RESUMO

To more effectively respond to sexual assault in the United States, some jurisdictions have created sexual assault response teams (SARTs). SARTs involve members of multiple agencies tasked with responding to sexual assault within a jurisdiction, such as law enforcement, advocates, prosecutors, and sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs). Despite hundreds of jurisdictions utilizing SARTs, and the Department of Justice establishing guidelines, SARTs vary across jurisdictions in their form and function. To clarify this, the current research outlines two studies to better understand the logistics and functioning of one SART. In Study 1, for over nearly 2 years, SART meetings were observed and notes were taken on representation of agencies, time spent on cases, and possible challenges. Overall, the SART met consistently, with representation of major stakeholders at each meeting. Stakeholder agencies remained consistent and most time spent in the meetings was on case review. In Study 2, 10 members of SART were interviewed to assess perceptions of SART. These interviews were independently qualitatively coded for both factual and thematic codes. Areas of focus included perceived logistics of the SART and expertise of members that make up an effective SART. Overall, on average, members had been part of the SART for 3.5 years, felt required to attend the meetings as part of their role, and shared that all members (i.e., law enforcement, district attorney, victim advocates, and SANEs) had expertise on differing subjects that effectively made the SART work well. Importantly, qualitative perceptions from members of the SART (Study 2) lined up with the independent observation of SART meetings (Study 1). Ultimately, the results from this body of research could delineate specific actions that a jurisdiction implementing a SART could utilize.

Tobacco continuous cropping is prevalent in intensive tobacco agriculture but often leads to microbial community imbalance, soil nutrient deficiency, and decreased crop productivity. While the tobacco-rape rotation has demonstrated significant benefits in increasing tobacco yield. Microorganisms play a crucial role in soil nutrient cycling and crop productivity. However, the internal mechanism of tobacco-rape rotation affecting tobacco yield through microbe-soil interaction is still unclear. In this study, two treatments, tobacco continuous cropping (TC) and tobacco-rape rotation (TR) were used to investigate how planting systems affect soil microbial diversity and community structure, and whether these changes subsequently affect crop yields. The results showed that compared with TC, TR significantly increased the Shannon index, Chao1 index, ACE index of bacteria and fungi, indicating increased microbial α-diversity. On the one hand, TR may directly affect the bacterial and fungal community structure due to the specificity of root morphology and root exudates in rape. Compared with TC, TR significantly increased the proportion of beneficial bacterial and fungal taxa while significantly reduced soil-borne pathogens. Additionally, TR enhanced the scale and complexity of microbial co-occurrence networks, promoting potential synergies between bacterial OTUs. On the other hand, TR indirectly changed microbial community composition by improving soil chemical properties and changing microbial life history strategies. Compared with TC, TR significantly increased the relative abundance of copiotrophs while reduced oligotrophs. Notably, TR significantly increased tobacco yield by 39.6% compared with TC. The relationships among yield, microbial community and soil chemical properties indicated that planting systems had the greatest total effect on tobacco yield, and the microbial community, particularly bacteria, had the greatest direct effect on tobacco yield. Our findings highlighted the potential of tobacco-rape rotation to increase yield by both directly and indirectly optimizing microbial community structure.

Improving the nutrient content of red soils in southern China is a priority for efficient rice production there. To assess the effectiveness of oilseed rape as green manure for the improvement of soil phosphorus nutrient supply and rice yield in red soil areas, a long-term field plot experiment was conducted comparing two species of rape, Brassica napus (BN) and Brassica juncea (BJ). The effects of returning oilseed rape on soil phosphorus availability, phosphorus absorption, and yield of subsequent rice under rice-green manure rotation mode were analyzed, using data from the seasons of 2020 to 2021. The study found that compared with winter fallow treatment (WT) and no-tillage treatment (NT), the soil available phosphorus content of BN was increased, and that of BJ was significantly increased. The content of water-soluble inorganic phosphorus of BJ increased, and that of BN increased substantially. Compared with the WT, the soil organic matter content and soil total phosphorus content of BN significantly increased, as did the soil available potassium content of BJ, and the soil total phosphorus content of BJ was significantly increased compared with NT. The soil particulate phosphorus content of BJ and BN was significantly increased by 14.00% and 16.00%, respectively. Compared with the WT, the phosphorus activation coefficient of BJ was significantly increased by 11.41%. The rice plant tiller number under the green manure returning treatment was significantly increased by 43.16% compared with the winter fallow treatment. The green manure returning measures increased rice grain yield by promoting rice tiller numbers; BN increased rice grain yield by 9.91% and BJ by 11.68%. Based on these results, returning oilseed rape green manure could augment the phosphorus nutrients of red soil and promote phosphorus availability. Rice-oilseed rape green manure rotation could increase rice grain yield.

Rape myths-false but widely held beliefs that serve to deny and justify sexual aggression-present a major barrier to reporting and prevention of sexual violence in Vietnam and globally. Based on a parent study aimed at reducing sexual violence at two universities in Hanoi, we developed and assessed a contextualized measure of rape myths among young people in Vietnam. Items from previously validated rape myth acceptance (RMA) scales and data from qualitative research informed the development of 50 items, which were administered to Vietnamese 18-24-year-olds (n = 2,756 total, n = 1,798 cisgender women) via an anonymous link in February 2021. We used factor analysis to explore and test factor structure and multi-group factor analysis to assess measurement equivalence across gender. We calculated item-level discrimination and difficulty parameters and visualized information curves using item response theory analysis, informing the development of a short form. Four hypothesized subconstructs identified in the qualitative data emerged as factors: (1) "He didn't mean to"; (2) "She asked for it"; (3) "It wasn't really rape"; and (4) "Rape is a deviant event." A fifth factor, "She didn't protect herself," included four items from formative data. Confirming formative findings and prior literature, cisgender women had lower RMA than cisgender men, particularly on items related to victim-blaming. The Vietnamese Rape Myths Acceptance Scales were internally consistent and equivalent between cisgender men and women, capturing elements specific to the Vietnamese context and providing a tool for campus climate surveys and evaluations of sexual violence prevention programs.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has significantly increased the incidence of sexual violence against women. Victims who manage to access health care within 72 h of experiencing rape can receive critical preventive care to mitigate the consequences of such violence. Despite this, a disproportionately small number of victims are able to obtain medical care within this crucial time frame. This study aimed to identify both individual and contextual factors that influence the likelihood of accessing post-rape care within 72 h in the eastern DRC. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized patient records from Panzi Hospital along with contextual data provided by the South Kivu Provincial Ministry of Health. It encompassed rape victims residing in South Kivu province who sought post-rape care between 2014 and 2019. To identify individual and contextual factors influencing timely access to care (within 72 h), multilevel logistic regression analysis was employed. RESULTS: The study included a total of 4,048 women, with 30 % being under 18 years old and 40 % married. Around 13 % accessed care within 72 h of rape. Multivariate analysis revealed that timely access to care (within 72 h) was negatively influenced by factors such as the isolation of the victim's health zone of residence (aOR = 0.29 [0.14-0.63], p = 0.002), the distance between the home health zone and the hospital (aOR = 0.75 [0.54-0.99], p = 0.041), instances of rape occurring in 2015 or earlier (aOR = 0.44 [0.34-0.57], p < 0.001), and referrals to the hospital from other health facilities or organizations (aOR = 0.78 [0.61-1.00], p = 0.049). Conversely, being single was positively associated with access to care within this critical period (aOR = 1.29 [1.03-1.61], p = 0.024). Furthermore, statistical trends indicate that the presence of Panzi partner NGOs in the victim's health zone might facilitate access to care (aOR = 1.33 [0.99-1.80], p = 0.057), highlighting an area of interest, while being internally displaced at the time of rape was associated with a trend towards reduced access to care (aOR = 0.78 [0.59-1.02], p = 0.068), underscoring the need for further research and targeted interventions. CONCLUSION: To enhance access to post-rape care, our study highlights the need for strengthened collaboration with all partnering organizations and focused efforts on raising awareness, particularly among married women and their husbands. Enhancing security measures, constructing or upgrading roads to better connect major cities with currently inaccessible or isolated areas, bolstering the efforts of both local and international NGOs, and offering comprehensive reproductive health services to internally displaced women and those residing in the victims' health zones, are crucial steps toward ensuring access to post-rape care within the critical 72-hour window.

The relation between aphids and Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) in oilseed rape is rarely examined because they are often studied alone. We have observed a significant correlation between the number of aphids and the occurrence of SSR in our field studies. Electropenetrography (EPG) was used to evaluate the effects of Brevicoryne brassicae (Linnaeus) on two oilseed rape cultivars while acquiring, vectoring and inoculating of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum Lib. (de Bary) ascospores. The results demonstrated that aphid feeding followed by the application of an ascospore suspension significantly increased S. sclerotiorum incidence. Aphids were capable of adhering to ascospores and carrying them to healthy plants, thereby causing diseases. The results of the EPG analysis indicated that aphid feeding behaviour was significantly altered in all leaf tissue levels following infection with S. sclerotiorum. Aphids initiated their first puncture significantly sooner than the control group, began probing mesophyll cells earlier, significantly increased the frequency of both short probes and intracellular punctures and had a significantly shorter pathway duration. On infected aphid-susceptible cultivars, aphids secreted more saliva but had reduced ingestion compared with aphids feeding on non-infected oilseed rape. In addition, ascospores can affect aphid feeding behaviour by adhering to aphids. Aphids carrying ascospores punctured cells earlier, with a significant increase in the frequency and duration of short probes and cell punctures, shortened pathway durations, increased salivation and reduced ingestion compared with aphids not carrying ascospores. On aphid-susceptible cultivars, aphids carrying ascospores delayed puncture onset, but on resistant cultivars, puncture onset was shortened. There is a correlation between aphids and S. sclerotiorum. The impact of S. sclerotiorum on aphid feeding behaviour is directional, favouring the spread of the fungus. This promotion does not appear to be altered by the aphid resistance of the cultivar.

Sexual victimization is a serious public health crisis affecting college students, with high rates reported among both women and men. Sexual consent education is crucial as it defines sexual assault and is linked to reduced risk of victimization. Rape myths and stereotyped beliefs shifting blame to survivors are established risk factors for sexual violence. Comprehensive sexual education can mitigate these attitudes, fostering a supportive environment for survivors. However, most high school students in the United States receive abstinence-based or abstinence-plus education, which uses unstandardized protocols and often lacks information about sexual consent. The following study explores the influence of high school sexual education on past sexual victimization and rape myth acceptance in college students. Six hundred sixty-four undergraduate students participated in an online survey through a university participant pool. Results show that those who received comprehensive sexual education were more likely to understand sexual consent and were less likely to endorse past sexual victimization. In contrast, students without comprehensive sexual education reported lower satisfaction with their sexual education and greater acceptance of rape myths. Despite limitations in the study's sample and reliance on self-reporting, this research highlights the importance of implementing comprehensive sexual education, including consent education, in high schools. Policymakers and educators must recognize the influence of comprehensive sexual education in promoting healthy relationships and combating sexual assault. As a significant public health concern, incorporating standardized sexual consent education into high school curricula can equip students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their sexual health and relationships. Future research should explore diverse populations and the mediating role of related factors that may further influence these relationships. These efforts will contribute to fostering a safer environment within educational institutions and combating sexual assault.

Cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) inhibitors reduce the degradation of cytokinins in plants and thereby may improve the efficiency of agriculture and plant tissue culture-based practices. Here, we report a synthesis and structure-activity relationship study of novel urea derivatives concerning their CKX inhibitory activity. The best compounds showed sub-nanomolar IC50 values with maize ZmCKX1, the lowest value yet documented. Other CKX isoforms of maize (Zea mays) and Arabidopsis were also inhibited very effectively. The binding mode of four compounds was characterized based on high-resolution crystal complex structures. Using the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, and human skin fibroblasts, key CKX inhibitors with low toxicity were identified. These compounds enhanced the shoot regeneration of Lobelia, Drosera, and Plectranthus, as well as the growth of Arabidopsis and Brassica napus. At the same time, a key compound (namely 82), activated a cytokinin primary response gene ARR5:GUS and cytokinin sensor TCSv2:GUS, without activating the Arabidopsis cytokinin receptors AHK3 and AHK4. This strongly implies that the effect of compound 82 is due to the upregulation of cytokinin signalling. Overall, this work presents highly effective and easily prepared CKX inhibitors with a low risk of environmental toxicity for further investigation of their potential in agriculture and biotechnology.

This study examines girl child abuse in an internally displaced people's camp in north-central Nigeria and the response of community health workers. The conflict in Benue State is caused by religious differences between the natives (Tiv people) and the invading Fulani herdsmen. During these conflicts, women and girls were displaced, and they were kept in internally displaced persons (IDPs) located in different parts of the state. Literature has been extensively written on internal displacement in Nigeria, but none has been able to elucidate the health needs of girls and the various abuses girls and women are suffering in IDP camps. In this study, literature was extended (1) to explore the environment of the girl child in IDP camps, (2) to identify reasons for the abuse of the girl child in IDP camps, (3) to investigate the impacts of the abuse on the girl child in IDP camps and (4) to investigate how healthcare workers could be used to alleviate the plight of girl children in IDP camps. This is a qualitative case study, with data obtained from relevant academic literature and personal observation. The data were analysed using content analysis. Findings reveal that the girl child is suffering from psychological, economic and health challenges due to the various forms of abuse they are going through. Following the devastation in Benue State, healthcare workers from the community relocated to neighbouring states. There is a need to recall those healthcare workers and provide them with the necessary materials to assist girls in IDP camps. Recommendations are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Characterisation of the structure and water status of leaf tissues is essential to the understanding of leaf hydraulic functioning under optimal and stressed conditions. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is unique in its capacity to access this information in a spatially resolved, non-invasive and non-destructive way. The purpose of this study was to develop an original approach based on transverse relaxation mapping by Magnetic Resonance Imaging for the detection of changes in water status and distribution at cell and tissue levels in Brassica napus leaves during blade development and dehydration. RESULTS: By combining transverse relaxation maps with a classification scheme, we were able to distinguish specific zones of areoles and veins. The tissue heterogeneity observed in young leaves still occurred in mature and senescent leaves, but with different distributions of T2 values in accordance with the basipetal progression of leaf blade development, revealing changes in tissue structure. When subjected to severe water stress, all blade zones showed similar behaviours. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the great potential of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in assessing information on the structure and water status of leaves. The feasibility of in planta leaf measurements was demonstrated, opening up many opportunities for the investigation of leaf structure and hydraulic functioning during development and/or in response to abiotic stresses.

Intimate partner or marital/spousal rape is a phenomenon with unique characteristics and dynamics. Furthermore, it is an under-explored, under-defined, under-reported, and widely tolerated phenomenon. Gender-based violence and intimate partner violence are the main topics of the present study. The study aimed at exploring the trends in reported intimate partner and marital/spousal rape, within the wider context of reported domestic violence during the years 2020 and 2021 in Greece. Statistical analysis has not indicated positive correlation between the rate of reported domestic violence per year and the rate of reported domestic rape per year, with the former following an upward trend and the latter maintaining an almost steady course. Similarly, the rate of reported victims of intimate partner rape per year remained almost stable within in the 2 years. Importantly however, in 2021, the rate of reported victims of marital rape per year increased remarkably compared to 2020. In 2021, the rates of reported domestic violence per month and reported domestic rape per month indicated remarkable increase over the period May to December 2021. Notwithstanding, the rates mentioned above remained almost stable over the year 2020, showing an upward trend during the summer months. In August 2020 and 2021 the abovementioned rates reached their peak. In both years, the vast majority of victims of domestic rape were females, mostly between 30 and 45 years of age. The present study indicated an increase in rates of reported domestic violence and reported domestic rape per month after the lockdowns, especially after the second long-lasting lockdown that ended in May 2021. This increase, however, might be only apparent. Further research is needed to study the epidemiology of intimate partner and marital rape over a much longer timespan to provide further insight into the dynamics surrounding a public health concern.

Research on sexual assault has shown that victim, perpetrator, and participant characteristics can influence evaluations of an assault. However, the studies have not examined a possible main effect or interactions from respectively introducing the victim or perpetrator first in an assault description, and previous studies have used participant samples with little diversity. We conducted two studies with factorial between-groups designs that varied presentation order in addition to victim and perpetrator stereotypicality and then assessed the impacts on participants' judgments of sexual assault scenarios. We used the online marketplace Prolific to collect large, diverse samples of participants, and in the second study, we collected roughly equal sample sizes of individuals who identified as Black females/males and White females/males. Our results indicate that multiple factors-including victim and perpetrator stereotypicality, presentation order, and participants' gender identities-significantly influenced judgments of the sexual assault, and there were numerous interactions. The results provide strongest support for a spreading activation model in which each factor can influence a participant's judgment of the other factors and the overall scenario. As such, the findings may bear on the legal handling of sexual assault cases as well as suggesting how different presentation formats and emphases in media coverage may sway the court of public opinion.

The composition of honey is mostly determined by the species-specific characteristics of flowering plants, which is reflected in the significant deviations in composition of honey varieties. The high-quality acacia honey is assessed based on both physical-chemical parameters and melissopalynology. The appearance of rape pollen in acacia honey makes the acacia honey be sorted into the multifloral honey category. Over carrying out melissopalynology, the149 samples of various honeys (acacia, rape and multifloral) have also been analysed by using physical-chemical and elemental analysis. Multivariate data analysis revealed that multifloral honey is much closer to acacia honey than to rape honey, as it can be observed from the examined unique parameters. By the PCA (Principal Component Analysis) analysis based on united set of physico-chemical and melissopalynology results the acacia and rape honey samples are entirely separated for each other, while multifloral honey samples are very close to acacia honey group and partially overlap with it. On ignoring the pollen analysis and based on the rest of the results, the multifloral honey category is almost indistinguishable from the declared and verified acacia honey category.

Recombination is a key mechanism in breeding for promoting genetic variability. Multiparental populations constitute an excellent platform for precise genotype phasing, identification of genome-wide crossovers, estimation of recombination frequencies and construction of recombination maps. Here, we introduce haploMAGIC, a pipeline to detect crossovers in multiparental populations with single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data by exploiting the pedigree relationships for accurate genotype phasing and inference of grandparental haplotypes. haploMAGIC applies filtering to prevent false positive crossovers due to genotyping errors, a common problem in high-throughput SNP analysis of complex plant genomes. Hence it discards haploblocks not reaching a specified minimum number of informative alleles. A performance analysis using populations simulated with AlphaSimR revealed that haploMAGIC improves upon existing methods of crossover detection in terms of recall and precision, most notably when genotyping error rates are high. Furthermore, we constructed recombination maps using haploMAGIC with high-resolution genotype data from two large multi-parental populations of winter rapeseed (Brassica napus). The results demonstrate the applicability of the pipeline in real-world scenarios and showed good correlations in recombination frequency compared with alternative software. Therefore, we propose haploMAGIC as an accurate tool at crossover detection with multiparental populations that shows robustness against genotyping errors.

Plant can recruit beneficial microbes to enhance their ability to resist disease. Selenium is well established as a beneficial element in plant growth, but its role in mediating microbial disease resistance remained poorly understood. Here, we investigated the correlation between selenium, oilseed rape rhizosphere microbes and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Soil application of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg selenium significantly increased the resistance of oilseed rape to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum compared with no selenium application, and the disease inhibition rate was higher than 20%. The disease resistance of oilseed rape was related to rhizosphere microorganisms, and beneficial bacteria isolated from the rhizosphere inhibited Sclerotinia stem rot. Burkholderia cepacia, and synthetic community enhanced plant disease resistance through transcriptional regulation and activated plant-induced systemic resistance to protect plants. Besides, inoculation of isolated bacteria optimized the bacterial community structure of leaves and enriched beneficial microorganisms such as Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas. Bacillus isolated from the leaves were sprayed on the detached leaves, and it also performed a significant inhibition effect on Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Overall, our results suggested that selenium drive plant rhizosphere microorganisms to increase resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in oilseed rape.

The choice of effective crop protection technologies is a key factors in the economical production of oilseed rape. Insecticides belonging to the group of active substances butenolides and diamides are active substances available as seed treatments in oilseed rape and promising control tools in the crop protection technologies. Our laboratory experiment demonstrated that the experimental insecticides flupyradifurone and cyantraniliprole are both effective against Eurydema ventralis (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) when used as a seed and in-crop treatments, but there is a fundamental difference in their insect mortality inducing effects. Flupyradifurone was found to have a total mortality 96 h after application based on basipetal translocation. In the case of cyantraniliprole, the insecticidal effect of the same treatment was 27% less. The experiment showed that the acropetal translocation of the tested active substances after seed treatment did not induce efficacy comparable to that of the basipetal translocation. The study of the biophoton emission of the plants demonstrated a verifiable correlation between the different application methods of the insecticides and the photon emission intensity per unit plant surface area. In conclusion, the systematic insecticides tested, in addition to having the expected insecticidal effect, interfere with plant life processes by enhancing photosynthetic activity.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution has been a significant concern in heavy metal pollution, prompting plants to adopt various strategies to mitigate its damage. While the response of plants to Cd stress and the impact of exogenous melatonin has received considerable attention, there has been limited focus on the responses of closely related species to these factors. Consequently, our investigation aimed to explore the response of three different species of rape to Cd stress and examine the influence of exogenous melatonin in this scenario. The research findings revealed distinctive responses among the investigated rape species. B. campestris showed the resistance to Cd and exhibited lower Cd absorption and sustained its physiological activity under Cd stress. In contrast, B. juncea accumulated much Cd and increased the amount of anthocyanin to mitigate the Cd-damage. Furthermore, B. napus showed the tolerance to Cd and tended to accumulate Cd in vacuoles under Cd stress, thereby decreasing the Cd damage and leading to higher activity of antioxidant enzymes and photosynthesis. Moreover, the application of exogenous melatonin significantly elevated the melatonin level in plants and mitigated Cd toxicity by promoting the activity of antioxidant enzymes, reducing Cd absorption, enhancing the chelating capacity with Cd, decreasing Cd accumulation in organelles, and reducing its fluidity. Specifically, exogenous melatonin increased the FHAc content in B. campestris, elevated the phytochelatins (PCs) level in B. napus, and stimulated photosynthesis in B. juncea. In summary, the findings underscore the species-specific responses of the three species of rape to both Cd stress and exogenous melatonin, highlighting the potential for tailored mitigation strategies based on the unique characteristics of each species.

Male rape is a relatively under-discussed topic in scientific literature, despite its significant relevance and prevalence worldwide, including in Brazil. To inform public health and safety policies, this study aimed to analyze cases of male rape using data from SINAN, the Information System for Notifiable Diseases, a division of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, for the years 2010-2022. Our findings reveal a 469 % increase in male rape cases in the country over the study period, with a predominance of cases in the state of São Paulo. Also, a higher prevalence of cases was observed among individuals aged 5-9 years. Furthermore, we identified a correlation between the occurrence of rape and certain factors, including individuals with less than 4 years of formal education if they were over the age of 50, and those who had a history of being sexually abused between the ages of 5 and 14. Additionally, this study reinforces the prevalence of rape cases occurring within domestic environments and perpetrated by individuals closely related to the victims. This study contributes to filling the gap in research on male rape in Brazil, laying the foundation for the development of strategies to prevent and combat rape in the country.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is widespread in war-torn North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Timely access to care is crucial for the healing and wellbeing of survivors of sexual violence, but is problematic due to a variety of barriers. Through a better understanding of care-seeking behaviours and factors influencing timely access to care, programmes can be adapted to overcome some of the barriers faced by survivors of sexual violence. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe demographics, care-seeking patterns and factors influencing timely care-seeking by survivors of sexual violence. METHODS: Retrospective file-based data analysis of sexual violence survivors accessing care within two Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) programmes supporting the Ministry of Health, in North Kivu, DRC, 2014-2018. RESULTS: Most survivors (66%) sought care at specialised sexual violence clinics and a majority of the survivors were self-referred (51%). Most survivors seeking care (70%) did so within 3 days. Male survivors accessing care were significantly more likely to seek care within 3 days compared to females. All age groups under 50 years old were more likely to seek care within 3 days compared to those aged 50 years and older. Being referred by the community, a family member, mobile clinic or authorities was significantly associated with less probability of seeking care within 3 days compared to being self-referred. CONCLUSION: Access to timely health care for survivors of sexual violence in North Kivu, DRC, is challenging and varies between different groups of survivors. Providers responding to survivors of sexual violence need to adapt models of care and awareness raising strategies to ensure that programmes are developed to enable timely access to care for all survivors. More research is needed to further understand the barriers and enablers to access timely care for different groups of survivors.


Main findings: Timely access to care for survivors of sexual violence is crucial yet challenging in many places, including in North Kivu, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This study shows that a majority of survivors access care through specialised clinics, that access is limited for male and child survivors, and highlights factors influencing timely access to care for survivors of sexual violence.Added knowledge: This study shows that age, sex, and different referral pathways impact timely care seeking among survivors of sexual violence accessing care.Global health impact for policy and action: A better understanding of care-seeking patterns and which factors influence timely care seeking is useful when designing and implementing programmes responding to survivors of sexual violence.

Although oilseed rape is frequently used as an alternative planting crop in the phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd)-contaminated agricultural land, methods for screening excellent oilseed rape varieties in this regard are inadequate. Herein, we developed a screening method that incorporates Cd accumulation, distribution, and removal, economic output, adaptability to Cd-contaminated agricultural land, and trace element variation. A Cd-adaptability index (Cd-AI) based on 10 agronomic traits was used to measure the adaptability of varieties to Cd-contaminated agricultural land. Moreover, to simplify the evaluation of adaptability, yield, biomass, and pod number with high weightings were selected to construct a discriminant function for Cd-contaminated agricultural land adaptability (correctly classified 94.20%). In a 2 year field trial, we evaluated 225 oilseed rape varieties, among which we identified two promising low-Cd-accumulating and two Cd-remediating varieties. For the low-Cd-accumulating varieties (HuYou17 and DeXingYou558), we obtained grain bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values of 0.07 and 0.08, BAFsoil-stalk values of <1, and economic outputs of RMB 25,054 and 32,292 yuan hm-2, respectively. Similarly, the Cd-remediating varieties (ZaoZa8 and YuYou61) were characterized by BAFsoil-stalk values of 4.65 and 3.61, BAFsoil-grain values of 0.16 and 0.16, Cd removals of 69.02 and 58.25 g hm-2, and economic outputs of RMB 31,189 and 24,962 yuan hm-2, respectively. Compared with the control variety, we detected lower uptakes of multiple trace elements (3-43%) in the low-Cd-accumulating varieties, whereas the Cd-remediating varieties were characterized by 15.40% and 8.30% increases in the accumulation of magnesium and zinc, respectively. Our findings augment the evaluation indices used for evaluating oilseed rape varieties and provide valuable insights from the perspectives of varietal screening and promotional application. The effective varieties identified have application potential for safe production and the remediation of agricultural land without interrupting annual agricultural production, and provide an economically sustainable approach for the utilization of Cd-contaminated agricultural land.
