RESUMO

In this study, a self-healing epoxy asphalt material was developed by incorporating coumarin groups. This material achieved microcrack self-repair under UV irradiation at 50 °C. Fluorescence microscopy observations and mechanical performance tests demonstrated significant advantages in crack filling and mechanical property recovery after repair, with the fracture toughness of the repaired epoxy asphalt reaching 69% of that in its original state. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of temperature and UV irradiation in the self-healing process enhanced the material's durability and service life. This research offers new insights and methods for developing more durable and long-lasting self-healing asphalt materials, showcasing the great potential of smart materials in infrastructure applications.

RESUMO

The surface photochemical activity of goethite, which occurs widely in surface soils and sediments, plays a crucial role in the environmental transformation of various pollutants and natural organic matter. This study systemically investigated the mechanism of different types of surface hydroxyl groups on goethite in generating reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and Fe(III) reduction under sunlight irradiation. Surface hydroxyl groups were found to induce photoreductive dissolution of Fe(III) at the goethite-water interface to produce Fe2+(aq), while promoting the production of ROSs. Substitution of the surface hydroxyl groups on goethite by fluoride significantly inhibited the photochemical activity of goethite, demonstrating their important role in photochemical activation of goethite. The results showed that the surface hydroxyl groups (especially the terminating hydroxyl groups, ≡FeOH) led to the formation of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes via ligand-metal charge transfer on the goethite surface upon photoexcitation, facilitating the production of Fe2+(aq) and •OH. The bridging hydroxyl groups (≡Fe2OH) were shown to mainly catalyze the production of H2O2, leading to the subsequent light-driven Fenton reaction to produce •OH. These findings provide important insights into the activation of molecular oxygen on the goethite surface driven by sunlight in the environment, and the corresponding degradation of anthropogenic and natural organic compounds caused by the generated ROSs.

RESUMO

A flow photochemical reaction system for a π-Lewis acidic metal-catalyzed cyclization/radical addition sequence was developed, which utilizes in situ-generated 2-benzopyrylium intermediates as the photoredox catalyst and electrophilic substrates. The key 2-benzopyrylium intermediates were generated in the flow reaction system through the intramolecular cyclization of ortho-carbonyl alkynylbenzene derivatives by the π-Lewis acidic metal catalyst AgNTf2 and the subsequent proto-demetalation with trifluoroacetic acid. The 2-benzopyrylium intermediates underwent further photoreactions with benzyltrimethylsilane derivatives as the donor molecule in the flow photoreactor to provide 1H-isochromene derivatives in higher yields in most cases than the batch reaction system.

RESUMO

The sensitivity analysis of ozone generation in key ozone-polluted regions and cities is an important basis for the prevention and control of near-surface ozone (O3) pollution. Based on the five-year data of ozone, VOCs, and NOx from three typical stations in Shanghai, namely Dianshan Lake Station (suburban area), Pudong Station (urban area), and Xinlian Station (industrial area) from 2016 to 2020, the nonlinear relationship between ozone and precursors (VOCs and NOx) during the high-ozone season in the five years was quantitatively analyzed using an observation model. The results showed that the peak months of near-surface ozone in Shanghai were from April to September during 2016 to 2020, with the highest values appearing from June to August. The volume fraction of VOCs and NO2 concentration had a strong indicative significance for the O3 concentration at Pudong Station. The O3 concentration at Dianshan Lake Station was mainly influenced by regional environment, meteorological factors, and cross-regional transmission. The ozone concentration at Xinlian Station was a combination of environmental background concentration and industrial area photochemical pollution. Pudong Station and Dianshan Lake Station were in the VOCs control zone. Xinlian Station was gradually closer to the NOx control zone from 2016 to 2019, transitioning to the VOCs control zone since 2020. The L·OH of Pudong Station, Dianshan Lake Station, and Xinlian Station were: NOx control area>collaborative control area>VOCs control area.

RESUMO

Dissecting the photochemical reactivity of metal ions is a significant contribution to understanding secondary pollutant formation, as they have a role to be reckoned with atmospheric chemistry. However, their photochemical reactivity has received limited attention within the active nitrogen cycle, particularly at the gas-solid interface. In this study, we delve into the contribution of magnesium ion (Mg2+) and ferric ion (Fe3+) to nitrate decomposition on the surface of photoactive mineral dust. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the observed NOX production rate differs by an order of magnitude in the presence of Mg2+ (6.02 × 10-10 mol s-1) and Fe3+ (2.07 × 10-11 mol s-1). The markedly decreased fluorescence lifetime induced by Mg2+ and the change in the valence of Fe3+ revealed that Mg2+ and Fe3+ significantly affect the concentration of nitrate decomposition products by distinct photochemical reactivity with photogenerated electrons. Mg2+ promotes NOX production by accelerating charge transfer, while Fe3+ hinders nitrate decomposition by engaging in a redox cyclic reaction with Fe2+ to consume photogenerated carriers continuously. Furthermore, when Fe3+ coexists with other metal ions (e.g., Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, and K+) and surpasses a proportion of approximately 12%, the photochemical reactivity of Fe3+ tends to be dominant in depleting photogenerated electrons and suppressing nitrate decomposition. Conversely, below this threshold, the released NOX concentration increases sharply as the proportion of Fe3+ decreases. This research offers valuable insights into the role of metal ions in nitrate transformation and the generation of reactive nitrogen species, contributing to a deep understanding of atmospheric photochemical reactions.

RESUMO

Atmospheric aerosols have a serious impact on altering the radiation balance of the vulnerable Himalayan atmosphere. Organic aerosol (OA), one of the least resolved aerosol fractions in the Himalayas, constrain our competence to assess their climate impacts on the region. Here we investigate water-soluble OA molecules in PM10 samples collected from March to May 2019 at Lachung (27.4°N and 88.4°E), a high-altitude location (2700 m a.s.l.) in the eastern Himalaya, to elucidate their origin and formation process. The dominance of oxalic acid (C2) reveals that water-soluble OA in the eastern Himalaya are atmospherically processed. Backward air mass trajectories and mass concentration ratios of organic tracers as well as relationships with inorganic species (K+, SO42-, NH4+) suggest an anthropogenic origin of water-soluble OA with significant atmospheric processing during long-range transport to the eastern Himalayan region. We used the thermodynamic prediction of aerosol liquid water (ALW) to examine the formation mechanism of secondary OA (SOA) such as oxalic acid. Correlations of ALW with SO42- and water-soluble organic matter show that ALW is sensitive to both anthropogenic sulfate and water-soluble organic compounds in Himalayan aerosols. A strong positive relationship of C2 acid with predicted ALW provides evidence of extensive SOA formation from precursors via aqueous phase photochemical processes. This inference is supported by positive correlations of C2 acid relative abundance with diagnostic mass concentration ratios of C2 acid to precursor molecules. Our findings underscore the importance of anthropogenic sources and ALW in SOA formation through aqueous phase processes in the eastern Himalaya.

RESUMO

Herein, we describe a visible light-induced C(sp2)-H arylation method for quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and coumarins using iodonium ylides without the need for external photocatalysts. The protocol demonstrates a broad substrate scope, enabling the arylation of diverse heterocycles through a simple and mild procedure. Furthermore, the photochemical reaction showcases its applicability in the efficient synthesis of biologically active molecules. Computational investigations at the CASPT2//CASSCF/PCM level of theory revealed that the excited state of quinoxalin-2(1H)-one facilitates electron transfer from its π bond to the antibonding orbital of the C-I bond in the iodonium ylide, ultimately leading to the formation of an aryl radical, which subsequently participates in the C-H arylation process. In addition, our calculations reveal that during the single-electron transfer (SET) process, the C-I bond cleavage in iodonium ylide and new C-C bond formation between resultant aryl radical and cationic quinoxaline species take place in a concerned manner. This enables the arylation reaction to efficiently proceed along an energy-efficient route.

RESUMO

Currently, microplastics (MPs) have ubiquitously distributed in different aquatic environments. Due to the unique physicochemical properties, MPs exhibit a variety of environmental effects with the coexisted contaminants. MPs can not only alter the migration of contaminants via vector effect, but also affect the transformation process and fate of contaminants via environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs). The aging processes may enhance the interaction between MPs and co-existed contaminants. Thus, it is of great significance to review the aging mechanism of MPs and the influence of coexisted substances, the formation mechanism of EPFRs, environmental effects of MPs and relevant mechanism. Moreover, microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) may also influence the elemental biogeochemical cycles and the relevant environmental processes. However, the environmental implications of MP-DOM are rarely outlined. Finally, the knowledge gaps on environmental effects of MPs were proposed.

RESUMO

We have established a facile and efficient protocol for the generation of germyl radicals by employing photo-excited electron transfer (ET) in an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex to drive hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) from germyl hydride (R3GeH). Using a catalytic amount of EDA complex of commercially available thiol and benzophenone derivatives, the ET-HAT cycle smoothly proceeds simply upon blue-light irradiation without any transition metal or photocatalyst. This protocol also affords silyl radical from silyl hydride.

RESUMO

Activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances (ASEPSs) comprise most dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the tail water. However, the understanding of the link between the photolysis of antibiotic and the photo-reactivity/photo-persistence of ASEPS components is limited. This study first investigated the photochemical behaviors of ASEPS's components (humic acids (HA), hydrophobic substances (HOS) and hydrophilic substances (HIS)) separated from municipal sludge's EPS (M-EPS) and nitrification sludge's EPS (N-EPS) in the photolysis of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The results showed that 60% of SDZ was removed by the M-EPS, but the effect in the separated components was weakened, and only 24% - 39% was degraded. However, 58% of SDZ was cleaned by HOS in N-EPS, which was 23% higher than full N-EPS. M-EPS components had lower steady-state concentrations of triplet intermediates (3EPS*), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) than M-EPS, but N-EPS components had the highest concentrations (5.96 ×10-15, 8.44 ×10-18, 4.56 ×10-13 M, respectively). The changes of CO, C-O and O-CO groups in HA and HOS potentially correspond to reactive specie's generation. These groups change little in HIS, which may make it have radiation resistance. HCO-3 and NO-3 decreased the indirect photolysis of SDZ, and its by-product N-(2-Pyrimidinyl)1,4-benzenediamine presents high environmental risk.

RESUMO

To investigate disparities in VOCs pollution characteristics, O3 generation activity, and source apportionment outcomes resulting from photooxidation, online monitoring of 106 VOCs was conducted in Jinshan District, Shanghai from April to October 2020. The observed VOCs concentrations (VOCs-obs) were 47.1 ppbv and 59.2 ppbv for clear days (CD) and O3-polluted days (OPD), respectively. The increase in daytime concentrations of alkenes is a significant factor contributing to the enhanced atmospheric photochemical activity during the OPD period, corroborated by VOCs-loss, ozone formation potential (OFP), propy-equiv concentration, and LOH. The sensitivity analysis of O3-NOx-VOCs indicated that O3 formation was in a transitional regime towards NOx-limited conditions. The results of positive matrix factorization (PMF) demonstrated that refining and petrochemicals (20.8-25.0 %), along with oil and gas evaporation (15.6-16.7 %) were the main sources of VOCs concentrations. Notably, source apportionment based on VOCs-obs underestimated the contributions from sources of reactive components. It is worth highlighting that the sunlight impact & background source was identified as the major contributor to LOH (21.6 %) and OFP (25.3 %), signifying its significant role in O3 formation. This study reiterates the importance of controlling reactive VOC components to mitigate O3 pollution and provides a scientific foundation for air quality management, with emphasis on priority species and controlling sources.

RESUMO

To develop advanced optical systems, many scientists have endeavored to create smart optical materials which can tune their photophysical properties by changing molecular states. However, optical multi-states are obtained usually by mixing many dyes or stacking multi-layered structures. Here, multiple molecular states are tried to be generated with a single dye. In order to achieve the goal, a diacetylene-functionalized cyanostilbene luminogen (DACSM) is newly synthesized by covalently connecting diacetylene and cyanostilbene molecular functions. Photochemical reaction of cyanostilbene and topochemical polymerization of diacetylene can change the molecular state of DACSM. By thermal stimulations and the photochemical reaction, the conformation of polymerized DACSM is further tuned. The synergetic molecular cooperation of cyanostilbene and diacetylene generates multiple molecular states of DACSM. Utilizing the optical multi-states achieved from the newly developed DACSM, switchable optical patterns and smart secret codes are successfully demonstrated.

RESUMO

Deciphering drought resistance in crops is crucial for enhancing water productivity. Previous studies have highlighted the significant role of the transcription factor SlHB8 in regulating developmental processes in tomato plants but its involvement in drought resistance remains unclear. Here, gene overexpression (SlHB8-OE) and gene knockout (slhb8) tomato plants were utilized to study the role of SlHB8 in regulating drought resistance. Our findings showed that slhb8 plants exhibited a robust resistant phenotype under drought stress conditions. The stomata of slhb8 tomato leaves displayed significant closure, effectively mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress on photosynthetic efficiency. The slhb8 plants exhibited a decrease in oxidative damage and a substantial increase in antioxidant enzyme activity. Moreover, slhb8 effectively alleviated the degree of photoinhibition and chloroplast damage caused by drought stress. SlHB8 regulates the expression of numerous genes related to photosynthesis (such as SlPSAN, SlPSAL, SlPSBP, and SlTIC62) and stress signal transduction (such as SlCIPK25, SlABA4, and SlJA2) in response to drought stress. Additionally, slhb8 plants exhibited enhanced water absorption capacity and upregulated expression of several aquaporin genes including SlPIP1;3, SlPIP2;6, SlTIP3;1, SlNIP1;2, and SlXIP1;1. Collectively, our findings suggest that SlHB8 plays a negative regulatory role in the drought resistance of tomato plants.

RESUMO

Neutral low-molecular-weight organics such as methyl nitrate that can readily pass through reverse osmosis (RO) membranes employed in potable water reuse facilities attract interest owing to public health considerations. In this study, a novel determination method based on high-performance liquid chromatography, online photochemical conversion to peroxynitrite, and luminol chemiluminescence detection was developed for methyl nitrate measurement in treated water. The maximum photochemical conversion efficiency of methyl nitrate to peroxynitrite was found to be 6.5% using a 222-nm excimer lamp. The calibration curve for the developed method was linear between 1.0 × 10-9 and 1.0 × 10-7 M, and the limit of detection was 0.3 nM (0.03 µg/L) given an injection volume of 200 µL. The methyl nitrate concentrations in RO permeate from reclaimed wastewater and product water after subsequent treatment by a UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation process (AOP) were 2.2 and 22.5 nM (0.17 and 1.7 µg/L), respectively. UV irradiation of RO permeate in the laboratory using a low-pressure Hg lamp confirmed the formation of methyl nitrate in the permeate in the absence of H2O2 and residual chloramines. This chemiluminescent detection method for methyl nitrate will promote a greater understanding of the origin and formation of this treatment byproduct in reclaimed wastewater.

RESUMO

With the increase of urban building height, people pay more and more attention to the characteristics of pollutants in urban canopy height. This study combined the generalized additive model (GAM) and the observation-based model (OBM) to explore the vertical characteristics and drivers of ozone (O3) based on meteorology tower (200 m) data to quantify the effects of factors and photochemical reactions on O3 formation at different heights. The F values of GAM reflect the importance of each factor, indicating that NO (F is 33.99 in the peak season, 36.72 in the non-peak season) was the dominant driver of O3 and was more important in the lower layer (20-116 m). Temperature (F is 35.42) was the main contributor to O3 pollution in the peak season, especially for O3 in the upper layer (116-200 m). The net O3 production rate in the peak season was 1.47 times that in the non-peak season due to strong photochemical reactions and meteorological conditions. And the net O3 production rate decreased sharply with increasing height in the two seasons. Less net O3 production in the upper layer was accompanied by a higher O3 mixing ratio, which indicated that there was more background O3 in the upper layer. OBM model results showed that the reaction between hydroperoxyl radical (HO2) and NO was the primary contribution pathway, accounting for 54.00 % and 57.50 % in the peak and non-peak seasons, respectively. O3 formation was highly sensitive to VOCs, while NOx reduction could have positive or negative effects on O3 depending on the levels of hydroxyl radical (OH). The understanding of the formation mechanism of O3 and the influence of NO on O3 provides insights into the importance of anthropogenic activities at urban canopy heights in shaping the vertical structure of O3.

RESUMO

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is a typical secondary photochemical product in the atmospheric environment with significant adverse effects on human health and plant growth. In this study, PAN and other pollutants, as well as meteorological conditions were observed intensively from August to September in 2022 at a typical urban sampling site in Beijing, China. The mean and maximum PAN concentrations during the observation period were 1.00 ± 0.97 ppb and 4.84 ppb, respectively. Severe photochemical pollution occurred during the observation period, with the mean PAN concentration about 3.1 times higher than that during the clean period. There was a good positive correlation between O3 and PAN, and their correlation was higher during the O3 exposure period than that during the clean period. The simulated results by box-model coupled with the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM v3.3.1) showed that the O3-related reactions were the largest sources of OH radicals during O3 exposure period, which was conducive to the co-contamination of PAN and O3. Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) and methylglyoxal (MGLY) were the largest OVOCs precursors of peroxyacetyl radicals (PA), with the contributions to the total PA generated by OVOCs about 67 % - 83 % and 17 % - 30 %, respectively. The reduction of emissions from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and solvent usage has the highest reduction effect on PAN and O3, followed by the control of gasoline vehicle exhaust emissions. This study deepens the understanding of the PAN photochemistry in urban areas with high O3 background conditions and the impact of anthropogenic activities on the photochemical pollution. Meanwhile, the findings of this study highlight the necessity of strengthening anthropogenic emissions control to effectively reduce the co-contamination of PAN and O3 in Beijing in the future.

RESUMO

Anionic silicone surfactants have long been a neglected field. In this paper three anionic silicone surfactants were synthesized first time from dichloromethylvinylsilane through hydrolysis-condensation, "thiol-ene" photo- chemical and then salting reaction. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension, minimum surface area per surfactant molecule and surface pressure at CAC were studied by both surface tension and electrical conductivity. The results showed that they had significant surface activity at the gas/liquid interface and were capable to reduce the surface tension of water to approximately 20 mN m-1 . The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that the three silicone surfactants self-assembled into spherical aggregates of uniform size in aqueous solution above the CAC. The dynamic light scattering results demonstrated that the size of the aggregates was determined to be in the range from 60 to 300 nm at 0.05 mol L-1 and the order of the size of the aggregates is (Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Li<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Na<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 K.

RESUMO

There is substantial evidence that photochemical reactions in the atmosphere cause physico-chemical transformation of combustion smoke, but how this processing modifies potential health effects in exposed populations is not well understood. Here we utilized a new approach to simulate photochemical aging of anthropogenic smoke emissions (a mixture of plastic, plywood, and cardboard smoke) from two different burning conditions (smoldering vs. flaming) and investigated their adverse outcomes associated with mutagenic activity and the relative potencies of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Aging resulted in increased oxygenated volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions but largely degraded particle-bound PAH components in the smoke. Chemical transformation during aging was more dramatic for flaming versus smoldering smoke. Due to the PAH degradation, mutagenicity of the aged smoke from flaming combustion was much lower (up to 4 times) than that of the fresh smoke on per-particle mass basis. However, on the basis of particle emitted per fuel mass burned, the aged and fresh smoke particles exhibited similar mutagenic activities, which were up to 3 times higher for smoldering versus flaming smoke emissions. Similarly, the PAH toxicity equivalent (PAH-TEQ) of the aged smoldering smoke was 3 times higher than that of the aged flaming smoke particles, suggesting that some PAHs (e.g., indeno[c,d]pyrene and benzo[b]fluoranthene) in the smoldering smoke were more photochemically stable during aging. These findings increase understanding of the evolution of smoke emitted at different burning conditions and the role of photochemical transformations on mutagenicity and PAH-induced toxicity.

RESUMO

The secondary component is an important factor causing PM2.5 pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration in winter. In this study, the CO tracer method was used to estimate the secondary PM2.5 concentration of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration in the winter of 2017-2021. The temporal and spatial distribution characteristics were analyzed, and the influencing factors of regional secondary PM2.5 were discussed. The results showed that the decreasing trend of PM2.5 concentration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region in the winter of 2017-2021 was obvious, and the cities with the largest decline were located in the central and southern part of Hebei Province, mainly contributed by primary PM2.5. There was a good correlation between secondary PM2.5 and PM2.5 in all cities of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, and the proportion of secondary PM2.5 in Beijing and Tianjin was significantly higher than that in other cities. With the aggravation of pollution degree, the mass concentration of primary PM2.5 and secondary PM2.5 increased in varying degrees, and the proportion of secondary PM2.5 increased significantly. Compared with the direct measurement results, the estimated value obtained by this method was lower as a whole. The selection of appropriate primary aerosol reference value was the key to improving this method and estimating the secondary PM2.5 concentration.

RESUMO

Over the past decades, the pollution of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the atmosphere has become a major concern worldwide due to their adverse effects on human health, air quality and climate. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are crucial precursors of O3 and SOA, but identifying the primary sources of VOCs that contribute to the formation of O3 and SOA has been challenging due to the rapid consumption of VOCs by oxidants in the air. To address this issue, a study was conducted in a Taipei urban area in Taiwan, where the hourly data of 54 VOC species were collected from March 2020 to February 2021 detected by Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Stations (PAMS). The initial mixing ratios of VOCs (VOCsini) were determined by combining the observed VOCs (VOCsobs) and the consumed VOCs resulting from photochemical reactions. Additionally, the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) were estimated based on VOCsini. The OFP derived from VOCsini (OFPini) was found to exhibit a strong correlation with O3 mixing ratios (R2 = 0.82), whereas the OFP obtained from VOCsobs did not show such a correlation. Isoprene, toluene and m,p-xylene were the top three species contributing to OFPini, while toluene and m,p-xylene were the top two contributors to SOAFPini. Positive matrix factorization analysis revealed that biogenic, consumer/household products, and industrial solvents were the major contributors to OFPini in four seasons, and SOAFPini mostly came from consumer/household products and industrial solvents. This study highlights the importance of considering photochemical loss caused by different VOCs reactivity in the atmosphere when evaluating OFP and SOAFP. Moreover, it emphasizes the need to prioritize controlling the sources emitting the dominant VOC precursors of O3 and SOA to effectively alleviate the scenarios of elevated O3 and particulate matter.
