Severe ground-level ozone (O3) pollution over major Chinese cities has become one of the most challenging problems, which have deleterious effects on human health and the sustainability of society. This study explored the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of ground-level O3 and its precursors based on conventional pollutant and meteorological monitoring data in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2021. Then, a high-performance convolutional neural network (CNN) model was established by expanding the moment and the concentration variations to general factors. Finally, the response mechanism of O3 to the variation with crucial influencing factors is explored by controlling variables and interpolating target variables. The results indicated that the annual average MDA8-90th concentrations in Zhejiang Province are higher in the northern and lower in the southern. When the wind direction (WD) ranges from east to southwest and the wind speed (WS) ranges between 2 and 3 m/sec, higher O3 concentration prone to occur. At different temperatures (T), the O3 concentration showed a trend of first increasing and subsequently decreasing with increasing NO2 concentration, peaks at the NO2 concentration around 0.02 mg/m3. The sensitivity of NO2 to O3 formation is not easily affected by temperature, barometric pressure and dew point temperature. Additionally, there is a minimum [Formula: see text] at each temperature when the NO2 concentration is 0.03 mg/m3, and this minimum [Formula: see text] decreases with increasing temperature. The study explores the response mechanism of O3 with the change of driving variables, which can provide a scientific foundation and methodological support for the targeted management of O3 pollution.

Emission characteristics of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) from dominant tree species in the subtropical pristine forests of China are extremely limited. Here we conducted in situ field measurements of BVOCs emissions from representative mature evergreen trees by using dynamic branch enclosures at four altitude gradients (600-1690 m a.s.l.) in the Nanling Mountains of southern China. Composition characteristics as well as seasonal and altitudinal variations were analyzed. Standardized emission rates and canopy-scale emission factors were then calculated. Results showed that BVOCs emission intensities in the wet season were generally higher than those in the dry season. Monoterpenes were the dominant BVOCs emitted from most broad-leaved trees, accounting for over 70% of the total. Schima superba, Yushania basihirsuta and Altingia chinensis had relatively high emission intensities and secondary pollutant formation potentials. The localized emission factors of isoprene were comparable to the defaults in the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), while emission factors of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were 2 to 58 times of those in the model. Our results can be used to update the current BVOCs emission inventory in MEGAN, thereby reducing the uncertainties of BVOCs emission estimations in forested regions of southern China.

Vaccines containing tetanus-diphtheria antigens have been postulated to induce cross-reactive immunity to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which could protect against coronavirus disease (COVID-19). In this work, we investigated the capacity of Tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine to prime existing T cell immunity to SARS-CoV-2. To that end, we first collected known SARS-CoV-2 specific CD8+ T cell epitopes targeted during the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans and identified as potentially cross-reactive with Td vaccine those sharing similarity with tetanus-diphtheria vaccine antigens, as judged by Levenshtein edit distances (≤ 20% edits per epitope sequence). As a result, we selected 25 potentially cross-reactive SARS-CoV-2 specific CD8+ T cell epitopes with high population coverage that were assembled into a synthetic peptide pool (TDX pool). Using peripheral blood mononuclear cells, we first determined by intracellular IFNγ staining assays existing CD8+ T cell recall responses to the TDX pool and to other peptide pools, including overlapping peptide pools covering SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein and Nucleocapsid phosphoprotein (NP). In the studied subjects, CD8+ T cell recall responses to Spike and TDX peptide pools were dominant and comparable, while recall responses to NP peptide pool were less frequent and weaker. Subsequently, we studied responses to the same peptides using antigen-inexperienced naive T cells primed/stimulated in vitro with Td vaccine. Priming stimulations were carried out by co-culturing naive T cells with autologous irradiated peripheral mononuclear cells in the presence of Td vaccine, IL-2, IL-7 and IL-15. Interestingly, naive CD8+ T cells stimulated/primed with Td vaccine responded strongly and specifically to the TDX pool, not to other SARS-CoV-2 peptide pools. Finally, we show that Td-immunization of C57BL/6J mice elicited T cells cross-reactive with the TDX pool. Collectively, our findings support that tetanus-diphtheria vaccines can prime SARS-CoV-2 cross-reactive T cells and likely contribute to shape the T cell responses to the virus.

Background: The amygdala is highly implicated in an array of psychiatric disorders but is not accessible using currently available noninvasive neuromodulatory techniques. Low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound (TFUS) is a neuromodulatory technique that has the capability of reaching subcortical regions noninvasively. Methods: We studied healthy older adult participants (N = 21, ages 48-79 years) who received TFUS targeting the right amygdala and left entorhinal cortex (active control region) using a 2-visit within-participant crossover design. Before and after TFUS, behavioral measures were collected via the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and an emotional reactivity and regulation task utilizing neutral and negatively valenced images from the International Affective Picture System. Heart rate and self-reported emotional valence and arousal were measured during the emotional reactivity and regulation task to investigate subjective and physiological responses to the task. Results: Significant increases in both self-reported arousal in response to negative images and heart rate during emotional reactivity and regulation task intertrial intervals were observed when TFUS targeted the amygdala; these changes were not evident when the entorhinal cortex was targeted. No significant changes were found for state anxiety, self-reported valence to the negative images, cardiac response to the negative images, or emotion regulation. Conclusions: The results of this study provide preliminary evidence that a single session of TFUS targeting the amygdala may alter psychophysiological and subjective emotional responses, indicating some potential for future neuropsychiatric applications. However, more work on TFUS parameters and targeting optimization is necessary to determine how to elicit changes in a more clinically advantageous way.


Transcranial focused ultrasound (TFUS) is an emerging brain stimulation technique with the ability to noninvasively alter the activity of deep brain regions. Studying the potential for TFUS to alter behavioral response and processing, this study employed MRI-guided TFUS targeting the right amygdala in older adults. We found that TFUS targeting the right amygdala increased self-reported arousal in response to negative images, providing preliminary evidence that a single session of TFUS may be capable of affecting emotional reactivity.

Empathy is a fundamental social ability that allows humans to infer others' emotions and intentions. Empathy is thought to be rooted in bodily sensations coming from the autonomic nervous system. In parallel, the functionality and perceptions coming from the autonomic nervous system could be improved by practicing activities that involve mind-body interactions, such as meditation. Furthermore, perceptions from the autonomic nervous system are thought to be important in the embodiment of abstract concepts. Consequently, in the current study, we collected data online from 581 participants and explored the associations between levels of empathy and (1) the practice of meditation, music, and sports; (2) the impact of self-report measures on bodily awareness and reactivity; and (3) the embodiment of abstract concepts in interoception. In line with previous studies, Meditators were found to have higher empathy scores than Non-Meditators. In addition, lower levels of autonomic reactivity in organs above the diaphragm were associated with higher empathy. Finally, we also observed that empathy was positively associated with interoceptive components of abstract concepts in those participants with high autonomic reactivity. Taken together, the results suggest that meditation practice and having low autonomic reactivity are associated with empathy, arguably through the downregulation of autonomic responses. Implications for mind-body interaction in meditation and its role in promoting empathy are discussed.

The kinetic study of the gas-phase reactions of hydroxyl (OH) radicals and chlorine (Cl) atoms with CF3CHFCF2OCH3 (HFE-356mec3) and CHF2CHFOCF3 (HFE-236ea1) was performed by the pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence technique and a relative method by using Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as detection technique. The temperature dependences of the OH-rate coefficients (kOH(T) in cm3s-1) between 263 and 353 K are well described by the following expressions: 9.93 × 10-13exp{-(988 ± 35)/T}for HFE-356mec3 and 4.75 × 10-13exp{-(1285 ± 22)/T} for HFE-236ea1. Under NOx-free conditions, the rate coefficients kCl at 298 K and 1013 mbar (760 Torr) of air were determined to be (2.30 ± 1.08) × 10-13 cm3s-1and (1.19 ± 0.10) × 10-15 cm3s-1, for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1, respectively. Additionally, the relative kinetic study of the Cl + CH2ClCHCl2 reaction was investigated at 298 K, as it was used as a reference reaction in the kinetic study of the Cl-reaction with HFE-356mec3 and discrepant rate coefficients were found in the literature. The global atmospheric lifetimes were estimated relative to CH3CCl3 at the tropospheric mean temperature (272 K) as 1.4 and 8.6 years for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1, respectively. These values combined with the radiative efficiencies for HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1 derived from the measured IR absorption cross sections (0.27 and 0.41 W m-2 ppv-1) yield global warming potentials at a 100-yrs time horizon of 143 and 1473, respectively. The contribution of HFE-356mec3 and HFE-236ea1 to global warming of the atmosphere would be large if they become widespread increasing their atmospheric concentration.

Skin sensitization is a key endpoint for safety assessment, especially for cosmetics and personal care products. The adverse outcome pathway for skin sensitization and the chemical and biological events driving the induction of human skin sensitization are now well understood. Several non-animal test methods have been developed to predict sensitizer potential by measuring the impact of chemical sensitizers on these key events. In this work, we have focused on Key Event 1 (the molecular initiating step), which is based on formation of a covalent adduct between skin sensitizers and endogenous proteins and/or peptides in the skin. There exists three in-chemico assays approved by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development-(1) Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (DPRA), (2) Amino Acid Derivative Reactivity Assay (ADRA), and (3) Kinetic Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (kDPRA) to quantify peptide/amino acid derivative depletion after incubation with test chemicals. However, overestimated depletion of the cysteine-based peptide/amino acid derivatives is known in such assays because of the dimerization of the thiol group. In this present work, we report the synthesis and structural confirmation of the dimer of N-(2-[1-naphthyl]acetyl)-L-cysteine (NAC) from the ADRA assay to allow simultaneous determination of (a) peptide depletion by quantifying NAC monomer and (b) peptide dimerization by quantifying NAC dimer thereby eliminating the overestimation. We present a case study with three chemicals to demonstrate the importance of this approach. Thus, this simultaneous assay gives a more informed view of the peptide reactivity of chemicals to better identify skin sensitizers.

Reactive astrocytes are known to exert detrimental effects upon neurons in several neurodegenerative diseases, yet our understanding of how astrocytes promote neurotoxicity remains incomplete, especially in human systems. In this study, we leveraged human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) models to examine how reactivity alters astrocyte function and mediates neurodegeneration. hPSC-derived astrocytes were induced to a reactive phenotype, at which point they exhibited a hypertrophic profile and increased complement C3 expression. Functionally, reactive astrocytes displayed decreased intracellular calcium, elevated phagocytic capacity, and decreased contribution to the blood-brain barrier. Subsequently, co-culture of reactive astrocytes with a variety of neuronal cell types promoted morphological and functional alterations. Furthermore, when reactivity was induced in astrocytes from patient-specific hPSCs (glaucoma, Alzheimer's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), the reactive state exacerbated astrocytic disease-associated phenotypes. These results demonstrate how reactive astrocytes modulate neurodegeneration, significantly contributing to our understanding of a role for reactive astrocytes in neurodegenerative diseases.

Flexible crystalline solids exhibit unique properties in response to external stimuli like heat and light. However, challenges exist in developing crystalline solids that have similar degrees of flexibility as in solution. Herein, we report the preparation of the new flexible crystalline metal complex [Cd(CF3SO3)2(4-spy)4] (4-spy=4-styrylpyridine), which contains photoreactive 4-spy ligand. Unlike traditional solids, this metal complex displays solution state-like [2+2] photocycloaddition reactivity. Specifically, UV irradiation of the crystalline material leads to formation of the same diverse array of dimers and cis isomer that are generated by photoreaction in the solution state. In addition, the photoresponsive flexibility of the solid leads to a photosalient effect and photo-induced formation of pores. The origin of the solution state-like photoreactivity of the solid is related to properties of the Cd(II) cation and fluorinated CF3SO3 anion, and the multi-orientational arrangement of the 4-spy ligands.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus is the most prevalent tick-transmitted orthoflavivirus in Europe. Due to the nonspecific nature of its symptoms, TBE is primarily diagnosed by ELISA-based detection of specific antibodies in the patient serum. However, cross-reactivity between orthoflaviviruses complicates the diagnosis. Specificity issues may be mitigated by serum neutralization assays (SNT), although the handling of clinically relevant orthoflaviviruses requires biosafety level (BSL) 3 conditions and they have highly divergent viral kinetics and cell tropisms. In the present study, we established a reporter virus particle (RVP)-based SNT in which the infectivity is measured by luminescence and that can be performed under BSL-2 conditions. The RVP-based SNT for TBEV exhibited a highly significant correlation with the traditional virus-based SNT (R2 = 0.8637, p < 0.0001). The RVP-based assay demonstrated a sensitivity of 92.3% (95% CI: 79.7%-97.4%) and specificity of 100% (95% CI: 81.6%-100%). We also tested the cross-reactivity of serum samples in RVP-based assays against other orthoflaviviruses (yellow fever virus, dengue virus type 2, Zika virus, West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis virus). Interestingly, all serum samples which had tested TBEV-positive by ELISA but negative by RVP-based SNT were reactive for antibodies against other orthoflaviviruses. Thus, the RVP-based seroneutralization assay provides an added value in clinical diagnostics as well as in epidemiological studies.

OBJECTIVE: Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective treatment for depression, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of rTMS and other treatment options, such as antidepressants. In this multicenter randomized controlled trial, rTMS was compared with the next pharmacological treatment step in patients with treatment-resistant depression. METHODS: Patients with unipolar nonpsychotic depression (N=89) with an inadequate response to at least two treatment trials were randomized to treatment with rTMS or to a switch of antidepressants, both in combination with psychotherapy. Treatment duration was 8 weeks and consisted of either 25 high-frequency rTMS sessions to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex or a switch of antidepressant medication following the Dutch treatment algorithm. The primary outcome was change in depression severity based on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D). Secondary outcomes were response and remission rates as well as change in symptom dimensions (anhedonia, anxiety, sleep, rumination, and cognitive reactivity). Finally, expectations regarding treatment were assessed. RESULTS: rTMS resulted in a significantly larger reduction in depressive symptoms than medication, which was also reflected in higher response (37.5% vs. 14.6%) and remission (27.1% vs. 4.9%) rates. A larger decrease in symptoms of anxiety and anhedonia was observed after rTMS compared with a switch in antidepressants, and no difference from the medication group was seen for symptom reductions in rumination, cognitive reactivity, and sleep disorders. Expectations regarding treatment correlated with changes in HAM-D scores. CONCLUSIONS: In a sample of patients with moderately treatment-resistant depression, rTMS was more effective in reducing depressive symptoms than a switch of antidepressant medication. In addition, the findings suggest that the choice of treatment may be guided by specific symptom dimensions.

Sulphotransferases (SULTs) are a major phase II metabolic enzyme class contributing ~20 % to the Phase II metabolism of FDA-approved drugs. Ignoring the potential for SULT-mediated metabolism leaves a strong potential for drug-drug interactions, often causing late-stage drug discovery failures or black-boxed warnings on FDA labels. The existing models use only accessibility descriptors and machine learning (ML) methods for class and site of sulfonation (SOS) predictions for SULT. In this study, a variety of accessibility, reactivity, and hybrid models and algorithms have been developed to make accurate substrate and SOS predictions. Unlike the literature models, reactivity parameters for the aliphatic or aromatic hydroxyl groups (R/Ar-O-H), the Bond Dissociation Energy (BDE) gave accurate models with a True Positive Rate (TPR)=0.84 for SOS predictions. We offer mechanistic insights to explain these novel findings that are not recognized in the literature. The accessibility parameters like the ratio of Chemgauss4 Score (CGS) and Molecular Weight (MW) CGS/MW and distance from cofactor (Dis) were essential for class predictions and showed TPR=0.72. Substrates consistently had lower BDE, Dis, and CGS/MW than non-substrates. Hybrid models also performed acceptablely for SOS predictions. Using the best models, Algorithms gave an acceptable performance in class prediction: TPR=0.62, False Positive Rate (FPR)=0.24, Balanced accuracy (BA)=0.69, and SOS prediction: TPR=0.98, FPR=0.60, and BA=0.69. A rule-based method was added to improve the predictive performance, which improved the algorithm TPR, FPR, and BA. Validation using an external dataset of drug-like compounds gave class prediction: TPR=0.67, FPR=0.00, and SOS prediction: TPR=0.80 and FPR=0.44 for the best Algorithm. Comparisons with standard ML models also show that our algorithm shows higher predictive performance for classification on external datasets. Overall, these models and algorithms (SOS predictor) give accurate substrate class and site (SOS) predictions for SULT-mediated Phase II metabolism and will be valuable to the drug discovery community in academia and industry. The SOS predictor is freely available for academic/non-profit research via the GitHub link.

We examined age differences in the within-person relationships among perceived stress (PS), perceived stress reactivity (PSR), and depressive affect (DA) as well as potential mechanisms of depression with a longitudinal moderated mediation model. Participants from the Notre Dame Study of Health & Wellbeing (N = 572) completed two to four waves of yearly assessments. Sequentially built multilevel models, in which year was nested within person, illustrated that only midlife adults experience an exacerbated effect of within-person fluctuations in PSR on the relationship between within-person PS and DA levels (γ41 = -.004, p < .01). Findings further suggest that PSR accounts for the PS-DA relationship. Furthermore, older adults illustrate successful emotion regulation strategies at the yearly level-resisting the negative ramifications of years of greater PS and PSR, whereas midlife adults who experience years of greater PSR would particularly benefit from stress management interventions and monitoring of DA levels.

The structure-activity relationships of nonsolvating cosolvents for organosulfur-based electrolyte systems were revealed. The performance of nonsolvating dilutant fluorobenzene (FB) was compared to various fluorinated ether dilutants in high-voltage electrolytes containing a concentration of 1.2 M LiPF6 dissolved in fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), ethyl methyl sulfone (EMS), and the dilutant. In a high-voltage and high-loading LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) full cell configuration, the organosulfur-based electrolyte containing FB dilutant enabled superior electrochemical performance compared to the electrolytes using other nonsolvating fluorinated ether formulations. Moreover, the FB-containing electrolyte exhibited the highest ionic conductivity and lowest viscosity among all organosulfur-based electrolytes containing nonsolvating dilutant. These improvements are attributed to the enhanced physical properties of electrolyte and lithium-ion mobility. Furthermore, by employing first-principles simulations, the observed suppression of side reactions at high voltage is linked to FB's lower reactivity toward singlet dioxygen, which is likely produced at the NMC interface. Overall, FB is considered an excellent diluent that does not impede cell operation by mass decomposition at the cathode.

Astrocytes are the most abundant and morphologically complex glial cells that play active roles in the central nervous system (CNS). Recent research has identified shared and region-specific astrocytic genes and functions, elucidated the cellular origins of their regional diversity, and uncovered the molecular networks for astrocyte morphology, which are essential for their functional complexity. Reactive astrocytes exhibit a wide range of functional diversity in a context-specific manner in CNS disorders. This review discusses recent advances in understanding the molecular and morphological diversity of astrocytes in healthy individuals and those with neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a potential pharmacotherapy for alcohol use disorder (AUD), but it is not known whether it modulates neural activation to alcohol cues or intrinsic functional connectivity. We investigated whether NAC attenuates (i) alcohol cue-elicited activation, and (ii) intrinsic functional connectivity compared to placebo in patients with AUD. In this preliminary study, twenty-three individuals (7 females) with moderate-severe AUD received daily NAC (2400 mg/day, n = 9), or a placebo (n = 14) for at least 2 weeks. Participants completed a pre-treatment functional magnetic resonance imaging session (T0) and a post-treatment session (T1) comprising resting-state and visual alcohol cue reactivity task acquisitions. Activation differences between sessions, treatment, and session-by-treatment interaction were assessed. Resting-state functional connectivity examined using 377 node ROI-to-ROIs evaluated whether NAC reduced intrinsic functional connectivity after treatment. There were no differences in alcohol cue reactivity for brain activation or subjective craving between NAC and placebo during treatment or across sessions, or significant interaction. A significant treatment-by-time interaction, with reduced intrinsic connectivity was observed after treatment (T1) for NAC-treated compared to placebo-treated patients in the posterior cingulate node (9, left hemisphere) of the dorsal attentional network and connections to salience, ventral-attentional, somatosensory, and visual-peripheral networks implicated in AUD. NAC reduced intrinsic functional connectivity in patients with moderate-severe AUD after treatment compared to placebo, but did not attenuate alcohol cue-elicited activation. However, the absence of cue reactivity findings may result from low power, rather than the absence of cue reactivity findings associated with NAC. These results provide preliminary evidence that NAC treatment may modulate intrinsic functional connectivity brain activation in patients with alcohol use disorder, but replication in larger studies are required to determine the strength of this effect and any associations with clinical outcomes. Food cue reactivity, or behavioral sensitivity to conditioned food cues, is an eating pattern observed in those with obesity and binge-eating disorder. The reinforcer pathology model, which characterizes overconsumption of a reinforcer such as food may be relevant to food cue reactivity, especially in those with obesity and binge-eating disorder. The reinforcer pathology model posits that steep delay discounting (DD) and demand elasticity are processes involved in the overconsumption of food. Two of our recent studies examine the extent to which reactivity to conditioned food cues may be involved in food reinforcer pathologies. First, food cues were conditioned with Oreo cookies with binge-eating prone (BEP) and binge-eating resistant (BER) rats. Delay discounting was compared before and after conditioning. Food cues induced steeper DD for rats, though BEP rats showed some evidence for greater sensitivity to this effect than BER rats, albeit this difference was not significant. Second, healthy-weight humans and humans with overweight/obese BMI underwent conditioning of visual cues paired with M&M candies. After acquisition, cues induced greater demand intensity and inelasticity for food compared to baseline. Participants with overweight/obese BMI, compared to controls, also showed some evidence for greater sensitivity to this change ininelasticity compared to healthy-weight participants, but this difference was also not significant. Food cues, then, may induce changes in DD and economic demand, supporting the relevance of reinforcer pathologies.

Introduction. In India, the SARS-CoV-2 Delta wave (2020-2021) faded away with the advent of the Omicron variants (2021-present). Dengue incidences were observed to be less in Southeast Asia during the active years of the pandemic (2020-2021). However, dengue virus type 3 (DV3) cases were increasingly reported in this region (including India) concurrent with the progression of the Omicron waves since 2022.Hypothesis. What could be the reason(s) behind this unusual DV3 surge after an overall dip in dengue incidences in many parts of Southeast Asia?Aim. We, therefore, investigated the current state of cross-reactivity of prevalent (Omicron era) SARS-CoV-2 serums with different DV serotypes and evaluated the impact of such serums on DV neutralization in cell culture.Methodology. Fifty-five COVID-19 serum samples (January-September 2022) and three pre-pandemic archived serum samples from apparently healthy individuals were tested for DV or SARS-CoV-2 IgM/IgG using the lateral flow immunoassays. DV1-4 virus neutralization tests (VNTs) were done with the SARS-CoV-2 antibody (Ab)-positive serums in Huh7 cells. DV3 envelope (env) gene was PCR amplified and sequenced for three archived DV isolates, one from 2017 and two from 2021.Results. SARS-CoV-2 Ab-positive samples constituted 74.5 % of the serums. Of these, 41.5 % were DV cross-reactive and 58.5 % were not. The DV cross-reactive serums neutralized all DV serotypes (DV1-4), as per previous results and this study. The DV non-cross-reactive serums (58.5 %) also cross-neutralized DV1, 2 and 4 but increased DV3 infectivity by means of antibody-dependent enhancement of infection as evident from significantly higher DV3 titres in VNT compared to control serums. The DV3 envelope was identical among the three isolates, including isolate 1 used in VNTs. Our results suggest that DV cross-reactivity of SARS-CoV-2 serums diminished with the shift from Delta to Omicron prevalence. Such COVID-19 serums (DV non-cross-reactive) might have played a major role in causing DV3 surge during the Omicron waves.Conclusion. Patients suspected of dengue or COVID-19 should be subjected to virus/antigen tests and serological tests for both the diseases for definitive diagnosis, prognosis and disease management.

Introduction Controlling the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO 2 ) is an important consideration in patients with intracranial steno-occlusive disease to avoid reductions in critical perfusion from vasoconstriction due to hypocapnia, or reductions in blood flow due to steal physiology during hypercapnia. However, the normal range for resting PCO 2 in this patient population is not known. Therefore, we investigated the variability in resting end-tidal PCO 2 (P ET CO 2 ) in patients with intracranial steno-occlusive disease and the impact of revascularization on resting P ET CO 2 in these patients. Setting and Design Tertiary care center, retrospective chart review Materials and Methods We collected resting P ET CO 2 values in adult patients with intracranial steno-occlusive disease who presented to our institution between January 2010 and June 2021. We also explored postrevascularization changes in resting P ET CO 2 in a subset of patients. Results Two hundred and twenty-seven patients were included [moyamoya vasculopathy ( n = 98) and intracranial atherosclerotic disease ( n = 129)]. In the whole cohort, mean ± standard deviation resting P ET CO 2 was 37.8 ± 3.9 mm Hg (range: 26-47). In patients with moyamoya vasculopathy and intracranial atherosclerotic disease, resting P ET CO 2 was 38.4 ± 3.6 mm Hg (range: 28-47) and 37.4 ± 4.1 mm Hg (range: 26-46), respectively. A trend was identified suggesting increasing resting P ET CO 2 after revascularization in patients with low preoperative resting P ET CO 2 (<38 mm Hg) and decreasing resting P ET CO 2 after revascularization in patients with high preoperative resting P ET CO 2 (>38 mm Hg). Conclusion This study demonstrates that resting P ET CO 2 in patients with intracranial steno-occlusive disease is highly variable. In some patients, there was a change in resting P ET CO 2 after a revascularization procedure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Allergy diagnostics and immunotherapeutics in Asia heavily rely on imported products from Western countries, raising concerns about the accuracy and efficacy of these products for the management of Asian allergy patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent advancements in allergen research have led to the identification and characterization of novel allergens from indigenous Korean species. While some allergens share homology with well-known allergens, others lack counterparts in imported allergen extracts. Classifying regional allergens in Asia into three categories based on their cross-reactivity with imported allergens offers valuable insights. Highly cross-reactive allergens, such as oak allergens Que m 1 from Quercus mongolica and Que ac 1 from Q. acutissima, can be effectively substituted with the imported allergens. Allergens with partial cross-reactivity, like the Asian needle ant allergen Pac c 3 (Antigen 5), permit limited diagnostic value by the currently available products. Unique allergens, including the Japanese hop allergen Hum j 6 (pectin methylesterase inhibitor) and the silkworm pupa allergen Bomb m 4 (30 kDa hemolymph lipoprotein) lack alternatives in the available product list. Greater attention is needed, particularly for species listed as ecologically invasive in Western regions. Additionally, allergens from domestic fruits and vegetables causing pollen food allergy syndrome require characterization for the development of improved diagnostics.
