To facilitate exploration of the immense range of gastrointestinal parasites in horses and the impact of parasitism on equine health, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence and risk factors associated with these infections in horses reared in different management systems in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Samples were collected from 208 horses: 91 from extensive, 64 from semi-extensive, and 53 from intensive rearing systems. The identified helminths included those of the Strongylida order (80.29%), Parascaris equorum (3.36%), Oxyuris equi (4.33%), and Anoplocephala spp. (1.92%). By analyzing the coproculture results to differentiate among Strongylida order parasites, species such as Strongylus vulgaris, S. edentatus, S. equinus, Triodontophorus spp., and Trichostrongylus axei, in addition to members of the Cyathostominae subfamily, which include Gyalocephalus capitatus and Poteriostomum spp., were identified. The only positive sample of protozoa was that of Cryptosporidium spp. (13%). Regarding the rearing system, animals in the extensive system had a higher proportion of infected horses and a higher chance of infection than those in the other systems. For the variable co-grazing with cattle, only cyathostomins showed a significant difference with relatively low infection risk in co-grazing. Overall, the present study demonstrated a high occurrence of equine gastrointestinal parasites, especially those of the Strongylida order, with emphasis on small strongylids. In addition, analyzing factors associated with infection showed that management variables are important for controlling parasitism in horses.

The present study aimed to evaluate the environmental cost of the production process of broilers from the approach of emergy accounting and carbon sequestration potential for broiler farms. The study assessed a standard farm of the conventional system containing ten houses in 19 ha. We evaluated the following indices solar transformity (Tr), renewability (%R), emergy yield ratio (EYR), emergy investment ratio (EIR), environmental loading ratio (ELR), emergy sustainability index (ESI), and emergy exchange ratio (EER) and carbon sequestration potential of eucalyptus plantation. The total emergy input was 2.79E-06 seJ ha-1 y-1 for the broiler growth process. The highest investment in the production process was related to materials, which came from feeding and electricity. The renewability index indicated the low sustainability of the system with increased consumption of economical materials and equipment, with a low proportion of the emergy use of renewable resources. High investment in broilers production in the conventional system generates an environmental loading ratio that indicates high environmental degradation. Planting trees in the surrounding areas of the farm facilities can minimize the externalities of the production system with the plantation carbon sequestration potential.

An experiment was conducted aiming to evaluate the effect of different levels of crude protein, based on the ideal protein concept and two rearing systems, on productive performance of brown laying hens. A total of 400 Hisex Brown laying hens between 30 and 45 weeks of age were distributed in a completely randomized design and a 2×4 factorial arrangement, with main effects including two rearing systems (cage and floor) and levels of crude protein (140, 150, 160, and 180 g kg−1), totalizing eight treatments. Five replicates with 10 birds each were used per experimental unit. The following parameters were evaluated: egg production, feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and quality traits such as dirty, cracked, or broken eggs. No interaction effect was observed between dietary protein levels and rearing systems for body weight gain, feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio. Feed intake and egg production were higher in the floor rearing system. Feed conversion ratio (kg/dz) was improved in birds reared in the cage system. The rate of cracked and broken eggs was higher in the cage system. The layers reared in the floor system produced a higher percentage of dirty eggs. The dietary protein level did not affect the evaluated parameters. Thus, we conclude that a floor rearing system is an option for layers, and the dietary protein level can be reduced up to 140 g kg−1 for Hisex Brown hens from 30 to 45 weeks of age.(AU)

The aims of this study were to evaluate the characteristics of the reproductive classes and semen quality in curimbatá (Prochilodus lineatus) breeders maintained in two different rearing systems. To achieve this goal, cages (Cs) and earthen ponds (EPs) were used as experimental systems to provide unsuitable and suitable conditions, respectively. The fish were maintained under the experimental conditions for 18 months. During this period, males were randomly sampled every 2 months for biometric analysis (n = 30 per sample) and for an evaluation of selected characteristics of the testes (n = 5 per sample). After this period, males maintained in EPs and males maintained in Cs (CMs) were evaluated in induced breeding experiments. We observed that rearing P. lineatus in a C at a high stocking density for the long 18-month period of study produced reductions in growth, testis development, gonadosomatic index values, and sperm quality in the fish. We found differences between the groups in all the reproductive classes examined, especially in the regression class, which showed a pronounced accumulation of immature germ cells in the CMs. In this group, we also noted a less intense transition from a continuous to discontinuous germinal epithelium, with an extended and abnormal but less intense spermatogenic period resulting in decreases in semen volume and sperm concentration in the breeding season. Together, such dysfunctions resulted in the production of low-quality sperm in the CMs, as demonstrated by lower-quality DNA (as evaluated by the comet assay), low fertilization success, and low hatching success. In conclusion, to ensure high-quality semen in P. lineatus, appropriate management conditions must be provided throughout the reproductive cycle, especially for the regressed class, even in winter, two seasons before the breeding season.

This study aimed to describe the diarrhea and parasites infection, evaluate the occurrence of failure of passive immunity transference and Escherichia coli EIEC/EPEC in heifer calves in calves from birth to one hundred days old, reared in individual crates under paddock. The feces collected weekly during the period September 2009 to June 2011 were examined by flotation in saturated sugar and centrifugal sedimentation in formalin-ether. The coagulation test by 10% glutaraldehyde was used to verify the transfer of passive immunity. The bacterial identification was performed from isolates in specific media. One hundred and eighteen heifers were followed, totaling 1457 fecal samples. The incidence rates of diarrhea and infection by Cryptosporidium, G. intestinalis, Eimeria and helminths were respectively 25.7, 13.2, 16.6, 26.9 and 16.7 new cases per 100 calves week. The average age of calves that had diarrhea was 54.2 ± 26.6, when they eliminated Cryptosporidium oocysts was 52.6 ± 26.1, cysts of G. intestinalis 40.1 ± 20 oocysts of Eimeria 49.5 ± 21.8 and Strongylida type eggs 64.9 ± 22.3 days. In none sample the intensity of infection by Cryptosporidium and Giardia was high. Samples of 62 calves were submited to bacteriological analysis and no sample was characterized as E. coli EPEC/EIEC. In 69.6% of the calves, the amount of immunoglobulins was satisfactory. Despite the high incidence of diarrhea, mortality was low, due to low virulence of bioagents and low intensities of infection, as well as the system administration of colostrum and adopted creating the property. The similarity between the average age of calves with diarrhea and those eliminated Cryptosporidium spp. probably indicates that this bioagent, among those surveyed, is primarily responsible for diarrheal observed frames.(AU)
Este trabalho teve como objetivos descrever a diarreia e a infecção por parasitas e, avaliar a ocorrência de falha na transferência de imunidade passiva e de Escherichia coli enteropatogênica/enteroinvasiva em bezerras do nascimento aos cem dias de idade, criadas em sistema de abrigo individual em piquete. As fezes coletadas, semanalmente, durante o período de setembro de 2009 a junho de 2011 foram examinadas por meio das técnicas de centrífugo-flutuação em solução saturada de açúcar e centrífugo-sedimentação em formol-éter. O teste de coagulação pelo glutaraldeído a 10% foi utilizado para verificar a transferência de imunidade passiva. A identificação bacteriológica foi realizada a partir de isolamentos em meios específicos. Cento e dezoito bezerras foram acompanhadas, totalizando 1457 amostras fecais. As taxas de incidência de diarreia e de infecção por Cryptosporidium, G. intestinalis, Eimeria e helmintos foram respectivamente 25,7; 13,2; 16,6; 26,9 e 16,7 casos novos por 100 bezerras-semana. A média de idade de bezerras que apresentaram diarreia foi 54,2±26,6, quando eliminaram oocistos de Cryptosporidium foi de 52,6±26,1, cistos de G. intestinalis 40,1±20, oocistos de Eimeria 49,5±21,8 e ovos do tipo Strongylida 64,9±22,3 dias. Apesar da alta incidência de diarreia, a letalidade foi baixa, possivelmente devido pouca virulência dos bioagentes e às baixas intensidades das infecções, assim como, aos sistema de administração de colostro e de criação adotado na propriedade. Production variables were above breeders standards and not significantly affected by rearing system. Dirty eggs and cracked eggs were more frequent in FR birds. Meat spots were significantly more frequent in FR hens at middle lay, but less frequently at the end of the laying period. Rearing system did not influence egg and yolk weight or unit Haugh and shell colour. Among FR hens, eggshell density, thickness and mass were significantly lower at the end of the laying period. Rearing system did not affect claw length, but the plumage of FR hens was negatively affected at the end of production cycle.
Avaliou-se a influência dos sistemas de criação (em piso ou em baterias) sobre o desempenho produtivo, a qualidade de ovos e a condição física de poedeiras alojadas em gaiolas enriquecidas. Dois grupos de 180 frangas Isa brown foram criados em baterias (CR) ou em piso (FR) e transferidos para gaiolas enriquecidas, onde a produção, a qualidade de ovos e a condição física foram observadas durante um ciclo completo de postura (18-78 semanas de idade). Com 17 semanas de idade, as frangas foram alojadas em 36 gaiolas enriquecidas, 10 aves por gaiolas, cada uma contendo um ninho, poleiros, banho de areia e lixas de unhas. De 19 a 78 semanas de idade, a produção de ovos foi registrada diariamente. A qualidade comercial dos ovos foi medida mensalmente. Nas semanas 19 e 78 de idade, o comprimento das unhas e a condição da plumagem foram avaliadas utilizando-se uma escala de quatro pontos, numa amostra de 10 por cento das aves. As variáveis produtivas estiveram acima dos padrões da linhagem e não foram afetadas significativamente pelo sistema de cria. O sistema de cria não influenciou o peso dos ovos, a gema, a cor da casca ou as unidades Haugh. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of total replacement of dry corn by wet grain corn silage (WGCS) in the feed of label broilers older than 28 days of age on performance, mortality, carcass, parts, breast meat and thighs meat yields, and meat quality. A mixed-sex flock of 448 ISA S 757-N (naked-neck ISA JA Label) day-old chicks was randomly distributed in to randomized block experimental design with four treatments (T1 - with no WGCS; T2 - WGCS between 28 and 83 days; T3 - WGCS between 42 and 83 days; and T4 - WGCS between 63 and 83 days) and four replicates of 28 birds each. Birds were raised under the same management and feeding conditions until 28 days of age, when they started to have free access to paddock with pasture (at least 3m²/bird) and to be fed the experimental diets. Feed and water were offered ad libitum throughout the rearing period, which was divided in three stages: starter (1 to 28 days), grower (29 to 63 days), and finisher (64 to 83 days) according to the feeding schedule. During the short periods of WGCS use (group T2 during grower stage and T4 during the finisher stage), performance and mortality results were similar as to those of the control group (T1). At the end of the experiment, it was observed that the extended use of WGCS (T2 and T3) determined a negative effect on feed conversion ratio. However, the best results of breast meat yield were observed with birds fed WGCS since 28 days (T2). It was concluded that WGCS can replace dry corn grain for short periods during the grower and finisher stages with no impairment of meat quality and yield in slow growth broilers.

This study aimed at evaluating the effect of total replacement of dry corn by wet grain corn silage (WGCS) in the feed of label broilers older than 28 days of age on performance, mortality, carcass, parts, breast meat and thighs meat yields, and meat quality. A mixed-sex flock of 448 ISA S 757-N (naked-neck ISA JA Label) day-old chicks was randomly distributed in to randomized block experimental design with four treatments (T1 - with no WGCS; T2 - WGCS between 28 and 83 days; T3 - WGCS between 42 and 83 days; and T4 - WGCS between 63 and 83 days) and four replicates of 28 birds each. Birds were raised under the same management and feeding conditions until 28 days of age, when they started to have free access to paddock with pasture (at least 3m²/bird) and to be fed the experimental diets. Feed and water were offered ad libitum throughout the rearing period, which was divided in three stages: starter (1 to 28 days), grower (29 to 63 days), and finisher (64 to 83 days) according to the feeding schedule. During the short periods of WGCS use (group T2 during grower stage and T4 during the finisher stage), performance and mortality results were similar as to those of the control group (T1). At the end of the experiment, it was observed that the extended use of WGCS (T2 and T3) determined a negative effect on feed conversion ratio. However, the best results of breast meat yield were observed with birds fed WGCS since 28 days (T2). It was concluded that WGCS can replace dry corn grain for short periods during the grower and finisher stages with no impairment of meat quality and yield in slow growth broilers.
