adicionalmente, duas novas espécies são descritas com base em material disponível em museus e em exemplares coletados recentemente. Physopyxis lyra é caracterizado por possuir um processo coracóide muito desenvolvido com as extremidades voltadas para fora, e por apresentar placas laterais com apenas uma fileira de espinhos. Physopyxis ananas, espécie nova, possui processo coracóide estreito e ligeiramente convergente, com mais de uma fileira de espinhos ao longo das placas laterais.
