The family Sarcophagidae is very diverse in Brazil. Due to their living habits, they are the subject of many medical, veterinary, sanitary, and entomological studies. However, Sarcophagidae species are still poorly studied in forensic entomology, although they are frequently reported in carcasses and even human corpses. Thus, this study aims to identify and compare the developmental stages and intrapuparial morphological characteristics of Peckia (Euboettcheria) collusor to serve as an auxiliary tool in forensic entomology. The pupae collected after zero hour at 27 °C and 32 °C were sacrificed every three hours until the first 24 h and then every six hours until the emergence of the first adults, using 30 pupae each time, totaling 1560 for 27 °C and 1290 for 32 °C. The intrapuparial development time of this fly species under laboratory-controlled conditions was 288 h at 27 °C and 228 h at 32 °C. The 2820 pupae were analyzed according to temperature and classified into eight possible stages. This contributed to the selection of 16 key morphological characteristics to identify the age of the pupae. The identified intrapupal morphological characteristics have great potential to help researchers, experts, technical assistants, and forensic entomologists estimate the minimum post-mortem interval (minPMI) of cadavers.

Wild terrestrial carnivores play a crucial role as reservoir, maintenance, and spillover hosts for a wide parasite variety. They may harbor, shed, and transmit zoonotic parasites and parasites of veterinary importance for domestic hosts. Although wild carnivores are globally distributed and comprise many different species, some living in close proximity to human settlements, only a few studies have investigated parasites of wild terrestrial carnivores using non-specific techniques. Access to samples of wild carnivores may be challenging as some species are protected, and others are secretive, possibly explaining the data paucity. Considering the importance of wild carnivores' health and ecological role, combined with the lack of specific diagnostic methodologies, this review aims to offer an overview of the diagnostic methods for parasite investigation in wild terrestrial carnivores, providing the precise techniques for collection and analysis of fecal, blood, and tissue samples, the environmental impact on said samples, and the limitations researchers currently face in analyzing samples of wild terrestrial carnivores. In addition, this paper offers some crucial information on how different environmental factors affect parasite detection postmortem and how insects can be used to estimate the time of death with a specific highlight on insect larvae. The paper contains a literature review of available procedures and emphasizes the need for diagnostic method standardization in wild terrestrial carnivores.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary post-mortem donation to science (PDS) is the most appropriate source for body dissection in medical education and training, and highly useful for biomedical research. In Mexico, unclaimed bodies are no longer a legal source, but PDS is legally possible, although scarcely facilitated, and mostly ignored by the general population. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the attitude and willingness for PDS and to identify a sociodemographic profile of people with willingness toward PDS. METHODS: A validated on-line survey was distributed by the convenience method via the social networks of a Catholicism-inspired, private university in northern Mexico. Frequency analyses of all variables and coded free comments were complemented with association studies. RESULTS: Although the responder cohort (n = 143) was too small and biased to be representative of the university community (n = 13,500), willingness to post-mortem organ donation was 90.7% and to PDS 70.7%. In this cohort, PDS willingness had the strongest association with mature age (> 40 years old; P, 0.0008). Among young adults, willingness to PDS was the lowest among volunteers from technical and business schools and the highest among those from the social sciences (P, 0.009). Respondents from the social sciences were also the most consistent between attitude and behavior with respect to organ donation. A free comment option revealed respondents were interested in the unusual taboo topic. CONCLUSIONS: A small, but sufficiently large proportion expressed willingness toward PDS. In our university cohort, which was biased in higher education and altruism, mature age and social interest were associated with PDS willingness.

The objective of this research was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of post-mortem ultrasound in antral follicle count (AFC) determination and compare it with visual AFC in grazing crossbred Holstein cows, at high altitude in Ecuador. Pre-mortem blood from 80 cows was collected, and AFC and ovarian characteristics were analysed post-mortem by ultrasound and visual techniques. AFC counts were stratified as high, medium or low by terciles. Mean AMH concentration in pre-mortem blood was 280.1 ± 15.53 pg/mL. The AFC obtained by visual inspection (26.9 ± 9.49 follicles) was 23.8% higher than by ultrasound (20.5 ± 7.53 follicles) in all ovaries. Body condition score, age and weight of the cattle did not interact with the count technique. In the low AFC group, visual inspection and ultrasound provided similar AFC results. However, in the Medium- and High-AFC groups, AFC by ultrasound was 14.9% lower than AFC by visual inspection. We confirm that ultrasound can be used with great accuracy for AFC >3 mm (close to the resolution limit) in grazing crossbred Holstein cows at high altitude.

This research aims to describe the process of ecological succession by associating the decomposition stages of pig carcasses with flies from the Calliphoridae family (Diptera). For this, 6 pig carcasses were exposed in Maranhão's Cerrado, utilizing metal cages with sawdust trays to catch immature specimens and "suspended traps" to capture adults. Adults of the Hemilucilia benoisti Séguy, and Hemilucilia townsendi Shannon species were only associated with the swelling stage. Chrysomya megacephala (Fabricius) was associated with 2 stages (black putrefaction and fermentation). The species Chloroprocta idioidea (Robineau-Desvoidy), Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann), Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius), and Lucilia eximia (Wiedemann) were associated with 4 of the 5 stages of decomposition, the latter being the only 1 associated with the initial stage. The larvae abandoned the carcasses to pupate from the second stage of decomposition, with L. eximia being the only 1 leaving the carcasses in the swelling stage, and C. albiceps the only 1 associated with both the fermentation and dry stages. Our findings indicate that calliphorid species can help forensic investigators estimine the post-mortem interval of cadavers in situations similar to those detailed in this study. Since there was a link between adult and immature species and certain stages, they can be used as indicators in future forensic investigations.

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of age and the interval between disease diagnosis and death on the organotropism of SARS-CoV-2. METHOD: Patients underwent post-mortem biopsies from lungs, Waldeyer ring, heart, liver, kidneys and bone marrow between 2020â2021. SARS-CoV-2 organotropism was mapped by using molecular RT-PCR analyses for SARS-CoV2 targeting the Envelope gene (E), the RNA Polymerase Gene (RdRp), and the Nucleocapsid gene (N). Statistical and linear regression analysis was performed to study the impact of age and illness duration in SARS-CoV-2 organotropism. RESULTS: We performed 158 postmortem biopsies in 21 patients, with a mean age of 76 years old. The mean interval between the diagnosis of the infection to the death was 23 days. The RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 was detected in 100% of lung biopsies, 76%â82% of Waldeyer's ring biopsies, 55% of heart biopsies, 40% of kidney biopsies, 33% of liver and 25% of bone marrow biopsies. Patients who died before the day 9, presented extensive visceral dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Most of the patients older than 80 years (90%) presented visceral dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, while among younger patients, only 3/11 patients presented visceral dissemination of the virus. The relationship between "age" and "illness duration" and multitropism of the virus was statistically significant (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Disease interval and age were factors that were significantly associated with RT-PCR positive results in multiple organs. Critical COVID-19 patients have multiorganic viral dissemination in early stages. In the critical older patients, multiorganic viral dissemination is the rule.
RESUMO
This scoping review intends to identify the most used analytical methods and biological samples in the post-mortem forensic toxicological analysis of cocaine and its metabolites. A scoping review was performed based on the question "What are the analytical methods and types of biological samples most frequently used to identify and quantify cocaine in post-mortem forensic toxicology?" The studies were selected from five databases and, after exclusions, the data were tabulated, analyzed, and reported. Twenty-one articles published between 2012 and 2022 were filtered from five different databases to be studied. The collected data indicate that the most used biological samples were blood and hair. The most used sample preparation technique was solid phase extraction, while the most mentioned chromatography method was liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. This review presents and discusses the state of the art regarding methods for the detection sensitivity spectrum, why limits of quantification are so important for these methods, and what are the most suitable biological samples to be utilized in each case. Cocaine and metabolites are important in forensic toxicologic post-mortem analysis. However, there is little concern in the development of miniaturized and automated sample preparation in this field. Besides, there is not enough understanding of post-mortem redistribution, tolerance, drug-drug interactions, and pre-existing medical conditions.

RESUMEN Objetivo. Este estudio se realizó retrospectivamente para evaluar el estado de equinococosis quística de los animales de granja, analizando las muestras enviadas al Instituto de Control Veterinario de Samsun de la República de Türkiye, Ministerio de Agricultura y Silvicultura, entre el Enero de 2016 y el Diciembre de 2022. Materiales y Métodos. Un total de 818 ovejas, 160 cabras y 990 materiales de necropsia de ganado bovino se examinaron macroscópicamente e histopatológicamente de acuerdo con las directrices de la Organización Mundial de Sanidad Animal (WOAH). Los quistes se detectaron en 61 materiales de todos los materiales examinados. Resultados. Se encontró que la tasa de positividad de equinococosis quística total en animales de granja era del 3,1% en el norte de Türkiye. Se detectaron quistes en al menos uno de los hígados y pulmones. Se detectó en hígado en 24 casos (39.3%), pulmón en 23 casos (37.7%) y tanto pulmón como hígado en 11 casos (18%). Además, se encontraron quistes tanto en pulmón como en bazo (1 caso), riñón e hígado (1 caso) y corazón e hígado (1 caso). La tasa de positividad fue mayor en ovejas que en otros rumiantes, y la diferencia con otras especies de rumiantes fue estadísticamente significativa. (p<0.001). Se encontró que la diferencia entre las tasas de prevalencia por años era estadísticamente significativa (p=0.001). Conclusiones. Türkiye se define como una región altamente endémica para Echinococcus granulosus y Echinococcus multilocularis. La vigilancia debe realizarse regularmente para implementar programas de control. La información presentada en este estudio contribuirá a obtener una idea sobre el estado de la equinococosis quística en el ganado en el norte de Türkiye y al desarrollo de estrategias de prevención y control.
ABSTRACT Objective. This study was conducted retrospectively to assess the cystic echinococcosis status of farm animals from the samples sent to Samsun Veterinary Control Institute of the Republic of Türkiye, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, between January 2016 and December 2022. Materials and Methods. A total of 818 sheep, 160 goats, and 990 cattle necropsy materials were examined macroscopically and histopathologically according to World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) guidelines. Cysts were detected in 61 of examined materials. Results. The rate of total cystic echinococcosis positivity in farm animals was found to be 3.1% in northern Türkiye. Cysts were detected in at least one of the liver and lungs. It was detected in the liver in 24 cases (39.3%), the lung in 23 cases (37.7%), and both the lung and liver in 11 cases (18%). In addition, cysts were found in both of lung and spleen (1 case), kidney and liver (1 case), and heart and liver (1 case). The positivity rate was higher in sheep than in other ruminants, and the difference with other ruminant species was statistically significant. (p<0.001). The difference between prevalence rates by years was found to be statistically significant (p=0.001). Conclusion. Türkiye is defined as a highly endemic region for Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis. Surveillance should be done regularly to implement control programs. The information presented in this study will contribute to gaining an idea about the status of cystic echinococcosis in livestock in northern Türkiye and to the development of prevention and control strategies.

Fatal poisonings with diazinon may occur both accidentally or intentionally in suicide cases. Forensic entomotoxicology can aid in understanding these deaths by detecting and analyzing the interference of toxic substances in the biology of necrophagous insects. Hence, this study sought to evaluate diazinon's effect on the composition and succession of calliphorid species in the tropical savannas of the Amazon. Nine rabbit carcasses were divided into three groups: one control and two diazinon treatments (100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg); each group had three replicates. Three fragments of the Amazon tropical savanna were selected for the experiments. Daily collections of adult and immature calliphorids were performed. Five decomposition stages were observed: fresh, bloated, active decay co-occurring, advanced decay, and dry. Eight species of Calliphoridae were identified among the collected adults: Chloroprocta idioidea (0.1%), Chrysomya albiceps (58.3%), Chrysomya megacephala (14.2%), Chrysomya putoria (2.6%), Cochliomyia hominivorax (1.3%), Cochliomyia macellaria (0.5%), Lucilia eximia (19.8%), and Paralucilia paraensis (3.3%). The adult specimens in the control group with the highest abundance were observed only from the advanced decay stage onward. In the dry stage, abundance was higher in control than in treated carcasses. From the sampled 941 Calliphorid immatures, three species were identified: C. albiceps (76,3%), C. putoria (1%), and L. eximia (22,7). The number of immatures was higher in control than in treated carcasses. Therefore, diazinon interferes with the putrefaction timeframe in carcasses, slowing the decomposition stages and affecting their colonization by immature forms of Calliphoridae.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to present the experience of the Institute of Forensic Sciences of Puerto Rico in facing the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), also known as COVID-19. It has been found that some COVID-19 positive cases may continue to show post-mortem positive results for up to 49 days. METHODS: The in vitro technique of ID NOW COVID-19 was used in the analysis to evaluate the presence of SARS-Cov-2 in postmortem forensic cases. This isothermal method allows to amplify and identify the presence of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase viral segment. Information on demographics, comorbidities, and the manner and cause of death was collected. RESULTS: A total of 612 subjects were sampled, of which 41 (6.7%) tested positive for COVID-19;14 (34.1%) of those subjects remained positive for more than 7 days Postmortem. Of the 41 positive cases, only 3 (7.3%) had been diagnosed with COVID-19 before their demise. The most common comorbidities were hypertension (36%), obesity (29%), and mental health conditions (50%). CONCLUSION: Results from postmortem COVID-19 testing revealed that some cadavers remain COVID-19 positive for a longer period than expected. Despite this, based on the information collected from the cases that were tested more than once, there is no direct correlation between the cause of death and persistent COVID-19 positivity. We recommend that additional investigations be carried out, in which investigations viral load and the maximum time of the infectious phase are specifically evaluated.

En este escrito se hace breve mención a la Real Expedición Botánica de la Nueva Granada como escuela de botánica de Eloy Valenzuela, a su mentor, el protomédico gaditano José Celestino Mutis, al protagonismo de Valenzuela en los aspectos sociales de los pobladores de la Villa de Bucaramanga en el siglo XVIII. También se muestran las enfermedades más frecuentes de la época y los remedios con que eran socorridos los pacientes.
This paper does a brief mention of the Royal Botanical Expedition of New Granada as Eloy Valenzuela's school of botany. Shows José Celestino Mutis, the Spanish protomedical mentor of Valenzuela, and describes the Valenzuela's leading role in the social aspects of the inhabitants of the Villa de Bucaramanga in the 18th century. The most frequent diseases of the time and the remedies with which patients were helped are shown.

Flies of the family Calliphoridae, commonly called blow flies, are important in the decomposition process. Knowledge on their succession pattern on corpses, species identification and the duration of their life cycle stages can be useful in forensic investigations especially when estimating the post-mortem interval. We performed linear-based morphometrics on the cephalopharyngeal skeleton of four blow fly species found in Jamaica to distinguish species and determine larval development stage. We collected eggs from pigs' heads used as bait in the field and conducted rearing exercises in the laboratory. We used the internal skeletonized structure, the cephalopharyngeal skeleton, to develop a practical and efficient method for species identification. For the first instar, we found species can be differentiated using all the measurements analysed in the study. We found that the mouth hook length may be useful in distinguishing larvae in the second instar. For the larvae in the third instar, the whole length of the skeleton, from mouth hook to length of the dorsal cornue, may be useful for separating species. We provide information on the cephalopharyngeal skeleton of Lucilia lucigerens (James), a blow fly species endemic to Jamaica, for the first time. Our work provides relevant information that could be utilized for species identification and life stage determination if fly evidence is to be incorporated in forensic investigations in Jamaica.

Green turtles, Chelonia mydas, have been included in biomonitoring efforts given its status as an endangered species. Many studies, however, rely on samples from stranded animals, raising the question of how death affects important biochemical and molecular biomarkers. The goal of this study was to investigate post mortem fluctuations in the antioxidant response and metabolism of carbohydrates in the liver of C. mydas. Liver samples were obtained from six green turtles which were submitted to rehabilitation and euthanized due to the impossibility of recovery. Samples were collected immediately after death (t = 0) and at various time intervals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h post mortem), frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -80 °C. The activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) were analyzed, as were the levels of lipid peroxidation, glycogen concentration, RNA integrity (RNA IQ) and transcript levels of carbonic anhydrase and pyruvate carboxylase genes. Comparison between post mortem intervals showed a temporal stability for all the biomarkers evaluated, suggesting that changes in biochemical and molecular parameters following green turtle death are not immediate, and metabolism may remain somewhat unaltered up to 24 h after death. Such stability may be associated with the overall lower metabolism of turtles, especially under an oxygen deprivation scenario such as organismal death. Overall, this study supports the use of biomarkers in sea turtles sampled within a period of 24 h post mortem for biomonitoring purposes, though it is recommended that post mortem fluctuations of particular biomarkers be evaluated prior to their application, given that proteins may show varying degrees of susceptibility to proteolysis.

Background: Despite the fact that Helicobacter spp. has been detected in equine gastric mucosa, no evidence exists about this infection in Colombian horses affected by equine ulcerative gastric syndrome (EGUS), nor in dental tartar. Objective: To detect Helicobacter spp. DNA in equine gastric mucosa and dental tartar and determine the relationship between the presence of Helicobacter spp. and gastric lesions. Methods: Samples of glandular gastric mucosa and dental tartar were collected from 30 equine slaughterhouses. Macroscopic lesions of the stomachs were classified and the total DNA in all samples was extracted using a commercial extraction kit. A final-point PCR was performed using primers for amplification of a segment of 251 bp of the gene encoding the 16s rRNA region; the amplified fragments were subjected to a second PCR to determine the presence of H. pylori, the VacA gene was typified. The resulting amplicons were sequenced. Results: It was possible to amplify 16s rRNA in several samples but there was no amplification of VacA. Fragments of the sequences were compatible with H. heilmannii. The 23.3 and 10% of gastric and tartar samples were positive for 16s rRNA of Helicobacter spp., respectively. Conclusion: Although genetic material of Helicobacter spp. was found in some animals, there was no relationship with gastric lesions. It is possible that helicobacteriosis has no bearing in EGUS etiology.
Antecedentes: A pesar de que se ha detectado Helicobacter spp. en mucosa gástrica equina, no existe evidencia de esta infección en caballos criollos colombianos afectados por síndrome ulcerativo gástrico (SUGE), ni tampoco reportes en sarro dental. Objetivo: Detectar ADN de Helicobacter spp. en sarro dental y mucosa gástrica de equinos, y determinar la relación entre la presencia de la bacteria y lesiones gástricas. Métodos: Las muestras de mucosa glandular gástrica y sarro dental fueron colectadas de 30 equinos que se encontraban en planta de beneficio. Las lesiones macroscópicas fueron clasificadas y el ADN total de las muestras fue extraído utilizando un kit comercial. Se desarrolló PCR convencional usando cebadores específicos para la amplificación de un segmento de 251 pb de un gen que codifica la región 16S del ARNr; los fragmentos amplificados fueron sometidos a una segunda PCR para determinar la presencia de H. pylori mediante la amplificación del gen VacA. Los amplificados resultantes fueron secuenciados. Resultados: Fue posible amplificar 16s ARNr en varias muestras, pero no hubo amplificación de VacA. Los fragmentos de las secuencias fueron compatibles con H. heilmannii. El 23,3 y 10% de las muestras gástricas y sarro fueron positivas para 16s ARNr de Helicobacter spp., respectivamente. Conclusión: Aunque el material genético de Helicobacter spp. se encontró en algunos animales, no hubo relación con las lesiones gástricas. Es posible que la helicobacteriosis no tenga incidencia en la etiología del EGUS.

Objetivo: Detectar ADN de Helicobacter spp. na mucosa gástrica e do sarro dental de equinos, e determinar a relação entre a presença de Helicobacter spp. e lesões gástricas. Métodos: Amostras de mucosa gástrica glandular e sarro dental foram coletadas de 30 equinos de abatedouro, as lesões macroscópicas dos estômagos foram classificadas. Se realizou extração de ADN total em todas as amostras através de kit comercial. Realizou-se PCR ponto final, amplificando o segmento de 251 pb do gene que codifica para a região 16s ARNr; os fragmentos amplificados foram sometidos novamente a PCR para determinar a presença de H. pylori, ao tipificar o gene VacA, e seguidamente foram sequenciados. Resultados: O houve amplificação do 16s ARNr em várias amostras, mas não amplificação de VacA. Fragmentos das sequencias foram compatíveis com H. heilmannii. O 23,3 e 10% das amostras gástricas e do sarro foram positivas para 16s ARNr de Helicobacter, respectivamente. Conclusão: Embora material genético de Helicobacter spp. encontrou-se em algumos animais não houve relação com lesões gástricas. Possivelmente a helicobacterioses não tem papel relevante na etiologia da SUGE.

Introducción: El "diente rosado" es un fenómeno post mortem. Se caracteriza por una tonalidad rosa, rojiza y hasta púrpura, que puede observarse en los dientes. Su primera referencia se remite a 1829, cuando Thomas Bell lo describió, y genera polémica desde hace casi dos siglos. La temática plantea varias interrogantes: ¿sería más lógico nombrarlo "red teeth" o "purple teeth"?, ¿qué provoca esa tonalidad más intensa?, ¿la coloración rosada indica determinada causa de muerte?, ¿queda para siempre o puede desaparecer por diversos factores? Objetivo: Describir los indicadores de que el "diente rosado" o "pink teeth" pueda aún ser considerado un elemento importante para la investigación forense actual. Comentarios principales: Luego de la experiencia acumulada con los casos trabajados durante los últimos 20 años y la revisión bibliográfica realizada, se evidencia que el fenómeno aparece sobre todo en las piezas dentales anteriores y premolares monorradiculares. Además, puede verse tanto ante mortem como post mortem. Por causas diferentes el post mortem necesita de varios días para instaurarse y es un evento tafonómico, evidenciable tanto en muertes violentas como naturales, aunque la variación en su tonalidad depende de diversos factores. Consideraciones globales: Teniendo en cuenta la experiencia obtenida por los autores, y lo referido en la bibliografía sobre el tema, se evidencia que este signo, fenómeno o hallazgo (al aclararse las interrogantes planteadas) aún puede ser muy significativo y orientador en el contexto forense actual(AU)
Introduction: "Pink teeth" are a post-mortem phenomenon characterized by a rose, reddish and even purple shade of color which may be observed in teeth. Their first reference dates back to 1829, when Thomas Bell described them. They have been a topic of debate for almost two centuries. The subject poses several questions: Would it be more logical to name them "red teeth" or "purple teeth"? What causes the increase in color intensity? Does the pink shade signal a specific cause of death? Does it remain forever or may it disappear for a variety of reasons? Objective: Describe the indicators that "pink teeth" may still be considered an important element in current forensic research. Main remarks: Based on the experience gathered from the cases analyzed in the last 20 years and the bibliographic review conducted, it is evident that the phenomenon appears mainly in anterior teeth and single-rooted premolars. On the other hand, pink teeth may be observed ante mortem as well as post mortem. For a number of reasons, post mortem pink teeth take several days to form, and they are a taphonomic phenomenon, present in violent as well as natural deaths, though their change in tone depends on various factors. General considerations: Founded on the experience obtained by the authors and the bibliography about the topic, it is evident that this sign, phenomenon or finding (upon clarification of the questions posed) may still be very significant and enlightening in the current forensic context(AU)

Given the growing demands for standardization of procedures for collection, preservation, and identification of insect specimens, this study aimed to identify how forensic entomology is used in Brazil and the perceptions of professionals involved in this process. We conducted: (1) bibliometric survey of the scientific production of forensic specialists from 2001 to 2020; (2) questionnaire applied to forensic professionals to verify their perceptions about the use of entomological evidence in practice. An increase in publications on Forensic Entomology was noticed in the last 5 years, mainly in the South and Northeast regions. Of the 82 respondents to the questionnaire, 62.8% deal with cadavers at least once a week, but 89.0% of the professionals who examine cadavers weekly find less than 10.0% colonized by insect larvae. Using entomological evidence to estimate PMI was mentioned by only 36.6% of the professionals. Most respondents stated no procedures related to collecting, handling, or identifying necrophagous insects in their daily practice. Regarding the chain of custody, 64.6% said they were aware of the changes in the regulations involving the collection and maintenance of forensic evidence. We emphasize the importance of collaboration between scientists at universities and crime scene examiners. Although the use of entomological evidence in criminal investigations in Brazil is still scarce, a growing interest in this area can be detected among forensic experts.

O presente estudo apresenta as causas de rejeições parciais e totais nos matadouros do município sede da província de Benguela, localizada a oeste de Angola, no período de janeiro a abril de 2021. Foram abatidos e inspecionados 500 animais, sendo 349 bovinos, 108 suínos e 43 caprinos. Durante três meses, foi feito o acompanhamento da inspeção post mortem, realizado pelos técnicos do Instituto de Serviços de Veterinária (ISV), autoridade competente, durante a qual se utilizou o método de observação, de registros, consulta de arquivos publicados e captação de imagens por fotografia. Foram registradas 188 rejeições parciais e totais, sendo que 38% dos animais inspecionados apresentaram lesões nas vísceras vermelhas, principalmente nos pulmões e no fígado, 82,9% das lesões nos pulmões foram sugestivas da Peripneumonia Contagiosa Bovina (PPCB). Entre as doenças parasitárias, prevaleceram a hidatidose e a fasciolose nos bovinos e, a cisticercose nos suínos. A análise dos dados obtidos na pesquisa mostrou que a maior parte das rejeições de forma parcial nos bovinos e caprinos tiveram como causa lesões nas vísceras vermelhas, principalmente nos pulmões. Nos suínos as rejeições tiveram como causa, a observação do Cisticercus suis nos músculos na forma generalizada.(AU)
The present study demonstrates the causes of partial and total rejections in slaughterhouses in the capital of Benguela province, located on the west of Angola, from January to April of 2021, five hundred (500) animals were slaughtered and inspected, tree hundred and forty-nine (349) cattle, one hundred and eight (108) pigs and forty-three goats. For three months we monitored the post mortem inspection carried out by technicians from the Institute of Veterinary Services (ISV), the competent authority used the observations method, records, consultations of the published files from other countries and capture imagens by photography. Were recorded a hundred and eighty-eight (188) partial and five (5) total rejections. About 38% of the inspected animals had lesions in the red viscera (mainly in the lungs and liver) and 82.9% of the lung lesions were suggestive of Bovine Contagious Peripneumonia (PPCB). Among the parasitic diseases, hydatid disease and fasciolosis prevailed in cattle and the cysticercosis in pigs. The analysis of the data obtained in the research showed that most of the partial rejections in cattle and goats were caused by lesions in the red viscera, mainly in the lungs. In pigs, rejections were caused by the observation of Cisticercus suis in the muscles in a generalized form.(AU)

Bipolar disorder shares symptoms and pathological pathways with other neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Since TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) is a neuropathological marker of frontotemporal dementia and it is involved in synaptic transmission, we explored the role of TDP-43 as a molecular feature of bipolar disorder (BD). Homogenates were acquired from frozen hippocampus of postmortem brains of bipolar disorder subjects. TDP-43 levels were quantified using an ELISA-sandwich method and compared between the postmortem brains of bipolar disorder subjects and age-matched control group. We found higher levels of TDP-43 protein in the hippocampus of BD (n = 15) subjects, when compared to controls (n = 15). We did not find associations of TDP-43 with age at death, postmortem interval, or age of disease onset. Our results suggest that protein TDP-43 may be potentially implicated in behavioral abnormalities seen in BD. Further investigation is needed to validate these findings and to examine the role of this protein during the disease course and mood states.

Caves are habitats characterized by low light or total darkness, whose fauna is largely composed of animals that adapt to dark environments, such as bats and many arthropods. Here, we present the first record of bat carcass colonization by Diptera larvae in a cave in the Neotropics. Twenty-one adult specimens of Microcerella halli (Sarcophagidae), seven males and 14 females, emerged from larvae collected in a carcass of Pteronotus gymnonotus (Mormoopidae) found in a twilight zone, about 15 m from the cave entrance. The mean time between carcass collection and adult emergence was 17.99 ± 0.44 days. As colonization by M. halli only occurs after death, we estimated the mean duration of the pupal stage by recording daily pupation and emergence data and attempted a preliminary estimate of the post-mortem interval, which indicated that larviposition occurred at least 24 h before carcass collection. Furthermore, we discussed the fact that M. halli females can find and colonize carcasses in low light environments, reinforcing the forensic potential of the species.(AU)
