RESUMO

There is considerable evidence linking cognitive reflection with utilitarian judgments in dilemmas that involve sacrificing someone else for the greater good. However, the evidence is mixed on the question of whether cognitive reflection is associated with utilitarian judgments in self-sacrificial dilemmas. We employed process dissociation to extract a self-sacrificial utilitarian (SU) parameter, an altruism (A) parameter, an other-sacrificial (OU) utilitarian parameter, and a deontology (D) parameter. In Study 1, the cognitive reflection test (CRT) positively correlated with both SU and OU (replicated in Studies 2 and 4, pre-registered). In Study 2, we found that instructing participants to rely on reason increased SU and OU (replicated in Study 4, pre-registered). In Study 3, we found that SU and OU positively correlated with giving in the single-game version of the public goods game (replicated in Study 4, pre-registered), which provides behavioral validation that they are genuine moral tendencies. Together, these studies constitute strong cumulative evidence that SU and OU are both valid measures that are associated with reliance on cognitive reflection.

RESUMO

Gender role attitudes have been shown to play a critical role in individuals' fertility intentions. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear. The present study examined whether parental sacrifice mediates the relationship between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions, and whether subjective well-being plays a moderating role. A sample of 446 Chinese adults aged 18 to 45 (Mage = 32.78, SDage = 5.63, 60.93% female) completed the Gender Role Attitude Scale, Parental Sacrifice Scale, Index of Well-Being, and Fertility Attitude Scale. Multiple regression analyses showed that traditional gender role attitudes positively predicted fertility intentions, while egalitarian gender role attitudes negatively predicted fertility intentions. Moreover, parental sacrifice was found to partially mediate the relationship between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions. Additionally, subjective well-being was identified as a moderator of the mediating effect of parental sacrifice. Specifically, for individuals with low subjective well-being, parental sacrifice played a partially mediating role. However, for individuals with high subjective well-being, the mediating effect of parental sacrifice was not significant, and gender role attitudes directly influenced fertility intentions. This study adds to our understanding of the connection between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions of adults, providing important information for policymakers and professionals aiming to promote fertility intentions.

RESUMO

Azobenzene, while relevant, has faced constraints in biological system applications due to its suboptimal quantum yield and short-wavelength emission. This study presents a pioneering strategy for fabricating organic microdots by coupling foldamer-linked azobenzene, resulting in robust fluorescence intensity and stability, especially in aggregated states, thereby showing promise for bioimaging applications. Comprehensive experimental and computational examinations elucidate the mechanisms underpinning enhanced photostability and fluorescence efficacy. In vitro and in vivo evaluations disclose that the external layer of cis-azo-foldamer microdots performs a self-sacrificial function during photo-bleaching. Consequently, these red-fluorescent microdots demonstrate extraordinary structural and photochemical stabilities over extended periods. The conjugation of a ß-peptide foldamer to the azobenzene chromophore through a glycine linker instigates a blue-shifted and amplified π*-n transition. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the aggregated state of cis-azo-foldamers fortifies the stability of cis isomers, thereby augmenting fluorescence efficiency. This investigation furnishes crucial insights into conceptualizing novel, biologically inspired materials, promising stable and enduring imaging applications, and carries implications for diverse arenas such as medical diagnostics, drug delivery, and sensing technologies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Tumors located in the retrochiasmatic region with extension to the third ventricle might be difficult to access when the pituitary-chiasmatic corridor is narrow. Similarly, tumor extension into the interpeduncular and retrosellar space poses a major surgical challenge. Pituitary transposition techniques have been developed to gain additional access. However, when preoperative pituitary function is already impaired or the risk of postoperative panhypopituitarism (PH) is considered to be particularly high, removal of the pituitary gland (PG) might be the preferred option to increase the working corridor. The aim of this study was to describe the relevant surgical anatomy, operative steps, and clinical experience with the endoscopic endonasal pituitary sacrifice (EEPS) and transsellar approach. METHODS: This study comprised anatomical dissections to highlight the relevant surgical steps and a retrospective case series reporting clinical characteristics, indications, and outcomes of patients who underwent EEPS. The surgical technique is as follows: both lateral opticocarotid recesses are exposed laterally, the limbus sphenoidale superiorly, and the sellar floor inferiorly. After opening the dura, the PG is detached circumferentially and mobilized off the medial walls of the cavernous sinuses. The descending branches of the superior hypophyseal artery are coagulated, and the stalk is transected. After removal of the PG, drilling of the dorsum sellae and bilateral posterior clinoidectomies are performed to gain access to the hypothalamic region, interpeduncular, and prepontine cisterns. RESULTS: From 2018 to 2023, 11 patients underwent EEPS. The cohort comprised mostly tuberoinfundibular craniopharyngiomas (n = 8, 73%). Seven (64%) patients had partial or complete anterior PG dysfunction preoperatively, while 4 (36%) had preoperative diabetes insipidus. Because of the specific tumor configuration, the chance of preserving endocrine function was estimated to be very low in patients with intact function. The main reasons for pituitary sacrifice were impaired visibility and surgical accessibility to the retrochiasmatic and retrosellar spaces. Gross-total tumor resection was achieved in 10 (91%) patients and near-total resection in 1 (9%) patient. Two (18%) patients experienced a postoperative CSF leak, requiring surgical revision. CONCLUSIONS: When preoperative pituitary function is already impaired or the risk for postoperative PH is considered particularly high, the EEPS and transsellar approach appears to be a feasible surgical option to improve visibility and accessibility to the retrochiasmatic hypothalamic and retrosellar spaces, thus increasing tumor resectability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe the distribution pattern of cerebellar hemispheric tentorial bridging (CHTB) veins on the tentorial surface in a case series of perimedian or paramedian supracerebellar approaches and to describe a novel technique to preserve these veins. METHODS: A series of 141 patients with various pathological processes in different locations was operated on via perimedian or paramedian supracerebellar approaches by the senior author from July 2006 through October 2022 and was retrospectively evaluated. During surgery, the number and locations of all CHTB veins were recorded to establish a distribution map on the tentorial surface, divided into nine zones. Patients were classified into four groups according to the surgical technique used to manage CHTB veins: 1) group 1 consisted of CHTB veins preserved without intervention during surgery or no CHTB veins found in the surgical route; 2) group 2 included CHTB veins coagulated during surgery; 3) group 3 included CHTB veins preserved with arachnoid and/or tentorial dissection from the cerebellar or tentorial surface, respectively; and 4) group 4 comprised CHTB veins preserved using a novel tentorial cut technique. RESULTS: Overall, 141 patients were included in the study. Of these 141 patients, 38 were in group 1 (27%), 32 in group 2 (22.7%), 47 in group 3 (33.3%), and 24 in group 4 (17%). The total number of CHTB veins encountered was 207 during surgeries on one side. According to the distribution zones of the tentorium, zone 5 had the highest density of CHTB veins, while zone 7 had the lowest. Of the patients in group 4, 6 underwent the perimedian supracerebellar approach and 18 had the paramedian supracerebellar approach. There were 39 CHTB veins on the surface of the 24 cerebellar hemispheres in group 4. The tentorial cut technique was performed for 27 of 39 CHTB veins. Twelve veins were not addressed because they did not present any obstacles during approaches. During surgery, no complications were observed due to the tentorial cut technique. CONCLUSIONS: Because there is no way to determine whether a CHTB vein can be sacrificed without complications, it is important to protect these veins in supracerebellar approaches. This new tentorial cut technique in perimedian or paramedian supracerebellar approaches makes it possible to preserve CHTB veins encountered during supracerebellar surgeries.

RESUMO

With modern civilization and the rise in literacy, cases of human sacrifice are rarely encountered by forensic practitioners. Human sacrifice, also called 'Narabali' in India, involves an act of deliberately killing an individual due to ritualistic beliefs for the appeasement of the Gods, spirits, or ancestors. Human sacrifice and ritual murder are often considered synonymous, but ritual murder further involves offering the body part to the deity after killing. Diverse methods were historically adopted for human sacrifice across the globe, strongly influenced by their superstitious, religious, and cultural beliefs. Cases of human sacrifice mostly involve children. We report the rare case of human sacrifice involving an adult victim assaulted by a sharp weapon over the posterior aspect of the neck. The deceased succumbed due to the transection of the cervical spine and corresponding spinal cord. Corroboration of circumstances of death and profiles of the deceased and the perpetrator with autopsy findings were essential in the investigation. This case report discusses extreme superstitions and beliefs, resulting in homicide.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Medial pivot (MP) designs resemble native knee kinematics and restore the "natural" kinematics of a knee after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, whether to preserve or resect the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is still under debate. We inquired whether sacrificing the PCL would improve range of motion, functional outcomes, and limb alignment compared to preserving the PCL in TKA using medial pivot implants (MP-TKA). METHODS: This prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial consisted of 33 patients (66 knees) undergoing bilateral simultaneous MP-TKA. In one knee, a PCL preservation technique was performed, and in the contralateral knee, the PCL was resected. The primary outcome was postoperative range of motion (ROM). The secondary outcomes were visual analogue scale (VAS) score for knee pain at walking, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for symptoms (KOOS-S) and quality of life (KOOS-QoL), Oxford knee score (OKS), and Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), and measurement of the mechanical femoral-tibial axis (mFTA) on X-ray images. All patients were followed up for a minimum of 2 years after surgery. RESULTS: Patients who underwent MP-TKA with PCL preservation had a similar ROM at 2 years (125.45 ± 7.00 vs. 126.21 ± 6.73, p = 0.65) as those who underwent MP-TKAs with PCL resection. There was also no difference in VAS score (1.94 ± 0.79 vs. 2.00 ± 0.71, respectively, p = 0.51), OKS (39.97 ± 2.01 vs. 39.67 ± 2.03, respectively, p = 0.52), KOOS-S (84.41 ± 3.77 vs. 84.19 ± 3.57, respectively, p = 0.92), KOOS-QoL (82.94 ± 4.76 vs. 82.75 ± 4.70, respectively, p = 0.84), or FJS (72.66 ± 8.99 vs. 72.35 ± 8.64, respectively, p = 0.76) at the 2-year follow-up. No difference in the measurement of the mFTA was found between the two groups (180.27 ± 2.25 vs. 181.30 ± 2.13, respectively, p = 0.59). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that both medial pivot TKA with PCL preservation and PCL resection achieved excellent results. There was no difference at the 2-year follow-up in terms of postoperative ROM, patient-reported outcomes, or radiographic evaluation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic study, Level I.

RESUMO

Background: As an application of inclusive finance in health insurance, inclusive commercial health insurance (ICHI) is a new public-private partnership-based health insurance scheme and has been vigorously promoted by the Chinese government in recent years to develop China Multi-level Health Insurance System, a system that aims to seek a mix of public and private sources to provide more affordable financial protection to all levels of society in line with their needs. However, the overall enrolment of ICHI scheme is still at a low level, and little is known about what influences residents' enrolment intentions. The aim of this study was to examine the multidimensional factors influencing residents' behavioral intentions and to develop a multivariate conceptual model to explore the psychographic process in the formation of enrolment intention. Methods: The empirical data used for model validation were obtained from a cross-sectional study conducted in Nanjing, China, a representative pilot city of ICHI scheme in 2022. Exploratory factor analysis, ANOVA, standard multiple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression were mainly employed for hypothesis testing. Results: The findings revealed that involvement, perceived benefit, and perceived sacrifice are all crucial psychographic process factors in the formation of residents' enrolment intentions. Government participation positively moderates the influence path of "perceived benefit-enrolment intention" but negatively moderates the path of "perceived sacrifice-enrolment intention". Moreover, it was discovered that perceived benefit mediates the effect of involvement on enrolment intention, while perceived sacrifice does not. Conclusions: Improving residents' perceived benefit and involvement degree of the product, as well as reducing their perceived sacrifice, are both key to increasing their enrolment intentions. This study also points out that one of the main dilemmas in the current development of ICHI scheme is the low level of involvement among residents, and that optimizing the product design to make it more relevant to residents' lives is a more beneficial strategy to increase overall involvement.

RESUMO

Human sacrifice is a gruesome and controversial practice where one or more individuals are killed as part of a religious ceremony or as a gift to a deity. While the practice has been widely condemned globally, it still persists in some communities in some countries. Nepal, in particular, has a history of animal sacrifice with larger offerings taking place every five years. While animal sacrifice is legal, the ultimate punishment for engaging in human sacrifice is a legal sentence. This article examines the historical and cultural context of sacrifice in Nepal and explores some contemporary cases of human sacrifice reported in the media. The article also considers the impact of superstitious beliefs and the need for evidence-based attitudes to support human rights.

RESUMO

For patients diagnosed with advanced malignant parotid tumour, radical parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice is part of the treatment. Multiple surgical techniques have been developed to cure facial paralysis in order to restore the function and aesthetics of the face. Despite the large number of publications over time on facial nerve reanimation, a consensus on the timing of the procedure or the donor graft selection has remained to be established. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis to identify and analyse scientific publications on the reconstruction of the facial nerve of patients who underwent radical parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice. The analysis on the topic was conducted using the built-in tool of the Scopus database and VOSviewer software. The first 100 most cited articles were separately reviewed to address the aim of the study. No consensus was found regarding the recommended surgical techniques for facial nerve reanimation. The most used donor cranial nerves for transfer included the following: Masseteric branch of the V nerve, contralateral VII nerve with cross-face graft, the XI nerve and the XII nerve. The best timing of surgery is also controversial depending on pre-exiting pathology and degree of nerve degeneration. However, most of the clinical experience suggests facial nerve restoration immediately after the ablative procedure to reduce complications and improve patients' quality of life.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Pathological bony abnormalities of the craniocervical region in children sometimes require surgical intervention as part of their management. Rarely, abnormal skeletal or vascular anatomy can render traditional surgical techniques ineffective because of the risk of injury to the vertebral artery. To mitigate these risks, a combined endovascular and skull base approach was devised. The authors describe their experience using vertebral artery sacrifice as an adjunctive surgical method to reduce the risk of inadvertent vertebral artery injury during surgical correction of pediatric craniocervical deformity. METHODS: Three patients underwent vertebral artery sacrifice for structural craniocervical pathologies (1 male, 2 females; ages 12, 14, and 3 years). One patient presented with basilar invagination odontogenic brainstem compression, and the other 2 patients presented with congenital cervical fusion. All patients underwent endovascular left vertebral artery sacrifice after passing balloon test occlusion. RESULTS: No adverse effects from the vertebral artery sacrifice were observed. At the last follow-ups (35, 30, and 32 months), all 3 patients had a satisfactory outcome with no adverse effects as a result of their sacrificed artery. CONCLUSIONS: Endovascular vertebral artery sacrifice followed by skull base approaches can be used to effectively and safely treat craniocervical pathology from a variety of pediatric skeletal abnormalities.

RESUMO

Preparing MoS2 -based materials with reasonable structure and catalytic activity to enhance the sluggish kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) conversion is of great significance for Li-S batteries (LSBs) but still remain a challenge. Hence, hollow nanotubes composed of N-doped ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets (N-MoS2 NHTs) are fabricated as efficient S hosts for LSBs by using CdS nanorods as a sacrifice template. Characterization and theoretical results show that the template effectively inhibits the excessive growth of MoS2 sheets, and N doping expands the interlayer spacing and modulates the electronic structure, thus accelerating the mass/electron transfer and enhancing the LiPSs adsorption and transformation. Benefiting from the merits, the N-MoS2 NHTs@S cathode exhibits an excellent initial capacity of 887.8 mAh g-1 and stable cycling performances with capacity fading of only 0.0436% per cycle at 1.0 C (500 cycles). Moreover, even at high S loading that of 7.5 mg cm-2 , the N-MoS2 NHTs@S cathode also presents initial excellent areal capacity of 7.80 mAh cm-2 at 0.2 C. This study offers feasible guidance for designing advanced MoS2 -based cathode materials in LSBs.

RESUMO

During surgeries of the posterior cranial fossa, sacrificing the superior petrosal vein (SPV) can enhance visualization of the operative field but may also lead to postoperative venous infarction with potentially fatal consequences. We previously proposed that the safety of SPV sacrifice depends on whether there are collaterals that can take on the venous flow of the SPV after its sacrifice. Here, we propose several practical strategies that may be able to evaluate the presence of collaterals to the SPV, so that the safety of SPV sacrifice can be assessed.

RESUMO

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical bimetallic pseudocapacitive materials with abundant opening channel and heterojunction structures is rather promising but still challenging for high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, a self-sacrifice-template epitaxial growth strategy was proposed for the first time to construct 3D hierarchical bimetallic pseudocapacitive material. By using this strategy, NiCo2O4 nanowires (NiCo2O4NW) arrayed randomly to form a porous shell via in-situ epitaxial growth fully enclosing a MnO2 tube core, forming multiple transport channels and nano-heterojunctions between MnO2 and NiCo2O4NW, which facilitates electron transfer, i.e. exhibiting high electronic conductivity than any single component. As a result of the self-sacrifice-template epitaxial growth method, special hollow tectorum-like 3D hierarchical structure with considerable inter-nanowire space and hollow interior space enables easy access of electrolyte to NiCo2O4NW surface and MnO2 core, thereby resulting in highly exposed redox active sites of MnO2 core and NiCo2O4NW shell for energy storage. Comprehensive evaluations confirmed MnO2@NiCo2O4NW was a supercapacitor electrode candidate, delivering a superior energy density of 106.37 Wh kg-1. Such performance can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling effect of 3D hierarchical tube and nano-heterojunction structures. The proposed self-sacrifice-template epitaxial growth strategy provides important guidance for designing high-performance energy storage materials.

RESUMO

Ambitious people are characterized by strong motivation toward great and valuable objectives, with the superordinate goal to gain respect and recognition from others. Recent literature regarding ambition demonstrated that it leads individuals to engage in extreme behavior. However, no previous research has investigated under which conditions the relation between ambition and extremism is enhanced. Across two studies, we tested the hypothesis that ambitious individuals are more prone to engage in extreme behavior in the face of relative deprivation (i.e., justice sensitivity), than their less ambitious counterparts. We confirmed our predictions employing a cross-sectional design with an American sample (Study 1) and an experimental design with an Italian sample (Study 2). The present research adds theoretical knowledge and empirical support to the existing literature on ambition, extreme behavior, and relative deprivation, and provides fruitful insight into strategies for preventing extremism.

RESUMO

X-ray µCT imaging is a common technique that is used to gain access to the full-field characterization of materials. Nevertheless, the process can be expensive and time-consuming, thus limiting image availability. A number of existing generative models can assist in mitigating this limitation, but they often lack a sound physical basis. This work presents a physics-supervised generative adversarial networks (GANs) model and applies it to the generation of X-ray µCT images. FEM simulations provide physical information in the form of elastic coefficients. Negative X-ray µCT images of a Hostun sand were used as the target material. During training, image batches were evaluated with nonparametric statistics to provide posterior metrics. A variety of loss functions and FEM evaluation frequencies were tested in a parametric study. The results show, that in several test scenarios, FEM-GANs-generated images proved to be better than the reference images for most of the elasticity coefficients. Although the model failed at perfectly reproducing the three out-of-axis coefficients in most cases, the model showed a net improvement with respect to the GANs reference. The generated images can be used in data augmentation, the calibration of image analysis tools, filling incomplete X-ray µCT images, and generating microscale variability in multiscale applications.

RESUMO

Introduction Wide variations exist in the management of craniopharyngiomas, including pituitary stalk preservation/sacrifice. This study examines the practice patterns over 16 years using the endoscopic endonasal approach for the resection of craniopharyngiomas and it examines the effects of stalk preservation. Methods Retrospective analysis was conducted for 66 patients who underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery for resection of craniopharyngiomas. Patients were stratified into three epochs: 2005 to 2009 ( N = 20), 2010 to 2015 ( N = 23), and 2016 to 2020 ( N = 20), to examine the evolution of surgical outcomes. Subgroup analysis between stalk preservation/stalk sacrifice was conducted for rate of gross total resection, anterior pituitary function preservation, and development of new permanent diabetes insipidus. Results Gross total resection rates across the first, second, and third epochs were 20, 65, and 52%, respectively ( p = 0.042). Stalk preservation across epochs were 100, 5.9, and 52.6% ( p = 0.0001). New permanent diabetes insipidus did not significantly change across epochs (37.5, 68.4, 71.4%; p = 0.078). Preservation of normal endocrine function across epochs was 25, 0, and 23.8%; ( p = 0.001). Postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks significantly decreased over time (40, 4.5, and 0%; [ p = 0.0001]). Stalk preservation group retained higher normal endocrine function (40.9 vs. 0%; p = 0.001) and less normal-preoperative to postoperative panhypopituitarism (18.4 vs. 56%; p = 0.001). Stalk sacrifice group achieved higher GTR (70.8 vs. 28%, p = 0.005). At last follow-up, there was no difference in recurrence/progression rates between the two groups. Conclusion There is a continuous evolution in the management of craniopharyngiomas. Gross total resection, higher rates of pituitary stalk and hormonal preservation, and low rates of postoperative CSF leak can be achieved with increased surgical experience.

RESUMO

To understand physical violence in the family, it is important to define the role of the victim. The term "scapegoat" is a universal anthropological concept, often used in sociological theories, where a certain group of people and/or minorities are often victimized or blamed (e.g., social ills). We may note that the phenomenon of scapegoating is most clearly expressed in the Bible. Therefore, we will use relevant biblical texts that refer to parental use of corporal punishment in which a child is scapegoated and/or victimized by parental violence. In this sense, the Bible is the most profound explanation and manifestation of the cultural, social, and especially religious development of humanity. At the same time, the concept of scapegoating is also demonstrated in psychology and therapy, where it also serves as a basis for understanding, for example, physical violence in the family, and where it is also crucial to define the role of the victim. In this article, therefore, we will explain the biblical background of this concept and highlight two basic dynamics of violence against children in the family: when the child is the "scapegoat" for unresolved tensions in the family and when the child becomes the "sacrifice" or victim of the dysregulated emotional response of his or her parents.

RESUMO

This research provides new evidence regarding the different kinds of air quality episodes, and their underlying mechanisms, that frequently impact the urban area of Quintero Bay in Central Chile, which is located along complex coastal terrain and is surrounded by industries. The monitoring campaign was carried out in January 2022 and encompassed two distinctive meteorological regimes. The first part of the month was dominated by a coastal low centered to the south of Quintero, which resulted in prevailing northerly flow (or weak southerlies) and a deep cloud-topped marine boundary layer. After a 2-3-day transition, the latter collapsed, and a clear-sky regime ensued, which was characterized by a shallow boundary layer and strong southerly winds during the daytime that lasted until the end of the campaign. By using proton transfer reaction time of flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) at a high temporal resolution (1 s), we measured high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during air quality episodes in real time. The episodes detected were associated with different prevailing meteorological regimes, suggesting that different point sources were involved. In the first episode, propene/cyclopropane, butenes, benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene/xylenes were associated with north and northwesterly weak winds. Complaints associated with hydrocarbon odor were reported. The pollution originated from industrial and petrochemical units located to the north of Quintero, which transport and store natural gas, liquified petroleum gas and oil. The second episode was linked to an oil refinery located south of our measurement site. In this case, high levels of phenol, furan and cresols occurred under strong southwesterly winds. During this event, headaches and dizziness were reported. By contrast, the levels of other aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene/xylenes) were lower than in the first air pollution episode.
